• Addison D. Shannon, 20, was arrested by Morris police Tuesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

• Richard Byrnes, 31, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence. He also was cited for improper lane usage.

• Robert A. Skinner, 51, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on a charge of possession of cannabis, 2.5 to 10 grams. He was given a June 8 court date.

• Scott E. Spiezio, 42, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a Grundy County warrant for violating probation. He was given a June 1 court date.

• Donna L. Tortorelli, 53, of Minooka, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Friday on a charge of driving under the influence. She also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and using the wrong lane. She was given a June 8 court date.

• Marcus H. Hrpcha, 22, of Braidwood, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s police Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence. He also was cited for improper lane usage and failure to dim headlights. He was given a June 15 court date.

• Samantha Sallese, 27, was arrested by Minooka police and booked into the Grundy County on Jail on Saturday on a charge of violating an order of protection.

Republic Services officials went before the Morris City Council on Monday to request an alteration to pickup map to change from a four-day to a five-day schedule. The representatives told the council the change would better serve residents and the company.

Although nothing is final, Operations Manager Robert Schwichtenberg said Tuesday residents would receive an informational brochure if an agreement is finalized with the city. There also would be customer service available via telephone and email for anyone with questions.

requested from Republic Services that in addition to the brochures, a notice be placed on bins prior to the start of possible schedule changes.

Schwichtenberg said it would be a mutual benefit for residents and Republic Services, but declined further comment Tuesday because nothing is final.

A total of 983 stops would have pickup day changes, if the proposed map change is made, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said at the council meeting.

Kopczick said Tuesday that downtown garbage pickup would still take place on Mondays, which is convenient given the city’s many weekend festivities.

“Republic is working to make it more feasible for their company and offer the lowest rate possible to customers,” Kopczick said Tuesday.

CHANNAHON – As his young son’s playful voice echoed through the gymnasium, Ken Allen spoke about his own father, who died when he was just 3.

“My memories are so short,” an emotional Allen said to the crowd gathered Wednesday morning at Minooka Community High School South Campus in Channahon.

“It is difficult to know if something is real or made up.”

Allen explained to those in attendance at the Grundy County Law Enforcement Managers Association’s annual memorial service that his son isn’t much younger than Allen was when the boy’s grandfather, Morris firefighter James Allen, died fighting a fire 30 years ago. The annual service honors fallen police and firefighters.

“I’ve struggled with ‘why’ for years,” Allen said. “Today gives me memories that allow me to create one of my father as a real hero.”

James Allen was 6 feet 6 inches tall, his son said, and was noticed when he walked in a room not just for his height, but also for his personality. He

Habitat for Humanity breaks ground

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Shanna Enger was going through papers her 7-year-old son brought home from school when she saw a flyer about an informational meeting for Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity to discuss home ownership.

“He brought the flyer home from school and I thought it would be awesome, so I went to the meeting,” Enger said.

On Wednesday night, Shanna, her son Bryson and daughter Bridget Enger put shovel to dirt along with members of Habitat for Humanity and local officials, and scooped out the first shovel full on the land where their new home will be constructed.

Enger is a lifelong Morris resident who has worked for the past 16 years at R-Place Restaurant where she serves as a prep cook. She and her children have resided in a two-bedroom apartment, that while adequate, is small.

Bridget, who is 11, will soon be in her own bedroom for the first time.

“I think it’s going to be awesome,” she said. “We are having our own rooms and there will be two bathrooms so we don’t have to share anymore.”

She’s already started planning her own domain, which she thinks she’ll paint turquoise.

Continued from page 3 shot and killed Feb. 3, 1935, when he interrupted a kidnapping and robbery in progress.

Roseland’s great-grandchildren, Adam and Emma Roseland, sang the national anthem and “God Bless America” at the event.

Roseland’s grandson, Keith Roseland, said his father Wayne, who died last year, would have loved to see the portion of Route 47 dedicated to Clarence Roseland, as he drove past it to work every day.

