An educational decade in review MORRIS – When I was a little girl, my mom taught me to leave a place better than I found it. I can honestly say Morris Elementary School District is in better shape today than the condition it was when I became involved a decade ago.

District 54 was on Illinois’ financial watch list of schools teetering on the brink of collapse. Another year with a slide in the wrong direction and the state may have taken control. Morris Elementary may have been shut down, teachers let go and students bused to Minooka, Channahon or Joliet.

There wasn’t a more stressful time in the history of Morris to become involved in public education. Board meetings were stressful. Blame was thrown in all directions.

Tensions and tempers got high and heated.

I was asked in 2004 to sit on a citizen’s committee to help develop recommendations for the board to consider with the

In 2005 I was encouraged to run for the board. By 2007 I was board president and we were on our third superintendent in as many years.

In 2007, our new team began to work out of the huge hole our district was in. We returned the school day back to its normal dismissal time.

We found having full-day kindergarten provided more funding than only a half-day.

Kindergarten was back.

It was not difficult for our team to find a balance between budget, forecast and plan. We swiftly added the fine arts programs back into the curriculum. Using sound budgeting and forecasting, coupled with utilizing cost-containment strategies

and negotiating some revenue increases, District 54 was off the financial blacklist and heading in the right financial direction.

Restructuring the bond portfolio was an instrumental move. A massive bond deal struck by a prior administration was not in the best interest of the school, employees or taxpayers. We restructured and refunded a portion of these bonds with a more fair and common result to all parties.

The decentralization of our Special Education Services was another innovative issue.

The creation of the Shared Services Committee and the resulting agreements with both Morris High and Saratoga resulted in large savings.

Using the talents, knowledge and skills of our employees has saved tens of thousands of dollars. Our shared busing agreement may have had a rocky first day, but has saved taxpayers well into seven figures.

I didn’t know if there would ever be a time when District 54 wasn’t embroiled in a lawsuit over the construction and assessment of White Oak, which went on for 15 years. Finally, all litigation has been settled and ended.

Today, we are in the first year of a two-year rollout of a 1:1 technology initiative that will put laptops in the hands of every student in third through eighth grade, among other technology upgrades.

Through the utilization of survey data, we know our teachers are proud to work for the district and optimistic about our future together. Our parents believe 54 promotes academic success and has adults who care about kids.

Our students are happy and respect their teachers.

Some people will never get over how I got my job.

New vendors showcase items at 3 French Hens market

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Damp grass and a little bit of mud from the previous night’s rainstorm didn’t stop shoppers Saturday at the 3 French Hens French Country Market along the I&M Canal in Morris.

At least 140 vendors from across the Midwest – a market record, said co-organizer Monica Spence-Vogel – set up at Canal Port Park early Saturday.

Shoppers went from tent to tent searching for items such as vintage jewelry, metal art, baked goods, gourmet cheeses and fresh flowers.

“I think people decided to stick around once they noticed the weather was going to stay nice,” Spence-Vogel said. “We have a nice group from all over. I spoke to people from St. Louis, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin.”

The market has been featured in “Romantic Homes” magazine and “Midwest Living,” among others, and continues to grow in popularity.

GAVC holds first awards ceremony

By JEANNE MILLAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – The inaugural Grundy Area Vocational Center Awards Ceremony proceeded without a hitch last week.

In previous years, the center handed out its awards and scholarships at the awards nights of each of the four high schools GAVC students attend – Morris Community High School, Minooka Community High School, Coal City High School and Gardner-South Wilmington High School.

This year, all students being honored were together in the auditorium of Morris High School.

“We were very excited about the ceremony,” GAVC Director Lance Copes said, “and we had a tremendous

turnout of students and their families. We really didn’t know what to expect, it being our first year.”

Copes said the center held its ceremony so all students being honored were in one place at one time. It made the recognition a little more special, he said, and allowed teachers, staff and administrators to all be present.

Some of the high schools also will continue to recognize the GAVC students in their own ceremonies, Copes added.

The director said he was proud of the students honored for their achievements Thursday and also of all of the center’s students.

