The American Legion Post 294 will hold its annual Election of Officers at its regular Post Meeting on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m.

Local districts celebrate EMS Week; many responders follow in family footsteps COAL CITY – Keegan Anderson of Coal City always knew he wanted to be a firefighter and paramedic like his dad, Capt. Shawn Anderson.

Shawn Anderson served on the Coal City Fire Protection District for 25 years.

Keegan already is a firefighter and an EMT, but fulfilling the next step to become a paramedic is something he’s working toward through Morris Hospital and his fire district.

“I started right after graduation in 2011. I want to move up and become a full-time firefighter some day,” he said before his paramedic class at the Coal City Fire Protection District on Tuesday morning.

Anderson said he enjoys getting to interact with people, but understands the nature of the job means one day he may have to respond to a call to his grandmother’s or parent’s house or the home of a lifelong friend. He is ready for the challenge.

For Jeff Sheldon, firefighter, paramedic and son of Fire Chief James Sheldon, the thought never crossed his mind growing up.

After graduating high school early, his dad suggested he take the semester between graduating and starting college in the fall and go to Emergency Medical Services school.

Today he serves as a firefighter and paramedic for the Coal City Fire Protection District.

“After I got involved I realized it was too much fun not to

do,” Sheldon said.

Since 1973, the country, under the direction of Gerald Ford, has celebrated EMS Week to honor those who provide emergency services to their communities.

This year it is celebrated May 17 to 23.

Those who are with a Grundy County fire district can take classes to become EMT certified or get their paramedics license at a training academy

in Minooka, which is run by Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, according to Emergency Management Coordinator Kevin Bernard.

They are taught by licensed staff and when they complete the paramedic course, which is accredited by two governing bodies nationally, they are eligible to take their paramedic exam anywhere in the country and begin their career.

Morris Hospital became a

resource hospital in 2010 and in addition to classroom studies, students can do clinicals within the hospital, working in the cardiac department and in the emergency room.

In addition to class and clinicals, the students ride with preceptors within the fire district to get required hours in an ambulance.

Sheldon is a preceptor with the Coal City fire district and helps paramedic students get the hands-on training needed to work for a fire district in the future.

Bernard said the EMTs and paramedics are like an arm of the hospital: They are trained to help the patient from a scene to the hospital, and having done their clinicals at the hospital provides a continuum of care.

Not all of this year’s students are following in their father’s footsteps, though their parents do have something to do with it.

Alicton Inthakoua of Joliet has spent the last nine months training to be a paramedic and knows what he is learning will help him as his parents age.

“My parents are getting older and I’m the only child,” he said. “I will need to help take

The number of Class E liquor licenses, which permit the sale of beer and wine but no carryout, has increased in Morris from four to five. The City Council approved 7-0 the change Monday, following a recommendation from the Judiciary and License Committee.

Another unanimous vote then allowed Holiday Inn Express and Suites, 222 Gore Road, to sell beer and wine to guests. Representatives from Holiday Inn Express discussed the idea with the committee at a May 4 meeting and received positive feedback before formally ap-

plying.

“I think they’re looking at the hotel under construction in Minooka and hoping to remain competitive,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said Tuesday.

Kopczick said hotels with vacationing clientele sometimes have bars operated by a third party, but being that Holiday Inn Express is more of a one- or two-night stay hotel, a Class E license seems the standard in the industry.

Representatives reiterated to the council Monday they wished to remain competitive with nearby hotels after customers mentioned to management they’d like to purchase beer and wine without leaving the hotel.

“We get a lot of business from Exelon, and they don’t want to chance a trip to a liquor store in their trucks, where there’s nowhere to legally store alcohol.”

Vonderheide said Holiday Inn Express recently allowed North America locations to

begin applying for licenses.

She also referenced Monday the frequency of post-wedding guests from nearby Jennifer’s Garden Banquet and Convention Center. Beverages will be in a locked cooler near the front desk, which is supervised 24 hours a day by employees 21 and older. Everyone is carded prior to purchase, which is limited to prepackaged items.

