hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County has approved an agreement that will end the property tax appeal by Morris Cogeneration, LLC for property tax assessments from 2010 through 2014.

Morris Cogeneration’s tax appeal affects several taxing districts, including Grundy County, Aux Sable Township, Aux Sable Township Highway Department, Village of Channahon, Minooka Community High School District 111, Minooka Grade School District 201, Saratoga School District 60C, Morris Community High School District 101, Joliet Junior College, Minooka Fire Protection District, Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District and Three Rivers Library District.

The board approved the resolution during the consent agenda with a 15-0 vote with board member Doug Boresi absent. Morris Cogeneration owns a natural gas-fired cogeneration facility that it is disputing the assessed value of.

The agreement not only settles the dispute for years 2010 through 2014, but also will establish the equalized assessed value for years 2014 through 2018. They agreed upon an

EAV of $11,667,000 for 2010, $10 million for years 2011 and 2012, $9 million for year 2013, and $12 million for 2014, according to the agreement.

The agreement also sets assessment of the plant through 2018. For each assessment year from 2015 to 2017, the plant’s EAV will be set at $12 million.

For 2018, the EAV will be set at $14 million. By agreeing to the settlement, Cogeneration agrees to waive its rights to collect any refunds. The company will sign the agreement once all the taxing districts have approved it, Perry Rudman, assistant Grundy County State’s Attorney said.

Grundy County will need to issue a corrected 2014 tax bill revising the amount of the second installment of the 2014 taxes payable this year.

Despite the agreement for future years, the EAV can be adjusted for new buildings or site improvements. The only way it can be decreased is if any buildings or equipment are destroyed or removed.

Perry Rudman, assistant Grundy County State’s Attorney said that attorney Jack Canna had been working on the case and forwarded it to the county once all the taxing bodies were in agreement, although he was uncertain if all of them had voted on it.

Fire district adopts a K-9 search-and-rescue dog as its newest member

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Last year, Rikki, a 6-month-old German shepherd, was adopted from a rescue in Wisconsin. Now a year older, she’s working as a search-and-rescue dog for the Coal City Fire Protection District with her handler, Lt. Nick Doerfler.

She has had more than 200 training hours to become a search-and-rescue dog and is undergoing additional training to become a cadaver dog.

“What brought it on was we had several drownings last year, and dogs had to be brought in to assist,” Doerfler said. “In addition to that, we have several children with autism in our area who have wandering tendencies. Rikki will be able to help find them.”

Doerfler said in her initial water training for human remains detection from a boat, she was able to alert to 1 millimeter of a scent that was 3 feet under water.

He said a dog trained in water detection can pinpoint an area within a couple feet for each foot below the surface the body is. If a body is trapped 10 feet under water, the dog will give a 20-foot area to search with sonar or divers, narrow-

As a MABAS 15 asset, she will be available to assist other fire protection districts as needed.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said while police agencies in the area have tracking dogs, having another one available is a great idea.

With no other agency in Grundy County having a cadaver dog, Rikki will be valuable to the county.

“It’s definitely a benefit; it gives us access to an extra dog,” Steffes said. “There isn’t always a dog on duty, and handlers are sometimes away for different reasons, so having that dog is a benefit to all of

He said the dog is a tool that can be used to help recover someone after an accident, which brings closure to both the family and the department searching for them. On the law enforcement side, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department had a K-9 retire in March. Nitro’s retirement left the county with one less dog working.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the department is getting a new dog on the force,

purchased thanks to drug forfeiture money from Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland’s office. The dog will be trained in tracking as well as narcotics detection. The department had a dog purchased, but it was found to have health problems when it went for a checkup at a local veterinarian clinic, he said. It will be September or October before the department gets a new dog.

Unlike the typical police dog, Rikki will not be used in

any criminal cases.

“There are two instances where Rikki would not respond,” Doerfler said. “If there is lightning or if it’s a criminal case. She has no protection, and neither do I.” Rikki, like other working dogs, will work only for her handler and is not trained to bite or attack. Doerfler takes care of Rikki, and she goes home with him where she is part of the family.

