cchapman@shawmedia.com SENECA – A 96-year-old Seneca man was killed Monday afternoon in a crash with a semi truck.

Ted Szafranski of Seneca was westbound on Route 6 near Bluff Road when he hit a semitrailer going east headon, according to a news release from Grundy County Coroner John Callahan’s office. Szafranski was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:30 p.m.

No one else was in the vehicle with Szafranski.

Seneca police are handling the investigation and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department is doing the crash reconstruction, according to

A pickup versus truck crash on Route 6 in Seneca occurred Monday afternoon, killing a Seneca man who was driving the pickup. the release. Illinois State Police was called to do a truck inspection. Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the truck “burst into flames.”

An autopsy is planned for Tuesday, Coroner Callahan said in the release, and the crash remains under investigation.

No one else was injured in the crash. Dite said the front end of the vehicle was destroyed. There was no information in reports on whether the home’s residents were home at the time, Dite said.

BRIEF Man ejected from car in alleged DUI crash

MORRIS – A Morris man was ejected from his vehicle late Friday night after crashing while allegedly driving under the influence.

Benjamin R. Price, 42, of Morris, was found laying face down in a culvert on the northwest corner of Ashton Road and west Route 6, according to a Morris police report. Police observed the vehicle, still running, in a field on the northeast side of the street. Price was confused and unable to explain what happened, according to the report.

He was taken to Morris Hospital.

The report states Price allegedly made an improper turn and was ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle continued to travel until coming to a stop in the field. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Price was charged with driving under the influence.

He also was cited for improper lane use, failure to wear a seat belt and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was given a July 13 court date.

Minooka teenager publishes second book; ‘You’ll Be Like Faye’ available to buy online

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – While most 5-year-old girls are playing with dolls and dress-up clothes, J.C. Buchanan of Channahon was picking up a pen and paper with aspirations of becoming a published author.

“I began writing when I was 4 years old, but when I was 5, I told my mom that I wanted to publish a book by the time I was 10,” J.C. said.

Now at 14 years old, J.C. is publishing her second book, “You’ll Be Like Faye,” which took her two years to complete, with the help of parents, Joe and Tara Buchanan, as well as friends.

J.C. said it took her took roughly three months to complete the first draft of the 50,000-word book. Then editing and rewrites came into play, bringing the total commitment to two years. She wrote about 10 hours a week, along with complying with her school studies.

“Joe and I read the book aloud to one another and asked ourselves, ‘Is this scene relevant?’ or ‘Does this part really make sense?’ and then we would give her an assignment to fix those areas,” Tara said.

Republican Committee forwards new name for aldermanic seat

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – David Valdivia has withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant Morris Second Ward Alderman seat. In response, the Grundy County Republican Central Committee nominated Thomas Hougas for consideration by Mayor Richard Kopczick and the City Council to fill the vacant seat.

“I’ll take everything under consideration,” Kopczick said Monday.

Hougas said Monday he’s ready to serve the people of the Second Ward, listen to their concerns and address what might come before the City Council. Hougas said he looks forward to speaking with Kopczick in the near future.

Hougas is chairman of the Grundy County Real Estate Tax Board of Review, and previously was a member of the Seneca Plan Commission.

The Republican Committee’s news release said Hougas

has experience in business development, consulting and computer applications, and is a road construction consultant.

The seat opened May 4 when former Alderman Ken Thomas Sereno resigned Hougas after 34 years.

Valdivia received the Republican Central Committee’s nomination for consideration last David month after a Valdivia caucus.

On June 1, Kopczick tried to appoint former Alderman Julian Houston, who also is a Republican, to Julian the open seat, Houston but the appointment was voted down 3-4.

Houston lost the Republican

primary election to Alderman Doug Hayse. Sereno reportedly requested the mayor appoint the seat to Houston upon his resignation.

“I’ve been coming to council meetings for 10 years before I ran for office,” Houston said Monday. “I feel the gentlemen wanting the position don’t know the city and the issues like I do.”

Houston said it should be about what’s best for Morris, not one party against the other.

