MORRIS – After a first and second motion to approve the consent agenda at the Morris Elementary School District 54, board Vice President Bonnie Cap – who was sitting in for Board President Jerry White during the meeting – raised issues about the bills and prepaid bills payable.

“I have an issue with the bills payable,” Cap said. “I’m not happy with money being spent on credit cards. We are a district on the financial watch list.”

until members could go over each bill on the list, which was several pages long. The total bills up for approval was for $1.06 million, according to board documents. Cap said she particularly wanted to look at the credit card bills, which for the month amounted to more than $14,000.

“I would like to table payables so we can go through them line by line. I think we need to take a look,” Cap said.

Board member Patrick Stevens suggested not tabling the bills payable.

“I suggest not tabling them.

It will create more problems than it solves,” he said. “I’m not sure what that does for getting our bills paid.”

Stevens said he thinks the payables should be addressed at the Committee of the Whole meeting, not during the regular board meeting.

“It needs to be discussed and it needs to be addressed,” Cap said.

Board member Joannie Johnston agreed with Cap. She said there seems to be a lot of overspending and she would like to know where the OK is coming from for the spending.

Stevens said he had an idea of what she was talking about but he wasn’t sure everyone did.

Cap said all the board members knew of her concerns because she contacted them.

“I think everyone knows

what it’s about,” Cap said.

“The problem arose when I saw the receipts for purchase.”

Board members did not specify which bills or receipts were in question in the meeting. A copy of a Bank of America credit card shows $66, and a bill for American Express Corporate Purchasing Card showed bills totaling $14,423.39, according to board documents.

As the board was going into executive session, Cap said her concern was based on past bills, not necessarily the bills she asked to have tabled.

The board ended up voting 6-0, with White absent, to pass the consent agenda with the bills payable included.

Bicyclists stop in Morris on way to Springfield Youths lobbying to keep funding for bike program

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Eleven bicycle riders, as young as 17, from Chicago hope to show their determination to be heard in Springfield by riding their bicycles 210 miles across highways, dirt trails and steep hills. Bikes N’ Roses is a youth-centered outreach program created by Community United in Chicago.

The program teaches kids the mechanics of bicycles, plans rides and creates a family-like atmosphere for kids living in areas of gangs, drugs and violence and gives youth employment opportunities.

This group is funded by grants from the state, but the Bikes N’ Roses grant is among many on the chopping block as Springfield wrestles with getting state finances under control.

“After Gov. [Bruce] Rauner revoked a $276,000 grant to Bikes N’ Roses, city youth are biking for three days to Springfield to elevate youth voice and fight against an austerity plan that targets communities of color,” event coordinator An-

After the first 70 miles of the trip, the group landed Saturday evening in Morris.

Through friend Peg Ebert, Morris High School teacher Celia Mistretta connected with Bikes N’ Roses and opened her home to the 11 riders and three support staff.

Mistretta was approved by Communities United to host the group, as she is a teacher and foreign exchange student

host, and she passed the proper background checks.

“I’m looking forward to conversation with the kids. I wish they could stay longer and swim, and be outdoors since they are city kids,” Mistretta said.

The group was scheduled to arrive at 5 p.m., but with road obstacles – which included washed out bridges, gravel and muddy trails – the crew peddled in after 8 p.m. Although

weary and tired, they all had smiles, and were ready for a hot shower and a warm meal.

“I’m an Italian mama, so I made the kids baked ziti and lots of bread. They have ridden all day, I am sure they will eat anything,” Mistretta said.

The group gathered around the dinning room, along with Mistretta and friends, as if they knew each other for years. Everyone ate, shared life experiences, goals, and

what the trip meant to them.

Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center senior Jassmyn Venegas said she was devastated when she heard the news of the funding cut. She has been working with Bikes N’ Roses for four years and is one of the only girls in the program.

“We received an email telling us that our funding was cut and the employees would no longer have jobs. This was my summer job to save money for college. I want to go to Northeastern Illinois University and study psychology,” Venegas said. “Now I have to find a new job, but I will still volunteer at Bikes N’ Roses.”