“It’s a huge commitment.

We try to train every day,” he said. “She gets along well with my kids and our other dog.”

When he brought the idea to the fire district, he had no idea if officials would let the program move forward or if they would let him be the handler. But he felt it was something the area truly needed.

“I saw a need for it. I always wanted to be a handler,” he said. “When I was younger, I wanted to work in law enforcement with a K-9, but I became a firefighter.”

The district not only agreed to buy the dog for $375, but also agreed to let Doerfler be her handler and train with her.

They are training with Leslie Sprietzer, who owns Pawsdog Illinois, a company that trains service dogs as well as searchand-rescue dogs.

Morris High School and Saratoga to share librarian

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School and Saratoga School will be sharing a school librarian.

The MCHS District 101 board approved 6-0 on Monday an agreement between Saratoga School District 60C for shared librarian services.

The agreement will save District 101 $15,000 to $20,000 a year to start, and be of no extra cost to 60C, District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said Tuesday.

“We’re excited about it,” Halloran said. “We want to provide the best services possible with economic responsibility.”

Kelly Simpson works in the library at Saratoga, but is continuing her education to gain librarian certification.

The districts each will pay $125 a semester hour for satisfactory completion of course-

work toward the librarian certification program, as stated in the Saratoga Education Association contract.

This shared librarian idea was brought about by Morris High School’s Media Services Department Director Gail Janz’s retirement two years ago. Janz works up to 100 days at Morris High School, according to the district’s agreement with the teachers’ union, Halloran said.

Janz is scheduled to work 85 days in the 2015-16 school year, and library and media aides Tiffany Morrison and Julie Erickson will continue to handle day-to-day duties of the department.

Halloran said Morrison is the main person in the school’s media center, but is not a certified teacher.

“Tiffany Morrison will continue to learn from Gail Janz and expand her role,” Halloran said.

During the 2015-16 school

year, Simpson will work at Saratoga for 7.5 hours a day as stated in the Saratoga Employment Agreement. Halloran said Simpson may spend parts of four days a week at the high school.

Upon successful completion of the librarian certification program, District 101 and District 60C will share the compensation package offered to Simpson beginning January 2017.

by District 60C, which will

send an invoice to District 101 for 40 percent of the compensation package offered to Simpson.

District 101 agrees Simpson will remain a 60C employee for the duration of the agreement, and the performance responsibilities of Simpson will be determined by the superintendents of both districts.

The agreement takes effect for the 2015-16 fiscal year and will continue for five years.

The terms of the agreement will be reviewed and evaluat-

ed at the close of each fiscal year. The agreement may be extended and/or amended by agreement of both districts for future fiscal years.

“We see it as a long-term solution as long as needs are met,” Halloran said.

The board also approved a 2.5 percent raise for Assistant Principal Jeff Johnson, which matches the increases for Halloran and Principal Kelly Hussey.

MORRIS – The 14th installment of Morris Cruise Nights begins at 6 p.m. Saturday with the revving of engines in some car models close to 100 years old.

Founder Herb Wyeth said the weather forecast looks good for Saturday and if it holds true, he’s expecting between 800 to 900 vehicles.

“It’s a great, free, family event for spectators and it costs cars $10 to participate,” Wyeth said.

Wyeth said there’s so many cruise nights across the country, he probably didn’t think it would ever be this popular – but he had wished it would.

“We have a great venue in it being downtown Morris, and we keep money in the community,” Wyeth said.

Proceeds from cruise nights benefit local charity organizations.

Wyeth said local organizations were able to do a lot of neat things with proceeds from last year’s Morris Cruise Nights.

The first beneficiary this year to receive proceeds from Saturday’s event will be the Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice.

The hospice, a United Way of Grundy County partner, will have a food stand at the event and benefit from the sale of 50/50 raffle tickets, which it has been selling since April, Executive Director Joan Sereno said.

The raffle tickets can be purchased from board members and at the hospice office, 518 W. Illinois Ave., Morris.

Sereno is excited about the event.

