Man sentenced to 9 years for DUI crash that killed 2 MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – A Shorewood man involved in a crash that killed two last July has been sentenced to nine years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Tristan Durov, 19, of Shorewood, pleaded guilty Wednesday in a Grundy County courtroom to aggravated driving under the influence causing a death and was sentenced to nine years, according to court records on judici.com.

Durov was originally indicted on 23 counts for his involvement in the one-vehicle crash that killed Kendall Forth, 16, of Minooka and James Harris III, 22, of Channahon.

100-year-old area native still golfs locally, shares his secrets to longevity

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There is no secret to living to be 100 years old, according to Don Hall, who turned 100 on Tuesday.

It’s all in the genes and by eating healthy.

“He has a boiled egg, chocolate and nuts every day,” his youngest son Larry Hall said with a smile. “That’s his idea of eating healthy.”

Don, who grew up in Lisbon and has lived in Grundy and LaSalle counties, said it isn’t just the eggs and chocolate.

It’s using only real butter, not margarine, and using it on everything, including his cookies and brownies.

A closer look at his life, though, shows Don also has remained active. At 70, he took up golf, and he pulled his bag and walked the holes of the golf course – until he turned 92 and resorted to using a golf cart.

On Wednesday, the day after his 100th birthday, he hit the links at Nettle Creek Country Club with the Senior Men’s League, which he joined years ago.

“I started when I retired at 70. I wanted to do something to keep busy,” he said. “I know it’s a late age to start.”

He said his best golf game was a long time ago when he shot a 31 in nine holes, but that isn’t his typical game.

At 92 years old he won the Super Senior Championship at Prairie Lake Country Club in Marseilles.

But there is much more to Don than golfing.

He grew up in Lisbon and spent a good part of his life farming. He worked for Central Limestone Company for 45 years, and built his own home in Lisbon in 1950.

“I was raised east of Lisbon on a farm during the Great Depression,” he said. “I was lucky to live on a farm. We had something to eat.”

Committee approves Costco updates sent to council part-time position

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Jason Helland’s office received the Personnel Committee’s support to hire Dan Lombardi for a part-time temporary position within the office.

“Dan has been an intern in our office as an Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 intern.

His license became invalid when he passed the bar,” Helland said Thursday afternoon. “We’d like to keep him in the office working part time until he can find a fulltime position.”

The services authorized by the 711 rule can be carried out with a legal aid bureau, public defender or in a state law office, and allows a Juris Doctorate student in good standing the ability to work under the supervision of another attorney.

Helland said Lombardi is a Morris Community High School graduate and he’d like to see another productive lawyer come out of Morris. Helland said he feels the part-time position will help Lombardi succeed.

As an intern, he was paid $10 an hour for his work within the office, and the

temporary position Helland is seeking would pay $15 an hour with no benefits.

Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman told the committee Lombardi has jumped right in. Lombardi has researched cases for Rudman, which in turn saved the county money because Rudman was involved with other cases and did not have the free time to research.

“The number of assistant state’s attorneys by law has to be set by the county board,” Helland said. “Any conviction could be overturned if they don’t vote to create the position now that he is a lawyer.”

Helland said there would be no additional cost to the county, the position could be paid from funds that are currently in the office budget.

Board member Vicki Geiger voiced her concern that approving the resolution to go to the full board would open the door to fill the position with another attorney once Lombardi finds employment elsewhere.

Rudman said the resolution specifically states Lombardi’s name and could not be used to fill the position

MORRIS – Costco Wholesale is one step closer to adding a meat packing facility in Morris.

The Morris Development Review Committee approved Thursday a revised expansion plan from Costco to build a meat packing facility for hot dogs, meatballs and sausage west of its two current distribution facilities – one of which is dry, the other refrigerated.

The plan is tentatively approved until an intergovernmental annexation agreement is approved between Morris, Grundy County and Costco.

The first plan was approved in April 2014 by the committee but the city found several aspects that need to be addressed, Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said.

“We have to be prepared for future expansion, whether Costco expands more after this, or if they sell additional land,” Cheshareck said. “We don’t want to re-do things afterward. We have to make sure the water and sewer are correct to accommodate this growth and any more future growth.”

The site will use 200,000 gallons of water a day and will need to treat all of it. Oils, fats and grease bring about the

When the project was discussed last year, a few neighbors attended a public hearing with concerns. The city still is negotiating an annexation agreement with the city. need for an on-site treatment facility. Cheshareck said the city was concerned it would clog the treatment facility, so Costco agreed to build its own lift station.

“The sanitation is being taken serious because it is a meat packing plant,” City Attorney Scott Belt said.

