hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The idea behind having a “panic button” in an office is to send a silent alarm to security personnel so they can respond.

A panic button recently was pressed at the Grundy County Administration Building. Grundy County sheriff deputies, who man the front desk and provide security for the building, were alerted – but since there isn’t an alarm detection pad at the front desk, deputies had no idea where it originated from, said Maintenance Director Tony Arnold, who spoke last week to the County Board’s Facilities Committee.

“It’s crucial not only to public safety and the safety of the employees, but also to my own staff to be able to respond quickly,” Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Wednesday. “By the time they can find out where it was pressed, outside help could arrive.”

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A 36-yearold Coal City man has been arrested on a warrant on charges of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

An eight-count indictment was secured and a warrant issued Monday for Derrick E. Pink, Coal City Sgt. Tom Logan said Wednesday.

Pink was arrested in Morris at his attorney’s office and was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

Police have investigated

the case for more than a year, Logan said.

Police received information from a cellphone that contained video and photos of Pink allegedly having intercourse with a juvenile, he said.

Pink is being charged with six counts of criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

“Investigator [Jason] Clark did a good job with this case,” Logan said. “This was not a good thing [that happened], but at least we got the charges and we got the indictment.”

to be installed for $530 with a monthly monitoring fee of $5.30. Arnold said the maintenance and IT departments would assist in the installation to help with the cost.

The security desk was once used by a secretary, said Board Chairman David Welter, but that position was moved to an office, and the sheriff’s department now operates security from it.

Before authorities learned the panic button had been pressed by accident, security had gone to Arnold to see if he could help locate where the alarm was. But because of outdated plans for the building, they couldn’t immediately identify which office it was in.

Arnold said the numbers of the rooms on the blueprints do not match the numbers currently on the doors. Staff already began updating the map.

Once the keypad is in place, there will be an updated map with zones marked to coincide with the alarm system so they can respond immediately to the right area. The building also has been made a cellphone-free area, so no one in the building is allowed to be on their mobile phone while in the building. Signs have been posted at the entry and security will enforce it.

MORRIS – The last time Train guitarist Jimmy Stafford was in the Morris Community High School gymnasium, he sat where honors students sat Wednesday night.

Stafford returned to Morris High School as a keynote speaker for the school’s 32nd annual Honors Recognition Night Program, recognizing 185 students spread across the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 classes.

“Thanks for inviting me to your party,” Stafford said.

Stafford is a 1982 graduate of Morris High School and a founding member, lead guitarist and vocalist of three-time Grammy Award-winning rock band Train.

Having not been back in Morris High School since his own graduation, Stafford joked it must’ve been a clerical error that placed him in one of those seats on honors night.

“Other people who sat with me are lawyers and doctors,” Stafford said. “But I get to entertain people across the world, which was my dream.”

Welter said members also increased the amount a committee could approve in various departments without the purchase going to the full board for a vote. He said this is especially important if a server goes down or the Highway Department needs to do immediate work.

“The costs of services have gone up, but the document didn’t reflect that,” Welter said.

“It makes sense that the committee [that] oversees a department would be able to approve a needed purchase without going to the full board.”

Nelson said other language was made more uniform, such as the way a board member is paid a per diem for attending a meeting.

Previous language stated a member needed to be present for two-thirds of the vote, while a different section said it was two-thirds of the duration of the meeting in order to qualify for the per diem.

It now states the board member must be in attendance for two-thirds of the duration of the meeting to qualify.

“From the change arose the issue of who polices the time, so it was added that whoever is taking minutes for the meeting will keep track of time in and time out from the meeting,” Nelson said.

When a board member turns in a per diem for attending a meeting, it will be checked against the minutes to make sure that person qualifies for the payment.

MORRIS – After several revisions, the Grundy County Board voted Tuesday to change its rules of order and procedures.

“The last time these rules were updated was over 10 years ago so we felt it was time to look at them and update them,” Board Chairman David Welter said Wednesday. The approval of the rules includes language that will allow the board to remove the chairman and vice chairman. The Legislative Committee in March decided that if the board had the right to vote on a chairperson, it also should have a way to remove him or her if the need arose.

The board approved the changes 14-0, with board members Debra Warning, Michael Onorato and Ann Gill absent.