“I get to pick the car of the evening,” Sereno said. “I’m old, so I pick old cars. I like the 1920s and 1930s cars. They’re fascinating.”

The organization provides physical, social, emotional and spiritual support for terminally ill patients and their families.

It also allows borrowing of a wide variety of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes, shower chairs, and various patient care items.

Morris police remind drivers of summer traffic safety tips MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – With the number of drivers on the road increasing during the summer, the chance of being involved in a traffic accident also increases.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite is encouraging drivers to slow down and make sure they are paying attention when behind the wheel, according to a news release. Drivers need to be patient and remain aware of traffic ahead, behind and next to their vehicle at all times.

“Recently, we have seen an increase in both rear-end collisions and collisions involving vehicles turning in front of oncoming vehicles,” Dite said in a news release.

Vincent Bugliosi, Manson trial prosecutor, dies at 80 Businessman

By LINDA DEUTSCH and ANDREW DALTON The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Vincent Bugliosi was an anonymous junior member of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office when he was handed the case that, for better or worse, would define his life: the prosecution of one of America’s most notorious mass murderers, Charles Manson.

During a closely watched and oftentimes bizarre trial that lasted nearly a year, the cool, relentless prosecutor became nearly as famous Manson himself as he denounced the ersatz hippie cult leader as the “dictatorial maharajah of a tribe of bootlicking slaves.”

He called Manson’s three murderous disciples, who were on trial with him, “robots” and “zombies.” He told jurors they eagerly killed actress Sharon Tate and seven others during a bloody, twonight rampage that terrified Los Angeles in the summer of 1969.

After all were convicted, Bugliosi would go on to recount the case in “Helter Skelter,” one of the best-selling true-crime novels of all time.

He would write 11 more books after that, but Bugliosi, who died Saturday at age 80, would always be best remembered as the man who put Manson and his followers away. He reflected on the reasons for that in an interview 40 years after the slayings: “These murders were probably the most bizarre in the recorded annals of American crime,” he said. “Evil has its lure and Manson has become a metaphor for evil.”

Bugliosi was a young, ambitious deputy district attorney on Aug. 9, 1969, when the bodies of Tate, the beautiful actress and wife of director Roman Polanski, and four others were discovered butchered at a hillside estate. After stabbing most of the victims repeatedly, the assailants had left behind bloody scrawlings on the door of Tate’s elegant home.

Those victims included members of Hollywood’s glitterati: celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, Polish film director Voityck Frykowksi and Tate, who was 8½-months pregnant. Also killed was Steven Parent, a friend of the estate’s caretaker.

A night later, two more mutilated bodies were found across town in another upscale neighborhood. The crime scene was marked with the same bloody scrawlings of words including, “Pigs,” ‘’Rise” and “Helter Skelter.”

The victims were grocers Rosemary and Leno LaBianca, who had no connection to Tate and her glamorous friends.

When members of the rag tag Manson Family were caught and charged with the crimes months later, a more veteran prosecutor, Aaron Stovitz, was assigned to head the prosecutorial team.

After Stovitz made an offhand remark to reporters mocking one of the defendants

he was removed and Bugliosi took over. He quickly became all but obsessed with the case.

“He was a really intense, very focused prosecutor and he worked very hard,” said retired district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons, who covered the trial as a reporter.

She and others noted Bugliosi even put a cot in his office so he could sleep there as the case unfolded.

He set the tone for the trial in his opening statement and revisited it in his closing argument, denouncing Manson as a murderous cult leader with a band of female followers willing to do anything for him, including kill. Others on trial were Manson followers Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten.

Bugliosi proposed the theory that Manson ordered the others to kill when he misinterpreted the Beatles song “Helter Skelter” as predicting a race war that he and his followers would foment.

Determined to show the breadth of the so-called Manson Family’s reach, Bugliosi called 84 witnesses, most of them a parade of disaffected young people who at one point or another fell under the cult leader’s sway.

The trial lasted 91⁄2 months, cost taxpayers $1 million and became an exploration of the Manson cult and its followers’ drug- and sex-fueled adoration of their leader.

