for first-responder support MORRIS HERALD–NEWS WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., announced Wednesday the Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $866,923 in grants to communities throughout Illinois, including Dwight.

The funding will support and improve the capability of each department to respond to fires and other types of emergencies, according to a news release from Durbin.

Dwight Emergency Medical Services is set to receive $55,985.

“This federal funding will ensure that when fires or other emergencies occur in our communities, our nation’s firefighters and first responders have access to the best resources and the equipment necessary to help protect them as they protect us,” Durbin said in the news release.

Buffalo Grove is receiving the most money, at $253,364.

Morris man becomes state deputy of Knights of Columbus, starting July 11

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Knights of Columbus in Morris have been active since the council was founded in 1904 to support Immaculate Conception Church on the founding principles of Unity, Fraternity, Charity and Patriotism.

At age 18, Bill Doerfler of Morris followed in his father’s footsteps and became a member of the DuPontaris Council No. 845 of the Knights of Columbus, which still supports Immaculate Conception Church and School.

“My dad said, ‘You’re joining,’ ” he said. “By the time I was 20 years old I was the Grand Knight.”

He grew up watching his father be an active member of the fraternity and saw his dedication to doing charity work, and Doerfler said he knew it was a legacy he wanted to continue.

Since 1968, when he joined the Knights, Bill Doerfler has served as the Grand Knight of the local chapter, president of the Joliet Diocese chapter, district deputy and has been on the state board for 10 years.

After he retired from ComEd, he returned to the state board and served as a program director, an advocate as well as

“It’s a heck of a lot of sacrifice and I don’t know how the guys who work full time do it,” Doerfler said.

Doerfler spends at least five hours a day, plus weekends at times, putting in 50 to 60 hours a week as a volunteer with the organization.

He said there is nothing he’d rather do and is proud his sons Mark and Nick are following in his footsteps as members of the organization he holds so dear.

Nick Doerfler of Morris said his dad inspired him to become a Knight, and by the age of 31 served in the position of Grand Knight.

“We’ve been involved with the Knights since we were born. I love the charity work and everything the Knights stand for,” he said.

While he has served on the local council and watched his father for his entire life, nothing drove home more the pride for his father and the organization as when his father, representing the Knights of

Columbus, went into Diamond neighborhoods affected by the November 2013 tornado.

Nick Doerfler is a lieutenant with the Coal City Fire Protection District and was on scene in the hours and days after the natural disaster disrupted the lives of many residents.

“I will never forget my dad walking up to a guy and handing him a gift card,” Nick Doerfler said. “The guy said, ‘I’m not Catholic.’ My dad said, ‘It’s OK,’ and the guy gave him a big hug.”

Doerfler said seeing first-

hand how they were able to help people was amazing.

“I was involved in three ways: As a public service officer, a Knight and a son,” he said.

On July 11, Bill Doerfler will attend the installation Mass with his family and friends where he will take over leadership of the state positions, which has 450 councils in 95 districts. He’s already designed the state pin that will be shared with other council members while he is the state deputy.

He said the state council gives $3 million annually to charities in Illinois. The Morris council donates to the Catholic school’s reading program.

“The reading program didn’t have funds like the public schools do that support the program,” he said. “So that is where we step in.”

Father Ed Howe, priest of ICC, said the added support is crucial to the church. Not only for their support of the school, but also for many other things they do, such as offering a dinner where all the widows in the parish are invited for a homecooked meal.

The local council also directly supports Illinois Valley Industries, Special Olympics and Special Connections of Grundy County.

Residents object to location of proposed pot dispensary

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Despite objections from some residents against a requested conditional use permit for a medical marijuana dispensary in Morris by Greenhouse Group LLC, city officials reminded residents the upcoming City Council vote is only about the land use issue, not medical marijuana.

“The scope of what the city is authorized to do is to vote on the land use issue,” City Attorney Scott Belt said. “It’s not about medical marijuana. The state legislators already made that decision.”

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded 52 licenses to grow and sell medical marijuana in Illinois. The decisions were not controlled by local municipalities.

