Council approves property zoning

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The zoning of a property on North Street was decided Monday night after spending five weeks in limbo.

The Morris City Council voted 8-0 to approve a Zoning Map Amendment request

by Les Peterson, owner of a property at 115 E. North St., from Business-2 central shopping district to a Residential-4 multi-family zoning.

“Mr. Peterson has been to five public hearings now, which might set the record,” Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said during the meeting.

Council members conditionally approved April 6 a request for a zoning change, pending Morris Zoning Board of Appeals approval of two variances, which took place last week.

The building was a single-family home long ago and most recently a chiropractic office and sleep clinic. It was converted by the previous owner to seven apartment units without the city’s knowl-

The first variance allows for seven parking spaces instead of 14. Two spaces are typically required per unit.

Demolishing a garage at the rear of the property will allow Peterson to have eight parking stalls paved. The eighth may be used for a large garbage drop for tenants, he said last week.

The City Council approved both variances submitted by the ZBA, 8-0.

In other real estate news, the council approved a residence at 606 E. Illinois Ave. for a conditional permitted use request by David and Sharon Bus for a two-family dwelling.

Cheshareck said the residence lost its grandfather status as a two-family unit.

The Buses, both real estate brokers, appeared before the Morris Planning Commission last week and said the entire unit is built as two separate units. The commission agreed no one would buy the building and turn it into a single-family home again because the cost would be too large.

The Buses said they own four properties in Morris, and this particular property has been rehabilitated with the goal to lease the property.

First Ward Alderman Randy Larson was sworn in at the beginning of the meeting, after his absence from the first 201516 fiscal year meeting Friday.

Bernickus was diagnosed last year with osteosarcoma. returning home with pain following the spring 2014 semester, tests revealed he had osteosarcoma – a cancer that begins in the bones.

“It wasn’t a complete shock,” he said. “I had been living in pain for a while.”

Experiencing pain in his lower back and weakness in one leg, Bernickus said it felt

like he had a pinched nerve.

A surgery removed a portion of the tumor in July, just before he planned to attend the University of Illinois – Chicago College of Pharmacy’s Rockford Campus.

Instead, Bernickus began 11 weeks of chemotherapy and

MORRIS – The student council at Morris Community High School annually selects deserving causes for donating proceeds from Spring Week fundraising.

But this year, student council members set out to start a new tradition.

The council set out four jars in the school lobby – one each for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors – before first period and during lunch hours. Students filled the jars with loose change and dollar bills, and at the end of Spring Week, April 7 to 10, the first-ever winner of the Spring Week Banner was decided.

The Class of 2017 had its class picture taken and posted on the wall of the hallway to the main gym. A new winner will be added to the wall each year, with a total of donation amount.

“As Spring Week went on, participation increased,” Student Body President Leah Lines said. “It was amazing to see.”

Morris Community High School Principal Kelly Hussey said it was the best example of what students can do with resources provided.

“The spring pep assembly was one of the best I’ve ever seen,” Hussey said. “Student council came up with the concept and motivated the bulk of the student population to participate.”

Hussey said it will be human nature for future classes to attempt to one-up the previous year’s donation as part of an annual challenge for a good cause.

The student council decided to split the $1,200 raised between two causes – a former MCHS student battling cancer and an orphanage.

The law also states any woman denied the right to breastfeed by the owner or manager of a public or private location, other than a private residence or place of worship, can bring action against the location’s owner.

WILMINGTON – When John Mathias, owner of Big Fish Grille in Wilmington, thinks about breaking the law, he thinks of theft, burglary and murder.

He doesn’t think that would include asking a breastfeeding mother to cover up while she is feeding her baby in a restaurant.

“I’ve never refused service to a breastfeeding mother or asked them to leave,” Mathias said. “In the seven years I’ve been in business, I’ve had many customers breastfeed and it’s never been an issue.”

It became an issue Sunday when Kristal Snow Tomko of Wilmington came to the restaurant with her family.

