eyes new location in Morris

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On, off and back on – Greenhouse Group LLC is pursuing a new location in Morris for a medical marijuana facility.

The medical cannabis dispensing company is applying for a conditional permitted use permit to open a medical marijuana dispensary at the former Rockwell Inn restaurant, 2400 W. Route 6 in Morris, across from the Morris Country Club.

“It’s a great location for us and ideal for the community,” Frontline Real Estate Principal Matt Darin said Thursday. “It’s a large building that will allow us to offer all of our well-being services, which isn’t limited to cannabis.”

Darin, a partner in Greenhouse Group, said the group will present its full plan and services at the public hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday during the Morris Planning Commission meeting in the Morris Municipal Services Facility’s council chambers, 700 N. Division St.

Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said the contract to purchase the property is likely contingent on Greenhouse Group acquiring the necessary permits and approval.

Greenhouse Group was approved in early February by the state for a dispensing license to be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties.

In March, the company was set to appear before the planning commission in a public hearing, but postponed its request. No reason was given by representatives to the city, but the proposed location – 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It Again” video store – was met with controversy because of its proximity to Forte Arts Center and another area day care center.

Greenhouse Group was back on the planning commission’s agenda April 29. But that hearing request was withdrawn by Greenhouse Group prior to the meeting.

Michelle Mitchell, owner of Prodigy Kids Christian Home Daycare, 1315 Liberty St., also wrote a letter of objection. A map was provided, showing that her day care was within 1,000 feet of the proposed location.

Darin said he’s excited for the group to be focused on the new prospective location and is looking to be cooperative with the city and community.

The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act prohibits a dispensary from being within 1,000 feet of a pre-existing preschool, elementary or secondary school, day care centers or homes or group day care homes.

“I think they checked (the new location) out and decided they’re far enough away from schools,” Cheshareck said.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There were no caps and gowns at graduation Thursday night as students at Premier Academy in Morris received their certificates, but the celebration was the same.

As Greyson Goode, of Morris, the senior speaker at the ceremony, pointed out, they aren’t your typical kids, it isn’t a typical ceremony, and it’s not your typical school.

“We’re not bad, we lack math skills, the bullies were too much to take,” he said.

“Whatever the differences, they bring us together.”

Goode told the room of graduates and their families that a year ago, he didn’t think he would graduate.

“In fact, I wasn’t sure I wanted to live,” he said. “I felt more welcome here for the few months I was here than I did for three years at my high school.”

He said he’ s always been a writer, since he learned to write, but he’s never wrote a speech, and he wondered why he didn’t listen to his head which screamed “no” when asked to talk.

“They picked the quietest most awkward kid in class,”

He said at his previous school he had been quiet, always walking with his head down, and had been pretty much invisible.

“I had a lot to say, but I never said it,” he said. “I never reached out to my teachers, and they didn’t reach out

to me.”

Prior to the ceremony, Goode said graduating is scary and terrifying. He does know one thing though, he wants to be an English teacher, he wants to be a teacher who makes a difference.

“I had a few teachers who made a difference like Mrs.

Zomboracz, she’s pretty awesome,” he said.

Nicole Yanke, of Morris, finished out her senior year at Premier Academy and said she enjoyed her time there because she was able to work at her own pace on the computer to get the necessary classes done.

“The teachers are understanding about things outside of school, too,” she said. “It feels good to graduate.”

The understanding of the teachers coupled with less pressure and more caring were sentiments echoed among the students who stood in their senior classroom prior to the ceremony.

Some of the 42 graduating seniors walked the stage twice this year, once at their home school and also at Premier.

Joe Kroeger, of Coal City, graduated last week from Coal City High School but also wanted to participate in the graduation at the academy with his friends.

Minooka 201 hosts study sessions on district changes

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Between rolling out a new full-day kindergarten program and hiring a new superintendent, the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Board has some big decisions coming.

In a study session Wednesday night, Board President Jim Satorius addressed the progression of the superintendent search.

Superintendent Al Gegenheimer is retiring, with his contract ending June 5. An interim superintendent will be named until a replacement is found, with a target of July.

Satorius said Dave Love, consultant for the Illinois Association of School Boards hired to conduct the search, said there are 31 applicants for the position, with a cutoff date of May 27.

The board will interview six candidates; three finalists will be interviewed by the board and a community panel.

Gegenheimer said he has a list of 35 people who the board has recommended to develop a community panel, comprised of local clergy, district staff, parents and local business owners.

“This is a problem, especially at Minooka Elementary, where we have quite a few car riders. Buses and cars are already down the road, blocking parking and the traffic trying to get through on the streets,” Satorius said.