Board Vice Chairman David Nelson said Wednesday members initially looked into the rules and procedures to add the removal clause, but quickly found other areas of the document to address.

“Once we delved in to the document we found that there was a lot of outdated terminology,” Nelson said. “For example, it said the board packet would be mailed to the board member’s home address by the U.S. Postal Service. We now deliver them in email.”

The policy changes also will allow for committee members to be removed or changed from one committee to another by the chairperson based on interest and expertise. It also cleaned up the language on the number of people on each committee, allowing committees to operate with fewer than seven members if needed. The Finance and Personnel committees will continue to have seven members.

Morris Community High School Technology Director JD Morrison provided an update Monday night to the District 101 board on where the school is heading into the summer months.

“In the last five years, we’ve advanced from a handful of access points to a centrally-managed system,” Morrison said.

“Now we have 600 connections to our networks at any given moment on campus.”

The capacity of the school’s networks will grow, Morrison said, as he works to improve them. The school uses Aruba, a popular wireless network ser-

vice for schools. Staff, student and guest networks will see more access points.

“We hope Aruba is the last piece for us for a while, one that we can update and upgrade as we go,” Morrison said Wednesday.

He’s budgeted for 10 to 12 additional access points, and eventually wants each classroom to have its own. Morrison said the school has 32 access points, many of which line the building’s hallways, and each can handle 40 to 50 users at once. With the goal of providing college and career technological readiness for students, the school is developing a threeyear strategic plan to further implement use of technology in classrooms, following the SAMR model for technology.

The Substitution, Augmen-

tation, Modification or Redefinition model applies to everyone from technology beginners to high-end users.

At the most basic level, “Substitution” could be used when a teacher assigns his or her favorite project, Superintendent Pat Halloran said Tuesday. The teacher would find a way to implement technology into the assignment.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all model,” Halloran said. “We have pods of teachers who are high-end users. It’s a matter of providing more staff development.”

Halloran said about 90 percent of students have Internet access at home, and much is made of a one-to-one ratio in schools. “We don’t want it to be about the device, we want it to be about the learning,” Hallo-

ran said.

Physical training services approved

In other business, the board voted 7-0 Monday to approve a contract with ATI Physical Therapy for three years of physical training services for all school sports. ATI has provided services in exchange for advertising at games in the past, Halloran said.

The increased focus on concussion detection and prevention, and general safety concerns toward student-athletes in recent years, places a larger responsibility on the school and its trainers.

“It’s become critical to have a stable athletic training ser-

vice,” Halloran said. “Years ago a physical education teacher might be expected to be a trainer or help with injuries, but not anymore.”

Schools have started compensating athletic training services, Halloran said, but students aren’t obligated to visit ATI for injury. Under terms of the contract, it states the school desires to have certain athletic training services, pre-game taping, game training supervision and medical assistance services performed in connection with athletic programs. The contract goes from June 1, 2015, to May 31, 2018. In year one Morris will pay ATI $10,000, $14,000 in year two and $20,000 in year three.

“It’s still quite a deal when you think of how many student-athletes receive the athletic training,” Halloran said.

Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks male volunteers for role models

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With a waiting list of about 70 boys, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties is in need of male volunteers. That’s not necessarily a unique need, said Lisa Morel Las, the organization’s CEO. “All of the Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country have the same dilemma,” Morel Las said.

The organization runs two programs, both needing male volunteers, Morel Las said. The first is the traditional program that connects young people with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, who spend time with his or her Little Brother or Little Sister on a regular basis.

can relate to a youth,” Morel Las said. “We’re not looking for individuals or males to step in and be the dad or be the disciplinarian.”

Instead, Big Brothers take the time to be an influential voice for the children they work with, Morel Las said. Most of the children served by the group come from low-income, single-parent homes. Many are boys from female-run homes.

“We’re really looking for males who can be that extra guidance, but not take the place of the parent,” Morel Las said.

Big Brothers Big Sisters also runs the Mentor 2.0 program, a program connecting adults with high school youth at the Joliet Township High Schools.

It also works with students at high schools in Bolingbrook

and Romeoville.

There are differences in qualifications for the two programs. For the traditional program, Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers must be 18 years or older and have lived in the area for at least a year. For Mentor 2.0, volunteers must be at least 21 and be a college graduate.

“They’re mentoring high school students toward college,” Morel Las said. “We want someone with a college degree who can talk about those experiences.”