“When we look at our future workforce,” he said, “these students are going to industry leaders. They have very bright futures ahead of them.”

The Dave Potts Memorial Scholarship went to senior Lauren Daniels at the Grundy Area Vocational Center Awards Ceremony held Thursday.

In all, 170 awards and recognitions were given at the event, plus scholarships totaling more than $10,000. The

awards included Directors’ Awards, Keytrain Awards, Program Awards, School to Apprenticeship Awards, Competition Awards and Perfect Attendance Awards.

The Dave Potts Memorial Scholarship went to Gardner-South Wilmington senior Lauren Daniels, who excelled in the center’s Computer Maintenance Technology classes.

“I love computers,” Daniels said after the ceremony. “I’ve always loved working with them.”

She plans on attending Joliet Junior College next year to get her degree in an IT field, she said.

Friends Ryan Kowalczyk and Victor Toussaint, both Morris seniors, were two who were awarded Directors’ Awards for Fire Science.

“It’s a brotherhood,” Kow-

alczyk said. “It’s a lot of work, but you’re doing what you love to do. Getting in the gear and doing what you’re aspiring to be is what makes it fun.”

“It is like a family,” Toussaint said. “I wanted to be a firefighter even before the program. I think it’s a way to give back to your community and do a public service.”

Other honors bestowed at the event included Fire Science Outstanding Student Award, awarded to Morris senior Samantha Limbach, and Tradesman of the Year, awarded to Noah Rosak, of Minooka Community High School.

Given scholarships were Lauren Daniels, Brooke Baudino, Jordyn Bell, Natalie Wold, Alicia Headrick, Trevor McDaniel, Deja Carter, Devin Ryan, Erica Caher and Trevor McDaniel.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Administration building has gotten its new generator running after a back-up generator last September stopped working.

The generator powers county infrastructure in the event of an outage. Without a back-up generator for power, $400,000 worth of health department vaccines, the county’s IT servers, the county morgue and the Grundy County Emergency Operation Center are at risk.

“A test was performed on Friday and everything is up and running,” Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said Saturday. “It’s important to make sure there is no down time in the infrastructure.”

On April 23, a temporary generator was delivered to the building and hooked up.

On April 24, the county had ComEd disconnect commercial power, turning off all power to the facility so the rental generator could be

started safely. This was necessary to install the new, permanent generator to the power grid. The county ran on the rental generator until May 1, when ComEd could safely restore power with the new generator in place.

Welter said staff was alerted to power down their computers while the switches happened. The project was completed without issue.

Weekly tests will take place, with the unit run for about an hour, transferring power twice. Testing will be scheduled to occur before the building opens to the public.

Chris Kindelspire, county electronic operations director, said in an email to staff and board members there will be a remote monitoring system for power.

“Now we will be afforded situational awareness regarding power for the facility along with early warning in the event of a minor or major issue with the unit,” he said in the email. Welter said Kindelspire took the lead on the project, which made the project run smoothly.

Habitat to start 12th home MORRIS HERALD–NEWS

MORRIS – The public is invited to join Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity in breaking ground on its 12th house at 918 E. North St. in Morris.

Shanna Enger and her children, Bridget and Bryson, have been selected as the partner family for the 12th home, according to a news release from Habitat.

The ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. May 20 and will include introduction of the Enger family and recognition of sponsors and volunteers.

A volunteer appreciation event will be held immediately after the groundbreaking to recognize all past and present volunteers, according to the news release.

Shanna Enger is a lifelong resident of Morris and has been employed with R-Place Restaurant for 16 years. Shanna and her two children, Bridget, 11, and Bryson, 7, live in a second floor, two-bedroom apartment where her children share a bedroom.

The Enger’s were selected during a rigorous application process. Habitat “partner fam-

ilies,” as they are referred, must present a need for adequate housing and earn 30 percent to 60 percent of the area’s median income.

MORRIS – On a typical Friday, students at Saratoga Elementary School hear an announcement calling for students to come to the multi-purpose room.

What made this past Friday atypical was this intercom message was given by third grade student Emma Johnson, one of the students acting as principal for the day.