The group’s planned stop for Sunday was in Normal, and then ride to Springfield on Monday, where they were set to have dinner at a local church and prepare for Tuesday – they day the cyclists plan to lap the governor’s mansion and capitol building, as well as meet with others from Bikes N’ Roses who drove, on the rotunda for a news conference and lobby day.

“I want to see Rauner outside face to face. I want to have a conversation with him about cutting programs, and what it does to youth growing up in a negative environment like I did,” said Jose Briceno, assistant manager at Communities United and Bikes N’ Roses volunteer.

Valdivia aims for Morris 2nd Ward Alderman

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Central Committee on Monday submitted David Valdivia as the Republican Party’s nomination to fill the remaining term of former Republican Alderman Kenneth Sereno, who resigned May 4.

The nomination to fill the Second Ward seat was submitted to Mayor Richard Kopczick, according to a news release from the party.

“I just feel this is a moment that’s meant to be,” Valdivia said Monday afternoon. “It’s a new leadership opportunity and David I know I can do Valdivia it.”

According to the news release, Valdivia has resided in Morris most of his life, is a graduate of Joliet Junior College and Morris Community High School, and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree

from Northern Illinois University.

Valdivia said he spoke to Kopczick last week and planned to meet other City Council members Monday night, as well as take in the meeting by listening and taking notes.

Valdivia has several commitments, including a job at Costco’s Morris facility and as a manager Toby’s Mexi-Mart in downtown Morris.

The restaurant is owned by his family. He’s also the head boys varsity soccer coach

at Morris Community High School and is on the board of directors of the Morris Soccer Association.

He and his wife have two kids.

He said although he has many commitments, City Council will be a priority.

“My soccer staff knows the direction I hope to go in,” Valdivia said. “I believe things like this are an open door from God.” As for his views on the Second Ward, Valdivia hopes to bring more of a family feel.

“I want to bring the community together, not just in the Second Ward but all wards,” he said. “I want us to look at neighbors as family, and open doors for networking.”

Under state law, Kopczick and city council have 60 days from May 4 to appoint Sereno’s replacement, and are not required to select the Grundy County Republican Central Committee’s nomination of Valdivia.

The new alderman is appointed by the mayor with advice of council members.

Morris Council approves automobile replacements

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The City of Morris soon will put to use three new vehicles and a new piece of machinery.

Morris City Council approved 7-0 Monday night the purchase of two new vehicles for the Morris Police Department, and voted 7-0 to purchase a one-ton dump truck and 7-0 to buy a brush chipper for Public Works. Each item being replaced is more than 10 years old.

The Judiciary and License Committee recommended the purchase of the police cars – from Greenway Auto Group – and will serve as detective cars, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said.

“The cars being replaced are a 2002 and 2004 model, with deteriorating mechanical and body,” Dite said. “We went with Ford Edges because Explorers are a bit pricier. Detectives test drove the Edge and loved them.”

The city budgeted for four new cars for the department in fiscal year 2015-16, and the purchases are part of the city’s cycle of replacing a couple vehicles at a time, Alderman Don Hansen said.

The Street and Alley Committee recommended purchases for Public Works, which totaled almost $100,000.

The dump truck is a 2015 Ford F350 V8 4x4 with a V-plow, trailer hitch and 11foot dump body at a cost of $43,947.32, as quoted by Greenway Auto Group, including a $7,900 discount. It replaces a 15-year-old truck, Alderman Randy Larson said.

The 2015 Vermeer BC1500 Brush Chipper with a turbocharged diesel engine comes in at $54,325, quoted by Vermeer Sales and Service of Central Illinois, Inc. The current

woodchipper also is 15 years old.

“It’ll be far more efficient than the old one,” Larson said.

Larson requested Public Works find out if it’d be possible to get employees some training on the new machine after Alderman Don Matteson referenced a recently-filed woodchipper related lawsuit in Coal City.

