Video gaming business was hoping to be the second to come to Morris

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A second video gaming business tried to come to Morris, but city officials looking to limit the gambling access prevented it from obtaining a license.

Liquor licenses for video gaming businesses brought much debate during Monday’s Morris Judiciary and License Committee and City Council meetings.

In order for the state to grant a video-gaming license, a business must have a liquor license. Lili Mae’s was requesting a beer and wine only license from the city.

Alderman Don Hansen, chairman of the Judiciary and License Committee, made a motion recommending the City Council grant a Class E liquor license to Bonnie Ferrari, doing business as Lili Mae’s, a food and video gaming business at 1828 N. Division St.

But in the committee meeting, Hansen said he’d prefer to wait and see how the city’s first video gaming business, Hook’s Hideaway, progresses.

Hook’s Hideaway has a Class D license from the city, which allows for a full bar.

Hansen reluctantly motioned to make a recommendation to the City Council, which was seconded and passed on to council.

But the recommendation for the liquor license never left the council floor because it did not receive a second to Hansen’s council motion and therefore could not be voted on. Without the liquor license, Lili Mae’s can’t open in Morris.

Hansen said Wednesday he wants the business to be reassessed after one year.

He’d like to see how profitable Hook’s Hideaway becomes, and whether it’ll be disruptive to the community, noting that some municipalities are

Doug Hayse Morris alderman According to the Morris fiscal 2015-16 budget, the city collected revenue estimated at $158,166 in video gaming, pull tab tax and other, in the year ending April 30. In 2014, the city collected $85,774.

“How many will see success here and try to open one?” Alderman Doug Hayse said. “I think there are other ways to bring money to the city than off the backs of gamblers.”

However, with one video gaming business in Morris, the majority of video gaming revenue is from bars that received a license from the state to have video gaming machines.

“It should be capped at some point,” Hansen said Monday.

Paul Ferrari declined to give additional comment Wednesday.

“I was adamant that I was against another video gaming business opening up, but I wanted to give [Ferrari] a fair shake with the full City Council,” Hansen said. “I was surprised there was no second of the motion. I think we saw that council felt the same as I do.”

Paul and Bonnie Ferrari own Lili Mae’s Gambling Parlor in Dwight and Pontiac, and Paul Ferrari said during the meeting the Morris location would employ four or five Morris residents, and there would be security cameras.

Bonnie Ferrari told the committee the goal was to sell a small selection of beer and wine to clientele, which is not a typical bar crowd.

“It’s a lot of grandmas and grandpas,” Bonnie Ferrari said. “Our intention is to never have a bar. We do not want to be known as a bar.”

Morris City Attorney Scott Belt asked the Ferrari’s how much Lili Mae’s in Pontiac, a population of more than 11,000, brings to the city of Pontiac.

They said $600 to $700 a month.

“I was led to those countries more than the other routes.

My aunt and uncle are leaving for South Africa to be missionaries and my grandparents are missionaries in Uganda, so I wanted to go places I wouldn’t normally go, or where I don’t have family who I can visit,” Kreis said.

MINOOKA – While most high school seniors are thumbing through college acceptance letters trying to find the perfect school to catapult the next chapter of their lives, two local seniors are dusting off passports, getting immunizations, learning how to set up tents and fundraising for their next chapter – the mission field.

The mission field is full of unknowns, such as foreign food, disease, lodging, language barriers and safety, but Minooka Community High School students Kaela Kreis and Sydney Monroe are willing to go out into the unknown to join the World Race Gap Year mission trip in September.

The World Race Gap Year mission trip is a nine-month trip designed for college students ages 18 to 22, following the typical September to May college schedule.

“This is a good time for me to go because I haven’t started college yet and there is nothing tying me to the United States right now. I’m hoping this trip will help me to decide what I want to pursue in college as a career,” Kreis said.

Monroe wants to use this time to grow and reflect on her future while helping others.

“I always thought college was a good idea, but I just don’t know what I want to do. Missions are great and I hope this trip allows me to grow within myself and my faith to lead me in my future,” Monroe said.

Minooka students continue fundraising for mission trip abroad

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD DWIGHT – The Dwight Fire Protection District is in need of a few good people to join its fire department due to a critical shortage in firefighters.

