By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Despite the City of Marseilles canceling the Marseilles Freedom Fest this weekend, the Freedom Run will go on, with some venue changes.

Marseilles Mayor Jim Trager authorized a voluntary evacuation Tuesday when flood waters reached 19 feet. A mandatory evacuation could still take place this week, depending on how quickly the water rises.

Once the water level reaches 22 feet, a mandatory evacuation will be active as part of the city’s flood safety plan of 2013, according to a news release.

“We support the decision made by the Village Board, especially after the flood two years ago,” Tom Yarber, president of the Illinois Motorcycle Freedom Run, said Wednesday. “We had a meeting and it took 20 minutes to come up with alternative plans. Everyone will get to ride and we will still get to have a ceremony.”

Yarber said he understands the need to keep evacuation routes open Saturday in the event a mandatory evacuation occurs, but he couldn’t see canceling the event with so many Gold Star families already en-route to the wall.

He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance bond and ordered to bring documentation to his July 6 court date.

• Daniel B. Riggs, 40, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on June 10 on a charge of criminal damage to property. He was given a July 20 court date.

But the YMCA sports camps aim to fill that gap, he said.

“YMCA programs are really for the kids who might not be playing travel ball or be the greatest athletes,” Iverson said.

“But it might be the only time these kids play sports and actually have the opportunity.”

This week’s sports camp is flag football, with one 90-minute session for kindergartners through third-graders and one for fourth- through sixth-graders.

Rain Wednesday morning forced campers into the Shabbona Middle School gymnasium. Coaches Jeff Edwards and Jake Paulson ran the campers through warm-ups before instructing on proper hand-off techniques and movement drills. Iverson contacted Morris Elementary School District 54 Superintendent Teri Shaw, who opened the gym for the camp.

Flooded fields cause delays for Grundy farmers

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County farmers are keeping their eyes on the fields as water continues to rise and rain continues to fall.

John Dollinger of Channahon has farmland throughout Grundy County. He went around Tuesday afternoon to assess the damage to his crops.

“North of the Illinois River we’ve lost probably 20 to 25 percent of our fields, south of the river something less than 10 percent,” Dollinger said. “It varies from field to field.”

Some fields have natural drainage and others have drainage tiles that allow water to run off the field to protect crops, he said. Others have no drainage and are subject to standing water whenever rain falls as fast and heavy as it has this week.

His cornfield at the corner of Ashley and Bungalow roads has no drainage, he said.

Even if the fields were dry in two weeks, Dollinger said it’s too late to replant corn.

Those portions of the field under water will be lost, cutting the yield significantly.

Morris farmer Terry Seggebruch also is watching the fields. He’s watched some since May, when he should have been planting.

“We have beans that need to be planted yet,” Seggebruch

with no additional rainfall, so the clock is ticking on planting season.

Despite National Weather Service reports of 4.5 inches of rain in Morris on Saturday night, the rain gauge on Seggebruch’s farm on Brisbin Road showed 8 inches. It showed another 3 inches Monday night after rain continued to fall.

One inch of that rain fell in just 30 minutes, according to the NWS. “The thing is, the ground is saturated. The rain isn’t making it any wetter, it’s just making the ponds bigger,” Seggebruch said. “It seems every other year we’re getting a 100-year flood.”

Durkin said sports campers learn skills and teamwork in 90-minute sessions, while summer day campers experience a wider variety of activities, and they have more opportunity to engage with and make friends in the all-day structure that summer day camps provide.

Summer day camps began

June 8 and have a different theme each week until they conclude Aug. 14. The cost is $110 a child a week for full YMCA members and $135 a child a week for program members. There is a one-time registration fee of $30 a child for both memberships.

Child care is offered for an additional charge before and after the camps.

The Morris YMCA also is offering preschool summer camps from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays through Thursdays at a cost of $45 a child a week for full members and $70

a child a week for program members. The theme of the first week was a Super Hero Academy, where the preschool campers met Morris firefighters and helped them wash the fire trucks.