The trial went on for so long that a defense lawyer disappeared and was found dead in the woods, something that led to retrials for Van Houten, who was convicted again. Bugliosi maintained foul play was involved, but that was never proved.

PICHER, Okla. – A wellknown Oklahoma businessman who refused to leave his beloved ghost town devastated by pollution and a tornado has died.

The Thomas Funeral Home confirmed Gary Linderman’s death. According to an obituary on its website, he died Saturday at age 60 at his home in nearby Welch after a sudden illness.

Linderman ran the Ole Miner Pharmacy, the last business in Picher. He was known as the “last man standing” or “Lights out Linderman.”

Customers from miles away visited the pharmacy in the once-booming lead- and zinc-mining town about 20 miles southwest of Joplin, Missouri. Most residents left after the Environmental Protection Agency declared Picher a federal Superfund site in the 1980s. A 2008 tornado devastated those who remained. The town ceased municipal operations in 2009.

Friend Sherry Mills told The Miami News-Record newspaper that Linderman loved to talk about Picher. He wasn’t born in Picher but embraced the town and its residents, telling friends he was still hopeful the town could be rebuilt one day. He became an unofficial spokesman of sorts for the city, appearing in local and national media. Linderman and his staff of three often delivered medications to customers in rural areas of nearby Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri.

I am talking about the kind of rub that generally is used for chicken wings or pork ribs. The unexpected combination of sweet and hot spices

rich with a touch of cumin and garlic – as well as three kinds of sugar – is perfect for lamb chops. It’s also great for Father’s Day. It’s a quick lamb rib fix everyone will love.

Just note that I go heavy on the rub in this recipe. This isn’t a time to season lightly.

Dads like flavors big and bold, and this rub delivers. But don’t fear the rub. The sugars mellow out the heat and make a natural glaze for the lamb when you grill them quickly on both sides.

The hardest thing about grilling lamb chops is buying them. Because once you get them home, the rest is easy.

My favorite style of chops resembles lamb lollipops – a long, slender bone with a fat nugget of sweet and tender meat at the end. And they are just begging to be grilled.

Most meat counters stock lamb loin chops, which are tasty, but the bone to meat ratio is too high for my liking.

Instead, I purchase racks of lamb, preferably from New Zealand or Australia, and cut my own chops from the racks. Each rack will have 7 to 8 bones, and most racks are packaged “Frenched.” It’s a fancy term that means that the rib bones are cleaned and exposed. If your rack is not Frenched, most butchers will do it for you.

Buying a whole rack and cutting them into chops just

before grilling ensures the meat is fresh, pink and pristine. Plus, this lets me choose to cut them in double-bone or single-bone portions.

If I am serving the lamb as the main course, I generally cut one rack into four double-bone portions. If I am serving them with cocktails or at a more formal affair, I cut them into single bones and they become easy-to-eat finger food.

2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 tablespoon ancho chili powder 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dry mustard Heat the grill to medium. Be certain the grill grates are very clean.

Use paper towels to pat dry the racks of lamb.

One at a time, place each rack on a cutting board and cut through at every bone to create chops, using the bones as a guide. From each rack, you will get 7 to 8 thin chops with 1 bone each, about 2⁄3-inch thick. Brush each chop all over with olive oil.

To make the rub, in a small bowl, mix together all 3 sugars, the salt, both chili powders, the cumin, cayenne, garlic powder and mustard.

Place the rub on a dinner plate and drag each chop through it to coat on all sides. Pat the rub into the meat so that it sticks.

When the grill is ready, arrange the chops on the grates and cook, with the grill covered, for 2 to 3 minutes per side for medium rare.

Cook longer if you prefer your meat more done.

Remove the chops from the grill and place on a clean platter. Let the chops rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with lots of paper towels and let people eat with their hands.

OPINION ‘Ghost payrolling’ not a good idea SPRINGFIELD – Way back, in 1973, then-Gov. Dan Walker hired a young Georgetown University graduate and others for his staff but paid them with money from state agencies rather than from the governor’s office.

