MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee on Monday heard the findings of the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund audit dated April 29. Treasurer Lori Werden prepared a response to all nine findings, which she presented to the committee who decided to table the issue until Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland and his office could further review the laws involved.

“We’re going to have to do some research,” Helland said during the meeting. “We’ll do all the research, make some phone calls and draft a resolution.”

The resolution in question is in response to a finding regarding the number of hours elected board members put in on an annual basis. This issue was brought up in April when board members found out they may not be eligible for IMRF

“We inquired as to the estimated time that the Elected Officials spend on employer business. Based on the responses received, we were unable to determine that the above mentioned Elected Official met the county’s hourly standard requirement of 1,000 hours,” according to the audit findings.

Board Chairman David Welter recommended rescinding a 2002 resolution that allowed board members to receive the benefits. Committee Chairman John Galloway asked about the past years they have received the benefits and what it would mean for long-time board members.

Werden said her response would be to rescind the resolution April 29, the day the audit was performe,d and that they found out they should not be receiving the benefits.

Auditors with IMRF altogether had nine findings

against the county, some of which were easily resolved others that left more questions than answers.

Among these findings were issues with 2014 W-2 forms, including that two employees who may be working more than the 1,000 hourly standard, which requires enrollment in IMRF. Further review shows the same findings for the employees and therefore they may be eligible to apply for credit.

Also found, was that five employees received payments that were not reported as wages, the amounts ranged from $150 to $400. Werden has addressed these issues by changing internal processes so that no one is able to receive a 1099 if they are currently a county employee.

Under previous leadership, some employees received both W-2s as well as 1099s for contracted work.

They also found an independent contractor who works for the health department that doesn’t appear to have their

own trade or business. They said if her services are only being rendered to the county, than she should be an employee and should be enrolled in IMRF. Also addressed was six employees of the dispatch center who were previously deputized under former Sheriff Terry Marketti, who were again deputized in January 2013, but were not deputized by Sheriff Kevin Callahan. In order to participate in the Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Personnel plan they must be deputized. Werden said her office will change retroactively through the date Callahan was appointed, and make adjustments to reported wages and will refund the employee directly after receiving the credit through IMRF. Callahan said in a phone call after the meeting that he did not deputize the employees once he was elected because they were not under the control and direction of the sheriff’s office any longer.

MORRIS – When Alexander Lindemann walked into welding class at Grundy Area Vocational Center last year, he looked up at the wall of welding hoods representing former students who had placed at various competitions, and knew then he wanted his hood mounted there one day.

Lindemann, a Minooka Community High School senior, took part in several competitions this year including one in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he competed against more than 200 students from 17 states and most recently at SkillsUSA in Springfield on April 23. He took first place in both competitions.

“He put in a lot of time, a lot of work, to prepare,” said his teacher, Jim Cebulski. “He’s academically really smart and he’s good mechanically, as well. He listens to everything I say and does it with no questions asked.”

Lindemann didn’t always want to be a welder. He also looked at the criminal justice and automotive programs.

“I looked at criminal justice because I always wanted to be a police officer, but I also like

Jimmy Stafford, of Train, returns to Morris High School

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School has had professional athletes and successful military and business people as keynote speakers on Honors Recognition Night, District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said.

But Jimmy Stafford of the band Train is the first Grammy award-winning keynote speaker. As a 1982 graduate of Morris High School, Stafford returns Wednesday for the 32nd annual Honors Recognition Night. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and Halloran said in addition to Stafford’s speech, each of the 185 students honored will receive an autographed picture of Stafford with their proclamation.

“One indication of excitement about the ceremony is that our attendance is up,” Halloran said. “Nearly 500 people have responded that they’ll attend.”

Art teacher Chris Hankins and National Honors Society Adviser Barbara Rath were on staff when Stafford attended the high school, Halloran said, and Stafford requested the school invite former guidance

counselor Hank Trujillo, who will be in attendance.