Holiday Inn Express also uses off-duty Morris police officers for security. The approval comes after an application by a

different business for the city’s fifth Class E liquor license was denied May 4.

During that council meeting, a motion by Alderman Don Hansen, chairman of the Judiciary and License Committee, to grant the license to Lili Mae’s for a videogaming establishment died. Council members expressed concern with increasing the number of videogaming places in town.

Videogaming businesses are required by the state to have a Class E license.

Saratoga board holds off approving parking lot work

Open bids were taken for a new parking lot at the school.

Superintendent Kathy Perry brought two bids to the board with the recommendation to reject both bids. The school board followed her recommendation and voted against the bids.

“Our budget for this parking lot project was $160,000, and the lowest bid we received was $217,000, with the next at $267,000, and we even extended the time in order to have a second bid,” Perry said.

Perry also told the board the tuition-based preschool proposed last month is being postponed for now and will be reevaluated next year.

“If 30 percent of the students will be getting some form of aid with the program, it is going to cost the district more money, so we will postpone for now and then see how we can possibly work it out,” Perry said. “We will have time to check out other schools and see what they are doing.”

In other business, the board approved an extracurricular cooperative with District 54.

Zweeres told the board about an opportunity to pass cross country and wrestling as an extracurricular cooperative. The board approved, allowing a onetime $50 fee per sport, not per child registered, which goes to the Illinois Elementary School Association.

“We can offer these sports to piggyback what we have at Saratoga. We will have sign-ups at the same time as the other sports, as to not conflict with participation here at Saratoga, and I have roughly 12 kids interested in the cross country already,” Zweeres said.

MORRIS – The lights dimmed and the room fell silent Monday as video clips of “Seussical the Musical” played in the multipurpose room at Saratoga School. Sixth-grade student Jennavieve Malaise stood up and told of her experience as a character in the play, saying “my favorite part was the knowledge I gained, and in a fun way.”

Teacher/reading specialist and play producer Rita Gemmer spoke Monday to the Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C Board about the year’s musical.

“We ran the show for three nights and were sold out, with a waiting line all three showings,” Gemmer said.

Gemmer, along with music teacher/choir director Kim Struck and music teacher/band director Shauntia Mettlin, put on this play in April.

“This play took a lot of choreography and coordination.

It’s definitely one of the harder ones we have done,” Gemmer said. “Half of our eighth-graders from the drama and musical group are going to pursue speech and theater when they go to high school, and we even had people from Morris Com-

munity High School at the play to see what the kids can do.”

The board met Monday to discuss details for eighth-grade graduation June 1, and parking lot construction bids, as well as to organize the next school year.

Principal Joe Zweeres said the school is going to try something new with graduation this year.

“We are hiring a photographer to take pictures of the entire ceremony, and the kids, with the option for parents to buy the photos at a reasonable price,” Zweeres said. “The room is so full, and sometimes it’s hard to get a good picture of your child.”

Galloway remodel plans progress

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Plans are progressing for the remodel of N.B. Galloway School, which could go out for bid as soon as this fall, with work beginning after the spring 2016 thaw.

Channahon School District 17 is adapting the building to possibly add more grade levels to the school, in anticipation of consolidating the district’s four schools into three.

The change is prompted by a drop in student enrollment.

The School Board took another look at student enrollment history and projections Monday evening. There were 1,282 students enrolled this school year, according to the district.

Next year, projections show an expected enrollment of 1,209.

The following year, enrollment is expected to decrease again to 1,159, followed by yearly enrollments of 1,113 students, 1,074 and 1,046. Administrators have watched enrollment trends for the past few years. The board has considered several options for the schools, and the one most favored is the eventual shuttering of Pioneer Path School.

To prepare N.B. Galloway School for the addition of more students, more gymnasium time would be needed and a separate lunchroom/multipurpose room added.