Mitchell Kahn, co-owner of Greenhouse Group, said Thursday that Morris is the second municipality the company has approached for land use permits. Mokena, which also is the proposed site for one of the three dispensaries Greenhouse Group wants to open, approved in April the land use permit requested there.

On Wednesday the Morris Planning Commission voted 4-1 to recommend the CPU to the full City Council; Plan Commission member Randy Werden voted no and members Barry Narvick and Jim Garling were absent. The City Council is scheduled to consider the permit request at its Monday meeting. More than 30 people attended Wednesday’s public hearing, the majority of whom represented opposition to the dispensary. Kahn said no residents spoke out at the Mokena meeting. The company’s third location will be in Deerfield, where both owners reside. A public hearing was scheduled Thursday in Deerfield.

Residents from Nettle Creek Country Club and Heatherfield Subdivisions in Erienna Township, as well as four residents from Morris,

spoke at Wednesday’s hearing in Morris.

The majority of residents said they were not against a dispensary, just the proposed location at the former Rockwell Inn restaurant, 2400 W. Route 6.

Donna Henningsen, who lives in Heatherfield, said she found the meeting informative.

“I understand a facility like this will help select people. I’m not against that at all,” she said. “But I am against the location.”

She said she had concerns about the location in relationship to her subdivision and Nettle Creek Country Club subdivision.

Pete Iouses, senior planner with Teska Associates, the city planners, presented a report to the commission that said the proposed dispensary complies with state requirements, such as being separated from schools and day care facilities, and the fairly isolated location on Route 6 received his recommendation for approval as long as five issues were addressed.

Iouses said several of those answers were addressed in the presentation, including hours of operation, anticipated traffic, confirmation that the proposed security plan complies with the requirements of the state, and confirmation with City Ordinance 4048, which addresses the Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, including prohibition of consumption of cannabis products on-site.

Matt Darin, co-owner of Greenhouse Group, said only 2,300 residents of Illinois have a medicinal cannabis card, so they don’t expect a lot of traffic, but estimated that number will grow over the next several years.

Hours of operation will most likely be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, with reduced hours on Saturdays. Darin also said cannabis can not be consumed on-site and if someone breaks those rules they will be turned over to the police. He said legally they can not consume cannabis until they get home.

Local banks are participating in a financial skills academy at We Care, and Fisher hopes to develop more initiatives such as it and the clothes closet.

Fisher starts Monday, and plans to make calls and knock on doors in his first week to get the community’s thoughts on We Care.

Fisher said he’s organized, a trait he developed working several years as a project manager for a home builder.

Through Eric Scott Fisher Illustrations, he created and donated the website, wecareofgrundy.com and the We Care logo.

Fisher and his wife Sarah (Kleinfeldt) Fisher have lived in Morris for the past 15 years.

In the fall their daughter, Molly, will be a freshman at Morris Community High School, located down the street from We Care.

She will play in the marching band.

It’s great to be close by, Fisher said, and he plans to attend football games and other events to support his daughter.

The appointment comes after Executive Director Denise Gaska accepted a job with Illinois Valley Industries, a local nonprofit that serves adults with development disabilities.

Gaska’s last day at We Care is Friday.

As for what’s next for We Care as a whole, Richardson said it will work this summer to provide meals for children who typically would have free or reduced lunch at school.

Preparation for We Care at the Farm and other events will start soon.

MORRIS – Eric Scott Fisher of Morris learned last week he was to be the next executive director of We Care of Grundy County and he hopes to use his multimedia background to raise We Care’s profile in the community and online.

“Eric has a heart for service and for people,” We Care Board President Chuck Richardson said. “He’s cared about the Eric Scott mission of We Fisher Care.”

His desire to volunteer has grown over time. Fisher was recently inspired while producing a video for the open house for We Care’s new, larger location at 530 Bedford Road.

“When I interviewed people, it was touching to hear their stories and the steps they’re taking to improve their situations,” Fisher said.

The clothing closet addition was big for We Care, Richardson said, but the building needs to add more programs and offerings because of the available space.

“We think Eric has the creativity and concern to determine what is best for We Care,” Richardson said.

Fisher has volunteered at We Care since 2008, taking part in activities such as stocking shelves, creating videos and taking photos to document We Care’s progress and events.