Last month, the city budgeted for the purchases in the 2015-16 fiscal budget.

The Street and Alley Committee also made a recommendation to city council, which was approved 7-0, to amend an ordinance adding that westbound and eastbound traffic on Route 6 between the west fork of the Nettle Creek Bridge and Route 47 will be a no excessive engine-braking zone.

She said she has been working with Ted Lemmy from Unified Concepts, the district’s tech consultants, to get the live streaming running smoothly, and hardware has been or-

dered to improve the quality of the audio. But the equipment will not be available for the first meeting online.

The district was planning to run a test stream of the Monday night meeting.

The seniors began writing the script in January and it had to be completed by spring break, March 30, so performers could turn their attention to “Grease,” the school’s spring musical.

After the plot was decided, the writers thought of major developments and wrote the dialogue around those events.

Gaska said she learned a lot because it was her first time as a scriptwriter, whereas Allbert wants to be a scriptwriter and director, Gustafson said.

The deadline allowed Gustafson to edit the script, and the Monday after “Grease” performances, April 20, the cast started rehearsing “Redskins R15ing.”

“The toughest part is having such busy schedules as seniors,” Gaska said. “Getting different types of kids from different clubs who haven’t acted together was our goal. If someone couldn’t make rehearsals, they let the cast know and

The cast found comfort in acting as themselves and showing their strong suits as relationships develop throughout the play.

“Knowing each other well as a senior class has helped us,” Enervold said. “We also get to perform with different people.”

The cast used rehearsals as a way to escape the stresses of senior year, such as prom

planning, finding a job, tests, graduation and heading to college.

It’s the last time audiences can see the cast at Morris Community High School this year, and there are some awesome twists and surprises, Gaska said. The writers of the play wanted to get non-drama students to meld with the drama students.

“I try to be hands-off with the senior play,” Gustafson said. “I’ve taught them the last three and a half years, now I get to watch them take on the responsibilities of running the show.”

Eight years ago, the drama club came to Gustafson and said they wanted to keep performing after the spring musical, so the idea of a senior play was born.

The only stipulation from Gustafson was a group had to create the script and direct it.

After a couple years, students who hadn’t been involved in theater wanted to be. That’s when they began to include anyone in the senior class.

“Every year I have at least one student that wishes they did drama earlier,” Gustafson said. “I tell them, at the very least, let this be something that makes you support the-

“We want to provide open, honest, effective communication with our stakeholders,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said.

The Morris Community High School Drama Club held its 10th annual end of the year banquet and International Thespian Society Induction ceremony May 6. Members of Drama Club applied to gain entrance into the Society, which is an honor society for students of theater arts. Born May 5, 1935, in Union Hill, IL to the late Omar Paul and Marian Frances (nee Boyer) Wepprecht. John attended Union Hill Grade School and graduated from Reddick High School in 1953. He was a standout athlete, participating in basketball, football, and baseball. He excelled in basketball, receiving a scholarship to the Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. He soon married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Delores “Dee” (nee Persak), on September 13, 1954.

He then went to work for Herscher Natural Gas and Storage Company for thirteen years. In 1966, he worked for Peabody Coal Company, until it closed in 1975. He continued to work there for one more year to help in the reclamation of the company. He also worked from 1976-1984 as a supervisor at A.O. Smith. Lastly, in 1984, he worked for Commonwealth Edison in the mechanical maintenance department, and retired from Exelon in 2002. In his youth, he was an avid baseball player, playing for the Essex VFW and Acre Inn fast pitch softball as a catcher and “clean-up hitter.” He shared his knowledge of baseball by coaching Little League and Senior League for sixteen years.

He attended the St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church in Essex and the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington, IL. He was vice president of the Essex Historical Society. He served on the Essex town board, was a charter member of the Essex Lions Club, and President on the Reddick High School Board of Education. He also was a charter member of the Ponderosa Sportsmen Club and head of the waterfowl hunting program.

His greatest joy in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren, teaching them everything about anything he knew!

