Home is where your heart is MORRIS – Shortly after I started working for the United Way of Grundy County in September 2010, I was asked how I liked my new job.

I always replied then the same way I would still reply today – “I’m home.”

I have worked in the nonprofit sector for more than 25 years at a few local nonprofit agencies before coming to the United Way. Through the years working for agencies, I have learned of the many struggles nonprofits go through to provide programs and services. They rely on state, federal and local support to provide programs and services in Grundy County.

My previous work with local agencies, I feel, gives me a greater understanding of what these agencies endure on a daily basis in order to meet the needs of those they help.

In the nearly five years I’ve been at the United Way of Grundy County, I have seen the difference our efforts make in the community. The United Way of Grundy County supports local agencies by awarding grants annually, so they can help those who live in our community. There are

COMMUNITY PULSE KAREN NALL 29 local nonprofit agencies that receive funding from our United Way. The funding to these agencies comes from the generosity of individuals, businesses, companies and their employees through our annual fundraising campaign.

The money raised by our United Way stays local. More than $380,000 is awarded annually to local nonprofit agencies, which provide vital programs and services to more than 38,000 Grundy County residents.

I am so proud that due to the overwhelming support of the community, we have exceeded our campaign goal for the last three years. The surplus funds raised went right back into the community through mini-grants to local nonprofit agencies. The additional funds raised also enabled our United Way to provide funding and support for the relief efforts for those affected by the 2013 flood and

tornado disasters. In total, nearly $105,000 in additional funding went right back into the community because of the generous support of our donors. These successes are just one of the many reasons I am so grateful to have a job where I know what I do makes a positive impact for others.

Some people may wonder why a single mom of two daughters would work for a nonprofit as opposed to a for-profit company. For me, it’s simple: Working in the nonprofit field is truly a rewarding experience.

Being a part of an organization that makes a difference for families, children, seniors and the community is something that makes me very proud.

The other thing that makes me grateful for the years of my career in the nonprofit field, is the positive impact it has made on my daughters.

They both have grown to be compassionate, giving young adults who always are looking to help others. They say home is where your heart is. For me, working for the United Way of Grundy County is “home.” I am doing something I am truly passionate about, helping to make a difference for others,

and carrying that on to my children who will one day do the same for others. One of my most favorite quotes is by D. Elton Trueblood: “It takes a noble man to plant a seed for a tree that will some day give shade to people he never met.”

The United Way of Grundy County has been providing support in the community since 1946. Grundy County is a great community where people help one another in times of need. I think as a community, everyone in Grundy County works together to not only plant those seeds, but also keeps them nourished so they continue to grow, which is what makes Grundy County a great place to live and work.

“I knew I was suffering from a little hearing loss, but I wanted to have my hearing checked to confirm what I already knew. This testing was very beneficial,” Varland said.

Sunday, the Morris Lions Club sponsored free hearing bus exams in the parking lot of First Midwest Bank. Morris Lions Club member and chairman of the event MaryJane Gillespie said the hearing bus had not been in Morris for about 10 years.

The club had some extra funds and thought the hearing bus would be beneficial, member Judy Miller said.

“We do a candy drive in October at Wal-Mart, and the money raised during that time is used for projects. We had a good year last year, and we thought this hearing bus would be a great project for the Morris Lions Club,” Miller said.

Lion’s Club member Joanne Johnson said she has been a recipient of the testing, and it was an eye-opening experience.

“One year my husband said if he had to go get his hearing tested, then I had to go, too. We both took the test, and come to find out he passed, and I didn’t.

I was the one with the hearing loss and had no idea,” Johnson said.

With 15 to 20 percent of participants suffering from moderate to profound hearing loss, Lions of Illinois Foundation Hearing Technician Joe Krenkel feels the Lions Club hearing bus is an asset to those in the community.

UP CLOSE Spring on the Farm Spring on the farm is a time of change and new life.

As the temperatures rise the farmer gets busy readying fields and planting crops, in Grundy County that typically means corn and soybeans.