“I’m nobody’s favorite and nobody’s ‘yes’ man,” Houston said. “I’m not going to mince words and I think that’s what the committee has against me.”

According to Illinois Municipal Code, the mayor has 60 days to appoint someone, at which time the council has

Republican Committee Chairman Michael Mattingly said Monday Valdivia’s decision was not the outcome he hoped for, but he understands his frustration.

“The mayor needs to act promptly on the nomination of Tom Hougas. Mr. Hougas is highly qualified to serve as alderman and the Republican Party is proud to nominate him,” Mattingly said in the Republican Central Committee’s news release.

As for what the political future holds for Valdivia, he said he will remain interested.

“We’ll see where we are in 2017, but I’m now supporting Tom Hougas,” Valdivia said.

30 days to vote on the appointment. If the appointment is voted down, the mayor has 30 days from the vote to appoint another alderman.

If the mayor’s next appointment also is voted down, he can appoint either of the two appointees he put before the council, and that person will serve as alderman until the next election for the seat.

Kopczick said the next appointment likely will come July 6. Valdivia said although he thought the city could use his input, he wanted to move forward and focus on matters he’s involved in.

“I’ve been on many job interviews, so I know when I’m not getting the job,” Valdivia said.

District 54 board approves administrators pay

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Grade School District 54 students will return to the same faces in professional positions at Shabbona Middle and White Oak Elementary schools this fall.

The board approved a 1.63 percent raise on a 3-1 vote for Chris Maier, district principal, at a salary of $84,166.67

and a stipend of $17,000.00; Melissa Lohse, director of special populations, with a salary of $84,323.49 and a stipend of $ 5,000; Chris Popidindski, associate principal, with a salary of $68,837.69 and a stipend of $5,000.

Bonnie Cap voted against all three contracts saying she was not comfortable with the stipends.

“Because we hired a sup-

port person, I believe those positions don’t have the same job duties,” Cap said after the meeting. “I don’t agree with the stipend in general.”

In 2013, the district moved to the one district principal model, with two associate principals, one at each school, because of budgetary restraints.

At that time, Superintendent Teri Shaw said they added a stipend to several positions to

cover additional duties they were given.

Last June, the board approved the position of dean/ athletic director at Shabbona Middle School to help decrease those additional duties.

Cap said she would be more comfortable if the stipends were decreased with the added help.

The board voted 4-0 to approve the contracts of Scott

Stehlik, associate principal, with a salary of $60,974.72, and Jessica Boe, dean/activities director with a salary of $50,811.42.

When they were hired, a stipend was not added to their contract.

Cap, who voted for the raises and stipends last year, said a month later that she regretted the vote. This year, she voted “no.”

Bzdill said to the committee the first group to gain membership would be invite only, and following members would gain entry on a sponsorship basis.

The demographic Bzdill has in mind is a 35-and-older crowd looking to have a drink and relax in quiet, a departure from aiming at the 21- to 25-year-old bar crowd, which he said tends to be a bit noisier.

The committee unanimously made the recommendation in hopes of increasing business downtown.

“I think it sounds like a great use of Liberty Street real estate,” Alderman Don Hansen said to Bzdill.

Bzdill, a local attorney, said when he began practicing law in Morris 20 years ago, there was more foot traffic.

MORRIS – Although no action was taken regarding the vacant Morris Second Ward alderman seat or the potential medical marijuana dispensary location, other topics were addressed at Monday night’s city council meeting.

The Morris City council voted, 6-0, to renew health insurance coverage for city employees with BlueCross BlueShield for July 1 through June 30, 2016. Alderman Bill Martin was absent because of work.

The Finance and Administration Committee recommended June 5 the renewal of the plan after a meeting with Account Executive Alex Edwards, who said the plan is rare, was grandfathered in and no longer is offered to new employers.

“At this point in time, it

makes sense to stay grandfathered in,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Monday. “We are keeping an eye on things in regards to the Affordable Care Act, but the city will never pay the ‘Cadillac Tax.’ ” The ACA’s “Cadillac Tax” waits in the wings. For taxable years beginning in 2018, the ACA imposes a 40 percent excise tax on high-cost group health coverage.

