newspapers in Kendall County SHAW MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media, owner of the Morris Herald-News, announced today that it is purchasing Record Newspapers Inc. from Jeff and Kathy Farren.

Based in Yorkville, The Record Newspapers include the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, the Ledger-Sentinel in Oswego, the Plano Record and the Sandwich Record, as well as affiliated websites.

“We are proud to welcome The Record Newspapers to our growing portfolio of family-owned, community-focused media operations,” Shaw Media President John Rung said.

“We look forward to continuing the Farrens’ tradition of quality local journalism,

while expanding the Ledger-Sentinel’s and Record’s presence through digital formats.”

The transaction is expected to close June 26.

“We have always worked hard to provide extensive local news coverage of our communities. So we are pleased with Shaw Media’s commitment to continue that level of coverage for our readers,” Kathy Farren, Record editor, said.

Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973.

The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and

called the Ledger-Sentinel.

The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985.

“The decision to sell was a difficult one,” publisher Jeff Farren said, but he added, “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future.”

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Friday on a charge of driving under the influence. He also was cited for improper turning.

• Tiffani M. Engelhardt, 63, of Gardner, was arrested

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of possession of cannabis. She was given a June 29 court date.

• Christopher M. Lee Jr. of Mazon was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a charge of driving under the influence. He also was cited for illegal consumption by a minor, improper parking on a roadway and improper lane usage. He was given a July 13 court date.

• Robert K. Sanchez, 26, of Coal City, was arrested

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a Will County warrant charge of theft. He was given a July 14 court date.

Break in weather allows for annual firefighters carnival to run smoothly

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The break in rainy days Tuesday brought adventure-seekers of all ages to the Morris Community High School parking lot for the Morris Firefighters Association Annual Carnival.

Shelley Corum of Morris said her 9-year-old son, Xavier, has been attending the event since he was a toddler.

She’s developed a strategy of starting her son off slowly after dinner, first taking him to the merry-go-round in hopes of not upsetting his stomach.

When Xavier was done, he chose to hit the “Jungle Twist” ride, giving a thumbs-up on departure.

Xavier enjoyed the ride.

“It was amazing,” he said.

Corum and her husband, Kevin, said they love the chance to support Morris firefighters, and they always buy tickets in advance when they’re sold door-to-door.

“Xavier looks forward to it every year,” Corum said.

Jim and Michelle Henke of Morris said they’ve taken their 7-year-old daughter, Jessie, to the carnival since she was 2.

“I like all of it,” Jessie said.

The Henke family lives near Morris High School and appreciates that they can walk to the carnival every year and see people they know.

The Morris firefighters are a particularly good group of people, he said, who bring the event back each year to Morris and put the proceeds to good use.

“It’s a nice community here. We truly do enjoy coming to Morris,” Schoendienst said. “We like to bring in local purveyors too, such as Cal’s Printing.”

When the volunteer department became the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District years ago and transitioned from being a completely volunteer department, it also became a taxing body, but funds still are needed to support it.

In the past, proceeds have been used on uniforms, equipment, pickups and brush trucks for the department, as well as local organizations such as We Care of Grundy County and Operation St. Nick.

A majority of the funds raised come from the pre-ticket sales done by Morris firefighters.

At the carnival, which runs through Saturday, weather permitting, people can buy a ride ticket for $1.25 a piece, or 44 tickets for $50 or 22 for $25.

Each ride requires two or three tickets for admission; but on Saturday, all rides require just one ticket.

District 54 board discusses questioned expenses

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – New policies and procedures are in the works at Morris Elementary School District 54 after questions arose on invoices and bills approved and paid from 2012 through 2014.

Board member Bonnie Cap requested the documents before the May board meeting, and when asked what documents she requested or what she was questioning, she had no comment. Cap has been a board member since 2013.

Through the Freedom of Information Act, the Morris Herald-News received a copy of the emailed requests and copies of the documents discussed in an email between Cap and Superintendent Teri Shaw.

The bills were reportedly discussed at the Committee of the Whole Meeting in

One of the bills questioned

was $321.68 for a Batman costume for Principal Chris Meier, purchased in October 2014.

Shaw said Meier used the costume for the school’s Halloween parade and the costume remains district property and would be used again in the future.

Other bills questioned were red light camera tickets issued by the Aurora Police Department for a district-owned vehicle. Tickets were issued on two separate occasions for two different drivers.

There also were bills for items such as Lego kits that were billed to the special education department for student incentive charts in 2014.

