MORRIS – Abbey Poole said she was woken by a neighbor pounding on her door in the early morning hours Monday, alerting her that her home was on fire.

“Our neighbors saved our life,” she said. “I’m very thankful. We are safe, the kids are safe. The car and house can be replaced.”

Poole’s husband Dan called 911 as the family exited the home with their daughters, 6 and 8, in tow.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District reported to 604 W. Washington St. after receiving a call at 3:24 a.m. about the fire. Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said in a news release that the first engine arrived within minutes from the downtown fire station.

Heavy fire at the rear exterior of the house was visible.

The engine extinguished a portion of the fire and remaining fire units arrived and entered the home, extinguishing the fire on the first floor, according to the news release.

Students learn about local nursery’s continuing tradition of donating trees

Coal City Elementary Principal Chris Spencer said Monday it’s a great experience for students.

“It’s great for the kids to be able to be part of planting the tree,” he said. “When they leave here and go to other schools they come back and see the tree they planted.”

Becky Thomas knows firsthand how it feels to have a child grow up and watch his or her tree grow with them. This year her son, Joey, who is an eighth-grade student at MVK, came out with his class to pose next to the tree they planted when they were in kindergarten.

Before planting the state tree, the White Oak, at Coal City Elementary, Jamie and Becky Thomas addressed seven classrooms of second-graders to see just how much they knew about trees.

They interacted with the

children to see if they could come up with five important things trees do for the environment and the humans living in it.

The children learned trees help save energy by providing shade, clean air, give animals a habitat, and that trees soak up the water to slow down soil erosion.

“How would you feel if you

went outside and there were no trees?” Becky Thomas asked the group of students.

One boy said they would be very hot without the shade.

They then learned the fifth fact – trees make people happy, leading them to a more enriched life.

Zander Meents, 8, of Coal City said he has planted trees before at his house, but his

favorite thing isn’t planting them.

“I like picking fruit off the tree,” he said. “Apples are my favorite.”

Alexa Wiltz, 7, of Coal City said she likes that trees are strong and don’t fall down easy.

She said when she gets older, she plans to come back and visit the tree they planted.

COAL CITY – Jamie and Becky Thomas love the environment and watching things grow.

In 1999 they opened Spring Grove Nursery in Mazon, which allowed them to take their passion for trees and turn it into a family business.

About 12 years ago they decided to annually start donating a tree near Arbor Day to Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Elementary School where their children attended class.

They’ve been doing it ever since.

“We started doing this with our kid’s classes for Arbor Day, and we saw how well the kids responded to learning about the environment. So we decided to do it with other schools within Grundy County,” Becky Thomas said.

Seven years ago, the Thomas family expanded the donation and to date have donated trees to several Grundy County school districts including Coal City, Gardner and Braceville and Immaculate Conception School in Morris.

This year the family donated trees to Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Elementary, Coal City Elementary, ICS and Seneca Elementary School. Together with Jamie’s brother, Chris Harford, and his wife Marlee, who operate tree-planting service itrees.com, they picked out and delivered the perfect tree for each school.

They start the planting on Arbor Day and continue into the next week to fit in the time to not just donate a tree, but to educate the students about Arbor Day. They also teach the kids about how a tree benefits them before they step outside and watch as kids scoop in a shovel full of a dirt until the tree is planted and ready to go.

By MIKE MALLORY MORRIS – After serving 34 years as an alderman in Morris, 2nd Ward Alderman Ken Sereno announced his resignation Monday night near the end of the council meeting.

“After considerable thought, I have come to the conclusion that 34 years is enough,” Sereno said. “Someone younger may have fresher ideas and enthusiasm.”

Sereno served under three mayors and in three city halls, seeing it grow from sharing the building to what it is today.

He’s seen the fire department go from sharing a city hall to having three buildings.

He spoke of the other progress in Morris during his time, such as Route 47 growing to four lanes, two 1-million-gallon water towers constructed and neighborhood businesses

“The Morris Hospital has been building continuously and adding doctors specializing in every sickness known.”