New life starts to show up in the pastures and the barns as mother cats give birth to new litters and calves stumble to their feet for the first time, under the watchful eye of their moms and farmers.

The mayor also pointed out the conversion of all the city’s street lights downtown to LED, which was a cost-saving measure for the city.

The city shared more than $2.1 million tax dollars to assist local schools and other taxing bodies, in another attempt to keep residents’ taxes lower, Kopczick said.

Phase II at Deer Ridge Park was completed, and the city hopes to complete Phase III this year, as well as adding a

dog park to Lion’s Park.

The city will bring new funds with the creation of TIF II, also known as the Marina TIF District, to aid the development of the Marina Project.

The addition of a canine unit to the Morris Police Department and a new threeyear contract with the police officers union highlight advancements in protection of the city.

Kopczick said the city has been working with Costco over the last year on an annexation agreement for the 140

acres adjacent to the existing facility for a new development bringing jobs to the city.

The city continues to work on an intergovernmental agreement with Grundy County and the Village of Minooka for Brisbin Road improvements north of Interstate 80, making sure developers cover the costs of road improvements.

To further stimulate the economy, Morris Municipal Airport is starting work May 18 to add 500 feet to its 5,000 foot runway, making Morris

more desirable for corporations, Kopczick said.

Morris firefighter Jeff Wilson said he came over to get tested, even though he wasn’t too worried about his hearing.

“I wasn’t too worried, but I wanted to check because it’s good information to know.

You may think you don’t have hearing loss, but you might.

They did a good job and I will definitely have my hearing checked again next time they are around,” Wilson said.

Gillespie said the screening was open to almost any age, except those under preschool age, and with instant results, it makes it a quick process.

“With parental consent, children as young as preschool age are welcome, and then of course, adults can be any age.

And, the big benefit is that the results are immediate, so if there are any problems, we can recommend further action,” Gillespie said.

One of the youngest to be tested was Morris resident, and daughter of Morris Lion’s Club member Paula Newsom,

12-year-old Avery Newsom.

Avery was not scared to do the test, and passed with flying colors.

“It was fun to do. It wasn’t scary at all. I liked trying to listen to the beeps to see if I am deaf or not,” Avery said.

After the three to five minute test is complete, Krenkel then shares and explains the results to the participant, using a scale of hearing loss form. If any further testing is needed, he recommends seeing an audiologist and physician, or otolaryngologist which is an ear, nose and throat doctor.

According to the Lion’s Club event news release, there are nearly 720,000 hearing impaired persons in Illinois alone, making it one of the most common chronic disabilities. Of these hearing impaired, 106,000 are deaf, with 26,000 deaf before the age of 19.

Miller said donating to the candy day fundraiser in October is a great way to fund free community services, like the hearing bus. Students take yellow brick road to prom

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – The Morris Community High School gymnasium boasted a yellow brick road Saturday afternoon, over which a parade of young men and women dressed to the nines strutted their stuff.

Prom was this weekend and the annual prom walk was held just before the big event.

The walk gives family and friends a chance to see the couples all dressed up and at their fashion best.

The theme this year was, “A Night in the Emerald City,” after the movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” Encircling the gym floor was a large oval mat painted with yellow rectangles, representing the yellow brick road. Principal Kelly Hussey said the Winterguard donated its old tarps that were used to make the distinctive runway.

“Everything is going fantastic,” Class of 2016 sponsor Laura Wills said midway through the event. “All the kids at Morris High School represent us so well, and I couldn’t be more proud of my students. ... They did so much more than classes have done in the past.”

The school’s proms are organized by each year’s junior class. Wills said they start their freshman year and work for three years on organizing and fundraising.

The students took a turn around the gym, stopped here and there for snapshots, then boarded the buses for the big event. In all, there were 344 students going and 20 chaperones.

Walking the runway, the girls were classy and sassy, and the boys dapper in their tuxedos and ties.