“We had just received our drinks when the hostess brought out a cloth and said, Never denied service ‘We need you to cover up, Tomko said she was never there has been a customer denied service or told she had complaint.’ I smiled and said to leave, but felt embarrassed

Tomko said she loves the restaurant and would love to see the owners better educated about breastfeeding so she can return to dine there. She has reached out to an organization with resources for training that said it would contact the

restaurant, Tomko said.

Tomko said the situation would have been best handled by the restaurant telling the offended customers state law protects breastfeeding moms and offering to reseat them.

Joe Cook stepped down after six years as village trustee and 12 years as village president.

“It’s been a wonderful 18 years of serving this community,” Cook said.

Schumacher was sworn into office by Will County Circuit Judge Ray Nash, a Channahon resident. She then administered the oath of office to Village Clerk Patricia P e r i n a r a n d Missey Trustees Scott Schumacher McMillin, Debbie Militello and Scott Slocum, all re-elected in April. Schumacher thanked her parents, her husband and family, and her grandfather, Steve Rittof Sr., a former Channahon village president to whom she said she owes a debt of gratitude.

Schumacher discussed how her political career began. Village Clerk Eileen Clark had to step down because of health issues in 2008, and there was an opening for the position.

“I was minding my own business hanging my clothes on my clothesline, and Joe Cook pulled into the driveway,” she said. “He said, ‘Can I appoint you village clerk?’ ” She was elected to the position the following term, then voted in as trustee in 2013.

“I wanted to have a decision in the direction of the village,” she said.

lieved she could make a positive difference in the village by running for mayor, especially with what she sees as an economic rebound on the horizon.

She said before Monday’s meeting that she loves Channahon’s small-town feeling and wants to retain it while bringing in more retail by attracting visitors to the village’s many natural resources.

Cook says goodbye

Cook said he first ran for office after tiring of a group of friends complaining about the way the village was run.

He lost his first run in 1995, then got serious and won in 1997. There were growth issues at the time, he said, and standards of housing needed to be addressed, as did some police department issues.

Some of the highlights of his years leading the village were bringing in medical facilities, bringing stoplights to several Route 6 intersections and reshaping the police department.

“Before, we were making the papers and not for good reasons,” Cook said of the police department. “We went from a department on the edge of failing to a premier police department and one of the top 100 safest communities in the United States. I am so proud of everything our police department has accomplished.”

The best part of his time in office, he said, were the “wonderful people I’ve met and the wonderful organizations I’ve been involved with. I’ve enjoyed the different roles and the learning opportunities with local governmental matters to truly global affairs. ...

Bruce Rauner’s Turn Around Agenda.

“I’m happy to have a room full of constituents, we don’t normally have that,” Chairwoman Deb Warning said as she opened the county’s Legislation and VAC Committee meeting.

After an executive session involving a separate issue at the start of the meeting, the floor was opened for public comment.

The meeting was held in the county board room to fit the amount of people in attendance.

“I just want the board members to know we have 12,000 union workers in Grundy County,” said Doc Gregory, Business Agent with Pipefitters Local 597 and president of the Will & Grundy Counties Building Trades Council.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Caleb Mercado describes his first year as director of the Christian Youth Center of Morris as “incredible.”

“It has been filled with laughter, challenges, big questions, big answers, victories, vision, truth and funny fac- Caleb es,” he said at Mercado Friday’s annual CYCM banquet.

Mercado began the position in September with his wife Becky. He replaced outgoing Director Pete Vienne, who also attended the banquet, as did the center’s first director, Nick Marcoux.

Mercado was formally introduced to the community at the event that brought together students, volunteers, alumni and community members.

The CYCM is a nondenominational youth group comprising junior and high school teens from several churches in the community and some who are new at exploring relationships with Christ. Mercado said the program is a popular one and could use more volunteers, especially youth groups and pastors who can help the teens feel welcome and perhaps visit their churches for a chance to join a healthy congregation.

Adult volunteers also are needed to help provide food for the teens, help with homework, assist with driving lessons, play games with them and many other tasks.

Nationwide food drive to be held

JOLIET – Letter carriers will collect food donations left at mailboxes Saturday as part of a national effort to reduce hunger.