Also included in the bills was a March 2014 Apple purchase of $1,151.75, which included more than $800 for an iPhone for Shaw’s use.

Shaw’s contract includes a cellphone and she said she has

not used that portion of her contract since she was originally hired as superintendent.

The most recent contract available online was voted on and approved by the board in January of this year, which states, “The board shall provide Dr. Shaw with a smartphone to improve accessibility and communication. The smartphone may be used for reasonable personal use.”

Policy specifics regarding such purchases as the costume or cellphone were not yet detailed by the board.

Some other items called into question by board members included cancellation fees for workshops board members

did not attend, Shaw said.

Stevens said that is one of the policies and procedures the district will work on, including a form that board members will fill out to show they will attend.

Sometimes cancellations happen due to illness or family emergencies that occur beyond the date the district can get a refund for cancellation, causing the district to incur fees in the past, Shaw said.

Cap said she still was not happy with some of the responses, but believes they will be addressed with new policies and in the budget to prevent further spending without documentation.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Marseilles has issued a voluntary evacuation to residents because of flood levels along the Illinois River reaching 19 feet, with levels expected to rise to 21 feet by Wednesday.

Mayor Jim Trager said Tuesday afternoon alarms sounded when the Illinois River in Morris reached 19 feet, the level that triggers a voluntary evacuation for Marseilles.

“If it reaches the next level, I will sign another proclamation issuing a mandatory evacuation,” he said.

A mandatory evacuation will be issued if the river reaches 22 feet.

Trager said residents should be aware of their evacuation routes and make their way out of the area safely if a mandatory evacuation takes place.

The voluntary evacuation is for anyone that was affected by flooding in 2013.

People in those areas are located in the most vulnerable parts of the city.

He said there are no plans for a place for residents to evacuate to, so they will

“And the water that is falling up north and in Indiana has to pass by Morris in the Illinois River.”

On Tuesday, a spokesman

for the National Weather Service in Romeoville said there was a chance of rain over the next 48 hours, with Friday expected to have no rain before possible thunderstorms arrive again Saturday.

Kulasik said if the rain in the forecast falls, Grundy County can expect more flooding.

At about noon Tuesday, the EMA set up a self-serve sandbag station at the Grundy County Administration building, 1320 Union St. in Morris.

By 4 p.m. the EMA had already handed out 45 bags of sand.

City votes not to cover resident’s plumbing bill

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris elected Monday not to cover $1,400 worth of plumbing work done at Scott Kerr’s Chapin Street residence.

Kerr asked the City Council to pay the bill because he believed a flood of sewer water in his basement was caused by the city’s sewer main. He said he suffered a great loss as a result.

Aldermen Randy Larson, Doug Hayse and Don Matteson voted in favor of covering the bill, while Aldermen Duane Wolfe, Jeff Wachowski and Don Hansen voted against it.

Because of the vacant Second Ward aldermanic seat and the absence of Alderman Bill Martin because of work, the 3-3 vote needed a tie-breaker. Mayor Richard Kopczick voted “No” to break the tie.

Kerr said that on a Sunday in February, he woke up to an extreme stench and had sewer water in his basement. He and his wife vacuumed the water out and tested the sewer system again, only to see more water come out.

He called the city, and Morris Public Works came to check the lines that Mon-

day, as well as the following two days, Kopczick said. A plumbing company worked on Kerr’s sewer line during the course of that time.

Kerr believes the backup was caused by the city’s sewer main, and that since he called the city, it had prior knowledge.

Kopczick told Kerr at the meeting that the term “prior knowledge” means the city knew the line was clogged and did nothing. But the city didn’t know prior to Kerr calling.

“There isn’t anything presented here to confirm there was a defect in the city line or that the city had prior or constructive knowledge,” Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said.

Kopczick said Tuesday Morris Public Works checked all sewer mains in the area during those three February days and jetted the line to clear it.

The machine used pumps 85 gallons of water a minute, with 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch, Public Works Director Jim Gretencord said – strong enough to take water out of toilets in homes.

The machine created a vacuum that pulled the blockage out into the city’s line, indicating it came from the

residence’s line, Gretencord said.

He added that if it affects two homes, it’s probably the city’s line – which wasn’t the case in this instance.

He said another indicator the clog was a city problem would have been if there was a big rush of water. Before and after jetting the line, there was two inches of water flow in the city’s 8-inch main, which is normal flow, Gretencord said. There was no rush of water.