Registration for all camps is open online until midnight the day before a camp begins, Durkin said, but on-site registration is accepted if necessary. People also can register in-person at 320 Wauponsee St. in Morris or by calling 815513-8080.

Community honors Sereno at open house Retired alderman served Morris in his position for 34 years

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Ken Sereno wore a suit and tie Wednesday afternoon as he greeted guests at an open house held for him at the Morris Municipal Services Facility.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick presented Sereno with a gold watch, thanking him for 34 years as alderman. He retired from his Second Ward alderman seat May 4.

More than 30 guests attended in the first 30 minutes of the event, held from 2 to 5 p.m.

They thanked and congratulated Sereno and enjoyed cake and refreshments.

As a break in greeting occurred, the 88-year-old pulled his sleeve back.

“I’ve got a $10 watch here,” he said. “But I think I’ll wear that one.”

Sereno said the open house was a reminder that all the work was worth it. When friends and neighbors first

urged him to run for office, he was apprehensive.

He had heard of under-the-counter deals in politics, but said he never encountered any during his tenure.

“I never knew I’d end up doing it this long,” Sereno said.

“You never know what to expect.”

The 34-year tenure is a record for a Morris alderman.

Sometimes he had competition, sometimes he didn’t.

It was difficult to always keep the best interest of Morris in mind over so many years, Sereno said.

He lost customers at his Ace Hardware over the way he’s voted, had someone put their fists up to fight at a meeting and received an angry letter, but he never wavered.

Kopczick said he could never have a bad word to say about Sereno, whom he called a dear friend, despite party affiliation. Sereno is a Republican and Kopczick a Democrat. Kopczick said he cut his

presentation short because he didn’t want to tear up.

“We would disagree on things, but whatever decision he rendered, it was always with the best interest of Morris in mind,” Kopczick said as he presented the watch to Sereno.

Everyone who showed up to the open house brought back memories, Sereno said.

Pat Feeney and Josetta Nelson said they’ve known Sereno and his wife, Joan, since they were teenagers in the youth center started by the Serenos.

“They are both dedicated, good people,” Feeney said.

Teenagers didn’t have much to do back then, Nelson said. The Serenos made sure young people were active and social.

“Kids always loved them,” Feeney said.

Though Sereno said it doesn’t take much to keep him busy at his age, and he can’t walk the town like he used to, he will continue to be as active as possible.

After the open house, he had a 6 p.m. meeting at the Grundy County Historical Society.

Board approves $10,000 for work on new dugouts at baseball field

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The creation of both minds and structures is in top gear for the summer at Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C. The school board met Monday and discussed a new accelerated math program and the building of new dugouts for the school’s baseball facilities.

Principal Joe Zweeres presented the adopted accelerated math program, beginning with third-grade students, who have already started work this summer.

In the past, the school had a “high” math class for students who needed more challenge.

This new program will have selected students working at a math level one grade higher than their current enrollment.

“I’ve personally spoken to the parents of the children who qualified for this accelerated program, and handed them packets of third-grade level work for the student to do over the summer,” Zweeres said. “Then, at the beginning of the school year, we will test them to see where they are, cover any confusing material, and move on to the fourth-

grade curriculum.”

Board member Ginger Jones raised concerns that third grade may be too early to begin the accelerated program, but Zweeres said these students were chosen scientifically.

“We used Mathematics Concepts and Applications and cognitive testing. We evaluated the end of the year tests, and spoke to teachers before and after the testing results for recommendations,” he said.

The district’s hope is that students within this program will be prepared for algebra in eighth grade, keeping them competitive and prepared for high school.

Zweeres said with the “high” student program, the junior high students would go from seventh-grade math right to algebra, making a large jump in curriculum.

At this point, students will be one year ahead, taking eighth-grade math in seventh grade and then moving seamlessly into algebra.

“This group of students is not set in stone. If a child falls behind, they can go back to the normal grade level math, or if we see a student blossom, they have the capability to be reassessed throughout and at the end of the year,” Zweeres said.

