Born: Aug. 26, 1948; in Ottawa, IL Died: April 6, 2015; in Morris, IL Robert D. Beldon, 66, of Morris, passed away Monday evening, April 6, 2015, at Regency Care of Morris.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Morris with Pastor Steve Larson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church.

Born August 26, 1948, in Ottawa, he was the son of Robert and Doris(Moats)Beldon.

He graduated from Marseilles High School with the class of 1966.

He received his B.A. Degree from

Lincoln Community College. He was employed for several years in the construction industry.

Robert married Mary Halpin on November 6, 1998, in Morris and they lived all of their married life in Morris.

Surviving are his loving wife of 16 years, Mary; his mother, Doris Beldon of Marseilles; three children, Jeff Beldon of Ottawa, Jacob Beldon presently serving in the U.S. Army in Korea and Rebecca Beldon of Seneca; two step children, Aaron Wendel of Braidwood and Adam(Esmerelda) Wendel of Dalzell; seven grandchildren; one sister, Karen(Warren) Adams of Marseilles; one brother, Michael Beldon of Marseilles; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his father, Robert; and one daughter, Amy. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the laborers union.

Robert was a St. Louis Cardinals fan, enjoyed pro football and watching NASCAR. Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church.

DAVID H. BERGE Born: Nov. 19, 1941 Died: April 4, 2015

David H. Berge, age 73, of Newark, IL, died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 4, 2015, after a battle with Parkinson’s. He was born November 19, 1941, to the late Harold

and Marie Berge, he was a lifelong Newark area resident. Dave was united in marriage November 30, 1963, to the former Vivian Sandeno and they spent the next 51 years together.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian; daughter, Michele (Chris) McArthur; son, Kevin (Sandy) Berge; six grandchildren, Jacob, Ryan and Grant McArthur; Paige, Logan and Traece Berge.

Preceded in death by his son, Kyle; and his parents, Harold and Marie Berge.

Dave first worked at Western Electric and Caterpillar Inc., until he realized his true calling in trucking.

He had an excellent driving record.

When he was younger, he enjoyed being assistant chief with the Newark Fire Department.

After his retirement, he enjoyed mowing and doing part time work at Richie Brothers Sales in Morris, and running for cars with Terry Bentz.

Funeral services for David Berge will be held Friday, April 10, 2015, at Helmar Lutheran Church, 11935 Lisbon Rd. in Newark where he will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until services begin at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will follow in Helmar Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name can be made to Helmar Lutheran Church.

Visitation will take place Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church.

• Cecile Petrungaro, 53, of Minooka, was arrested by Minooka police Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence. She posted bond and was released with a court date.

• Harold A. Range, 56, of Morris, was arrested by LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. He also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured vehicle and improper lane usage.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Third Ward of Morris has a new alderman, Jeffrey Wachowski, according to unofficial results.

Wachowski led the race by 58 votes with a total of 149 votes tallied from four of four precincts reported as of press time. Robert K. Strandell had 91 votes and Zora Baron had 88 votes.

“I’m ecstatic,” Wachowski said. “My second time running and I was all-in. I appreciate the votes of Jeffrey our hard-work- Wachowski ing people in the Third Ward. I’m going to work hard in this four-year term. My phone will always be on.”

Wachowski fills a seat vacated by Third Ward Alderman Brian Feeney, who chose not to seek re-election.

“I’ve spoken to Mr. Feeney to learn the position and appreciate his time,” Wachowski said.

A Democrat running for the second time, Wachowski works for IDOT. In favor of an increased minimum wage, Wachowski said better-paying jobs will bring more homeownership to Morris. He believes the long-anticipated riverfront marina project will bring jobs, tourism and tax dollars that can improve the ward.

“My first order of business will be to settle into the job,” Wachowski said. “I’ve never been a politician before, but I wish more people would get involved. I congratulate my two opponents, they are hard-working people. It takes guts to run.”

Wachowski said he plans to meet with Mayor Richard Kopczick and find out which committees he can join.