“It seems to be cyclical. Every volunteer fire department faces the same thing. We could definitely use some people,” Dwight Fire Chief Paul Johnson said.

Many of the more active members have either moved out of the area or resigned because of family and job commitments.

Johnson said the most dif-

ficult time to get personnel to respond is during the daytime hours.

Since Jan. 1, the department has averaged only two firefighters per call. In the evening and overnight hours it is getting a response of four firefighters.

“To get on the fire department you don’t have to do anything,” Johnson said. “It’s just an application process and once you are on the fire department, we provide training.”

The Dwight Fire Protection District trains every Monday night, and offers optional additional training on some weekends.

Firefighters are paid for training and to go on calls, and are paid twice a year, with one check in May and the second in December.

For those who are considering a career in firefighting, joining the department can provide on-the-job training while getting the requirements needed to become a firefighter at a paid department.

The district prefers firefighters to be at least 18, but will take 17-year-olds as cadets to get them up to speed by the time they reach 18. Cadets don’t go into fires; instead they

Morris to regulate green, sustainable energy systems

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Installation of small wind energy systems and solar energy devices will be regulated from this point forward in Morris.

The Morris City Council approved 8-0 Monday night a Morris Planning Commission recommendation to regulate the systems. Those interested in adding a sustainable energy system will have to apply with the Morris Building and Zoning office.

The regulation will be on a residential, commercial and industrial level, Morris Building and Zoning officer Bill Cheshareck said Wednesday.

“The city didn’t have a

way to legislate it,” Cheshareck said. “The hope is to keep everything cohesive and prevent installation from being unsightly.”

Cheshareck said Morris City Planner Mike Hoffman drafted the ordinance because of sustainable energy system regulation experiences in other communities.

Ground-mounted solar panels can create glare issues, and old windmills can be a noise issue, Hoffman said. All prior installations will be grandfathered in, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

Hoffman said residences will have to consider the proximity to other homes when applying.

District 201 plans superintendent search Hire date hoped for July; position may include business manager role

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Hiring a new superintendent can seem straightforward – unless the superintendent being replaced holds two jobs, making the matter more complicated.

Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 faces this challenge, having to find a replacement for Superintendent Al Gegenheimer, who is the district’s superintendent as well as its business manager.

Gegenheimer is retiring early and will hold his positions until June 5. After that, an interim superintendent will be named until a replacement is found. The district hopes to have the new leader chosen by July.

The board hired consultant Dave Love of the Illinois Association of School Boards to

assist in the search.

Love and the board met Tuesday to discuss the search, including whether applicants should have a background in school finance, or to hire a business manager with those qualifications and a superintendent.

“We don’t need to add more staff; we can find someone who does both jobs,” board member Doug Martin said. “Do you think it will be difficult finding someone like Al Gegenheimer?”

“Yes I do, Doug. This is a difficult situation because we need a financial person as well as a superintendent,” board Vice President John Clucas said. “Al is doing two jobs, he is like the CEO and the CFO of a company. It’s going to be hard to find someone who can do that.”

Gegenheimer offered some input Tuesday.

“I want the board to be cautious. Sometimes districts hire a superintendent with business background and they get six weeks into the job and they can’t do it,” Gegenheimer said.

“Then the district is left hiring a separate business manager.

Not to say there aren’t people out there who can’t do it.

There are, but you need to be careful.”

The board decided to include school finance in the qualifications for a new superintendent.

If such a person is not found, the search will be restructured to possibly split up the positions.

Salary discussion also was a hot topic.

Love suggested including numbers in the job posting, but the board had a difficult time putting numbers to the position.

Martin threw out some numbers, based on other area superintendents, but board President Jim Satorius said if the board wishes to hire someone for two positions, the salary base will have to be higher

The newly formed board then took care of a few items of business, including accepting the resignation of Chief School Business Official John Bryk, effective June 30. He has accepted a position with Orland School District 135 and will begin there July 1. MINOOKA – Three new members were sworn into office during Tuesday’s Minooka Community High School District 111 Board meeting.

Lori Lakota, Kristine Shipla and Lawrence Troutman took their oaths of office for four-year terms. Current board member Wendi Arlis was sworn in for a two-year term.