Jones pointed out they need to allocate money for academics as well as athletics. “We are getting angry teachers when we keep doing projects for athletics and not academics,”

Jones said.

Superintendent Kathy Perry said in the past, to save money, demolition and other projects have been done with volunteers.

Darlington suggested asking the two travel baseball teams who use the field in the summer to provide some money, and Jones suggested going to the athletic boosters for revenue.

Mental Health Court gets funds for next year

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Three months after Grundy County Mental Health Court started in Morris, program officials have received word they will receive funding for fiscal 2016, beginning July 1 and running through June 30, 2016.

Mental Health Court is designed to divert nonviolent, mentally ill offenders away from prisons and into rehabilitation programs.

“The program and the application process for funding is always a team effort and we were very pleased to learn that we will receive funding for the upcoming year,” Judge Lance Peterson said in a news release. “This is a significant benefit to the community.”

Peterson said Wednesday there are four people participating in the program, and by next year the state expects the county to have nine more participants.

“Each person presents a unique challenge,” he said.

“They are all progressing.”

The Mental Health Court program is made up of a court team that includes members from the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s office, the public defender’s office, the Grundy County Health Department, the probation department and program administrator Susie Galloway.

The group originally applied for a grant last year and

was scheduled to start last fall when it was informed it didn’t receive the grant. The group resubmitted the application and received word in December it was approved for $51,380.

In January, weeks before the first court date, the program discovered funding was halted because of an executive order by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

By February, the group learned the grant was released and it could begin right away.

The program is funded by Adult Redeploy Illinois, and getting the funding for the next year was a relief to the group.

The grant is for $87,300, which Peterson said covers most program expenses.

“There have been some costs that have come up, including temporary housing, medical needs and transportation costs that aren’t covered by the grant,” he said. “The team is doing local fundraising to cover the additional costs.”

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said previously Mental Health Court is available to some defendants who fit given criteria, including having committed a felony and having an axis 1 disorder, such as a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder or anxiety disorder.

Helland did not immediately return calls for comment Wednesday.

I think the most important take-home from this study is that wearing contact lenses is safe but you should remove your contact lenses at the end of the day; I suggest for at least two hours before bedtime, and wear your glasses one or two days a week, and never wear your contact lenses if your eyes are red or irritated. If you don’t follow a proper wearing schedule, your eyes may become more “droopy” after years of wear.

MAZON – The village of Mazon is going to place surveillance cameras in its local parks thanks to a partnership with the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland agreed to pay $11,500 for the initial cost of the purchase and installation of cameras in the parks, according to a news release from his office.

“My office has previously purchased cameras for parks in Coal City and the program has worked well in assisting law enforcement to prevent crimes and reduce vandalism,” Helland said in the release.

The cameras will enable the village of Mazon to monitor the parks 24/7.

“This purchase is a great

backup tool for law enforcement,” Helland said.

The state’s attorney’s office drug asset forfeiture account paid for the purchase.

During fiscal 2013, the office forfeited more than $100,000 in assets seized and was third out of 102 counties in Illinois in drug asset forfeiture, behind only Cook and Will counties.

The state’s attorney’s office receives 12.5 percent of all property forfeited for use in the enforcement of drug laws, according to the release.

With this money, Helland has bought thermal imaging equipment for law enforcement, crime prevention billboards, three K-9 dogs, and has brought the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists to local schools to warn students of the dangers of destructive decision-making.

By SUZAN FRASER The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey – Suleyman Demirel was a master pragmatist whose remarkable talent for staying on top of Turkish politics saw him survive two coups, serve seven terms as Turkey’s prime minister and cap his career with the presidency.

Unusually in Turkey’s polarized political space, Demirel – who died early Wednesday at the age of 90 – sought the common ground, easily abandoned grudges and occasionally stepped aside when under pressure.

“He was very pragmatic, particularly in a society where people often engage in politics through their ideologies,” said Ilter Turan, an emeritus professor of political science at Istanbul Bilgi University. He described Demirel as a consensus-builder who eschewed revenge.