The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct the 23rd annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in more than 10,000 communities, including areas of Will and Grundy counties.

The NALC is asking people to leave bags of nonperishable food items – such as canned soup, meats, vegetables and fruit – by their mailboxes Saturday.

Pam Donato, NALC community and membership outreach coordinator, said the concept is simple, but powerful.

She said the food drive is happening at a critical time, since some children from low-income backgrounds cannot access food once the school year ends.

“The timing of it for us is really important, as it helps stock the shelves of local community pantries just as kids get out of school,” Donato said.

All food donated will stay in the community and will not be shipped to a regional distribution center hundreds of miles away, according to the NALC. No special bags are needed.

Paper bags tend to be sturdy and hold more food, but plastic holds up better if it’s wet. Cloth bags or boxes are good, as well.

In the past, many letter carriers collected food for people in need as part of a community service effort until NALC, the U.S. Postal Service and AFL-CIO Community Services Department proposed a coordinated effort, according to NALC. A pilot drive held in 10 cities in 1991 proved successful enough to lead to a nationwide effort. In 2010, the food drive gathered more than 1 billion pounds of food.

“Student council heard of his diagnosis and we wanted to do something to honor him,” Lines said. “Our theme this year was ‘EVERY AGE and EVERY STAGE.’ ” To show support for Bernickus, a former baseball player who wore No. 31, the senior spring week shirts had “31” on the back.

“I’m amazed by the community support,” Bernickus said.

“It’s a surprise every time I hear from someone. You can’t expect things like this to happen.”

Bernickus has been under-

going physical therapy three times a week, and points to his sports background for guidance.

“Sports has definitely helped me through this,” Bernickus said. “You have to start from scratch. I’ve always had in my mind where I need to be physically and that’s my goal.”

The remaining proceeds were donated to Hannah’s Hope Orphanage in Ethiopia, and will help pay for children’s basic needs.

Junior Alexa Rain works with the orphanage and brought the cause to Student Council’s attention. Rain has a younger sister who was adopted from Ethiopia.

Rain initially was apprehensive about having a new sibling, as she was used to be-

ing the center of attention. But her parents adopted the 3-yearold, who now is 8.

Rain hopes to eventually film documentaries in Ethiopia after she majors in multimedia studies at Olivet Nazarene University.

“My interest in working for a good cause began after I met her when I was 12,” Rain said.

“She was in awe of everything she had. I didn’t pay attention to things like that before.”

Ben Lawrence of Joliet and Sarah Larson of Morris were two of them. They met when they were in the CYC and now are in a relationship. Lawrence said he was a typical “angsting” teenager when a friend brought him to his first CYC night.

“Nick and Amy [Marcoux] took the time to establish meaningful relationships with me,” he said.

Board President Art DeGraaf said the job of CYC is to minister to the kids of the community in several ways.

“We feed them, we tutor them, we listen to them,” he said, “and we give them a place to come and call their own. After school, at 3:45, kids are knocking at the door.”

DeGraaf said there are a lot of teens in Morris who are “begging for people to listen to them and to just care for them. ... We love them where they come from. We’ll take you as you are.”

By J.M. HIRSCH The Associated Press CHICAGO – Food critic Josh Ozersky, whose witty and snarky writing generally focused on his obsession with all things meat, has died in Chicago. He was 47.

Ozersky, who was in the city for the James Beard Foundation Awards, was found dead in his room at the Conrad Chicago Hotel on Monday, according to the Cook Coun-

ty medical examiner’s office.

Authorities said a Tuesday autopsy was inconclusive and the final determination on the cause and manner of Ozersky’s death requires further testing.

Ozersky was a food writer for Esquire magazine and frequent contributor to other publications including Time magazine, the Wall Street Journal and Food & Wine.

He also was an author and founding editor of New York

Magazine’s Grub Street food blog.

He was on the awards committee for this year’s Beard Foundation awards, which honor those who follow in the footsteps of James Beard, considered the dean of American cooking when he died in 1985. Ozersky was in Chicago to attend the ceremony, which took place Monday night.

