By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Nancy Musial of Morris sat in the shade of a tree Thursday on the lawn of the Grundy County Courthouse, raising her hands to the sky as she sang along with Tammy and Avery Baetzel at the annual National Day of Prayer event.

“We need God so bad in this country,” she said. “We need to turn around back to him.”

According to nationaldayofprayer.org, the National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States. The Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 set aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and in 1988 that law was amended, making the first Thursday of May the National Day of Prayer.

Pastor Rich Giovannetti, coordinator of the Grundy County event and pastor with Standing in the Word Ministries in Morris, said America was founded on the principal of prayer, and the future of America’s success is dependent on the consistent word of prayer.

“The future of America depends on the God-fearing and God-hungry people,” he said.

Grainger still undecided on location

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Board’s Economic Development & Tax Committee on Wednesday took the next step needed to welcome a potential second building by W.W. Grainger Inc. in Minooka.

The committee approved and will send to the full County Board for consideration next week a resolution to allow Chairman David Welter to execute the Economic Development Project Area 1 Rebate Agreement for Grainger.

“We’ve not heard from Grainger if they’ve made a decision at this point,” Nancy Ammer, CEO with the Grundy Economic Development Council, said Thursday. “The resolution passed last night is the second part of a two-step

process required by the county to offer the rebate.”

Grainger seeks a four-year, 50 percent tax rebate incentive for the proposed 1 millionsquare-foot expansion. The full board approved the rebate at the April regular meeting.

The property, which Grainger owns, is located within a Grundy County Economic Development Project Area boundary on 52 acres Grainger purchased from Liberty Property Trust next to the current facility on Minooka Road.

The rebate acts as an incentive to encourage companies to build within Grundy County.

The rebate helps lessen the impact of the county’s machinery and equipment tax, which taxes machinery as real property.

The state’s other 101 counties classify machinery as personal property, which is not

said. “It makes sense to offer them the rebate.”

If the County Board approves the resolution at Tuesday’s regular board meeting, Welter can sign documents needed for the rebate if Grainger decides to build in Minooka again.

Grainger is considering the Minooka location and a South Carolina location for its expansion.

The new building will be between 1 million to 1.3 million square feet and will add at least 130 local employees.

The project has a proposed capital investment of $50 million, and has a targeted commencement date of 2016, with completion and operational targeted for 2018.

The K-9 unit, in collaboration with Morris police, Dwight police, LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies, Grundy County sheriff’s deputies, fire protection agencies from MABAS 15 and 25, Will County Search and Rescue, Illinois State Police and others combined leads to find on the land evidence of area burglary and murders.

In order for numerous law enforcement agencies in the state to collaborate to solve a multi-jurisdictional crime, the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System was formed.

ILEAS implements planning, training, equipment purchasing and distribution for local law enforcement in significant events where manpower and resources are insufficient.

“The goal is to make one call and have all the resources at your disposal,” Dwight Police

Chief Tim Henson said.

In this particular case, authorities were scouring the acreage to close a case involving the June 14 shooting deaths of Donna J. Denker, 60, and her daughter Kelli L. Denker, 30 at their Dwight home.

In October, authorities closed the case as they named Joseph Sipple, 27, once a Morris resident, as the killer. Sipple was a past acquaintance of Kelli Denker. Police identified Sipple in August as having used the same gun to kill himself that was used to shoot the Denkers. Sipple shot himself June 26 as LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies arrived to arrest Sipple at his girlfriend’s residence near Sheridan after linking him to stolen property.

The K-9 unit was used to make sure the area was safe, because through interviews, Dite said authorities concluded Sipple would likely have weapons and possible explosives on the 30 acres in Sheridan. Dite said authorities were lucky the K-9 unit did more than ensure safety.

Morris police wanted to uncover stolen goods in the search, as Sipple was a suspect

in several burglaries in Morris after pawning off jewelry in Springfield.

At the end of day one of the search, the K-9 was getting tired, Dite said, but he was showing interest in a particular area. When authorities began the second day’s search, they focused on that same area.

Rezin co-sponsors ‘return to learn’ bill MORRIS HERALD–NEWS SPRINGFIELD – With firsthand experience of the increasing speed of youth sports, state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, is working to help young people who suffer concussions.

