hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The search for a new county administrator has come to an end in Grundy County with the board approving the hiring of Doug Pryor on Tuesday night.

“We accepted several applications from interested people,” Board Chairman David Welter said Tuesday. “We Doug Pryor interviewed the people who met the requirements and feel that Doug’s vast knowledge in economics and budgeting set him apart.”

Pryor will be leaving his current position as Vice President of the Grundy Economic Development Council to accept the position with the county starting June 1.

Former County Administrator Dan Duffy also joined the county from the GEDC in 2007.

The board approved the hiring after a brief executive session with a 14 to 1 vote with Millie Dyer voting no and Debra Warning, Ann Gill and Michael Onorato absent.

Dyer also voted against the recommendation during the personnel meeting, because she didn’t feel he was the right person for the job.

The county has had four administrators since 2011.

Pryor will be paid $90,000 a year and given two weeks vacation to start, with a third week of vacation added after the first year.

The finance committee approved in March going up to $100,000 for the candidate selected.

According to Welter, there also is a severance and termi-

nation clause in the contract that requires the county to give Pryor a 60-day notice for a noncause termination.

Pryor is a graduate of Minooka Community High School and has lived in Morris for the past 14 years.

“It’s a great opportunity to work with this group,” Pryor said Tuesday. “I have the experience with industry in Grundy County and I have a finance and economic background I feel will benefit the county.”

He said he feels his role is to get information in front of the board members so they can make the important decisions that they are faced with.

“The role of administrator is to help others do their job better,” he said.

In addition to his role at the GEDC, Pryor also has taught Economics at Dominican University in River Forest.

Pryor publicly thanked GEDC CEO Nancy Ammer, who was present at the board meeting, for her mentoring while he was with the GEDC. He said his experience in the classroom will benefit his job because it has helped him to learn how to articulate complex situations so that they are easily understood.

“I’m not here to put my opinions into it,” he said Tuesday. “My job is to get good information in front of the board to help them do their job.”

Welter said he feels Pryor’s knowledge of budgets and the economy will fit well with the direction the county is pursuing with it’s strategic plan.

“I look forward to his budgeting skills and the ability to forecast long term,” Welter said. “Forecasting long term goes back to our strategic plan with budgeting for a longer term than one year.”

MORRIS – The ability to look into the past with ease has become a reality at the Grundy County Coroner’s office with the installation of a computer and digitized records dating back to the 1800s.

Chad Hrechko sat at the computer last week to see what was in some of the files when he stumbled across a familiar name: Mike Hrechko, his father.

“My dad was the part-time police chief in the 1970s in Minooka,” said Hrechko, who is a Grundy County Sheriff’s Deputy. “There was a report from an accident that took place at Ridge Road and Mondamin in 1978 and his name was on there. It was neat to see.”

Hrechko said he was only 4 months old when his dad typed the report using the station’s typewriter, and he said it was fascinating to think about that.

Hrechko spoke to his dad who remembered the accident, 37 years later.

Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said his office received Death Certificate Surcharge grant money from the state to digitize records from 1859 to 2004.

District-101 board OKs tentative budget

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School District 101 board voted 7-0 Monday to approve the 2015-16 fiscal tentative amended budget, although it won’t be officially approved until June.

An increase of 2.1 percent in expenditures and a 1.5 percent decrease in revenue are standout items from the tentative amended budget.

Board Secretary Judie Roth commended Superintendent Pat Halloran’s work on the budget Monday.

“It’s really not that big of a change when you’re balancing around $15 million [in revenues and expenditures],” Halloran said Tuesday.

The district received more in tax increment finance dollars than it expected and saw an increase in local tax levy dollars, accounting for a $67,769 increase in revenue from local sources.

That increase wasn’t as significant as it could be because revenue from state sources decreased by $144,161. Halloran said a fourth categorical payment could come after the budget is approved.

“We won’t know more on that until after the budget is passed in June,” Halloran said

“It’s really not that big of a change when you’re balancing around $15 million [in revenues and expenditures].”

As far as expenditures, the district saw a $123,009 increase in instruction, which covers salaries, benefits and equipment.

Halloran said some teachers saw pay increases based on the salary schedule in the district’s collective bargaining agreement with teachers.