Ozersky, who had recently moved to Portland, Oregon, also had recently become in-

volved with the South Beach and New York City Wine and Food Festivals. The man behind those events, Lee Schrager, said Ozersky’s legacy will be his willingness to cross boundaries in his pursuit of his writings.

“He was as passionate about meat as any renowned butcher, and he turned that passion into a living, breathing experience to share with people with Meatopia,” Schrager said in an email.

“We were honored to work so closely with him on the event during both festivals in recent years, and his rhetoric will be sorely missed by all.”

Ozersky drew the ire of other critics in 2010, for accepting free cooking and food from famous chef friends at his wedding, then writing about the experience for Time magazine without disclosing the gifts.

He later acknowledged he should have been more upfront.

Tomko posted to her Facebook wall about the experience and also to a private Kankakee Breastfeeding Support Group on Facebook. Before long, the post was shared repeatedly and she was receiving private

messages of support from around the world.

She said her concerns aren’t for herself, but for others who may be younger or more timid, and having a similar experience might make them stop breastfeeding. As word of the incident spread, there’s been a direct effect on Mathias’ business. He watched as his Yelp rating plummeted from

five stars to under three in one day. He started receiving messages to his Facebook business page. As of Tuesday, he was fielding calls to the restaurant where he said he has been threatened.

“Customers have canceled reservations today, threatening my life and threatening to damage my business,” he said.

“It’s social terrorism.”

Tomko said she never intended to harm the business.

A group of breastfeeding mothers had united on Facebook to arrange a “nurse in” Friday at Big Fish, but as of Tuesday evening, the event was changed after Mathias apologized on a television news channel.

Tomko said the event will no longer be a “nurse in,” but

a way to acknowledge the establishment for recognizing it needed to improve its practices and move forward.

“I’ve heard they plan on having 120 breastfeeding women come, and when they do they will be greeted with respect,” Mathias said Tuesday afternoon prior to the event change. “They are welcome here.”

The board continued to hear from other union leaders and elected officials, including past Channahon Village President Joe Cook, a Republican, and Will County Board Member Don Moran, a Democrat, who all spoke out against the resolution. No one spoke in favor of the resolution.

Tim Kallas of Coal City, a union laborer with Local 75, said he visits his classmates in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he graduated, and they ask him how they can get work like he has here. He said it’s a right to

work state and he has heard their struggles, and he for one doesn’t want that for Coal City or Grundy County.

“I wish you people would listen to this. I’m just a boot on the ground, I’m not a representative, a filed spokesman for my local. I’m just a boot on the ground. I mean I’m a mutt. I go to work, I do my job and I come home,” he said. “I don’t like coming here and standing up here. I’m scared poopless right now. But if I have to come here, I will.”

Warning called for a motion to vote on the resolution.

Kerri Courtright motioned, the other committee members, which included Debra Jo Kinsella, Millie Dyer, David Nelson, Mike Onorato and Harold Vota, declined to second the motion, causing the room to erupt in cheers from the union members present. Without a second, the committee could not discuss the resolution and it could not go to vote.

will be tops. Spread butter over 2 slices, cream cheese on another 2, marmalade on another 2, and brie over the final 2.

For the fillings, arrange the sliced radishes over 1 of the buttered slices; the cucumber slices over the 1 of the cream cheese slices; the watercress over 1 of the marmalade slices; and the ham over 1 of the brie-covered slices.

Top the radishes with thin slices of avocado; the cucumber with tarragon; the chives over the watercress; and the pear over the ham.

Top each sandwich with the second slice of bread.

To cut the sandwiches, you can either use small cookie cutters (shapes such as ovals or hearts are fine) or you can trim off the crusts, then cut each sandwich into small triangles or rectangles.

If desired, secure each smaller sandwich with a toothpick.

Minooka suffers tough defeat to Plainfield North

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – After a hard-fought first game Tuesday night, neither coach could predict what would happen next in the Southwest Prairie Conference boys volleyball matchup between Minooka and Plainfield North.

