Coal City shooting suspect turns himself in

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The suspect in last week’s Coal City shooting of a trucking company owner turned himself in Wednesday at the Grundy County Jail.

Walter L. Webster was wanted on two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery after authorities said he shot Adam Fierro, the owner Walter of a Braidwood Webster trucking company.

“He turned himself in about 2:35 this afternoon,” Sgt. Tom Logan of the Coal City police said Wednesday. “We spoke to his attorney a couple of days ago who said he had been retained and that the suspect would be turning himself in within 48 hours.”

Webster, of Romeoville, was accompanied by his legal counsel, Chuck Bretz of Joliet, according to a news release from Coal City police. Investigator Jason Clark of the Coal City police met with Webster at the jail, where he was read his rights. Clark was advised

by Bretz that Webster would not make any statements to law enforcement at the time, according to the news release.

Webster could not post bail and is being held on a $1 million bond. Webster’s first court appearance is expected

to be within 48 hours, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said.

If convicted on the attempted first-degree murder charge, a Class X felony, Webster could be sentenced to minimum of 31 years in jail with a mandatory 85 percent of time served.

For the count of aggravated battery, he could get six to 30 years, also with 85 percent mandatory time served, Helland said.

“The Coal City Police Department is pleased that he turned himself in without incident at the Grundy County Jail,” Logan said. He said the victim’s family was notified after he was taken into custody.

Authorities responded at 8:10 p.m. April 1 after numerous residents reported hearing shots fired near the Shell gas station at 725 E. Division St. in Coal City.

Fierro, of Braidwood, the owner of Horse Shoe Transportation Company, was found bleeding from gunshot wounds to his body after his vehicle struck an unoccupied vehicle at the Shell station.

During an altercation, Fierro allegedly was shot at several times by Webster, who is an ex-employee at Horse Shoe, according to Coal City police.

Authorities have said Fierro is in stable condition. Coal City Police Chief Tom Best said the department has been working hard to enhance its members to do different jobs so that each one can focus on his or her own job during the investigation.

MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland released the following felony dispositions. The State’s Attorney’s Office often reaches plea agreements in cases following consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a consultation with the crime victim, a review of the offender’s criminal history and weighing aggravating and mitigating factors that exist, according to a news release from Helland’s office. The State’s Attorney’s Office makes no representation as to the accuracy of such information. In all cases, the official records of the court clerk should be consulted for confirmation.

• Kenneth Benson, 40, of Morris, pleaded guilty to possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to six days in the county jail. Benson also was placed on conditional discharge for two years.

• Jose Franco, 28, of Streator, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on probation for 30 months. Franco served 12 days in the county jail and must complete substance abuse counseling and submit to

random drug testing.

• Cody Lutes, 24, of Braidwood, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on probation for two years. Lutes also must perform 30 hours of community service and complete substance abuse counseling.

Lutes served two days in the county jail.

• Christopher Nagra, 24, of Joliet, pleaded guilty to the delivery of alprazolam within 1,000 feet of a school, church, or park and was sentenced to 120 days in the county jail. Nagra also was placed on conditional discharge for two years.

• Matthew Phaup, 34, of Mosier, Oregon, pleaded guilty to possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on probation for two years. Phaup also must complete 30 hours of community service.

• Sarah Strainis, 32, of Morris, pleaded guilty to theft of more than $500 but less than $10,000, a Class 3 felony, and was placed on probation for two years.

Strainis served 11 days in the county jail and must complete 30 hours of community service, must complete substance abuse counseling and obtain a GED.

Pastor Steven Larson member of fire and police departments as chaplain

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Pastor Steve Larson is a brother figure to some, a father figure to others and just “Steve” to many more.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance Chief Tracey Steffes calls Larson the first responder for the first responders.

“We find him on the scene before us quite often,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said.

“We always think, ‘How does he know?’ He has a police and fire radio. He responds if he’s available.”

Larson has been Morris Police Department chaplain since 2001 and Morris fire chaplain since 2005.

“The presence of a ministry and my relationships with the departments have grown over time,” Larson said. “They see me around, get to know me and then trust me. Some have pointed others in my direction.”

Steffes remembers a time when both Morris police and Morris fire had no chaplain.

“EMS, fire and police all see, hear and smell some of the worst things,” Steffes said.

“Before Steve, the way of dealing was, ‘If you can’t handle it, you’re not cut out to do this job. You can’t deal with it.’

We’d bury emotions. Maybe turn to alcohol, or break out in an argument with a loved one.”