The raises can be attained through tenure or extra schooling, such as a teacher with a bachelor’s degree earning a master’s degree. Some of the costs were for coaching and interscholastic programs, Halloran said.

Suit filed in construction worker death

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A lawsuit has been filed against five companies in the death of Russell Bull, a 50-year-old Coal City construction laborer killed last June while clearing trees for a construction project.

Bull was killed while he and other construction crew members cleared trees June 10. Employees of D Construction of Coal City were at a project site in a field south of Coal City and east of Broadway Street.

Bull was killed when a metal object came off the wood chipper being used at the site, Grundy County Coroner John Callahan reported at the time.

Grundy joins Click It or Ticket campaign MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office will join the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and hundreds of local law enforcement agencies across the state for the 2015 Illinois Click It or Ticket campaign, which kicked off Sunday.

During the campaign, officers will be cracking down both day and night on motorists who fail to wear their seat belt in the front and backseat, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

In Illinois, as of Jan. 1, all drivers and passengers must wear seat belts in all seating positions in the car, not just the front seat. During statewide observational surveys conducted by IDOT in 2014, the overall usage rate for rear seat occupants was 84 percent versus 94.1 percent for drivers and front seat passengers.

“Memorial Day weekend kicks off the busy summer driving season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” Sheriff Kevin Callahan said in the release. “Our deputies are prepared to ticket anyone, front or back seat, who is not wearing a seat belt.”

In 2013, back seat passengers in Illinois accounted for 48 fatalities and over 7,500 injuries. Out of those 48 fatalities, 24 of them were not wearing their seat belt, according to the release. Provisional numbers show that during the 2014 Memorial Day weekend there were 12 fatalities on Illinois roadways. Three of those fatalities were alcohol-related.

Remember – wearing your seat belt is your best defense against an impaired driver.

While this year’s Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign runs from May 11 through May 25, officers are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round.

Also remember in Illinois, children are required to be in a car seat or booster seat until at least age 8 and all children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat.

JJC culinary arts student becomes speaker; switched careers from computer engineering

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After Javier Reyes earned a degree in computer engineering in Mexico, he decided to switch careers and study culinary arts – which led him to cook for Gov. Bruce Rauner this year.

Now Reyes, 34, is ready to graduate Friday from Joliet Junior College, where he sharpened his passion for cooking. He also was chosen as this year’s student speaker at commencement, where he will talk to other graduates like him.

“I’ve always been passionate about cooking,” said Reyes, who came to the U.S. more than two years ago to study at JJC. “For me it was just a whole 180 [degrees] from what I was doing, from computer engineering to cooking.

Knowing that I can do this was amazing.”

Michael McGreal, JJC Culinary Arts Department chair, said Reyes is a “very intelligent young man,” who works quietly but passionately.

“Where maybe a typical college student might get an assignment and they have other

things to do – they may want to get it done quickly – that was not Javier,” McGreal said. “He did as best as he could possibly do.”

This year, Reyes was chosen along with 12 other students to give Rauner and state lawmakJavier ers a taste of what JJC had Reyes to offer at the executive mansion in Springfield, JJC officials said. Reyes remembered that as a proud moment.

McGreal said Rauner and other state officials were gracious, even coming into the kitchen to meet with the students. Javier beamed with pride, he said.

“Javier was literally able to talk one-on-one with [Rauner],” McGreal said.

McGreal said Reyes has transformed in the two years he’s been with the culinary arts program. He said he’s become someone all students flock to for advice on projects or techniques.

The computer is set up on a small desk in the coroner’s office at the Grundy County Administration Building, 1320 Union St. in Morris.

Those wishing to search records will need to come to the office and give the name and estimated year of the record so they can look through the documents that have been scanned. One folder on the computer’s desktop holds the scanned copies of reports sorted by year, where each folder has the person’s name.

Inside the folder with the deceased person’s name are any documents filed with the coroner’s office, including transcripts of coroner inquests stating the cause of death.

Callahan said Grundy County averages 380 deaths a year, and 60 to 80 of those deaths have an actual death investigation by the coroner’s

office.