Friends Ian Bashor, a senior, and Autumn See, a junior, said they were excited about going to prom. See’s floor-length dress was of gold sequins, and her shoes were gold high-heeled platforms.

“My mom put the whole thing together,” she said.

Bashor sported a black tux with a gold vest and tie and said he was looking forward to the food the most. “It should be good,” he said with a smile.

Seniors Jocelyn Matamoras and Thomas Dabney chose pink for their color. Matamoras said the event was going to be a nice way for the upperclassmen to have some fun all together.

Cowboy boots were the footwear of choice for some of the prom-goers, including Jared Hendricks, Katheryn Johnson and Libby Ostrem. Hendricks even wore a cowboy hat.

“It’s just something we felt like we should do,” Johnson said. “It’s fun. It’s my personality.”

“I came from a long line of

hillbillies,” Hendricks said.

All in all, there were the normal hitches of the prom walk – a few mishaps involving high heels and the long trains of gowns being stepped on, one just as the young woman began her walk around the

gym. When she wasn’t going anywhere, she realized a foot was inadvertently standing on her train.

Senior Lildaryl James’ mother, Tiffany Guyton, and father, Daryl James, attended to see their son. He was

attending prom with a group of friends. Guyton said she thought he would probably miss school after graduation.

She was a little sentimental.

“He told me, ‘Thank you for making me the man that I am,’ ” she said.

David Goldberg, tech exec, dies at 47 Crime, mystery writer

Ruth Rendell dies at 85

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO – David Goldberg, a popular Silicon Valley executive and husband of Facebook second-in-command and “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg, has died suddenly at age 47, his company and family members said Saturday.

Goldberg was CEO of online survey questionnaire provider SurveyMonkey. He died Friday night, the company said in a statement on its website.

Family members also reported the death, via postings on Facebook. Neither the company nor family released a cause or other details about his death. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told The New York Times that Goldberg died while he was on vacation abroad with his wife.

“Dave Goldberg was an amazing person, and I am glad I got to know him,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family.”

In an interview last month, Goldberg told the news site Business Insider of maxing out his credit cards in the early 1990s to fund one of his first Internet ventures, a music

Goldberg’s brother asked on Facebook for friends and families to post their memories on David Goldberg’s Facebook page. Tributes rolled in from people who wrote of meeting him during his long tech career.

Santa pelted with snow at ’68 Eagles game dies

By RON TODT The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – The fill-in Santa whose downfield jaunt at a Philadelphia Eagles game in 1968 lives on in sports history for the hail of snowballs and shower of boos that rained down on him has died.

Frank Olivo was 66.

Olivo died early Thursday at a suburban hospital after a long battle with heart disease, diabetes and other ailments, said his cousin, Richard Monastra.

The story of Olivo’s misfor-

tune has long been held up as a symbol of Philly sports fans’ ferocity, but far from minding his moment in sports history, Olivo “gloried in it,” Monastra said.

“It was his 15 minutes of fame. He kind of liked it, actually,” he said.

The snowy onslaught began with the real Santa Claus stuck in New Jersey and unable to make it to the final game of the season between the Minnesota Vikings and a moribund Eagles team that started the year with 11 straight losses.

Olivo, who was in the

stands wearing a Santa suit and fake white beard, was asked to fill in.

But when he ran downfield past a row of elf-costumed “Eaglettes” and the team’s 50-person brass band playing “Here Comes Santa Claus,” thunderous boos erupted from the crowd of 54,535 and snowballs began raining down.

The halftime behavior during the team’s final home game, broadcast around the country on Howard Cosell’s national sports show, helped cement Philadelphia’s reputation for rowdy sports fans.

LONDON – Mystery writer Ruth Rendell, who brought psychological insight and social conscience to the classic British detective story, has died at the age of 85.

Publisher Penguin Random House said Rendell – best known for the Inspector Wexford series of novels – died Saturday morning in London. The cause of death was not announced, but Rendell had suffered a serious stroke in January.