Flooding may continue as more rain expected Officials advise to avoid flooded roadways

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Heather Stanford of Morris had watched the water rise near her camper at Morris Rod and Gun Club since Saturday and decided to just stick it out, since flood waters covered the road to get home.

“Where my campsite is there is no standing water now,” she said Monday. “But earlier today, I watched it rise six inches in about 20 minutes before it went back down.”

Bill Nelson, with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, said those waters will more than likely continue to rise over the next few days as rain is expected to continue.

“There is more rain on the way,” he said. “There are also heavy cells going along Interstate 88, which will feed into the Grundy area from rivers.”

As of 4:45 p.m. Monday, the Illinois River was at 16.35 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Despite the amount of rain, so far local police and fire agencies have had few incident reports related to the flooding.

A little water, or in some cases a few feet of water, won’t stop determined drivers trying to wind their way around closed roads east of Morris.

Tim Pfaff of Morris used his Jeep to navigate to and from

town, with Bungalow Road closed because of water on the roadway and water flowing at a steady pace across Gun Club Road.

Saratoga Township had staff on Gun Club Road trying to prevent semi-trucks from entering on the south end because it is not a truck route, but for some that is the only way they could get to where they are going.

A handful of campers at the club were on high ground, but the roads leading to and from their campsite were either impassable or would be soon as the water rises. So they’ve decided to wait it out and said they have enough food if they get stuck at their site.

Stanford said even if she made it out of the club safely, she was notified by her neighbors that Cambridge Drive, where she lives, also is covered by more than a foot of water.

Members and club staff hooked up as many campers as they could to trucks, and towed them to a dry area of the club to prevent further damage from the rising waters.

Turn around, don’t drown

Morris Fire and Ambulance Protection District Chief Tracey Steffes said Monday that residents should avoid driving through or walking through water.

“The big campaign is ‘Turn Around Don’t Drown,’ ” he said. “It’s hard to tell the depth of the water.”

He said rapidly moving water on a roadway only requires six inches of water to move a car.

“If you can go around, go around,” he said. “It’s not good to be in the water in the car personally or mechanically. Your life is not worth it.”

Steffes also advises residents to avoid wading in the flood waters.

He said a person can be walking on the road and take one step where the road turns or where there is a driveway, and find themselves in a ditch or culvert with rapid moving water that can pull a person under. He also advised residents to stay out of closed parks.

“The parks are closed for one reason. It’s a safety issue,” he said.

First responders can’t always get to a location quickly enough when residents are in closed areas.

Owner of landmark Iowa soda fountain dies at 95 The ASSOCIATED PRESS WILTON, Iowa – For most of his life, George Nopoulos delighted customers at his family’s soda fountain, helping turn the small-town gathering spot into an Iowa landmark visited by celebrities and politicians.

Nopoulos died of natural causes Sunday evening at a retirement home in Wilton, Iowa, said his wife and business partner of 65 years, Thelma Nopoulos. He was 95.

DAYTON – Early Sunday morning, a Marseilles man was shot in the leg by another Marseilles man, police said.

Lawrence D. Applebee, 36, of Marseilles, was arrested by LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies at about 3:40 a.m. Sunday at 3074 E. 1929th Road in Dayton, according to a news release from the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department. The LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s

Zito, a 2-time World Cup winner with Brazil, dies at 82 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAO PAULO – Zito, the leader of Brazil’s World Cup-winning teams in 1958 and 1962, has died, Brazilian club Santos says. He was 82.

The cause of the former Santos midfielder’s death was not officially announced Monday, but Zito had been battling Alzheimer’s disease and last year suffered a stroke that left him hospitalized for more than a month.

Zito scored one of the goals when Brazil defeated Czechoslovakia, 3-1, in the 1962 final. Zito was considered by many a mentor to the young Pele.

Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers earns ‘Straight As’ for patient safety among U.S hospitals MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is one of 182 hospitals in the nation being recognized for achieving “Straight As” on the Hospital Safety Score.

The Hospital Safety Score is a publicly published report that rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital, according to a news release from Morris Hospital.