“Would it be beneficial to see if the Minooka Police Department could be involved?

They have traffic control knowledge, and would have ideas on how to run this smoothly,” Board Member Ed Cronin said.

Satorius said both high schools have an officer paid by that district to be security all day and then direct traffic at release times, so he wasn’t sure if having police presence would be an additional cost.

“What I am seeing when speaking with the parents who want their child to be in half-day kindergarten, it’s the parent having the issue, not that the child can’t handle a full day.” Palaniuk said.

Palaniuk added that parents have asked if they can switch their child to a full day after the school year has begun. Parents have until the end of the first quarter to do so.

Another issue is the increased number of cars and buses at drop off and pick up, since all kindergarten students now will be dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon.

City council OKs annual organization donations

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The City of Morris will lend a helping hand to several local organizations, with donations ranging from $500 to $55,000.

Morris City Council approved 7-0 Monday the city’s annual organization donations, totaling $173,636 – a $3,500 increase from last year.

The donations largely come out of the city’s Hotel Motel Tax Fund, which collects from a tax on guest stays at Morris hotels.

The last time the city hit $172,000 in donations was 200809, before dipping to around $130,000 in the following three years. The city has increased its donation amount each of the last four years.

“During the recession, our Hotel Motel Tax totals were less so we donated less,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Tuesday. “It’s cyclical.”

The money donated continues to bring in tourism each year, Kopczick said.

The largest donation, as usual, was $55,000 to the Morris Downtown Development Partnership.

Julie Applegate, executive director of MDDP, said Tuesday the donation helps the hosting of the former Liberty Days, now the Liberty Arts Festival, and promotes a series of runs such as the Liberty 5K Run/Walk and helps beautification efforts that include replacing plants and flowers downtown, among other things.

The donation helps with the overall marketing of downtown Morris, Applegate said, and the

last time MDDP requested additional funds was 2012.

The donation to MDDP is followed in total by $19,000 to the Grundy County Corn Festival and $15,000 to the Grundy County Historical Society.

A total of $160,000 will be paid out of the Hotel Motel Tax Fund with the remaining $14,136 coming out of the General Fund.

All amount requests are the same as last year, except for a $5,000 request from the Morris Soccer Association, which hasn’t requested a donation since 2009-10.

MORRIS – Many people have memories of going through their grandmother’s button tin, carefully examining the more unique ones or running their fingers through a cool bunch of them.

Lifelong crafter Donna Weaver appreciates a nice collection of vintage buttons.

“It’s the stories behind them, sorting them and playing with them and putting them back in the tin,” she said.

“And just the smell of the tin.”

Weaver leads the Morris Area Public Library’s adult program, Vintage Crafts, which began Tuesday and runs through the summer. The crafts made at the sessions will be true to the vintage era.

“Vintage items are at least 30 years old,” she said. “You can tell by the styles of the buttons, like the glass buttons and the Bakelite buttons. ... You just don’t see those anymore.”

Weaver brought a large collection of old buttons for those at Tuesday’s class to use to make little pieces of art using vintage salt shakers and wire.

She formed her button collection from estate sales, auctions and from her daughter’s downtown Morris store, True North.

“I just kind of scavenge for them,” she said.

The library’s Adult Services Coordinator, Emily Lombardi, said the program is for anyone interested in crafts and an evening out with others who share the interest. It’s for those with all skill levels.

“We want to get people engaged and involved,” she said.

“We’ll get together and share stories. It’s not just coming and doing the craft. Donna will give some historical background on the items.”

The library has held adult craft events before. A few in Tuesday night’s group participated in ones like, Victorian Crafts. That one required participants to buy their own materials, though. Everything is provided in this one.

“One thing that is important to me is making it affordable,” Weaver said, “then you can take the idea and go make others if you want.”

Morris neighbors Emily Pearson and Ashley Swanson attended the kick-off event.

“We came just for a fun girls’ night,” Pearson said.

“Ashley is crafty, and she’s the one who told me about it.”

Pearson said with two small children at home, it’s difficult to make the time and get the materials to do her own crafts.

“It’s a fun night out,” she said. “This library has a lot of great programs.”

Weaver said her whole family has always enjoyed crafts.

“I have a real heart for vintage,” she said, “and I have a background of crafts.”

Planning firm for county on hold Will be addressed once new administrator has started

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Members of the Grundy County Strategic Planning Committee decided Wednesday night to table the discussion of hiring a firm to help gather information and start drafting a strategic plan for the county.

“We can’t justify a non-budgeted expenditure when we asked the elected officials and department heads to cut their budgets by 3 percent,” David Nelson, Grundy County Board vice chairman, said Thursday.

