By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Matthew Darin with Greenhouse Group opened the public hearing portion of the City of Morris Planning Commission meeting Wednesday night with a presentation to the committee and the 36 residents who came out for the meeting.

Darin explained some of the plans and security for the business the company – which wants to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Morris – hopes to open at the former Rockwell Inn restaurant at 2400 W. Route 6.

“We like the fact that it is on Route 6 and accessible to both Grundy and Kendall counties,” he said during the meeting.

Darin and his business partner Mitchell Kahn said prior to the meeting they hope to dispel some of the myths of what a medical dispensary will look like. They said the facility will be more like wellness center than a typical pharmacy.

“We think a little differently, we want to offer people a full range of services,” Kahn said. “We will look more like a spa and will offer acupuncture, yoga, and perhaps some oriental healing if that is what our patients want.”

Greenhouse Group was approved in February by the state for a dispensing license to be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties.

In March, the company was set to appear before the planning commission in a public hearing, but postponed its request.

They were back on the planning commission’s agenda for April 29 but representatives of Greenhouse Group said the first proposed location – 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It Again” video store – did not meet state and city requirements, so they started looking in Morris again.

“One reason we have chosen the Rockwell Inn location is because it meets all state and local zoning requirements,” Darin said. “It also meets the criteria we were searching for, which was at

Darin and Kahn said signage will not say marijuana, weed or show images of marijuana plants, and the facility will appear more like a spa or wellness center. There would be 30 video cameras running 24/7 both inside and outside, and security for deliveries will include vehicles delivering the product inside the building by access of a garage door.

Committee member Dennis Hackett asked about banking and cash on hand. Kahn and Darin said they have found three banks that have agreed to take deposits and they plan to bank with one of those institutions since they can not take credit or debit cards.

Eleven people – including residents of Morris, Plainfield and Seneca – signed up to speak at the meeting.

Ted Ergo of Morris presented a petition with 62 signatures asking the city to not allow Greenhouse Group to move into the former Rockwell Inn. Charlotte Cohenour, who lives in Heatherfield Subdivision across from the proposed property, presented a petition signed by 42 residents of her neighborhood.

Ron Swart, vice president of the Heatherfield Homeowners Association, said before the meeting they were present to let the committee know they would prefer Greenhouse Group find a different location.

The Rev. William Stinnette with Ambassadors for Christ Church in Morris spoke said he did not want the company moving into the Route 6 location as it is surrounded on three sides by property owned by the church.

Nick Offerman returns home to promote book, offers signings, readings

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Nick Offerman took the stage Wednesday night to cheers, decked out in his black and orange senior year varsity jacket after being introduced by his father, Ric Offerman.

“Twenty-nine years ago, I don’t think anybody, Nick included, would’ve thought he’d be here signing books,” Ric Offerman said to the auditorium crowd of about 730.

Offerman returned to his hometown of Minooka for a book tour stop that included a reading and signing at the Minooka Community High School Central Campus, coordinated by Anderson’s Bookshop of Naperville and Three Rivers Public Library.

Perhaps best known for playing Ron Swanson on the NBC television show “Parks and Recreation,” which broadcast its finale in February, Offerman has played many roles in movies and other television series.

But Offerman’s latest work is his second book, following 2013’s “Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living,” for which he also made a stop in Minooka.

“I played the elementary school last time,” Offerman said. “I consider it a great compliment to get upgraded to the high school.”

His sister, Laurie Offerman, director of Three Rivers Public Library District, said she asked Nick to make a stop in Minooka the first time he wrote a book.

This time, he told her he was coming to Minooka in support of a second book.

Nothing her brother does surprises her anymore, she said.

“When he said he was going to write the first book, I was like, ‘Yeah, whatever.

The last time Offerman was on stage in Minooka, he portrayed Jud Fry in “Oklahoma!”

Offerman brought in another local tie, when he read a passage to the audience about Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, who makes his home in Chicago and whom Offerman met years ago, that drew laughter after seemingly every other sentence.