Sereno is regarded as a historian of Morris by his fellow aldermen and many people who know him.

“Anytime someone was on the same committee, they learned something from him,” 4th Ward Alderman Duane Wolfe said. “Meetings may have lasted longer than they should’ve, but we got a lot done.

His one-liners should’ve been written down.”

Mayor Richard Kopczick began serving as an alderman with Sereno in 1995.

“I’ve been fortunate to serve with you, Ken,” Kopczick said.

“A lot of people don’t know the

work you’ve put in to Morris.”

Kopczick said Sereno will be sorely missed by the other council members.

“He and his wife have done tremendous work in our community,” Kopczick said.

Kopczick saluted Sereno’s work with the Grundy County Historical Society and for his help setting up the city’s first youth center. Sereno also served on the Morris Downtown Development Partnership.

As for Sereno’s replacement, state statute says the position must be filled within 60 days. Kopczick will make a recommendation, which will be voted on by the City Council at a later date. The 2nd Ward’s leadership continues to change, after Doug Hayse was sworn in as 2nd Ward alderman Friday following a defeat of former Alderman Julian Houston in February’s election.

Grundy County filed a civil case in September 2013 against Halpin for the money he is accused of misappropriating from the county, and the recoupment of all wages and benefits that Halpin received during his alleged breach of duties as chairman and as a board member from 2008 to 2013 – a total of more than $200,000.

The civil case against Halpin was back in court last week where a judge denied Halpin’s defense’s request to have his legal council appointed as special assistant state’s attorneys, which would have required the county to pay for his defense.

In addition, his defense’s motion to dismiss also was denied, Kendall County Assistant State’s Attorney Nemura Pencyla said. Pencyla represents Grundy County in the case because the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office had a conflict of interest since it represents the Grundy County Board. The case is being heard in LaSalle County.

The defense argued if the Grundy office could not represent Halpin because it represents all of the County Board, then Halpin’s actions must have been while he was in an official capacity as a board member, therefore they should be appointed special assistants. The county argued his alleged actions were not exercised duties of a board member, but a claimant of per diem.

The judge sided with the county.

“They were given 28 days to file an answer,” Pencyla said.

Halpin’s attorney, Jeff Tomczak, said he intends to

file a motion to reconsider, and could appeal the most recent decisions. Morris attorney Mark Rigazio also represents Halpin.

Singled out

The civil lawsuit follows allegations raised years ago by now Board Chairman David Welter, a Republican. At that time, Welter – based on an investigation he did before being elected – accused Halpin, a Democrat, of receiving reimbursements for meetings he either did not attend or that never took place.

Appellate prosecutor Charles Colburn – who had been appointed to investigate any criminal acts by Halpin – said no criminal charges were discovered.

Colburn also reported that “it has also been determined that through errors and omissions at least one and perhaps more county board members have received funds in excess of those that should have been received. These funds are in excess of $5,000 and may be subject to collection,” he stated in a letter to the judge at that time.

Tomczak said Monday that Halpin has no issue with repaying money that he claims was inadvertently paid to him, but that other board members Colburn pointed out as also receiving excess funds should have to as well. No other charges or lawsuits have been filed against any other board members. “It raises the question of political prosecution,” Tomczak said.

Halpin, he said, would like to see the issue resolved across the board, including all who were paid in excess.

“We’re trying to kind of globally settle this issue. ...

If not, we can be getting into huge litigation,” Tomczak said.

Pencyla said there has been some “loose talk” of a proposed settlement, but nothing has been given to his office yet.

Welter declined to comment.

The next court date is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 19 in LaSalle County.

Grundy County now live streaming committee meetings

“When I was first elected, I said I wanted to increase transparency. It started with live streaming the County Board meetings, and now we have the technology needed to live stream committee meetings that take place here at the administration building,” Welter said.