The issue of an on-site lift station does not fall under Development Review Committee jurisdiction, Belt said. The lift station will be owned and operated by Costco.

The proposed lift station will be a 50’ x 50’ building. The building would be between the

detention basin and the truck parking area on the west side.

At a public hearing held last year, some neighboring residents expressed concern with being surrounded by industrial developments. No one from the public spoke Thursday to the DRC, and officials said there will be an 80-acre parcel between the building and homeowners.

“There should be no problem there,” Belt said.

The plant’s design has increased since coming before the committee a year ago.

“My greatest accomplishment is my two wonderful sons,” he said.

The love behind that statement was visible in his eyes, as well as the reaction of the

two sons who sat with him.

“He is the greatest man alive,” Gordon said. “You hear people described as a jack of all trades and master of none.

He is a jack of all trades, master of all.”

Larry said he thinks the secret to his dad’s longevity is simple – he is mild-mannered and takes life easy.

“He’s rarely upset and he takes one day at a time,” Larry said.

The three celebrated his birthday Wednesday and took in nine holes before returning to Rockford.

Continued from page 4 The proposed plant would be 362,192 square feet, up from 308,000 square feet. The additional space would be on the east side of the property and closer to the existing plant than in the original plan.

Talks between Morris and Costco explored the possibility of adding right-of-way to Lisbon Road for the entirety of the 140-acre site Costco intends to use, Belt said. The matter has been discussed with Grundy County, and County Engineer Craig Cassem is aware of possible road work that would be paid for by Costco.

“Lisbon Road is and will always be a county road,” Belt said.

Costco also agreed to add

black chain-link fencing, similar to what is along Route 47, to this portion of the property, between the roadway and a 25-foot easement agreed upon for utilities. Cheshareck said there will be about 125 feet of green area between the road and fence. A bike path along the ComEd power grid that runs through the property was discussed last year, but it was agreed that an 8-foot wide asphalt bike path would be installed by the developer along Lisbon Road instead, which borders the property to the west. Hotline initially targeted calls from church priests, brothers

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Upper Room Crisis Hotline will now answer calls about religion from people outside Catholic churches.

Members of the nonprofit organization decided at their April board meeting to open the hotline service to everyone. In the past, the hotline was for answering questions and concerns from priests, deacons and others who work for churches.

Last year, The Upper Room saw an increased number of calls from throughout the world because of people find-

ing the hotline number on the Internet, said Sister Mary Frances Seeley, Upper Room director. Between 2008 and 2012, the number of calls grew from 485 to 3,083 annually, according to the organization’s annual report.

The hotline is a national program offering answers to religious questions from anyone, regardless of their faith.

“We had Muslims, we had Jews, we had Protestants of various denominations,” Seeley said. “Even though we’re a Catholic hotline, we do get calls from others of different denominations.”

BRIEF BAIID bill OK’d by State Senate goes to governor

Legislation proposed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White requiring Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices to be installed on all vehicles used by DUI offenders was approved Thursday by the State Senate.

House Bill 1377 seeks to ensure BAIIDs are installed on all cars driven by driving under the influence offenders – including rental cars – as opposed to only the vehicles they own, according to a news release from White’s

office.

White’s legislation also calls for a BAIID indicator to be marked on the back of a driver’s license of those required to drive with a BAIID. Entities that rent or otherwise provide vehicles for transportation to the public are encouraged to check the backs of driver’s licenses before completing a transaction.

If the BAIID indicator is present on the license, a BAIID must be installed before the user may gain access to the vehicle.

Many of the calls deal with people who have not been to the church for years, if not decades, Seeley said. Others cover moral stances of the Catholic Church and the Ten Commandments.

“Sometimes they don’t remember how to go to confession. Sometimes they want to know the differences in the Bible and what’s the best version and why we have so many different Bibles,” she said.

Seeley was asked to run the program by religious leaders when the Catholic Church was bedeviled by sex abuse scandals in the early 2000s. The program began seven years ago with the intention of being a faith-based hotline for Catho-

lic priests and brothers.

The program works with trained volunteers, who take an eight-week course to learn how to do the job. Seeley said about 20 more volunteers are needed and a training session will start May 26.

She said those interested in being a volunteer should call 815-341-9124.

Senate approves bill to honor late firefighter

COAL CITY – The Grundy County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the driver of a vehicle that was found Wednesday night submerged in a lake at the Coal City Area Club.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan said deputies were dispatched to the Coal City Area Club at 10:57 p.m. for a report of a vehicle in the water.

“Upon searching the scene, deputies ran into four females walking along Coal City Road who stated they were in the truck when it went into the water. They reported the driver helped everyone out of the vehicle,” Callahan said.