The practice ruffled some feathers, as well it should.

Folks in Springfield started calling them “ghost payrollers.” After all, it appeared Walker was trying to make it look like he was spending less money to run his office than he really was. Despite the outcry, the practice continued and not just for the four years Walker was governor.

Both Republican and Democratic governors have emulated Walker’s method of artificially deflating their budgets by pushing off some of their expenses on state agencies.

While it is perfectly legal, it’s a lousy practice. Government needs to be transparent about how it spends money.

And this practice isn’t the least bit transparent.

It wasn’t a good idea when Walker did it. It wasn’t a good idea when Rod Blagojevich did it. It wasn’t a good idea when Pat Quinn did it.

And it most certainly isn’t a good idea now that Gov. Bruce Rauner is doing it.

House Democrats vented mock outrage June 4 about Beth Purvis, who is Gov. Bruce Rauner’s top education adviser. She earns $250,000 and is paid from the Department of Human Services, which is the state’s top welfare agency.

That is an awful lot of money.

Considering that at least 20 local school superintendents across Illinois are earning more than Purvis, it doesn’t seem particularly out of line for what the top education policy adviser to the governor

But some Democratic lawmakers have found religion when it comes to the evils of ghost payrolling – at least when a Republican governor is doing it. It’s odd we never heard a peep from them when Pat Quinn had at least five of his staffers drawing salaries from the Department of Human Services.

The cost to the taxpayers is exactly the same whether the money is drawn from a fund for the governor’s office or some executive agency.

The reason this is a bad practice is that government needs to be transparent. And it’s hard to know just how much taxpayer money is being spent to operate the governor’s office when money is siphoned from various agencies.

Purvis is a victim.

But not a victim of sexism as some Republicans claim.

She is a casualty of the ongoing war between House Speaker Michael Madigan and Rauner. She got caught in the crossfire.

But she should recover from her political wounds.

After all, other “ghost payrollers” have.

Look no further than that young Georgetown graduate, Gov. Walker hired. His name?

Patrick J. Quinn, the 41st governor of Illinois.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Someone needs to stand up to Rauner’s bullying, use of threats

To the Editor: Gov. Bruce Rauner is correct when he says he was elected to help fix the state’s financial mess. So, it is somewhat bizarre that rather than address the state’s financial problems, he spends his time threatening to inflict harm on middle-class families, people who have done nothing to cause the state’s fiscal situation.

The governor refuses to discuss the state’s multibillion dollar budget crisis until legislators adopt his unfair and unpopular “agenda,” a major component of which calls for silencing the voice of teachers and other public education employees who advocate for high-quality teaching and learning conditions in our schools.

It is a proven bad plan; local governments statewide have debated and rejected it while,

in the General Assembly, his agenda failed to receive a single “yes” vote.

Rauner promised to lead like a pragmatic CEO, but he acts like a dogmatic politician in denial about his agenda. In an effort to bend legislators to his will, he threatens to cut vital programs for our students, slash funding for higher education and gut critical services for working families and the elderly.

Using threats to force a radical agenda on middle-class families, with no regard for the consequences, is the opposite of leadership and totally unacceptable.

We urge all legislators to stand with the working families of Illinois and reject the governor’s out-of-touch bullying campaign.

Plenty of action ahead With the calendar turning to June, I’ve had a lot of people ask me what I am going to do with myself during the summer. While it’s true that there aren’t nearly as many high school events to cover, that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do.

For starters, the youth baseball and softball seasons are in full swing and there are games every night. To that end, I would like to encourage coaches to email their results to sports@morrisdailyherald. com. Please be sure to include your team’s name, opposing team’s name, age group or division (Bronco, Mustang, etc.), game highlights, including winning or losing pitcher, leading hitters and/or defensive standouts. Please also include players’ first and last names.

In the past, the coaches would agree before the game that one coach or another would be the one responsible for reporting the results from that game. That’s fine with me, but I would ask the coach of the reporting team to also include first and last names of players on the opposing team.