He took great pride in gardening and working in his yard and had a

love for all Chicago sports teams.

Surviving are his wife of sixty years, Delores “Dee” Wepprecht, of Essex; three children, John Bradford (Daphne) Wepprecht of Reddick, IL, Jeff (Katy) Wepprecht of South Wilmington, IL, and Michelle (Larry) Dumke of Grand Ridge, IL; seven grandchildren, Braden (Colleen) Wepprecht, Jared (Elizabeth) Wepprecht, Caleb Wepprecht, Shane Wepprecht, Matthew Wepprecht, Kyle Dumke, and Blair Dumke; five great-grandchildren, Claire Wepprecht, Amelia Wepprecht, Courtney Wosik, Katie Wosik, and Connor Wosik; three siblings, Ronald (Elaine) Wepprecht of Mackinaw, IL, Joyce Raab of Bradley, IL, and Sandra (Dan) Ryan of Union Hill, IL; numerous nieces and nephews; and his favorite physician, Dr. Jayesh Mehta, M.D., Professor of Medicine Director at Northwestern University.

President of Red Sox minor league affiliate PawSox dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Pawtucket Red Sox President James Skeffington, a lawyer who became the minor league affiliate’s public face and lead cheerleader for a plan to move the team to downtown Provi-

dence, has died.

He was 73.

Skeffington died Sunday night while jogging in Barrington, where he lived, team spokeswoman Patti Doyle said Monday.

His brother, Jack Skeffington, said the cause was a heart

attack.

Boston Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino said that Skeffington “was passionately devoted to his home state” and that he may have been the most generous person he had ever known.

“He loved virtually every

sport he encountered, especially baseball, and he seemed to attend every sporting event he could. He was deeply committed to the PawSox and to ensuring a bright future for the franchise in Rhode Island,” Lucchino said in a statement.

Skeffington bought the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in February with a group that includes Lucchino.

They bought it from Madeleine Mondor, the widow of Ben Mondor, who owned the team from 1977 until his death in 2010.

Science and Exploration camp opens this summer

MORRIS – Youth Science and Exploration Camp is coming to Morris June 22-25. The science camp, sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension, is for

youth ages 8-14 interested in science and technology.

The camp will be held at the Extension office north of Morris.

Cost per youth will be $10.

Registration is requested by June 17. Sign-up is first come, first serve for the first 30 youth who register. Last time a similar camp was held, it filled up quickly.

Foundation, Seneca High team up for grants

By DEVAN GAGLIARDO Program director, Community Foundation of Grundy County SENECA – So often the “younger generation” gets a bad reputation. If I had a dollar for every time I heard “kids these days don’t know how to communicate; are always on their phones; have no regard for others; act entitled; are lazy,” well I’d have lots of dollars.

Although this may be true for some youth (and adults), I want to be very clear…not all of today’s youth hide behind iPhones; not all of today’s youth bully their peers; not all of today’s youth are self-centered and inconsiderate.

During the last 5 months, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with a bright and talented group of students from Seneca High School. This group of the “younger generation” are far busier than I care to be.

They are involved in sports, school clubs, and community organizations in addition to taking care of their younger siblings or working, all while maintaining excellent grades.

And yet, all 13 volunteered to meet with me once a month to learn about local nonprofits and philanthropy. Keep in mind these students get nothing for their attendance, except lunch. These students are thoughtful, engaged, and eager to learn.

The very first meeting, students were asked to identify their top areas of interest; they collectively came up with animals, feeding the hungry, children, job opportunities, and education. Based on their choices, local nonprofits serving those populations were asked to come talk about their services.

The organizations who agreed were: Pet Project Inc., JJC/Grundy Workforce Services, Seneca Community Food Pantry, University of Illinois Extension, Youth Service Bureau of Illinois Valley, Seneca High School, and We Care of Grundy County.

Students were able to learn the basic concept of a community foundation and the grantmaking process. But more importantly, they were exposed to seven organizations who serve the communities the students live in. In some instances, the students did not even know an organization existed.