Kristen Torkelson, technology supervisor for Grun-

dy County, said officials are in the process of providing training so the county employee who takes minutes at the meeting will be able to run the software required to live stream the event, pause it for executive session and restart it for any business that takes place after executive session.

Welter said in addition to live streaming the event, new software also would allow the public to go back and watch at any time any meeting video that was online. The public can access the videos by visiting the county’s website, grundyco.org, and clicking the link toward the top of the screen that says “Live! Board

Mtg.” From there, users will be routed to a meeting portal that lists all meetings that have recently taken place, and any new ones that are on the calendar.

Agendas, as well as board packets, can be accessed via the links after the meeting date, as well as a link to view the video. The county had its first trial run during the April 28 Technology and Elections Committee, where video was live streamed but an issue with sound was encountered.

Torkelson said staff have worked on the sound issues and should be ready to go live at the next committee meeting, which is the May 5 Leg-

3 French Hens to bring record number of vendors If you go

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Saturday marks the return of the 3 French Hens Country Market to downtown Morris, and organizers Monica Spence-Vogel and Traci Tessone announced a record number of vendors are set to participate this year.

A total of 140 vendors, 15 to 20 more than any previous year, are scheduled to attend.

The list includes artisans, farms with fresh produce, bakers, jewelry designers and others looking to sell one of a kinds, antiques and repurposed items, as well as homebaked and homegrown wares.

“We did hope it would grow to be this big,” Spence-Vogel said.

Marilyn was born on May 7, 1936, in Seneca, the daughter of Raymond and Anna Mae (Abraham) Wheeler.

She graduated from Seneca High School in 1954. Marilyn married Earl Albert Anderson in Stavanger Lutheran Church on November 10, 1956. They lived for 25 years in Sugar Grove. When her children were in school Marilyn worked as a librarian at their school. She was a longtime member of Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church in Aurora, Illinois.

The most important part of Marilyn’s life was her family and her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great

grandchildren. Marilyn was an avid Cubs fan, enjoyed crafts, making flower arrangements and cooking.

In 1998 her husband died and she moved to Fort Collins in 1999, where she has been a member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her son, Jeff (Kathy) Anderson of Marco Island, FL; her daughter, Sue Montey of Fort Collins; one sister, Dorothy Buck of Seneca; one brother, Raymond Wheeler of Florissant, MO; five grandchildren, Scott Anderson, Stefanie Irwin, Nicole, Kelsey and Travis Montey; three great grandchildren, Ava and Gavin Irwin and Connor Anderson.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Earl.

‘Star Trek’ Oscar-winning writer of ‘Dances With Wolves’ novel, Michael Blake, dies at 69 actress The ASSOCIATED PRESS TUCSON, Ariz. – Michael Blake, the writer whose novel “Dances With Wolves” became a major hit movie and earned him an Academy Award for the screenplay, has died.

Blake, 69, died Saturday in Tucson, Arizona, after a long battle with cancer, his business partner, Daniel Ostroff, said.

Blake, who wrote several novels, is best known for “Dances With Wolves,” which he wrote while broke at the urging of his longtime friend, the actor Kevin Costner. The novel was fairly unsuccessful, but it became a film after Costner asked Blake to adapt it into a movie. The book went on to sell 3.5 million copies after the success of the movie.

“Dances With Wolves,” a Civil War epic about Army lieutenant who befriends a Native American tribe, won seven Academy Awards, including one for Blake for best adapted screenplay.

Despite his success, Blake was a humble man who passionately advocated for many causes, including literacy, Native American history and the disappearing of wild horses in the West, said his wife, Marianne Mortensen Blake.

He attended the University of New Mexico, but he left before graduating. The university now has an archive of his work at the student newspaper and other writings, Ostroff said.

Ostroff met Blake in 1988 and has worked with him on several occasions. He and Mortensen Blake are now bringing to life the sequel to “Dances With Wolves,” a novel Blake wrote called “The Holy Road.”