There are far fewer files from the earlier years, and those are filled with car accidents, farm accidents and suicides. One case from the 1970s is a record of an unidentified black woman who was found unclothed and shot in Erienna Township. The file includes a newspaper article talking about her burial and appeared to remain unsolved. Another folder on the desktop includes folders from the 1940s through 2004 with names of the deceased, which include photographs from the investigation.

Deputy Coroner Karen Connor said people requesting the files will be guided to the folder with the documents and should be warned that many of the photographs are graphic, and could be offensive to family members or those viewing the records. The files filled 50 boxes and were photographed as the boxes were picked up by SBS so chain of custody could be documented.

Connor said people have always come to the office to seek records, typically when they are working on their family history. Others come because they want clarity as to what

Peter Gay, intellectual historian, dead at age 91

By HILLEL ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Peter Gay, a popular and prize-winning historian who meticulously traced the rise of secular Western thought, from a prize-winning history of the Enlightenment to a best-selling biography of Sigmund Freud, has died.

Gay died Tuesday at his home in Manhattan, his stepdaughter Elizabeth Glazer told The Associated Press. He was 91 and died of “old age,” Glazer said.

The German-born Gay wrote more than 25 books, including a five-part series on the 19th century bourgeois and two volumes on the Enlightenment. He also wrote about Mozart, 19th century fiction, 20th century cinema, and, in his highly regarded “Weimar Culture: The Outsider as Insider,” about art and intellectual life in Germany before Hitler’s rise.

Western Europe was the setting for much of his work and Freud was Gay’s recurring subject. An urbane and

non-believing Jew, like Freud, Gay found in him not only a compelling life and body of work, but an approach to history. Gay studied psychoanalytic training at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis and he advocated Freudian techniques for historical scholarship, rejecting fears that the field would be reduced to formulas about childhood desires and neuroses.

“Freud was not a historian, but he knew that men’s minds, even their unconscious minds, change across time and differ across class,” Gay once wrote.

“Concern for individuality, that mark of the historian, pervades all of Freud’s writings.”

Gay wrote several works on Freud and summed up his findings in the best-selling “Freud: A Life For Our Time.”

Freud’s integrity had been questioned and his theories challenged, but Gay praised his “long and unrivaled career as the archaeologist of the mind.” In “Modernism: The Lure of Heresy,” published in 2007, Gay invoked Freud as a hidden influence upon some of the most important artists of

the past century.

“If much of the Freudian view of the human animal present and past appears to be fairly commonplace today, that is so because for a century much of the respectable world has made its progress toward him,” Gay wrote in the book’s preface.

Gay also is credited, through a series of essays and books in the 1950s and ’60s, with changing the image of Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire from impractical idealists to astute visionaries able to work within the systems they helped overturn.

Although criticized for focusing too narrowly on Western Europe, Gay helped define the era itself as a completion of the revival of ancient Greek culture that began with the Renaissance.

Gay won the National Book Award in 1967 for “The Enlightenment: An Interpretation. The Rise of Modern Paganism” and received a gold medal in 1996 from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2004, he was given a lifetime achievement award

by the American Historical Association, which praised him as a scholar who “incarnates the life of the mind.”

A longtime professor at Yale University, he retired from the school in 1993.

He was born Peter Froehlich in Berlin in 1923, his father “a striving bourgeoisie” and self-made man, his mother a clerk and “undisputed beauty” who suffered from tuberculosis and from psychosomatic illnesses that made a lasting impression on her son.

Gay was a perpetually underweight child who preferred books to food, giving in to such superstitions as believing that a cherry pit could cause appendicitis. He read the Westerns of German author Ernest May, and was later deeply impressed and influenced by the prose of Ernest Hemingway and E.B. White. Unintended inspiration came from an anti-Semitic teacher who, when Gay was around 12, declared that “Jews always exaggerate.”

“I have often wondered whether my unremitting search for precision in my

writing was fueled by this outburst,” Gay wrote in the memoir “My German Question: Growing up in Nazi Berlin.”

The Froehlichs were assimilated, but no more welcome than other Jews in Hitler’s Germany. The family fled in 1939, first to Cuba and then to the United States. Gay, who changed his last name upon becoming an American citizen, attended the University of Colorado as an undergraduate and received a master’s and Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Gay wrote in a fluid, assured style and drew upon a vast knowledge of history, culture, philosophy and psychology. In his memoir, however, he noted that his extensive scholarship on European culture included little about the Nazis.