Morris Police Deputy Chief John Severson said in addition to helping EMS, firefighters and police, Larson is available in traumatic situations for victims’ loved ones.

Larson has been on the scene of children drowning several times and has had to tell families the gut-wrenching news. He knew at least one of those children personally.

“The things departments see are horrible,” Larson said.

“Whether it be domestic in-

cidents, death or any type of heartache. People want police and firefighters to fix their lives. I want to be an example of looking to the Lord when we have problems. He wants us to come to him.”

Former Fire Chief Bob Coleman saw the need for a chaplain, but Steffes did some things to improve his availability. Larson’s membership in the department is no different than the firefighters.

“He might not be in a 400- to 500-degree hallway, but he’s on the scene,” Steffes said. “Some people don’t believe in God, but in this business you tend to start believing in God.” It’s become more common over the years for small-town departments to have a relationship with clergy, Dite said.

Larson has his own police and fire department uniforms, and finds himself stopping in on a regular basis, even though it’s a voluntary role.

“My love for Christ motivates me to do this,” Larson said. “These men and women need to know Jesus loves them. I believe what they do is a call from God. This isn’t something you do for fun and if you do, I don’t believe you’d last long.”

First Baptist Church of Morris in 2008 after being a youth pastor from 1984 to 2000.

“First Baptist is my primary responsibility,” Larson said. “It wouldn’t be possible without the support of my church. They pray for us as I head out the door to a scene.”

Larson said he’s thankful for the opportunity to be there for all involved. Steffes said he struggles with some decisions as a leader and goes to Larson for guidance. They’ve known

each other almost their whole lives.

“He played ball with my brother,” Steffes said. “We both come from farm families, which I believe are salt-of-theearth people.”

Larson farmed with his father as a child at the family farm five or six miles north of town. He graduated from Morris Community High School and then went to Bible school.

He married his wife Kristi in 1983, and joined the ministry

after. They have five kids, two of whom live in North Dakota, one in Chicago and two in the Morris area, as well as several grandchildren. Larson is a friend to members enjoying nights out with both crews, and serves at funerals for fallen members of the departments and for their loved ones, if asked.

“They say most people are replaceable,” Dite said. “I’m not quite sure he’s replaceable.”

Minooka has been listed as one of the top 10 best cities for young families in Illinois

“We are a friendly, Midwest town with solid businesses, restaurant choices, with a selection of places to worship, great schools, libraries, medical professionals and a variety of service businesses that cause many to find what they are looking for right in their own hometown,” Brennan said.

Minooka’s Police Department, headed by Chief Justin Meyer, saw a 46 percent decrease in crime compared to the previous year and had no formal complaints lodged against its officers for police misconduct again this year.

Other notable projects Brennan mentioned are the CN Rail Road viaduct replacement, which includes the expansion of Ridge Road, from McEvilly Road to Minooka Road, to eliminate the current traffic bottleneck; the widening of the Minooka Road bridge; and the purchase of 66 acres for central detention near Brisbin Road.

However, if the proper safety steps are not taken, planting a flowerbed can increase the chances of damaging underground utility lines. To create awareness about protecting underground utilities and help ensure safety, Nicor Gas is reminding homeowners and contractors to call 8-1-1 prior

to beginning any digging, according to a news release from Nicor.

When making the free call to 8-1-1, you are connected to JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators), which notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint. Once lines have been accurately marked, dig-

ging can begin around marked lines. JULIE neither owns nor marks any underground utilities. Nicor Gas is providing the following safe digging guidelines: • Call before you dig: When starting an outdoor project involving digging, customers are advised to contact JULIE at 8-1-1 or 1-800-892-0123. Calls can be made up to 14 days in advance. The requests can be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

MORRIS – The Grundy County 4-H Association has received a $2,500 donation from local farmer Nicolas Andreatta and America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.

The donation will help the organization plan and implement their annual three-day 4-H Fair, held the last weekend in June at the Grundy County Fairgrounds, according to a news release.

Rolling Stone hurt rape reporting reform The thoroughly discredited story about an alleged University of Virginia gang rape passed off by Rolling Stone magazine as investigative journalism was neither investigative nor journalism.

That was clear even before the 12,000-word analysis by a three-person team at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism took it apart.

All you had to know – and The Washington Post reported this earlier – was the reporter never looked for the supposed culprits or interviewed friends of the victim.

Grasping one emotionally involved source to confirm a preconceived perception of university misfeasance is something you might expect from an activist’s blog but not from a purportedly objective news source.

This has damaged the perception of journalism and the reputation of the University of Virginia, which in fact, unlike many others, reportedly has been supportive of women reporting sexual assault.