For all volunteers, there’s a series of background checks, interviews, assessments and reference checks that must be completed, Morel Las said. The screening process takes about a month to complete. While Big Brothers Big Sisters has many

He performed with a variety of bands, including The Apostles, until Train was formed in 1994. Joining The Apostles was the foundation of Train, except for the lead singer, Stafford said. After an earthquake, the band members decided to move to San Francisco and formed Train with Monahan.

“I just always had this feeling it would work,” Stafford said to the crowd. Even after a failed record deal-seeking trip to New York, the group didn’t quit. They each came up with $5,000 to start recording their own record. Stafford’s share was from his parents.

“My parents were my biggest supporters,” Stafford said.

“They still come to all our shows in the area. I appreciate that very much.”

The band started selling its single “Meet Virginia,” and

Columbia Records, who turned them down in New York the first time, signed the band.

Taking it back to the present, Stafford said Train is embarking on tour next week, and will be in Tinley Park on July 3.

“You guys should all get lawn seats,” Stafford said. “Let me know on Twitter if you have a big group and I’ll come out prior to the show and say hi.”

Stafford got the chance to live his dream, and encouraged students to live theirs.

“In a few years, I’m going to hear stories about what you all do with your dreams,” Stafford told the students. “Go Redskins.”

A senior who wants to be a psychiatrist, Kelsey Hider, said Stafford was the most fun speaker in the four honors nights she’s been a part of.

“The thing I took away from it is dreams are real, and they come true,” Hider said.

“This is an evening to enjoy the fruits of your labor.”

He drove a freight truck for over 25 years for Illinois Valley Trucking in Peru. He retired from Spring Brook Marina in 2010 and had also worked as a truck driver, a.k.a. “Water Boy”, for Timmons Farms for over 15 years.

By JOEDY McCREARY The Associated Press CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina basketball family has lost a second beloved coach in the last few months with the death of Bill Guthridge, Dean Smith’s “perfect sidekick.”

Guthridge, who was Smith’s longtime assistant and later succeeded him as North Carolina’s head coach, was 77. The school announced Wednesday that Guthridge died Tuesday night. The family told team spokesman Steve Kirschner that Guthridge died of heart failure, and that the coach had lived with a heart condition the past seven years.

“This is another terrible loss for the Carolina basketball family,” former North Carolina player and current Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan said in a statement to The Associated Press.

“Coach Guthridge was instrumental in recruiting me to UNC and I have so many great memories of him and the lessons he taught me. I will miss his kindness and wisdom.

“My sympathies go out to his wife, Leesie, and their kids and family.”

Jordan is among many Tar Heels who had tremendous respect for Guthridge.

“If he told me to run through that wall to make me better, I’d hit that wall,” former Tar Heel player and well-traveled college coach Buzz Peterson told AP. “Because I knew coach Guthridge had the best interest for you and wanted to see you succeed.”

“The word ‘assistant’ means you’re helping someone,” current coach Roy Williams said, “and I couldn’t imagine anyone quote ‘helping’ someone any more than coach Guthridge helped coach Smith.”

When Smith retired as Division I’s winningest men’s coach shortly before the 199798 season, Guthridge was promoted to replace him, and he guided the Tar Heels to two Final Fours in three seasons.

Guthridge went 80-28 from 1997-2000, reaching Final Fours in 1998 and 2000 before retiring that June.

“He was in the shadow, but that didn’t bother him. He liked that spot,” Williams said, adding he was “the perfect sidekick” to Smith, who died in February at age 83.

Said Peterson: “They

worked so well together. So much trust between those two.

Just a perfect, perfect team.”

The careers and lives of the two coaches from Kansas were solidly intertwined. Both played college ball in that state – Smith at Kansas, Guthridge at Kansas State – and coached at their alma maters before coming to North Carolina.

Guthridge joined Smith’s staff for the 1967-68 season, starting out as the freshman coach and a co-assistant varsity coach and eventually becoming the Hall of Famer’s most trusted assistant. He also was an assistant to Smith on the 1976 U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal in Montreal.

Peterson – who roomed with Jordan on those early 1980s teams – said Guthridge kept the program going off the court, with the assistant making him run the school’s golf course at 6 a.m. as punishment for once being late.