“In my experience, great visionary writers like Michael are often ahead of Hollywood and ahead of the audience by a generation. I think the best Michael Blake film adaptations are yet to come,” Ostroff said.

Blake’s most famous work, “Dances With Wolves,” came at the urging of Costner, whom Blake befriended when he was a relatively unknown actor. Blake spent the next several years living out his car and on friends’ couches while he wrote the novel that would become one of the most successful and well-received movies of the decade.

LOS ANGELES – Grace Lee Whitney, who played Captain Kirk’s assistant on the original “Star Trek” series, has died.

She was 85.

Whitney died of natural causes Friday in her home in the Central California town of Coarsegold, about 50 Grace Lee miles north of Fresno, her Whitney son Jonathan Dweck said on Sunday.

Whitney played Yeoman Janice Rand in the first eight episodes before being written out of the series. In her 1998 autobiography “The Longest Trek: My Tour of the Galaxy,” she wrote that her acting career largely came to an end and she became an alcoholic.

She wrote that she struggled with her addiction for many years before getting treatment and regaining her career with the help of Leonard Nimoy, who starred as Spock in the series.

Dweck said his mother would have liked to be remembered more as a successful survivor of addiction than for her “Star Trek” fame. She dedicated the last 35 years of her life helping people with addiction problems, some of whom she met at “Star Trek” conventions, he said.

10 Parts of Route 47 dedicated to fallen Morris officers MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Illinois House of Representatives will move forward with honoring two Morris officers killed in the line of duty in the late 1800s and mid 1900s.

The officers will be honored by designating portions of Route 47 in their honor, State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, said in a news release.

The officers are Marshal Enoch T. Hopkins, who was shot and killed in 1878 while trying to apprehend two men in downtown Morris; and Patrolman Clarence Roseland, who was shot and killed in 1935 after interrupting a robbery in progress at Gable’s Grocery Store on the 800 block of Liberty Street.

HJR 71 designates the portion of Route 47 over Interstate 80 from Romines Drive to Route 6 East as the Marshal Enoch T. Hopkins Memorial Road.

HJR 72 designates the portion of Route 47 over the Illinois River bridge from Pine Bluff Road to Washington

Street as the Patrolman Clarence Roseland Memorial Road.

Anthony’s legislation directs the Illinois Department of Transportation to erect appropriate signs giving notice of the names designating each portion.

The request to honor the men was made by Morris Police Chief Brent Dite, following Anthony’s successful initiative earlier this spring to honor the late Morris Firefighter James Allen, killed in the line of duty in 1985, by designating a portion of Route 47 in his name.

“The men and women of our police and fire departments – past and present – deserve recognition for putting their lives on the line for us each and every day,” Anthony said in the release. “By designating a portion of Route 47 in honor of Enoch Hopkins and Clarence Roseland, we help to keep their memory alive and give the family of these brave officers’ the enduring appreciation of the Morris community for which they gave their lives.”

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers Board of Directors has installed new officers for the 2015-16 term. Kelly Beaty of Morris is the new board chairman, succeeding Mike Rittof, who has served on the board for 12 years.

Rittof remains on the board as immediate past president.

Additional officers are Rodney Engstrom, Kelly Beaty Seneca, vice chairman; Barry Narvick, Morris, secretary; and Brian Angwin, Morris, treasurer.

Beaty is president of Standard Bank and Trust. He has served on the Morris Hospital Board since 2004 and was trea-

surer in 2011-12 and vice chair in 2013-14, according to a news release from the hospital.

Within the community, Beaty also serves as president of the Morris Police Pension Board and president of the Fireman’s Pension Board. He is a current facilitator for Operation St. Nick. Previously, he was a board member of the United Way of Grundy County and Grundy Economic Development Council and a member of the Morris Rotary.

“I have lived and worked in this community for 31 years, and during that time have come to realize how important Morris Hospital is to me personally and to our community,” Beaty said in the release.

Board vice chairman Engstrom is a retired superintendent from Seneca High School, where he also was a teacher, coach and business manager.