At a Parent Teacher Organization fundraiser in March, one auction item up for bid was for a student to become principal for the day. Principal Joe Zweeres said the auction brought in double the money.

“During the auction, we had two families bidding back and forth and back and forth for the principal of the day prize. We decided to give it to two families for the amount they were bidding,” Zweeres said.

To their surprise, both Johnson and second grade student Mossimo Gallo won, meaning the two would put in a full day of principal duties.

“The kids kept busy taking phone calls, taking tours of the school and making notes of things that needed to be addressed, checking on classrooms, and the two even worked the lunch room during first grade lunch, helping students open items,” Zweeres said.

Gallo liked helping with first grade lunch, even if he had to file a report on a student who wasn’t following the rules.

“I had to report someone during lunch, because he punched his milk carton. It didn’t explode into the air. Instead, when he opened it, the milk went all over the table.”

Gallo said.

Communicating with the office and with Gallo was a highlight for Johnson.

“I like the whole day, but it was fun using the walkie-talkie’s to communicate so we didn’t get lost in the school when we were delivering notes and pencils,” Johnson said.

Zweeres said Johnson was very perceptive and took the job seriously when she had to walk the halls to check the school.

Based on my job performance since 2008, two different boards have given me contract extensions. During the first contract, 54 paid the tuition for me to complete a superintendent endorsement program.

During the term of the second contract, I completed a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. District 54

did not pay any tuition, books, or any fee of any type on my behalf for that degree.

I’m in my third contract and when it concludes, I will have served eight years in this capacity.

During the years as a board member and subsequently as superintendent, the entire staff and I have worked diligently to put 54 in a better place.

That’s a little history of the last decade. Of course, I’ve made some mistakes along the way. I’ve had to learn some tough lessons; I’ve learned

for some barn wood. With it, he made an outhouse.

“I love coming to markets because it’s full of people who work with their hands,” Bales said. “Everyone tends to be on their computers these days.

Bales will work with any kind of wood, but since the barn wood was more than 100 years old, he didn’t apply any stains or sealers.

“You don’t mess with barn wood,” Bales said. “It’s lasted this long, why change it?”

one day, she thought it would be fun, until Zweeres said she would probably have to become a teacher first, and then go to school to be a principal.

“I would never be able to do it; I want to become a veterinarian. I already know a lot about animals so it won’t take that much thinking in college,” Johnson said.

Gallo shared his love for jokes, with high aspirations to become a stand-up comedian.

He even gave the group a little taste of his humor.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Many roadway departments in Will and Grundy counties plan on going back to the state bidding process for road salt amid uncertainty on salt price and some not receiving any bids at all last year.

But many public officials are tempering their expectations this year.

Last year, the state’s road salt industry experienced a shortage caused by the harsh 2013-14 winter.

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services has served as a marketplace where rock salt vendors can bid on municipal or county requests.

The city of Morris has never used the state bidding process, Public Works Director Jim Gretencord said.

Instead, it has relied on a partnership with Morton Salt, and will continue to in the future despite the supplier cutting back on supply and increasing prices to $126 a ton.

“I actually get a better price not going through the state,” Gretencord said, adding that the salt comes out of Ottawa, allowing the city to retrieve salt itself instead of relying on delivery, which could take a long time during harsh winters.

However, Gretencord said he doesn’t expect salt prices to go down to pre-2014 levels.

MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MINOOKA – Deb Warning of Minooka has been named a 2015 Fellow for the Illinois Lincoln Excellence in Public Service Series, a leadership program that trains and mentors up-and-coming Republican women in Illinois.

Warning is one of five women selected statewide to participate in the Illinois Lincoln Series this year.

“I’m excited and humbled to have been selected for the Lincoln Public Service Series,” Warning said in a news release. “Each year the Lincoln Series board chooses Republican women who aspire to positively shape the future of the Republican Party, and to mentor others who are willing to serve in public office, policy or government.

“Good policy and governance improves our community and our state. I am thrilled to serve the wonderful people of Grundy County. I expect to become better equipped to mentor and assist others, and am thankful for the opportunities and education this program offers.”