“We’d always say there were so many time zones – Eastern Standard Time, Central Standard Time – but the most important was GST: Guthridge Standard Time,” Peterson said. “I’d always set my time to GST, 10 minutes ahead.”

North Carolina made 29 NCAA Tournament appearances in Guthridge’s 33 years on the staff and finished no worse than third in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season standings every year – with 16 first-place finishes and 10 more in second.

The Tar Heels either won the ACC Tournament or finished atop the league standings – or did both – in 23 of those seasons. After Smith retired in October 1997, then-athletic director Dick Baddour elevated Guthridge to the top job. That season, he led the Tar Heels to a 34-4 record and the final No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25, earned the ACC Coach of the Year award and guided North Carolina to the Final Four before losing to Utah.

The Tar Heels then went 2410 in 1998-99 but were upset by Weber State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In Guthridge’s final season, he went 18-13 – at the time, the program’s worst finish in decades – but bounced back in the postseason to reach North Carolina’s 15th Final Four.

“It has been a trying time for the University of North Carolina basketball program over the past four months, and our thoughts and prayers are with them again today,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Ed Fouhy, a longtime TV news executive whose Emmy Award-winning career ranged from producing Walter Cronkite’s evening broadcasts to twice overseeing presidential debates, has died.

Fouhy died Wednesday at a nursing home in Chatham, Massachusetts, according to his daughter Beth Fouhy, a former Associated Press reporter and now a senior editor at MSNBC. Ed Fouhy was 80 and died from complications relating to cancer.

A Boston native who attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Boston University’s College of Communications, Fouhy was an executive at all three networks, starting as producer of “CBS Morning News” in 1966.

He won five Emmys and covered stories worldwide, whether traveling with Cronkite for President Nixon’s 1972 trip to Moscow or producing the 1988 and 1992 presidential debates and heading the Commission on Presidential Debates.

He was Washington producer for the “CBS Evening News” with Cronkite from 1969-74, was a producer for NBC News from 1974-77 and Washington bureau chief for ABC News from 19821985.

Students place third in Ag Jeopardy

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – On Monday, Saratoga School and the Morris Police Department held the fifth-grade D.A.R.E. Graduation ceremony at Saratoga School.

The students participated in the 11-week program, which focuses on teaching the students life skills that will help them make positive decisions as they grow up. The program further stresses how being drug free helps build a foundation for the rest of their lives, according to a news release from Morris police.

Chief Tracey Steffes, of the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District, was the featured speaker.

Steffes told the students he attended Saratoga School many years ago and previously was a Morris police D.A.R.E. officer.

He went on to say many things have changed over the years, however, being faced with making choices on a daily basis as a fifth-grade student hasn’t changed.

“We’ve Filled the Pantry for many years in a row with UMI,” Lori Brandt of Brandt Excavating said in a news release. “We think We Care is a great organization and we love the opportunity to give back to the community through their mission.”

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 236 families from its food pantry. We Care re-

ceives a monthly delivery of food for its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores, such as 5.5 oz. cartons of skillet dinners for 8 cents each, 13.3 oz. packages of pasta salad mix for 10 cents each, according to the release. In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program.

The EFP provided spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, beef stew, instant mashed potatoes, grape juice, chicken leg quarters, whole chickens and more.

Phelps leads Morris to senior night win

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It was senior night at the Morris softball game against Coal City, and all three seniors on the roster – Leah Lines, Taya Torkelson and Alex Hardie – contributed to the Redskins’ 12-2 victory.

Lines went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and scored three runs, Torkelson was 1 for 3 with a run scored and Hardie delivered a pinch-hit RBI single.

However, it was freshman Ashley Phelps who stole the show for the Redskins (19-7), as she got the scoring started with a solo home run leading off the bottom of the second inning and capped it with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. For good measure, she went all six innings in the circle, allowing four hits, striking out four and walking three.

“It was a lot of fun today,” Phelps said. “I was glad that we were able to pull out a win on senior night. It felt good to hit a couple of home runs. Everyone did a good job hitting today.

“It makes it a lot easier to go out there and pitch. I have confidence out there, knowing that the team has my back.”