Most important, it has set back the movement to reform

rape reporting procedures on college campuses.

The Columbia report caused Rolling Stone to retract the story and drew formal apologies from Managing Editor Will Dana and the piece’s author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely. It doesn’t restore credibility, especially since both apparently will continue in their roles.

The Mercury News had its own experience of flawed reporting 19 years ago when its “Dark Alliance” series was published. The reporter, the late Gary Webb, alleged in essence that the CIA made a deal with the Contras to profit from drug sales primarily to black neighborhoods in Los Angeles and other cities.

Webb had grasped some facts later confirmed in CIA memos, but some key allegations remain unsubstantiated, including the intent to destabilize communities of color. After that, most news organizations – certainly this one – raised the bar for verification and multiple sourcing. The Columbia report said Rolling Stone had a set of essential practices

that, had they been followed, surely would have sidelined the article.

Unfortunately, besides devaluing the premise of investigative journalism, the Rolling Stone report has undercut the seriousness of the plague of sexual assault on college campuses today and has bolstered those whose first reaction to reports is to attack the victim.

University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan put it well: “The story portrayed university staff members as manipulative and callous toward victims of sexual assault. Such false depictions reinforce the reluctance sexual assault victims already feel about reporting their experience, lest they be doubted or ignored.”

In a world of instant communication, the pressure is on news organizations to be first with any story. Rolling Stone’s lifting of its own standards to publish a sensational report is a reminder that the only thing worse than being beaten on a story is to be wrong on a story.

As a political firestorm broke just before Easter in and around Indiana, it quickly became clear our society has lost the ability to talk about religious liberty. Some see it as code for bigotry. Meanwhile, the word “tolerance” is bandied about by people insisting on an adherence to a form of secular intolerance.

Pope Francis has said there are at least as many martyrs today as during the times of the early Church. This isn’t an academic debate. And even as we’ve been touched by the testimonies of relatives of Christian martyrs in the Middle East and Africa, it still may seem a world away.

A trip to Iraq or Africa would mean actually meeting the people, getting to know and understand their lives and needs better and forging relationships.

Andrew Doran, co-founder of the advocacy group In Defense of Christians, says: “America ought to stand with those who share its values.

America invariably goes wrong by placing too much trust in faux allies, such as the Morsi regime or the Maliki government or “moderate” Syrian rebels or the Gulf Arabs.”

Robert A. Destro, professor of law at the Catholic University of America and founder of an interdisciplinary program in law and religion, adds: “Such a visit would also highlight the important role the Kurds and Jordanians are playing in the region. The sad truth is that the United States has no strategy: Everything we do over there ... is a reflection of domestic politics, not strategic thinking about what’s in the best interests of the United States and of the long-suffering people of the region.”

He adds a visit to the area by an American presidential candidate would be a “bonanza for the humanitarian agencies like Catholic Relief Services and World Vision.”

For anyone seeking to be president, it would not only demonstrate some mature leadership, it also would be the decent thing to do.

Everyone benefits from protecting human dignity.

When, not all that far from where Christ was crucified, modern-day martyrs are facing similar fates for following Him, we can all learn a thing or two about just how precious religious freedom is to life, communities and civilization.

Morris boys tennis drops 4-1 decision

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With only two seniors in the eight-man starting varsity lineup, the Morris boys tennis team looks like it might be a work in progress this season. But, judging by the Redskins’ performances in a 4-1 nonconference loss to Plainfield Central on Wednesday, that progress is progressing nicely.

Despite the score, most of the matches were tightly contested, with two going to thirdset tiebreakers. One of those resulted in the lone win for the Redskins, (0-3), as junior Brian Haldorson and senior David Carlos defeated Plainfield Central’s Logan Traina and Sheldon Ticola, 0-6, 7-6, 11-9 at No. 2 doubles. At first singles, Morris junior John Smyk lost to Plainfield Central’s D.J. Calantone, a returning state qualifier, 6-0, 6-0. Redskin sophomore Shaine Hennessy dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to Quin Cockerill at No. 2 singles.

“We have a lot of young guys, but they do have some experience,” Morris assistant coach Eric Davy said. “There’s some talent here, and they have been playing together for a while. It’s good for us to play a strong program like Plainfield Central. I was very proud of the way the guys battled.

Davy, who normally coaches the junior varsity team but was with the varsity Wednesday because of staff scheduling, sees a bright future for the Redskin team this season.

“We are seeing improvement every time we go out there, which is what you want this early in the season,” he said. “The great thing about this group of kids is that they love the game. On Monday, the last day of spring break, we were scheduled to practice from 9 until 10 in the morning.