Since first launching in June 2012, the Hospital Safety Score has issued letter grades to hospitals seven times, or twice annually, with the

Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Score report being the most recent.

According to The Leapfrog Group, the national nonprofit hospital safety organization which administers the Hospital Safety Score, an A grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care.

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score, repre-

senting a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm.

More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in April 2015, with about 31 percent receiving an A grade. In Illinois, 50 of 116 hospitals received an A on the latest report card, according to the release.

“Straight A’s validates Morris Hospital’s achievement in preventing harm within the hospital, and we are proud to recognize the efforts of the care providers and staff,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in the release.

Tara said this book is difficult to summarize without giving away the entire plot. “It’s a mystery book about teenagers in a suburban setting. That’s the best way to describe the entire book without giving away too much,” she said.

J.C. said the book came out of a failed short story she was writing. She pulled some of the characters out of that story, and with the help of her dad, worked on better and more exciting plots.

“When I’m writing, I like it when I can reveal things for the mystery and watch the characters take me places,” she said.

All writers experience successes and failures while writing, which can make it a frustrating, yet rewarding, process.

“One of my successes was that I grew through writing,” J.C. said. “This book has more complex themes, but it was easier to write because I prepared an outline, so I knew where the book was going.

With the last book, I didn’t do an outline, and it was spiraling all over the place.”

Another success was enlisting the help of a good friend, Angelica Fernandez, to illustrate the book. “I wanted an illustrator, because you don’t see illustrations in books like this much anymore,” J.C. said.

She said the most difficult

part, or a failure, was the end of the book.

“I wrote the ending so many times I got sick of it. Then once it was written, I had to edit it,” J.C. recalled. “I had to take a week off of writing the ending, so it took me about two months to finally finish the ending of the book.”

J.C. has the drive for a third book, but isn’t sure what she will do just yet. She is thinking about a spin-off of one of the characters in her latest book, “You’ll Be Like Faye.” In her spare time, she loves to read, blog about books, make movies, hangout with friends and volunteer at her church.

OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dispensary will be for medical purposes

To the Editor: In response to the article “Dispensary Debate” that was in the Sunday, June 14, 2015, edition of the Morris Herald-News, one needs to understand what the subject is. It is a medical marijuana dispensary. Medical is the key word. It’s not a head shop.

People not aware of what is happening on the medical front today assume that the old Rockwell site will not only sell marijuana but also lava lamps and day glow posters.

In addition to people getting up to speed, this drug can

give comfort to patients under care, as Jo Anne Gretencord has so bravely admitted to the benefits of the drug during treatment.

My mother’s best friend, at 90 years old and a staunch Republican, felt blessed to receive this drug to relieve her pain. And it did. My mother is 93 years old and in declining health. I will not hesitate for a second to acquire this drug – unfortunately illegally if I have to – to relieve and improve her final days.

Wake up people. Don’t deny reality.

Rauner taking budget fights out of Springfield Gov. Bruce Rauner gave rip-roaring speeches in several Democratic legislative districts last week denouncing the state’s Democratic leadership. All of his visits were accompanied by Illinois Republican Party news releases bashing area Democratic legislators for being in the back pockets of House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton.

Some are warning that this tour is only making it more difficult to cut a budget deal before the government shuts down. By belittling legislators in front of their constituents, those lawmakers are going to get their backs up and switch to a campaign war footing just like Rauner appears to be doing. When that happens, they won’t want to cooperate.

But if you look at the numbers, Rauner did quite well in all of those districts.

The governor won 15 of the current 39 Democratic Senate districts last year, some by quite a lot. Despite what you may read, many of the Demo-

cratic-drawn districts are not prohibitively partisan.

Add in all the Republican Senate districts he won, and Rauner took 35 Senate districts to then-Gov. Pat Quinn’s 23, and came very close to tying Quinn in one other (Sen. Linda Holmes). I used Scott Kennedy’s indispensable IllinoisElectionData.com website to compile these numbers.

The governor was in Democratic Sen. Gary Forby’s district last week. Rauner stomped Gov. Pat Quinn in Forby’s deep southern Illinois turf, 62-31. That same day, Gov. Rauner appeared in the Metro East, an area represented by Democratic Sens. Bill Haine and James Clayborne.