“I’ve always believed in the mission,” Fisher said. “Especially with the economy in recent years, there’s a need for it.”

Fisher has ideas about how to extend We Care’s reach through multimedia. He hopes to highlight clients and volunteers, if they are willing, to showcase what We Care offers in both capacities.

“I think it’s big to show We Care gives a hand-up rather than a hand-out,” Fisher said.

“That’s something I was asked about in the interview, and I think We Care definitely provides a hand-up.”

Decision follows heated discussion

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The restructuring of how bus drivers are paid created an at-times tense discussion Wednesday night during the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Board meeting.

The back-and-forth debate was primarily between Superintendent Al Gegenheimer and board member Doug Martin, after Gegenheimer proposed returning to a pay-per-route payment for the drivers, instead of an hourly rate.

“When I came to Minooka, the drivers were getting paid per route, but they were only doing one route, and one hour of work, but getting paid for two hours,” Gegenheimer said. “So, we went to an hourly system and using time cards.

Now it’s a problem, because some drivers are accusing other drivers of padding time cards.”

Bus drivers are responsible for their route, gassing the buses, performing a safety check and cleaning the bus while on the clock.

According to Gegenheimer, the accusations are causing

hours of work for transportation department staff as they check bus video to verify the submitted hours from drivers.

He said it also has led to a divisive staff.

“Every two weeks, employees feel their credibility is being questioned because someone accused them of padding their time card,” Gegenheimer said, adding that in most cases accusations prove to be unfounded.

Martin objected when Gegenheimer said he would like the board to approve a system where drivers are paid two hours and 15 minutes each route.

“We are trading one problem for another. If someone works less and someone works more and still gets paid the same amount, don’t you think that is going to cause a division with the employees, too?”

Martin said.

Gegenheimer said with the new Versatrans School Transportation Software, the district can gauge route times more accurately, saving time and money.

Gegenheimer is retiring early and his last day is June 5.

MORRIS – Two big programs are ready to hit the Morris Area Public Library.

One is a visit from New York Times best-selling author Elizabeth Berg, where she will give a presentation June 13. The other is a revamped adult summer reading program that aims to take book lovers to new levels of reading enjoyment.

New Adult Services Coordinator Emily Lombardi said Berg is a popular author.

“I got very Elizabeth lucky she was Berg willing to come here,” Lombardi said. “She has a place in her heart for small towns and small-town libraries. Everybody’s really excited about hosting her.”

Berg is a Chicago resident and has published 24 novels, including her most recent, “The Dream Lover.” She will have copies of it available for purchase and signing. Her book, “Open House,” was featured in Oprah Winfrey’s book club. Other books include, “Tapestry of Fortunes,” “True to Form” and “Never Change.”

Morris Librarian Kelley Majcen has read several of Berg’s books.

“I love her books,” she said.

“They’re real. I can identify with her characters. She has characters who could be real life. Even though her books are fictional, they’re true to life.”

Majcen is planning on attending Berg’s library presentation.

“This will be the first author I’ve ever met,” she said.

“I may have a book for her to sign, but I’m more excited just about her being here and hearing what she’s going to say.”

Berg’s presentation will be held in the library’s downstairs auditorium at 1 p.m.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – More than 500 participants have joined Team Megan 5K to raise money and help support the family of Megan Bugg, daughter of Coal City School District Superintendent Kent Bugg, as she fights Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma cancer.

The event is being organized by Shawn Hamilton and Chris Shirkey, friends of the family. Hamilton said Kent Bugg often runs with himself and Shirkey and they have participated in several running events. As they were trying to figure out what they could do for the family, it only made sense they organize a 5K. “We run a lot with Kent and we race on the weekend,” Hamilton said. “We decided to add a one-mile fun run and walk so that everyone can participate.”

The race will be at 10 a.m.

June 6 starting at the Coal City Middle School, 500 S. Carbon Hill Road.

The race, which has been mapped out, will lead runners past the Bugg home so that Megan can watch from her bedroom window if she isn’t up to

attending the event.