The driver had left the scene and as of Thursday afternoon had not been located.

Deputies called the Coal City Fire Protection District to the scene when they were unable to locate the vehicle.

Callahan said the truck was found in the water about 20 feet deep. The scene was marked and a tow truck responded Thursday morning to retrieve the vehicle.

Callahan said the matter is under investigation.

MORRIS – A portion of Route 47 is officially being designated for the late Morris firefighter James Allen. The house bill was passed by the Senate on Thursday.

Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, sponsored the bill in the Senate.

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, brought the bill, HJR 6, to the House and it was adopted in March. A portion of Route 47 over the CSX Railway in Morris between High Street and Benton Street will be named in memory of Allen, a firefighter killed in the line of duty in 1985.

At only 24, Allen, a volunteer fireman, lost his life in a residential fire because of a backdraft.

Allen is the son of Ken Allen of Coal City and Judy Steffes of Sheldon. He was married to his wife Donna and had a son, Kenneth James Allen, at the time of the fire.

He loved the outdoors and taking the children on camping trips and rafting trips in the west.

He enjoyed getting together with friends and target shooting muzzle loading rifles.

William Zinsser, author, dies at 92

By HILLEL ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – William Zinsser, the much-consulted teacher, author, journalist and essayist whose million-selling book “On Writing Well” championed the craft of nonfiction and inspired professionals and amateurs to express themselves more concisely and vividly, died Tuesday at age 92.

Zinsser died at his Manhattan home after a brief illness, said his wife, Caroline Fraser Zinsser.

A newspaper and magazine reporter into his 40s, Zinsser became a mentor for countless authors, journalists and would-be writers.

“On Writing Well,” published in 1976 and praised by The New York Times as worthy of “The Elements of Style,” caught on first among college students and professors, then with the general public, selling more than 1 million copies.

At Yale University, where Zinsser taught creative nonfiction in the 1970s, his students included such future stars as Christopher Buckley, Jane Mayer and Mark Singer.

But Zinsser also valued the business executive trying to compose more understandable memos, the lawyer with a life story to share, the church volunteer eager to document her good work.

He loved teaching those without special talent, he once explained, and helping them

“solve their problems.”

Working on an old typewriter, Zinsser wrote more than a dozen other books, including “Writing to Learn,” “Writing With a Word Processor” and the memoir “Writing Places.”

He also advised government agencies and corporations, played jazz piano, wrote songs and served as executive editor of the Book-of-the-Month Club.

In recent years, he wrote an online column for The American Scholar and taught at Columbia University and The New School for Social Research.

After his eyesight failed, he invited students to his apartment and listened to them read from their work.

In firm but friendly style, he bore down upon cliches, pomposities and euphemisms.

Politicians, ever at war against plain speech, were easy culprits.

He cited Elliot Richardson, a top Republican official in the 1970s, for uttering the most convoluted sentence in memory: “And yet, on balance, affirmative action has, I think, been a qualified success.”

Zinsser was exacting and open-minded. Good writing, he believed, could come from fiction or nonfiction.

He praised the history books of David McCullough and Robert Caro, the journalism of Joan Didion, the sports columns of Red Smith.

He welcomed anyone able to write with “vigor, clarity and

humanity.”

“If nonfiction is where you do your best writing, or your best teaching of writing, don’t be buffaloed into the idea that it’s an inferior species,” he suggested. “The only important distinction is between good writing and bad writing.”

Other prescriptions: Contractions are fine if they set a more conversational tone.

Active verbs work better than passive verbs. Keep paragraphs brief and use words that are “short and strong.”

Zinsser, the youngest of four siblings, was born in New York in 1922, the presumed heir to a shellac company his grandfather founded.

But journalism was his calling. He taught himself to type and credited his mother with his appreciation for prose writing, remembering how she would clip articles she liked from newspapers.

He attended Princeton University, but in his sophomore year the U.S. went to war and he left for the military.

He served in Italy and Africa during World War II and was assigned to write histories of his Army unit.

The war would teach him that he could write anywhere, including in a desert tent, hot sand blowing through the flaps.

After returning to the States in 1946, he joined the New York Herald Tribune, where he wrote feature stories, reviewed movies and edited the

Sunday drama section.

Among the cub reporters he gave assignments: Judith Crist, later the film critic for New York magazine, and Roger Kahn, who wrote the classic baseball book “The Boys of Summer.”

Zinsser later wrote freelance pieces for the Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times Magazine and other publications before joining Yale.

