Candidate’s name not released yet

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Members of the Grundy County Personnel Committee met in a special meeting Thursday to decide which administrator candidate they would be sending in front of the entire county board for a vote.

Soon after the meeting started, members adjourned to executive session to discuss the two candidates who interviewed for the position two weeks ago.

“We will sit and negotiate with the candidate and if all goes well, we will bring it to

the full board in two weeks,” Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said.

County Board Chairman David Welter said a name would not be released until the full County Board vote at the request of the candidate, who was interviewed for several hours.

The personnel committee voted three to one in favor of negotiating a contract with the candidate discussed in executive session.

Board members Geiger, David Nelson and Ann Gill voted in favor. Board member Millie Dyer voted against negotiating the contract.

Iverson said he felt comfortable with Williams-Manny Insurance group and moved to vote a positive recommendation for a two-year contract with a 3 percent cap for increase and a 60-day right to terminate by either side clause.

The full board is expected to vote on the insurance group at the next regular meeting in two weeks.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – A baby calf laid in the corner of the milking barn at Halpin’s Dairy Farm on Thursday, blissfully unaware that most of the children filing in and out had never seen her kind up close before.

“Oh, look at the baby,” said Sofia Best, 10, who attends White Oak Elementary School in Morris. “How old do you think it is?”

As she exited the barn she learned from owner Scott Halpin that the baby that caught her attention was just a few days old. She followed her teacher and classmates to another area of the farm, where more baby animals awaited.

“Seeing the calves and petting them, and having them suck on your fingers is the best,” she said. “I haven’t been to a farm before. I just saw animals at Corn Festival. This is really neat.”

The Halpin family has been welcoming children to their farm for decades.

“My dad and grandfather used to have the kids out here.

I remember when I was a kid,” he said. “It’s important that kids come and find out where their food comes from.”

He said on the day they are touring the farm it’s hectic and hard to remember what

I remember coming to your farm in fourth grade.”

“My dad always told me the kids would remember the visit for years. I guess it’s true,” Halpin said.

As Halpin took students from Braceville Elementary School, South Wilmington Elementary School and White Oak Elementary School through the family barn, he

showed them where the milk starts out. “You may get some of our milk at school if you have Prairie Farms,” he said.

“Milk from our cows also goes to Joliet to be made into mozzarella and ricotta cheese.”

As they passed through the doors after learning about the holding tank, they got to meet Milli the cow, who was ready to be milked.

Students got to feel the suction from the milking machine on their fingers before Milli was cleaned and milked.

what they learned in the classroom and shows them the real-life application, said Tasha Bunting, manager of the Grundy County Farm Bureau.

“They get to get up-close and personal with agriculture,” Bunting said.

Bunting said 125 students visited the farm Thursday

with more schools coming out on another three dates so they would each get a chance to have the hands-on experience.

At other stations throughout the farm, the children were able to climb into a tractor, shake a jar until its contents became butter, and view a video followed by a cup of ice cream.

“It’s always a memorable day,” Bunting said. “Kids remember the ice cream and the butter, and stepping up into a tractor and seeing the view from the seat.”

Avery Williams, 10, with Braceville Elementary School, said all of it was awesome.

“I learned they switch straw every day so it stays clean,” she said.

Halpin’s wife, Sarah Halpin, said so many of the young visitors have no idea where their food comes from, other than the grocery store.

“It’s sad. We live in a rural area, and they have no idea,” she said.

The Halpins said they will continue to welcome the kids so they can continue to help teach the importance of agriculture.

Zoning board OKs change to North Street property

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A property on North Street is one step closer to being a multi-family residence.

The Morris City Council conditionally approved April 6 a request for a zoning change, returning the house used for multiple businesses back to residential use. The approval was pending the Morris Zoning Board of Appeals action, which took place Wednesday.

The zoning board approved two variances for the former chiropractic office, which was converted by a previous owner to seven apartment units without the city’s knowledge.

The zoning map amendment for the building at 115 E. North St. takes it from Business-2 zoning to Residential-4 for multifamily housing.

With a 7-0 vote, the first variance allows for seven parking spaces instead of 14.

Two spaces are typically required per unit.

The property has a garage near collapse and a small space, allowing for two or three cars. Current owner Les Peterson intends to tear down the garage, and then pave eight parking stalls. The eighth may be used for a large garbage drop for tenants, he said.

The second variance, to accommodate the apartment sizes, also was approved 7-0.