Stafford moved to Hollywood in 1983, spent time with several bands until 1990, and released an album with The Apostles. After the band went their separate ways in 1992, Stafford did solo acoustic shows prior to beginning work with Train in 1994, according to a news release from the school.

Train has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards and was awarded three by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

It wasn’t the first time Halloran, who is a neighbor of Stafford’s cousin, tried to schedule Stafford as the school’s keynote speaker.

GOP caucus to be held for vacant Morris 2nd Ward alderman seat

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Party Central Committee has scheduled a caucus for Saturday to nominate a successor to fill the vacancy left by former Morris Second Ward Alderman Ken Sereno, who resigned last week.

“We’re looking for a Republican who resides in the city of Morris Ward Two, who will tell us why they’re a good candidate for the alderman nomination,” said Michael Mattingly, chairman of the Grundy County Republican Central Committee.

The party can make a recommendation, but the city is not mandated to appoint the party’s candidate.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said he will take all interested people into consideration, but said it’s not a partisan appointment. Sereno is a Republican, but the replacement is not required to be a Republican or of the party’s choosing.

“An interested person can be appointed regardless of

political affiliation or no affiliation at all, experience or not,” Kopczick said. “If they’re interested, they can come see me.”

The Republican Party’s caucus will consist of precinct committee men and women who represent the voting precincts located in the corporate limits of Morris. Qualified applicants will be invited to present before the committee, Mattingly said.

“The Grundy County Republican Central Committee congratulates Mr. Kenneth Sereno on his years of public service to the citizens of Morris,” a news release from the party states. “The local Republican Party was saddened to learn of Alderman Sereno’s resignation from office.”

Sereno served 34 years as an alderman.

“We’re hoping there will be several qualified persons who are knowledgeable about matters in the Second Ward,” Mattingly said.

MORRIS – Grundy County Treasurer Lori Werden has announced that 2014 real estate taxes have been mailed as of May 7 to 25,646 parcels.

The due dates for the two installments are June 8 and Sept. 8. Payments may be mailed directly to the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office at P.O. Box 689, Morris, IL 60450, and must be postmarked on or before the due date.

Payments may also be made at the various banks listed on the reverse side of the tax bill. Tax payments may

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 is asking for the community’s input on selecting its new superintendent.

Superintendent Al Gegenheimer is retiring a year ahead of schedule, with his contract ending June 5. The news has

caused the school board to launch a nationwide superintendent search for a replacement, hopefully finding a person with superintendent and school finance experience, as Gegenheimer performs both roles for the district now.

The board has hired consultant Dave Love, of the Illinois Association of School Boards, to aid in the search, offering

consulting, resume screening, job board advertising, interview assistance, survey and focus group arrangements to create a smooth hiring process. The board hopes to hire a superintendent by July.

Gegenheimer sent out an email Monday morning via Teacher Ease and messages via School Messenger, announcing a survey the board

would like those with children in Minooka 201 District and those in the Minooka community to read and fill out, concerning the desired qualities of a new superintendent.

This survey is open to anyone who resides in Minooka, and/or who has children in the district, since the district teaches children with Joliet, Shorewood and Channahon

addresses.

New voter registration cards have been mailed MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson announced that new voter registration cards have been mailed to all Grundy County registered voters.

By law, voter registration cards must be replaced every two years.

The new card replaces all previously issued cards and lists each voter’s current name, address, township, precinct, polling place and the units of government in which

he or she is entitled to vote, according to a news release from the clerk’s office. A recent polling place change in Garfield Township will be reflected on the voter registration cards for that precinct.

Voters are to review and sign the new card and destroy any old cards. Errors should be corrected and the card mailed back to the Grundy County Clerk’s Office immediately.

First Women’s Wellness Fair in Minooka

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – A Women’s Wellness Fair on Mother’s Day weekend was the perfect time to educate and support women.

That’s why Kristin Rhoads and Erin Kubinski planned the Women’s Wellness Fair, held Saturday at Minooka Village Hall. The inaugural event had about 100 women who registered prior to the event, as well as walk-in traffic.