Rauner won both of those districts as well, 56-38 and 4847.5, respectively. Rauner also stopped in Democratic Rep. Mike Smiddy’s Quad Cities area district, which he won last year, 55-41.

The Rauner folks are most likely looking at these results and thinking their guy can help take out some of those

Yet, all of those Democrats have withstood Republican victories at the top of the ticket in past years. Forby, who was first elected to the House 14 years ago, is a prime example. The House and Senate Republicans have spent millions of dollars attempting to unseat him because they’ve long recognized his district isn’t nearly as Democratic as his winning margins would suggest.

Partisanship is only one consideration when drawing district maps. Most are drawn because the incumbents or certain types of candidates can win them. Forby is a wildly pro-coal social conservative and NRA poster boy and, simply put, his people love him. There’s a good reason why Rauner used a recording of Forby (without Forby’s per-

mission, of course) attacking Quinn in a campaign robocall.

Presidential years are also quite different than “off” years, when governors run.

Next year will be tougher to defeat these legislators because Democrats tend to vote in much higher numbers during presidential elections.

Even so, the Democrats do know that next year will be unlike any other because Rauner’s pledge to spend $20 million during the campaign targeting 20 Democrats for defeat means they will not have a financial advantage for the first time in decades.

Rauner’s $20 million pledge was first reported by Champaign News-Gazette reporter Tom Kacich. A prospective Republican candidate told Kacich that Rauner let him in on the secret while asking him to run. State law prohibits coordination between independent expenditure committees and candidates.

Promising to spend a million bucks each on 20 people to lure candidates into the race

might be deemed coordination. Candidates could bust the state’s contribution caps on their own by contributing at least $100,000 to their campaign funds (perhaps even by taking out loans from certain wealthy individuals), which would then allow Gov. Rauner and his pals to give as much money to the candidates as they desired. Gov. Rauner could also funnel money through the state party, which could then spend on behalf of the candidates. Or he could funnel his cash through a “dark money” committee.

Whatever the case, the House Democrats recently distributed a guide to some of their members about how to deal with Republican “trackers.” The Democrats say they feel fairly confident about their odds, but they’re obviously worried about what’s about to hit them.

T.J. Condon honored in NJCAA Division III

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com Last year, as a freshman, Minooka graduate T.J. Condon earned first-team NJCAA first-team All-American honors for Joliet Junior College as well as winning a Gold Glove award as a catcher.

This year was, surprisingly, even better. All he did was repeat as a first-team All-American, becoming the Wolves’ first two-time firstteam All-American since fellow Minooka grad Joe Stover in 2007-08, in helping lead JJC to a national runner-up finish at the NCJAA tournament. To top it off, he was named as the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year.

Ranking in the top 10 in a number of offensive categories, Condon demonstrated his remarkable ability to hit the ball and hit it far. The sophomore led the nation with 24 doubles, nine triples and came in fifth in home runs with 10, which translated into a .738 slugging percentage – the seventh-highest in the country.

Condon led the D-III ranks with 75 RBIs, which complemented the fifth-most hits with 83. He finished with a .395 batting average and a .455 onbase percentage. From behind home plate, Condon proved to be one of the top defensive catchers in the land. He ranked third in runners caught stealing, throwing out 24 of 62 players attempting steals for a .387 caught stealing percentage.

Condon accumulated 202 putouts and 44 assists, while committing just three errors for a .988 fielding percentage.

“I am totally shocked to get this award,” Condon said. “It’s amazing, really. I am glad I got it.

“I couldn’t have done what I have done without Coach (Wayne) King and (assistant) Coach (Gregg) Braun. They have helped me become a better person, both on and off the field. My confidence level is pretty high, and it wouldn’t be where it is without those coaches.”

“South Suburban had a pitcher that quite a few scouts were coming to see. I hit three home runs in my first three at-bats against him. I finished the game going 5 for 5 and had eight RBIs. I couldn’t believe it when it was happening. It was like an XBox game or something.”