The other fallen Morris officer also honored with a road dedication and at the memorial Wednesday was Marshal Enoch Hopkins, who was shot and killed Sept. 14, 1878, while attempting to arrest two drunken and disorderly men.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite honored Hopkins, saying he created the model of a Morris police officer.

“He was a great and honorable man,” Dite said.

At the time, Hopkins’ funeral was the highest attended in Morris history.

“The words ‘thank you’ will never be enough,” Dite said.

A portion of Route 47 will soon be dedicated to fallen firefighter Allen, too.

Also honored was Channahon firefighter Kenneth Frayne, who died in a multi-agency rescue drill in October 2011. Channahon Fire Protection District Chief John Petrakis spoke in memory of Frayne. Admonis said to the crowd, full of agencies across Grundy County, that few are

meant to do law enforcement.

Just like the military, he said, they are warriors in their communities.

He thought of a conversation he had with a colleague, about the burden that comes with seeing things in the line of duty that people aren’t supposed to see.

“Some things are kept inside and never spoke of,” Admonis said.

Admonis encouraged those in law enforcement to not be deterred by negative media attention of the actions of some police officers.

“Less than 1 percent of us get in trouble,” Admonis said.

“The rest of us play by the rules.”

The Third District Appellate Court released an opinion last month stating neither the old VAC, run by Elton Monson, nor the new VAC, run

Court opinion says Grundy has no legal VAC

GROWS garden begins second season MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Grundy Resource of Opportunity for Wellness and Sustainability garden’s second season has begun.

The planning stages of the GROWS garden has been completed and on May 16 the cleanup and planting was planned to be done, according to a news release from the Grundy County Health Department.

“I think it’s a tremendous program,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said. “It gives the folks in the community a chance to understand and be part of Habitat for Humanity.

It becomes more than the perception of someone getting a house, they see the work that goes into it.”

Habitat for Humanity works with low-income families to build homes and provide no-interest mortgages.

As part of the program, the families perform labor on their own homes and help with the construction of other homes as part of the requirement to contribute 400 hours of “sweat equity” toward construction and at fundraising events.

The city purchased five acres of the paperboard property from Grundy County in April 2009. In an agreement with Habitat for Humanity, it will sell the lots to the organization as it has funding available.

Wilkinson said they currently receive about $20,000 a year in mortgage payments that are used to construct new homes.

That money coupled with donations makes the program available.

Report cites spike in fatalities over Memorial Day weekend

bokon@shawmedia.com With cookouts and swimming pool openings right around the corner, safety might be the last thing on the minds of the estimated 33 million Americans expected to hit the road this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

But the reality is that more people will share the roadway – increasing the chances for traffic fatalities and injury.

AAA Chicago is predicting about 1.7 million Illinoisans will travel by car this weekend – representing a 5.3 percent increase from 2014.

Nationwide, 37.2 million people are expected to travel via car or plane, a 4.7 percent increase from the 35.5 million people who traveled last year and the highest travel volume for the holiday in 10 years, according to AAA. More than 380 people in the U.S. could be killed in traffic accidents over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to a recent analysis from the National Safety Council.

The NSC defines the holiday weekend as the period from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Fatalities on Illinois roadways

So far in 2015, fatal crashes in Illinois also are up this year compared to 2014. As of Wednesday, 307 people have died in traffic crashes on Illinois roadways, according to preliminary data posted on IDOT’s website. That’s 21 deaths more compared to the same time in 2014.

The National Safety Council estimates 383 traffic fatalities and another 46,300 medically consulted injuries from vehicle collisions may occur over the traditional summer kickoff weekend. Cellphone-related crashes are up for the third consecutive year and now account for nearly 30 percent of all crashes, according to a new analysis released Monday by the National Safety Council.

The estimate includes crashes involving drivers texting or talking on hand-held or hands-free cellphones.

Illinois police departments reported more than 6,000 crashes from 2009 to 2013 where some form of driver distraction involved a cellphone, according to the Illinois Tollway. Of those, 33 were fatal.