City code requires 750 square feet per one-bedroom residence. Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said that requirement was created with new construction in mind, such as the apartments on Twilight Drive. Many one-bedroom apartments in Morris are smaller than 750

feet, he said. Assistant City Attorney Brad Nolden pointed out to the board the smallest unit in Peterson’s building is 383 square feet and required almost a 50 percent variance.

The seven variances will be calculated to the exact square footage per unit.

Cheshareck said previously the neighboring apartment buildings were grandfathered in and thus have no parking requirement. Those residents often use street parking.

D-201 board OKs full-day kindergarten details

The much-anticipated voting on the full-day kindergarten and fine arts debate concluded, and the board unanimously approved the hiring of four new fine arts teachers – which means the kindergarten will have a full seven-hour day. The students will have two 25-minute fine arts periods per day, as well as recess, lunch and core classes. With this new schedule, the student fees had to be revisited and changed to accommodate those signing up for full-day kindergarten.

“If parents wish to register for half-day kindergarten, the fees are $105, and after July 1, they move to $122. If the parents are registering for full-day kindergarten, the fees are $150, or $154 after July 1,” Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.

MINOOKA – Looking toward the future could best sum up the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Board of Education’s meeting Wednesday.

The board said goodbye to member Kevin Hannon and swore in two new board members, as well as two re-elected members. Hannon did not run for another term.

Ed Cronin and Kurt Jebens are new to the board, while John Clucas and Al Skwarczynski were elected for another term. Current board president Jim Satorius kept his seat, and Skwarczynski kept his secretary title, while Clucas moved into the vice president role once held by member Doug Martin. Martin did not re-run New superintendent search for the vice president position.

Former superintendent remembered

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The past and future came together Wednesday, as two new members were sworn onto the Channahon School District 17 Board and a moment of silence was observed for a former superintendent.

The passing of Norval B. Galloway was announced at the beginning of Wednesday’s meeting.

Galloway was appointed district superintendent in 1954 and served until his retirement in 1983. N.B. Galloway Grade School was dedicated to him in 1976.

“What a mark he made on education for many, many years,” Superintendent Karin Evans said.

Galloway often visited the schools after he retired, Evans said, and was proud of the district.

Dee Foreman and Mistey Kosek took the seats of George McCoy and Jim Bogacz. Neither McCoy nor Bogacz sought re-election.

Julie Bankes, who was re-elected, also was sworn into office. The board and administrators thanked McCoy and Bogacz for their service as they stepped down.

“We so appreciate your tenure, what you have done for the district and for the community,” Evans said. “This district is better because of the two of you.”

McCoy was on the school board for 12 years, Bogacz for 10.

Fire crews monitor Thursday’s Channahon brush fire

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A brush truck remained Thursday afternoon on the scene of a brush fire near Bluff Road and Southeast Frontage Road to ensure it was no longer a danger.

Crews attempted to extinguish the fire Thursday, but because of difficult marshy terrain and access to the fire, firefighters determined it would be unsafe to continue, Channahon Fire Protection District Chief John Petrakis said.

The fire was near a pond and a creek, Petrakis said. The fire also was down in a ravine, and was contained to that area.

Crews decided to let the fire burn itself out rather than expose firefighters to potential danger, Petrakis said.

A brush truck responding to the fire got stuck while attempting to reach the fire, Petrakis said, but it was recovered. Crews decided to let the fire burn out after consulting with the fire department with ExxonMobil, which owns the land.

The fire’s cause remained under investigation Thursday and likely would for a long time, Petrakis said.

Born May 17, 1937 in Morris, he was the son of Lowell and Luella(Anderson)Thompson. He received his education in the schools of Morris and attended Morris High School.

He was a lifetime resident of Morris and married Beverly Jean Hogue

on June 2, 1956 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

He was employed for 31 years at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Beverly; his children, Lorraine(Charles) Bieber of Oswego, Duane Lee (Diana) Thompson of Mazon, Dennis (Karen) Thompson of Walnut, Rosemary (Michael) Staszak of Darien, Peggy Sempert of Morris and Steven Thompson of Rantoul; dear grandfather of twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Zweeres of Morris; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Don Thompson.

Duane was an avid sports fan cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Indianapolis Colts.

“We were able to put water on it at certain points,” Petrakis said. “When we couldn’t, we didn’t. We didn’t want to put those guys in any harm’s way.”

Coal City and Wilmington supplied ATVs with fire suppression capabilities to try to reach the fire.

Crews returned to quarters from the scene shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday.