“Defensively, he shut down other teams’ running games, and offensively, he had 75 RBIs this year, which is second in JJC history. He did everything. He was truly a leader, from the dugout to in the field to at the plate,” Braun said.

“He and I work together, we talk between innings. If I need him to go to the mound and

calm a pitcher down, he can do that. It’s like having a third coach on the field. We’ve been blessed to have him for the last two years. Plus, he is just a workhorse. When we were in North Carolina for the World Series, I got up in the morning and he was outside, running laps around the hotel to get his running work in.”

Despite all the accolades he

earned in his freshman year, he felt that season was incomplete, as the Wolves did not reach the NJCAA World Series. This year, JJC finished as the national runner-up, and the invidivual acclaim just put the icing on an already sizeable cake for Condon.

“I was really glad about how the team did this year,” he said. “The overall goal is to

win it all, and we got just about as close as you can. It was great to get to go to the national tournament and have a chance to play for the title. That’s about all you can ask.”

The season didn’t start out as one that had the earmarks of a national contender for the Wolves, as they struggled out of the gate, winning only one of their first 10 games and going 3-12 through 15 games.

After that, however, they caught fire and finished with a 38-25 record, going 35-13 in their final 48 games.

“At first, we didn’t have good chemistry,” Condon said.

“We were making a lot of errors and our pitchers were walking and hitting a lot of batters. We finally came together as a team when we figured out that there was no way we could do it that way. You can’t give up free bases and baserunners.”

In late April, Condon put together a spectacular performance in JJC’s 18-6 victory over South Suburban.

“South Suburban had a pitcher that quite a few scouts were coming to see,” Condon said. “I hit three home runs in my first three at-bats against him. I finished the game going 5 for 5 and had eight RBIs. I couldn’t believe it when it was happening. It was like an XBox game or something.

“Another game that really stands out is Coach King’s 1,000th career win. It’s always going to be a great memory for me to be on the team that got him that win.”

Condon has signed with Faulkner University in Birmingham, Alabama to complete his collegiate baseball career in the NAIA. “We were in Tennessee for our spring trip,” Condon said.

“The coach from Columbus College actually talked to the coach from Faulkner about me. Then the Faulkner coach called me and we set up a visit.

“Everything was real nice there, and the warm weather was a big part of the decision.

You get to play baseball outside the whole year. I am thinking about going into sports medicine, and they have a good program for that there.”

MORRIS – Summer basketball season is in full swing in Morris, starting with the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Tournament last week.

This week, it’s time for the Morris Ladies Shootout, a 32team event at Morris Community High School for the 19th straight year. Games tip off at 8 a.m. Tuesday and will take place each hour on four courts.

The main gym at the high school and the three courts in the District 101 Rec Center will be used.

The 32 teams will be divided into four eight-team pools, with each pool playing round-robin Tuesday. The results from Tuesday will determine the matchups for Wednesday’s bracket play.

Storms not needed to rain on Cubs’ parade

It gave them a rainout just about the time the bullpen could use it most, and it won’t even get hit with a doubleheader Tuesday, because Monday’s game was rescheduled for what had been a mutual off day Aug. 24. Manager Joe Maddon suggested even before the game was called that a day off might return his well-used pen to “solvency.”

But even before the helping hand from the heavens, a funny thing was happening to a relief corps that had been a shaky, work in progress since April: A bullpen with no designated closer and no identifiable eighth-inning ace, which add-

ed a ninth arm Sunday, has a 1.54 ERA in its past 20 games – second-lowest in the majors during that span.

It’s .183 batting-average-against in that span is best in the majors.

Why? Nobody knows – as in nobody out there knows when he’s going to get the call to warm up anymore.

Since Hector Rondon had his closer title pulled more than a week ago, the Cubs have gone with committee approaches to almost every role in the pen.

“I think it helps a lot,” Maddon said. “I think for the most part it’s always made sense to do it like we’re doing it right now – unless you have this spectacular group that’s just able to do it often and do it against anybody.”

The Cubs looked briefly like they might have the start of something like that, when Rondon and Pedro Strop came off of strong finishes in 2014

to take the back-end roles out of spring training, and Justin Grimm and Neil Ramirez made it four power guys in the late-inning mix.