“The truth is, I must confess, that I have deliberately refused to dwell on the mass murder of Europe’s Jews,” he wrote. “We all have our defenses to help us get through life and these happen to be mine. I am not proud of them, but I see no need to apologize for them.”

Transfers approved

In other business, the board approved 7-0 Monday the transfer of $350,000 from the Transportation Fund to the Operations and Maintenance Fund, to help offset costs associated with capital projects.

In the last year, the school has improved a locker room, auditorium lighting and outdoor lighting, Halloran said.

The district encountered some unanticipated costs for asbestos removal and structural strengthening along the way.

Savings in transportation costs as a result of shared busing has allowed the district to assist the Operation

and Maintenance Fund with surplus dollars.

“It was a great indirect benefit from one fund to another,” Halloran said Tuesday. “We have to look at all options.”

Halloran said the district’s biggest project of 2015-16 will likely come this summer.

The board approved the first step in that project Monday when it voted to allow Building and Grounds Director Stephen Lutz to seek bids to remove the school’s old boiler and install two new boilers in the 1970s wing.

“We are working on a preapproval application through the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity’s Boiler Efficiency Program, which could possibly provide some of the funding for the project,” Lutz said at the board meeting.

Lutz told the board prices for two boilers are estimated at $50,000 to $60,000 total, but he’s come across two boilers used for two months by another school that still are under warranty. The new boilers would be far more efficient than the current one installed in 1978, he said.

Because let’s face it, spring and early summer have a tendency to smack you with cool, wet weather when you’re least expecting it – and when you are most desiring sun and heat. Which is why the delicate flavors of dill and butter sometimes just don’t fit.

For those evenings, I came up with a zippy sauce that’s something of a cross between Italian pesto and Argentinian chimichurri, but with a hefty dose of Asian peanut sauce just to make it interesting.

The sauce can be prepped up to a day in advance, but don’t add the peanuts until just before serving. The portsoaked raisins also can be done in advance. Just drain and refrigerate as needed (but they will taste best if you let them come to room temperature before serving).

ROASTED CARROTS WITH PORT RAISINS AND SPICY PEANUT-HERB SAUCE Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 4

1⁄3 cup port wine 1⁄2 cup golden raisins

1 pound medium carrots

Olive oil Kosher salt 1⁄2 fresh basil leaves 1⁄2 cup fresh parsley leaves 1⁄3 cup red wine vinegar 2 cloves garlic 1⁄4 teaspoon red pepper flakes Pinch sugar 1⁄2 cup chopped unsalted (or lightly salted) roasted peanuts Ground black pepper Heat the oven to 425 F. Line a baking sheet with foil and coat with cooking spray.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, bring the port to a bare simmer. Add the raisins, stir to submerge, then set aside to soak.

Cut each carrot into quarters lengthwise. Pile the carrots onto the prepared baking sheet, then drizzle them with a bit of oil and a sprinkle the carrots. Serve warm or at room or cauliflower. of salt. temperature.

OPINION Inside Rauner’s ‘working groups’ I recently obtained a document distributed by the governor’s office detailing the membership list and meeting times and locations of the secret state legislative “working groups.”

The governor’s office has insisted that not only should legislators dummy up about what goes on at the groups’ meetings – which are designed to forge compromises on the governor’s “Turnaround Agenda” – but also that outsiders should not even know the membership of the groups or when and where they’re getting together.

Many moons ago, I began writing about private legislative caucus meetings. That didn’t endear me to the powers that be, but I thought the meetings were too important to the Statehouse process to ignore.

So, I exerted a bit of effort and eventually scored the governor’s document.

The working group tasked with hammering out a potential tax hike is so secret that its very existence would not be confirmed by members I contacted.

Legislators were reportedly warned by the governor’s office that if any word leaked about the group then Gov. Bruce Rauner would refuse to increase taxes.

The group was nicknamed “Vegas” by some of its members because what happens in the group is supposed to stay in the group. It’s official name is listed as “HOLD” on the governor’s document.

“They were that afraid to put things in writing,” explained one source. “So just ‘hold’ this slot open.”

I wrote recently about the “Transforming Government” group, which featured the Democratic throwdown with the governor’s staff over a legislative term limits constitutional amendment.

