MORRIS – After heated discussion at Tuesday’s Grundy County Board meeting, Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund benefits for county board members will be terminated as of July 1.

The original resolution was a retroactive termination to June 1, in compliance with the IMRF audit responses sent to the retirement fund from Grundy County Treasurer Lori Werden after approval from the board’s Finance Committee and the state’s attorney office.

A recent audit showed board members receiving IMRF benefits they may not have been entitled to because they were not working the required 1,000 hours a year necessary to receive them.

“The original resolution should have stood,” Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said after the meeting. “I’m disappointed it didn’t pass in its original form. It’s a disservice to taxpayers.”

Board member Frank Halpin motioned for a change from June 1 to July 1, which was seconded by Harold Vota.

“My concern is perhaps those in IMRF would have liked to have made some decisions,” Halpin said during the meeting. “Perhaps go to July so people can make decisions.

I think there was very scarce information.”

Halpin stated later he needed the time to contact an IMRF member to see what his alter-

natives are for his retirement.

Werden said Wednesday that prior to Tuesday’s meeting, she had spoken with the personnel committee and the finance committee, as well as emailed the audit findings. In addition, she gave the IMRF forms to the board members three times, and a majority did not return the forms.

Board member Dick Joyce questioned why even have a county board if action is going to be taken by other officials prior to an official vote.

Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman said in defense of the treasurer that she came early enough to rectify the situation prior to June 1, but she was blown off originally. He said the decision on what to do with IMRF would not change whether the date on the resolution was June 1 or July 1, so there wasn’t a reason to extend it.

Board member John Roth asked to have an IMRF representative hold a workshop for board members who are affected by the change.

Board member Debra Warning spoke against the date change, saying board members have a responsibility to read what they are signing and now that they have been made aware, they should rectify it without costing the taxpayers additional fees for June IMRF payments.

Vota disagreed, stating he represents the county daily and it’s all in how you interpret hours.

“I just wanted to make it clear that if you vote yes on this amended termination, that we are knowingly going against the audit and knowingly doing something that is illegal. We do not qualify for these IMRF benefits,” board Vice President David Nelson said.

“Why would we vote yes to extend it by 30 days? That makes no sense, and anyone [who] votes yes to that is voting yes to illegal activity by the county – and I hope the voters of this county pay attention,” he said.

The amendment passed with Joyce, Halpin, Roth, Joyce, Debra Jo Kinsella, Don Neushwander Jr., Mike Onorato, and John Galloway voting for the amendment. Nelson voted no, and Warning, Kerri Courtright, Vicki Gieger, Ann Gill, Ken Iverson abstained.

Werden said Wednesday she has to re-enroll the board members who are in IMRF, make additional payments for June and would again terminate for July 1. She also will be required to change the audit response and she is unaware of what action, if any, IMRF will take.

Limbach, a junior at Morris Community High School, said her passion for flight has grown because her family for the past few years has made a July trip to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture fly-in convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

This year, Limbach and 15-year-old Blake Bybee of Normal are recipients of scholarships from EAA Chapter 95 based at the Morris Municipal Airport, valued at $1,000, to be a co-pilot on a 20-minute flight, and much more, Chapter 95 President Mark Molle said.

The recipients’ love for flying was enhanced with the experience of a free flight from Chapter 95 members.

Chapter 95 will host its annual Young Eagles Day program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Morris Municipal Airport, weather permitting.

MORRIS – When I found out I might fly in a small or experimental aircraft Tuesday, I got a little queasy.

But I didn’t show it. I’m glad I didn’t, because I’d look like a fool if I did.

The flight with Mark Molle, president of EAA Chapter 95, which is based out of Morris Municipal Airport, was as smooth as could be.

As I squeezed my 6-foot frame into the passenger seat of Molle’s Savage Classic – juggling a Canon camera and my phone – suddenly my main concern was that I should’ve worn shorts and a T-shirt like Molle, instead of my dress pants and button-up shirt.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s office will be seeing some changes.

The Grundy County Board approved moving forward with the installation of security and privacy measures for the state’s attorney’s office that includes an electronic entry device for two doors and the addition of a glass partition between the waiting area and where staff conduct business.

“This has been bantered back and forth,” board member Frank Halpin said at the board meeting Tuesday.

“There are other offices who could use funding.”

County Board Chairman David Welter said he has concerns that other offices will come forward, and he encourages them to come to the county board.

The money for the installation will come from the county’s risk management fund.