Megan received clear scan results Thursday showing that her cancer is in remission, and she is scheduled to start radiation Monday. The treatments require her to be hospitalized for five days, Kent Bugg said, and oftentimes she is not up to leaving home once she gets back from the hospital.

Bugg said his family has been humbled by the community support and all they have done since she was diagnosed in December and started treatment in January.

“There is no doubt in our minds that the support she is receiving is making a difference in her recovery,” Bugg said. “I struggle putting into words what this means to us.”

Arnold B. “Sonny” Kjellesvik, age 90, of Morris, formerly of Lisbon, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 27, 2015, at Park Pointe Senior Living in Morris.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Lisbon Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Larry Jacobsgaard officiating. Interment will follow in Lisbon Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Morris Color Guard.

Born on Dec. 1, 1924, in Lisbon, he was the son of Burtel and Doris (Jones) Kjellesvik. He attended Newark High School. He married Betty Pfaff, on January 19, 1947,

in Morris. They lived most of their married life in Lisbon and Morris. He was a farm equipment mechanic at M. K. Wix and Sons for 24 years and Lisbon Implement for 22 years.

He was a veteran of W.W. II and served in the U.S. Army. Arnold was recognized by France and awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honor for his contribution to the liberation of France. He was PFC of the 298th Combat Engineer Battalion and fought at the Battle of the Bulge in Germany.

Survived by his children, Thomas(Vicki) Kjellesvik of Oswego and Penny (Fred) Skelton of Morris; six grandchildren, Kelly (Troy) Rieser, Kim (Dan) Thorpen, Brent (Katie) Skelton, Chris (Crystal) Kjellesvik, Chad (Danielle) Skelton and Cara(Adam) Estrada; eleven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty on January 19, 2014; two sisters, Ethyel O’Brien and Sharon Sanderson.

He was a member of Lisbon Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and lifelong member of the NRA. He also served as mayor of Lisbon. Byers, NCAA’s 1st executive director, dies at 93

By JIM O’CONNELL The Associated Press Walter Byers, the first executive director of the NCAA who spent 36 years leading and shaping the organization that oversees college athletics, has died. He was 93.

Byers died Tuesday at his home in Emmett, Kansas, when a urinary tract infection spread into his bloodstream, son Fritz said Wednesday.

A main part of Byers’ job when he started as NCAA executive director in 1951 was to help the schools maintain strict control of all revenues the athletes generated. Then, the figures weren’t too impressive. Now, the deals for football and basketball rights are worth billions. He helped invent the now widely used term “student-athlete,” which he said was intended to disguise

the fact that players had become de facto professionals.

He was a big proponent of having the NCAA oversee women’s athletics, as well, and that came to fruition in the early 1980s.

“He established something that never existed before,” former Big Eight and Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke said Wednesday from his home in Barrington, Illinois. Duke was Byers’ first hire at the NCAA and the two remained close through the years. “He had to come up with structure for all kinds of athletics, team and individual, at the national level. Before him there was nothing.”

One of the first duties Byers gave Duke was to work with television as a partner to work on contracts and improve the relationship between the entities.

“He had the foresight then that it would all come about,” Duke said. “He took the NCAA from an organization run on a part-time basis to one of the most powerful in sports.”

Byers was 29 years old when he was hired by the NCAA. The offices opened in Kansas City, Missouri – his hometown – with five employees. When he retired in 1987, the NCAA had about 150 fulltime employees and its membership had grown from 381 schools to 1,003.

“He was remarkable. Brilliant. A very creative individual but very strong and demanding,” Tom Jernstedt, an NCAA executive for almost 40 years, said from his Indianapolis home Wednesday night, “but his employees all had the utmost respect for him because of his work ethic and leadership values.”

Byers gave the then-28year-old Jernstedt the responsibility for directing the men’s Division I basketball tournament, which would become one of the most popular sport-

ing events in the world.

“In my opinion he never received credit for his leadership in building that event,” Jernstedt said. “In my mind he is the father of the NCAA basketball tournament and he doesn’t get the recognition for that.”

Byers was always a staunch defendant of college amateurism but he revealed in a 1987 interview with The Associated Press that he had first suggested drastic changes in player compensation three years earlier during a private meeting of the policymaking NCAA Council. The council, a group of highly placed administrators from NCAA schools and conferences, refused to listen, he said. Now, the NCAA is refining a plan that would allow athletes to receive money to cover expenses of normal college living.