He’s come a long way from his days in the fields of Minooka. Offerman moved to Chicago and co-founded Defiant Theatre in 1993.

“It was great for him to move to Chicago,” Laurie Offerman said.

He went on to land various film and television roles, and performed his standup tour “American Ham” across the country – and now, he’s an author of two books.

“I always knew he’d go beyond Minooka,” Laurie Offerman said. “It’s inspirational to the community to see someone start from humble beginnings and do so well for themselves.”

When he’s not performing or writing a book, Offerman can be found in his woodshop in Los Angeles, which is home to a group of woodworkers handcrafting everything from pencil holders to canoes.

“I hope to write more books,” Offerman said. “My third would be a book about woodworking and my woodworking shop.”

With several more stops on his book tour, Offerman hits the Merle Reskin Garage Theatre Thursday in Chicago, the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on Friday and the Javits Center in New York City on Saturday.

New garbage routes in Morris begin June 1

Company aims to help avoid school buses and late-afternoon traffic MORRIS – Some Morris residents will have a new garbage day starting June 1.

Republic Services has mailed notification to residents that includes a map, calendar and the benefits of the service day change. Residents can call or email the company if they have questions or concerns, operations manager Robert Schwichtenberg said Tuesday.

The schedule change has mutual benefits for city residents and Republic Services, Schwichtenberg said.

“It balances the home count

throughout the week and allows us to manage and control hours,” he said.

The prime benefit for the community, he said, is that garbage trucks will be through with their routes earlier in the day.

This will help to avoid conflicting with school buses and other late-afternoon to rushhour traffic, and in turn keep the streets safer by reducing the number of hours garbage trucks are in service each day, Schwichtenberg said.

As for the schedule itself, downtown Morris garbage will continue to be picked up Mondays to make sure the area is clean after each week-

Re-elected Minooka trustees sworn in

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Three longtime Minooka trustees were reinstated at Tuesday’s village board meeting.

Dennis Martin was first elected in 1999, Barry Thompson in 2003 and Dick Parrish in 2007. Martin is the village’s finance chair, Thompson chairs the public works committee and Parrish heads public safety. The incumbents ran without opposition in the April election.

Martin works with a conservative committee to keep the village in the black, Mayor Pat Brennan said. Thompson is diligent about keeping streets and sidewalks in good repair and Parrish does a great job working alongside the Minooka Police Department.

“We are very lucky to get all three back for another four years,” Brennan said.

During the public forum, representatives from W.W. Grainger Inc. presented a $4,000 check to the Citizen’s Police Academy to purchase three additional automated external

defibrillators.

This is the second year the academy applied for and received a grant from the Grainger Foundation, said Denis Tatgenhorst, Community Policing Officer. Last year the academy received $5,000 for equipment and supplies.

Two of the new AED’s will be located in the police department and one will be mobile with the public works department to have on-site.

Electricity to go to bid

Trustees unanimously approved an agreement with Nimec to manage the village’s streetlight electricity needs.

Minooka has worked with Nimec for several years.

The agreement gives Nimec the authority to bid out electricity to suppliers in order to secure the lowest possible price. The electricity market has dropped since the last bid so Nimec expects pricing to be lower than the current cost of 3.4530 cents, according to correspondence. There is no cost to the village to participate in the program bidding on electricity.

In other business, trustees unanimously approved an ordinance adopting the Prevailing Wage Act, and approved the 2015-16 Village Board meeting dates.

We Care names new director

By MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County has hired Eric Scott Fisher as its new executive director.

The hire was announced Wednesday evening in a news release from the We Care board of directors. He will replace De- Eric Scott nise Gaska, who Fisher has taken a job with Illinois Valley Industries.

“Our board members are very impressed with Eric’s ability to reach an audience through his visual communication skills and his approachable and engaging personality,” We Care’s Board

President Chuck Richardson said in the news release. “We believe Eric will be able to improve We Care’s profile among clients and donors through his creativity and fresh perspective.”