Ex-Auschwitz prisoner, barber to camp commander, dies at 95

By VANESSA GERA The Associated Press WARSAW, Poland – Jozef Paczynski, a Polish political prisoner at Auschwitz who became the personal barber to camp commander Rudolf Hoess, has died. He was 95.

For much of World War II, Paczynski was led to Hoess’ home and ordered to cut the hair of one of the worst mass Jozef murderers in Paczynski history.

For decades afterward he was repeatedly asked why he didn’t use his sharp tools to slit the throat of the man responsible for over a million deaths at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most notorious of the Nazi death camps. His answer: It would not have stopped the killing, but would have meant certain death for himself and many others.

“I thought about it,” Paczynski said in a speech in January in Krakow. “But when I realized what the con-

sequences would be I simply could not do it.”

Paczynski died Sunday in Krakow, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum said Thursday. Officials didn’t say what the cause of death was.

Paczynski was imprisoned at Auschwitz in June 1940 as punishment for trying to flee German-occupied Poland to join the Polish army in France. He was arrested after crossing into Slovakia and was taken in the first transport to Auschwitz, becoming prisoner number 121.

At the camp he was assigned to work in a barber shop where the SS men got their haircuts. One day Hoess showed up and singled out Paczynski from other barbers to come to his family home at the edge of the camp to trim his hair.

Paczynski recalled in a lecture in Krakow earlier this year that he was terrified when he was brought to cut Hoess’s hair.

“My voice was shaking, my hands were shaking and my legs were shaking,” he said.

Yet Hoess was apparently satisfied and had Paczynski return over and over, although he never said a word to him.

Paczynski, who remained at Auschwitz until Jan. 18, 1945, was one of the prisoners who survived there the longest. He was among a group that the Nazis moved out just days before the Soviet army liberated the camp and was later freed by U.S. soldiers in Germany.

Paczynski said he never witnessed any brutality by Hoess, who developed and oversaw the implementation of gas chambers where over a million Jews and others were murdered. Hoess was tried

by Polish authorities after the war and was sentenced to death by hanging in 1947. The sentence was carried out at Auschwitz next to a crematorium. After the war, Paczynski became a mechanical engineer and an educator. In 2001 he was honored with the Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland.

No information was immediately available about funeral arrangements.

BRIEFS DWIGHT – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Thursday that construction is set to start Monday at the Interstate 55 interchanges of Routes 47 and 17 near Dwight.

Two projects, totalling $540,941 have been awarded to “D” Construction of Coal City.

The projects consist of pavement removal and replacement at the tops of all ramps at the Route 17 interchange, and the tops of exit ramps at the Route 47 interchange, according to a news release from IDOT. The political career of Dan Walker SPRINGFIELD – Dan Walker, a man who served one term as Illinois’ governor and a second as federal inmate, died Wednesday in California, where he was serving a self-imposed exile from the state he once led.

He became governor in 1973 by defeating two Illinois political icons.

First he beat then-Lt. Gov. Paul Simon in the Democratic primary and next Gov. Richard Ogilvie in the general election.

Ogilvie was damaged politically by helping create Illinois’ first income tax.

“I supported the income tax. I thought it was a good idea. I made a point of congratulating Ogilvie on it over and over again – perhaps a bit maliciously,” Walker told me in a 2002 interview.

It was vintage Walker, a man who never walked away from a political brawl but lost far more than he won.

His time as governor was marred by a contentious relationship with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and both Democratic and Republican legislative leaders.

During his time in office, the most significant legislation he signed was the act creating the Illinois Lottery.

But he was largely ambivalent about this milestone, saying, “I don’t consider it my biggest regret. It was going to become law anyway. The Legislature would have overridden my veto.”

The advent of the lottery led the way for casino gambling to come to the Land of Lincoln, something Walker considered to be a negative consequence.

In 1987, Walker was convicted of bank fraud, misapplication of bank funds and perjury and served 18 months of a seven-year sentence. The

VIEWS Scott Reeder conviction was not related to his time as governor. He was released from prison in 1989 because of health concerns.

He first worked as an assistant to the prison chaplain, but that ended when a new warden was assigned to the Duluth, Minnesota, prison and handed him a 3-foot stick with a nail on the end. “‘You’re fired from your cushy chapel job,” Walker recalled the warden saying.

“Using that stick you’ll pick up all the cigarette butts and put them in a tin can you’ll carry. I don’t give a damn if the temperature outside is below zero. It’s your shtick and your stick, Walker.’”