He said in addition to the costs associated with the idea, the county will have a new administrator starting June 1 and believed it was only fair to wait until Doug Pryor starts to get his input moving forward.

When the board started the Strategic Planning Committee, the concept was to have a committee dedicated to strategic planning within the county.

David Nelson Grundy County Board vice chairman a broad first idea of working toward making the county a good place to work for employees. They wanted to send out employee surveys and engage employees in dialogue, but the labor attorney for the county advised it wasn’t a good idea.

The committee moved forward and wanted to work on the engagement of the taxpayers and get more people involved in county meetings, whether they come in person or watch online.

Committee Chairwoman Ann Gill researched and

found some planners who have worked for municipalities within the county, and the names were divided for members to reach out and discuss services they offer.

Nelson presented two proposals to the committee, one from DAU Consulting, and another from HueLife, which proposed vastly different options at amounts between $6,000 and $20,000.

The committee decided once Pryor starts it would like to see what his experience with strategic planning is and ask him for his opinion on direction.

Board Member Debra Jo Kinsella said she believes the decision to table the hiring discussion for now was the right option.

“I think it was prudent and everyone is on the same page,” she said.

Nelson said there will be a budget line for strategic planning in the fiscal year 2016 budget, and he would like to wait until the money is budgeted.

Chris Mehochko, regional superintendent of schools for Grundy and Kendall Counties, spoke at the graduation, as well, explaining how he fought to get the alternative school in the community to give the students an opportunity to graduate.

Roberta “Bobbi” L. Chitwood, of Morris, passed away peacefully at Morris Hospital with loved ones by her side on May 19, 2015.

Born August 5, 1952 in Morris, she was the daughter of Robert L. and the late Lorraine (Crumb) Sjostrom Bottomley.

Bobbi was educated in the Morris schools and graduated from Morris High School with the Class of 1971.

Born December 11, 1924 in Long Point, Michigan. Grace Elizabeth was a daughter of the late Maurice and Cora (Shananaquette) Fenner.

She was raised in and educated in Topinabee, Michigan, and on November 10, 1947, Grace married Clarence R. Hutton.

She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Coal City.

Grace loved to garden and was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Survivors include her children, Sharon (Roy) Merkel of Tamaroa, IL, Delores (Jack) Bajt of Manhattan, Patricia (the late James) Alsip of Channahon, Geraldine Hutton of Joliet and Mary (Greg) Hill of Joliet; seven grandchildren, Curtis (Kelly) Alsip, Corey (Danielle) Alsip, Tracey (Ben) Bish, Kristy (Justin) Genis, Stephanie (Bill) Condon, Adam (Felicia) Hill, Alyssa Hill, Chris (Donna) Merkel and Emilie (the late Clinton) Merkel; five great grandchildren, Evan Alsip, Delaney Alsip, Jillian Alsip, Lana Genis and Bailee Merkel, with another expected, and numerous nieces and nephews.

MORRIS – Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers announces the next meeting of its new Heart Failure Support Group from 6 to 7 p.m. June 4 in Whitman Assembly Room 2 at Morris Hospital, 150 W. High Street, Morris.

The support group is for anyone who has been diagnosed with heart failure, a chronic condition that occurs when the heart muscle doesn’t pump blood as well as it should.

Certain lifestyle changes can help improve the quality of life of people with heart failure.

Each support group meeting will include a 15-minute educational component, with this month’s topic addressing “Exercise and Heart Failure.”

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois residents have until today to register for a chance to win a weather alert radio through the “Weather Alert Radios Save Lives” contest sponsored by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Emergency Services Management Association.

MORRIS – To ensure safety in processing low-acid food in the home canning process, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that pressure canner dial gauges are tested annually.

Drusilla Banks, nutrition and wellness educator, will offer free precision testing of pressure canner dial gauges at the University of Illinois Extension office at Grundy County. Banks will be testing gauges for accuracy during walk-in clinic hours from 9 a.m. to noon June 12.

ICC Memorial Day Mass planned at cemetery

Missionary to speak at First United Methodist

MORRIS – The First United Methodist Church of Morris, 118 W. Jackson St., invites you to come and hear missionary Karen Ujereh. She will be at the church to speak at the 6 p.m. Saturday worship service.

Ujereh is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as director of the United Methodist Malawi Microfinance Program based in Blantyre, Malawi. The program trains men and women in small business development, preparing them to receive loans from funds placed with an international microfinance agency.

MORRIS – A summer children’s event called Everest Vacation Bible School will be hosted from June 15-19 at First Christian Church.