The new members were welcomed, and retiring members who did not seek re-election – Mark French, Jennifer Miney and Karen Buchanan – were thanked for their service.

School Board President Mike Brozovich said the last couple of terms have been “trying times,” but differing opinions among members helped move the district to where it should be. Superintendent Jim Blanche said he has seen all

seven board members try hard to work as a team and yet still give their individual opinions on issues.

French congratulated the new members and thanked the community for the opportunity to serve the past four years.

“As chairman of the Curriculum Committee, I am so impressed with our team of instructional leaders,” he said.

He also advised new board members to “assume goodwill” and to disagree with dignity and respect. Buchanan said her time on the board was educational in many ways.

“Being a school board member is not an easy position to hold,” she said, “but it is well worth it, and kids are the No. 1 priority.”

She advised the reorganized board to have “courage on the path to necessary reductions” and to “serve the district with a clear conscience ... and act in the best interest of our kids.”

The center was set to have 720 solar panels, which will provide 230 kilowatts of power. The previous project manager said in October 2013 the center wanted the

panels in place by the end of 2014 to receive federal government funds offered as an incentive for solar panels.

The panels are on the oncology center, Cheshareck said, they just haven’t been activated because the project isn’t finished.

“People do not use enough SPF. One shot glass is the amount of SPF needed for the average size individual,” Malinowski said.

Self-exams of the skin are also a must, as well as yearly dermatologist appointments.

“You may think it’s nothing but a tiny pinhead size mole can be skin cancer,” Malinowski said.

When doing a self-exam, know your ABCDEs, she said.

Those letters stand for Asymmetry (when one half of the mole doesn’t match the other); Border (a benign mole should have a smooth, even border); Color (a benign mole should be all the same color); Diameter (benign moles are usually small in diameter while melanomas are larger, about the size of a pencil eraser); and Evolving (benign moles generally stay the same over time in size, shape and color.)

Monroe said she is up for anything and understands the path she chose may not be how the trip goes in the end. But for now, she is planning on visiting Thailand, South Africa and Nicaragua.

When asked what they will miss the most about being in the United States, both women laughed and said running water, comforts of home, friends, family, missing holidays and birthdays, church groups and Monroe emphatically stated she will miss American food the most.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty

Both girls are not new to the mission field, having done work on American soil and abroad. Kreis has been to Africa to visit her missionary grandparents with her mother, Jan Kreis, who grew up in Uganda as a missionary child.

She also has gone to St. Lucia and was involved with Spy

Kidz vacation Bible camp with Minooka Bible Church.

Monroe also was on the team who went to St. Lucia, as well as a counselor during Spy Kidz vacation Bible camp.

Monroe’s stepfather, Derek Breen, thinks his stepdaughter’s trip will be a fantastic learning experience, saying that if more people were inclined to help in this world, it would be a better place.

“To sum it all up, this trip will broaden her horizons including her religion and within herself. She will realize things she thinks are important now, aren’t so important after all, and learn to not take things for granted,” Breen said.

Jan Kreis said this trip is great for her daughter and all kids because it isn’t a fluff trip. The girls will get down to the nitty-gritty and have some amazing experiences.

“This is a growing-up experience. She will see different cultures, see how other people live, and know how good she has it here. I also know this will deepen her relationship with the Lord,” Jan said.

Nick Ficarello was sworn in last week after being appointed by new mayor Jim Vehrs to replace Rich Girot, who was chief since 2011.

“It’s the mayor’s prerogative to hire the police chief.

I interviewed a few candidates and Nick had the most

outstanding qualifications,” Vehrs said Wednesday. “I look forward to seeing what he can do with the Nick department.”

It’s perhaps Ficarello no surprise Vehrs chose to replace Girot, who filed a petition to have him removed from the ballot before the election.

Girot, who was a Will County Sheriff’s Deputy for 22 years

and Braidwood mayor from 1995 to 1999, served as police chief and city administrator under Bill Rulien, who faced Vehrs for office for a second time.

Ficarello was a Will County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1978 to 2009, when he retired as a deputy chief.

While a sheriff’s officer, Ficarello was a sergeant in the Gang Suppression Unit and the multi-agency Cooperative Police Assistance Team.

He later served as president

of the union for sergeants and lieutenants in the sheriff’s department.

