Born: Nov. 12, 1969; in Morris, IL Died: April 2, 2015; in Peoria, IL Lynette J. Drake Lowery, 45, of Ottawa, formerly of Marseilles, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Funeral services will be 12:00 noon Tuesday, April 7, at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home with Reverend Duane Kaufman officiating.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.

She was born November 12, 1969, in Morris to Jack and Barbara (Tuntland) Drake. Lynette was a Hall Monitor at Ottawa Township High School. She enjoyed her friends, her family and her backyard.

She is survived by one son, Tad Lowery of Ottawa; two brothers, Kevin Drake and Vernon Drake, both of Marseilles; and her former husband, Jeff Lowery of Marseilles. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Matthew; one sister, Jackie Sternall; and her fianc , Mike Noon.

MARK D. GARBRECHT

Born: March 6, 1960; in Chicago, IL Died: April 2, 2015; in Odell, IL Mark D. Garbrecht, 55, of Odell, passed away Thursday morning, April 2, 2015, at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 6, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at the Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Rev. Luanne Bettisch officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Born March 6, 1960, in Chicago, he was the son of Garby and Patricia (Meyers)Garbrecht. He graduated from Joliet West High School. He was a self employed photographer and owned and operated Garbrecht Photography in Lockport. He also was a medical equipment service technician.

Survivor’s include one daughter, Molly Garbrecht; three brothers, Girard (Ellen) Garbrecht of Morris, Chris Garbrecht (Mark Wilson) of Chicago and Paul(Betsy)Garbrecht of Palos Park; one niece and one nephew; one aunt, Sister Carol Meyers of Algonquin.

Preceding him in death were his parents. The family expresses deep appreciation to his friends and neighbors in the Odell community for their help and support.

Morris schools, graduating from Morris High School with the Class of 1950. She worked for many different businesses in the Morris area doing office work. She enjoyed going to the gambling boat but her pride and joy was her dog “Dazy.” “If you smoke, stop.”

REBECCA L. SOWERS

Born: Nov. 12, 1940; in Gardner, IL Died: March 31, 2015; in Joliet, IL Rebecca Leigh Sowers “Becky,” age 74, and a lifelong resident of Gardner, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born November 12, 1940, in Gardner, Rebecca Leigh was a daughter of the late John “Frank” and Josephine (Kroll) Sowers.

She was raised and educated in Gardner, and worked for Sowers Grocery Store in Gardner for many years. Becky later held employment with Wescom, before going to work at the Fox Developmental Center in Dwight,

where she retired as a Mental Health Technician. She was an active member of Braceville United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Gardner American Legion Auxiliary, Gardner Lions Club and the 13 Run Club.

Becky enjoyed counted cross stitch needle work, bowled on a league in years past, and took pleasure in playing bingo.

Survivors include one sister, Marsha Sowers of Gardner; and one sister-in-law, Sandy Sowers of South Wilmington; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Becky was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, John, Wayne, Archie and Harold Sowers; and six sisters, Maxine Dite, Betty Huston, Lorraine Brockman, Dorothy Muzzarelli, Jean Treasure and Juanita Marshall.

Visitation will be held on Saturday April 4, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service, 11:00 a.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty Street in Gardner. Pastor Bennett A. Woods from the Braceville United Methodist Church will officiate, and cremation rites will be accorded following the services. A private family inurnment will follow at a later date in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Becky’s memory to the Braceville United Methodist Church, P.O. Congregations celebrate Jesus’ last words in cooperative event

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On one of the holiest day for Christians, Good Friday, people from many congregations walked together, church to church, through the streets of Morris carrying a cross to represent the walk Jesus made more than 2,000 years ago.

“We are all the body of Christ,” Father Ed Howe of Immaculate Conception Church said during the walk. “We are many different faiths and it’s important to share together in Christ.”

“It’s very eye-opening to have the experience of carrying a cross to see what Jesus went through,” Maren Bashor of Morris said.

She finds the Good Friday tradition to be a calming experience and she looks forward to coming each year. “It’s cool to see all the churches together. I like to worship Jesus with friends and community,” Bashor said.

During his last hours on the cross, Jesus said seven final statements, often referred to as the seven last words of Jesus Christ.

Those words were spoken Friday afternoon as participants in the Good Friday – Walk with the Cross that journeyed from church to church in the downtown Morris area.

Living Water Church of the Nazarene Pastor Steve Cook said the event had an awesome turnout this year with more people joining than previous years.