At Everest, children discover what it means to hold on to God’s mighty power in everyday life.

Clock ticking to learn Open Meetings Act One of the positives to come out of the Gov. Rod Blagojevich corruption scandal of 2008-09 is greater attention to openness and transparency in Illinois government.

Reform legislation regarding the Open Meetings Act put greater responsibility on members of public bodies, such as municipal councils, school and county boards, and the like, to learn, understand, and adhere to state law when conducting meetings.

Since Jan. 1, 2012, all members of public bodies have been required to go online and take training on the Open Meetings Act through a curriculum developed and administered by the Public Access Counselor’s office, which is part of the Illinois Attorney General’s office.

Newly elected members, such as those who won their seats in the April 7 election, have 90 days to complete that training. The clock starts ticking the day they take the oath of office.

Numerous public bodies across Grundy County had new members elected in April. The training those new members must complete will give them a working knowledge of their responsibilities under the Open Meetings Act. They will learn various legal definitions, requirements for legal public meetings, including advance notices and agendas, how meetings can be properly closed, what can be properly discussed in closed sessions, requirements for minutes and verbatim recordings, how the Open Meetings Act applies to electronic gatherings, enforcement of the act, and the role of the Public Access Counselor.

Members of public bodies need to remember the people have a right to be informed about how public business is conducted. In other words, deliberations and actions are to be conducted openly.

For people unaccustomed to public service, those concepts might be foreign. But to ensure honest, aboveboard government, they are vital.

They will come away from it better informed and better prepared to fulfill their new public service roles.

Striving to save Iraqi and Syrian churches The small chapel in ancient Dura, near the Euphrates River in western Syria, is not a spectacular historical site that tourists from around the world travel to see.

However, the diggings yielded priceless insights into life in an early Christian community, and a synagogue as well, in the days before Dura was abandoned in 257 A.D. The frescoes, for example, include an image of Christ the Good Shepherd – one of the earliest surviving images of Jesus in Christian art.

Then came the Islamic State.

“Religious heritage sites throughout ISIS-held areas of Iraq and Syria have been suffering enormous damage and face constant risk,” said Katharyn Hanson of the University of Pennsylvania Museum, in a recent House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing.

“The targeted extermination of religious minorities by ISIS results in mass death and also the erasure of the outward manifestations of the minority religious culture, threatening the continuity of their religious practices.”

She gave this verdict on what has happened in the “Pompeii of the Desert.” The Dura-Europos site “has been extensively looted and is currently under ISIS control,”

VIEWS Terry Mattingly she said. Scientists estimate that “some 76 percent of the site’s surface area within the ancient city walls has now been looted.”

The hearing’s goal, of course, was documenting what is happening to flesh-and-blood believers – especially women and children – in minority faith communities inside the borders of the Islamic State, not just the ancient ruins and holy sites that symbolize their deep roots in the region. As Jacqueline Isaac of the Roads of Success organization testified, “We cherish ethnic and religious diversity. ISIS hates it.”

The most anticipated testimony came from Sister Diana Momeka of the Dominicans of St. Catherine of Siena convent in Mosul, who was the only member of the delegation of Iraqi religious leaders invited to testify who was initially denied a visa by the U.S. State Department.

She was the only Christian from Iraq in the group.

So far, she said, 120,000 people have been driven into Iraq’s Kurdistan region as refugees, where aid from Iraqi and Kurdish officials has been “modest and slow” at

best. By early August last summer, church bells across the Nineveh Plain were silent for the first time since the 7th century.

In addition to private homes, the Islamic State continues to seize ancient churches and monasteries – such as St. George’s in Mosul and the 4th-century monastery in Sara. These institutions often contain libraries with irreplaceable manuscripts from the early days of Christian life.

“We have realized that ISIS’ plan is to evacuate the land of Christians and wipe the earth clean of any evidence that we ever existed,” the nun told the committee.

Someone will have to defeat the Islamic State, she said. Then, support must come from somewhere to help survivors from religious minorities return home and rebuild, as well as try to salvage what is left of the sites, art and culture that represent centuries of life and faith in the Nineveh Plain. Someone will have to urge the living, on both sides, to relate to each other in ways rooted in tolerance instead of violence.

Coal City’s Littleton outduels Reed-Custer’s Headrick

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Anyone who thinks that a 1-0 baseball game is boring wasn’t at Coal City on Thursday.

With runs – and baserunners in general – at a premium with ace pitchers Brad Littleton of Coal City and Brent Headrick of Reed-Custer on the mound, any scoring threat carried a large portion of significance. In the end, Coal City was able to push a run across, and that was enough for Littleton and Coaler defense as Coal City (29-5) beat the Comets (2312) in the Class 2A Coal City Regional semifinal.