Gail Rebuck, chair of Penguin Random House U.K., said Rendell had Ruth Rendell been “an insightful and elegant observer of society” whose work “highlighted the causes she cared so deeply about.”

“Ruth was a great writer, a campaigner for social justice, a proud mother and grandmother, a generous and loyal friend and probably the best-read person I have ever met,” Rebuck said.

Rendell was one of Britain’s most popular crime novelists and wrote dozens of books, including many under the pen name Barbara Vine. She also was a major influence on other writers.

Stephen King tweeted that her death was “a huge loss.”

Born Ruth Grasemann in London in 1930, Rendell began her career as a journalist on a local newspaper.

The author was appointed to the House of Lords by Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Labour government in 1997, becoming Baroness Rendell of Babergh.

She took the work seriously, attending afternoon sessions in Parliament after she had finished her morning writing. She was especially involved in the fight to stop female genital mutilation, Rebuck said.

Her friend and fellow mystery novelist P.D. James, who died last year, also sat in the Lords, as a Conservative.

Rendell lived for years in the scenic Little Venice neighborhood of London, surrounded by canals and colorful houseboats. But the pleasant environment did not alter her hard-eyed view of human nature.

“I don’t think the world is a particularly pleasant place,” Rendell said. “It is, of course, for some people.

But it is a hard place, and I don’t think it’s being cynical to say that.”

Rendell was conscious of the strong feelings many of her readers had for Wexford, her most famous creation.

“With a series character like Wexford, people do regard him as a real person that they become extremely attached to,” she said.

“Women have written to me over the years and said that they were in love with him and would I kill his wife because they’d like to marry him.”

The same year, she told an audience at the Cheltenham Literary Festival that she shied away from writing about child murder for fear that writing about it might in some way show criminals how to do it.

“I would rather not be involved, rather not be responsible,” she said.

The same concerns kept her from writing about cruelty to animals.

Seneca students win FFA recognition MORRIS HERALD–NEWS

SENECA – Feenix Hartell and Samantha Groth were selected as the State FFA Proficiency Winners in Equine Science Placement and Nursery Operations.

The students are members of the Seneca FFA Chapter of the Illinois Association FFA, according to a news release from Seneca FFA. Illinois FFA recognizes students in 52 different areas based on their work-based learning, also known as Supervised Agriculture Experiences.

FFA members who demonstrate outstanding agricultural skills and competencies

through record keeping, leadership and scholastic achievement may be considered for this award. SAEs allow students to learn by doing by either owning and operating an agricultural business, working or serving an internship at an agriculture-based business or conducting an agriculture-based scientific experiment and reporting results.

The girls were selected as state winners by a committee of agriculture industry representatives and teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area. Hartell is employed at Coyote Junction Equestrian Center south of Seneca and Groth works at Ganz Green-

house in Marseilles. Hartell is the daughter of Heather Hartell. Groth is the daughter of Steven and Jennifer Groth.

Seneca rolls to a pair of softball wins

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com SENECA – When all phases of the game are working correctly, that’s a good sign for a team, no matter what the sport.

That was the case Saturday morning as Seneca cruised to a 10-2 nonconference win over Princeton.

The Fighting Irish (18-9) collected 10 hits, stole five bases and made only one error in the field in a solid all-around victory. After Taylor Bushman held Princeton scoreless in the top of the first inning, Seneca staked her to a quick lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Jenni Nugent drove in Karlie Cade with an RBI single, then scored on an RBI double by Lexi Trompeter. An out later, an RBI single by Michaela Couglin brought home Trompeter for a 3-0 lead.

Princeton struck back for two runs in the top of the second. With one out, Alisa Holmbeck singled, and a walk to Madyson Cain put runners on first and second. Holmbeck stole third and, when the throw went wide, scored to make it 3-1.

Briike Hieronymus singled to put runners on first and third, and a wild pitch allowed Cain to score and cut the Seneca lead to 3-2. It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth.