She gave the board a brief overview of remodel plans for Galloway and said the plans are coming along fine. Two design options were shown to the board that would enable the school’s current lunchroom/gymnasium to be used exclusively for physical education. A separate space for the new lunchroom/multipurpose room would be constructed. Earlier cost estimates by the architect came in at $1.1 million. The savings of closing down Pioneer Path School, previously estimated by a board member, could be a few hundred thousand dollars a year.

Staff, students recognized

Three retiring teachers and one administrator also were recognized at the meeting for their years of service. The board thanked home economics and physical education teacher Sue Davis; music and language arts teacher Anita Freehauf; math, language arts and social stud-

ies teacher Peggy Lindstrom; and Superintendent Karin Evans, who retires at the end of June. Regional History Bee qualifiers also were recognized at the meeting, presented to the board by sponsor Kim Yonker.

Cameron Lowe, eighth grade, will advance to the national competition in Nashville; and Paul Jones, Ellis Kennedy, Nick Olson and William Maurice also qualified for regional competition.

The board also approved its meeting schedule for the next year. Meetings will be held on the fourth Monday of each month, with the following exceptions: Dec. 14 and March 21, 2016. The board meets at 7 p.m. in the District Office board room at the west end of Pioneer Path School.

The board’s July 27 meeting will be held earlier, at 5 p.m., and will include a work session, also open to the public.

Peter J. “Pete” Trucano died at the Oak Trace Retirement Community in Downers Grove, Illinois on May 10th, a couple weeks short of his 97th birthday.

Born May 26, 1918, in Bevier, Missouri, Pete grew up in Highwood,

Illinois. After caddying at Exmoor Country Club on Chicago’s North Shore, he attended Northwestern University on an Evans Caddie Scholarship. Following a three-year stint in the Navy during World War II where he worked on a program tasked with developing radar for aircraft, he earned a PhD in organic chemistry at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. He moved to Morris in 1947 to establish a quality control lab at the Morris Paper Mill and subsequently worked in sales for the paper mill until the early 1970s. He then became President of a packaging company in Geneva, Illinois, which he ran until his retirement in 1987.

A life-long golfer, Pete was a member of the Morris Country Club for 68 years and was Club Champion 13 times. During his tenure as President of the Club, he designed and oversaw the construction of the Club’s second nine. He remained an active golfer until last year, shooting his age many times over the years.

Pioneer of childbirth method in U.S. dies

By JENNIFER PELTZ The Associated Press NEW YORK – When Elisabeth Bing became interested in childbirth techniques in the 1950s, women were often heavily medicated, dads were generally nowhere near the delivery room and expectant parents had far less information than many do today.

Bing, the Lamaze International co-founder who popularized what was known as natural childbirth and helped change how women and doctors approached the delivery room, died Friday at 100 in her New York apartment, the organization said Saturday.

The cause of her death wasn’t immediately known.

Trained as a physical therapist, Bing taught breathing and relaxation techniques to generations of expectant mothers, wrote several books about birth and pregnancy

and encouraged women – and men – to be more prepared, active and inquisitive participants in the arrival of their babies.

“I was certainly considered a radical,” she wrote in Lamaze’s magazine in 1990.

By then, she noted, childbirth education had become common: “This so-called fad has been proven not to be a fad.”

Born July 8, 1914, in Berlin, Bing fled Nazi Germany with her family for England, where she got her physical therapy training.

Working with new mothers got her thinking about delivery practices, an interest she brought with her to the United States in 1949.

She learned about ideas advanced by some doctors, including French obstetrician Dr. Fernand Lamaze, for using breathing and mental preparation to manage labor pain without medication.

She and the late Marjorie Karmel established what is now Lamaze International in 1960 to spread the strategies.

Bing gave birth herself at 40, going into a fast labor during which she was given spinal anesthesia and nitric oxide.

She told The New York Times in 2004 that she’d gleaned that childbirth training wasn’t about refusing drugs, but rather about teaching a woman “to help herself as far as she can go.”