Board member Dick Joyce said he’d like to see the Facilities Committee look at other offices that also may need security measures and reminded the board that the county had been criticized previously for security measures taken at the 911 and highway buildings.

“I’m very appreciative that

you cut the numbers in half from the original budget,” board member Vicki Geiger said to State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

The original estimate showed the changes could cost up to $40,000, but after the job went out to bid the cost was under $19,000.

“This isn’t just about security, but privileged information,” Geiger said. “We have an obligation to keep information secure.”

The resolution was approved 13-2, with Joyce and Halpin voting no.

Attorney Dan Lombardi will continue to work for the state’s attorney’s office in a part-time temporary position.

The board voted to approve the job after a discussion about the addition of a position within the office.

“Does the county board set the number of attorneys in the state’s attorney office?” Joyce asked before voting on the position.

Geiger asked for clarification that the resolution does not increase the number of assistant state’s attorneys in the office.

“I would say yes, we’re one of the few, if any, to do

this,” Halloran said. “Maybe it could become a trend.”

Principal Kelly Hussey said to the board the idea to make ACT taking a graduation requirement rose out of the school’s Rising Stars committee meetings.

The goal is to maximize the number of students who take it, Hussey said.

Who wants to be herded through congested TSA lines like cattle in an invisible cloud of germs at O’Hare or Midway airports when you can enter Morris Municipal Airport and take off 10 minutes later if you know the right people?

The weather was nice as we took off about 6:30 p.m. with a blue but slightly hazy sky, and sun and a light wind out of the west. We flew south to the Illinois River, and I had new perspective on all the waterways in the area.

I know I don’t have to pay your insurance, but I highly recommend giving kids the chance to fly. It’s free and fun.

He married Alice Parker on January 25, 1979, in Kankakee.

He was the owner of Zingre Crane Service and Zingre Precast, Incorporated. He enjoyed retirement, traveling in his motor home, and visiting with his family. He enjoyed country music and the old time westerns.

British educator Marguerite Patten dies

By DANICA KIRKA The Associated Press LONDON – In many ways, Marguerite Patten was Britain’s first celebrity chef – although she herself would have shunned the term.

The home economist who helped teach Britons how to survive on scarce rations during and after World War Marguerite II died June 4 Patten at age 99, her family said in a statement.

Patten had been living in a nursing home near Richmond, Surrey, since 2011, when a stroke robbed her of her speech. After gaining fame through a wartime program on the BBC, she gave presentations in theaters and community halls for decades, sharing nostalgia and her message that even those on a budget could eat well. Many never tired of hearing her war stories.

“The world will be a lesser place without the beautifully talented Marguerite Patten,” chef Jamie Oliver said.

“She will continue to inspire me. Like many others, I’m so grateful for all the work she did over the years.”

Campaigns such as “Dig for Victory” encouraged Britons to grow their own food.

Soccer fields were transformed into vegetable patches.

Eggs, butter, meat and cheese were all strictly limited.

Squirrels and horses became sources of protein. The enterprising traded recipes for baked hedgehog and carrot fudge. An aspiring actress before the war, Patten was offered the chance to help present a five-minute radio broadcast called the “The Kitchen Front,” which provided nutritional advice and ration-stretching recipes.

Patten took her work on the road, setting up a stall at market squares around the country.

She ventured into factories, developing what she called a “fairground voice” as she talked to groups of 250 people or more.

“We didn’t wait for people to come to us,” Patten told the BBC. “We went wherever people were.”

In the winter months, when there were no imports of fruit or vegetables, Britons had to make do.

Patten recalled people using mashed parsnips with sugar and banana flavoring as a substitute for the fruit.

Patten herself combined margarine, cream and corn starch to make “mock cream” – and made no apology for that, describing it as “jolly good.”

The tough times didn’t end in 1945. The war devastated Britain’s farms and factories, and rationing continued into the 1950s. All the time, Patten was there with advice and a big smile, head slightly tilted to one side, regal but somehow accessible.

She first appeared on BBC television in 1947, presenting a cooking segment in a program called “Designed for Women.” Brisk, clear and matter-of-fact, she educated a generation to abhor food waste.

“There are 10,000 things you can do with leftover foods, but under no circumstances put it in the bin!” Patten told The Associated Press in 2008.

Cookbook: Nostalgic Food and Facts from 1940-1954,” ‘’Spam: The Cookbook” and “Marguerite Patten’s Century of British Cooking.”