Demirel died at 2:05 a.m. at Ankara’s Guven Hospital of heart failure and a respiratory tract infection, doctors said in

an announcement broadcast on Turkish television.

He served as head of state from 1993 to 2000, the culmination of a four-decade career that repeatedly took him in

and out of high office – with two stints as prime minister cut short by military intervention.

Born to a peasant family in a village in southwestern Turkey, he moved from the civil service to the private sector and then into politics, where he distinguished himself by his hard work and an open embrace of political realism.

Demirel was hardly alone in tailoring his politics to suit the circumstances of the day, but his unabashed acknowledgement of policy reversals was unusual.

Former Australian Olympic runner Ron Clarke dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS GOLD COAST, Australia – Ron Clarke, one of Australia’s greatest distance runners and the man who lit the cauldron at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, died Wednesday at the age of 78.

Gold Coast City Council, where Clarke was a former mayor, confirmed Clarke’s death from kidney failure after previously battling heart disease.

Clarke set 17 world records, including 12 during a 44-day tour of Europe in 1965, nine years after he had been invited as a 19-year-old to light the Olympic flame at the Melbourne Games.

“I reveled in the feeling that running gave me,” Clarke said after he retired. “It was a fantastic feeling, an alive feeling.”

He competed at the 1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico City Olympics, but his only medal was a bronze in the 10,000 meters in 1964.

At Mexico City, Clarke collapsed at the finish line and came close to dying from altitude sickness during the 10,000

meters. He finished in sixth place, but later said he could not recall anything about the final stretches of the race. He later competed in the 5,000 at the same games.

Clarke’s world records came over a variety of distances, including the 5,000 four times and the 10,000 twice. But he also set world marks twice in the 2 mile, four times in the 3 mile, twice over 6 miles, once each over 10 miles and 20 kilometers and once in a 1-hour race in 1965, where he completed 20.232 kilometers (12.5 miles).

Clarke was mayor of the Gold Coast from 2004 to 2012, where one of his last official duties was to help secure the 2018 Commonwealth Games for the beachside city. He was honored with the Order of Australia and as a Member of the British Empire.

John Landy, a former governor of Victoria state, said Clarke set a standard for athletes around the world.

“He helped a lot of other athletes and he was an outstanding athlete, not only in the sense of breaking major records, but he really did show to the world what was possible in terms of endurance run-

ning,” Landy said. “He was a wonderful athlete and a wonderful person.”

Landy and Clarke were well-known for the sportsmanship shown at the 1956 Australian national championships when Landy helped Clarke up after the two collided during the race.

“Ron Clarke fell over – I didn’t trip him, but in trying to get over him I spiked his shoulder and arm, and I stopped to see how he was and I put my foot over the line ... and he got up and said ‘keep going,’ which I did, and I won the race,” Landy said.

“It was one of those bizarre instances probably best forgotten, but it created a lot of publicity at the time.”

Despite maintaining a strong fitness regimen throughout his life, Clarke was not as mobile after an accident sustained since his retirement from public life in 2012. He was injured during his regular walk about a year ago.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, two sons and grandchildren. His daughter, Monique, died in 2009.

Sculptor Jesus Moroles dies in Texas traffic accident The ASSOCIATED PRESS JARRELL, Texas – Texas sculptor and National Medal of Arts recipient Jesus Moroles has died in a traffic accident.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Moroles was killed Monday night in a wreck in Jarrell, 30 miles north of Austin.

The agency said Wednesday that Moroles was on Interstate 35 when the van he was driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer rig.

Moroles died at the scene. The trucker wasn’t hurt.

Moroles lived and worked in Rockport. He specialized in granite.

President George W. Bush awarded Moroles the National Medal of Arts in 2008.

His 1987 sculpture Lapstrake is in New York City near the Museum of Modern Art.

BRIEF State Sen. Rezin speaks about local flood alliance

SPRINGFIELD – Speaking at the Association of State Flood Plain Managers’ annual national conference June 4 in Atlanta, State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, presented to local, state and federal flood plain managers how the Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance can be used as a model for any region with flooding.