A Morris resident since 1989, Strandell chose to run as an independent candidate to better address issues unique to the Third Ward, rather than representing a party, he said.

are putting a stop to recent crime, finding the best use for the former papermill site and supporting the riverfront marina project.

Baron, 19-year resident of Morris, is a Republican who believes in preserving the community. Baron also is concerned about school funding and budgets in Morris. She said she’s against overspending and will fight for infrastructure and capital improvements.

Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson predicted an 18 to 19 percent turnout Tuesday with heavier turnout coming from Gardner and Braceville, where there were mayoral and village board elections.

The Morris Community High School Board of Education had three seats available with six candidates running and only one of them being an incumbent, Judith Roth. The other candidates running for the four-year term seats are Scot Hastings, Kathleen Randall, Lynn Vermillion, Mark Olbrot and Stu Hipes.

MORRIS – In the Morris Elementary School District 54 Board election, Sheryl Dzuryak, Jim Hitchcock, S. Joannie Johnston, and Sandra Marsmaker have won the four seats open on the board.

Dzuryak earned 965 votes, Hitchcock finished second with 908 votes, Johnston came in third with 731 votes, and Marsmaker finished with 721 votes, according to unofficial results from the Grundy County Clerk’s office.

Lisa Kneller and incumbent Caroline Cummings were defeated with votes totaling 431 and 369, respectively.

Channahon board Rezin tours Cook County jail, approves budget highlights need for reforms

MORRIS DAILY HERALD CHICAGO – Calling Illinois’ criminal justice system “in need of some change,” Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, organized a tour of the Cook County Jail with Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, fellow legislators and people involved in the criminal justice system.

“The best way to really get a ‘feel’ for how overcrowded Illinois’ prisons really are, is to see it first hand,” Rezin said in a news release.

Rezin has toured the Cook County Jail several times.

Thursday she was joined by Sen. Emil Jones, D-Chicago; Rep. Robert Pritchard, R- Sycamore; Rep. Camille Lilly, D-Chicago; Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Buffalo Grove;

Rep. Terri Bryant, R-Mt. Vernon; Dr. Melvin Hinton, Chief of Mental Health Services with the Illinois Department of Corrections; Rodger Heaton, Illinois Public Safety Director; and Jessica McMiller Baptiste, Department of Juvenile Justice.

“Reforming the criminal justice system will save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and make our prisons safer for both inmates and our correctional officers,” Rezin said.

Illinois has one of the most crowded prison systems in the country, and the state’s recidivism rate is dangerously high. The Department of Corrections is operating at 150 percent of capacity, while 48 percent of adult inmates and 54 percent of juvenile

inmates are returned to the system within three years of release.

“Providing non-violent first time offenders, including our youth and young adult offenders more positive community programs before their sentencing, will help them get their life back on the right track while also benefiting taxpayers, our prison system, and society as a whole,” she said. “We need to also take a serious look at incarceration time, early release, prison alternatives and community supervision.”

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner issued an Executive Order creating a new commission charged with identifying ways to reform the criminal justice system and sentencing laws in the state.

CHANNAHON – Channahon village trustees Monday approved the 2015-16 budget, with expected revenues totaling $26.6 million and expenses of $27.4 million. The more than $800,000 deficit will be taken from the village’s reserves, most of which will come from the special revenue and capital projects funds.

“We’re in good shape,” Finance Director Heather Morandi said after the meeting. “We have ample revenues to cover operating expenses, and we are fortunate to be able to do some capital projects this year.”

No new personnel is budgeted for the coming fiscal year, Morandi said, but dollars are budgeted for financial software implementation, Phase 1 engineering for the Bridge Street bike path and the widening of Dove Drive, a new truck for the public works department and a stump-cutter that will be used for the continued take-down of village ash trees infested with emerald ash borer. Various street projects also are included in the new budget, as well as utility projects and the purchase of a new fingerprinting machine for the police department.