Engstrom was elected to the Hospital Board in 2007. He also serves on the Morris Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and is past president of Our Savior Lutheran Church Council.

Secretary Narvick is a lifelong resident of Morris and owner of Narvick Brothers Lumber Company Inc. He has served on the Morris Hospital Board since 2008. Narvick also serves on the board of the Morris Planning Commission, Will Grundy Industry Advancement, and Will Grundy County Contractors Association.

Angwin is plant manager at LyondellBasell’s Morris manufacturing site. A native of Michigan, Angwin moved to Morris in 2012 from Clinton, Iowa, where he was plant manager of a similarly sized LyondellBasell site. He has served on the Hospital Board

since 2014. Angwin’s previous community involvement has included service on school boards, a community college board, and the board of directors at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton.

The Board is made up of 12 volunteer members who live in the communities served by the hospital. No excuse for IRS’ frequent hangups More than 8 million times during the past few months, the Internal Revenue Service’s telephone system hung up on taxpayers who wanted help. Only 40 percent of those whose calls did get through were able to talk to a human being. Many of them had to endure more than half an hour on hold before that happened. Members of Congress who heard that report from IRS Commissioner John Koskinen last month were furious. They should be.

According to an investigation by the House Ways and Means Committee, the IRS diverted $134 million spent on customer service in 2014

to other purposes this year.

Much of the money was spent so the IRS could administer provisions of the Obamacare law. One lawmaker, U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, R-South Dakota, accused Koskinen of “purposely harming taxpayers.”

Well, it certainly sounds that way. The only plausible alternative is IRS officials were so eager to make President Barack Obama’s pet program look efficient they spent every dime they could on it – knowing the impact that would have on customer service. Either way, the IRS does not look good.

Tough times for Ill. lawmakers, taxpayers The new legislative “working groups” designed to hammer out compromises on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda” finally began meeting in secret last week. At least one of them got a bit heated.

A working group tasked with writing ethics legislation hit a brick wall right off the bat when it came time to discuss Rauner’s term limits constitutional amendment.

Two Democrats on the committee reportedly said there was plenty of time to deal with the amendment next year, since it couldn’t be placed onto the ballot until November of 2016.

Nope, said the administration representative, according to sources. The governor wants that amendment passed by the end of the spring legislative session. When he was met with stiff resistance, the administration official report-

edly became agitated and more than implied that if the constitutional amendment isn’t passed by May 31, then the governor would not support any revenue increases to patch next fiscal year’s massive $6 billion hole. The Democrats were shocked. Would the governor really threaten to crash the entire government over a term limits bill? Yep. And that message was apparently sent to pretty much all of the working groups last week. Pass this stuff or deal with the horrific consequences of allowing the temporary income tax hike to partially expire. The governor has repeatedly said that he fully intends to take advantage of the budget crisis in order to push his agenda through the General Assembly. And he has made no bones about what he wants. Term limits have been

So, the threat shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise. Still, there were some thunderstruck Democrats last week. Every poll has shown that the public is wildly enthusiastic about term limits. But legislators? Not so much. There are sound policy arguments against the simplistic solution, including the danger that it would empower experienced lobbyists and staff even more than they already are. Still, the idea’s popularity means that if it’s put on the floor for a final vote, legislators will be placed in a highly uncomfortable position and

many will have to vote for the thing – so they absolutely don’t want to be backed into that corner.

Not everything went horribly. The ethics working group, for instance, eventually decided to skip over term limits for now in order to prevent a meltdown. They plan to take up a proposal to codify one of the governor’s executive orders on state employee ethics, which is viewed as pretty much a no-brainer.

And there’s apparently even room for compromise on the term limits amendment, insiders say. One reported Rauner fallback position is to apply the limits only to newly elected legislators, perhaps sometime down the road.

But even if they can reach an accord on all of the governor’s proposal, they will still have to deal with the horren-

dous budget deficit. One of the smartest people I know at the Statehouse took me aside the other day and confided he was alarmed about the coming problem.