Since retiring from the county, Ficarello has been director of campus security at Lewis University and a parttime officer in Posen. Last year, he lost an extremely close primary race to be the Republican candidate for Will County Sheriff.

“I have a strong background in narcotics investigation and heroin is going to be one of my biggest concerns,”

Ficarello said Wednesday.

Ficarello said he also will focus on the department’s budget.

There are 13 sworn officers, one of whom will be assigned to a multi-agency task force, Vehrs said.

“We have to provide the necessary services to keep everyone safe, but we can’t overburden the city financially,” Ficarello said.

Girot did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.

Last known member of U.S.’ German moon rocket design team dies

By JAY REEVES The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The last known surviving member of the German engineering team that came to the United States after World War II and designed the rocket that took astronauts to the moon has died. Oscar Carl Holderer died Tuesday in Huntsville, Alabama, son Michael Holderer said Wednesday. He was 95.

Holderer said his father

suffered a stroke last week and did not recover.

Born in Germany the year after World War I ended, Holderer came to the United States in 1945 with a group of 120 rocket engineers led by Wernher von Braun. Their move was part of a project called “Operation Paperclip” that transferred technology for the German V-2 and other rockets to the United States.

“He brought our first rocket wind tunnel in this country

from Germany and personally set it up,” said Ed Buckbee, a space historian and former NASA publicist. First based at White Sands, New Mexico, the team moved in 1950 to north Alabama’s Redstone Arsenal, where they used early computers, slide rules and pencils to design the Saturn V rocket that first took astronauts to the lunar surface in 1969.

Holderer said his father – a mechanical engineer, designer and fabricator who became a

U.S. citizen in 1955 – designed the high-speed wind tunnel that was used to develop Saturn and then oversaw its construction at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, located at Redstone.

“He was one of the more hands-on members of the team,” Holderer said. “He had his own machine shop here in town as a hobby.”

Some members of the von Braun team eventually returned to Germany and others

spread out across the United States after retirement, but Holderer was the last known survivor of the original group, Buckbee said.

“He was a very talented man, not only an aeroballistics expert but very accomplished in design and fabrication,” said Buckbee.

After his retirement from NASA in 1974, Holderer built training devices that are still in use at the state-run U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Fishing for a Cure another success Exelon’s bass tournament concludes 14th year for charities MORRIS HERALD–NEWS BRACEVILLE – Each year Exelon’s Fishing for a Cure charity bass tournament reels in more than just anglers competing for the top prize and bragging rights. The tournament raises money and awareness for local charities.

In its 14-year history, the tournament has now topped $400,000, according to a news release from Exelon.

Saturday’s tournament raised $47,700, which will be split between three local nonprofit hospices – Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice, Joliet Area Community Hospice and Hospice of Kankakee

County.

Eighty-two, two-person teams from around the Midwest competed.

Brian Belke of Minooka and Jim Rura of Morris took home first place and the $4,000 prize. Their three fish total of 10.15 pounds was best in the tournament field.

Coming in second was the team of Dave Sanders and Pete Banach of Monee whose catch for the day totaled 9.88 pounds. They fished on a sponsored team for the charity and donated their $2,500 prize.

Taking home the third place trophy and $1,000 for their three fish total of 9.87

pounds was Chuck Sabias and Rufus Eskew. Teams placing fourth though 10th place split the remaining $2,500 prize money.

“We were honored to be selected as one of the charities for this event,” Joliet Area Community Hospice board member Jim Galligan said.

More than 70 young anglers from ages 2 to 12 competed in their own fishing derby held at Godley Park District pond.

Winners in the 5 and under category were Leah Martin, 5, of Morris (first place), Dylan Wyatt, 2, of Shorewood (second) and Shane Boyle, 4, of Morris (third).

James Wyatt, 7, of Shorewood, took home first place in the 6-8 category; his sister, Danielle, 8, took second place.

Third place went to Jaiden Scrugg, 8, of Park Forest. In the 9-12 category, the winners

were Steven Hoffman, 12, of Godley (first place), Jace Shaw, 11, of Coal City (second) and Ashley Chojnacki, 12, of Plainfield (third). Steven Hoffman, 12, of Godley, and Brody Alexander, 6, of Coal City, snared the biggest fish; while Chase Wadsworth, 8, of Godley, reeled in the smallest fish.