As a freelance illustrator and videographer, Fisher said he is looking forward to increasing We Care’s outreach and impact.

Eric and his wife, Sarah (Kleinfeldt) Fisher, have lived in Morris for 15 years.

His daughter, Molly, will be entering Morris Community High School in the fall.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Every Thursday from May 28 to Sept. 17, JJC will have its weekly farmers market, where visitors can buy fresh produce from noncommercial vendors. The college also will offer courses in photography, software, cooking and dancing, as well as camps for children

and teenagers. The third annual farmers market will be at the Greenhouse Facility on the Main Campus, 1515 Houbolt Road, Joliet.

Rachel Rose, JJC media and communications specialist, said the farmers market will accept Illinois LINK funds.

The market will offer produce, baked goods, grass-fed meats and gourmet candy.

“All of our producers are local farmers or shop owners.

No commercial enterprises are allowed,” Rose said.

Classes on subjects such as

photography and cooking will be available for those looking to do something fun, Rose said.

An eight-week digital photography class will begin June 2. The course will cover camera basics and students will take photos between sessions.

There will be another digital photography class on July 15, which will teach photography techniques through hands-on exercises.

For people curious about cooking, a sausage-making course and another on tropical dishes will begin June 15 and

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Board member Harold Vota spoke during public comment at Tuesday night’s Technology and Elections Committee meeting to voice his concerns about the broadcasting of committee meetings.

“My personal opinion is you are discouraging people from coming to the meetings by broadcasting it to them,” Vota said.

He questioned Technology Committee Chairman David Nelson as to why it wasn’t brought before the board for a vote to see if it was legal.

Nelson referred to County Board Chairman David Welter, who was on the board prior to Nelson being elected, to help explain the process.

Welter said the full County Board weighed in on the purchase of the software before it was approved.

“Board members were provided a document that listed the capabilities,” Welter said.

“The full board did vote on the software.”

Vota said one of the issues with broadcasting committee meetings is that people watch and will complain about it the next morning with friends or comment on Facebook about what took place.

“Sometimes people say wrong things and it’s going to be broadcast,” Vota said.

“Sometimes I say things I wish I hadn’t said.”

He also questioned why just some of the committees are being broadcast. Videos of meetings that are broadcast also are available on the coun-

ty website.

Welter said the two committees that don’t meet in the same room at the Grundy County Administration building are the Highway and Emergency Management committees and it would be cost-prohibitive to wire those meetings with the needed technology.

Board member Frank Halpin asked what the cost was to the county to broadcast the committee meetings.

County IT Director Tim Doss said the county spent less than $500 for two cameras, and an additional $249 for audio capabilities that were needed after the initial meeting where they had audio problems. The software had already been paid for.

Welter said there are several benefits to having the videos online, including giving the capability of board members to view and see what was discussed at meetings they either miss or don’t sit on the committee for.

Nelson said he has watched some of the meetings to see how a committee comes to a recommendation on a topic so he can be educated before voting in the full County Board meeting.

“I believe in government being transparent,” Nelson said.

“I don’t see how it discourages anyone from coming.”

He said if anything it encourages people to watch and get involved with local government and county government.

Welter said if any technology committee members would like to motion it for a vote he would not be against taking it to the County Board. No one motioned the vote.

BRIEF Electronic waste event to be held June 6

Used books for children being collected

MORRIS – The Environmental Office of the Grundy County Land Use Department is collecting used children’s books for Bernie’s Book Bank during the month of June.

The office is asking Grundy County residents to give gently used children’s books to its Book Drive so Bernie’s Book Bank has items for distribution.

Books can be dropped off June 1 to 30 at the Grundy County Administration Building, 1320 Union St., Morris.

Bernie’s Book Bank will take the donations and put them into the hands of children in need.

All books collected will be redistributed within five days.

GARDNER – About 150 area families took part in the mobile food pantry sponsored by Standard Bank at the Gardner American Legion earlier this month.