Littleton himself scored the game’s only run. He led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. At the plate was Joe Quinn, who had struck out the previous time at bat, one of 11 strikeouts recorded by the left-handed Headrick. Quinn got a 2-1 fastball from Headrick and poked it into the gap in left-center for a double, scoring Littleton with the game’s only run.

“In my first at-bat, I had my hands up too much,” Quinn said. “The second one, there was a runner on third and no outs. I got a fastball and I was just trying to get it in the air deep enough to score the run.

“Once we got a run, with Brad on the mound, we felt pretty good.”

The Coalers, who play for the regional title Saturday at 11 a.m. against the winner of Friday’s Bishop McNamara-Herscher game, nearly broke it open after Quinn’s double.

Nick Micetich singled to center to put runners on first and third and Jared Skubic walked to load the bases with no outs and it looked like a big inning for Coal City.

Headrick had other ideas.

He induced a popout to shortstop, then struck out the next two batters to escape the jam with no further damage.

“That shows what kind of competitor Brent is,” ReedCuster coach Jerry Cougill said. “You see what a kid is made of in those situations, and that was just as impressive as what Littleton did.”

“We knew it would be a 1-0 or 2-1 game,” Littleton said.

“Brent is a good pitcher. We were just hoping to get some guys on base and get them in.

My fastball was there most of the game, and my curve

worked well. It was my out pitch a lot of times today. Usually my change is my out pitch, but my curve was today.”

Reed-Custer had a threat in the second, when Jordan Walden doubled to right with one out and went to third on a passed ball. The Comets attempted a suicide squeeze, but the batter missed the bunt and Walden was tagged out in a rundown between third and home. In the fifth, Eddie Wilkins led off with a single and Walden followed with a walk. A bunt went right back to Littleton on the mound, and he threw to third to force pinch-runner Tyler Richey. A grounder to second moved the runners to second and third, but Litteton got out of the inning with a strikeout.

In the top of the seventh, Travis Schoonover led off with a single and, an out later, attempted to steal second. He beat the throw, but overslid the bag and Coal City shortstop Nick Micetich tagged him out. Walden then singled to center before Littleton ended the game with a strikeout.

second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t add any insurance runs as Headrick, who reached 87 on the gun, struck out the next two batters.

“We were a little frustrated that we didn’t score more, but Headrick is a good pitcher,” Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said. “He’s a lefty, he’s 6-4 and he has a great changeup that makes his fastball look that much better.

“We did the little things well. We covered the bunt and got the lead runner, we got the guy in a rundown. And Nick Micetich, we preach to keep the tag on the guy. He did that, and when he slid off the bag, he was out. And Joe Quinn misplayed a fly ball, but he came through later with the big hit in the gap for us.

“How many regionals are there where both teams have to use their aces in the semifinals? This one is stacked with four quality teams in the semis. We’ll probably see more offense in the title game, because I would imagine both teams tomorrow will have to use their aces, too.”

This is Burton’s third time in her three-year high school career that she will be at the state meet, and she will be competing in the long jump, the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. As a freshman, Mayberry is making her first state appearance, also competing in the long jump.

“I am definitely nervous,” said Burton, who enters the weekend with the second-best long jump in the field at 17-11, trailing only Alison Woerner of Chatham-Glenwood’s mark of 18-4.75. “There’s a lot more pressure. When I was a freshman, I was just glad to be there.

“Both of these girls have been getting PRs [personal records] every week or two weeks as the season has gone on,” she said. “That’s what we want. If both of them can do it again this week, we will be happy. If they improve on what they have done, then we’ll be happy with whatever place they get.”

Burton’s family will be moving over the summer, so this is her last chance to represent MCHS. “This is my last year here and I want to leave a mark,” she said.

Morris girls soccer team falls to JCA in regional STAFF REPORTS NEW LENOX – The regional title streak for the Morris girls soccer team ended Wednesday when the Redskins lost 5-1 to Joliet Catholic Academy at the Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Regional.

Katherine Gallick scored on an assist from Amanda Grant early in the second half for Morris, which had won two consecutive regional crowns.

“Overall, it was cold, raining and wet turf,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said. “Things didn’t work out for us.

Morris summer camp: The Morris Coop Swim Team is hosting its swim camp Mondays through Thursdays from June 8 to July 9 at the District 101 Rec Center Pool.

Camp is open to any incoming student in grades 9-12 who attends Morris, Minooka, Coal City or Seneca High Schools.