Gas prices have risen in many places as the holiday weekend approaches.

“I don’t like what I’m seeing,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com.

DeHaan said about two dozen Joliet-area gas stations had raised prices to $2.99 a gallon

by Wednesday morning.

Another four had already topped $3. However, there is good news.

DeHaan said the price increase is not likely to last.

He expects prices to drop back below $3 a gallon and stay there through the summer.

“It should be the cheapest summer for driving since 2009,” he said.

It’s already a lot cheaper than last Memorial Day. AAA Travel earlier this month said the Illinois average price for gasoline was down from $3.63 a gallon in May 2014.

DeHaan does not expect gas prices to reach $3.63 this summer.

New day rising FORT WAYNE, Ind. – “I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least.”

It wasn’t because Barack Obama was recently critiquing religious conservatives that I thought of this quote from Dorothy Day. I had arrived at the University of Saint Francis here for a conference on Dorothy Day and the Catholic Church. The words of Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, have been constantly in the air.

Meanwhile, at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., President Obama was appearing on a panel at an anti-poverty summit.

At that summit, the president accused religious groups of caring more about issues such as abortion and protection of marriage than poverty.

This the same president, of course, who chose to unnecessarily pick a fight with the faithful during the Obamacare controversy, forcing them to violate their consciences or face stiff penalties. This is the president who accused Catholic bishops and others of bearing false witness, as he put it, when they opposed the inclusion of abortion coverage in that same healthcare law.

And commentators were rightly quick to set the record straight about the enormous good that faith-based groups and churches do in America and the world today.

But, perhaps with Dorothy Day’s quote in mind, I also find myself unable to dismiss Obama’s comments.

Robert Putnam, the Harvard professor who famously wrote “Bowling Alone,” was also a part of the panel, and in the days before it he gave an interview to The Washington Post in which he offered a similar critique, saying, in part: “[The Church has] been entirely focused on issues of

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez homosexuality and contraception and not at all focused on issues of poverty.”

I think, in particular, of victims of sex trafficking who have been made to suffer on account of “reproductive health” politics.

But it is also a fact that Christians have internalized some of the secularization in the air and do not live the radical lives that the Gospels mandate.

One of the speakers at this conference, Ben Wilson, an assistant director at the Summer Service Learning Program at the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame, talked about Dorothy Day’s “genius,” explaining: “Dorothy’s unceasing effort to ever more faithfully love God and neighbor underscores the lifelong journey that becoming loving requires.”

Pope Francis is fond of pointing out that he is a sinner. It is this unworthiness that draws Christians to Jesus Christ as Savior. For the rest of the world to know that we are works in progress and need to do more and give more – this is not a bad thing. And with Dorothy Day in mind, I might even thank President Obama for his criticism. I’d hope that he’d consider the work of the Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious charitable groups whose efforts he has endangered, too.

Peter Gay, intellectual historian, dead at age 91

By HILLEL ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Peter Gay, a popular and prize-winning historian who meticulously traced the rise of secular Western thought, from a prize-winning history of the Enlightenment to a best-selling biography of Sigmund Freud, has died.

Gay died Tuesday at his home in Manhattan, his stepdaughter Elizabeth Glazer told The Associated Press. He was 91 and died of “old age,” Glazer said.

The German-born Gay wrote more than 25 books, including a five-part series on the 19th-century bourgeois and two volumes on the Enlightenment.

He also wrote about Mozart, 19th-century fiction, 20th-century cinema, and, in his highly regarded “Weimar Culture: The Outsider as Insider,” about art and intellectual life in Germany before Hitler’s rise.

Western Europe was the setting for much of his work and Freud was Gay’s recurring subject. An urbane and nonbelieving Jew, like Freud, Gay found in him not only a

compelling life and body of work, but an approach to history.

Gay studied psychoanalytic training at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis and he advocated Freudian techniques for historical scholarship, rejecting fears that the field would be reduced to formulas about childhood desires and neuroses.