During the April Youth Philanthropy meeting, the students had the daunting task of deciding how to divide the $5,000 designated. I can honestly say, they did not take this job lightly. As a group they discussed the presentations and the information they had been given.

The group also discussed if giving smaller amounts to more organizations would be better or larger amounts to fewer organizations. In the end they choose to provide grants to four organizations: $700 to Pet Project, Inc., $700 to Seneca Community Food Pantry, $1,800 to We Care of Grundy County, and $1,800

to Youth Service Bureau of Illinois Valley. On May 13, the students presented checks to the above organizations.

“We Care was honored to be chosen as one of the recipient charities from this group of young people who took such great care to become educated about each of the organizations and carefully deliberated their final choices. They were a very impressive group that asked good questions and showed great compassion for their community as a whole,” Executive Director Denise Gaska said.

Seneca High School students involved are Sean Baker, Gabe Burla, Eva Bruno, Crystal Carlos, Ashley Hatz, Mackenzie Maierhofer, Emily Misener, Mason Mitchell, Lysett Mora, Mariah Solis, Heather Vroman, Cole Westmoreland and Emily Woods.

After reading this you may have several questions like why youth? Many community foundations across the country are starting to see

how motivated youth are to be involved.

By engaging individuals while they are young, we begin to instill the importance of philanthropy consequently we grow future philanthropists.

Why Seneca? Last fall, I reached out to the five high schools Grundy County students attend and promoted this new group in the newspaper and on the radio. To be

frank, it was this group who showed interest.

Where did the $5,000 come from? The Community Foundation of Grundy County designated $5,000 in the yearly budget for this purpose.

The Foundation’s board and staff want to follow in the footsteps of our foundation peers who have started to grow a philanthropic community one youth at a time.

My hope for the 2015-2016 group is that it will be made up of students from each of the five high schools.

Unlike this year, we will meet beginning in late September and present grants again in May. Meeting for a longer period will allow us to dive into philanthropy more, perform site visits to nonprofits, and accept and review actual grant requests.

The group will meet monthly, in the evening most likely on a Sunday, and likely at the Community Foundation office in Morris.

I could not have asked for a better group of students for the pilot year. I look forward to the group expanding next year and can’t wait to see how many lives are touched because of the “younger generation” of philanthropists.

Shell’s permit for drilling is risky Environmentalists are reeling from the Obama administration’s decision to give conditional approval for Shell Gulf of Mexico Inc. to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean.

With memories of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf still fresh, it’s hard to see why a green light was given to Shell in the Chukchi Sea. Since it initially was granted permission to operate in the Arctic in 2012, Shell has had drilling setbacks in one of the world’s most environmentally fragile regions.

After two of its oil rigs ran aground and had to be towed, the Interior Department rescinded Shell’s drilling permit. The agency criticized the company’s failure to adequately supervise contrac-

tors, and Shell was forced to acknowledge that it initially was unprepared to deal with an environment defined by extreme weather and remoteness.

That should have disqualified Shell from future Arctic drilling, but Obama is giving it another chance, provided it passes a final set of permit reviews.

Environmentalists don’t share the administration’s optimism, and many fear another mishap. It’s not as if, in 2015, the United States is starved for oil.

This president has had a strong environmental record, but if a drilling disaster occurs in the Arctic, it will be known as Obama’s folly – and deservedly so.

‘Right to work’ vote puts some Republicans in a bind with unions Gov. Bruce Rauner had several House Republicans over to the Executive Mansion last week to ask them to vote “Present” when the House Democrats’ called their “right to work” bill the following day. Right to work laws allow union members to not pay for any of their union’s services, even though unions are required by federal law to service all their members.

The laws can cripple unions, which may help businesses, but it tends to drive down wages for working folks.

Why would the Democrats bring an anti-union bill to the House floor? Various reasons, one of them being that they are so opposed to the idea and the governor has pushed it so

forcefully that they wanted to finally get the issue off the table by killing it dead.