Hansen asked Gretencord if he believed the blockage was caused by roots. Gretencord said he thinks there are roots or some sort of blockage in the personal line, because there’s no blockage in the city’s line.

It’s important for a property owner to remember they are responsible for their sewer lines up to the point they tap onto the city’s sewer line, Kopczick said, even if it’s on the other side of the street, or if a garage or trees are added on top of the land that covers the line.

“Mr. Kerr has a very long service line,” Kopczick said.

“The home was built in the early 1900s, when they were just digging by hand, trying to get the line to where it needed to go.”

Also Monday, village trustees approved extending Police Chief Jeff Wold’s contract to match the four years of Schumacher’s term.

Village Administrator Tom Durkin said Wold’s salary was unchanged, remaining at an estimated $115,500 annually. It could increase if the board approves raises for department heads this summer.

The board also recognized the Channahon Police Cadets for the work they have done in the community the past few years. Most recently, accord-

ing to Wold, they recognized a dangerous patch of Hansel Road where gravel accumulates and has caused a few motorcycle accidents.

The cadets identified the problem, proposed loose gravel signs be erected and raised money for the sign purchases.

The signs were installed by the village’s Public Works Department.

The cadets also provide crowd and traffic control at some of Channahon’s larger events, such as Three Rivers Fest, the tree-lighting ceremony, St. Baldrick’s and July 4.

“The cadets provide added manpower at large gatherings,” Wold said, “and they keep their eyes and ears open and tell police officers if they observe any criminal activity.”

Wold said the cadets may serve from ages 16 to 21 or until graduation from college with a criminal justice major.

Crime Stoppers seeks info on Gardner burglary

GARDNER – Crime Stoppers of Grundy County is seeking information about a burglary that occurred sometime between May 28 and 29 in the area of Jugtown and Grinter roads, north of Gardner.

The offender(s) entered a barn and removed two Polaris ATV Sportsman 4-wheelers. Offender(s) also took a brown, 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck and utility type two wheel trailer from the

property that was believed used to haul the ATVs from the scene, according to a news release.

The truck was later recovered in Cook County. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Crime Stoppers line at 815-942-9667. Callers may remain anonymous, and rewards of up to $5,000 are offered for information that leads to the arrest of the offenders of this or any other criminal offense in Grundy County.

CHANNAHON – The village of Channahon had 21 hail damage repair solicitors apply to be registered in town in just one day, according to Village President Missey Schumacher.

“We are looking at the applications as quickly as we can,” she said during Monday’s Village Board meeting.

On June 10, a hail storm that Schumacher said was particularly long-lasting battered homes and cars. The next morning, solicitors were knocking on doors.

Anyone soliciting at homes or selling door-to-door in Channahon must be given a permit through the police department.

An advisory released by the police department last week and on the village’s website stated, “Hail damage solicitors need to have a permit from the village. Ensure anyone at your door is permitted, licensed and bonded ... All solicitors in Channahon need to first be permitted ... and display their permit(s) when soliciting doorto-door. With any work done to your home, please ensure any contractor is licensed, insured and bonded.”

The 21 firms registered with the village on Monday, officials said.

Applications are available at village hall, 24555 S Navajo Drive, or online. The fee is $100, and the permit is valid for 15 days per calendar year.

Schumacher said after the meeting that she and the police department are keeping an eye on creek, river and canal levels. The community has received several inches of rain over the past two days. Water levels are high, but are not at flood stage.

On Tuesday morning, the village put up a photo on its Facebook page warning of standing water on Route 6 at Navajo Drive, which had reduced traffic to one lane in each direction. The Illinois

Department of Transportation estimated the water would remain for a day or two, according to the village.

“The areas that typically flood have not flooded yet,” Schumacher said, “but the ground is so saturated ... I am concerned, and I’m keeping an eye on it.”

By SALLY HO and STEVE ROTHWELL The Associated Press LAS VEGAS – Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, an eighthgrade dropout who built Las Vegas’ biggest hotels, tried to take over Chrysler and bought and sold MGM at a profit three times, has died. He was 98.

He died Monday night in Beverly Hills.

The reserved, unpretentious Kerkorian spent much of his life trying to stay out of the spotlight and rarely gave interviews. He called himself a “small-town boy who got lucky.”

He shunned glitzy Hollywood parties and movie premieres in favor of making deals. Rather than arrive at an event by limousine, he often drove himself in a Mercury station wagon.