After Morris went down in order in the bottom of the first, Phelps led off the second by hitting a line drive over the fence in left. Lines then reached second on a throwing error. A wild pitch sent her to third and another allowed her to score for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Ryan Friend led off with a single and was forced out at second on a grounder to second by Janelle Brehm. A single to left

She hits the ball hard and when she hits a home run, it’s a line drive home run where the wind doesn’t matter. Plus, she pitched well. She hasn’t been on the mound in a while, so it was good to see her pitch well.

STAFF REPORTS YORKVILLE – The Morris baseball team scored plenty of runs Tuesday in the second game of its Northern Illinois Big 12 East matchup with Yorkville.

The problem was that Yorkville scored one more, and the Foxes topped the Redskins, 9-8.

Tyler Bordner was 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs to lead the offense for Morris (1513-1, 5-6), while Matt Walker was 2 for 2 and scored three runs. Cody Niewinski (RBI) and Emmet Chouinard each had two hits, while Chase Hansen had a double and two RBIs. Morris and Yorkville play the rubber game of the series at Morris at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on the Redskins’ Senior Night.

Coal City 5, Seneca 0: Brad Littleton threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts against only one walk as he ran his scoreless inning streak to 30.

Littleton also connected on his third homer of the season

and drove in two runs.

Joe Quinn and D.J. Budde each contributed three hits and an RBI for the Coalers (235, 11-2) in the Interstate Eight win.

‘Nicked up’ or not, Rose needs to play well The Bulls are banged up.

The Cavaliers look like a beater of a car.

And nobody is crying for either of them. Injuries ceased to be an excuse about three ankle sprains ago in this tough-guy series.

It’s what you do with your pain that matters.

In the Cavs’ Game 5 victory, Kyrie Irving played on a sprained right foot and a left knee that has tendinitis. He hobbled his way to 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting.

Derrick Rose, still struggling with the effects of a stinger from Game 1, missed his last 11 shots Tuesday night. In medical terms, a stinger is defined as “an injury to the nerve supply of the upper arm.” In basketball terms, a stinger can be defined as “um, 0 for 11 isn’t going to cut it.”

“This time of the year, everyone’s nicked up,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday. “Kyrie is out there, he’s playing, LeBron, that’s what your stars do.

Game 6 of this Eastern Conference semifinal will be the biggest game of Rose’s pro career because A) the Bulls are in danger of being knocked out of the playoffs and into an uncertain future, B) Rose has to play well for his bruised team to win and C) the statute of limitations has run out on whatever his previous biggest game was.

In our wired, self-absorbed world, the only thing that matters is “now.” And so here we are, tapping our foot impatiently for more from the Bulls point guard. Now, Derrick. Now would be good.

Is it fair to Rose? Probably not. He is not the player he used to be, before his three knee procedures, and to count on him for consistent greatness is to count on being disappointed. But when he reaches back for some of that

pre-torn-ACL brilliance, the way he did in Games 3 and 4, you get greedy.

Chicago is greedy for more Rose. The Bulls are desperate for it.

Simply put, they are done if he can’t elevate his game Thursday. And that elevation has to include defensive play, too. With Irving limping noticeably in Game 5, there was no excuse for allowing him to have Derrick Rose such an impact. It was as if the Bulls looked at him like a just-swatted bee, thinking the danger was over. Well, no. The stinger was pointing straight up.

“That’s the thing: Great players always have the ability to rise up,” Thibodeau said. “We were concerned about it throughout. Most of these guys are nicked up in some way right now. They’re still dangerous. Doesn’t take much for him to get going.

challenging his shots. He’s very clever in the pick and roll, good finisher. You don’t guard Kyrie or LeBron individually. It takes your whole team.”

Thibodeau said Rose was “nicked up pretty good” Tuesday but that he felt better Wednesday, when the Bulls had a film session. Whether Rose’s shoulder woes caused his shooting woes in Game 5 is immaterial.

When you see what Irving and LeBron James (38 points on a sprained ankle) did Tuesday, it only puts a bigger spotlight on what Rose wasn’t able to do.

Big-time players come up big in big-time games, even when they’re hurt. In Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals, the Pistons’ Isiah Thomas scored 25 points in the third quarter against the Lakers, despite a severely sprained ankle. No one is expecting that from Rose, but 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting for the game isn’t asking the world.

The NBA playoffs are about surviving, individually

and collectively.