The Village Board also approved a $12,358 computer purchase from Tiger Direct as part of its computer replacement policy, which was designed to replace older computers at fiveyear intervals. Community Development and Information Systems Director Mike Petrick said because of budget cuts the past couple of years, several village computers are more outdated than should be.

Computers originally bought in 2009 and 2010 will be replaced. Replacements will include two HP ProBook laptops at $550 each, 14 HP ProDesk desktops at $450 each and Microsoft Office Professional 2013 software for all systems at $346 each. Existing monitors for the desktops will be used. Trustees also approved partnering with Troy Township to construct a single layer chip seal road maintenance project on portions of Shepley Road. The work

will be led and managed by the township, with the village contributing $12,500.

The board also approved hiring retired Channahon building inspector Dave Cavanaugh for part-time, temporary work while the village’s current building official is on medical leave.

Trustees Missey Schumacher and Mark Scaggs also warned residents of several phone frauds occurring in the area recently, with scam artists identifying themselves as IRS officials attempting to get information from residents.

Schumacher warned people not to give out personal information over the phone, and Scaggs gave a reminder that the IRS does not conduct business by calling taxpayers. They will communicate by mail, he said.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick, Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc and Minooka Village President Pat Brennan participated locally, along with mayors across the country, in Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service, which spotlights the impact of national service and to thank those who volunteer.

“Anytime we are asked to help the community or help people in need, we’ll be there,” Brennan said.

Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care, said she likes the mayors’ help because the organization always is in need of volunteers, so the opportunity to highlight that need helps.

“I hope people want to follow the lead of their mayor and come out and help,” Gaska said. We Care offers rent, mortgage and food assistance to Grundy County residents.

Kernc said it is important as a community leaders to lead by example.

The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency for national service and volunteering. CNCS engages citizens for service at more than 70,000 sites in 8,500 cities across the country, according to www.nationalservice.gov.

Locally, AmeriCorps VISTA, a national service program designed to fight poverty, provides volunteers who are working with Northern Illinois Food Bank to help bring about awareness.

Kristen Pruitt, an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, was on hand Tuesday volunteering with the mayors.

Pruitt, originally from Georgia, relocated to Channahon after starting her first term with AmeriCorps in November.

“I work with partner agencies in three counties as a capacity building consultant,” she said. “I come in and see what I can do to help the agency.”

She said she helps build donor volume, a volunteer base and teaches the agencies how to feed more people. Kopczick said he enjoyed being involved with the event and learning what AmeriCorps does so he can help support them.

Supporting the volunteers at AmeriCorps is helping citizens as a whole, he said.

Dorothy London, age 87, of Morris passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Born April 23, 1927, in Whitewater, Missouri, Dorothy Mae was a daughter of the late William Sylvanus and Nancy (Hedge) Kinnison.

She was raised and educated in Missouri and on July 7, 1946, Dorothy married Lloyd London.

She will be remembered for her baking and enjoyment of fishing, but mostly for her love of her grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by two sons, Dwayne (Elaine) London of Morris and Kenneth London of Marseilles; ten grandchildren, Darin London, Mike (Michelle) London, Robert (Gayle) London, Gerald London, Steve London, Mark London, Kenny London, Brian London, Jim London and Dorothy London; seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and one sister, Juanita Pogue of Marble Hill, MO. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd (1996); and six brothers and sisters.

Friends and family will gather on Saturday, April 11, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until time of memorial service, 11:00 a.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 East Washington Street (one block east of Route 47) in Morris.

Reverend Dr. Roy Backus will officiate, and a private family inurnment will follow in Zion Grove Cemetery in Dix, Illinois at a later date.

Tucson, AZ. Steve was born on September 17, 1947, in Bari, Italy. In 1949, at the age of two, Steve traveled with his parents to America, passing through Ellis Island, in search of a better life.

He is the son of the late Morris and Elizabeth Taller. Steven married the love of his life, Nanette Teausant, in Corona del Mar in 1981. They shared 34 happy years together.

Taller studied at UCLA, undergraduate and the University of Missouri Medical School. He received an MBA in business from the University of Chicago in 2000.