North came out of the first game with a tight 26-24 win in a game that saw neither team lead by more than three points.

Then, the second game hit.

And Plainfield North could do no wrong.

The Tigers, who tightened the SPC race by improving to 7-2 in league matches, raced out to a 7-0 lead en route to a remarkably easy 25-10 win to claim the match.

“This was probably one of our best matches all season,” Plainfield North coach Tracey Marshall said. “We wanted to keep that mindset going into the second set. We have a young team, and they can be up and down. But once we got up, we stayed up and maintained that focus. Sometimes, the kids can get a little silly out there, but I was proud of the fellas for maintaining their focus all the way through.”

In the opening 7-0 run of the second game, Plainfield North got a kill each by Alex Pasek and Robert Muller, as well as a stuff block for a point by Muller.

Plainfield North amped up its net defense.

“We had a little trouble Monday night with our block,” Marshall said. “We wanted to focus on that tonight, and it worked. We stayed anchored on the outside instead of drifting farther out. That change made a big difference.”

When the Plainfield North block thwarted Minooka’s attack, it fell upon the North offense to convert it into points.

And they did, as Quinn Isaacson, Muller, Pasek and Evan Robeck all took turns swinging and getting the ball down.

Robeck sandwiched a pair of kills around one by Muller

to make it 20-6 and a Minooka hitting error made it 21-6. Robeck ended the match with an ace on his serve.

In the first set, Plainfield North held leads of 12-9 and 1411 early, only to see Minooka rally on the serve of Jack Baur to take an 18-15 lead.

North then got a kill by Pasek, two by Robeck and one

by Muller to take a 20-19 lead.

The game was tied at 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 before North got a point on a net violation and one on a block by Josh Cutshall to end the game.

“Volleyball is a very mental game,” Minooka coach Janel Grzetich said. “And, we didn’t show up mentally tonight. I don’t want to take anything away from Plainfield North, because they played very well.

Couple them playing well with us not playing well and you get what you saw tonight.

“Their block was very good tonight. When that happened, we needed to be more aggressive going after it. Instead, we were just trying to get the ball over the net instead of attacking. That let them come at us with us hoping they would make a mistake. It’s a team sport. You win as a team and you lose as a team. This was definitely a team loss tonight.”

COAL CITY – Good pitching and timely hitting. Those are two key ingredients to a winning baseball team, and Coal City got both of those Monday in a 3-0 Interstate Eight Conference win over Lisle.

Brad Littleton continued the Coalers’ run of strong pitching, as the junior who has committed to Indiana University fired a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Coalers (21-5, 9-2) have not allowed an earned run in their last five games, four of which have been shutouts. In that span, they have allowed just 14 hits and four walks while recording 42 strikeouts.

Offensively, Coal City scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning, getting key two-out hits from Ricky Collins and Nick Micetich.

“We are playing really good baseball right now,” Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said.

“Our pitchers have been in complete control and our defense has come up with big plays.“ Morris 1, Sterling 0: Cody Niewinski fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to run his record to 7-2 on the year.

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CLEVELAND – Feel-good stories surrounding the Bulls have a shelf-life.

When it comes to Tom Thibodeau and his future as the coach of the team? As Tuesday showed, that shelf-life is about one game.

And what a game it was, as the Bulls’ Big Three outplayed a LeBron James team, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. Then comes the off-day leading into tonight’s all-important Game 2, and lo and behold, there’s another national story concerning the Bulls’ front office and the disintegrated relationship they have with Thibodeau.

Game 2 at Cleveland, 6 p.m. today, TNT, AM-1000 Yahoo! Sports was the latest to pile on a bandwagon that seemingly would be running out of seating. And as usual, Thibodeau remained asbestos, not even flinching around all the heat.

“Nope,” Thibodeau responded, when asked if yet another report was getting bothersome for him. “I don’t pay any attention to it. It’s all noise.”

Basically, the same reaction he had last week in Milwaukee when he was asked about his relationship with management, the same reaction he had last month, the month before that and so on.

If it’s nothing but “noise” for Thibodeau, it barely is a whisper for his players.