The Cavs don’t have Kevin Love because of a shoulder injury. A hamstring injury kept the Bulls’ Pau Gasol out of Games 4 and 5, but he said he’d play Thursday. He said Wednesday he still hadn’t jumped since sitting out with injury. Jumping: kind of important in basketball.

With the Bulls down 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, it’s all hands on deck, even if those hands are broken.

“Right now, it’s win or go home,’’ Gasol said. “There’s nothing left besides [Thursday’s] game. What percentage I’ll be able to play, I don’t know. But whatever percentage [it is], that’s what I’ll give.’’

The Bulls need Rose close to 100 percent, or whatever 100 percent is for him now.

They need the best he has.

And he needs to remember that pain is his friend.

Noah, Gasol not lacking confidence

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – As far as Joakim Noah was concerned, he already has plans Sunday.

“We’re going back,” the Bulls big man said to several bystanders at the Advocate Center, as he headed toward a waiting media scrum.

The “going back” Noah was referring to was Cleveland for a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference semifinal. That means Noah already was anticipating Thursday’s do-or-die Game 6 as a Bulls win.

“These games are coming down to one or two possessions,” Noah said, when asked why all the confidence. “We feel like we can do a few things better” on Thursday.

“We know they’re gonna throw some punches and we’re gonna throw some punches.

It’s just another round.”

But a round the Bulls now

Up next Game 6, Cleveland at Bulls, 7 p.m. Thursday, ESPN, AM-1000 will be fighting with a heavier glove. After missing the past two starts – both Bulls losses – with a strained left hamstring, veteran Pau Gasol declared after the Wednesday film session that he would return for Game 6 – ready or not.

“I was able to do some shooting for the first time and move OK,” Gasol said.

“So made some good progress [Wednesday]. No residual pain from [Tuesday]. Making progress, but at the end of the day, [Thursday] is the game, and I’ll do everything I can to help the team.

“I’ll be out there. Whichever way I can be I will be.”

Which will be the big question for Gasol. Just how much help can he be admittedly only at about 50 to 60 percent?

“I mean right now it’s win or go home,” Gasol said.

“There’s nothing left but [Game 6]. What percentage I’ll be able to play? I don’t know, but whatever percentage I will be, that’s what I’ll give.”

Gasol might be the perfect addition in Game 6.

Forget his two championships with the Lakers and the experience that comes from that. Those intangibles come without saying. It’s what he did to the Cavaliers in Game 1, shooting 10 for 16 for 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. It’s the fact that both Bulls wins in this series came with Gasol starting. More importantly, with rookie Nikola Mirotic struggling and Noah playing on one good leg, Gasol allows the Bulls to have more options in the frontcourt.

OPINION Ruling on pensions is bad news for us SPRINGFIELD – Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.

Government worker unions had their hopes fulfilled Friday when the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously ruled that public employee pension benefits cannot be cut. So, if you are a retired government worker, I suppose it is time to rejoice. But if you are a citizen dependent on government services or someone who works for state or local government, look out.

The pension reform measure sponsored by House Speaker Mike Madigan and signed into law by then-Gov. Pat Quinn has been ruled unconstitutional. The state has underfunded pensions to the tune of $111 billion.

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner presented an austere budget that cut spending but didn’t close a single state facility. The number of state workers would go up slightly under his proposal.

If you think that is going to hold after the high court’s ruling, dream on. The contract for state government’s largest labor union expires next month. And what have been contentious labor negotiations are going to turn brutal.

Really, brutal. Why? The Illinois Supreme Court just blew a $2.2 billion hole in the 2016 budget that begins July 1. That is how much in anticipated savings evaporated from the spending plan because of the court’s ruling.

And that means layoffs and steep cuts to state services.

There is no avoiding it.

You’ll hear some folks call for raising the income tax.

Illinois, along with New Jersey, leads the nation in people leaving. High taxes and a lousy business climate are the main culprits for this exodus from the Land of Lincoln.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

VIEWS Scott Reeder Folks want to live where they can find jobs and keep their money. Imagine that.

Regardless, Rauner has expressed reticence for raising the income tax rate. In fact, he has said he wants to see it lowered before he leaves office. It’s unlikely there would be enough votes in the General Assembly to override a Rauner veto.

So that leaves the General Assembly with few real choices. One long-term solution would be to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot allowing for the reduction of future pension benefits to be earned by government workers.