Morris’ season ends in regional loss to L-P

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com OTTAWA – Heading into this season, Morris baseball coach Todd Kein knew his team would have good pitching. The defense looked solid, but the big question was whether the Redskins would generate offense consistently.

Wednesday evening’s Class 3A Ottawa Regional semifinal 2-0 loss to LaSalle-Peru illustrated those qualities.

Cody Niewinski was strong on the mound, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits. He struck out five and walked only one. The defense behind him helped him out, as left fielder Tom Cheshareck recorded two assists, throwing out a runner at home and nabbing another at second before another runner crossed the plate.

Unfortunately, the Redskins were able to manage just two hits off LaSalle-Peru’s Austin Prybylinski.

Cheshareck and Matt Walker hit back-to-back singles leading off the top of the second inning. The Redskins, who finish the season with a 1516-1 record, attempted a sacrifice bunt, but the ball went directly back to Prybylinski, who forced Cheshareck out at third. He then struck out the next two Morris hitters to end the threat.

In the bottom of the second, John Bergen led off with a single for L-P. Niewinski struck out Kyle Quick before Elliot Lewis walked. Carter Coble singled to left, but Cheshareck came up firing and was able to throw out the runner trying to score. A hit batter loaded the bases, but Niewinski got the next hitter to pop to second to keep the game scoreless.

In the bottom of the third, Cam Minon led off with a triple to right, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Miliacki.

Austin Mueller led off the inning with a single and was run for by Matt Smoron. Minon grounded to second and Morris’ Emmet Chouinard tagged Smoron. His throw to first was high, however, and it allowed

Minon to reach second. Miliacki followed with a single to right to bring Minon home.

“Cody did his job, just like we knew he would,” Kein said.

“There was no one else I was going to give the ball to today.

He has earned it with what he

did throughout the year and he did a great job.

“We just didn’t get that door to open for us offensively.

Traditionally, it’s a low-scoring game with us and L-P. The highest scoring game I can remember is a couple years ago when they beat us, 4-3. But, if you would have told me before the game that L-P was going to score two runs, I would have liked our chances.”

Morris had a chance in the top of the sixth, but the dimensions of King Field worked against them. With one out, Tyler Bordner walked and Jordan Miracle ran for him. On a 2-0 count, Cheshareck got a fastball to his liking and put all he had into the swing. Unfortunately, he hit it to the deepest part of the park and Ben Bejster caught it just to

the right of the 380-foot sign in center field.

“I can think of 10 other parks we’ve played in this year that Tom’s ball would have been out of,” Kein said.

“If you were to ask him if he was trying for a home run there, he would probably say yes. We needed something to get us going there, and he almost did it.

“This was a hard-fought season. The guys may not have achieved what they wanted, but I was proud of the way they came to the park every day ready to work. We knew we had our limitations, but they worked hard to maximize everything we did have. I am proud of what the seniors contributed to the program, both as people and as players.”

Sanchez leads Minooka to regional win

Minooka lost its head coach, Jeff Petrovic, to an ejection on the third batter in the top of the first inning Thursday. The Indians lost another potential good inning on a disputed call.

Right-hander Miguel Ruiz walked seven batters in the first three innings and wound up throwing 125 pitches in seven innings.

And yet, Cristian Sanchez found a way to power the Indians to an 11-3, eight-inning victory over Joliet West in the semifinals of the Class 4A West Regional.

Yes, 11-3 was the final score after Sanchez’s three-run triple after a huge error on the Tigers keyed an eight-run top of the eighth inning.

“If someone came late to this game, they never would have thought any of this could have happened,” Ruiz said.

Sanchez’s foot was the cause of the early hullabaloo.

He digs in at the plate with his right foot barely touching the back line of the batter’s box.

West coach John Karczewski and catcher Eastin May questioned whether Sanchez was in the box. As soon as he fouled off a 2-1 pitch from Tigers ace left-hander, Robert Talarico, the home plate umpire called him out for hitting a pitch with a foot outside the box.