“Freud was not a historian, but he knew that men’s minds, even their unconscious minds, change across time and differ across class,” Gay once wrote.

“Concern for individuality, that mark of the historian, pervades all of Freud’s writings.”

Gay wrote several works on Freud and summed up his findings in the best-selling “Freud: A Life For Our Time.” Freud’s integrity had been questioned and his theories challenged, but Gay praised his “long and unrivaled career as the archaeologist of the mind.”

In “Modernism: The Lure of Heresy,” published in 2007, Gay invoked Freud as a hidden influence upon some of the most important artists of the past century.

“If much of the Freudian view of the human animal

present and past appears to be fairly commonplace today, that is so because for a century much of the respectable world has made its progress toward him,” Gay wrote in the book’s preface.

Gay is also credited, through a series of essays and books in the 1950s and ‘60s, with changing the image of Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire from impractical idealists to astute visionaries able to work within the systems they helped overturn.

Although criticized for focusing too narrowly on Western Europe, Gay helped define the era itself as a completion of the revival of ancient Greek culture that began with the Renaissance.

Gay won the National Book Award in 1967 for “The Enlightenment: An Interpretation. The Rise of Modern Paganism” and received a gold medal in 1996 from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In 2004, he was given a lifetime achievement award by the American Historical Association, which praised him as a scholar who “incarnates the life of the mind.” A longtime professor at Yale University,

he retired from the school in 1993.

He was born Peter Froehlich in Berlin in 1923, his father “a striving bourgeoisie” and self-made man, his mother a clerk and “undisputed beauty” who suffered from tuberculosis and from psychosomatic illnesses that made a lasting impression on her son. Gay was a perpetually underweight child who preferred books to food, giving in to such superstitions as believing that a cherry pit could cause appendicitis. He read the Westerns of German author Karl May, and was later deeply impressed and influenced by the prose of Ernest Hemingway and E.B. White.

Unintended inspiration came from an anti-Semitic teacher who, when Gay was around 12, declared that “Jews always exaggerate.”

“I have often wondered whether my unremitting search for precision in my writing was fueled by this outburst,” Gay wrote in the memoir “My German Question: Growing up in Nazi Berlin.”

The Froehlichs were assimilated, but no more welcome than other Jews in Hitler’s Germany. The family fled in 1939, first to Cuba and then to

the United States. Gay, who changed his last name upon becoming an American citizen, attended the University of Colorado as an undergraduate and received a master’s and Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Gay wrote in a fluid, assured style and drew upon a vast knowledge of history, culture, philosophy and psychology. In his memoir, however, he noted that his extensive scholarship on European culture included little about the Nazis.

“The truth is, I must confess, that I have deliberately refused to dwell on the mass murder of Europe’s Jews,” he wrote. “We all have our defenses to help us get through life and these happen to be mine. I am not proud of them, but I see no need to apologize for them.”

Gay taught history at Columbia from 1962-69, then joined Yale as a professor of comparative and intellectual European history.

In 1959, he married Ruth Slotkin, who had three children from a previous marriage to the sociologist Nathan Glazer. Ruth Gay, an award-winning author of books about Jewish life, died in 2006.

‘Happy’ Rockefeller, widow of former vice president, dies

By FRANK ELTMAN The Associated Press Margaretta “Happy” Rockefeller, the widow of former U.S. Vice President and New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and one of the first women to speak publicly about her breast cancer in the 1970s, has died. She was 88.

Happy Rockefeller, who earned her nickname as a child because of her pleasant personality, died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday at her home in Tarrytown, New York, said family spokesman Fraser Seitel. She had suffered from a brief illness.

“She was blessed with great common sense and insight into human beings and human nature,” said longtime friend Richard Parsons, a senior adviser at Providence Equity Partners. “I thought she was

extraordinary.”

Both she and the New York governor were divorced when they married in 1963. That was seen as scandalous at the time, and political pundits blamed the marriage for Nelson Rockefeller’s failure to secure the 1964 Republican presidential nomination. At that time, no divorced candidate had ever won the presidency; Ronald Reagan became the only divorced president when he was elected in 1980.