State Sen. Sue Rezin affirmed in the release, “In her several years serving as a member of her community’s school board and most recently as a member of the Grundy County Board, Ms. Warning has proven she has the gravitas, respect, ambition, and fierce conservative leadership

abilities that are necessary in continuing to build a strong coalition of Republican women in government across our state.”

Warning served on the Minooka High School Board of Education from 2003-2012.

She was elected to the Grundy County Board in 2012. Reelected in 2014, she chairs the Legislative Committee. In February 2015, Warning was appointed to the Legislative Committee of the Illinois Association of County Board Members. She serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Illinois Mom’s Association.

She helped establish a local Classical Conversations Community in Minooka.

Warning will be joining a network of almost 200 women who have participated in the Illinois Lincoln Series program, according to the release.

Surviving are two daughters, Denise (Joe) Zinnel-Kross of Corapolis, PA and Danielle Zinnel-Siegers of Homer Glen, IL; three sons, Dorian (Tami) Zinnel of Bourbonnais, IL, Dion (Vickie) Zinnel of Elk Grove Village, IL, and Donald (Jeanine) Zinnel of Braidwood; three grandchildren, Diana Zinnel, Ryan Siegers, and Rick Siegers; and one sister, Marian Cinotto of Braidwood.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Donald F. Zinnel; and one sister, Lorraine Barnett.

Turkish coup leader, former president, Evren dies at 97

By SUZAN FRASER The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey – Kenan Evren, the general who led Turkey’s 1980 military coup that ended years of street-clashes between rival left- and right-wing militias but also unleashed a wave of arrests, torture and extrajudicial killings died Saturday. He was 97.

The ailing former general who later ruled as president for seven years, died at Ankara’s GATA military hospital, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported, hours after he was placed on a respirator due to multiple organ failure.

His family and lawyers were called to his side.

Evren was hailed as a hero at the time of the coup for ending fighting that had left some

5,000 people dead and put the country on the brink of a civil war. But he soon became one of the country’s most controversial figures, remembered more for the torture of former militants and their supporters and for introducing a constitution that restricted freedoms and formalized the military’s role in politics.

Turkish political leaders still are scrambling to replace

the constitution he helped institute.

Last year, Evren, alongside the only other surviving member of the 1980 coup, was convicted of crimes against the state and sentenced to life imprisonment, the first generals to be tried and convicted of leading a coup in Turkey which has a history of military takeovers.

The court decision stripped

him of his military title and demoted him to the rank of a private.

The trial was made possible after the Islamic-rooted government of then prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured constitutional amendments in a 2010 referendum, in the hope that the showcase trial would help put an end to the military’s interventions once and for all.

District 54 teachers receive awards MORRIS – The Morris Rotary Club recognized local school teachers as Teacher of the Year on April 14 at Chapin’s Restaurant in Morris.

Among the six chosen, two are teachers at Morris Elementary School District 54. The club recognizes local teachers annually for their dedication to kids, according to a news release.

Shabbona English teacher Carol Anderson and White Oak Reading Interventionist Betsy Lutz were presented with their awards by Club President Jim Bianchetta. Superintendent Teri Shaw congratulated the teachers on their commitment and dedication to the children, as well as the school district.

Anderson started her career at District 54 in 1998 after returning to college to earn her teaching degree. She has served on many committees

OPINION Time for Ben Carson to run a real race Ben Carson declared recently his presidential candidacy in Detroit. Not a minute too soon.

The retired neurosurgeon and conservative star formed a presidential exploratory committee March 3. Since then, he’s been traveling around the country in what might be called a nonstrategic way – making paid speeches that he had longstanding commitments to give, appearing at events for his Carson Scholars Fund (which awards money to promising students around the country) and, in other ways, not directing any particular focus on the key early states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

At the same time, Carson has been absent from some important party gatherings.

For example, Carson did not attend the GOP summit in New Hampshire a couple of weeks ago that featured a huge field – almost every serious (and nonserious) 2016 candidate. Nor did Carson go to Iowa last weekend for a big social conservative gathering that showcased a large number of hopefuls.