Lamaze became a household word, woven into pop culture in places from a 1980s Bill Cosby comedy routine to the TV show “Friends” in the 1990s.

Its signature classes involved both women and men, with the idea that fathers could provide emotional and mental support in the delivery room.

during labor fell out of favor with many women, and some couples sought shorter birth preparation classes than Bing’s six-week program.

Still, “I feel we have changed the whole attitude toward obstetrics and pregnant women, not necessarily technical changes, but the psychological and practical approaches to pregnancy,” she told The New York Sun in 2004.

Lamaze International, which has about 2,000 childbirth educators around the world, now more broadly promotes healthy and natural birth practices and preparation.

Bing’s influence lingers there, as in delivery rooms around the country, President Robin Elise Weiss said Saturday.

“Even if people haven’t heard her name,” Weiss said, “she’s impacted how they give birth.”

Brenda Cardenas of Coal City fell into the role after taking a class to fill credit requirements for her college grant.

“I took a class because I needed the credits. I really enjoyed it,” she said.

Today Cardenas is a preceptor for the students, helping them learned the required skills when she isn’t flying around the country as a flight medic.

Held at Dollinger Family Farm in rural Channahon, the Warrior Dash is a running/obstacle course designed to challenge the athletically minded and to raise money for charity.

Last year’s donations went to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

This will be the fifth year the event will be held at Dollinger Family Farm and the sixth year for the dash itself.

Under the agreement, the event’s organizers, Red Frog Events LLC, will pay the village $17,917 and will reimburse Channahon for water supplied to the event at the rate of $7 per 1,000 gallons.

Red Frog also is required to carry liability insurance for the event.

Trustees also accepted $10,000 worth of donations, $5,000 from Thorntons Inc., and $5,000 from the Three Rivers Festival Committee, for the purchase and sponsorship of a Gator all-terrain vehicle.

According to Durkin, the vehicle’s purchase was initially proposed for this year’s budget, but was dropped from the village’s immediate financial plans.

Durkin said he reached out to private businesses and the festival committee to seek alternative funding for the vehicle, which the Public Works Department would use. OPINION Political power plays shown in Springfield SPRINGFIELD – Does the old dog have more bark or bite? It’s something I’ve wondered watching my family’s canines interact – and observing the Illinois Legislature.

My family adopted a dog recently, and that didn’t sit too well with one of the hounds already in residence.

For weeks, we have watched the two walking stiff-legged around each other, hackles up and teeth bared.

They will snarl and snap but have not actually drawn any blood. At issue is who is the top pooch.

In Springfield, a similar dynamic is taking place.

Gov. Bruce Rauner is the new guy at the statehouse, and House Speaker Mike Madigan is the old dog used to having his way. And Madigan is doing his best to prove that he is still the top dog.

To prove who is boss apes pound their chests, cats hiss and dogs growl. Mike Madigan calls bills.

For the past two weeks, Madigan has written, sponsored and called bills for a vote that he doesn’t support.

It makes sense only in a warped Springfield sort of way. Typically, legislative leaders and the governor sit down and talk about legislative priorities. There is usually some give and take and a compromise is reached.

Neither side gets everything it wants, but a final package is eventually hammered out.

And there is usually something for everyone.

But instead of serious negotiations, Illinoisans are being entertained with political theater. Madigan is calling up the governor’s ideas like right-to-work zones and welfare cuts. And he’s having his Democratic majority vote them down – before Rauner

AMENDMENT

VIEWS Scott Reeder and his allies have even introduced the legislation.

The bill and their amendments are drafted by Madigan, not Rauner, and they lack context. For example, it’s kind of hard to decide how much to spend on welfare when it’s unknown how much money will be coming in to the state’s coffers.

Madigan has been talking up raising the income tax; Rauner hasn’t. Considering spending without revenue is like going shopping without knowing how much money you have in your pocket. It’s a pointless exercise.

In fairness, Rauner and his allies are trying to change how the game is played. They are waiting until the final days of the legislative session to introduce bills and seek a grand bargain. This doesn’t sit well with the speaker.