Minooka had runners at first and second with nobody out at the time as Hayden Laczynski opened the game with a single and Kevin Null bunted for hit.

Petrovic came in from the third-base coach’s box and confronted the umpire.

“Cristian has stood in the same spot in the box for two years,” Petrovic said. “Every umpire knows his back foot is on the line. I asked him [umpire] to ask for help from the base umpire, and he didn’t want to.”

Petrovic’s ejection means he will not coach the third-seeded Indians (21-13)

A bison comeback It is almost impossible to imagine what Illinois looked like before westward expansion. I try constantly with limited success. When thinking of the Prairie State’s past an image most often recalled is of the bison. The massive land mammal once roamed across much of North America. While its numbers were dangerously close to perilous levels in the not-so-distant past, the creature is making a comeback.

About a year ago, I wrote an article on the proposed plan to introduce bison to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.

That project is well underway and there is a slight possibility that a small herd may be roaming across the landscape by this fall. According to a recent article in the Chicago Tribune, “The U.S. Forest Service site near Wilmington will start with a combination of twenty-six young and mature bison, but the 1,200-acre prairie set aside for the project could eventually support a herd of about 100, Midewin officials said.”

That is pretty exciting news. Besides the historical value of bringing back a native species, the bison also serve as conservationists. Midewin officials are trying to restore the prairie to its natural state. The wide variety of grasses and plant life in a prairie ecosystem can be difficult to manage.

Recently, cattle have been used to help. Bison, however, will be much more effective at maintaining a healthy prairie.

According to the article, bison are “selective” grazers. They forage on certain species and leave others alone. These plants not bitten off provide homes and nesting areas for many types of birds. Bison are natural to the land management process and will be beneficial to the goals for the site.

A lot of work needs to be done in order to prepare Midewin for the herd. Fences need to be put in, areas for the off-loading of the creatures, and eventually additional trails will be added so visitors can experience the animals.

Most of the time, managers of bison herds move the creatures in the fall. The newborn of the year are older and more capable of survival and the late-summer breeding season

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers is over. The plan, according to the Tribune article, is to provide Midewin with a herd of some mature and younger animals. Much of what the officials at Midewin are learning has come from another prairie restoration project in northern Illinois. The Nachusa Grasslands are located about 90 miles west of Chicago. This also is a work in progress and the data collected over the next several decades will aid greatly in future restorations.

The Nachusa Grasslands were still putting finishing touches on the site the day the bison arrived last fall. “Bison take a lot of upfront work, but they’re really low-maintenance once they’re in,” said Jeff Walk, the director of science for the Illinois chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

“I think they could absolutely make sense to manage prairies at other grassland sites. In the long run, they’re absolutely worth it.”

Before the arrival of Europeans to the North American continent, it is estimated more than 30 million bison roamed free. By the end of the 1800s, that number dipped below 1,000. That drastic of a decline in just a few centuries is almost impossible to fathom.

The good news, the animal is on the upswing once again. According to a 2012 U.S. Department of Agriculture survey there were approximately 20,000 bison roaming public land and another 162,000 kept of private property. Illinois held 688 at that time. What will the future hold for bison? Hard to say, but it looks like that local residents will soon have the opportunity to seem them roaming in their natural habitat. Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is a treasure for our area. It is only fitting they will soon host another iconic image of our nation’s past. STARS opener Saturday STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – The Short Track Auto Racing Series (STARS) season opener is Saturday at Grundy County Speedway.

STARS will have all five divisions competing and will be led by The D’Arcy GMC National Midgets. Opening night will honor the late Patrick Wilda Jr., who lost his life in an industrial accident in January. Wilda began racing at the age of nine in go-carts, before moving to midgets when he turned 16 and was named the 2004 UMARA Rookie of the Year. In 2005 Wilda earned his first three wins of his career (as a car owner) on the way to claiming the car owner’s championship. Also that year Wilda was voted Most Popular Driver. In Wilda’s 31st career start with STARS on Sept. 14, 2013, he captured his only series win at the Night Before the 400. Wilda ranks in the top six in STARS history in top five’s, top 10’s, career starts, and fast qualifying times. Wilda’s last race with STARS was last August where he finished in third place. The night will

honor Wilda in multiple ways.