I can’t tell you how many times I have gotten a report that says “Johnson had 4 hits for Opposing Team.” Bill Johnson? Debbie Johnson? Simple rule. No first and last name, no mention in the paper. I will try to get to as many games as I can, and bring my trusty freelance photographer Craig Lincoln with me as often as his

• Later this month, June 24 and 25, a Morris summer institution marks a milestone, as the 30th annual Morris Shootout takes place at Morris Community High School. A total of 32 teams will descend on Morris for the two-day affair, with pool play on the first day and bracket play on the second. I will preview it in more detail as the date draws closer, but for now, here’s a list of the teams scheduled to appear: Alton, Belleville West, Bloomington Central Catholic, Bolingbrook, Bradley-Bourbonnais, Burlington Central, Coal City, Deerfield, Dixon, East Aurora, Edwardsville, Galesburg, Granite City, Joliet West, Kankakee, Lake Zurich, Loyola Academy, Marion, Minooka, Morris, Neuqua Valley, Normal Community, Oak Forest, O’Fallon, Oswego, Ottawa, Plainfield Central, Plainfield North, Rockford Auburn, Springfield, Stevenson and Sycamore.

• For those wanting to see local products playing baseball for a living, there are a few

sprinkled around. One is in our backyard, as Minooka’s Jake Butler is currently pitching for the Joliet Slammers.

Butler was drafted in the 29th round by the Detroit Tigers last summer after setting school records for wins and strikeouts at University of St. Francis. Injuries hampered his Rookie League season last year, and he hooked up with the Slammers for the summer.

Another Minooka grad, Mike Foltynewicz, is in the starting rotation for the Atlanta Braves and more than holding his own. He is currently 3-2 with a 4.29 ERA and has struck out 43 batters in 42 innings while walking 15. In Memphis, Morris grad Zach Petrick is pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A team. He’s 4-3 with a 3.48 ERA and has struck out 48 and walked 10 in 68 2/3 innings. Minooka’s Tony Bucciferro started the year in Double-A in the White Sox’s system and has since moved down to high-A. Between the two leagues, he is currently 1-5 with a 6.10 ERA. • Don’t forget that every Friday night features stockcar racing action at the Grundy County Speedway. The STARS series also runs at Grundy on selected Saturdays during the summer.

Before you know it, the summer will be over. Enjoy it while it lasts.

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks’ first power play of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final was a thing of beauty – a well-conceived attack perfectly executed by world-class players with precision passing that created time, space and opportunity.

It was only a matter of time before it paid off. And sure enough, Brad Richards scored on a shot from the point with Andrew Shaw in front of Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop to tied the game at 1 with 5:38 left in the first period.

You almost literally couldn’t draw it up any better. It was their best sustained power play of the playoffs and one of their best of the season.

But the Hawks’ second power play was an entirely different story. It was almost as poorly executed as the first one was well executed. With Nikita Kucherov in the penalty box for tripping, the Hawks couldn’t have frittered away an opportunity more weakly than they did.

The pinpoint passing, the precision and execution that marked the first power play was gone. The Hawks couldn’t control the puck, let alone set up a threatening opportunity

with the man advantage. The only shot attempt – by Duncan Keith – was blocked by Lightning defensemen Victor Hedman. A pass from in deep back out to Brent Seabrook at the blue line skipped over Seabrook’s stick and over the blue line.

The Hawks had to start over, but never really got started in the first place. With less than 10 seconds left in the penalty, they passed once, twice, three times and never even got a shot off as Kucherov stormed back onto the ice to break up the last remnant of the power play. Moments later, Kucherov himself was sprung for a breakaway, only to be stopped by Hawks goalie Corey Crawford.

It was that kind of night for the Hawks in Game 3. They outshot the Lightning 19-7 in the first period – including 16-0 at one point following Ryan Callahan’s goal that gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead. But they could only gain a 1-1 tie on Richards’ power-play goal, and after that, their once-potent attack withered.

For a team that insists it knows what it’s up against, the Hawks struggled to respond to the threat of the Lightning.