Anyway, the governor’s push last week was resisted by a handful of Republicans, even after House GOP Leader Jim Durkin demanded that they stick with the governor and vote “Present.”

Several eventually relented and the governor reportedly said they would be free to vote “No” when a “real” bill is presented, but that they all needed to stick together and hit their yellow buttons to protest House Speaker Michael Madigan’s ploy to put them all on the hot seat. Believe it or not, quite a few unions in this state have spent years wooing Republican legislators. The

VIEWS Rich Miller Illinois Education Association has a strong presence in suburbia and Downstate and the union has long endorsed a significant number of GOP candidates – including in Tier One races against Democrats.

The IEA sent House Republicans a “simple” message last week: “We expect a ‘No’ vote,” said one IEA lobbyist. “Show that you are supportive of the middle class. A vote to the contrary and they will have to explain themselves to our members.”

Mike Carrigan also specifically said that “Present” votes weren’t acceptable. Skipping the vote altogether wouldn’t be a good idea, either, Carrigan warned. “House member absences will be reviewed with suspicious eyes.”

In the end, only one Republican sided openly with the unions and Democrats by voting “No” on the bill, Rep. Raymond Poe of Springfield.

Four union-friendly Republicans didn’t vote at all (Reps.

John Anthony, Bill Mitchell, Michael McAuliffe and John Cabello). A few others didn’t vote, either, but that likely had more to do with the process and/or their relationships with their party leaders than anything else.

Rauner has attempted to peel off black and Latino legislators from labor by playing up the historic “whiteness” of the trade unions and promising affirmative action-style reforms. In remarks planned in advance with other Black Caucus members, Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago, said during debate that the problem needed to be addressed soon or trouble could arise.

Almost all minority legislators stood during his speech and stared at the gallery where labor leaders were seated.

Just ask the Seneca baseball team after the Irish rallied from an early 8-3 deficit Monday to defeat Wilmington, 1412, in a Class 2A Ottawa Marquette Regional quarterfinal.

“The main thing right now is that we move on,” said Seneca’s Hunter Simon, who was the winning pitcher and also drove home the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. “We were just thinking about today’s game. Now, we can think about Wednesday’s game.”

The Fighting Irish (15-191) struck early with a pair of runs in the top of the first as Simon (3 for 4, 3 RBIs, 4 runs) hit an RBI triple, scoring C.J. Pasdertz, who had walked, before coming home on an RBI double by Lars Pihl (2 for 2, 2 RBIs).

Wilmington, however, had its hitting shoes on as well.

Alex Zlomie hit Seneca starter Brandon Viken’s first pitch for a home run to center.

After a fly out to left, R.J. Van Duyne and Steve Smock took the same path as Zlomie and hit back-to-back homers to center for a 3-2 Wilmington lead after one.

Seneca tied it in the top of the second as Matt Houchin led off with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Michael Rhodes.

Wilmington kept on hitting in the second, as Brett McWilliams led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Luke Mann then doubled down the right-field line to score McWilliams.

Mason Southall walked and Zlomie doubled off the fence in left-center to score Mann.

After Wilmington failed to score in the third, Seneca erupted in the fourth. Rhodes led off with a walk and Pas-

dertz reached on an error.

Simon singled in Rhodes and Pihl followed with a single to score Pasdertz. After a walk

by Arik Applebee, Viken hit into a fielder’s choice to score Simon. A wild pitch sent runners to second and third before

Houchin singled up the middle to score both Pihl and Viken for a 10-8 Seneca lead.

Wilmington countered with three in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-10 lead and added another in the fifth to go ahead ,12-10.

Seneca, which plays top-seeded Ottawa Marquette on Wednesday, got things going again in the sixth, when Harty doubled to right to score both Applebee, who had walked, and Viken, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, to tie it at 12. Simon then retired Wilmington in order in the bottom of the sixth.

Rhodes led off the top of the seventh by reaching on an error and was bunted to second

by Pasdertz. Simon then singled to right to score Pasdertz,

and when the ball got past the Wilmington right fielder, went all the way to third. Brant Baudino, who entered the game when Pihl was lifted for a pinch-runner, then singled to right to score Simon and make it 14-12.