These kids stayed here until noon because they wanted to play. When you have kids that are that enthusiastic and want to play, it makes them easier to coach because they want to learn and get better.”

Lockport rolls past Minooka in rematch

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Some times it’s best to just forget about a game and move on to the next one.

That’s the approach that Minooka’s softball team will take after playing its second game against Lockport in the past five days.

Last Saturday, the Indians rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to beat the Porters, 10-6, in the title game of the Providence Invite as Alyssa Hajduk pitched the last six innings to cap an impressive 18-inning effort on the mound for the day.

On Wednesday, Lockport broke things open with a sixrun fourth inning and then scored nine more times in the sixth to claim a 16-0 nonconference win in six innings over Minooka, which got just two hits.

“It’s just one of those games where anything that could go wrong, did go wrong, and against a good team like Lockport they’ll make you pay for it, and they did,” Indians coach Mark Brown said. “Our number-one Alyssa has been sick, so that wasn’t the same pitcher that they saw on Saturday.

“So we’ll turn the page since we can’t carry today into

tomorrow. We tell them that when things are going good you can’t get too high and when things go bad, you can’t get too low. So we’ll try to be better tomorrow.”

The Porters (5-1) got the only run that they would need in the second when Bailee Moll scored the first of her three runs following an error, one of six that the Indians (5-4) made.

Minooka threatened early, moving four runners to scoring position in the first three innings. But Porter starter and winner Justine Cielenski, who didn’t pitch in Saturday’s game, got out of trouble and

eventually went the distance, striking out four batters.

Lockport used four hits and three Indian errors to push across six runs in the fourth to end the drama. Gracie Voulgaris (2 for 3, 2 runs) drove in one run and Elena Woulfe (2-4, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) brought home two more.

But it’s a serious enough issue that the Cubs have 72 portable toilets lining concourses and recesses of the ballpark; the city is involved to assure health and safety codes aren’t violated; and the Cubs say they’re standing their ground to play every game this season at the active construction site.

“We’re not looking to move to any other venue,” said Carl Rice, vice president for ballpark operations said Wednesday before the Cubs first game since bathroom shortages created a nightmare on Clark Street during the season opener.

“We did not expect that we were going to have the situation we had, and in hindsight we should have had the porta-

ble restrooms here,” Rice said, adding, “We just feel that right now Wrigley Field is where we want to play our baseball games this year. And getting the bathrooms online as quickly as possible is important for the entire organization, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Rice said two of the three bathrooms shut down for construction should be open May 11 when the first bleacher section is supposed to be ready for use. The last one would be reopened in June, he said.

“It’s a little bit strange,” pitcher Travis Wood said of the scene. “But we were told what was going to happen. It’s just something we’ll have to deal with.”

Nobody expected an already scarce-facility condition to worsen when two more bathrooms in the upper level became unusable Sunday because of a valve malfunction the cause of which Rice said the team was still investigat-

Rice said the Cubs met with city officials to assure health and safety standards, and that it was the city that recommended the portable solution.

“We have a couple little things that we need to make sure with the city, as far as

cleaning, how often their being cleaned out,” Rice said.

“But this is being done combined with the city of Chicago buildings department.”

Tuesday’s “weather” postponement, by the way, had nothing to do with the stadium issues, Rice said, no matter how playable the conditions might have seemed to the untrained eye.

He also called reports the Cubs ran short Sunday on hot dog buns and other food unsubstantiated.

“I have no doubt we’ll get back to that,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “Obviously, there’s going to be growing pains, or building pains – however you want to say it – with the ballpark. Unfortunately, we felt that a little bit on Opening Day. Hopefully, we get all that stuff behind us and just focus on the players and our team is what you want to talk about, not bathroom lines or Porta-Potties.”

That is a good guideline. Today, we have two problems that do not have a common denominator. First, look at the South hand. West opens three clubs, showing a good seven-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points; North makes a takeout double; and East passes. What should South bid?

This is a situation so many inexperienced players get wrong.

They bid three spades, regardless of point-count. Yes, it is true that North, when entering the auction over an opponent’s pre-emptive opening bid, will assume that South has six or seven points – but he has noticeably more than that. South must jump to four spades.

That is passed out. How should the defenders play to defeat the contract?

If West leads the club king, declarer wins in the dummy, draws trumps, ruffs his last club in the dummy, and runs the diamonds for an overtrick. But if West leads his singleton heart, East wins the first trick with his heart jack, then cashes the heart ace and king.

What should West discard?