After her husband served four terms as New York’s governor, he was named by President Gerald Ford to serve as vice president after Richard Nixon’s resignation in the Watergate scandal in 1974.

Shortly after being chosen, Happy Rockefeller was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent two mastectomies.

A well-known socialite for

many causes, Happy Rockefeller served as chairman of the board for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. In 1991, she was appointed as a public delegate to the United Nations

by President George H. W. Bush.

“People at the U.N. knew her and wanted her advice and she was prepared to educate herself on many subjects,” said former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering. “A lot of my fellow senior diplomats considered it a real honor to meet her, and she always responded very positively.”

Philanthropic activities included support for the Philadelphia Orchestra’s annual visits to China. She also supported the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York City, the Central Park Conservancy and Historic Hudson Valley.

Born Margaretta Large Fitler on June 9, 1926, she often spoke of being a proud descendant of Gen. George Gordon Meade, who commanded Union forces at the Battle of Gettysburg. She graduated in 1944 from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and married Dr. James Slater Murphy in 1948. The couple had four children, three of whom survive. She divorced Murphy about a month before marrying Rockefeller in May 1963. They had two sons.

In a statement, the family said Happy Rockefeller “above all, was dedicated to her immediate and extended family and greatly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She had a firm belief in the importance of family and the nurturing, support, and perspective it can provide to its members.”

Ortiz is a retired Morris optometrist. I Care is an organization that works to improve vision and health for those less fortunate. I Care volunteers travel to other countries providing glasses, hearing aids and other medical supplies to people in need.

These glasses had been donated by local residents to area Lions Clubs and other organizations, then cleaned and processed by students at Morris Community High School and Marquette Academy of Ottawa.

Etienne was born in Haiti, and is a survivor of the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010. As a result of the earthquake he lost his left leg.

At that point, he realized his life needed to have a different purpose, which would be to serve others and let God use him for the good of the people.

With the help of an orthopedic surgeon who came to Haiti, Etienne was then able to come to the United States, according to the release.

While there are more than 10 million people in Haiti, Ortiz and Gutierrez learned there are only 60 eye doctors to provide care. In the city of Nippes, for example, where Eyeglasses for Haiti has held a clinic, more than 200,000 people have no resident doctor. Many travel days to get to a clinic that Eyeglasses for Haiti set up for four or five days.

Etienne will be going back

to Haiti in August with an optometrist from Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

“With the support of generous friends throughout the United States who believe that I can have a huge positive impact on Haiti, I have been able to return to Haiti countless times over the past two years for humanitarian trips and to participate in research in order to establish institutions and programs to improve the quality of life of my people,” Etienne said in the release.

Student of the Month

Lauren Hickle is the daughter of Tom Hickle and Dawn Schaibley of Seneca. She is a senior and plans to attend Illinois State University after graduation to double major in theater education and music performance. Hickle is a member of the drama club, chorus, and band. She recently starred in musical performances as Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz” and Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes.”

Role Model of the Month

Caleb Miller is the son of Jim Blalock and Eileen Miller of Seneca. He is a junior and plans to attend the University of Minnesota after graduation in order to become a psychiatrist.

Minooka tops Morris in shortened contest

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Whenever Morris and Minooka get together in any sporting event, there’s excitement.

That excitement was cut short at Wednesday’s softball game, as the weather forced the game between the Redskins and Indians to be halted in the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied 3-3. Since rules dictate that the game revert to the last completed inning, Minooka gets credit with a 3-2 win, as Morris scored the tying run in the top of the fifth.

Regardless of the outcome, both teams were happy to just get some innings in against one another, since this game was a rescheduled version of one that was rained out May 8.

“The girls really wanted to play this game,” Minooka coach Mark Brown said.

“When it got rained out the first time, they were telling me, ‘You have to reschedule it,’ They like playing against Morris, but I guess Mother Nature didn’t want us to play this year.”