More than 40 volunteers including employees and family members from Braidwood Station and the Reed Custer High School Casting Comets staffed the event.

Braidwood Station employees Brian Daniels and Steve Friddle served as weigh in officials. ESPN’s Chauncey Niziol served as the tournament host.

All proceeds raised through tournament go to the recipient charities, which are selected annually by station employees.

COLLEGE BRIEF Contractors’ scholarship program offered

The Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties’ has announced its annual scholarship program. Applicants must be the son/daughter of an owner or applicant must be a son/daughter of a full-time employee of a CAWGC member company or a son/daughter of a Will/Grundy union building tradesman, who will be attending college full-time in the fall or a present full time college student who is pursuing an undergraduate degree.

A construction related major and a “C or better” average is also required. The application deadline is May 29. An interview will be required for all first-time finalists. Recipients will be announced in the summer.

OPINION Celebrating a true American hero When Pope Francis comes to the United States in September, he will recognize Junipero Serra, founding father of the California missions, as a saint at a Mass on the campus of the Catholic University of America (my alma mater).

Serra will be the first Hispanic saint for the United States of America, celebrated by the first pope from the Americas.

Serra, despite his radical commitment as a Franciscan missionary priest to Christ, would consider himself among the unworthy sinners of the Earth – much as Pope Francis himself frequently says he does.

According to Timothy 2:4, the Lord wills everyone to come to a knowledge of the truth. What a contrast this message is to some religious stories in the media.

Jean-Clement Jeanbart, an archbishop from Aleppo, Syria, was in New York this past week pleading for the West to end its relative ignorance and inaction in response to the persecution of Christians in his home country.

In a speech at New York University, he said: “As Christian leaders in Syria are appealing for reconciliation and peace and openness, radical Muslim factions are calling for jihad and exclusion, a kind of apartheid for all non-Muslims.”

Serra’s message was one of welcome, not coercion. Still, Serra’s canonization – something Pope Francis himself prioritized – has proven controversial. A Los Angeles Times editorial recently advocated the removal of his statue from the U.S. Capitol building – what an insulting welcome this would be for such a refreshing moral leader.

Contemporaries affirm he was a saint, an apostle of Jesus Christ who lived his life in radical commitment to the Gospel, a calling that brought him to leave his family and home and give his life to God in service to those whose lives might be better with his help, as an instrument of a loving and merciful God. We need those people in our midst today. We need his example serving as contrast to some of the violence we see around the world. We must not let ideology cloud the gift of celebrating his life, which is a gift to us and our future.

Twister survivors, board agree: Mirtoska is a hero The Ogle County Board has officially proclaimed the owner of Grubsteakers restaurant a hero.

And why not?

With an EF4 tornado bearing down on her eatery north of Rochelle the evening of April 9, Ava Mirtoska kept her head.

Thinking of the safety of her customers, Mirtoska remembered the old storm cellar beneath her business.

A survivor, Raymond Kramer of Ashton, recalled what happened next: “Next thing I know, the manager said, ‘Everyone in the basement, right now.’ We were placed in an old-fashioned storm cellar.”

Mirtoska hunkered down there with 11 other people – employees, customers, and several passers-by who sought shelter from the twister’s fury.

One of those lucky 12 was Tod Carlock of Mount

Morris, who left his Meyer Trucking semi parked outside to escape the storm.

“The whole thing was over in a minute and a half,” Carlock said. “You didn’t hear a roar or anything like that. It was more like heavy wind.”

With the tornado gone, now came the waiting game.

The storm cellar that had saved their lives became a temporary prison. No one could get out because of the rubble overhead.

About 90 minutes later, rescuers arrived and helped Mirtoska and her new best friends climb out to safety, all basically unscathed.

Relieved to have survived such a close brush with death, Kramer began to sing.

Carlock started laughing at his twisted, damaged truck.

And the others thanked their lucky stars – and Ava Mirtoska – for their deliverance from danger.

Recognizing the key role Mirtoska played, the Ogle County Board voted to proclaim May 7 as Ava Mirtoska Day in Ogle County.