“The Illinois Valley Flood Resiliency Alliance is something we established in 2014 after our region suffered major flood losses in 2013,” Rezin said in a news release. “The IVFRA brings communities, local governments and emergency personnel together so everyone is on the same page and ready to go, in the inevitable event our rivers rise again. We are now better

prepared for a flood event in our region because of it. An alliance like the IVFRA can work as a model for other regions in the country so they too can better prevent flood losses.”

In 2014, Rezin hosted a “Flood Fighting School” in Ottawa. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, LaSalle County Emergency Management, the city of Ottawa and dozens of other community leaders learned about proper sandbag preparation, how to build earth levees, common failure modes and what new materials and technology are available ro fight floods with less manpower. The IVFRA originally included LaSalle, Grundy, Bureau and Putnam counties. It has since added several more.

Downtown Morris gets refreshed MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Downtown Morris is getting some fresh flowers and plants this spring, thanks to a donation to the Morris Downtown Development Partnership from Home for the Holidays.

The MDDP replaced a few anchor plants from downtown planters and added new annuals, according to a news release from the organization. MDDP board members were joined by a few members of the Morris Area Garden Club to install the plants.

“In addition to these volunteers, we would like to thank Morris Public Works and the downtown businesses that have offered to water and maintain the plants in between the city’s regular watering,” she said in the release.

OPINION Nurses are crucial balm in hospitals “When you enter the hospital, you place your modesty in a little bag and leave it by the door. Then you pick it up when you go home.”

Fr. Robert Barron quoted his mother during a recent reflection on his own unexpected stay in “hospitalland,” as he calls it in an article on the wordonfire.org website.

Perhaps you’ve been too? Or had to leave a loved one at a place where, as he wrote, “You are only vaguely aware of the movement of the sun across the sky, and people come barging into your room as regularly at two in the morning as two in the afternoon.”

The nurses can make all the difference. Nurses frequently have to work in the most demanding of circumstances.

They tend to have at least one more patient than they should, and their hours can be long and grueling. But they’ll do the best they can, and they’ll focus, and their presence can mean so much in the long, mostly solitary abyss of time spent in a hospital bed.

Nurses restore a sense of human dignity; they celebrate a patient’s small milestones and can remind a patient that he or she is someone who is loved – even when no one comes to visit. Even when the patient feels the world has left them behind. Even when they have gotten to the point where they want it all to end.

Spending the last week in “hospitalland” as an observer, I started asking around, just to encourage a quick word of thanks to the people who can make the unbearable bearable, and even bring on a smile or a laugh when there really seems to be nothing to laugh or smile about.

Though I was supposed to wait until 7 p.m. (a full 12 hours post-delivery), she took me down at 5 so that I wouldn’t get caught in the shuffle of shift changes, etc.

She was an angel.”

How many die in police custody?

With every video that surfaces of questionable or shocking police conduct, at least two questions arise.

The first is how exactly each incident happened. The second is how common such incidents are.

The first question can be addressed through investigation, which can surprise both police and their critics, and eventually through better training. The second question is more straightforward – and the lack of an answer is unacceptable.

The U.S. Department of Justice actually has two separate counts of deaths in police custody – one by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and one by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Each count misses half of all deaths; the department hoped that by combining them, it would get a reasonably accurate number.

Its hope was misplaced.

The department pretty much acknowledges that its

number – arrived at through complex algorithms – is unreliable. The Bureau of Justice Statistics suspended its data collection more than a year ago and has since been examining ways to improve the accuracy of its count.

How hard can this be?

Attorney General Loretta Lynch needs to make better reporting of deaths by states a top priority in a way that her predecessor never did, even in the wake of last summer’s controversial killings.

A law passed last December with strong bipartisan support allows the attorney general to withhold up to 10 percent of some federal grants to states if they fail to comply with reporting requirements.

The law gives states 120 days to begin reporting deaths on a quarterly basis, but the department will not set any requirements for reporting until it completes an internal review of its own data collection.