With a steady drizzle of mixed rain and sleet prior the game, the field was in good enough condition to play, and the game started right on time. Both pitchers – Minooka’s Alyssa Hajduk and Morris’ Abby Burns – dominated the early action, as there was only one baserunner through the first three innings, a walk to Minooka’s Caity Bell.

The highlight of the first three innings was a defensive gem turned in by Morris shortstop Janelle Brehm in the bottom of the third.

With one out, Minooka’s Alexa Zito grounded a ball to the hole between short and third. Brehm dove and backhanded the ball before turning and throwing to first from her knees just in time to get Zito out at first.

“That was a great play by Janelle,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “At that point of the game, there hadn’t been many runners on, so to keep a runner off base was big.”

Morris hitters in the fourth, making it 11 straight she had set down. Morris’ Emily Moore then connected for a double to left-center before Ashley Phelps lined a home run over the center field fence to put Morris ahead 2-0.

“She [Hajduk] is a good pitcher,” Lowery said. “We haven’t faced a riseball pitcher

like her very often this year, so it took us a while to adjust and have the discipine to not swing at anything above our hands. Once we went through the lineup once, we figured it out and hit her better.”

The Indians (16-12) had a quick answer in their half of the fourth. Hajduk led off with a walk before the heart of the

order made its presence felt.

“Alyssa has been dominant for us lately,” Brown said.

“Their pitcher [Burns] had us off-balance with her change of speeds, but we were able to string together some nice hits.”

With one out in the top of the fifth, Morris’ Taya Torkelson doubled and went to third on a passed ball. After a popout, Torkelson scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-3.

“They beat us pretty good last year,” Lowery said. “I was pretty happy to have a close game with them this year. The seniors came into this with kind of a chip on their shoulder and it was a fun five innings that we played.

“Hopefully, we can have that attitude when the postseason starts next week.”

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: MINOOKA 25-22-25, PLAINFIELD CENTRAL 18-25-23

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Minooka’s boys volleyball team had a chance to clinch at least a share of the Southwest Prairie Conference title Tuesday but lost a home match.

As a result, the stakes were increased Wednesday when the Indians travelled to Plainfield Central for a winner-take-all clash for the outright championship.

In a preview of a Memorial Day’s Minooka Regional quarterfinal match between the teams, the Indians edged the Wildcats 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 to capture their fourth straight SPC title.

“If you’re going to have a game that boils down a conference championship, which was the goal of both teams, talk about an exciting one,” Indians coach Janel Grzetich said.

“The intensity was there on both sides. On Monday, we’ll see them again and I wouldn’t be shocked if this happens again. I was so proud of my boys with the way that they played. They wanted it, but you could also see that was going

on on the other side of the net, too.”

Leading the way for the Indians (22-12, 12-2) was Brandon Baranski, who had 21 kills.

Danny Beaudin added nine kills and four blocks, Shane Chetney added 32 assists and four blocks and Grant Ooms chipped in with three kills, three aces and two blocks.

In the finale, Minooka used three straight kills from Beaudin to grab a 17-13 lead but Central (11-3) tied it at 21 after kills from Noah Randall and Gage Wuestenfeld.

The Indians, who didn’t lose and SPC road match, closed out the win with two kills from Baranski and another from Beaudin.

“It was great to have the game in our hands so that we could determine our own destiny,” Beaudin said. “We really came together and worked as hard as we could today. It was a great game and the whole time it was very close and back-andforth.

“We’re a very young team and everyone says next year, but our team does not believe that. We believe in this year and right here and right now.”

G-S Wilmington moves to regional final STAFF REPORTS SOUTH WILMINGTON – It wasn’t as easy as the score suggests, but the Gardner-South Wilmington softball team will defend its regional title after beating Illinois Lutheran 11-3 in the semifinals of the Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Regional on Tuesday.

Top-seeded G-SW (21-8) trailed, 3-2, entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but exploded for nine runs in that inning to give winning pitcher Emily Foley the cushion she needed, and then some.