With 6,179 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 41 pounds of food, including 19 pounds of frozen meat and a variety of other items, including potatoes, onions, spinach, cereal and bread, according to a news release from We Care.

“We have sponsored a number of mobile food pantries through the years, and it was an honor to sponsor the last truck that Denise Gaska served in her official capacity as We Care director. I know we will see her, however, at the next delivery as a volunteer,” Kelly Beaty, president of Standard Bank, said in the news release.

The next mobile food pantry is sponsored by United Way of Grundy County and is sched-

uled for June 10 at the Early Childhood Education Center, 755 S. Carbon Hill Road, Coal City. Registration will begin at 4:15 p.m. To ensure the safety of children leaving school, do not arrive before 4 p.m. Distribution will begin at 5 p.m.

Any family who resides in Grundy County and is in need of assistance with food is welcome to attend. Attendees must provide proof of residency either with a valid driver’s license, state ID or utility bill with a current Grundy County address, according to the news release. Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring a container to carry the items they will receive; plastic laundry baskets and wheeled carts work well. For information, call 815-942-6389.

Vigilance leads Morris into regional final

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com OTTAWA – The first batter Morris’ softball team sent to the plate Wednesday scored.

For a while, it appeared it would be the only run of the game, but the Redskins figured out Plano pitcher Shannon Tierney later in the game and picked up a 5-0 victory in the semifinals of the Class 3A Ottawa Regional.

After Abby Burns held Plano scoreless in the top of the first, Janelle Brehm led off the bottom of the first with a single off the second baseman’s glove. Jasmine Cook bunted, Brehm rounded second and, when no one was covering third, didn’t slow down and went all the way to third. Emily Moore grounded to short, and when Plano shortstop Cassie Willis threw to first, Brehm took off for home, sliding in headfirst ahead of the throw for a 1-0 Morris lead.

“We have a new mentality for the postseason,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “We are going to be more aggressive. Every run is going to count, so we want to try to manufacture as many as we can by being aggressive on the bases.”

Unfortunately for the Redskins, they didn’t get another chance to be aggressive on the bases when Tierney retired nine straight in the second through fourth innings.

Meanwhile, Burns, who finished with a four-hitter and eight strikeouts, pitched out of a couple of jams to keep the Reapers off the board.

In the top of the fifth, Leah Lines led off with a double to left-center and was bunted to third by Burns. Taya Torkelson followed with a single up the middle to score Lines. Melissa Benson bunted Torkelson to second before Ryan Friend was hit by a pitch.

A wild pitch moved the runners up a base and Brehm slugged a double to left to score both Torkelson and Friend for a 4-0 Morris lead. Cook followed with a single to center that plated Brehm to make the score 5-0.

They are seniors and that’s the kind of leadership we need in the postseason. They have been through it before. Once they got us going, we kept it up.

“I think we had some jitters early, but once we saw their pitcher a couple of times, we figured her out a little bit. I hope we can get the offense going earlier Saturday. One run is a cushion, but you never know what can happen in a regional title game.”

Burns retained her dominance in the final two innings, setting Plano down in order in the top of the sixth before striking out two in the seventh.

“Abby threw well,” Lowery said. “Especially after the first couple of innings. She got all of her pitches working, and our defense was rock solid behind her. Her pitching and the defense got us out of a few jams early. At the time, those were big innings to get out of because we only had the 1-0 lead.”

Morris returns to action 11 a.m. Saturday at in the regional title game against the winner of the of Ottawa versus LaSalle-Peru.

A central question is: Did the Bears sign McDonald because it was possible he was innocent of the earlier charges against him and he could be a positive contributor to the team for several years to come? Or did they not care

I’m not sure when it became popular and important for media and fans to beat up the team they cover or their favorite team for making a mistake.

I know nothing positive comes from it, but not every question has an answer, and it’s too easy to blame everything on new technology or social media.

The problem, however, is it creates new distortions and misinformation that get in the way of what sports and our favorite teams are supposed to be: games for us to enjoy.