“He was a very private guy who shunned the limelight, both in a business way and from a charitable standpoint,” said Patty Glaser, his attorney of four decades.

After making his first fortune ferrying gamblers to Las Vegas with Trans International Airlines, he built the 30-story 1,568-room International Hotel, the world’s largest hotel when it opened in the late 1960s. He brought Elvis Presley to perform there in 1969 as

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Blaze Starr, a “knockout” burlesque icon and stripper who drew tourists to postWorld War II Baltimore, lent glamour to New Orleans and became known far and Blaze Starr wide for her affair with a colorful mid-century Louisiana governor, died Monday. She was 83.

She died at her Wilsondale, West Virginia, home after experiencing heart issues during the past few years, said her nephew Earsten Spaulding.

Born Fannie Belle Fleming in Wayne County, West Virginia, Starr long performed at the Two O’Clock Club in Baltimore, earning her the nickname, “The Hottest Blaze in Burlesque.”

She’s better known for what happened when she landed at the Sho-Bar club in New Orleans. That’s where Starr famously had an affair with Louisiana Gov. Earl K. Long, who served in the 1940s

and 1950s.

Gus Weill, one of Louisiana’s first political consultants who got his start in politics in the 1960s, said Starr was a “knockout” beauty who gave New Orleans glamor. He did not know her personally.

“They had the romance and history, and she added a good dollop of glamour,” Weill said about her contribution to New Orleans. “She was a wonderful dancer and much loved.”

Ted Jones, an 81-year-old former aide to Long, said Long’s affair was the reflection of “a 60-year-old man trying to reinvent his life.”

Jones said the open affair lasted between 1959 and Long’s death in September 1960, but didn’t mar Long’s legacy – although it gave his political opponents something with which to “jump on him.”

“Of course, Ms. Blanche [Long’s wife] didn’t like her, but that was beside the point,” Jones said. “It didn’t mar his legacy; it demonstrated that old men have a flair for nice women.”

Starr later migrated more toward comedy acts when she bought the Two O’Clock Club.

Marseilles has worked with local, county and state emergency services as well as the Army Corps of Engineers on river conditions and reviewing flood safety procedures, according to a code red alert posted on the city website.

The mayor said if residents decide to evacuate, they should call and leave a message with their name and address so emergency responders will know which homes are empty, in case of an emergency.

The alert said Marseilles will continue to monitor river conditions, weather forecasts and update all residents on a regular basis by code red alerts, social media, radio and in local newspapers.

Don’t prolong NASA’s dependence on Russia At the Group of Seven meeting in Germany last week, President Barack Obama was talking tough on Russia. He urged his fellow leaders to stand together against “Russian aggression” in Ukraine by maintaining economic sanctions against Moscow.

Meanwhile, a U.S. Senate committee was advancing legislation that would add two more years to America’s extortionate payments to Russia for transporting U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station.

NASA has been stuck relying on Russia’s space agency to ferry U.S. astronauts into low-Earth orbit since the end of the space shuttle program in mid-2011.

The cost isn’t the only objectionable part of this arrangement. It cedes significant control over the U.S. space program and its access to the station, a $100 billion investment, to Russia and its rogue

president, Vladimir Putin. And Russian spacecraft have experienced a series of malfunctions in recent months.

The latest Senate spending bill that includes funding for NASA calls for just $900 million, which agency leaders said would push the commercial launch date for manned flights back to 2019. And for what? U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, said any savings from the lower funding level in the bill would be wiped out by two more years of payments to the Russians. NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden put it starkly: “By gutting this program and turning our backs on U.S. industry,” said Bolden, a former astronaut himself, “NASA will be forced to continue to rely on Russia to get its astronauts to space – and continue to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the Russian economy rather than our own.”

Denny Hastert and the statue of limitations SPRINGFIELD – Know any living Illinois politicians who deserve a $500,000 statue?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

But earlier this year, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan was pushing to erect a statue on the Illinois Capitol grounds of former U.S. Speaker of the House Denny Hastert.

Hastert essentially said, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

At the point Hastert declined the honor, he already was under investigation by the feds for the manner in which he allegedly funneled hush money to a former student.

abuse from the period Hastert coached and taught at Yorkville High School.

In fairness to Madigan, he had no idea of any problems lurking when he recommended the honor.

But it raises the question: “Why should state government even consider spending money on a statue to honor a politician when it’s flat-out broke?”

The answer, of course, is that’s what politicians do.

The political class exists for its own benefit.

And they like to laud one another with honors.