Rhoads, owner of Nurture the Journey Wellness Studio in Minooka, said she had a vision for some time of creating this type of event.

“Our main customer base is women, and women tend to make more decisions financially these days,” Rhoads said. “We wanted to teach women about wellness, as well as showcasing small business owners and service products in the community in one place.”

“Prenatal massage helps the woman get ready for the birthing process. I can focus on the lower back and hips, to provide relief and relax muscles, potentially opening up

the hips, which makes birthing easier for the mom and baby.” Nicole said.

Alllergies interfere with lives of Grundy, Will residents

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Tyler Gundberg wants to be more athletic and spend more time outside.

But he can’t. And the Joliet resident blames allergies.

“I can’t breathe after running,” said Tyler, 14. “I can run for 45 seconds, maybe. I feel like I can’t catch my breath and my chest feels tight.”

Marie Larsen of Joliet, worship leader at Peace Chapel in Morris, said seasonal allergies interfere with her life, too. Flare-ups make Larson more prone to colds and coughs. More than once, Larson has found herself stepping away from the microphone at church to discreetly cough.

“They [allergies] make it hard to take a deep breath or sustain a note for any length of time,” Larsen said.

Bad year for seasonal allergies

Allergy season is in full bloom, said Dr. Hetal Amin, an allergist/immunologist with Morris Hospital Allergy Specialists. It’s particularly severe this year because of a late frost, a delayed spring and plenty of rain.

Typically tree season begins in March and tapers off in May, when grass season starts, Amin said. Tree season continues into July, with ragweed season starting in mid-August and continuing through September. When warm weather lingers, ragweed thrives longer than usual, Amin added.

Season overlap means patients with multiple allergies have more severe – as well as

persistent – symptoms, Amin said. The recent weather pattern of cold to warm to rainy to warmer created a perfect environment for pollen to grow and germinate, Amin said.

“It’s good for pollen,” Amin said, “not good for patients.”

The culprit making people miserable is histamine, a chemical that reacts to perceived intruders in the body with symptoms people experience as allergic reactions: itching and runny nose, itching and runny eyes, post-nasal drip, hives and bronchospasm, Amin said.

Treating seasonal allergies

If allergies are mild, staying inside when pollen counts are highest – typically mid-morning until late afternoon – and then rinsing one’s eyes, hair and skin when coming inside, might relieve symptoms, Amin said.

Running the air conditioner and using a furnace filter that traps pollen also helps, Amin added, as does keeping pets groomed and bathed.

Some people find relief with over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants or steroid nasal sprays.

Many of the newer antihistamines don’t cause drowsiness and last longer. Decongestants and steroid-based nasal sprays can unblock nasal passages, making breathing easier.

Nasal sprays can block pollen reactions, which may prevent skin reactions, Amin said.

Immunotherapy – commonly known as allergy shots – also can help reduce reactions, Amin said. Small allergen doses are injected under the skin so that, over time, the patient’s immunity to those allergens is increased.

Sublingual tablets – dissolved under one’s tongue – are available in low dosages for grass and ragweed, but not all insurance plans cover them, Amin said. They also

Tyler has gotten sick when the seasons changed since he was 2, Kelly said. He was tested for allergies at 3, and medication has not helped. Tyler has had tubes to treat frequent double ear infections. He also had his tonsils and adenoids removed.

Although Larsen was officially diagnosed with asthma at age 25 – after winding up in the emergency department while testing for a local fire department – Larsen said as a child she often coughed after gym class.

Seasonal allergies aren’t the only culprits. While caring for a vacationing friend’s cats, Larsen learned she had a cat allergy. Larsen also reacts to certain types of printing ink and stopped counting Sunday collections due to itching and her runny nose.

Larsen stopped working as a paramedic and firefighter when smoke became one of her asthma triggers. She now works inside for a Plainfield window and door company.

Still, Larsen often resorts to antihistamines, decongestants and her rescue inhaler.

“The allergies have gotten progressively worse about the last 12 years,” Larsen said.