Rezin is co-sponsoring Senate Bill 7, also known as the “return to learn” bill, a bipartisan piece of legislation spearheaded by Sen. Kwame Raoul, D-Chicago, to require schools to develop policies and procedures to help young athletes and non-athletes who suffered a concussion return to the classroom. Doctors would have to clear a student before he or she could return to the classroom or participate in athlet-

ics. The legislation would also require school districts, based on their resources, to create a concussion oversight team consisting of coaches, trainers, and medical professionals and requires schools to create an emergency action plan in the case of a serious injury.

“My son Zach has had three concussions in his young life, all happening on the football field,” Rezin said in the release. “We need to address how our kids can successfully return to the classroom after a concussion because I saw it firsthand with Zach, how challenging it was for him to focus and absorb information.”

Born: Feb. 21, 1935; in Hays, KS Died: May 3, 2015; in Morris, IL Valeria M. Ader, age 80, of Morris, passed away Sunday evening, May 3, 2015, at home with her family by her side.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 11, 2015, at 10:30

a.m., at the Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris, with Rev. Edward J. Howe, CR officiating.

Inurnment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Born February 21, 1935, in Hays, Kansas, she was the daughter of Michael and Anna (Weaver)Augustine. She graduated from Hays High School. She married Oran Ader, on November 24, 1954. For most of their married life, they lived in Morris.

Survivors include her children,

Nancy (Larry) Kuder, Tom (Sue) Ader, David Ader and Charles Ader all of Morris; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter; two brothers, Gus Augustine of Hays, Kansas and Kenny Augustine of Grove, Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Oran in 1993; one son, Michael in 2003; one grandson; one great grandson; nine brothers and sisters.

Jim Wright early casualty of rising U.S. House partisanship

DANIEL and DAVID WARREN The Associated Press DALLAS – As a member of what he called “the people’s house” for more than a generation, Texas Democrat Jim Wright was known for his rich oratorical skills in the U.S. House. He never relied on them more than the day in 1989, when he told those who had elected him speaker about two years earlier that he was prepared to resign after being accused of violating ethics rules dozens of times.

The congressman had been fighting such allegations for months, the controversy beginning in his second year as speaker and stretching into his third with no end in sight.

At stake was the ignominy of becoming the first speaker in history to be driven out of office in midterm.

At first Wright cited the support he enjoyed in his Fort Worth-area district and his love for the institution in which he had served for 34 years. He offered only a meager defense of his actions, quickly turning to questioning his accusers’ motives and decrying what he called “this manic idea of a frenzy of feeding on other people’s reputation.”

His voice broke at times and tears appeared during his speech: “It is grievously hurtful to our society when vilification becomes an accepted form of political debate, when negative campaigning becomes a full-time occupation, when members of each party become self-appointed vigilantes car-

In the end, Wright offered to resign to spare the House what he called “distractions” and asked that both sides resolve to “bring this period of mindless cannibalism to an end.”

He was out of office in a week, an early casualty of the rising partisanship within the House and the personal attacks between House members that would mark the chamber for the last quarter-century.

Critics would say Wright himself had helped fuel the ill will between the parties by generally ignoring Republicans as he and other Democrats tended to House business.

Wright – who died early Wednesday in Fort Worth at

age 92 – was first elected to the House in 1954. He was the Democratic majority leader for a decade, rising to the speakership in January 1987, to replace Tip O’Neill. Three House speakers had resigned in the nation’s history before Wright stepped down. But they served during the 19th century, and none before Wright had been under fire and facing judgment in the House for breaking its ethics rules.

The House Ethics Committee investigated Wright’s financial affairs at the prodding of a little-known Georgia congressman, Republican Newt Gingrich, who publicly branded Wright a “crook.”

In his long House career, Wright authored major legislation in several fields, but he was most proud of his efforts on behalf of a “pay-as-we-go” interstate highway system and water conservation.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Ladies Auxiliary to VFW John Martin Steele Post 6049.

She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Church or American Diabetes Association.

Sir Maurice Flanagan dies

By ADAM SCHRECK The Associated Press DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Sir Maurice Flanagan, a British aviation executive who helped get Emirates airline off the ground and guided its breakneck growth for nearly three decades, has died. He was 86.

The carrier’s parent company, Emirates Group, announced Flanagan’s death Thursday, just hours after it reported an annual profit of $1.5 billion. It said he died at his home in London, surrounded by friends and loved ones. It did not provide a cause of death.