As Carson traveled nonpolitically, he slid down polls of the GOP race. Since the beginning of March, Carson has slipped from 12.3 percent in the RealClearPolitics average of polls – nearly in the top tier of candidates – to less than half that, 5.8 percent, about a week ago. Aides say Carson is doing well on social media and in various outreach efforts.

After Carson announced the exploratory committee, according to Mike Murray, a senior adviser for fundraising and grassroots efforts, the would-be campaign raised $2.1 million from a little more than 30,000 donors, with the average contribution between $50

“It’s been tremendous,” Murray said.

On his committee’s website, Carson has been asking conveniently leading questions designed to offer him encouragement to run.

Which in your estimation is a more important quality for a president: Having a career in Washington politics or having solid values and character?”

Carson’s committee says people “overwhelmingly” choose solid values and character.

Carson made his announcement in Detroit. It’s a natural choice, since it is not just Carson’s hometown, but also a good political choice because some conservatives see the city, mired in bankruptcy and general, long-running decline, as a laboratory for new policies that could reverse its fortunes. Carson could direct special attention to the city’s problems.

Whatever Carson does, it will stand out from the rest of the field. Carson speeches, even in a political setting, can seem more like TED talks on the values that brought him success in the decidedly non-political field of brain surgery.

That ends soon. If he runs, Carson will have to get into politics in a big way. No more putting off questions. Carson may run an unconventional campaign, but it will still have to be a campaign. And it has to start very soon.

Morris shows its support for Ryan Bernickus in several heartfelt ways

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – During Thursday’s baseball game against Sterling, Morris wore hats with the letters RB and the number 31 on the front and the incsciption “No One Fights Alone” emblazoned across the back.

That phrase was certainly in evidence all day as a large crowd gathered in support of former Morris player Ryan Bernickus, who has been fighting osteosarcoma, a cancer that starts in the bones.

The team also wore gray T-shirts with Bernickus’ nickname, “Bernie,” across the shoulders and his former number, 31, on the back, during infield practice before the game.

Bernickus and his family showed up just before the Redskins took infield and he made his way through the crowd of well-wishers on a cane fashioned out of a hockey stick before greeting the team in the duguot.

When Morris completed its pregame drills, the Morris softball team and its opponent for the day, Sycamore, came from the neighboring field.

The Morris team was also wearing its “Bernie” T-shirts, and stood along the grass between the infield and left fied.

The Morris baseball team was on the third-base line, and the Sterling baseball and Sycamore softball teams were on the first-base line.

Continued from page 16 ago, and will not have to return to a hospital until July for a three-month checkup. After that, he will have another couple of three-month checkups, then they will change to six months and then yearly.

In between checkups, he will continue his fight, thanks to a perspective and attitude that goes well beyond his years. He already has completed three years of college at Univeristy of Iowa and, after having taken this year off because of his treatment, plans on attending University of Illinois-Chicago at Rockford to complete his pharmacy degree.

He said this as a matter of fact, not as something he hopes to do.

“It’s kind of the only way for me to look at it,” he said. “You don’t plan for something like this, but you adjust to it and keep going. I am working to be more independent, but I’m not quite there yet. I have to keep going to physical therapy and get to the point where I can live on my own.”

One constant in his life is his parents, Rick and Marcy.

Like Ryan, they don’t seek attention, but they have provided strength for him throughout his recovery.

“My parents,” Bernickus said, taking time to collect himself before continuing.

“During the eight months that I was in the hospital, they never left me alone. I don’t mean that like they were bothering me. I mean that they never left me by myself. They were always there for me.

“The first thing my dad said when we found out was, ‘We will get through this. No matter what it takes, that’s what we will do to get this done.’ ” Not only were there T-shirts and hats being sold, but 11 businesses in Morris pledged to donate $10 per run that Morris scored that day. That meant that an extra $440 went to the fund to help the Bernickus family with their expenses. “The guys on the team did most of this,” Kein said. “When they found out about Ryan, they wanted to do something.

It just seemed natural to pick a date on our schedule and just make a day all about him. The kids on the team, especially the captains, took control and got this thing going. Tyler Bordner, especially, was kind of the ringleader for that and sparked everyone to want to pitch in.