Bushman led off by reaching on an error, and Paige Hacker bunted to move her to second.

The throw was wide of first, sending Bushman to third and Hacker to second. Cade then bunted back to the pitcher and was thrown out at first. Lyda Robinson followed with a double to left that scored both runners for a 5-2 lead.

After Robinson went to third on a passed ball, Nugent grounded to short. The throw came home, but Robinson beat it to make it 6-2.

“It took a little while for us to get the bats going,” Seneca coach Don Stecken said. “But once we did, we kept it up. We have 10 girls hitting .300 or better, so we don’t really have to rely on three or four girls

On senior night on Thursday, the Morris boys tennis team went out and staged a 5-0 victory against Rochelle.

Posting wins at singles for Morris were junior Jon Smyk and freshman Peter Smyk.

Winning at doubles were senior Chris Chaidez and junior Matt Borgstrom, senior David Carlos and junior Brian Haldorson, and junior Jorge Gutierrez and junior Brandon Vasques.

CLEVELAND – Pau Gasol’s voice gained some excitement to it Sunday when he was discussing the attitude of his Bulls teammates going into that Game 6, 54-point beat-down of the Milwaukee Bucks to close out the series last Thursday.

“It’s about preparation, mental preparation,” Gasol said, when asked why the Bulls have been so up and down from an emotional standpoint throughout the season. “Get yourself to that mental state where you just follow through when the game comes. I think that’s just individual and collective work that needs to be done prior to the game [Monday].”

A game that Gasol feels is a tone-setter.

It’s been well-documented over the last week of how the No. 2 seeded Cavaliers will be without Kevin Love for the rest of the playoffs, as

well as down a J.R. Smith for the first two games because of a suspension by the league for throwing a punch in the Game 4 sweep of the Celtics.

And while Gasol wasn’t to see the Bulls come out with an aggressiveness that seems to come and go, coach Tom Thibodeau warned that the aggressiveness needs to be there, but at the same time don’t expect the Cavs to play like a short-handed team.

“Love obviously is a great player,” Thibodeau said.

“But when you have a guy like LeBron [James] who can play every position and then you have a bunch of guys who can play multiple positions, so they can put a guy like James Jones in there, they can put a [Shawn] Marion in there, Mike Miller, those are guys with a lot of experience. They’ll eventually get J.R. back. They have a lot of shooting. They have two guys who can break you down off the dribble. LeBron can post.

Kyrie [Irving] can post some.

Because of Kyrie and LeBron being so dynamic, they make those other guys very effective.

“We can’t go in with the approach that Love is out so they’re shorthanded.

They’re not. You look at the year [Tristan] Thompson and [Timofey] Mozgov has had since he’s been there, those are two terrific bigs, very, very talented. And they fit their team very well.”

So does Thibodeau try and lock down James and Irving, making the rest of the Cavs beat them or let James and Irving get theirs, making sure the rest of the roster is silenced?

“If you overcommit [to stopping James and Irving], you’re going to open up a lot of other things,” Thibodeau said. “But you also have to make sure that they’re not just running freely because they can beat you by themselves. It’s a combination of the two.”

2016, yes, it’s early, but pay attention now It’s conventional wisdom that the 2016 Republican presidential race is at such an early stage that the polls don’t matter. They’re just a measurement of name recognition at this point, some observers say, and the only people really paying attention to the campaign are reporters and hard-core party activists.

Look at the recent CNN/ ORC poll. First of all, it’s a huge field, and no candidate dominates – Jeb Bush is in the lead with just 17 percent.

But nearly all the respondents surveyed have picked a candidate to support; add together every candidate’s little share of the vote and the total nears 100 percent, with few undecided.

There’s Bush’s 17 percent, followed by Scott Walker with 12 percent; then Rand Paul and Marco Rubio with 11 percent each; Mike Huckabee with 9 percent; Ted Cruz with 7 percent; Ben Carson and Chris Christie with 4 percent each; Rick Perry and Rick Santorum with 3 percent each; and Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, Bobby Jindal and John Kasich with 2 percent each.