In 1974, with more free time than he desired, he took up an idea from his wife and began a how-to text on writing. He hesitated to enter a field defined by the classic “The Elements of Style,” by William Strunk Jr. and Zinsser’s literary hero, E.B. White.

But in looking through “Elements” he saw that it was a set of principles without specific suggestions or guidelines.

“I wouldn’t compete with ‘The Elements of Style,’ ” Zinsser wrote in his memoir. “I would complement it.”

“On Writing Well” was supposed to be called “Writing Well,” but Zinsser added “On” after learning a book by poet Donald Hall already had his original title.

As demanding of himself as he was of others, Zinsser would update his book several times – to correct his failure to use passages from women and nonwhite writers, to note the memoir’s growing popularity, to share thoughts on such innovations as email and blogs.

Rachel Rosenthal dies at 88 The LOS ANGELES TIMES LOS ANGELES – Rachel Rosenthal, the performance and theater artist who embraced environmentalism during a half-century career devoted to the avant-garde, has died in Southern California. She was 88.

Rosenthal died Sunday at her home in west Los Angeles, said Kate Noonan, managing d i r e c t o r o f Rachel t h e R a c h e l Rosenthal Rosenthal Company, the nonprofit theater group the artist founded in 1989. The cause was congestive heart failure, Noonan told the Los Angeles Times.

Rosenthal’s experimental productions often combined elements of drama, dance and music. Nearly all her works touched on the human connection to nature.

For years, she performed with a shaved head – a kind of artistic trademark that she started in 1981.

One of her most lasting creations was the TOHUBOHU! Extreme Theatre Ensemble.

The freshman and sophomore winning student teams competed in the high school level in their geographic region, beating out more than 319 other teams. Competition between student teams throughout Illinois drew to a close at the end of the Spring session with the highest valued portfolios receiving awards, according to a news release from the school.

Teacher Justin Stevenson and his winning team were recognized with medals and award certificates. Stevenson’s top team increased their original $100,000 cash to a final portfolio equity of $124,201.99.

The second place student team includes included freshmen Gavin Carlso, Sean Tomac, Brandon Myles, and Nick Kester. This team increased their original $100,000 cash to a final portfolio equity of $122,925.25.

The third place student team includes freshmen Lily Holderfield and Macey Rodosky, and sophomore McKenzie Zeedyk. This team increased their original $100,000 cash to a final portfolio equity of $122,662.62.

The Stock Market Game program is used in thousands

of classrooms nationwide to help teach core academic subjects while emphasizing the importance of long-term saving and investing. Students work together in teams to conduct research, invest their hypothetical $100,000 cash account and manage their portfolio over time.

Yorkville’s big sixth inning beats Morris

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris junior left-hander Matt Walker retired the first 13 batters he faced in Thursday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East match-up against Yorkville.

He got through the fifth inning unscathed even though the Foxes mustered their first two hits then. In the sixth, however, things went south.

Yorkville, which won the three-game series two games to one, sent 11 batters to the plate, scored six runs and held off the Redskins’ comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 6-4 victory.

“That’s not the first time we’ve seen this,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “We’ve been

playing that way in certain stretches on occasion, and today was not a day we wanted to see it. The fortunate thing is we have time to work on that aspect before the postseason gets here.”

Morris (15-14-1, 5-7) got singles from Jake McDonald and Tom Cheshareck in the bottom of the first inning before Yorkville senior right-hander Nick Sewruk settled in. He retired 10 straight batters before Cody Niewinski ignited a tworun fifth inning that gave the Redskins a 2-0 lead with a single to center.

It is fairly obvious if you scrolled through my social media accounts that many of my friends and contacts are avid outdoors enthusiasts.

The images they post range from big fish, monster deer, to amazing kayak trips. The last few weeks though have seen an abundance of mushroom pictures. Or, more accurately, pictures of morels. Each year thousands of people take to the woods to look for these highly sought after delicacies.

We have been fortunate this season with enough rain to support some good morel hunting, as evidenced from all the pictures I have seen.

When it comes to advice for picking and finding morels, you will get a thousand different answers from a thousand different people. Everyone has their own tips and tricks. The real learning takes place when you put down the articles

and tromp through the woods yourself. With that said, there are a few tried-and-true rules which a person can follow.

Search the Internet and you will garner more advice than you can possibly consume.

Personally, I found six great tips given by Keith Langdon of Full City Cafe in Michigan.

First, don’t pull the morels from the ground. Always use a knife, or snap the stem to break it off. The “fruit” part of the morel is what we see.

The full organism is spread throughout the ground. If you yank the top off you may damage that system and inhibit future growth.

Second, always place the morels in a mesh bag.