Burned into the wood were the words: “Governor’s stick.”

“I’m going to tell all of the visitors, ‘Look at that guy, he’s a former governor,’ ” Walker recalled the warden saying.

Walker years earlier had braved the elements to become governor. On the shores of the Ohio River, he began what was perhaps his most audacious move — a walk from the Kentucky border to Chicago – 1,197 miles.

The 115-day trek captured the imagination of the public in the era of hippies, anti-war demonstrations and bell-bottom jeans. Four years later bumper stickers were printed that asked: “He can walk the state, but can he run it?”

5 months not enough for ex-Rep. Federal prosecutors asked for four years in prison. Former state Rep. Derrick Smith got five months.

He got off too easy. Smith was convicted of pocketing a bribe of $7,000, and maybe crooked pols would consider that chump change.

But Smith’s crime can’t be measured by how many digits fall to the left of the decimal point. Smith traded his public position – a priceless commodity – for personal gain.

Smith had been in the General Assembly for barely a year when he agreed to help a day care center get a state grant in return for the bribe. The business was a fake; the middleman was an FBI informant.

Smith insisted on being paid in cash, spoke in code and switched phones to close the deal. Open and shut.

“He extorted this money because he could, and pocketed it because he thought no one would ever know,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Marsha McClellan wrote in a sentencing memo. It took more than three years from arrest to sentencing, and Smith still denies wrongdoing.

Somehow we don’t think the five-month sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman will change that.

by Smith,” whose failure to see the error of his ways suggests he would make the same choices “if faced with future opportunities to advance his own interests illegally.”

And she wanted it to promote respect for the law.

Morris strong in all phases over Yorkville

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In landslide softball games, it’s hard to think that a defensive play in the second inning makes much of a difference.

However, that was exactly the case Thursday in Morris’ 10-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win over Yorkville.

With a strong wind blowing in from left field, runs looked like they might go for a premium early on. Both teams scratched out an unearned run in the first, and Yorkville had a runner on second with two outs in the second. Renee Packer sent a grounder up the middle that looked destined for center field and a 2-1 Yorkville lead. Morris shortstop Janelle Brehm ranged far to her left, however, and dove to keep the ball in the infield, keeping runners at first and third. Morris pitcher Abby Burns retired the next hitter on a popup to Brehm and the score remained tied.

Morris went on to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Leah Lines singled, was bunted to second

by Burns, went to third on a grounder by Melissa Benson and scored on a wild pitch.

“That play in the second inning was a difference-maker,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said.

“It kept them from scoring in that inning and kept the game tied. We needed that because, early on, we were a little flat at the plate.”

Burns continued to mow down hitters for the Redskins (16-6, 3-2) as the offense piled on the runs. After a scoreless third, Morris scored three in the fourth on a two-run single by Melissa Benson and an RBI single by Ryan Friend. In the fifth, Ashley Phelps delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Jasmine Cook before Burns reached on an error that scored Emily Moore to make it 7-1.

With one out in the sixth, Brehm singled, then reached second on an error on a hit by Cook. Moore then hit double to left-center that scored both Brehm and Cook. Moore stole third, and then the throw went

The first batter of the game for Yorkville reached base and came around to score, but she was the only Fox to cross the plate. Burns finished by allowing only five hits and struck

out six against just one walk.

“Abby is really starting to find her groove,” Lowery said.

“Her pitches are really moving a lot and she is throwing them for strikes. She has really limited her walks and hit by pitches and letting the defense make plays. She’s putting the ball over the plate, but not in places where the other team can hit it hard.

“After a time or two through the lineup, we started figuring the pitcher out and got some hits strung together.

Before that, we did a good job a couple times of getting a runner on, moving her over and getting her in. The last two games have been like that. You practice it hundreds of times, but it’s always good when you can come out and execute the way the girls did today.”

STAFF REPORTS DEKALB – After winning the first two games of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East baseball series against DeKalb on Monday and Tuesday, the Morris baseball team wanted nothing more than to complete the sweep Thursday.

The Redskins scored three runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth to claim a 7-4 victory. Morris (12-10-1, 4-5) collected 14 hits, led by Matt Walker, who was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Jake McDonald (2 RBIs), Tom Cheshareck (double, RBI), Chase Hansen (RBI) and winning pitcher Cody Niewinski (RBI) all had two hits.

“It was nice to come out and finish the series the way we wanted,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “We swung the bats pretty well, had some key hits, and Cody held his own on the mound.”