A proclamation approved by board members honors her as a hero for her quick thinking in the face of incredible danger.

With her restaurant destroyed, what does the future hold?

Mirtoska plans to rebuild at the same corner of Routes 251 and 64.

“My employees need jobs, and my customers need a place to go,” she said.

We can think of 11 grateful people, along with their families and friends, who likely will be first in line to patronize her new restaurant.

We join the Ogle County Board and a long list of area residents who salute Ava Mirtoska and congratulate her for being a hero.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Morris’ Henry taking his shot at NFL

roesterle@shawmedia.com Kevin Henry has had quite a year. And it’s not over. In fact, it might be starting.

He started all 13 games for the Central Michigan University football team in the fall, including the Bahamas Bowl.

He also graduated from CMU in December. The highlight is right around the corner.

Henry, a 2010 graduate of Morris Community High School, has a flight to Atlanta scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Thursday.

Henry, who started all 25 games at right tackle the past two seasons for Central Michigan University, will take part in the Falcons’ rookie minicamp in Atlanta in the hopes of making the team.

Henry waited during last week’s NFL draft in Chicago for his name to be called, but it wasn’t. He was prepared for that contingency, though.

“I was hearing a lot of different things before the draft,” Henry said. “I might get drafted, I might not get drafted, someone might sign me right away as an undrafted free agent. I might have to go to rookie camp. There are a lot of different routes that people take to get to the NFL. I have accepted that this is my route, and I am going to work as hard as I can to get there.

“About an hour after the draft was over, my agent called and said I was going to Atlanta’s mini-camp. I know that I leave at 8:45 Thursday morning and someone will meet me at the baggage claim. After that, I will do whatever they tell me to.”

One thing Henry will have going for him when he gets to Atlanta is that he will not be worried about his schoolwork.

He graduated from Central Michigan in December with a BS in Business Administration and General Management. Thus, his time has been spent getting ready to take his shot at the NFL. “I’d like to play football for as long as I possibly can,” he said. “I was out in New Jersey working out for my pro day for a while, and I had a pretty

at school and a lot of us have been training together. We had one player get drafted, two sign as free agents and there

are six of us going to rookie camps. It’s been good to have a group to work out with, because we push each other. If

you’re working out alone, you might think you are pushing yourself, but you never really know. When there are others there, you know they will push you every single day.”

No matter what happens, at least one friendly face will be waiting for Henry. Mike Kinville, who started at tight end for the Chippewas and was Henry’s roommate for the past five years, also will be at the Falcons’ camp.

“Mike was my roommate for all five years here and he played tight end right next me on the line,” Henry said. “It will be nice to have a familiar face down there in Atlanta.

Plus, having played next to each other for so long, we have a good chemistry. We both know each others’ strengths and weaknesses. That may turn out to be an advantage for me since we shouldn’t miss any assignments if we are on the line together.”

If things don’t go as he hopes in Atlanta, it isn’t the end of the line. Henry already has a trip to next weekend’s San Diego Chargers rookie camp lined up.

“My agent went through all the teams and found that the two best fits for me were Atlanta and San Diego. Everything went into consideration.

Based on my strengths and weaknesses, their offensive system and style and the state of their offensive lines, those were the two best choices for me.

“The ideal would be to not have to go to San Diego at all.

I am going to Atlanta with the plan of making that team.

If it doesn’t work out, then I have San Diego. But I would like to make it right away and not have to think about it any more.”

Bottom third leads Coal City past Ottawa

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com OTTAWA – The main job of the bottom third of a batting order is to turn it over to get back to the top.

Coal City’s seventh, eighth and ninth hitters did that to perfection Wednesday as the Coalers came away with a 5-2 nine-inning nonconference softball win over Ottawa.

The game was a scoreless pitchers’ duel between Ottawa’s Paige Lehr and Coal City’s Emily Aichele until the top of the fifth.

With one out, Coal City seven hitter Sam Olsen reached on an error. She was sacrificed to second by Sydney Miller, who was safe at first when the throw pulled the second baseman off the bag. The runners were sacrificed to second and third, and leadoff hitter Leah Campos singled them both in to make it 2-0.

Aichele kept it that way until the bottom of the seventh.

With one out, Ottawa’s Kimee Johnson walked and was doubled home by Lindsey Trager.