Bears chairman George McCaskey, general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox thought the signing of troubled veteran defensive end Ray McDonald was a risk worth taking and he could be a positive addition to the team.

Not that it matters, but I agreed with them.

When asked Wednesday about his initial reaction to McDonald’s latest domestic violence arrest, McCaskey responded, “The overriding emotion for me was sadness – sadness for the child, for the child’s mother and for the entire situation.

“Domestic violence is a vexing social problem. The NFL has had some high-profile cases, including this one, and the NFL, because it’s a leader in society, is called upon to take action, which we are doing. We’re not going to do it by ourselves, but I think we have an opportunity to make an impact.”

Asked whether he had any regrets about signing McDonald, who was released Monday, McCaskey said, “I’ve asked myself that question a lot.

What more could I have done?

Is there somebody else we could have consulted with?

“Should I have taken more time to make a decision? I don’t know. We thought we had a good structure, a good support system. We thought we had safeguards in place in case something like this happened.”

So, was the signing of McDonald wrong? Obviously, it was.

But was it a risk worth taking? That really depends on why they chose to take it and the ramifications.

The powers of free speech I ran into Kirsten Powers briefly in Washington, D.C., the other day, and afterward I thought to myself: “I hope she knows she is a profile in courage.”

“The more I got to know actual conservative and religious people, the harder it was to justify the stereotypes I had carelessly embraced,” Powers writes in her new book, “The Silencing: How the Left Is Killing Free Speech.”

In her early days at Fox News, on which she is a frequent presence, the pundit recalls: “I can remember trying to convince a conservative ... that George Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court didn’t really count as a female appointment because she was conservative and an evangelical Christian.”

Today, Powers is “embarrassed that I ever thought such a thing, let alone said it aloud.”

In her book, Powers chronicles the impulse on the left, from the highest levels of government down to the shrillest blog, to shut down speech that takes an opposing or alternative view.

This intolerance isn’t liberalism but a tyrannical impulse often masked under words such as freedom and tolerance.

John Carr, who used to work at the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Conference, started a forum at Georgetown University when he retired from the USCCB a few years ago that brought people of different political stripes together. On one such panel, I sat next to a bishop I previously had known mostly as the go-to cleric for criticisms of Rep. Paul Ryan’s budgets.

Powers is a profile in courage because she aims for the truth. She is eminently humble. If the truth takes her down a road she hadn’t considered, she’ll consult some experts, take a look and, as you’ve seen, even apologize.

Imagine that.

“Truth is like a threshing-machine; tender sensibilities must keep out of the way,” Herman Melville wrote in “The Confidence Man.” When I asked Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput why he used Melville’s line to open an e-book of his on religious freedom, he talked about the need for civility and honesty in our public discourse.

In “The Silencing,” Powers quotes my colleague, David French, reflecting on what he’s seen on college campuses: “Anti-Christian discrimination can be reflexive” but “a little bit of intellectual diversity can go a long way towards reversing its effects.”

This certainly sounds better than the quality of our current discourse.

State budget ‘insanity’ continues As the saying goes, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Such is the case with Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and his proposal for a new state budget.

Madigan and state Democrats unveiled a budget plan Monday – in advance of Sunday’s scheduled end to the legislative session – that calls for spending more than $3 billion beyond what the state anticipates bringing in. Republican feedback was absent.

“Our plan is to pass a budget this week for the next fiscal year that takes a balanced, responsible approach,” Madigan said.

Yes, you read that correctly. Madigan’s “balanced” and “responsible” budget spends $3 billion more than anticipated revenue.

The Democrats’ $36.3 billion spending plan for the

fiscal year that begins in July avoids about $5 billion in cuts Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed.

Madigan said the Legislature is committed to “work with the governor” to raise the funds needed to protect vulnerable residents.

Here’s the problem: Illinois residents aren’t interested in Democrats working with the Republican governor on ways to raise funds, which is a nicer way of saying, “Raise taxes.”