Dr. Taller came to Morris Hospital in January 1983 and remained on the medical staff until May of 2000.

He served as Director of the Morris Hospital Emergency Department during that time period. Dr. Taller was Board certified in both Internal and Emergency Medicine.

He worked with other members of the Medical staff and Hospital Leadership to successfully achieve a Level II Trauma Status for Morris Hospital Emergency Department in 1988.

He served as Chief of the Morris Hospital Emergency Department committee during his appointment

period helping raise the level and quality of emergency medicine.

Dr. Taller served on the Morris Hospital Board of Directors for many years.

After leaving Morris Hospital, Dr. Taller continued to work in his field of emergency medicine in various hospitals. Taller was passionate about medicine throughout his life delivering the utmost quality care to his patients.

His devotion extended to over an estimated 140,000 patients over his 35 year career.

Steve was a man of many interests. He enjoyed travel and adventure with his family.

He also enjoyed reading, hiking, and time with family. He was a member of the Joliet Universalist Unitarian Church. Taller had various business interests, among them he was developer of Rockwell Estates in Morris, Illinois.

Steven was a loving husband, father, brother, brother in-law and friend.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Nanette (Teausant) Taller; his children, Benjamin, of San Francisco, Jonathan and Willow Taller, both of Morris; his brother, Martin of Los Angeles, CA; his brothers-in-law, Jack Teausant of Ottawa, Terry Teausant of Peru, Gerry Burkart of Ottawa; his sisters-in-law, Mary

Kay Teausant, Sandy Burkart and Jean Pyszka. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Elizabeth Taller.

Taller was very well liked by so many and he will leave an impression forever in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to spend time with him.

Visitation and the Celebration of Steven’s Life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home in Morris.

Ham is the main event for most people’s Easter Sunday feast. The challenge is what to do with all the leftovers.

To me, the best part about having an Easter ham is all the possibilities for future meals.

There are omelets, frittatas and baked eggs. There are ham sandwiches, ham salad and chef’s salad. There are casseroles, pasta dishes and many pots of ham-seasoned bean soup. I’ve gathered a list of my favorites. Some old, some new and some out-of-this-world good.

1. Ham Salad: Nothing can be easier to make than this sandwich spread. Trim fat from ham slices. Chop ham in food processor. Add mayonnaise and pickle relish to taste and enjoy between two slices of bread.

2. Deviled Ham: You can make a fancy ham salad by taking 4 cups coarsely chopped ham and adding 1/2 cup minced fresh parsley, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 6 tablespoons softened butter, 1/4 cup wholegrain Dijon mustard, 3 tablespoons dry white wine, 1 finely chopped celery rib, 2 finely chopped green onions, 1 teaspoon lemon zest, 3/4 teaspoon black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder; 1/2 teaspoon each onion powder and ground cloves; 1 teaspoon each dried thyme, ground allspice and ground cinnamon; 2 teaspoons black pepper; 1 tablespoon chili powder; and fine sea salt to taste. Set aside. Unfold puff pastry and cut into 5-inch squares. Lay slices of ham and Gruyère cheese in the center of each pastry square. Sprinkle with spice mix. Whisk together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water to create egg wash. Brush pastry evenly with egg wash. Sprinkle with more spice mix. Bake 12 to 14 minutes. Remove, let cool for 10 minutes. Born: Jan. 30, 1929 Died: April 5, 2015 Nellie Farley West, 86, of Morris, died peacefully on Easter morning, Sunday, April 5, 2015, after a brief illness. Born January 30, 1929, in Smackover, Arkansas, Nellie was the daughter of the late John Edward and Nellie (Gardner) Farley.

She was a dedicated nurse for over 43 years serving at Warner Brown Hospital and Union Memorial Hospital in El Dorado, AR followed by 19 years at Morris Hospital, Morris, IL. Nellie loved her family and was a proud grandparent. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Morris where she served as a Stephen’s Minister.