Sometimes it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

But for Madigan this past week hasn’t been about crafting public policy, it’s about teaching obedience.

Some of Madigan’s own lawmakers know when to roll over and play dead. And the Speaker has taught the last five governors to heel. And now he wants Rauner to beg.

Is Madigan barking up the wrong tree? Time will tell.

But time in this legislative session running out.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Lawmakers need to pass the Illinois Law Carbon Portfolio Standard

To the Editor: As mayor of the village of Diamond I am reminded daily of the economic impact of the Exelon Dresden Generation Station. The facility employs 860 workers with an annual payroll of $73 million. Many of these employees live in my community, shop at local businesses, volunteer at local charities and send their kids to local schools. The employees at our local nuclear facility are parents, friends and neighbors. Without them, our community wouldn’t be the same.

Following the November 2013 tornado, the Exelon Braidwood Generation Station dedicated the proceeds from its yearly “Fishing for a Cure” to those impacted by the tornado. They donated $65,000 to help rebuild lives and homes. Exelon Generation Stations and their employees have proven themselves to be wonderful neighbors and valued partners.

Throughout Illinois, nuclear plants employ thousands of workers in high-paying jobs.

These workers contribute to the fabric of their communities, not to mention the local tax base, helping hire teachers, policemen and firemen.

Illinois’ nuclear facilities are reliable, providing nearly half of our state’s electricity. These facilities power our homes and businesses, and anchor the Illinois economy.

Unfortunately some of our state’s nuclear facilities are at risk of closing because of

inconsistent energy policies that artificially pick winners and losers in the marketplace. If the Dresden Generation Station were to close, the consequences for my community would be devastating.

The Dresden plant has an economic impact equal to $1.7 billion. That would be a huge hole to fill for communities throughout Illinois.

It means sacrificing revenue that could have renovated schools, roads, bridges and libraries. It means shuttered local businesses and restaurants. It means hard budget decisions for small-town mayors like me.

That’s why I support the Illinois Law Carbon Portfolio Standard, and I urge our Springfield legislators to pass this bill. The measure values all sources of low-carbon energy equally, including nuclear energy facilities. It will increase renewable energy in our state, while maintaining current sources of low-carbon energy. This bill will create new clean jobs and help preserve the thousands of jobs we currently have. The LCPS is critical for Diamond, and it’s critical for our state’s clean energy future.

Legislators in Springfield face crucial decisions on our state’s fiscal and energy policies, and the LCPS is but one proposal to help address some of these economic and environmental challenges. State lawmakers must pass this bill, and help preserve our state’s nuclear facilities.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Coming down the home stretch of the Southwest Prairie Conference boys volleyball season, Oswego and Minooka are neck and neck for the conference lead.

So, it should come as no surprise that when the two teams hooked up Tuesday that it was a close match.

It couldn’t have been much closer on the Indians’ senior night, as Oswego won the first game 25-22, Minooka rolled to a 25-14 second-game win and Oswego ended up victorious by winning the third game, 2826.

In a match that was back and forth the whole way, it was the little things that made the difference.

“Oswego played a heck of a match,” Minooka coach Janel Grzetich said. “We played pretty well, too, but I thought we could have showed more effort and heart. The Oswego kids, especially in the third game, were diving all over the court, just trying to keep the ball up. We could have showed some of that.”

Minooka (21-12, 11-2) started strong, taking a 7-2 lead in the first game. Oswego countered with a run of its own and tied the game at 10. There were ties at 11, 12 and 13 before Oswego went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 19-14 lead. Minooka rallied, however, and tied it up at 19.

There were also ties at 21 and 22 before Oswego scored the final three points to take the first game.

The Indians again had a strong start in the second game, but this time they kept it going. They led 5-1, 7-2 and 13-4. Oswego played even with the Indians after that, but Minooka’s Alexander Caraynoff ended it with an ace. Caraynoff was one of four seniors being honored during senior night, the other three being Jared Heaser, Aaron Alexander and Jacob Weitting.