Early injuries and poor performances derailed the best-laid plans quickly.

Grimm has since returned strong from an early season forearm injury. And Ramirez (shoulder) is scheduled Wednesday to start an injury-rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee, nearly two months after going on the DL. “He could be a huge part of what we’re doing,” Maddon said. “Getting him back could really solidify that whole group.”

Meanwhile, the mix-andmatch, any-inning approach has helped overcome short and poor starts in recent weeks by Tsuyoshi Wada, Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks, helped cover extra-inning affairs two of the past three games.

Bears begin training as Hawks prepare for the end How ’bout them Blackhawks?

It would be a gross understatement to do any less than acknowledge that Chicago’s hockey team has claimed a spot in the hearts of sports fans once reserved exclusively for championship contending Bears teams. But it also would be a significant overstatement to suggest Chicago is anything but a “Bears Town” when the Monsters of the Midway are in action.

It is worth noting because in the same week the Hawks are wrapping up their 2014-15 season, the Bears come to work for the first time to begin their 2015 campaign.

Veteran minicamp taking place today through Thursday at Halas Hall is mandatory and it is significant as the Bears punch the clock for the first time under general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox. There’s been a palpable

vibe around town since Pace hired Fox and new free agents and rookies started rolling into Halas Hall that last year’s disaster might actually have just been a bad slump brought on by jokers pretending to be coaches and scouts.

The sense seems to be that this team will be better if for no other reason than Fox and coordinators Vic Fangio and Adam Gase are here, proven winners with established track records. But is that a theory we should trust?

Some analysis and a little common sense say be careful Bears fans. If the fix was that easy, every team would make it. Fox and Gase are a clear step up over Marc Trestman and Aaron Kromer, but coaches coach and players win games.

Maybe a great NFL coach can get you a win or two, but if you don’t have the talent ... .

Last year’s Broncos were one of the top offenses in the

Is there any chance Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White, Eddie Royal and Martellus Bennett will remind us of their peers in Denver?

By any measure the only spot on offense where you’d rather be the Bears is at running back, where Forte is an easy choice over Anderson, but even there, Forte gives you little or no help between the tackles.

I am actually excited about the prospects for this Bears offense and am living these days in the very small neighborhood of folks expecting a

big step up from Cutler.

But that reasonable analysis I talked about shows the Bears have maybe half the talent the Broncos’ offense had last year.

Now, let’s look at Fangio’s 49ers defense. Although the ballclub fell to 8-8, Fangio still conducted a top-five defense in spite of serious injuries to Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman. Fangio’s group last year was led by Justin Smith, Ray McDonald (before his Week 13 release), Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Chris Borland and Antoine Bethea.

Just for grins, plug in Willis and Bowman and is there a single one of these guys who would not only be a Day 1 starter for Fangio in Chicago this year, but maybe even the best defensive player on the team? Pernell McPhee is a fascinating addition. Is there one of those 49er players, with the exception of McDonald, you’d take McPhee over?

Hopefully, we all agree Pace still has a ton of work to do upgrading the talent before we can expect Fox, Fangio and Gase to work their magic.

In the meantime, this week is our first chance to see how a number of veterans who underperformed for the old regime will look in their new schemes. The way Gase and Fangio line them up today will give us a hint as to what they think we might be able to expect come December.

The honeymoon isn’t over yet, but the beginning of the end comes with the first whistle of this week’s minicamp.

Players no longer are here because they want to be. Now they have to be, and we get to begin to see who wants it most and, more importantly, which current Bears actually have it.

Driver without insurance a road hazard to avoid Dear Abby: My 17-year-old stepdaughter, “Audra,” got her driver’s license a few months ago and has started pressuring us to put her on our car insurance. When we told her we can’t afford it, and if she wants to be on the insurance she has to get a job and pay for it, she had a temper tantrum.

About a month ago, my husband wanted her to go to the store for him. We live in a rural area and everything is some distance away. After she left, he asked me if I was mad that he let her take the car.

I told him I thought he was asking for trouble sending her out with no car insurance. He said, “But she wants to drive so badly.” My husband now