Against a goaltender clearly struggling with an injury, they applied enough heat to take a

3-1 or 4-1 lead, but lost momentum in the second period.

They were out of sync. At least twice they had potential prime scoring opportunities negated by offsides infractions. Just before Callahan scored, Patrick Sharp and Antoine Vermette misconnected on a rush. Pucks were jumping over sticks and passes missing their targets.

And even when Brandon Saad scored to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead at the 4:14 mark of the third period, it took the Lightning only 13 seconds to respond, with Ondrej Palat stuffing home a loose puck in front of the net past Crawford to tie the game at 2.

The Hawks have met their match, which is no surprise and hardly a death knell for their hopes of winning at third Stanley Cup in six years.

They’ve responded to similar threats many times before.

But the Lightning might be the closest thing to themselves that they’ve faced since the Hawks won their first championship in 2010. Hedman’s magnificent stretch pass to Callahan for the opening goal – executed as well as Duncan Keith ever has – was a calling card.

It’s up to the Hawks to turn it up a notch – and sooner rather than later.

Has Bickell bounced back from injuries?

There were no obvious triggers, no clear-cut cause. He even passed his concussion tests.

“The day before Game 7 in Anaheim, I was just like, ‘What’s going on? What’s going on?’ ” Bickell said. “I thought

maybe the travel. I was talking to a couple of guys and they were saying, ‘Yeah, I feel the same.’ Then come game time, I was like – I couldn’t go.”

It wasn’t a concussion. It wasn’t a migraine. It was vertigo, a condition that can cause dizziness, headaches and nausea. And it kept Bickell on the bench for the second and third periods of Game 7 in Anaheim, and off the ice for the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final – “tough playing when you’re dizzy,” he said.

But he said Monday morn-

ing that the vertigo has passed, and he was back in the lineup for Game 3 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the United Center.

With Kane also struggling – he was held completely off the scoresheet in the first two games, and didn’t even register a shot on goal in Game 2 – Bickell was hopeful that he could help his linemate get over the hump.

“Been through a lot of injuries in my career, but never been through anything like that,” he said.

In bridge, though, if you remember, you will often end up smiling; if you forget, you will surely be sad.

In today’s deal, look only at the West hand. East opens one club, South overcalls four spades, and after two passes, East doubles to show a very strong hand that is presumably short in spades. After West decides to pass (do you agree?), what should he lead?

East might open two clubs, but three-suiters need bidding space, which would be at a premium after a two clubs-two diamonds-three clubs start to the sequence.

South made a sensible four-spade overcall. This would typically have required an eight-card suit, but with two singletons, it was a good idea to consume as much bidding space as possible. Make life as difficult for responder as you can.

Over East’s balancing double, West had a tough call. His balanced hand suggested defense, but his useful minor-suit honors hinted at offense. (In this layout, six clubs fails if South leads a spade.) I think most experts would have passed.

When the opponents sacrifice, especially at a high level, it is (almost always) right to lead a trump.

In this carefully constructed deal, if everyone is playing double-dummy (knowing where all 52 cards lie), that is the only lead to defeat four spades. South can be held to seven spades and two club ruffs in the dummy. ******

Seniors avoid taking meds for a variety of reasons Dear Doctor K: My mother is supposed to take several medications each day, but she doesn’t take them consistently. What can I do to get her back on track?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet when you were a kid and your parents were hounding you about taking your medicine, you never imagined a day would come when you’d be doing the same to them.

Nearly three out of four Americans report that they do not always take their medication as directed.

So there are a lot of people who are in the same position as your mother. And, obviously, for the medicines to work, a person’s got to take them.

I don’t know your moth-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff er, so I don’t know why she isn’t taking her medications as she should. But I can tell you about some reasons my patients have shared with me for not taking theirs.

One of the biggest issues is cost. People are often prescribed a brand-name drug that they can’t afford. If cost is an issue for your mother, she should talk to her doctor or pharmacist. A generic alternative may be just as effective.