“For one, it’s a somewhat aloof group in terms of what’s

going on around us, and that helps,” veteran Mike Dunleavy said, when asked about all of the talk concerning Thibodeau’s job security.

It’s not an ignorant group, according to Dunleavy, but when the core players are veterans who have been dealing with Thibodeau’s cold war with his bosses for years, well, it just doesn’t resonate in the locker room.

“Guys don’t ... I mean [that latest report] being told to me right now, I mean I didn’t even know about that,” Dunleavy said. “And I think for the most part guys aren’t aware of a lot of this stuff, to be frank. I mean you hear the noise, it’s out there. I think it’s just a group, though, that’s hardened by a lot of things we’ve gone through and a lot of adversity the last few years.

“There’s just not a lot of stuff that fazes us. We know all that stuff has been going on for a while now, but it doesn’t change our approach at all.”

Helping taxpayers should be the concern SPRINGFIELD – In the parking lots of some union halls you’ll still see the signs: “No foreign cars allowed.”

The signs almost seem quaint, a vestige of another era. But it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a state lawmaker from the Quad-Cities is sponsoring legislation that would require all vehicles purchased by the state of Illinois be manufactured in “North America” – the U.S. or Canada.

Last time I checked Mexico was part of North America but not in state Rep. Mike Smiddy’s bill.

The Democrat from Hillsdale told Illinois News Network his bill does not include Mexico because Mexico does not offer working conditions, standards and wages on par with the U.S. and Canada.

But if that is the criteria, why does the bill discriminate against German carmakers?

After all, autoworkers in Germany earn on average almost twice as much as their American counterparts.

What this is really about is helping the United Auto Workers, a union that represents many factory workers in the United States and Canada. The Quad-Cities, where Smiddy lives, is a UAW redoubt.

It’s also my favorite part of Illinois. I lived there for many years and grew to love the community.

The region has a rich UAW history as a farm implement manufacturing center. Even the city librarians in Moline belong to the UAW. Often when folks talk about “American made” cars what they really mean is unionmade ones. For example, I drive a Honda that was made in Alabama.

My wife, on the other hand, drives a Chevy made in Canada. When I bought my Honda six years ago, one of my wife’s co-workers criticized me for

When I pointed out where it was made his response was, “Yeah, but the money goes back to Japan.” The problem with that argument is that many Americans own stock in Honda. By the same token, governments such as that of China own large portions of “American” carmakers like General Motors. In fact, many overseas auto factories use parts made here in Illinois.

That’s one reason the Illinois Manufacturers Association opposes Smiddy’s bill, which has passed the House and is pending in the Senate.

The fact of the matter is the U.S. has two auto industries.

One composed of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler is mostly Midwestern and is unionized. The other American auto industry is mostly Southern and nonunion. The owners of these factories are Japanese, European and Korean companies. But their workers are every bit as American as the ones laboring on assembly lines in Detroit.

Frankly, I couldn’t give a hoot whether the person who built my car paid union dues.

What I care about is whether the car is a good value and will serve my family’s needs.

And that’s the criteria the state should use when making its purchases.

Ultimately, it should be a matter of what provides taxpayers with the best value.

Roadkill is serious business With an annual state budget of about $35 billion, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to strike $700,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources budget to dispose of roadkill deer isn’t likely to trigger a filibuster in the Legislature.

The Legislature’s budget committee last month voted to restore the $700,000 so the DNR could continue to reimburse local governments for the disposal costs, so this whole funding issue could end up a moot point.

The state has a vested interest in keeping roads clear of bloated deer carcasses. About 23,000 deer have been removed from state roadways in each of the past two years.

A state that wants to be

inviting to tourists isn’t doing itself any favors by leaving decaying whitetail carcasses lying around on the roadsides.

But local government officials also should see the importance of getting these unsightly carcasses out of sight as soon as possible, and municipalities have the manpower to handle the job.

Cities, counties and towns have road crews that plow snow in the winter, patch roads in the summer and perform other duties out and about. When a deer carcass is reported by police patrols or the public, those road workers should make it a point to respond and drag the carcass into the ditch or otherwise out of sight of motorists.