On the mound, Niewinski went the distance, striking out nine and walking one.

Morris visits Oswego today at 4:30.

Combine in Coal City: WCL Sports Management will be hosting a basketball showcase Saturday and Sunday at Coal City High School. The combine is open to the public and will start at noon on both days. Cost for admission is $5 per day. The event will feature college basketball men and women participating in a camp/combine to showcase their skills. Day 1 will consist of individual skill drills, where players will show their talent shooting, scoring and defending. They will also go through athleticism testing such as sprints, box drills and vertial jump. Day 2 will consist of a full day of 5 on 5 games.

Fishing passion starts in the tackle box; pass it on One afternoon this week, I had the pleasure of talking with a couple of other guys about the outdoors. We covered the full gamut of topics from deer hunting, turkey hunting, fishing, hunting dogs, coyotes, small game hunting, taking outdoors trips across the country, and so on. You name it, we talked about it.

Then the conversation took an interesting twist. Not for long, but just enough to spark my memory. One of the dads talked about how all of his fishing tackle mysteriously ends up in his son’s tackle box. We all had a good laugh and shared similar stories. On the way home, I got to thinking how critically important that seemingly unimportant ritual is.

To us, as the adult, its nothing. Maybe even sometime we might classify as an annoyance if our favorite lure is gone.

But take a step back, flash to your own childhood, and think about what that tackle box represents to a kid.

I remember watching my own dad open his bifold Plano box. He would carefully unlatch the top, place one hand on each side of the plastic lids, and pull it outward. Almost magically, tray after tray of lures unfolded right before my eyes.

Watching a tackle box peel open has the same enchanting effect of thrashing through wrapping paper on Christmas morning. You can’t help but sport wide eyes and smile.

After the initial shock and awe passed, I vividly remember thinking I never will have that much stuff. Little does a child realize that the tackle box before them had been carefully crafted and filled over a lifetime. The next striking memory is the plethora of colors and

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers shapes. I remember my brain not being able to process what my eyes saw. They darted from one tray to the next, quickly, trying to absorb everything.

What is that for? What does that one do? Why is that one orange? What do you call that?

And then the granddaddy of all thoughts. The one thought that you are scared to ask, but you have to. “Dad, can I have one?”

When a father or grandfather lets his child choose a lure from that mystical place where fishing originates, something special happens. A burning desire to use that lure ignites. A passion to head to the lake and fish for the one fish that will be the focal point of many a story

throughout a lifetime. There is no price you can put on that.

No matter the worth of the lure, isn’t a child’s love for the outdoors a greater accomplishment? Of course, I’m assuming if you have some high-dollar heirloom it’s not in your tackle box but on display in your house. My dad had an old fishing buddy who used to allow me to come with sometimes.

These days were the highlights of my childhood.

Going fishing with Dad and Gordy meant you had arrived as a man. Many times, right before we left Gordy’s house, he would pull down a tackle box and let me choose a lure for the night. If you think choosing the right candy from a box of assorted chocolates is a daunting task, you can only imagine the difficulty of such an important situation. This is fishing.

Depending on the lure that

the child selects, it opens up the opportunity for a wonderful teaching moment. Maybe the bait they picked needs a special type of retrieve. Maybe it is only fished in certain areas or times of year. The possibilities are almost endless. Done properly, this seemingly little thing can turn into a snapshot the child will always cherish.

Someday, when we are long gone, there is a possibility that your child might just let his or her grandkid let them select the same treasured symbol of time together. I still have those lures that my father and Gordy let me select. My two boys have even asked me about them as they perused my assortment of baits. Pass it on. You’ll be glad you did.

Too true – so in today’s deal, have a determined effort to see the winning play. South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king. What should East discard?

North’s three-spade rebid was aggressive. His heart honors were surely worthless, and his partner denied positive values when he failed to jump to two spades. But South, once invited, had no hesitation in bidding game.

This deal occurred during a North American Mixed Pairs Championship in the 1950s. East was Helen Sobel.

She realized that her husband had to have club values. So she “discarded” a spade at trick two and shifted to a club, giving her side the first four tricks.

Since this deal happened so long ago, West had actually led the heart king and continued with his ace. After the deal, Al Sobel said, “Thank you for ruffing my ace, partner.” Note that if East does discard, say, a club at trick two, declarer with careful play can take 10 tricks: five spades, three diamonds and two heart ruffs in the dummy.