Alexandre Lamfalussy, helped found euro, dies at 86 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FRANKFURT, Germany – Belgian economist Alexandre Lamfalussy, who headed the institution that became the European Central Bank and was credited as one of the founders of the shared euro currency, has died at age 86.

The ECB said in a statement Monday that “core building stones” of the shared currency were put in place under Lamfalussy’s stewardship. It called him “one of the euro’s founding fathers.”

Wilson, who lived in Branford with her sister, died Saturday at Yale-New Haven Hospital, actress Elizabeth Morton, a spokeswoman for the family, said Monday.

Wilson played Dustin Hoffman’s mother in “The Graduate” and the character Roz in “9 to 5.”

She had roles in almost 30 films, including “Catch-22” and “Regarding Henry,” and appeared in numerous stage and TV shows, playing Archie Bunker’s cousin on “All in the Family.”

Wilson won a Tony Award for her performance in 1972’s “Sticks and Bones.”

NEW YORK – Bernard Madoff’s former right-hand man, who once admitted he was loyal to his boss “to a terrible, terrible fault,” has died less than a month before he faced sentencing for his role in the multi-billion dollar fraud.

Frank DiPascali, 58, died Thursday of lung cancer after spending his final years cooperating with investigators.

DiPascali had been due to appear on June 5 in federal court in Manhattan, where he was expected to get credit for pleading guilty and agreeing to become a key government witness against his former co-workers.

“He was grateful to have been able to make some amends by helping the government these past few years,” his attorney, Marc Mukasey, said in a statement.

At his 2009 guily plea, DiPascali told a judge that account statements showing the firm was making trades for clients were “all fake,” something “I knew, Bernie Madoff knew and other people knew.”

About Madoff, he added: “I was loyal to him. I ended up being loyal to a terrible, terrible fault.”

Testifying four years later at the trial of five former Madoff employees, DiPascali described to a jury how he found Madoff in tears as the Ponzi

scheme was unraveling in late 2008.

“I’m at the end of my rope. I have no more money,” DiPascali quoted Madoff as saying.

When he asked his boss what he meant, he said he snapped, “I don’t have any more goddamned money!

Don’t you get it?”

The five defendants were convicted of charges they repeatedly lied to hide a fraud that enriched them and cheated investors – a renunciation of Madoff’s claim when he pleaded guilty to fraud charges in March 2009 that he acted alone.

Madoff, 77, is serving a 150year sentence at a federal lockup in North Carolina.

Abandoned home fire on Route 47 put out with no injuries The Lisbon Seward Fire Protection District fought a fire at an abandoned home on Route 47 just north of Sherrill Road about 4:30 p.m. Friday. Cebulski said the extra time in the shop is what is consistent with each year’s winners. GAVC student welders have taken first place each year for 10 consecutive years at SkillsUSA. As he nears his high school graduation, Lindemann knows he made the right decision in choosing welding.

“There’s nothing else I want to do now,” he said. “I am confident and I feel prepared.”

Lindemann has applied at Chicago Pipefitters Local 597; he passed the test to start his apprenticeship and he awaits the letter letting him know when he will start.

“I’m really happy, excited.

I look forward to going,” he said. “I feel GAVC prepared me and I’m thankful for this class.”

“GAVC pumps out really good kids,” said Adam Sutter, admissions director with the training center. “They are taught by one of our instructors, which gives them good experience.”

Sutter said anytime a high school-age student shows interest and participates in a welding class, whether at GAVC or another institution, they come in well-prepared for the program.

“It gives them a leg up,” he said. “There are a lot of different welding programs out there, all of them that are welding specific prepares them.”

He said it’s key to the union to find younger welders who are excited about it and show a desire to continue working as a welder.

Educators only look at education, the justice system only looks at legal matters, medical professionals worry only about issues relative to health and nonprofits only worry about the issues they support.

But that is changing.

Collective impact is a newer buzz word in the social service sector, but it’s not a new concept. Collective impact is simply a group of individuals who come together with a common agenda to solve a complex social issue.