And if that’s not an option

on a busy thoroughfare, or wherever, workers can dispose of it in a proper location.

This really is “local control” at its core, and something as simple as getting rid of dead deer shouldn’t have to result in finger-pointing between state and local governments.

It also shouldn’t be a budget-buster for municipalities who have people on hand to keep roads clear and roadsides maintained. This job is just an extension of their current responsibilities, and not a huge one at that.

However this turns out, the key is prompt removal of the road kill.

At the bridge table, it can be a mistake not to make an honor-able play when one is available -- as in this deal. South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace. What should East discard?

North, with six-card support, should shut his eyes and bid four spades. Who knows who can make what? East wonders if his side can do well in a minor, especially as North’s jump to four spades suggests that West has some minor-suit cards, but the vulnerability is unfavorable. If East does bid, four no-trump should show both minors, not be Blackwood.

Note that five clubs can be made unless the defenders immediately take their three diamond tricks.

It is all right to discard a spotcard, but it is much better to signal with an honor-card -- partner won’t miss it. Here, East should pitch his club king, top of touching honors.

This makes it easy for West to cash another heart trick and the club ace before leading a second club for down one. On any other defense, declarer has at least 10 tricks: six spades and four diamonds.

True, if East discards the club eight before the club three, this ought to persuade West to shift to clubs. But why not make partner’s life easy?

Probiotics may help counter helpful bacteria Dear Doctor K: I took an antibiotic before having some dental work done. I ended up in the hospital with severe diarrhea caused by something called “C. diff.”

I was told it was a kind of bacteria, but aren’t antibiotics supposed to kill bacteria? Can you explain?

Dear Reader: You heard the doctors correctly: “C. diff” is shorthand for a bacterium known as Clostridium difficile.

It lives inside our intestines, along with trillions of other bacteria.

Normally, the harmful C. diff bacteria are far outnumbered by other bacteria in our intestines. These other bacteria keep C. diff under control.

For this reason, we’ll call them “good” bacteria.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff This can change dramatically when a person takes an antibiotic. Why? Just as there are many different types of bacteria, there also are many different kinds of antibiotics.

No single kind of antibiotic kills all types of bacteria.

Your doctor knew the kind of bacteria that grow in your mouth and can cause some people problems after dental work. You took the antibiotic he chose, and the potentially dangerous mouth bacteria were killed.

But the antibiotic traveled throughout your body. It

probably also killed some of the “good” bacteria in your intestine, while not killing C. diff – allowing C. diff to multiply like crazy.

In most cases, the result of a C. diff infection is a mild case of diarrhea that goes away quickly after the antibiotic treatment ends. But more severe cases can result in prolonged abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea and fever.

In some cases, diarrhea is so frequent that the person becomes dehydrated. Severe infections are more common in older people and in people who are hospitalized.

Treatment begins by stopping the antibiotic that triggered the C. diff in the first place. Then the doctor will prescribe another antibiotic

that does kill C. diff. But C. diff is a particularly hard kind of bacteria to kill. It has become resistant to some antibiotics – and it has the capacity to hide from them, lay low, and then cause a relapse.

A newer treatment approach transplants feces from a healthy person into the colon of a person with a C. diff infection. We’ve talked about that in this column before. As a result, the diseased intestine becomes repopulated with normal, healthy bacteria.

Until recently, a fecal transplant was done through an enema or a colonoscopy.

Neither is pleasant.

Late last year, researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital purified and froze fecal extracts.

They placed them into clean and odorless capsules that could be swallowed. It seems to work, and it’s safe.

In the future, if you must take an antibiotic, consider taking a “probiotic” as well.

Probiotics are living bacteria that you ingest to improve the balance of bacteria in your gut.

Yogurt, buttermilk, miso and soy beverages are all good sources of probiotics. You can also buy probiotics in pill form.

There is some evidence that probiotics may reduce the risk of developing C. diff if you take an antibiotic.