His “Pension Reform” working group is comprised of Democratic Rep. Elaine Nekritz, Senate Democrat Daniel Biss, and House GOPs Tom Morrison and Ron Sandack, along with Senate GOPs Bill Brady and Pam Althoff.

The “Capital Plan” working group is comprised of Senate Dems John Sullivan and Marty Sandoval, Senate GOPs Dave Syverson and Karen McConnaughay, House Dems Bob Rita and Christian Mitchell and House GOPs Norine Hammond and Ed Sullivan.

The “Budget Implementation” working group is huge.

The last meeting was attended by 38 people, including all legislative appropriations committee chairs.

The “Unemployment Insurance” working group will use an “agreed bill” process to find a way to bring down employer costs. Republican Sens.

Don’t allow hazing repeat It was a senseless way for a young man to die.

David Bogenberger was a 19-year-old only a couple of months into his freshman year at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. On Nov. 1, 2012, he and 18 other Pi Kappa Alpha pledges were encouraged by fraternity members to drink four-ounce glasses of vodka in rapid succession during a secret hazing ritual.

The pledges received decorated buckets in which to be sick. When they passed out, participants positioned their bodies so they wouldn’t choke while unconscious, police have said.

Only Bogenberger never woke up. His blood-alcohol content was 0.351 percent at the time of his death. He drank so much his heart stopped.

Shortly before the 22 former fraternity members who were at the party that

night were convicted and sentenced in connection with their son’s death, Bogenberger’s parents said the best they could hope for was that others would be spared their son’s fate.

Bogenberger’s story should be told every year to every new class at NIU. In fact, the story should be told to all high school seniors in the area every year. Students need to understand alcohol can be lethal, and no code or brotherhood gives them the right to humiliate and endanger the lives of others.

Bogenberger’s death occurred at what was a recognized student organization at NIU, underscoring the need for university officials to strictly enforce rules when it comes to social events held by these organizations. This holds true at all colleges and universities.

Greek organizations and others might chafe at re-

quirements they register any events with alcohol, that they limit any event to four hours, that a guest sign-in list must be kept, and that organization funds can not be used to purchase alcohol.

They might find taking alcohol education courses a waste of their time.

That’s too bad.

The Bogenbergers’ attorney, Peter Coladarci, also has called for eliminating the pledging system, where prospective members essentially audition to join the group. This system puts the younger students under the power of the established fraternity members – and it’s this setup that led to Bogenberger’s death. What would the Greek system be without pledging? It would be free from the temptation for older members to humiliate and degrade younger ones. We suspect Greek life would not fall apart as a result.

Morris girls cruise past Yorkville

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For the last two seasons, any time the Morris girls soccer team has played Yorkville, it has a tight, hardfought game. In fact, earlier this season, the two teams batted to a 2-all tie at Yorkville.

The home field did the Redskins good Tuesday, as they hammered the Foxes, 7-0, on senior night in a Northern Illinois Big 12 East game.

“This was right up there as far as the best we have played this season,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said. “It certainly meant the most, being senior night and being against Yorkville.”

After spending a bulk of the first half in the offensive end, the Morris girls soccer team finally broke through against Yorkville, taking a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Morris (8-6-1, 1-5-1) had multiple scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes, only to see shots blocked or go wide. But, the constant pressure finally

paid off.

The Redskins were able to play through the physical style of defense employed by Yorkville and advance the ball toward the net.

With 23 minutes left in the first half, Katherine Gallick had a clear path to the goal after a through pass by Amanda Grant, but Gallick’s shot was blocked. A few minutes later, Grant passed to Emily Burling, who got off a shot that was also blocked.

Finally, with 16:05 left, Alexa Rain capitalized on a rebound off her own shot and

put it in the net for a 1-0 lead.

Just a minute later, Summer Shaw delivered a corner kick that Grant booted just wide of the net.

Morris kept pressing the issue and, with 8:38 left in the first half, senior Dorissa Gutierrez scored with an assist from Burling for a 2-0 Morris lead.

Gallick was just a couple of inches wide just 40 seconds later and a goal by Burling with 2:30 left was waved off due to an offsides call.

The onslaught continued, as Grant scored again, getting an assist from Rain, to make it 4-0 with 33:53 to play.