“I was just trying to move the runner up,” Simon said about his winning hit. “I was trying to stay calm and do my job.”

His job wasn’t over yet, as he had to retire Wilmington in the bottom of the seventh.

He got the first two batters out before Mann walked and Southall singled, bringing up Zlomie as the winning run.

Zlomie caught hold of a Simon offering and sent it deep to right-center, but Rhodes corralled it near the fence to end the game.

“I was pretty nervous there,” Simon said. “It’s a good thing that was hit to the deepest part of the park. I think I held my breath for about 10 minutes after that.”

“Michael Rhodes is probably our best pure hitter, but he needs work in the outfield,” Seneca coach Kirk Houchin said. “He would be the first one to tell you that. We have been working with him on going back on the ball, and he made the play when he needed to.

“We scored in six of our seven at-bats. We have been known to score a lot early and then just sit back and relax.

We didn’t do that today. We came back two or three times.

We got some big hits from a lot of people. Brody Harty had a big hit, Matt Houchin had a big hit, Brant Baudino had a big hit coming in off the bench.

Any win at this time of the year is a pretty one.”

SOFTBALL: MORRIS 8, JOLIET CENTRAL 0

Burns hurled everything in her vast repertoire at the Joliet Central hitters on Monday afternoon, pitching the Redskins to an 8-0 nonconference victory.

“This was one of my better games,” said Burns, who threw all of her five pitches – fastball, change, drop, screwball and riseball – liberally in baffling the Steelmen.

So good was the righthander that she struck out the first eight batters, 11 through four innings, 13 through five and 15 in all as Morris (22-8) won for the 11th time in its last 14 games.

Central (8-23) did not have a baserunner until Ashley Hare’s bunt single with one out in the fourth inning. Burns walked one batter in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Then in the seventh, thanks to a game-ending double play, she escaped her only jam to preserve the shutout.

“The wind was good for me today,” Burns said. “It was working in my favor.”

Burns had a game earlier this season where she struck out all but one out through five innings. “But I don’t usually strike out this many,” she said. “They started to get used to me toward the end.”

“We’ve seen pitchers who move the ball around, use different pitches and throw strikes like she does,” Steelmen coach Erin Douglas said.

“We’ve usually hit them OK. I’m not sure why we struggled so much today.”

Hare’s bunt single was the only Central hit through six innings. Christina Valentino, who played a strong defensive game at third base, singled and Shelby Fischer followed with a single to open the bottom of the seventh. A one-out walk loaded the bases, but Morris third baseman Ryan Friend fielded a ground ball, threw to catcher Emily Moore for a force out and her relay to first

“Abby really took control,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said of Burns. “She is not overpowering, but her ball moves.

It’s hard to hit a pitcher who moves it up and down, in and out, and has good off speed pitches.

“She has been throwing well the last few weeks, incorporating all her pitches. She has better stamina now, which is good heading toward the postseason.”

Burns worked from an early comfort level as Morris scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second off right-hander Hanna Gawenda, who blanked the Redskins in the third through sixth innings. Jasmine Cook singled in the first inning and with two outs, Ashley Phelps ripped the first of her three hits. A two-base error in the outfield allowed the two runs to score.

Taya Torkelson opened the second inning with a single, Gigi Cochran singled and

Torkelson scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0. Janelle Brehm and Moore singled home runs and Phelps knocked in another with a double.

The Morris bats then went silent until the seventh when Moore singled, Phelps doubled her home and Phelps eventually scored on a passed ball.

Phelps had three of Morris’ 12 hits and Brehm, Moore and Tokelson added two each.

“We have a leadoff hitter [Brehm] who does a great job getting on base, and the mid-

dle of our lineup hits the ball hard,” Lowery said. “We hit well the first couple of inning, then fell kind of flat, and we got back at it in the seventh.

That one thing we need in the postseason – we’ve got to be consistent.”