Nellie was an accomplished seamstress, wonderful cook and, as her granddaughter says, always wanted to help people out.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy West-Coke and son in law, Don Coke of Dallas, TX; son, Ken West of Morris, IL; daughter, Ruth West Frey and son in law Rob Frey; and her grandchildren, Keira and John Frey of Oswego, IL; as well as

many nieces and nephews from across the United States.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie Gardner Farley and John Edward Farley; 12 brothers and sisters; her husband, Fred West; and her son, John West.

Visitation will be held for Nellie on Saturday, April 11, 2015, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the U. C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris.

MORRIS – The Morris baseball team came into Tuesday’s home game against Plano wanting to erase the memory of Saturday’s loss to Streator.

Behind a strong complete-game performance from Tom Cheshareck on the mound and an opportunisitic offense, the Redskins came away with a 4-2 nonconference victory.

Cheshareck did not allow a run until the sixth inning, and both of the runs Plano scored were unearned. The Reapers scored in the top of the seventh to make it 4-2 and had runners on second and third before Cheshareck got the final batter of the game to ground out to third.

“Tom did a real nice job,” Morris coach Todd Kein said.

“He really peppered the bottom of the strike zone, which was very good to see. He’s still a work in progress, but the progress he is making is very

good.”

Cheshareck helped himself at the plate and on the bases in the second inning. He led off with a walk, then stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch. Chase Hansen also scored that inning. After reaching base an an error, he eventually came around to score on another error to make it 2-0 after two innings.

Hansen started a rally in the fourth inning by singling with one out. He went to second when Jake McDonald beat out a bunt and then both runners stole to put runners on second and third. On a passed ball, Hansen came in to score and, when the throw from the catcher went wild, McDonald scored as well. The Redskins stole eight bases against the Reapers. Cheshareck had two, as did McDonald. Hansen, Emmet Chouinard, Jordan Miracle and Kendall Enger all stole a base as well.

Postponement buys Kris Bryant a game

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The countdown to Kris Bryant just got a little easier to take for Cubs fans and teammates.

How will Tuesday’s postponement affect the pitching rotation? The status of the fifth starter the first time through?

Who cares?

It’s one fewer game the top prospect in baseball will miss as he waits out his service-time purgatory before joining a Cubs lineup that was in dire need of a hit in any of the first three innings during Sunday’s season opener against the Cardinals.

Or in the fifth. Or the seventh.

Any of the 13 times a Cub came to the plate with a man in scoring position Sunday (seven of those trips they struck out).

If fans and pitchers are lucky, the stadium operations boys will come up with another bank of clouds today to blame an early postponement on, and we can trade two Bryant-less games in bleacher-less April for separate-admission doubleheaders in July.

So much down time so early in this much-hyped season might feel like a buzz kill.

But as everybody knows by now, there are countless ways to look at a Cubs bummer and see the glass of urine as half full.

The Iowa Cubs open their Triple-A season Thursday night in Memphis with slugging third-base prospect Bryant in the middle of the I-Cubs’ order.

By then he’ll be on his fifth of 12 days the Cubs need to keep him off the major-league roster to assure an additional year of club control (through

2021) before free agency eligibility.

If today’s Cubs-Cardinals game gets postponed, too, it would mean Bryant gets halfway through that stretch with only two big-league games missed.

How much difference he’ll make to the Cubs’ flawed lineup – much less how much difference he might have made Sunday – is anybody’s guess. (But feel justified drooling over the potential at Coors Field against the Rockies’ scrap-heap pitching staff this weekend).

Few teams have taken as much public heat (and agent/ union backlash) for sending out a prospect as the Cubs did when they cut Bryant from camp with a .425 average, major-league-leading nine spring homers and a 1.652 OPS. Even teammates said they wanted Bryant – who has 174

games of professional experience – on the team, and said he was ready to help, but they understood the business side of it.

Bryant said he believed his performance would have counted more. The players’ union threatened litigation.

“It was uncomfortable around here for a few days,” team president Theo Epstein said, “more so for Kris, unfortunately, than for anybody else. I felt for him.”