Kelly Monk scored with 27:23 left, and Gallick scored off an assist from Mya Shannon with 22:45 to play to make it 6-0.

Summer Shaw then scored from 10 yards out with 17:18 left, making the score 7-0 and cutting the remaining time of the game in half.

“This is the best game we have had,” Gallick said. “Every time we play Yorkville, something seems to bring out the best in us.

“The 7-0 score shows that. It felt really good to get a goal on senior night. It was awesome that so many different girls got to score tonight. Also, it gave the freshmen and sophomores a taste of how exciting it can be.”

Meanwhile, the Morris defense, headed by Shannon, Emma Dingbaum, Gallick, Amanda Schmidt, Shaw and Amber Misek, prevented Morris goalie Maren Bashor from facing many shots.

“I was happy to see so many girls score,” Porter said. “We wanted to get Burling a goal on senior night, and I thought she

Bowman tight-lipped about roster plans

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com Two years ago, Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said firmly that he felt Brandon Pirri was the prime candidate to step into a major role with the team the following season.

Pirri was traded by the end of the season. Last year, Bowman said it would be Jeremy Morin’s turn to take the next step.

Morin was sent packing in December. Neither player was able to win over Joel Quenneville, or fit in his system.

This spring? Well, it’s not about proclamations for Bowman. It’s about options. And he is giving Quenneville as many options as he possibly can through an impressive signing binge.

“It’s been proven time and again that competition raises people’s games,” Bowman told the Sun-Times. “When there

are nine candidates for two spots, you’re better off than if you have three candidates. If, for whatever reason, the guys don’t play as well, or don’t fit the way you envision, and you only have three of them, you’re in a tough spot. It’s hard to find players in October. We’re trying to manage our assets and prepare ourselves for the future.”

That future remains uncertain thanks to the sagging Canadian dollar and the potentially stagnant salary cap.

With 13 players locked up for more than $63 million (the cap is expected to be around $71 million), new contracts owed to Brandon Saad and Marcus Kruger, and seven or eight other spots to be filled, the Hawks certainly will be parting with at least one core player, and will be getting younger in a hurry.

And while the Hawks are high on several of their top prospects in Rockford – for-

wards Mark McNeill and Phil Danault, and defenseman Stephen Johns, among others – Bowman has been very aggressive recently in the freeagent market. He signed college standouts Kyle Baun (who performed very well in his four-game NHL stint), Tanner Kero and defenseman Michael Paliotta; picked up another Swedish defenseman in Erik Gustaffsson; and landed the big prize in Russian forward Artemi Panarin.

All come cheap, and all have high ceilings – particularly Panarin, dubbed the Russian Patrick Kane.

The 23-year-old led his KHL team in points with 26 goals and 36 assists in 54 games, and has five goals and five assists through seven games with Russia in the ongoing World Championships in Prague.

“We didn’t sign him to be a Rockford player,” Bowman said of Panarin. “He’s a very talented player. He’s at a good

age, too. He’s not 18, but he’s still got a lot of years ahead of him. He’s a dynamic player.”

While the signings came in bunches recently, they were the culmination of yearlong scouting and recruiting efforts.

The job’s never finished.

And while Bowman is enjoying a third straight trip to the Western Conference final (expected to begin Sunday in Anaheim), his focus is always split between the present and the future. And he knows a difficult, possibly tumultuous summer awaits him.

“We’ve been preparing for the offseason all year long,” Bowman said. “We’ve had ideas in our head and we’ve had discussions all year about what we’re going to be doing.

They’re parallel tasks with trying to prepare ourselves for the next round.”

Bowman, of course, offered no specifics about the big-picture plan.

Toews: ‘... We know that we have to get to that next level’

BY MARK POTASH The Chicago Sun-Times A team with history of rising to the challenge, the Blackhawks outdid themselves in beating the Minnesota Wild in the second round of the playoffs: They swept the series without ever trailing – a feat not even their championship teams could accomplish.

The challenge in the Western Conference final is to reach yet another level against the Anaheim Ducks, who are the No. 1 seed in the conference and have more firepower than Minnesota. The Wild were 0-for-4 on breakaways against the Hawks. With Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf & Co., the Ducks are more likely to make the Hawks pay.