“The Emirates Group, and Dubai, has lost a great friend today. Maurice was a man of great character, and a legend in the aviation industry,” Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates’ chairman and CEO, said. “He was generous with

his time, forthright in his views, and a person who gave 110 percent to everything he did. It was a great personal pleasure and privilege to have worked with him.”

Born on Nov. 17, 1928 in Leigh, England, Flanagan spent years working for British Airways before taking a post in 1978 as director and general manager of Dnata, the ground services company at Dubai’s airport.

He was tapped in 1985 to lead a 10-man team charged with launching the new airline and became Emirates’ first managing director.

The fledgling carrier started with just two planes on Oct. 25 that year, according to Emirates’ official history.

Today, it operates more than 230 planes, including the world’s biggest fleet of both the Boeing 777 and double-decker Airbus A380.

Its parent reported sales of more than $26 billion last fiscal year. Queen Elizabeth II knighted Flanagan in 2010, citing his services to Britain’s aviation industry and British exports. He retired as executive vice chairman of Emirates Group in 2013.

Flanagan is survived by his wife, Audrey, son Julian, and his daughters Siobhan and Claire.

Morris pitchers give ‘Bernie’ a win

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Ryan Bernickus threw out the first pitch before Morris’ 4-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover win Thursday over Sterling.

That may not sound like much, but considering Bernickus has undergone chemotherapy for the last year for osteosarcoma and had his last dose of chemo a month ago, it was a big deal.

Thursday was “Bernie Day” at the Morris Community High School diamond, as the Redskin players, coaches and parents sold T-shirts, hats and ribbons to raise funds to help the Bernickus family.

“It was nice to see the guys win,” Bernickus said after the game. “That was a lot of pressure on those guys to win today.”

“We do need to produce more offensively, because the competition gets pretty strong the rest of the way. We have to find ways to score, and the kids need to share that attitude with the coaching staff.”

Sterling scratched a run across in the top of the sixth off of Akre, but he left a runner stranded on second when he struck out the final two batters. Cheshareck came on for the seventh, using a steady diet of fastballs to dispose of the first two hitters. He struck out the third as well, but that batter reached on a dropped third strike. Fishing for spawners is up to you I can’t believe as I sit down to type this the air temperature is hovering around 83 degrees.The last few days have warmed the water temperatures to the point where every species of fish has got the spring spawning ritual on its radar.

Almost overnight, big fish can be seen swimming throughout the shallows and even in some cases, sitting on spawning beds. It quickens an angler’s pulse to troll down a shoreline and see one big, scaly, game fish after another.

Each year the same debate creeps to the surface when these behemoths come up from the depths to spawn.

The question?

Is it proper to fish for bedding fish?

Legally, in Illinois, yes it is.

There is no law that states you cannot try and catch a fish that is actively spawning. In some northern states, however, they

have a season on certain game fish. If you catch one of these regulated species, you need to return it to the water immediately until the open season starts. At that point, you may keep one if you wish as long as all size regulations are met.

The question that brews in many circles is whether or not you should ethically fish for spawning fish. Most people that I have had this very discussion with have all fished for a big fish that was spawning or protecting a bed at some point. I think probably most of us have.

So what’s the big deal then?

The debate rages when a fish that is actively protecting a nest is caught and either taken home to be eaten or thrown in a livewell and weighed at a tournament, and then later returned to the water. In both of these cases the bed is left unprotected and other predators have the opportunity to wipe

There are several stages to the spawning process. First, smaller fish, usually males, will start to seek out potential bedding sites. If they find one they like, then they begin to fan out the silt and debris to reach a firmer platform in which to hold the eggs. These beds are easy to see in clear water.

Once the site is selected, then the females, which are often the larger of the two, will move in to the nest to start the spawning process. Once the eggs are fertilized and set, the females tend to leave the protection duty to the males.

Once the eggs hatch, the males will even guard the fry for some time.

BULLS NOTES

Studies have shown that there are really no adverse effects to the fish population when a bedding fish is immediately released right back to the bed in which they were caught.

The great debate comes in when the fish is removed from the location.

A lot can be learned about bass behavior when fishing for spawners. Whether targeting bass or bluegills, the action can be intense and addicting.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid came from anchoring a boat and casting helpless worms into a massive array of bluegill beds. The ensuing frenzy kept us occupied for many spring afternoons.