The federal government needs to move faster, and Lynch needs to use her bully pulpit to push states to make accurate reporting a higher priority. States that do a poor job reporting data should face not only a loss of funds but also a public shaming by the nation’s top law-enforcement official.

Through her years as a prosecutor, Lynch has earned credibility with both critics and defenders of the police. She can do both sides a service by presenting the public an accurate picture of deaths in police custody.

Better numbers won’t solve the problem.

But they can be a useful gauge through which to measure and focus any proposed solution.

Besides, the public deserves to know whenever anyone dies in the custody of the men and women given the duty and honor to protect and serve it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Morris girls team up for show of toughness

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Parents of the players on the girls basketball team shouldn’t be surprised if their daughters want to sleep all day Thursday.

That’s because they worked a double shift during the Morris Ladies Shootout, and that’s just on the court. Besides their normal duties of working at scorers’ tables, concession stands or any other general work that needed done, the Redskins had to play two teams’ games over the course of both days after Deerfield dropped out and left a gap in the schedule.

On Tuesday, Morris used its whole team and played both its own and Deerfield’s scheduled games in pool play. They went 2-1 in each pool, and with the way the brackets were drawn up, ended up pitted against itself in the first round of the Gold bracket.

At that point, coach Kate Carey split the team in half and sent one team into the winner’s side of the Gold bracket and one team into the loser’s side for second- and third-round games.

The Morris I team ended up playing Antioch in the winners side and lost, before taking on Minooka in the Gold bracket third-place game and coming away with a 34-32 win.

Morris II played Oswego on the losers side and lost before falling to Plainfield North later.

Morris I consisted of Mya Shannon, Meghan Smith, Destiny Cano, Jess Jurak, Alissa Bojovic and Sage Reische, while Morris II was made up of Devin Pacheco, Madi Mayberry, Rylie Harr, Megan Jurak and Camryn Lewis.

“Everyone got to play a lot in the shootout,” Carey said.

“That was a good thing. We didn’t split the team Tuesday, but we had to today after we were in the same bracket. Both teams did a good job. As this summer keeps going, it makes me optimistic for November.

“The girls are excited. They are pretty raw, and there is a lot of refining to do, but the talent is there. I learned a lot

about the girls. They have a great attitude and they just enjoy playing together. I am looking forward to a fun season.”

Against Minooka, the Redskins fell behind 10-3 early before chipping away at the Indians’ lead. A free throw by Bojovic made it 18-14 late in

21-19 lead. Shannon scored on a putback, then scored again on a drive down the lane to give Morris a 23-21 lead.

Minooka went ahead 2824 on a 3-pointer by Hannah Goodwell. Jess Jurak then scored to pull Morris to within 28-26 and followed with a 3-pointer to put the Redskins ahead 29-28 with 4:50 to play.

Cano then scored on a putback to put Morris ahead 31-28.

We want them to be free to try new things and see what works. There were many times when I didn’t feel like I was coaching. They were just out there playing.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After going 2-1 in their pool on Tuesday, the Minooka girls basketball team tipped off Wednesday morning in the Gold Bracket. Their opponent was a familiar one, Southwest Prairie Conference rival Romeoville.

The Indians rode a strong defense to victory against the Spartans, allowing only seven points in the second half of a 32-25 win. They then lost to Sycamore in the semifinals and dropped a tight 34-32 decision to one of the two Morris teams in the third-place game to finish fourth in the Gold bracket and come away from the tourney with a 3-3 record.

“Missing a few of our starters didn’t help us,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said.

“Overall, we saw some really good things, and there were also some frustrating things.

Romeoville is a good team, one of the better teams in our conference, and we looked real good against them. Now, we need those flashes to become more consistent, and that’s what we’ll try to do this summer.”

Coal City shows improvement on second day

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A day made a world of difference for the Coal City girls basketball team at the Morris Ladies Shootout on Wednesday.