Oswego jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third game, but Minooka used two kills each by Danny Beaudin and Brandon Baranski to tie the score at 8.

STAFF REPORTS COAL CITY – A late-inning rally was able to boost the Seneca softball team to a 5-1 Interstate Eight Conference win over league champ Coal City on Monday.

The Irish (23-11, 8-8) plated four runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win. Seneca was led offensively by Michaela Coughlin, who had two doubles and an RBI. Lyda Robinson added two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases.

When a bridge defender is threatening to do something dangerous to your contract, you should try to find a way to defend yourself. In this deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the spade jack. East wins with his ace and returns the spade two. How should declarer continue?

West did not have the greatest one-spade overcall, because his suit was not that robust. But it pays to bid spades. If you find a fit with your partner, the opponents have to go up to the next level to outbid you.

Over two hearts, South might have rebid three no-trump. Then North would have been in a quandary.

With four trumps, it would be normal to choose the major-suit game. But the three low spades suggest notrump because maybe East can get a spade ruff or two. How can three no-trump by South be defeated?

In four hearts, South should realize that East is now out of spades. If East gains a ruff, that and the three missing aces will defeat the contract.

The only way to avoid the spade ruff is for South to take his three club tricks, discarding his last spade on the third. Then he can overruff East.

Against three no-trump, if West leads the spade jack, East must win and shift to a diamond; not easy to find.

Use the bidding to work out the distributions of the opponents’ hands.

Coffee has health benefits but is not without risk Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard that coffee is good for your health • but I’ve also heard that it increases your blood pressure and heart rate. What’s true?

Dear Reader: Right now, the evidence I’m aware of points to health benefits for most people from regularly drinking coffee. I’m talking about straight coffee – minus the cream and sugar.

Straight coffee is a nearly calorie-free beverage brimming with antioxidants.

There’s evidence that drinking coffee might help prevent Type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. And studies show lower rates of gout and liver disease among regular coffee drinkers.

Caffeine, a plant-based substance that stimulates the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff brain and nervous system, is by far the most studied compound in coffee. (It’s what provides your morning jolt.)

But coffee is a complex brew that contains hundreds, if not thousands, of components.

Among these are vitamins, minerals, and potent, plantbased anti-inflammatory compounds known as polyphenols.

Most likely, it’s the combination of these substances, rather than caffeine alone, that account for coffee’s potential health benefits. Why do I say that? For one thing, decaf coffee appears to have

the same ability as regular coffee to reduce blood sugar and decrease insulin resistance. On the flip side, people who get their caffeine from sodas and energy drinks do not see any cardiovascular benefits.

At the same time, you’re right to point out that there also are some potential health problems with coffee. In some people, caffeine causes daytime jitters and sleepless nights. And caffeine does trigger a short-term rise in blood pressure and heart rate.

But a moderate amount of caffeine is still OK for most people with heart disease. The exception is people with heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias).

In order to reap the potential cardiovascular benefits

from coffee, you need to drink at least three 8-ounce cups of regular brewed coffee daily.

Decaf is a good alternative for anyone who needs to steer clear of caffeine.

These include pregnant women and anyone with an arrhythmia.

Just avoid the fancy, super-sweet coffee shop confections that more closely resemble dessert than coffee.

These coffee drinks contain a lot of added sugar and too many calories. (On my website, askdoctork.com, I’ve put a graphic showing the amount of calories, fat and sugar in an average coffee drink from a popular coffee chain.)

The best health option is to prepare your own coffee. Use a brew or drip method and a

paper filter. Adding a small amount of sweetener and some low-fat milk is fine if you need to take a bite out of the bitterness.

I’ve given this assessment of coffee to enough of my patients that I know the statement can be misunderstood.

So: • Drinking coffee regularly is not so powerful that it will protect you from unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

• You don’t need to drink coffee to remain healthy. As we often talk about in this column, there are plenty of other ways to protect your health than a regular cup of java.