By the time Bryant joins the big club, the Cubs likely will be 10 or 11 games into the season, probably on its second road trip of the season (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati in late April).

He might even be a left fielder by then, depending on how Mike Olt’s doing the first two weeks of the season at third.

One thing’s for sure: Bryant will be a major storyline of

this Cubs season for whatever home runs he might eventually hit for them, or for whatever offensively bereft games he’s not here to help.

“I know a few months from now, a few years from now certainly, this is going to be really a blip on the radar screen,” Epstein said, “and the big picture is he’s turning into a great player, and that’s why there was a lot of attention.

“We’ll take all the great players we can get. It’s a good problem to have.”

Note: Tuesday’s scheduled starter, Jake Arrieta, moves back one day to Tuesday, and lefty Travis Wood stays on schedule to open the Colorado series Friday.

Jason Hammel moves to Saturday and Kyle Hendricks to Sunday, with Jon Lester pushed back to Monday’s homestand opener against Cincinnati.

Sox continue unfettered by Royals clubbing

And, oh, Micah Johnson had a 13-pitch at-bat that was good.

Johnson, making his major league debut, also collected his first major league hit.

And then he got picked off in a play that captured the essence of this dud of a lid-lifter on the 2015 season.

Aside from the meaningless Abreu blast and a couple of Johnson’s at-bats, there was little good to be gleaned from in the 10-1 beating Monday given to the White Sox by the Kansas City Royals on Opening Day. The Sox won the offseason, most experts said, so this deflating loss was not the follow-up they expected or wanted.

“We move on,” said Jeff Samardzija, who struggled to command his offspeed pitches, finally failing after two score-

less outings in his previous openers for the Cubs. “That’s what we do. We’re baseball players. We’ve got a heck of a player [Jose Quintana] going out there for us pitching for us next time out [today]. We’ll jump on his back and let him get the job done.”

Almost to a man in the clubhouse, the Sox downplayed the loss, knowing the opener is always magnified and that 161 games remain.

“A lot of games left, so we’re going to go out there and keep playing and learn from this,” said Samardzija, who walked three while striking out one, hit two batters and gave up six hits.

Not that the Sox went down without stirring up things a bit. After Royals starter Yordano Ventura hit Avisail Garcia with a pitch, Samardzija hit Alex Gordon. And after Mike Moustakas homered against Samardzija (who gave up nine homers in spring training), Sa-

mardzija hit Lorenzo Cain.

Cain stared down Samardzija while walking to first. Moustakas was at the top of the dugout yelling at the Sox pitcher, and for a brief minute it looked like things could escalate.

“Nothing,” Samardzija said. “Just hit him. He didn’t like it. I didn’t like it. I didn’t want to hit him. He probably didn’t feel good, so he didn’t like it. Boys playing baseball, no big deal.”

There were no more incidents, only more Royals carnage, but there are two games left in the series, so stay tuned.

Moustakas homer, an opposite-field shot in the fifth, put the Royals in front 4-0. They added five in the seventh, three on a home run by former Sox Alex Rios, who was making his Royals debut. That blast came against Kyle Drabek, the waiver claim pitching in his first game for the Sox. Ventura gave up one run, on Abreu’s homer, in six in-

nings before leaving with a cramp in his right thumb.

The way he writhed in pain on the grass near the mound had everyone in the packed Stadium – including the Sox – concerned for his health. But Royals trainers said it’s not serious. Nor, the Sox say, is the state of the club after one game. As bad as that looked.

“We were joking about that before the game,” said veteran cleanup man Adam LaRoche, who went 0 for 4 with two

strikeouts in his first game as a Sox. “This game probably will be analyzed more than any other game of the year.

But that’s just baseball. It happens every year. Obviously not the way we wanted to start it up. The key is to shake that one off and come right back out Wednesday ready to go.”

“It was their day to have those fall in and I’m hoping that happens for us on Wednesday,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Mandatory water cutbacks are good Residents of large urban areas have weathered California’s current drought, well into its fourth year, without making many substantial changes. Los Angeles was shielded from the full impact by water stored in reservoirs.