Over the past several years, Grundy County organizations have come together to break

down those silos and to examine how specific issues could be impacted using collective impact or collaboration.

The Behavioral Health Alliance of Grundy County is a great example of a group of professionals working together to collaborate, advocate for behavioral health issues, and educate the community on behavioral health issues.

Two years ago, BHA changed their meeting format to allow for a presentation each month. The presentation topic varies each month as does the speaker.

Conducting our meetings in this fashion has been a great way to involve individuals from different sectors. BHA currently has participation from the following sectors: mental health, health, education, nonprofit, veterans, counseling, local government

and the faith community.

Although the group is currently comprised of professionals, we would welcome anyone who is interested in behavioral health issues to attend. So far this year, BHA has heard presentations on: stages of change, mental health court, dysfunctional parenting and mental health issues among alternative school students.

Upcoming meeting topics are as follows: stigma around mental health, emerging drugs, social host legislation, recovery support for people in treatment, homelessness, complex mental health issues, and psychiatric care for children and adolescents.

In addition to our monthly meetings, BHA typically holds at least one training per year and promotes countless other community events in an attempt keep the community

educated on behavioral health issues. In March, we hosted a workshop on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, which reached the maximum capacity for the workshop site.

The workshop was so popular that BHA is considering holding a series of DSM workshops so the presenter can really dive into the specifics of recent changes made to the DSM. BHA releases a monthly e-newsletter sent via email as well as posted on Facebook. which always contains a short article about that month’s topic as well as upcoming events.

Morris Hospital Yorkville Campus given award

YORKVILLE – The Morris Hospital Yorkville Campus was named New Business of the Year by the Yorkville Area Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 19 at the Chamber’s annual dinner.

There were 91 new businesses eligible for the award.

The New Business of the Year award is presented annually based on the impact that a new member has made for the betterment of the Chamber of Commerce and surrounding community, according to a news release from the hospital.

Forseeing, preparing for disasters The earthquake that devastated Nepal almost two weeks ago is a reminder that while natural disasters cannot be precisely predicted, they can be foreseen.

Similarly, we know that major earthquakes will hit California, that massive hurricanes will blow through Florida and the Gulf Coast, that huge tornadoes will rip through Oklahoma and Kansas and, yes, Minnesota will get killer blizzards. Every

place on the planet carries some sort of natural risk. The key is preparation. A quake there as powerful as the one that rocked Kathmandu last month might not turn St. Louis or Memphis to rubble, but it would certainly be damaging at the least. This nation does not lack for resources, but it has at times been lax in preparing for disasters that lie in the unknown future. New Orleans’ levees were poorly designed and ill-maintained,

and so the city was swamped

by Hurricane Katrina. An estimated third of the damage wrought in Miami-Dade County by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 could have been avoided had building codes been properly enforced. Americans are increasingly settling in areas vulnerable to wide-scale disasters. They need to be ready for those calamities when they arrive.

Local governments try to become less accountable to taxpayers As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to move beyond successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances.

At least you would think so given the seriousness of the fiscal crisis.

But that’s not the case with some elected officials and local government lobbyists that represent the more than 7,000 taxpayer funded units of government in Illinois.

Behind-the-scenes efforts currently are taking place that would reduce their obligation of accountability and transparency to taxpayers, all under the guise of the state’s financial crisis. It’s a “smokeand-mirrors” attempt by local governments at a time of fiscal crisis where Illinois taxpayers would end up on the losing end.

One successful compromise and proven solution that is now in its fifth year of operation is the PublicNoticeIllinois website, or www. publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI

AMENDMENT

is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government, and the Illinois court system.

It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. It’s an example of a proven, successful public-private partnership that already is saving taxpayers money and should be supported by elected officials at all levels of government.

Public notices, or legal notices as they are often referred to, are a fundamental component in the foundation of our democracy and of our legal system.

For more than 200 years, newspapers have been paid to print public notices and to serve as the critically important independent third-party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system.