“It seemed like every ball they put in play was hit hard,” Douglas said. “Our third baseman [Valentino] and our outfield stepped up defensively and gave us a chance, where this game otherwise could have ended early.”

Minooka’s success is cause to be optimistic Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic knows a little something about winning baseball.

In an area that boasts numerous quality teams every spring, you always could count on Minooka being among them.

This season is different. Make that, was different. The Indians started 3-10. However, Minooka is 14-3 over its past 17 games for a 17-13 overall mark.

Plainfield North leads the Southwest Prairie Conference race at 14-4, and Minooka is right on its heels at 13-5. Crazy as it once sounded, the Indians have a shot at a conference title. Why the turnaround?

“I really don’t know,” Petrovic said Saturday when his Indians were at Joliet West in a game that was stopped because of wet field conditions after four innings and thus did not count. “I wish I knew what happened. Then I could use it in future years.”

Petrovic said it perhaps is “the combination of a lot of little pieces. The kids’ attitude changed, and maybe our team chemistry got better. Of course, winning takes care of the chemistry a lot. Not only do we have

VIEWS Dick Goss the right people in the right places now, but we’re starting to peak as a team. That all plays into it.”

Senior second baseman Jake Null said the turnaround “probably came from a lot of things. We tried to turn our attitude around first, and I think we did. ... We’re playing with more confidence than we did earlier.”

The Indians did not rip the cover off the ball in the few innings that were played Saturday, but their lineup somehow had a better feel to it than it did earlier in the season. I mentioned that to Petrovic. He said: “You’re right, our lineup is better, and Cristian [Sanchez] is not here. You slide him into the 3-hole and move everyone else down one, and it’s that much better. We’ve made a lot of improvements there.”

Petrovic said he and pitching coach Jim Lamping are sure of right-hander Miguel Ruiz being the Indians’ No. 1 pitcher heading into the postseason. Otherwise, he said, “We have a few decisions to make.

Other than facing Providence twice early on and not getting much support, Miguel has been very good. He clearly is our No. 1 now.”

Aside from the obvious rea-

son of a good local rivalry being renewed, the Minooka at West game was interesting from another standpoint. The two will meet May 28 in the second semifinal of the Class 4A Joliet West Regional. West (16-10) is the No. 2 seed behind Bradley, and Minooka is No. 3. The tournament will open Memorial Day with No. 5 Joliet Central visiting No. 4 Plainfield South.

That winner will face Bradley in the May 27 semifinal.

David Attenborough, an English naturalist and broadcaster, said, “Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?” Also, everyone wishes that they could fly like a bird.

Do you like wild bridge deals, ones with crazy distribution? If today’s deal were played in a duplicate, there would be several different auctions, but the two most likely final contracts would be five spades by South (perhaps after the given auction) and six diamonds doubled by East, who refused to sell out to five spades because of his side’s double fit in the minors.

How should the defense go against each of those contracts?

West used the Unusual No-trump to show at least 5-5 in the minors.

North’s jump to four spades was pre-emptive: long spades, weak hand.

East had an easy five-diamond bid.

But then, when South persisted with five spades, East probably should have gone on to six.

Although it would theoretically have been a phantom sacrifice (both five spades and six diamonds can be defeated), when one has a double fit, it usually pays to declare.

Against five spades, West leads the diamond ace. Since the queen is on the board, East plays the nine, a count card showing an even number. West cashes the diamond king. Now East, with attitude and count known, should send a suit-preference signal by dropping the two to ask for a club shift. Then five spades fails. But if West leads a heart or a third diamond, the contract makes.

To defeat six diamonds, South must cash two heart tricks -- not so hard. ******

Husband’s caring ministry doesn’t extend to his wife Dear Abby: I have been married to the same man for 20 years.

He likes having people around ALL the time, and because he is a minister, we often can’t avoid it. I have tried to accommodate his friends and hangers-on, but lately it’s becoming unbearable.

I have tried over the years to make sense of his attitude toward me (also toward those he’s offered help).