The day before, the Coalers were playing without a few players because of a previous volleyball engagement at Navy Pier. That, coupled with a pool that consisted of Lincoln-Way West, Sycamore and West Aurora saw Coal City finish with an 0-3 record on the tournament’s first day and a berth in the Maroon bracket.

When Wednesday rolled around, things were different for the Coalers. The girls from the volleyball team were back,

and they were in a bracket filled with the other teams in the tournament that went 0-3 the day before. Coal City defeated Willowbrook in their first game Wednesday, then downed Serena in the Maroon bracket semifinals, earning a bracket title berth against Erie, a game which not over by the Morris Herald-News deadline.

Even after two games Wednesday, Coal City coach Brad Schmitt noted a marked change.

“We were missing a few due to volleyball yesterday, but that’s what you contend with in the summer,” he said. “We knew what they were capable of, so we just wanted to make sure the younger players knew

what we wanted them to do.

“The younger players seem to have learned a lot from yesterday and looked a lot better today.”

Against Serena, Coal City trailed 4-2 early, but went ahead for good on a 3-pointer by Makenna Emerson that made the score 5-4. Taylor Meents then made a free throw before a basket each by Makenzie Bugg and Madison Halliday put Coal City ahead 10-4. Meents had a 3-pointer, a basket and a free throw before halftime to give the Coalers a 16-10 lead at the break.

“Makenna Emerson has been up on the varsity for four years, so she knows what to do,” Schmitt said. “We need her to take a leadership role, and she was doing that during this tournament. Taylor Meents came off the bench for us last year, but she will give us some offensive spark this year.

Coach John Fox talks defense at minicamp

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – One of the players who caught the eyes of observers during Tuesday’s Bears minicamp was David Bass, who has moved to outside linebacker in the 3-4. Bass made plays when given opportunities in his first two seasons with the Bears, and John Fox was asked about the third-year player after Wednesday’s practice.

“I think he’s worked very hard,” Fox said. “Clint Hurtt and Vic [Fangio] have done a good job working with those guys and teaching them. I think sometimes new is better, and he’s taken to it pretty well.”

Fox also praised inside linebacker Shea McClellin, who in addition to playing his third position in four NFL seasons is making the calls for the defense.

“I think he’s a smart, young player,” Fox said. “I think he’s been moved around. I think he’s been in some different systems. I think he’s adapted pretty well. We’ll get to see where that goes when we get to training camp and when we conclude this camp.”

Blind-side Long: On Wednesday, Kyle Long shifted to left tackle with the first-team offensive line, as Jermon Bushrod and Jordan Mills remained out of the lineup. Charles Leno Jr. played right tackle. Fox emphasized the importance of getting reps at both spots.

“I think it’s an injustice to just throw a guy, even as simple as it sounds, left to right, whether you’re doing it with a corner or a outside backer or a guard or tackle. They need to practice it,” he said. “This is a good time of year to kind of get the technique, the sets and all of the different communication that has to happen with the O-line. You know, getting that valuable reps and experience.”

Willie Tyler, a ventriloquist, comedian and thespian, said, “The reason lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place is that the same place isn’t there the second time.”

That sounds logical, although an overbid on the power of lightning. The key word for today’s deal, though, is “second.”

A defender’s opening lead imparts information about his holding in that suit, but sometimes it takes his second lead to tell partner exactly how to defend.

How does that apply in this deal?

South is in three no-trump, and West leads the heart three.

South takes East’s queen with his king, crosses to dummy with a spade, and runs the club queen. What should happen after that?

The auction was simple and straightforward. North, with a balanced hand and no thought of a slam, correctly did not mention his minor suit.

West knows that South holds the heart jack, because if East had had that card, he would have played the jack, not the queen, at trick one. When playing third hand high, one tables the bottom of touching cards. So, unless South started with an unlikely king-jack-doubleton, West must try to get East on lead for a heart return through declarer’s jack. How? Clearly, the answer is in diamonds.

But which diamond should West lead?

As he wants East to return a heart, West should lead his nine, the high card denying interest in that suit. Then, East should win with his ace and return the heart nine, resulting in down two.