I guess if I was asked to take a stance on the issue, I would side with those who fish for bedding fish, but also put them

back to finish the process.

Yes, I have been a tournament angler that succumbed to the pressure of catching spawners off the beds and throwing them in the “box” so I could weigh them in. But, I also know many tournament pros who search for fish in either the pre or post spawn stage. They have chiseled out nice careers by avoiding the issue altogether.

If you are fishing recreationally, have fun, take a kid and watch him marvel at the bedding fish. Just put them back. If you’re tournament fishing, that decision is yours alone to make. It’s neither right nor wrong, just a question worth asking.

First, there was a report that Noah – a die-hard Florida Gator alum – took note that Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones and several of his Buckeye teammates were introduced during Game 2 of

the eventual loss to the Cavaliers, and during a timeout Noah supposedly was spotted mouthing to Jones, “You ain’t in the SEC.’’ Jones took to Twitter later in the night and sent this to Noah’s Twitter account: “@ JoakimNoah watch yo mouth before I give you these hands chump’’ “I heard about it [Thursday] morning,’’ Noah said. “I didn’t know who [Jones] was until this morning. I wish him nothing but the best. I like

Then there was a video of Noah walking off the court after the game, and apparently getting spit on by a fan, before reaching out and making contact with the alleged spitter.

According to a Bulls spokesman, Noah did tell Cleveland security about the incident, but they didn’t offer up much of a response.

“I don’t want to talk about that,’’ Noah said. “It’s unnecessary.’’

Pope Francis’ notes on Preaching 101 It was another ordination rite in St. Peter’s Basilica and the pope was expected to stay close to the ritual book during the homily.

Then again, Pope Francis has a way of expanding the script. Off the cuff, he offered the new shepherds some blunt advice about preaching: Do not bore the sheep.

“Let this be the nourishment of the People of God, that your sermons are not boring, that your homilies reach people’s hearts because they come from your heart, because what you say to them is what you carry in your heart,” he said, in one translation of remarks on the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

But if priests share from their own experiences, added Francis, their actions must match their words, because “examples edify, but words without examples are empty words, they are just ideas that never reach the heart and, in fact, they can harm. They are no good!”

Pope Francis has, on a number of occasions, discussed how Catholic priests can become more effective communicators.

Before becoming pope, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was already concerned about the effectiveness of his priests – during an era in which charismatic evangelical preachers radically changed Latin America.

During another recent Vatican rite – marking the release of an official Homiletic Directory offering guidance for clergy – Archbishop Arthur Roche urged priests to grasp the importance of the sermon’s strategic location in the center of the Mass.

“Rather, it means that Jesus’ words and deeds are never, ever boring. So when we talk about the Gospels we need to convey the same urgency and excitement that the disciples felt when they were around Jesus.”

Reorganization should help history, tourism When new leaders take charge, things are bound to change. Supporters of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency are concerned about a change proposed by firstyear Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Rauner supports the abolition of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

At first glance, his proposal seems drastic.

Illinois has a remarkable history, after all, and the Historic Preservation Agency plays an important role in safeguarding that heritage.

Some people have gone so far as to call the proposal “devastating.” We’ve read the legislation, House Bill 574, and believe the alarmist talk is overblown.

It’s true the bill would abolish the Historic Preservation Agency. However, all the agency’s “powers, duties, functions, and responsibilities,” with one exception,

simply would be transferred to a new Historic Sites Division within the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The exception would be the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.

The bill would allow that state-owned facility to operate on its own, governed by a board of directors. The belief is the 10-year-old Lincoln library and museum could become more efficient in its mission “to promote tourism and educate Illinois residents on Lincoln’s legacy and impact.”

Back to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. If it is rolled into the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and becomes the Historic Sites Division, its duties would not be forgotten.

The state’s dozens of

historic sites, museums and monuments still would operate. People still would be able to conduct historical research. Efforts to preserve Illinois’ history still would be undertaken. Volunteers still would be solicited to assist at various historic sites.

Why the change, then? A new Historic Sites Division should benefit from better marketing and promotion within the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Those people are all about business, and tourism is important to businesses in Illinois.

History buffs fearful of the proposed changes should take a longer historical view.

With reorganization can come rejuvenation. We believe that would be good news for Illinois’ historic sites and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