After all, why should you and I pay higher taxes to ensure government workers receive more generous retirement benefits than we can hope to ever receive?

Following the high court’s ruling Monday, Rauner called for such a plan to amend the constitution. In the mean time we face cuts. Steep ones.

Current state employees will face job losses.

Basic state services like education, public safety and human services could end up on the chopping block.

The state Supreme Court fulfilled the wishes of government worker unions.

But the time may come soon when union members wish it hadn’t.

Jobs report offers little to brag about At first glance, the nation’s jobs report for April, released Friday, appeared positive, until you looked below the surface – the already-disappointing job creation figures for March had to be adjusted downward and wages in April had barely inched up.

A respectable 223,000 jobs were created last month, while the unemployment rate ticked down by one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.4 percent.

That was an improvement over March’s depressing figure of 126,000 new jobs, which was revised down to 85,000 in the April report.

Therefore, in March-April the economy averaged only

154,000 jobs created per month, barely enough to cover the monthly 150,000 people who start looking for jobs.

Wages showed only a 0.1 percentage point rise in April, for an annual growth rate so far of 2.2 percent, only slightly above inflation. That means average American workers scarcely gained ground at all.

Meanwhile, a different report last week showed that the nation’s top 25 hedge fund managers – all men, no women – had compensation in 2014 of $11.6 billion, or $464 million each.

Another discouraging figure was the U.S. trade deficit, which reached $51.4 billion, the highest in six and a half

years. The shortfall in U.S. exports to imports jumped $15.5 billion, or 43 percent, from February’s $35.9 billion.

What are Americans to make of this? First, the economy is creating jobs, but at a disappointing rate. Second, the rich (and not just hedge fund managers) are doing well while the middle class’ standard of living is stuck in low gear. Third, the United States is performing poorly on international trade.

Now is the perfect time for the 2016 presidential candidates to tell the public what they would do about these economic problems if elected – in practical specifics, not fuzzy exhortations.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In bridge, we have suit fits, about which some players have preconceptions. In this deal, North-South have a 5-3 spade fit and a 4-4 heart fit. Which is preferable?

Today we will study the 5-3 fit, tomorrow the 4-4.

Against four spades, West leads off with the diamond ace. What should happen?

In the auction, after North jumped to two no-trump and South rebid three hearts, North should have raised hearts, but gave preference to spades.

South continued with three no-trump to describe his 5-4-2-2 distribution, and North removed to four spades because he was worried about diamonds. That was understandable, although here, because diamonds were 4-4, three no-trump would have been a lucky make. In contrast, four spades was an unlucky fail.

At trick one, East signaled enthusiastically with his diamond 10. When encouraging, play the highest card you can afford -- no half measures. West cashed his diamond king, then continued with another diamond, which South ruffed.

Everything looked easy to South; surely he had five spades, four hearts and one club.

But after drawing trumps, he started on the hearts. When West discarded on the second round, declarer led a low club toward his queen, but his luck was still out. West had the king and South had to lose one heart, two diamonds and one club.

when I work in the yard – jeans and T-shirts. What an unprofessional image they presented to these youngsters. They missed a wonderful opportunity to be a positive example of women in the workforce by displaying a total disregard for their appearance or the impact they have on young minds. – Sad

But that was then and this is now. On the bright side, one would hope teachers gain the respect and affection of their students less on how they look and more on the love of learning they are able to instill.

Dear Abby: I recently took two days off from work to stay home with a cold.

When I returned to work, a co-worker started commenting on how I might be contagious. Then during our lunch break, she commented she didn’t want me to sit next to her “because she didn’t want to get sick.” I told her there were plenty of other seats if she preferred to sit elsewhere, and sarcastically thanked her for making me feel “welcomed.”

She continues to bring it up and is now pushing everyone to use hand sanitizer and sanitize their work areas. I’m offended. I think it’s rude. A couple of co-workers are now sick with similar symptoms.

Is she being rude, or am I oversensitive? And how should I respond? – Offended

co-worker isn’t rude; she’s a germaphobe and with good reason. If everyone was careful to use hand sanitizer and sanitize their workstations and shared surfaces – door knobs, light switches – there would be fewer individuals taking sick days. In a case like this, you should stop being defensive. The best way to respond to the woman is not to respond at all.