“This gives you a visual of the hearts of the people in our community,” Cook said.

“When you walk with a cross it’s a reflection of remembrance of the walk 2,000 years ago.”

The Rev. Dr. Roy Backus, with First Presbyterian Church in Morris, organized

the cross walk several years ago and opened it to the downtown Morris churches to participate.

The walk Friday included First Presbyterian Church; St. Thomas Episcopal Church; Life Church, which leads devotion at the Canal Port Plaza; Christian Youth Center; First United Methodist Church of Morris; Immaculate Conception Church; and Living Water Church of the Nazarene. At each church, those attending heard the word and a short devotional on what it means.

LOCAL NEWS Police gathering reports on shooting 2 candidates running

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City police met Friday to create reports from the information gathered in the shooting of Adam Fierro of Braidwood so they can continue momentum in their investigation.

“We’re getting our paperwork together and turning everything into report form so we can see where we are going from here,” Sgt. Tom Logan said Friday morning.

He said the next step would most likely be meeting with Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

Authorities responded at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday after numerous residents reported hearing shots fired near the Shell gas station at 725 E. Division St. Once they were on the scene, officers found Fierro, 43, in a silver Dodge Ram bleeding from gunshot wounds.

Fierro is the owner of Horse

Shoe Transportation Company of Braidwood, according to a news release from Coal City police Thursday night.

Fierro was being dropped off near the gas station by an employee to retrieve his vehicle. The employee then left without witnessing the shooting.

During an altercation, Fierro was allegedly shot at several times by the suspect, who is not yet being named, but is an ex-employee at Horse Shoe, according to the release.

Logan said police have decided to withhold the name of the suspect, believing its release could taint the investigation.

He said they will continue to work on the case until an arrest is made.

Fierro was found in his vehicle after driving from the scene of the shooting to the Shell station, where he struck an unoccupied vehicle.

Logan said Fierro’s vehicle had bullet holes in numerous

locations and that windows were shot out.

Thursday afternoon, Coal City police obtained a search warrant for Fierro’s phone, which was seized at the scene.

Video surveillance also is being attained from local businesses.

“We’ve received the warrant for the phone and the technicians are working to unlock the technology to get the records,” Logan said Thursday.

“Once we obtain that information, we will probably seek a warrant for the suspect.”

Authorities called the shooting an isolated incident.

Police worked Thursday to locate the suspect at several locations outside of Grundy County and continue to follow up on leads Friday.

Fierro was taken in critical condition Wednesday night to Morris Hospital, then was flown to Loyola Hospital in Maywood.

By Thursday, he was in stable condition.

By JESSICA BOURQUE Shaw Media correspondent COAL CITY – After an eight-year stint serving as the village president of Coal City, Neal Nelson is not re-running for the position this election year, and two new candidates will be battling at the polls Tuesday to take his place.

Coal City locals Thomas J. McKinney and Terry Halliday are this year’s candidates for Coal City village president.

Whoever is elected to the position will serve a fouryear term as the leader of the village board.

Following is a profile of Halliday. McKinney did not respond to multiple attempts to reach him.

Terry Halliday

Halliday has been a member of the Coal City Village Board for 16 years, winning his first election as trustee in 1999. Before being elected, he spent two years serving on the village’s Planning and Zoning Board.

Halliday became involved in local government after previous president Gerald Pierard encouraged him to run for the board.

“I decided to throw my hat in the ring,” Halliday said.

“Once I got into it, I really enjoyed making a difference in the community that I’ve lived in my entire life, and I decided to continue.”

Five-year Girl Scout veteran Carli Johnston relived her days of camp where the bugs, hot sun and crazy dancing were vivid memories. The dramatics were real, with Johnston crawling on stage, swatting bugs. Johnston admits camp was fun; however, other indoor activities were her favorite this past year as a scout.

“I like all of the adventures we take. We went to Legoland and the Rainforest Café. The 4-D movie was the best because when the characters went through a waterfall, we all got wet too!” Johnston said. “We are also going to go to a White Sox game this summer. If you walk into my house, you will know that I am a White Sox fan.”

This first-time talent showcase was organized by Girl Scout Membership Specialist Tycee Bell to help bring scouts to the community.

“The main reason we did this was to keep the community engaged with the Northwest Indiana and Greater Chicago area Girl Scout troops. We had some extra funding, and our department was given the funds to create more membership events like this, to show girls what Girl Scouts is all about and put them in touch with local leaders,” Bell said.