The spores will drop as you carry them. This increases the chance that more morels might grow in new places on your property. Carrying the morels in a bag reduces the

Third, make sure you soak them in salt water. Fill a bowl and mix in a tablespoon of salt. Letting them soak for an hour or so will do the trick.

The reason for this? All kinds of insects love to make the cracks and crevices of the morel home. Slugs, millipedes, and numerous other creatures might be in there.

A short salt water bath will drive them out. If your spouse is not a fan of bugs, then make sure they don’t see the results of the salt water soak. I’m not sure if my wife will ever eat a morel again after opening the refrigerator door and seeing what floated to the top of the water. My mistake.

Fourth, gently shake off the morels to rid them of excess water and place them on a paper towel to dry. The salt water bath doesn’t need to be done in the fridge.

Fifth, if you are not going to eat what you have picked in a day or two, freeze the rest.

I know people will disagree with this, but Keith Langdon says they will last many months in regular freezer bags. He like to make sure that they are not touching.

Finally, if you are not sure about the identification of a mushroom don’t pick it or eat it. It is also a good idea to find a quality identification guide to help you in the field.

I myself would be leary of

things posted online. You never know.

If you do find some, harvest those and then look around carefully. Don’t move too far.

The spores that spread will often produce another stand of morels nearby. They blend into the surrounding landscape amazingly well, so take your time. Slow and steady usually pays off the best.

Good luck. I hope you are still able to find a few yet this season. Take the entire family. It is definitely a thrill to find a patch of morels doing their thing.

There are more than 1 billion credit, debit and prepaid cards in circulation in America, and if you use one of them, your information is probably not very safe at all. The financial information of about half of American adults was exposed to hackers in 2014.

They breach the systems of U.S. retailers and collect transaction records, allowing them access to millions of pieces of information.

It’s easy to understand why the U.S. electronic debit system would be a target.

Although it processes about $5 trillion in consumer spending every year, its has the weakest security measures of any country in the industrialized world.

We are starting to catch up.

Credit-card holders who have received a new card recently probably have one with a computer chip embedded in it. The chip helps to create a unique code each time a transaction occurs, making stealing the data relatively useless.

A piece of federal legislation, HR 2205, aims to create federal standards for protecting consumers’ financial information and for notifying them of security breaches that could cause them harm.

Beginning in October, U.S. credit-card issuers including Visa, MasterCard and American Express have said that merchants that install new card-reading technology will not be liable in cases of fraud. Those who do not could be liable.

So there will be some incentives to switch from “swiping” our cards’ magnetic strips through a reader to

“dipping” them into one.

The changeover will take time, and billions to implement at the millions of merchants currently accepting non-cash payments.

Even when fully implemented, the new “chip and signature” and eventually “chip and PIN” technology will do little to discourage fraud where a card is not physically swiped.

For that, we must look to other technologies. One possibility is shifting banks, insurance providers and retailers from now-ubiquitous “dot com” domain names to more specialized, and secure, domain names.

There are other technologies in development, including biometric scanning, and tokenization technology, where a “token” for one-time use – impossible and pointless to duplicate – is created for each specific purchase.

A technology similar to this is what enables people to use their cell phones to make payments.

Congress might also need to be involved in setting benchmarks for security measures and fraud notification.

Lawmakers must also ensure, though, that new technology does not enable creation of massive, ever-more-specific data-mining operations.

Non-cash payment has become the norm among Americans. We favor its convenience and the fact that as consumers, we enjoy almost no fraud liability. Similarly, many Americans prefer to make purchases online.

The thousands of transactions conducted every second in America require still stronger protection.

That reminds me of the joke about the man who goes to his doctor for his annual checkup.

After all of the tests, the doctor says that the man seems healthy, but asks what he does. “I play bridge.”

“What else do you do?”

“Nothing; I only play bridge.”

“What do you do for exercise?”

“I always sit East-West.”

It is almost always better to play in the 4-4 fit, not the 5-3 fit, because you have a good chance to get an extra trump trick by ruffing a loser in one hand or the other. And the 5-3 fit will usually deliver two discards.

A 4-4 side suit can never provide a pitch.

Here, four hearts looks in trouble, given the bad trump break, but it can be made if declarer is careful after West starts the defense with three rounds of diamonds. How? It would be easy to get careless after ruffing the third diamond by assuming a 3-2 trump break.

If declarer immediately draws two rounds of trumps, here he goes down.

South should see these 10 tricks: five spades, three hearts, one club and the diamond ruff.

At trick four, he should run the heart 10. Yes it loses, but East has no answer.

Even if he tries the fourth diamond, South ruffs with his heart nine, draws trumps, and claims.