Lexi Posing highlighted the uprising with a grand slam, while Maranda Residori (double, triple, two RBIs), Sophie Barna (double, RBI) and Sydney Perkins (RBI) all had two hits.

Foley went the full seven innings, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out seven.

“It doesn’t have to be pretty,” GSW coach Jon Posing said.

Hawks look to capitalize on grueling Game 2

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Never mind the sore feet, the achy legs, the heavy arms. Professional athletes these days know how to prepare for a game, how to manage themselves during the game, and how to recover afterward. Every calorie and electrolyte gets replaced, and a small army of athletic trainers and therapists are there to work out the lactic acid and push past the cramps.

By the time the puck drops at the United Center on Thursday night and the Game 3 adrenaline kicks in, the physical effects of Tuesday’s epic triple-overtime game in Anaheim – the longest game in Blackhawks history – really shouldn’t have too much of an impact. Besides, both teams went through the same ordeal.

The mental effects, on the other hand, are very much in question. The Ducks are a confident bunch, with a fair amount of postseason experience. But can they put Tuesday’s 3-2 loss – a game in which they hit four posts in overtime, and had the game on their sticks at least a half-dozen times – behind them, just 42 hours later, in front of a rabid

Chicago crowd against a supremely confident Hawks team coming off yet another monster victory?

“We’ve done it all year,” a defiant Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said.

“I would be more surprised if we weren’t able to rebound and play a really great game than if it went the other way around.

I’ve been with this group for a

long time now. You can see it.

They were – rightfully so – very angry [Tuesday] night. Not disappointed, but angry. That’s a good thing.”

That’s how the Hawks felt last spring, after dropping a triple-overtime opener against St. Louis in the first round. They lost the next game in overtime, too, to fall behind 2-0 in the series. But they reeled off

four wins in a row after that – including two more overtime games – to win the series in six games, the hallmark of a team that never lets the recent past affect the immediate future.

The Ducks need to move past the frustration and disappointment. The Hawks need to move past the excitement and celebration. It’s a best-of-five series now, and both teams appear to be in it for the long haul.

“I guess we’d rather be on the winning side of a game like that than a losing side,” Jonathan Toews said. “It’s mostly how we carry it into [Thursday] night’s game, coming off a win like that. We can imagine it doesn’t feel too good to play almost six periods [and] come up on the losing side.”

Marcus Kruger’s redirect of a Brent Seabrook shot late in the third overtime dramatically changed the complexion of the series. Had the Hawks lost on any of Corey Perry’s golden chances, or Sami Vatanen’s two iron strikes, the reality would have been that Anaheim had merely held serve at home. But the perception would have been greatly different, especially after the Ducks utterly dominated play while erasing an early 2-0 deficit. The

Hawks were on their heels in the game, and in the series. But suddenly, they’re in control.

The difference between a 1-1 series and a 2-0 series was mere inches, but is massive nonetheless.

“It’s a big difference,” Patrick Sharp said. “When you play that long a game, it’s nice to come out on the winning side, as well. It’s going to be that type of series.”

The Ducks are trying to focus on the positive – how their relentless forecheck wreaked havoc on the Hawks’ undermanned defense, how they generated so many great scoring chances, how untested Frederik Andersen went toe-totoe and save-for-save with the Stanley Cup-winning Corey Crawford. It’s all they can do after a game like that.

“We could have won,” defenseman Francois Beauchemin said. “We were right there. It’s not hard to move on, because we had our chances.”

Added captain Ryan Getzlaf: “No matter what the outcome is the one before, it’s about the next one now. You know, never once did we think we were going to sweep the Chicago Blackhawks. We lost one. Now we’ve just got to prepare again.”

Sox third base coach McEwing sees growth in the team

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Joe McEwing played in New York and coaches in Chicago, so he’s no stranger to vocal criticism. And when the White Sox played bad baseball out of the starting gate this year, he understood why.

“It’s the nature of the game,” McEwing said.