“As the games get tougher, we know that we have to get to that next level,” Hawks captain Jonathan Toews said. “We need to keep pushing harder

and harder.

“We have confidence we can win games on the road or even at home, whether we have a team down 2-0 or 3-0 and they’re playing with their backs against the wall and we still have that hunger to go out there and outplay them.”

But this year, more than any in recent memory, he has options, too. And he’s going to need them.

“You think things should work and make perfect sense, you get to October, and sometimes it’s not working,” Bowman said. “So you have to have a lot of options. That’s what we’re doing here. We’re trying to build an organization with a plan in mind. We’re not just signing guys willy-nilly.”

Damon Runyon, a newspaperman and author who died in 1946, said, “It may be that the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong – but that is the way to bet.”

No-trump contracts are races.

Both sides are trying to establish tricks, and the first to succeed usually wins – but only if once those winners can be cashed, the player holding them is either on lead or can take a timely trick.

How is that relevant to this deal?

South is in three no-trump, and West leads the spade eight. How should the play go?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade (given the lead), four diamonds and three clubs.

Maybe clubs will break 3-3, but that is unlikely. If the clubs are not 3-3, South will have to knock out the heart ace. But then maybe East will run his spade suit.

What should happen at trick one?

East needs to realize that if West has led a singleton, the defenders have no chance. Also, if West holds two spades, declarer has only one spade stopper. And there is an important principle: If declarer has one trick in the suit you are trying to establish, make him take it as quickly as possible – trick one is not too early.

Here, East should play an encouraging spade nine at trick one. South will win, try the clubs, and either cash out for down one or turn to hearts and lose one heart, one club and five spades for down three.

Note that if East wins the first trick, declarer romps home with an overtrick or two.

Potassium-rich diet can help lower blood pressure Dear Dr. K: I have high blood pressure. As I expected, my doctor told me to cut down on sodium. But he also told me to increase my potassium intake.

Why? Dear Reader: Sodium and potassium are two minerals that form salts. Your question reminded me of a patient I took care of long ago, who also had a high blood pressure problem. I asked her to substitute potassium salt for the usual table salt (which contains sodium). I’ll tell you what happened later.

People with diets high in potassium have lower blood pressures than those with potassium-poor diets. Potassium dials down blood pressure, while sodium ratchets it up.

That is, provided there’s

Salt – sodium chloride – is essential for survival. Together with potassium, sodium helps balance fluid levels in our cells. But you only need a small amount of it. When you take in more sodium than your body needs, your body holds on to water to dilute the sodium. As a result, the amount of fluid in your blood vessels increases. That raises the pressure inside your blood vessels and makes the heart work harder.

Potassium helps the body

get rid of excess sodium and relaxes blood vessels. Both of these actions help lower blood pressure.

Thousands of years ago, when humans roamed the earth gathering and hunting, sodium was scarce. By contrast, potassium was abundant. The so-called Paleolithic diet provided about 16 times more potassium than sodium.

Today, the average American diet contains about twice as much sodium as potassium.

That’s in large part the result of the high levels of salt in processed foods. This sodium-potassium imbalance is thought to be a major contributor to high blood pressure.

Research suggests that reversing the imbalance between the two minerals can

help the heart and arteries. In one trial, researchers measured the amounts of sodium and potassium excreted over the course of 24 hours by nearly 3,000 volunteers. (The amount excreted is a good stand-in for the amount consumed.) The higher the ratio of sodium to potassium, the greater the chance of having a heart attack or stroke, needing bypass surgery or angioplasty, or dying of cardiovascular disease over 10 to 15 years of follow-up.

To reverse the ratio, choose foods with a high proportion of potassium to sodium. (On my website, askdoctork.com, I’ve put a table showing the potassium-to-sodium ratio of many common foods.) Potassium is found naturally in many

fruits and vegetables. Federal guidelines recommend 4,700 mg of potassium per day for adults.

Now, about the patient I advised to sprinkle potassium salt instead of ordinary (sodium-containing) table salt on her foods: At her next visit, her blood pressure still was high. She swore she was using the potassium salt. I was puzzled. As I was writing a prescription, she reached into her bag and started munching on a big salami and potato chips. She had been following the letter, but not the spirit, of my advice.