Trager went to third on an error on a ball hit by Lehr, but was thrown out at home on a grounder to third by Maddi Carpenter. Skylar Connelly followed with an RBI single to score Lehr with the tying run.

In the top of the ninth, Olsen led off with a single up the middle for the Coalers (15-9)

and was sacrificed to second

by Miller. A single brought in Olsen with the lead run, and Campos reached on an error.

A wild pitch sent the runners to second and third, and Taylor Meents doubled over third base to score both runners and make it 5-2.

“The bottom of the order did a great job,” Coal City coach Stephanie Harmon said.

“They put the ball in play, executed small ball and turned it over to the top. It was nice to see Taylor Meents get that hit.

She has been working on that.

Everyone knows that she’s a bunter and slapper, so for her to get a hit over the infield like that will really help her confidence.”

Aichele faced some trouble in the bottom of the ninth, but was able to escape. The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs, but Aichele got the last batter to fly out to right to end the game. She went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits and striking out five against three walks, one of which was intentional.

“Emily pitched great,” Harmon said. “She pitched every game for us last year, so I don’t think going nine was a big deal for her. She threw strikes and let the defense make the plays behind her.”

Aichele said she has been working on her control.

“I know I have to keep the walks down,” she said. “This

was a good lineup for me. After I saw them a couple times, I knew what they liked to hit and kept it away from there.

I knew our defense would make the plays in the field,

and I was confident that our offense would eventually get us enough runs.”

The win was the 13th in the past 16 for Coal City, which has rallied from a 2-6 start to

sport its 15-9 record.

“We are playing better as the season goes on,” Harmon said. “I like to see that. I would rather finish the way we are than finish on a 2-6 streak.”

Burton claims firsts for Morris girls track STAFF REPORTS YORKILLE – Leona Burton had a big day for the Morris girls track team Tuesday, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Redskins suffered an 88-39 defeat at the hands of Yorkville.

Burton came away with three first-place finishes, as she won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 11 inches, took the 100-meter dash in 12.61 seconds and captured the 200 in a time of 27.02.

Sabrina Baftiri won the 400 with a time of 1:04 for Morris, while the 4x100 relay of Baftiri, Jessica Webber, Amy Heath and Madi Mayberry took first in 53.59. Taking second for Morris were Madi Mayberry in the long jump (16 feet, 1⁄2 inches) and the 200 (27.51), Meghan Smith in the high jump (4-10) and Maria Blanco in the 800 (3:29). Less than a week after he was drafted No. 7 overall by the Bears – and joked that he was frugal about jewelry, buying earrings from the store at the mall – the former West Virginia receiver was one of two players to agree to deals with the team Wednesday.

The Bears also signed their second-round draft pick, former Florida State nose tackle Eddie Goldman, to a four-year contract. Because he was a first-rounder, White’s fourdeal has a fifth-year team option.

Terms were not announced.

The size of their deals will be based on the NFL’s salary

cap and rookie compensation pool, but White is expected to make around $16 million.

Cancer diagnosis unlikely to thaw grandmother’s heart Dear Abby: I recently found out my grandmother has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has elected not to treat it.

The doctors give her a year at the most. My dilemma is whether to extend just one more olive branch.

She has never been a “warm and fuzzy” type of grandmother. She was cold and distant when I was in my teens and 20s, and downright mean when I was in my 30s.

If I try to talk to her at family functions, she turns away and begins a conversation with someone else, not even acknowledging I’m standing there. Last year at a family reunion, she took several photos with my mom and sister, and when it was suggested I

Dear Abby: Ever since I was young, which was not that long ago, I have known my parents’ marriage wasn’t a healthy one. But only recently has it begun to affect me emotionally. It isn’t that I blame myself, but I’m afraid of how my own romantic endeavors will fare.

my mother’s infidelity. I was always curious and suspected one or both of them had affairs. But now more than before, I worry about finding love. Love is something we all seek, and I believe we all need, but I don’t see myself as able to handle that kind of heartbreak.

I understand why Mom did it – that’s part of what hurts me. I’m angry they would masquerade a failure “for me,” that failure being their “relationship.” I think my anger is valid. My family has screwed me up emotionally and it started long before I knew what was going on.