She also wrote about preserves, tacos, chutney and soup. Long after rationing ended, Patten still traveled around Britain for decades speaking to groups that ranged from Rotarians to the Oxford Literary Festival.

“I never really went away,” she said in 2009, when asked by the AP about her enduring popularity.

Patten told the BBC she didn’t mind being known as a doyenne at all – “because that sounds respectable.”

“Claiming celebrity – it isn’t such a grand thing as people pretend it is,” she said when her last book was published. “It’s not who we are, it’s what we do I think that’s important.

“I would far rather be called a helpful cook, an imaginative cook or a chef if you want to use that word. But celebrity doesn’t really say much.”

Britain remembered her.

She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1991 for “services to the art of cookery,” and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2010 for “services to the food industry.”

She is survived by her sister Elizabeth; her daughter, Judith; great-grandson, Luke; and two step-grandchildren.

James Last, German-born band leader, dies at 86 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BERLIN – Big band leader James Last, whose style of light orchestral entertainment appealed to a wide audience in his native Germany and abroad, has died.

He was 86.

Last died Tuesday at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, after a “short, serious illness,” his management company said.

“He was an outstanding and important artist who lived for music and who wrote music history,” Semmel Concerts said in a statement posted on its website Wednesday.

Born Hans Last in the north German city of Bremen in 1929, he decided to pursue a musical career in 1943, at a time when Nazi Germany was nearing total defeat. After World War II, Last played double bass in several orchestras before signing his first record deal with Polydor in 1964.

Known to his friends as “Hansi,” he pioneered what became known as “Happy Sound” – crowd-pleasing renditions of swing, jazz and pop songs that Last had either rearranged or composed himself.

“The goal is to get kids interested in aviation,” Molle said.

The average age of the pilot population grows older, he said, and aviation of all types has a better chance at surviving if the Young Eagles program can grow interest among young people.

A typical flight with winds out of the west or southwest will allow planes to take off to the south and over the Illinois River, to the rock quarry and back, for a 10- to 15-minute flight, Molle said. Molle said pilots do not take a child for a flight if either the child, parent or guardian is apprehensive.

“People are scared of small planes, but the pilots are such good people that there hasn’t been a time I didn’t feel safe,” Limbach said.

If by chance the child doesn’t enjoy the flight, they will be taken back sooner.

If they’re having a lot of fun, they might get a few extra minutes out of it, he said.

“We have folks on the ground talking to [parents or guardians] prior to and during the flights,” Molle said. “Half the time, kids end up using the controls a little bit and they come back bragging about it.”

Lucas Crater, who will be a junior at Reed-Custer High School this fall, was one of those children. He won the AirVenture scholarship a few years ago.

Crater has grown into a junior member of sorts in Chapter 95 since his first Young Eagles flight, Molle said. Crater said he is looking to earn a pilot’s license one day. Although he lives in Braidwood, Crater now has a driver’s license so he can hang out at the airport.

“Taildragger Tuesdays,” Molle said, are hosted by Matt and Jana Trofimchuck. Pilots and their friends and family hang out at the hangar for relaxing evenings of flight, food and refreshments.

“The social environment of aviation is clean one,” said John Limbach, Jenna’s father.

of these people will say something if my child is misbehaving and vice versa.”

Although Crater’s interest in flight has been almost lifelong, his desire to fly planes accelerated when he started hanging out around planes with Chapter 95.

Crater said he’ll be performing ground crew duties Saturday, ensuring that flights come in and return without a hitch.

Limbach and her sister, Sam, who is heading to the Navy soon, are the fourth generation of the family to fly, work on or build planes, John Limbach said.

Members of Chapter 95 fly everything from commercial jets to small planes, and sometimes build their own planes.

Each year, Chapter 95 selects one or two area children for scholarships to the EAA AirVenture convention.

“All the planes and pilots around you, from South Africa to Illinois, just talking about planes and flying is really inspiring,” Limbach said.

OPINION Gender, love and respect in our age At one point, there were upward of 50 gender options available for users to choose on Facebook. Things must have changed, because when I checked this morning, it was down to three: male, female and a write-in custom option.

I’ve hesitated to write about the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner media event, because it’s such an intimate matter, even as Jenner appears on the cover of Vanity Fair.

A friend told a story about being among fairly traditional church-going parents who were discussing what they might do if one of their own children expressed a desire to change from male to female or vice versa. “Accept him for who he is,” was the consensus.