Been there. Done that.

It doesn’t work. Illinois is an economic laughingstock because of Democrats doing the same thing over and over again.

If Illinois residents wanted more of the same, they would have voted for Pat Quinn in November. They didn’t. They voted for Rauner, who promised smaller government and to run the state like a business.

We can’t trust lawmakers

with more money. Last time we gave lawmakers more money after a shady, lameduck vote to raise taxes, they didn’t use the money the way they promised.

Illinois needs to examine spending, not look at ways to find more money so it can spend more money.

“The speaker and his allies in the Legislature are sorely mistaken if they believe the people of Illinois will accept doubling down on a broken system that has failed Illinois over the last dozen years,” Rauner’s press secretary, Lance Trover, said in a statement.

Democrats likely will continue the insanity this week and pass a budget along partisan lines. Rauner then has the ability to sign, reject or amend the Legislature’s plan it presents him.

Here’s hoping Rauner rejects it and stands firm on promises he made to voters.

Stop the insanity.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That is also true at the bridge table. Better, though, is when declarer can foresee exactly how to make his contract. In this deal, the right line is tough to spot.

How should South plan the play in four spades after West leads a trump?

In a perfect world, North-South would end in three no-trump, which has nine top tricks via five spades, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. But after North transfers into spades, then offers a choice of games with three no-trump, South will be nervous of the spade-suit blockage. If North does not have a side entry, three no-trump will fail.

Note West’s opening salvo. It is dangerous to lead around to a big, balanced hand. A trump rates to be the safest start that he has.

Declarer has four possible losers: one heart, two diamonds and one club.

Maybe clubs will break 3-3, but that is unlikely.

Or perhaps the diamond finesse will work; in theory, this is a 50-50 shot, but not in newspaper columns or classes!

South needs to remember that a ruff in the shorter trump hand eliminates a loser and gains an extra trump trick. He should take the first trick, cash his diamond ace, and continue with the diamond queen.

West wins and plays another trump, but South takes that, crosses to dummy with a club, and ruffs the last diamond in his hand. Then he cruises home. The queen of diamonds is a redcard herring. ******

Mom seeks detour to safety around in-laws’ driving Dear Abby: My in-laws are fabulous. They love me and think the world of our 2-yearold daughter, “Hayley.” They do anything to support us.

Recently, they asked to take Hayley overnight and drive a number of places with her. My concern is the driving part. My father-in-law doesn’t believe in car seats.

On a few occasions he has asked me to just hop in the car with Hayley without a car seat. I refused. Another time, they had a circa-1980 car seat and asked to take Hayley with them to church. When I went to put her in the seat, the buckles wouldn’t work. When I reached over to the other side, the seat fell over. It wasn’t even strapped in.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Now for my biggest fear: My mother-in-law is a notorious distracted driver – she applies makeup, eats food, talks on the phone and texts. I am not comfortable with her taking Hayley in the car with her.

How do I approach this with them? I don’t want to harm our relationship, and I’d like them to spend time with their grandchild independently.

But I can’t put my daughter in a dangerous situation. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

appear to be well founded.

Your “fabulous” in-laws cannot be trusted to transport your little girl.

My first thought was you and your husband could buy them a car seat and have it installed. But if you can’t trust your father-in-law to use it, or your mother-in-law to devote her full attention to her driving when her grandchild is in the car, then the child’s safety must come first. As a mother, your job is to be conscientious, even if it makes you less popular. And your husband should back you up 100 percent.

Dear Abby: My husband is very affectionate. He loves to cuddle, snuggle and sweettalk morning, noon and night.

me – he does it with our cats.

Don’t get me wrong – he’s a good husband, and I get a quick hug and kiss goodbye when I leave for work in the mornings and he holds my hand when we walk. If you haven’t already, you need to tell him what you need in order to feel as loved and cherished as the cats. And if that doesn’t work, you both need marriage counseling because I can’t imagine you living the rest of your life starved for affection. As you said, you’re only 62.