Is there nothing they won’t do to honor themselves?

Look no further than the Illinois Statehouse, which is a rogue’s gallery of political miscreants.

On the second floor, you’ll find portraits of Otto Kerner, Dan Walker and George Ryan.

All served as governor, and all ended up in prison.

Rod Blagojevich, our only former governor currently incarcerated, does not have a portrait in the statehouse – yet.

But my favorite painting in the building is one of former Illinois Secretary of State and Speaker of the House Paul Powell.

Powell’s motto was, “There’s only one thing worse than a defeated politician, and that’s a broke one.”

When Powell died in 1970, more than $800,000 was found stuffed in shoe boxes in the closet of his Springfield hotel room.

That would be about $4.9 million in today’s money.

And Paul Powell never drew a salary greater than $30,000.

Powell’s portrait used to hang in the visitors gallery of the Illinois House.

Whenever I’d walk by it, I liked to give the picture frame a nudge.

As with so many Illinois politicians, he deserves to be remembered the way he was – crooked.

Redskins inherit double the practice games

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – One of the perks of hosting a basketball shootout is getting to play at home. The team is in a familiar setting and no travel is involved.

One of the problems that comes with hosting a shootout is that if a team drops out unexpectedly, it’s the host’s job to come up with a solution.

That happened to the Morris girls basketball team at the Morris Ladies Shootout, as Deerfield dropped out of the event, leaving a hole in the schedule.

As a result, Morris coach Kate Carey had her team play Deerfield’s schedule as well, meaning the Redskins would play games at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Tuesday instead of their regularly scheduled 3, 5 and 7 o’clock games.

It didn’t seem to bother them, as they won their first four games, playing in Deerfield’s stead to beat East Aurora and Geneseo.

In their regularly scheduled games, they topped Pleasant Plains and Waubonsie Valley.

The Deerfield slot saw a game against defending shootout champion Canton and the Morris schedule was against Yorkville later in the evening.

Morris rolled over Waubonsie Valley, racing to a 10-0 lead early before holding a 26-3 advantage at halftime. The game ended in a 43-15 Redskins victory that fielded everyone on the team with significant court time.

“We took on Deerfield’s games,” Carey said. “It’s good for us because we are getting everyone a lot of reps and we have been able to try people at positions they don’t normally play. And we have been able to give a lot of the players breaks so we don’t get too worn down.”

One fact evident in the game against Waubonsie Valley was the Redskins were enjoying themselves. No matter the combination on the floor, the team meshed well and had fun playing the game.

“This is a fun group of girls,” Carey said. “We have a lot of girls that have a lot of length to them, a big wingspan.

“Everybody has played well so far,” Carey said. “It’s been fun to see.”

The tournament continues Wednesday, with games running from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

“With Kelly around the last couple of years, Sydney has been able to play off of her.

This year, she will have a bit more of a target on her back when it comes to other teams, but she will be able to handle it. Her biggest strength has always been her defense, anyway, so if we play solid defense this year, that will be our catalyst. Also, Brooklyn has another year of experience, so that will do nothing but improve her game. We have only been playing for a week or so this summer, but she’s done a great job so far.”

MORRIS – For the last few years, the focus for other teams when it came to the Minooka girls basketball team was Kelly Carnagio.

Now, Carnagio has graduated, and the Indians will have to adjust to life without her.

But, with a talented roster, Minooka may not miss a beat.

The Indians went 20-7 last year, including an 11-3 mark in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Returning from that team as starters are senior Sydney Arlis and junior Brooklyn Bachmann. Arlis averaged 12 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game last year, while Bachmann put up 9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

Seniors Heather Bonde, Courtney Kurtz and Kathleen Gossen and juniors Hailey Arlis and Abby Holloway also return. New members to the varsity team are juniors Hannah Godwell, Layren Heafy and Ellie Rivera.

In a 24-20 loss to Lincoln-Way East on Tuesday in the Morris Ladies Shootout, both teams had trouble getting going offensively as the Griffins took a 9-6 lead at halftime.

Holloway and Bachmann each had a basket for Minooka, while Sydney Arlis and Rivera each made a free throw.

Coal City girls view summer games as learning processes

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After finishing with a 21-8 record last season, and also going 10-1 in the Interstate Eight Conference, Coal City’s girls basketball team saw a bulk of their production from that successful squad leave because of graduation.

As a result, Coaler coach Brad Schmitt views the summer season, which includes the Morris Ladies Shootout, as a time to rebuild.