When did it become unheard of for a parent to guide a child? In a culture with no guideposts, how can anyone have any freedom?

While we think of freedom as doing whatever we want, we have lost the element of what we ought to do. What’s good for us and for society?

Pope Francis later this month will be issuing a letter – an encyclical, in church lingo – on ecology. Much has already been written on it in advance of its release. The church is already being applauded or condemned for its supposedly sudden enlightened progressivism. This, as is often the case, misses the full picture, the continuum.

Far from alone among popes or religious leaders, he points to a whole picture of who we are and why we are, together in the image and likeness of our Creator. As he talks about the importance of stewardship of creation, he points to stewardship of humanity.

What is good and responsible stewardship of life, liberty and happiness? And yes, what is happiness?

For some weeks now, Pope Francis has been talking about family life – children and marriage. In early April, he said that marriage is inscribed in creation. “The Earth is filled with harmony and trust when the alliance between man and woman is lived properly,” he said. He warned that “we risk taking a step backwards” in seeking to erase the critical nature of the sexual difference.

The Supreme Court may be on the verge of legalizing same-sex marriage across the country. That, much like Bruce/Caitlyn, is not a harbinger of the apocalypse.

We’ve been wandering on the road to confusion and disunion for decades now. And we see its manifestations in the continued erosion of marriage and the further degradation of the relationship between the sexes. We seem to “tolerate” everything but this amazing gift, this miracle of human complementarity.

If Google is to be believed, the British version of Facebook had more than 70 genders at some point. It doesn’t have to be so complicated.

It’s a phrase so often heard in the fast-approaching, good-ol’ summertime.

“Everyone out of the pool” ought to be just as significant. And no, we’re not necessarily backing increased water skimming initiatives or more adult swims.

A heightened focus on pool and open water safety is equally crucial to the swimming or water recreation experience as the thrill of diving in.

Tragedies shouldn’t have to be the catalyst for swimmers and their companions to realize the need to observe vigilance on any body of water. Taking measures can help save lives.

The American Red Cross offers a number of swimming safety tips on its website,

www.redcross.org. These include: • Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards; • Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone; • Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

• Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

• Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate learn-to-swim courses.

• If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers.

Many children who drown in

home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.

• Avoid distractions when supervising children around water.

• If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

• Have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cellphone, life jackets and a first aid kit.

• Know how and when to call 911 or the local emergency number.

The Red Cross also advises to “maintain constant supervision.” We agree.

Swimming and water recreation always should be fun, but it can’t be completely carefree.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After missing several games because of rainouts so far this season, the Morris 13U Tomahawks baseball team was more than happy to get a few innings in Wednesday against the Minooka Rivercats at the John B. Roth Field.

“I think we have lost six regular season games due to the weather this spring. We had a tournament last week that we lost a game on Sunday and we had another tournament where we lost the first day or two beause of rain,” Morris coach Rob Birones said. “We were glad to get this game in, so far.”

Morris, which has finished second in the travel division the last three seasons, trailed Minooka, 6-4, after five innings Wednesday when the game was delayed because of lightning in the area. With the Tomahawks currently in second place in the league and within a chance to win the title if they win all their remaining games, it was clear playing this game was important.

“I will wait three hours to get this one in if I have to,” Birones said.

Minooka took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by John Doligale. A single after that by Cadden Arlis loaded the bases, but Morris pitcher Evan Briones retired the next two hitters to escape the jam.

The Tomahawks tied it in the bottom of the first. Brandon Phelps led off by getting hit by a pitch. An out later, Briones singled to center, and when the throw back to the infield got away, both Morris runners moved up a base to second and third. Logan Edwards then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Phelps.

Minooka did not score in the top of the second before the Morris bats got going again in the bottom. Payton Cummings led off with a single to left and Cody Rogers singled, sending Cummings to third. A bloop single to right by Matt Lopez loaded the bases before Mando Meyer doubled to left-center,

“We didn’t play our best defensively early,” Briones said.

“But these kids can swing the

bats and they have been a pretty good comeback team. They can put up runs in a hurry, so I feel pretty good about our chances in this game.

“These guys have been playing together for four or five years. They are all in the Morris school system, either Shabbona, Saratoga or ICS. They all play on their junior high basketball teams, so they have played with or against each other for a while. Plus, we started practicing in January at Saratoga. A lot of the teams we play have indoor facilities where they can simulate game situations. We don’t have that here, but we do the best we can. We have been up to Bo Jackson’s place in Lockport, and that was a cool thing for the kids. This is a fun group of guys to coach.”