Many Sacramento residents still have no water meters.

It’s different now, and good for Gov. Jerry Brown for saying so – and for doing something about it. The governor used Wednesday’s survey of the shockingly paltry Sierra snowpack to underscore the urgent need for water conservation and to impose the first-ever statewide mandatory water cutbacks. His executive order calling for actions to reduce water consumption 25 percent follows a rather lowkey action last month by the State Water Resources Control Board to restrict lawn watering, home car-washing and other less-necessary uses of California’s increasingly scarce commodity.

And it precedes an expected announcement, later this

month, by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California that it will ration water among its member agencies, including Los Angeles. Consumer price hikes are likely to follow.

The water delivered by aqueduct to cities is generally referred to as “drinking water,” a euphemism that invokes images of health and virtue and obscures the fact that about half of urban water, in Los Angeles and elsewhere, is used to water lawns. What flows from the tap is at least as much garden and parking strip irrigation water – or flushing water or showering water – as it is actual drinking water. That leaves plenty of room for conservation measures with relatively small changes in lifestyle that don’t leave urban populations parched.

Los Angeles has grown by about 1 million people since 1970 but today uses about the same amount of water as it did then. Savings were accomplished by a variety of conservation efforts, the

greatest of which was simply changing the code requirements for plumbing. Toilets, once the city’s biggest guzzlers, became the vanguard of conservation.

There remains a virtual river of water that could be captured by making smarter use of the water we have.

Brown announced a rebate program to encourage consumers to replace water-hogging washing machines and other appliances, and that will help.

As the state deals with the drought, there will no doubt be pressure to continue the great water-delivery construction projects of the type that made California grow in the last century. In the short term, though – and perhaps in the long term as well – the most effective projects may come in the form of software to better manage home water use, landscape design to better capture rainwater, and a greater respect for the value of the state’s most precious resource.

SPRINGFIELD – Ever read a news story that gives you a sinking feeling because it just hits too close to home?

That’s how I was feeling the other day when I read about the steel plant closing in Granite City. About 2,100 people are out of work. And lots of folks are asking: Is this really just a temporary closing? I hope it is. Just over a decade ago, in my hometown of Galesburg, a town about the same size as Granite City, we lost 2,000 jobs when Maytag closed its refrigerator plant. I remember hearing the pain in people’s voices as they talked about their jobs disappearing.

It was a time of navel gazing and reevaluation.

Folks wanted things to get better, but they just wouldn’t.

Even today, Galesburg has yet to fully recover.

Illinois factory jobs are vanishing faster than emails on Hillary Clinton’s computer.

But that’s not the case everywhere. Just look at Indiana.

Since March 2012, Indiana has added 39,000 manufacturing jobs, while Illinois has lost 2,500, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That’s a pathetic performance on Illinois’ part. The Land of Lincoln is experiencing an exodus of jobs and people. States with lower taxes or regulations such as Indiana, Texas and Florida have been the beneficiaries of this diaspora. Yet another Illinois steel-industry company announced this month it is moving operations elsewhere.

It is jumping the border to Indiana. And its taking 100 new jobs with it.

South Holland-based T&B Steel Tubing will invest $5.6 million to build a brand-new facility in Gary, Indiana.

Also, Romeoville-based American Stair Corp. Inc., a manufacturer of steel stairs

VIEWS Scott Reeder and railings, announced in February it will be relocating to a new plant in Hammond, Indiana, by the end of the year. This will yield nearly 200 new manufacturing jobs in the border town over the next three years.

So why are businesses moving elsewhere? Many companies prefer to operate in right-to-work states. Recently, I had a chat with someone who promotes economic development in Iowa and Illinois for the Quad-City Chamber of Commerce. He said it’s not uncommon for businesses seeking a site to want to build in right-to-work states.