STARS will be designating a reserve section in the grandstands for Wilda’s family and close friends.

After the National Anthem, the Wilda family will lead the parade laps and at the start of the race the pole position will have the missing man formation. Patrick Wilda Sr. will be the honorary driver in the pace truck.

There will also be significant giveaways for fans and drivers. Drivers will win prizes for different race accomplishments. Fans will have the opportunity to win giveaway certificates. At the end of the night a super giveaway with duplicates of all the giveaway certificates will be awarded to one lucky fan.

The pits will open at 1 p.m. and the front gate at 4:30. The first races will begin at 6. Before the race, there will be a car show to remember and honor the late Patrick Wilda Jr. at the Grundy County Fair Grounds from noon to 4:30.

divisions competing will be the STARS Classic Modifieds (Dwarf), Illini Racing Series Sportsman Midgets (IRS), CSR Super Cups, and Legacy Midwest Racing Series. Adult tickets cost $12, children tickets (age 5 to 12) cost $2, and children 4 and under are free. No charge for parking.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Please maintain funding for kidney dialysis

To the Editor: As a certified technician for DaVita HealthCare Partners here in Morris, taxpayers need to know that lives are at stake as lawmakers consider budget cuts affecting people who require life-sustaining kidney dialysis treatments.

In Illinois alone, more than 5,000 people who depend on the state’s Medicaid program as their insurance provider currently receive dialysis treatments.

But as lawmakers struggle to make a balanced budget, some are advocating for a savings of $30 million by eliminating

access to dialysis treatments for some patients and reducing reimbursement rates for others.

Cutting services that provide life-sustaining treatment should not be a negotiable budget item.

When dialysis clinics can no longer afford to serve uninsured or underinsured patients, then publicly funded emergency rooms and hospitals will incur the much higher costs of treating these patients on dialysis.

I urge lawmakers to do the right thing and maintain funding for kidney dialysis patients.

The pastor or another leader would cheerfully say how glad the homefolks were to have visitors in their midst and ask newcomers to stand and be recognized. Members might even point at guests, to make sure they were spotted.

Visitors would then be asked to share their names, where they were from and perhaps even why they were visiting.

A friendly gesture to help guests feel welcome? Or a surefire way to freak out introverted people who may have struggled with the decision to visit a pew?

Bertolt Brecht, a German playwright and poet who died in 1956, said, “If there are obstacles, the shortest line between two points may be a crooked line.”

If there are obstacles to better play at the bridge table, it is often thinking in crooked lines, not on a straight path.

Today’s deal is an example. How should South plan the play in four spades? West leads a heart. East wins with his king, cashes the heart ace, and shifts to a low club.

Note the bidding. North’s twoheart cue-bid showed at least 12 high-card points (or a super 11). Then his raise to three spades indicated a minimum.

But South knew his partnership had at least 26 combined points, so he went on to game. He was also aware that from the auction, he would be able to place the cards better than if the opponents had passed throughout.

When I run this deal in classes, it is disappointing how many declarers cannot resist the temptation of the spade finesse, because it looks like the standard play. But the better players take a few moments to count up the high-card points. Since dummy and declarer combined have 27, the defenders have only 13, yet East opened the bidding. He must have the spade king.

So South should play a spade to dummy’s ace, then lead a low spade.

When the king pops up, declarer can claim.

If you count only one thing at the bridge table, make it high-card points. You will find apparent guesses becoming certainties.

General Description Technician to perform all functions associated with managing a tool room. Tool room provides inventorying, tracking, inspections, calibration, and service of materials stored and issued to end users for use in industrial environment. Tool Room Functions Pulling and Issuing tools and materials per request Returning and stocking tools and materials Maintaining safety stocking levels of inventory items Track tool history in provided Tool Room System Performing authorized inspections, calibrations, repairs per SOPs Participates in annual inventory and cycle counts Provide scheduled and requested customer reports Visual inspections of all tools returned and stored in Tool Room Communications to customer of outstanding and service items due back to Tool Room Small electrical repairs and testing (Extension cords and small tool cords repair)