CHICAGO – You can see it Carlos Rodon’s body language. With six starts on his major league ledger, and success rates climbing as he goes along, confidence is no longer an issue.

“After giving up a hit or not executing a pitch, he’s doing a good job moving on to the next one, realizing that one’s over and let’s execute the next pitch,” catcher Tyler Flowers said of Rodon, who pitched six scoreless innings in the White Sox victory 4-2 over the Houston Astros Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

“I saw a little bit of it in the spring and maybe early on this year where he’d kind of dwell on it for a split second and you’d have to remind him ‘Hey, that’s over, let’s execute the next one and get out of this situation.’ I think the maturity is coming on pretty quick.

He’s another guy having good results with that.”

Rodon got out of a “situation” in the fourth inning when the Astros loaded the bases with one out.

His response?

A strikeout of Luis Valbuena and an inning-ending forceout from Jake Marisnick to end the inning to keep himself in a scoreless duel with Astros ace lefty Dallas Keuchel.

Keuchel had escaped a bases-loaded jam of his own in the second after Avisail Garcia, designated hitter Geovany Soto and and Melky Cabrera singled.

Gordon Beckham flied out not deep enough to score Garcia, Flowers struck out and second baseman Emilio Bonifacio hit into a forceout.

In a 116-pitch, six-inning outing, Rodon looked every bit the part of the top-of-the-rotation starter general manager Rick Hahn touted him as when he was drafted third overall a year ago. That hasn’t taken long.

Sox Manager Robin Ventura has watched Rodon’s command get better since he was promoted from the bullpen.

“His stuff is his stuff, which has been good, but we’re also seeing him be able to repeat things a lot more and I think you get a little more feel for your changeup and your secondary pitches that you normally wouldn’t get relieving,” Ventura said before the game.

“Relieving you’re going in you’re trying to throw everything hard and get guys to swing and miss.”

Keuchel, who shut out the Sox on four hits with 11 strikeouts on May 30 in Houston, allowed four hits before giving up a two-run homer to Jose Abreu, his 10th of the season, in the sixth inning, giving Rodon a chance at his second victory without a defeat.

Relying heavily on his sharp slider, Rodon threw a season-high 116 pitches, walking two and allowing four hits while striking out five.

He lowered his ERA to 2.66, the best among Sox starters and higher only than closer David Robertson’s (2.19 going into Tuesday’s game) and Daniel Webb (four scoreless appearances).

He has allowed but one homer in 40 2⁄3 innings, to Josh Phegley. Abreu’s homer was the fourth allowed by Keuchel, who is pitching like an AllStar.

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com DETROIT – When Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and team president Theo Epstein met with Anibal Sanchez, his wife and his agent 2½ years ago in Miami, it was the promise of nights just like Tuesday that motivated the hard sell and the $75 million offer.

How could they have known they’d be on the wrong end of this particular night – a 6-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers – because Sanchez would leak the Cubs’ interest and spur the Tigers to do what he wanted from the start and pay more to keep him?

Or that their Rafael Plan B, Edwin Soriano Jackson, would look so bad for so long for less money by the time he was pulling mopup duty out of the bullpen Tuesday? Never mind that the guy he replaced – $155 million Jon Lester – was their free-agent centerpiece that Sanchez refused to be, at nearly twice the price.

But even after Sanchez added 72/3 scoreless innings to insult in Tuesday’s opener of a two-game series, the Cubs still were in contention in the National League, still had a better record than the perennial-contending Tigers – and wouldn’t trade Sanchez for Lester.

The Cubs are confident enough in what they might be able to do this turnaround season that they still are adding pitching – signing former AllStar closer Rafael Soriano to a minor-league deal Tuesday.

They beat out the Mariners and Rangers for a guy with 117 saves the past three years, who can go a long way to fixing what ails the Cubs’ beleaguered bullpen if he looks anything close to what he looked like most of those three years.

Suppose West leads another spade. Declarer discards a diamond from his hand, plays a heart to his ace, leads the diamond queen to dummy’s ace, ruffs a diamond high, plays a heart to dummy’s jack, ruffs another diamond, leads a heart to the king, and cashes dummy’s three diamond winners.

Wife of transgender hubby refuses to get counseling Dear Abby: Two years ago, I came out as male-to-female transgender. My wife has come around since then, and our second child will be born before I start my transition.