Third-year scout member Elise West and four-year scout member Abby Hougas also took the stage with Johnston in the camp skit, as supporting actresses. At one point, West went to find s’mores for her hungry friend and Hougas danced with jazz hands to keep the crowd going during the show held Thursday at the Morris Area Public Library.

The Minooka Fire Protection District responded to a shed fire about 7 p.m. Thursday on Creekside Circle. The fire was cleared after an hour, with assistance from the Channahon Fire Protection District, according to the district. Firefighters were not sure of the cause. No one was injured.

Opposite of their leading lady, West and Hougas said camp was their top activity in Girl Scouts.

“We like to go camping in the summer with my friends and we make our own food. I like hiking through Gebhard Woods as a troop, and my family likes to camp and hike on our own too.” West said.

Hougas said camp and hanging out with her friends is her favorite Girl Scout activity, making this show a perfect fit.

Next on stage was Ayla Denault, who is in her first year of Girl Scouts, and two-year scout member Anna Bibly. The girls whispered and snickered until they finalized their plans to create an act about helping friends, which is fitting because both girls said their reasons for being in scouts is to have fun, meet new friends and find ways to help people.

“I have fun with my friends

from scouts. I also liked going to the fire station and learning from the firefighters. They showed me how to put out a real fire when we were outside.

Oh, and I sat in the truck too.”

Denault said.

The social interaction and being hands on is what Bibly is interested in learning. “I get to meet new friends in Girl Scouts, make crafts, go to day camp and learn how to make and try new foods,” she said.

Bell wants to host more events like the talent show, where girls from kindergarten through 12th grades can come, learn and have fun, without feeling the pressure of registering.

“We offer a variety of programs, camps, and events girls can join, without becoming a Girl Scout member. Girls can look us up online at girlscoutsgcnwi.org to find out more local information,” she said.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – There are two seats available on the Gardner Fire Protection District Board: one for a four-year term and the other for a six-year term.

Tuesday’s ballot will find incumbent John Hollmeyer running uncontested for the four-year term. For the sixyear term, former district board member Barbara J. Baker is running against newcomer Todd Perkins.

Baker filed objections against Perkins’ petition for the fire district board and lost.

She also filed against Michael Pasternak and was successful at keeping him off the ballot.

The election board overruled the objection of Perkins and left his name on the ballot.

Perkins is a lifelong resident of Gardner.

His father, Tom Perkins, previously sat on the fire district board, and his cousin, Terry Jensen, is the current fire chief. Perkins said he has seen through his dad and cousin the work that needs to be done in the fire district, and hopes that he can bring the financial experience necessary to help the district.

“Someone needs to get them out of the financial position they are in,” Perkins said. “Hopefully I can leave the Todd Perkins district better off and look back and know I had something to do with that.”

He said his experience at Caterpillar working in management, which has involved finding ways to save the company money on contracts, will help with the decisions that the district needs.

Perkins said the first thing to look at is the loans that the previous fire department entered and were locked into.

“We have to find someone who will consolidate these loans,” he said. “If we can consolidate and get a cheaper rate and a lower price to pay each month, that will help.”

He said the second step will be to take a close look at the expenses and see if there is anywhere items can be cut that won’t be a detriment to the district. He said because of the financial issues of the previous fire department, he knows the district needs to watch more carefully and control the situation.

“Someone has to be held accountable,” he said. “We have to see where we can save.”

Perkins would like to avoid additional taxes, but realizes the board must keep fire and ambulance services in the community.

“If it keeps an ambulance in this town, then we have to do what we have to do,” he said.

“I don’t want my taxes going up either.”

He wants to spend the next six years creating financial stability where the district doesn’t have to go to the village to get tax advances on tax increment financing (TIF) funds. “We can’t keep going to the village. That is not the way to keep the fire district in a good position,” he said.

Baker moved to Gardner in 1969. She was appointed to the Gardner Fire Protection District in 2011 to fill the vacancy of the late Terry Marketti.

She served on the board until 2012, when she resigned. She cited as a reason the board not understanding the statutes and Barbara J. rules concern- Baker ing a fire district, and an unwillingness to change.

“I take/took my oath of office very seriously. I swore to uphold the laws of the state of Illinois – but you et al stand in the way of me doing so,” she said in an email response to another board member when asked why she was resigning.