Then there are 5 percent who say they support some other candidate.

Add it up, and that’s 94 percent of Republicans who say they support a specific candidate now. At this point, many voters are likely making preliminary decisions based on very little information. They know Scott Walker fought unions in Wisconsin. They know Jeb Bush is George W. Bush’s brother and George H.W. Bush’s son. They know Ted Cruz was involved in the government shutdown.

This year’s field seems much more stable at an earlier time. Yes, Kasich might enter the race – he certainly sounded that way last weekend in New Hampshire – and yes, perhaps another candidate will give it a try, too. But the basic structure of the Republican field seems nearly set.

And strong, too. Back in 2011 and 2012, it was common to hear Republicans complain about the weakness of their field. Some complain today – some always do – but the fact is the 2016 GOP field is a pretty impressive group.

Not all of them will make it to the Iowa caucuses. The key thing for the winning candidate is to realize that he will have to be able to assemble a coalition of those voters who support other candidates in the current 14-candidate field.

One thing a candidate – or anyone else, for that matter – should not do is dismiss what is going on in the race now as meaningless because it is so early. When February 2016 comes around, and the voting begins, some themes (and front-runners) in the race will look a lot like they look now.

South used Blackwood before settling into six spades. (Yes, Roman Key Card Blackwood would have been better because South would have learned that North held the spade queen.)

From South’s use of Blackwood, he is supposed to have second-round controls in both rounded suits. So the defense’s only chance is to score a trump trick. Concerns about dementia may lead to switching drugs Dear Dr. K: I’ve been taking over-the-counter antihistamines for years to control my allergies. Now I hear I may have to worry about dementia.

How real is the concern?

Dear Reader: Antihistamine drugs have “anticholinergic” (an-tee-cole-in-ER-jik) effects.

That means they have some tendency to block the action of a natural substance called acetylcholine. This substance transmits messages in the nervous system. In the brain, it is involved in learning and memory; in the rest of the body, it stimulates muscles to contract.

Drugs with anticholinergic effects include tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, some muscle relaxants, some intestinal relaxants, treat-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff ments for dizziness and drugs to treat overactive bladder. Between about 10 and 40 percent of older adults take drugs with anticholinergic effects. We’ve known for a long time these drugs can cause temporary symptoms such as sleepiness, confusion, and problems with short-term memory and reasoning.

Earlier this year, researchers published a study in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine which indicated these drugs also may increase the risk of a long-term problem: dementia. The research team

studied nearly 3,500 men and women ages 65 and older. They noted all the drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC), each person took the 10 years before starting the study.

Then the team tracked the participants’ health for an average of seven years.

During that time, 800 of the volunteers developed dementia. The researchers found that people who used drugs with prominent anticholinergic effects were more likely to have developed dementia than those who didn’t use them, and the risk of dementia increased with the cumulative dose. The people who took the highest doses for the longest time had a 54 percent higher dementia risk than people who took the lowest doses for the shortest

time.

Several prior studies have come to the same conclusion as this study. These prior studies had included only prescription drugs. This study is the first to include OTC drugs. In that way, it is more complete.

This study and several before it that come to similar conclusions are disturbing. Drugs with anticholinergic properties are widely used; I regularly take a medicine (fortunately in low dose) that has anticholinergic effects. I think this study was particularly well done.

The body produces less acetylcholine as we get older, and blocking its effects can deliver a double whammy to older people. So what does one do when presented with evidence like this? I think we have to balance

the benefits we know we are getting from the drug against the possible risks. We also have to ask ourselves if we have any options – other drugs to treat the same symptoms, but which do not have prominent anticholinergic effects.

If you regularly take an anticholinergic drug, talk to your doctor about alternatives. For example, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a good alternative to tricyclic drugs if you have depression. Newer antihistamines such as loratadine (Claritin) can replace first-generation antihistamines.