But Illinois functions at a disadvantage in other areas as well. One of the big areas companies executives consider are the costs of workers compensation. Worker’s comp is the insurance employers have to buy in case an employee gets hurt on the job. Worker’s comp rates in Illinois are among the highest in the nation. According to Springfield-based Selvaggio Steel, steel workers falling under one particular class cost Illinois manufacturers more than $14 in worker’s compensation costs per $100 of payroll. In Indiana, that number stands at just less than $5. Until we see fundamental reform in the areas of taxes, labor law and worker’s compensation, Illinois won’t compete.

By applying common sense to this bridge problem, can South conserve his contract? He is in four spades. West leads the heart ace: four, eight (start of a high-low with a doubleton), nine. West cashes the heart king: seven, three, two. West continues with a third heart, and East ruffs dummy’s queen with his spade 10. How should South continue?

The bidding has a modern slant.

North’s three-heart response is called a cue-bid raise. It shows three or more spades and at least game-invitational strength. Using this cue-bid, a jump to three spades would be pre-emptive, indicating four-card support but fewer than 10 support points. However, if you prefer to keep three spades as a game-invitational limit raise, go with it.

Note West’s third heart lead.

This had two strategies. First, ruffing away dummy’s heart queen would stop declarer gaining a later discard on it. Also, perhaps East’s trump would be high enough to effect an uppercut.

Note that both of these ideas come to fruition. South can no longer pitch his club loser on the heart queen. Also, if he overruffs the spade jack, West will gain a trump trick, and the defenders will eventually take a club for down one.

South, though, should see that if he sheds his club three under the spade 10, his contract will be safe (unless West is void in a minor). ******

‘Bad luck’ is a questionable explanation for getting cancer Dear Dr. K: I thought cancer was the result of risky behaviors like smoking and spending too much time in the sun. But then I read an article about cancer and bad luck. So which is it – behaviors or luck?

Dear Reader: I know the article you are referring to, and I wasn’t very happy with the way it was presented by the media. Let me start with the bottom line: Cancer is caused by (1) our genes, and by (2) our lifestyle (risky behaviors) and environment.

It’s not just one or the other.

Sometimes genes we inherit from our parents cause cancer. An example is the BRCA1 gene that causes some cases of breast cancer.

However, many cancer-causing genetic changes

Sometimes, risky behaviors produce changes in our genes. An example is how cigarette smoke affects certain genes in the lungs and other organs to cause cancer.

Factors in the environment that may or may not be influenced by our behavior can cause cancer. Examples are cancers of the uterus (cervix), liver and stomach caused by various viruses and bacteria. Or skin cancers as the result of unprotected exposure to sunlight.

The study you refer to involved a complex analysis

of cancers and stem cells in multiple different organs.

Each of our organs has its own stem cells. Organ stem cells are there to replace older cells in the organ when those older cells die. Stem cells divide frequently.

The study was asking whether some cancers occur simply because an organ’s stem cells divide frequently. That could cause cancer because each time a cell divides, there is a risk of developing genetic changes (“bad luck”). If so, organs that have the most frequently dividing stem cells might have the greatest risk of cancer.

That’s what the researchers found. And they estimated about two-thirds of all cancers might result from

such bad luck.

In my opinion, the authors’ conclusion that bad luck accounts for most cancers is questionable on two grounds.

First, we know the rates of some cancers (like skin cancer, or nose and throat cancer) are a hundred times more common in some parts of the world than others.

That implies a huge effect of the environment.

Second, using the phrase “bad luck” implies there is nothing to be done about random cancer-causing genetic changes.

That may be true currently, but it is entirely possible that a deeper understanding of the biology of cancer will reveal ways to reduce the risk of such random changes.

I think it’s unwise to say most cancer is caused by bad luck – particularly when the argument is quite speculative.

That’s because it could discourage us from pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and from getting cancer screening tests that can catch cancers at a curable stage. (I’ve put a table of recommended cancer screening tests on my website, askdoctork.com.)

We can control our fate, though not completely.

That’s true of minimizing our risk of cancer, as well.

Cancer is not just a matter of bad luck.