Notice of publication in newspapers provides the proven and necessary verification, certification and archiving solution that ensure individuals and taxpayers rights are protected and preserved.

Frankly, it’s a process that has worked so well and for

GUEST VIEW Dennis DeRossett so long that those wanting to eliminate it or change to another process rarely consider the chaos and disruption to government bodies and to the court system that would take place without this proper verification, certification and archiving of public notices and notices of the courts.

PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly.

Yes, unanimously. Key components of the law called for the creation of a centralized website for public notices that would be managed by Illinois newspapers.

It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print.

All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website.

With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists – whose paychecks are

funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites.

These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across 7,000 websites doesn’t make sense. (Actually, it would be about 4,000 websites as many units of local government do not yet have a website.)

Such legislation was introduced and failed again earlier this session.

However, local government groups now are using behind the scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is this issue is not about money – it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers.

Every year Illinois citizens dutifully fulfill their obligation of paying many types and amounts of taxes to support these thousands of local government units throughout the state.

Each of these units has an annual operating budget that ranges from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of millions and even billions of dollars. Taxpayer dollars, that is.

It’s not at all about “saving the taxpayers money” because that has already been done successfully through the 2011 legislation and PNI. Local governments will still try to sell it that way, however.

Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep on working, and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

Late runs lead Morris to win over Yorkville “When we came in to hit in the sixth, I thought it would be nice to get a couple more runs. It gives you a bigger margin of error in the seventh.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When a high school baseball team is at home and already has the lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the ideal situation is for that team to score a run or two just to extend the lead a bit heading into the seventh.

Morris did just that Monday afternoon, tacking three runs onto a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth to hold a 6-1 advantage going into the seventh.

As it turned out, that lead was useful when Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Yorkville scored twice in the top of the seventh before Cody Niewinski finished off his complete game in a 6-3 Redskins win.

“In hindsight, obviously those runs were huge,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “Every run in a baseball game is a big run. That’s why, when we were up 6-1, we were still trying to put the ball in play and make things happen. We had a lot of things be successful today

For Niewinski, who allowed just five hits and struck out six, the runs gave him a little more breathing room.

“It felt good to see the offense going like that,” he said.

“When we came in to hit in the sixth, I thought it would be nice to get a couple more runs.

It gives you a bigger margin of error in the seventh.”

Yorkville touched Niewinski for an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but the Redskin defense helped him get out of the inning without further harm. With one out, the bases loaded and a run already home, Yorkville’s Luc Ferran grounded a ball to first. Mor-

ris’ Chase Hansen threw home to force the runner from third and, when the runner from second rounded third and slipped, catcher Tyler Bordner threw him out for a double play.

Morris (15-12-1, 5-5) answered quickly and with authority.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Tom Cheshareck slammed a solo homer into the trees beyond the center-field fence to tie the game and fuel the Redskins’ fire.

“That was a big, ‘We can do

this’ moment,” Niewinski said about Cheshareck’s homer. “It lit a fire under us.”

Kein was also glad to see it.

“Chez’s homer got us going,” he said. “We aren’t a big home run hitting team, so when we get one, we’d like to use it. As a coach, you’d like to think that would light a fire under your team, and it did.

“I am just so darn proud of these kids. They’ve had multiple opportunities to maybe not give everything they have, but this team isn’t like that. They always give everything they’ve got.”

Niewinski went out and retired the Foxes in order in the top of the fifth, getting the firedup Redskins right back in the dugout.

“I was pretty jacked up after that home run,” Niewinski said. “I was just trying to get outs.”

The Redskins rewarded their pitcher with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Saratoga is going to miss one special lady from its roster For a lot of parents, the physical connection to a school or an athletic department ends with graduation. Sure, they may show up to a game every now and then decked in school colors and they may even cut a check from time to time, but the time and the commitment level involved traditionally subsides and it happens abruptly.

I graduated from Saratoga in 2003, and, for all intents and purposes, that could have been the end of my mom’s involvement in Saratoga athletics.