If your mother is on Medicare and hasn’t enrolled in

the Medicare drug program (called Part D), suggest that she check into that. It may be able to cover a big fraction of her drug costs for relatively little money (compared to the cost of the drugs).

Another reason people don’t take their medicines as directed is the fact that many older people are on multiple medicines. It can be hard to keep track of what to take, and when. Many people simply forget. If you think that may be a problem, suggest strategies to help your mother stay on schedule. For example, she can use a seven-day pillbox; set alarms on her watch, phone or clock; or make a chart that shows when to take which medicine.

If your mom uses a computer or smartphone, a medication management app could help. These apps organize pill information and remind you when to take them. There also are automatic pill dispensers that pop out the right pills at the right times.

Many pharmacies offer programs to call and remind you to get a prescription refilled. Other programs estimate when you’ll finish a medication and automatically refill the prescription, then remind you to pick it up.

Maybe side effects are a problem. If so, encourage your mother to talk to her doctor.

The doctor may be able to switch the medication or adjust the dose to eliminate the

side effects, or at least make them more manageable.

Finally, I’ve found that my patients are more likely to take their medications if they understand why they need them.

When a doctor hands you a prescription, he or she should make sure you understand what it’s for and what will happen to you if you don’t take it.

Your mother should not hesitate to ask for this information -- even if she has been taking a particular drug for years.

WHEREAS, the Village of Carbon Hill, Grundy County, Illinois (the “Village”), operates its municipally-owned waterworks and sewerage system (the “System”) in accordance with the provisions of Division 139 of Article 11 of the Illinois Municipal Code, as supplemented and amended (the ”Act”), and in particular as supplemented by the Local Government Debt Reform Act, as amended; and WHEREAS, the President and Board of Trustees of the Village (the “Corporate Authorities”) have determined that it is advisable, necessary and in the best interests of public health, safety and welfare to construct a sanitary sewer collection system and wastewater treatment plant, together with the acquisition of all land or rights in land and all mechanical, electrical and other services necessary, useful or advisable to the construction program, and, incidental to such construction, to pay legal, financing, and administrative expense (all of which said construction, services, and incidental expenses may be referred to as the “Project”), all in accordance with the plans and specifications therefor prepared by consulting engineers to the Village; and WHEREAS, the estimated costs of the Project are not less than $2,693,500 and there are insufficient funds on hand and lawfully available to pay such costs; and WHEREAS, such costs are expected to be paid for from the proceeds of bonds payable from the revenues of the System in an anticipated amount of $1,500,000 (the “Water and Sewer Revenue Bonds”) and proceeds of a grant from USDA Rural Development in an anticipated amount of $1,193,500; and WHEREAS, pursuant to and in accordance with the provisions of the Act, the Village is authorized to borrow funds and may issue the Water and Sewer Revenue Bonds in the aggregate principal amount of not to exceed $1,500,000 in evidence thereof for the purpose of providing funds to pay the costs of the Project: NOW THEREFORE Be It Ordained by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Carbon Hill, Grundy County, Illinois, as follows: Section 1. Section 3. Publication. If no petition meeting the requirements of the Act and other applicable law is filed during the petition period hereinabove referred to, then the Corporate Authorities may adopt additional ordinances or proceedings supplementing or amending this Ordinance providing for the issuance and sale of the Water and Sewer Revenue Bonds, prescribing all the details of the Water and Sewer Revenue Bonds and providing for the collection, segregation and distribution of the revenues of the System, so long as the maximum amount of the Water and Sewer Revenue Bonds as set forth in this Ordinance is not exceeded and there is no material change in the Project or purposes described herein. Such additional ordinances or proceedings shall in all instances become effective in accordance with the Act and other applicable law. This Ordinance, together with such additional ordinances or proceedings, shall constitute complete authority for the issuance of the Water and Sewer Revenue Bonds under applicable law.

Section 5. Severability. If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provision shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

Section 6. Repealer. All ordinances, resolutions or orders, or parts thereof, in conflict with the provisions of this Ordinance are to the extent of such conflict hereby repealed.