“That’s exactly what this summer is for,” he said after his team lost a 54-20 decision to a powerful Lincoln-Way West squad. “We have a lot of young kids and there is going to be a huge learning curve.

“Some of them aren’t comfortable yet with what we are trying to get them to do, they are not real comfortable with each other and are still figur-

ing out what everyone can do.

As a result, right now, they are thinking about doing something instead of just doing it.

We have to get it to where it’s second nature and they aren’t taking that time to think. But, again, that’s what the summer is for.”

In the game against Lincoln-Way West, the Coalers had a number of offensive plays involving cuts to the basket. They were able to get to open spaces and teammates with the ball got it to them in time to shoot. Unfortunately, the shots didn’t fall nearly as often as they liked. That was progress that Schmitt liked to see.

“We know we aren’t going to win a lot of games in our summer season,” he said. “But it was encouraging to see our offense work the way it did.

this summer. But getting the ball to the players in the right spots is a good start. If we can keep doing that, those shots will fall.”

The only starter returning for the Coalers is senior Makenna Emerson, who averaged 4 points and 3.5 rebounds a game last year. Other returning players are seniors Abby Washburn and Taylor Meents and juniors Makenzie Bugg and Kennady Clayburn. Incoming members of the varsity team are juniors Madison Halliday, Cali Caruso and Leah Campos as well as sophomores Bridgette Kazlauric and Hannah Best.

“We didn’t have a couple of our post players today, and that hurt us,” Schmitt said.

“We don’t have a lot of size to begin with. But the girls that were here got a lot of time on the court and they are learning how to play together.”

Note that a nine lead is always top of nothing, unless you use coded leads, when a 10 or a nine shows zero or two higher cards and would be either top of nothing or from a suit headed by Q-10-9, K-10-9 or A-10-9.

South’s sequence indicates a balanced hand with a good 22 to 24 points. North raises to three no-trump, expecting his partner to waltz home.

However, it is preferable to have 15 points opposite 14, instead of 23 opposite 6. With the points more evenly divided, moving between the two hands is much easier.

If declarer leads low to his jack, he wins when East holds the king and queen. Take driving precautions to deal with aging eyes Dear Dr. K: I am in my 60s.

Over the last few years, my night vision has gotten worse, and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to drive at night.

What can I do to continue driving safely after dark?

Dear Reader: Night vision does start to decline as we get older, usually after age 50. Perhaps you’ve noticed more difficulty seeing in dim light, or maybe you’re more bothered by the glare from headlights.

Problems with night vision are the result of several changes to the eye that occur with aging. The first change involves the iris and pupil.

As we age, the iris muscle weakens and becomes less responsive. The iris muscle surrounds an empty, circular

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff space: the pupil. The iris muscle can make the pupil wide or narrow. As the muscle weakens, the pupil shrinks and doesn’t open as wide to let light in.

After light passes through the pupil, it passes through the lens and then falls on the back of your eye, the retina.

As we age, the lens takes on a yellowish-brown tinge. This change allows less light to pass through to the retina.

Finally, with aging, the retina loses some rod cells.

These are the structures responsible for black-and-

white night vision. All of these changes make it more difficult to see in dim light and darkness.

I spoke to my colleague, Dr. Eli Peli, a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He suggested taking the following measures to keep night driving safe: • Make sure you can see well enough to drive. Get a comprehensive vision exam.

It should include tests for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The first three become more common as a person ages.

• Check your mirrors.

Switch your rearview mirror to the “night” setting. This dims the reflection of head-

lights in the mirror.

• Clean your glass. Scrub your front and rear windshields inside and outside to remove any streaks that may intensify glare. Make sure your mirrors and headlights are grime-free as well. Clean your eyeglasses, too. You can get sealed wipes to keep in the glove compartment or side pocket of the car, to make cleaning the inside of the windshield easy.

• Keep your eyes moving.

Don’t lock your gaze on the center of the road. Constantly scan the horizon for flashes that can signal oncoming traffic.

• Stay off the road at sunrise and sunset. Glare is usually the biggest issue for older drivers. But glare from the

sun is worse than headlight glare. It can be blinding.

After you reach the age of 50, an annual eye checkup is important. That’s true even if you’re not bothered by nighttime glare.

My patients sometimes think a checkup will just discover changes in the eye that nothing can be done about – so why bother? In fact, some common problems that develop with age – such as glaucoma or cataracts – can be fixed completely. That makes everything that requires vision – not just night driving – better.