The budget hole is estimated to be at least $6 billion. But, this person said, let’s just say that Rauner agrees to $3 billion in tax hikes along with $3 billion in cuts. How the heck does he get that turkey passed? The GA spent weeks fighting over a mere $26 million in cuts to this fiscal year’s budget. Who will vote to cut $3 billion? And what Democrat will vote to raise taxes by $3 billion when that means another $3 billion will have to be cut?

Tough times ahead.

Morris’ Patterson to play basketball at Kishwaukee

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Back on January 15, Morris lost a boys basketball game at home to DeKalb on a 3-pointer by the Barbs in the final seconds.

The end result of the game wasn’t what mattered to Kishwaukee Community College basketball coach Rob Buss, who was in attendance. What did matter was the performance of Morris senior guard Austin Patterson. Patterson, who cracked the 1,000-point mark for his career this season, hit nine 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 27 points.

He also caught the eye of Buss, who saw him play a couple of more times afterward.

That interest turned to be mutual, as Patterson recently committed to play for Kishwaukee next year. “[Buss] came to see one of our games – the DeKalb game at home – and he started to talk to me after that and gave me some information about the college,” Patterson said. “I went up to visit their campus and got the tour. Then I went to a couple of their open gyms for basketball and I liked the way they do things.

“They are very assertive and organized in the way they do things. It reminds me a lot of what we did here at the high school, so I think I should be able to fit in pretty well.”

It doesn’t hurt that the 6-foot-3 Patterson, who reached the state finals in the Country Financial 3-Point Showdown the last two years, can play both the shooting guard and small forward positions.

“They graduated their 2, 3 and 4 from last year’s team,” Patterson said. “They want me to play either 2 or 3, so I think I have a pretty good shot at getting some playing time.”

Patterson led Morris in scoring this past season with a 17.6 points a game and was also the team’s leading rebounder at 6.1.

“With his basketball talent and work ethic on the court, I don’t see how Austin can fail,” Morris boys basketball coach Joe Blumberg said. “No college would turn down a guy

Malta, just west of DeKalb, advanced to the NJCAA Tournament in Danville in the winter. The Kougars beat Lansing Community College, 82-68, in their first game before losing to Des Moines Area Community College, 72-63, and to Schoolcraft College, 81-74. They finished the season with a 29-7 record.

“I saw a game that Kishwaukee played in the national tournament,” Blumberg said.

I want to get my core courses out of the way at Kishwaukee.”

Joliet’s Scott Koerner rolls to first STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – Scott Koerner pulled up alongside leader D.J. Weltmeyer and gave him the thumbs-up during a yellow flag situation with two laps remaining in Friday night’s season-opening late-model feature at Grundy County Speedway.

“I was just happy to be in the top three,” Koerner said.

“I gave him the thumbs uplike, ‘I’m not even going to try to pass him unless something crazy happens.’ ” On the drop of the green, Weltmeyer’s steering went away and he rode up toward the wall in Turns 1 and 2.

The door on the bottom was wide open.

“He slipped up enough that I thought, ‘I’m going to be an idiot if I don’t take this chance,’ ” Koerner said.

Two laps later, Koerner had the first late-model win of his career.

The Joliet native held off Larry Schuler to claim the win. John Nutley was third,

while Weltmeyer wrestled his car around the oval for fourth.

Billy Knippenberg and Jeremy Spoonmore completed the top six.

Koerner’s win came at the end of a wild final few laps.

Eddie Hoffman was leading Dave Gentile by a short margin, with Weltmeyer in third, when a yellow flag set up the first green-white-checkered attempt. At the drop of the green, Gentile dug his No. 6 into the back of Hoffman and rode him through Turns 1 and 2.

Gentile got underneath Hoffman on the back straightaway, but as the two tangled and moved up, Weltmeyer tried to squeeze under an opening on the bottom. The resulting collision ended in another yellow, with Hoffman and Gentile being sent to the back.