Instead, it was barely even the beginning. Donna Knudson (the artist formerly known as Donna Enger) has never been one to shy away from her children’s interests. Whatever my brother and sister (Jade and Brandie Weppler) and I decided we wanted to do, she pushed us to do and to do to the utmost of our abilities, and she was always involved.

That’s come with its fair share of embarrassing moments – she’s run out onto a

court or a field when one of us has been injured on multiple occasions – but for the most part it’s always been a blessing to have the mother who’d drive you anywhere just to play a game.

By the time I graduated from Morris Community High School in 2007, we all sort of wondered what she’d do Donna with herself.

Knudson She’d spent the better part of three decades at some game somewhere and, without a kid to watch, we worried she’d become restless. We should have known better.

My mom’s been driving buses for close to 30 years, as well, and since the early 2000s she’s worked at Saratoga as both a bus driver and a lunch lady, taking just about every trip available. When I was in school there, she was extremely active in the booster club, and after I graduated it became natural

VIEWS Ryan Wooden for her to devote the extra time and attention to a school she’d fallen in love with.

Times got hard in the first couple years after I graduated, and with the economy crashing extracurricular activities often found themselves on the chopping block, but when things got roughest my mom was there to fight and claw for every available dollar to help keep sports and activities alive at Saratoga.

When I came home from college, it became pretty routine to get suckered into spending a Wednesday evening helping distribute Market Days. Every year, the pre-holiday pie sales drove a lot of money into the Saratoga booster club and I can’t even begin to explain how many unclaimed pies my mom would pay for and stash in our freezer. When things

got hard for members of the Saratoga family, she’d help the only way she knew how, by putting on a fundraiser and eliciting the support of a strong community. When Saratoga math teacher Ron Cinto lost his house to a fire, my mom put on an alumni basketball game that was wildly successful, drew a huge crowd and raised a lot of money to help recoup some of the losses. She put thousands of hours into meetings and bookkeeping and the actual events themselves and often did so without much recognition.

However, that’s not to say she went unnoticed.

Find a teacher who has volunteered their time as a coach at Saratoga and ask them about Ms. Donna and it’ll surely bring out a smile. They’ll tell you about how fiercely devoted she can be and what a pain it can be to wind up on the opposite side of an argument with her, but they’re most likely to focus on how she put that to use by running through walls to help fund Saratoga athletics.

At the end of this school year, Donna Knudson is retiring from Saratoga and packing up for Florida. My brother, his wife and their three kids live down there, and she’s hanging up all the proverbial hats that encompass Ms. Donna (booster club president, bus driver, lunch lady, principle fundraiser and No. 1 fan) to become Grandma Donna.

People have gone out of their way to show their appreciation this year. She’s been honored at awards banquets and got her own state medal and game ball when the eighth grade baseball team made their run in state this year.

She cried tears of joy virtually every time. But now as she enters the retirement phase of her life, I occasionally drift into thought about how she’ll keep herself occupied. I quickly snap to and realize that I already know the answer.

She’s gonna find a bus to drive and a school to love, and it will instantly become a better place because of it.

I am, however, struggling with pressure from my ex to get back together. He had several affairs during the 13 years we were married. The pain and self-loathing were unbearable for me. Explain that you tried forgiving him, and it only caused you more heartache. Tell your son you love him and you’re sorry he’s angry at you, but it’s clear that his father isn’t going to change. And that you would rather remain single than let him touch your body – or your heart – again.

If you do, it may teach Jackson that not all women

Dear Abby: I live in my parents’ home. They are long-haul truck drivers and come home every eight weeks or so for a few days. I’m disabled and have a caregiver who comes four days a week.

When my parents stop in and the caregiver is here, they expect her to do for them. They keep four dogs on the truck they take with them and leave four dogs at home with me – so that’s eight dogs when they are here. I am extremely grateful for this home and I love them very much, but right now I feel like a house/dog-sitter.

My son has invited me to go on vacation with his family. Is it my responsibility to make arrangements for the dogs they have left here? I feel like a prisoner in my own home. –