“It was very gratifying to see them follow through on this and it shows what kind of character they have and that they realize there’s more important things than just baseball. When you’re 17 or 18 years old, it’s sometimes hard to see the bigger picture.

“As a program, we like to feel that we do things right.

This gave us a chance to see the human side of things and it’s kind of a reality check.”

It was definitely a day that Ryan Bernickus will always remember.

“It was fun to walk out to the mound again,” he said.

“It’s been four years since I have been on this field. To walk out to that mound again and have everyone there, it was awesome.”

“Ryan had a lot of great moments on this field,” Rick Bernickus said. “This one was by far the greatest. The thing about all this is, I have learned a lot of things from my son.”

Some bridge players follow their inner voices. But most should analyze each deal, considering the alternatives.

Here, South is in four spades. West leads a trump. (What do you think of that choice?) How should South plan the play?

After South opened with a weak two-bid, North responded two notrump, which asked South to define his hand. With a maximum, South rebid three diamonds, showing his “feature,” which is typically the ace or king of that suit.

Many players would draw trumps and run the heart jack, but should fail.

East wins with his king and shifts to the diamond queen. The defenders take two tricks in that suit, then sit back and wait for a club winner. Instead, declarer should draw trumps ending on the board and lead a low heart toward his jack.

If West could take that trick with the heart king, he would do best to shift to clubs. However, South would win with dummy’s ace and cash the heart ace-queen, discarding the diamond four from his hand. Declarer would lose only one trick in each side suit.

Here, if East wins with his heart king, South gets six spades, three hearts and one club. If East ducks, South loses only two diamonds and one club.

Finally, West made a poor choice of opening lead. He should have selected the club three. Don’t be afraid to lead from a king, especially around to a weak hand.

Doctor visit first step in treating chronic fatigue syndrome Dear Dr. K: For the past few months I just haven’t had my usual energy. Should I see a doctor?

Dear Reader: We all have times when we lack energy; it’s a universal human experience. We often can pinpoint the cause: hard physical or mental work, an ongoing stressful situation, lack of enough good-quality sleep.

Most people also probably experience times when they lack energy or feel unusually tired but cannot pinpoint the cause. Sometimes, it’s a brief infectious illness that hasn’t produced the usual symptoms, such as sneezing, body aches or fever. Sometimes, it’s just a mystery.

According to surveys, about 20 percent of people will

Still, fatigue is one of the most common reasons people do seek medical care. My general advice is to contact your doctor if you’re so tired you can’t get out of bed, or if you experience fatigue or lack of energy that is very unusual for you – more intense or more long-lasting.

Two of the most common causes of fatigue are depres-

sion and just plain overwork.

Fatigue may be a side effect of medication or the result of poor sleep habits. Or it may be caused by one of many illnesses, from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, to anemia, heart failure or multiple sclerosis.

Start by talking to your primary care physician. He or she will ask questions and perform a physical examination designed to root out any underlying medical or psychological illness. Many illnesses can cause fatigue. Describe your symptoms in detail to help your doctor narrow down the possible causes. For example: • Do you have trouble concentrating?

• Do you tire more quickly

than usual?

• Do certain activities take more effort than they used to?

As another example, think about which activities you’ve had to limit. For example: • You can no longer stay awake for dinner and a movie.

• You no longer wake up feeling refreshed, even after you’ve slept all night.

• When you exercise, your muscles feel achy and weak in less time than they once did.

Timing also is important.

Tell the doctor when you started noticing a decrease in your physical or mental energy level. Was the change gradual or sudden? Did the onset of fatigue coincide with any other significant change in your life: Had you been ill? Was there a death in the family?

Also, make sure to tell your doctor about any other symptoms you might be experiencing along with the lack of energy. Do you get out of breath easily? Do your muscles or joints ache? Do you have trouble sleeping? Are you feeling unusually sad or anxious? Different symptoms accompanying fatigue suggest different causes.

No matter the root of your problem, there are treatments and practical strategies that can help restore your energy.

The first step is to talk to your doctor.