Hoffman roared back in the second late-model feature, winning the 30-lap event over Schuler, Gentile, Knippenberg, Nutley and Chris Cooling.

Kevin Gentile celebrated his 21st birthday in grand fashion by winning both 25-lap Mid-American features.

The first one came with controversy three laps from the finish, as he and Tommy Knippenberg collided in Turn 4 while battling for the lead.

Only Knippenberg was sent to the back.

Gentile went on to beat Joe Vinachi by three car-lengths, while Kenny Benson, Matt Clemens and Luke Baldwin followed.

In the second feature, Gentile and John Ventrello were 1-2, with Kevin Murphy third.

Cheryl Hryn and then Rita Fields led for most of the laps, but John Senerchia prevailed in the street stock main over Tim Stewart and Jake Bradley.

In the second street stock main, Hryn survived late challenges from Darrell Gay and Senerchia, and then took the checkered flag ahead of Christy Penrod. Senerchia was third and Fields fourth.

In the second 4-cylinder feature females finished 1-2 with Alex Gay holding off a hard charging Heather Page, with Dan Schmeissing rounding out the top three.

Matt Houchin was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Seneca, while Michael Rhodes, C.J. Pasdertz, Lars Pihl (3 RBIs), Brody Harty (RBI) and winning pitcher Brandon Viken (triple, 2 RBIs) each had two hits. Viken went the distance, allowing just four hits and striking out nine.

Keith keeps to big plays, few words

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com The spotlight was literally on Patrick Kane after his game-breaking goal with 19.9 seconds left in the second period Sunday night. He was the one who scored the goal, after all.

He was the one who sniped the puck past Devan Dubnyk on the far side, who fistpumped so hard his helmet was jarred loose, who is known as “Showtime” for a reason.

Duncan Keith was some 100 feet away. But once he got his helmet on straight, Kane immediately looked for Keith off in the distance, pointing and saying something to the effect of “Nice pass!” Perhaps with a colorful word or two mixed in.

Because it was Keith who made the play happen, one-timing a sensational tape-

to-tape stretch pass from the top of the circle in his own zone, between three players, right to a waiting Kane at the far blue line. The vision it took to see the play develop, and the skill it took to make such a perfect pass, are hard to fathom.

“What was amazing about that is just how it stayed flat the whole time,” Kane said.

“Just a great flat pass right on my stick.”

For a two-time Norris Trophy winner who’ll likely be enshrined in both the United Center rafters and the Hockey Hall of Fame someday, the spotlight doesn’t always find Keith.

And that’s perfectly fine with him. If there’s one thing Duncan Keith doesn’t like talking about, it’s Duncan Keith.

Fortunately, Keith’s teammates are always eager to talk

on his behalf.

“He’s been great, and it’s nice that he’s getting some recognition,” Patrick Sharp said. “I know he’s looked upon league-wide as a top defenseman. We think he’s the best in the league, along with a couple of other guys on our team.

It’s nice that those guys can get some credit, because they do so much for us on the back end.”

Keith has two goals and eight assists through eight playoff games so far, all while logging nearly 30 minutes a night – a number slightly inflated by the superhuman 46:19 he played in a triple-overtime victory over Nashville in Game 4 of the first round.

He mans the point on the power play, kills penalties, double-shifts 5-on-5 and is a menace at both ends of the ice.

After a solid if unspectacular

regular season – at least, by Keith’s lofty standards – the indefatigable 31-year-old is starting to look a lot like the guy who was unstoppable and unbeatable during the 2013 Stanley Cup run.

Michal Rozsival always knew Keith was good. But it wasn’t until he started playing alongside him over the past couple of months that he realized just how good.

You’d think it would be easier to play alongside a perennial All-Star.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Just try to keep up.

Niklas Hjalmarsson is the Hawks’ top defensive defenseman, drawing the toughest assignments on most nights while skating behind Jonathan Toews’ line. That frees up Keith to get more favorable matchups offensively.