To what extent manager Robin Ventura and coaches like McEwing were responsible – general manager Rick Hahn said everyone was accountable – McEwing knows that poor execution, bad decisions and mental errors reflect poorly on them – even if that

wasn’t what was taught during spring training.

“We’re all in this together, all battling, and we all want the right thing – to play the game right and play the game clean,” McEwing said Wednesday. “Every one of us as staff members has busted our butt to put everyone in position to be successful.”

While playing far from perfect baseball even in their streak of six wins in seven games and 10 in the last 14 through Tuesday, the Sox are playing better.

“And we’re putting it together,” McEwing said. “A lot cleaner games, we’re playing better defensively and we’re

getting good pitching and timely hitting. That’s a good chemistry for good baseball, and wins.”

Sox starting pitchers have made six quality starts in their last seven through Tuesday and had a 3.13 ERA over their last 12, and the offense is improving. Mistakes are less glaring, although a misjudged fly ball by Avisail Garcia and a mistimed leap by Alexei Ramirez led to runs in the Indians’ 3-1 victory Monday that stopped a six-game win streak.

So it’s not quite the complete transformation, but the Sox feel better about themselves today than they did two weeks ago.

“There has been a change,” Jose Abreu said through an interpreter. “The change is about the mentality to approach the game. Right now, we feel like we are going to win every night. That’s something we don’t have doubt about. That is key for us right now.”

During the bad times, Abreu was saying the team needed “to come together.” McEwing says in has but it took time because of so many first-year players such as Jeff Samardzija, Carlos Rodon, David Robertson, Zach Duke, Dan Jennings, Adam LaRoche, Melky Cabrera, Geovany Soto and Emilio Bonifacio.

“Over time the chemistry is coming together where guys

are getting used to playing with each other,” McEwing said. “When you turn over a third of your roster it’s going to take time to gel and start playing together.”

McEwing sees 25 players pulling together and having each other’s backs. Nothing makes him happier. Nothing rankles him more, though, than hearing that Ventura’s abilities are questioned.

“It’s totally unfair,” McEwing said. “Robin is a tremendous leader and a winner. The preparation he puts in every day, as much as he cares about winning and every individual in this clubhouse on and off the field, it’s very unfair.”

Hesiod, an ancient Greek poet, said, “Observe due measure, for right timing is in all things the most important factor.”

Right on! Many things in life require good timing: Meeting a potential spouse, a golf swing, music, and making or breaking a bridge contract.

In bridge, the order in which the cards are played often makes the difference between success and failure -- as in today’s deal. How should South time four spades after West leads the heart king?

In the auction, North wasn’t thrilled to bid two spades, but he did have seven points and three-card support.

South would have liked a singleton, but he had so many aces and kings that he couldn’t stop short of game.

Declarer begins by counting the losers in his hand. He has four: one spade (assuming trumps are 3-2; if they are 4-1, the contract has no chance), two hearts and one club. It is possible that clubs will be worth three tricks, but that is slightly against the odds. Instead, South should plan to ruff his last heart in the dummy. But it requires careful timing.

Suppose declarer wins the first trick and returns a heart, West can take the trick and lead a third heart.

Here, East overruffs the dummy, leads a club to his partner’s ace, and ruffs another heart, which effects an uppercut. West gets two trump tricks for down two.

Instead, declarer should duck the first trick, win the second with his heart ace, and draw two rounds of trumps before ruffing his last heart in the dummy. Even if East could overruff, it would be with his natural trump trick.

Being a good listener is the best way to be heard Dear Abby: I am responding to “Tired of Talking to Myself” (Feb. 13), whose husband’s ears slam shut when she begins to speak.

This is not a problem that’s exclusive to men. Women do it as well. As a retired PA (physician’s assistant), when talking with patients, I would refer to it as selective hearing loss.

“Tired” needs to look at her own behavior because I have never seen one partner be the only guilty one. My wife can hear the ticking of the turn signal that wasn’t turned off, but she doesn’t always hear my questions or statements.