She said she feels now is the time to run for the seat because she wants to protect the interest of the taxpayers.

“There was an opening and I thought the time was right now to run,” she said.

She said the district has faced several issues since she left and she thinks there are areas that can be improved upon with her returning to the board. Baker said the district needs to set a budget and stick to it.

“They set a budget because it’s required by law, but they don’t stick with it,” she said.

“They need to become very tight-fisted with the money they spend.”

Seven look to fill four Gardner commissioner seats

Robert Wolf, Dick Hileman, James Riley and Terry Jensen are seeking to retain their positions on the board.

The race also includes newcomers former mayor Gerald VonQualen, Patricia Parks and Edward Fellows.

Robert Wolf, incumbent

Wolf was appointed to the board by late mayor Tom Wise. He has served as the Parks and Safety commission- Robert Wolf er.

Wolf has lived in Gardner for 21 years and has raised his children there. He is involved in youth football and baseball in the community and said he is glad that with him as a board member, the village has been able to help the youth organizations.

“I’m not a yes man,” Wolf said. “I was appointed to the board and there have been things I’ve agreed with and things I’ve debated.”

He said he is running because he thinks the village is doing the right things, but historically he feels they haven’t always made the best decisions.

“We’re making money, we aren’t selling bonds to pay for anything,” Wolf said. “If we had a 25-year-old kid who had the right ideas I would step down, but I feel that I am needed on the board.”

The change he’d like to see in Gardner is the addition of more businesses. He said they have lowered taxes and with the right business he feels they could lower taxes even more.

“If we could get one more good business in town we’d be good,” he said.

village building inspector for three years and served as mayor from 1995 to 1999.

He said during his time Gerald as mayor he did VonQualen two low-income surveys and received two $400,000 grants from the state for the water treatment plant and water main replacement, as well as receiving a $400,000 low-interest loan for improving sewer and drainage to bring in a 300,000-square-foot nuclear laundry facility.

“My tenure as mayor has been criticized for leaving Gardner with limited funds,” VonQualen said. “The fact is that the board I served on worked very hard to prepare Gardner for the future. When we had the opportunity to bring the nuclear laundry to town, we had to scramble to get funds to make it come to fruition. It was because of the $800,000 worth of grants to improve our infrastructure that we were the only community in Grundy County that could offer the amount of water service they required. The result was low fund totals, but the laundry’s water bill was enough by itself to pay for the low-interest bond we had acquired. The property taxes on the 300,000-square-foot building was in excess to expenditures by the village. In the 1999 annual audit, Tim Smith proclaimed the village was in good financial shape.”

He said he is running for the commissioner position because he’d like to improve transparency and encourage more business growth as well as stop the intergovernmental fighting between taxing districts.

He’d like to see the village reinstate the Beautification Committee to work on cleaning up the village as well as create a Business and Industry Committee and have a member that attends the Grundy Economic Development Council.

James K. Riley, incumbent

Riley has lived in Gardner for 18 years and was appointed to the board in February to fill the seat of Mike S e r e n a , w h o James K. was appointed Riley mayor.

He said he is running to keep Gardner moving forward.

“I just want to see Gardner succeed,” Riley said. “The board has been doing it right and they want to keep going and moving forward.”

Riley said he’d like to see some changes as well. He wants to see more community involvement and he’d like to reinstitute Gardner Days to give residents a sense of pride and a place to celebrate their village.

He also would like to bridge the gaps between the various taxing districts in the village.

“I want to meet with them, the high school board, the grade school board, and the fire district and see how we can work together. Fighting is not good for the residents.”

Riley said he also wants to see the village bring in more business by utilizing the Interstate 55 interchange.

Dick Hileman, incumbent

Hileman has sat on the Village Board for 16 years and has lived in Gardner nearly 50 years with his wife, who was Dick Hileman raised there.

He said he is running because the village has moved forward, and has completed 99 percent of the water line replacement with sewer replacement ready to start this year, and he’d like to see those changes while he is on the board.

He said when he was elected to the board Gardner had the highest property tax in Grundy County, and while on the board they’ve decreased taxes cutting the real estate

tax 50 percent, twice in his time on the board.

He would like to add water and sewer to the TIF district so they can bring in business.

“I would like to see the Industrial TIF west of Route 129 take off. We should have added water back in 1997 to 1999 when the state offered to put casings in when they redid Interstate 55,” he said. “It will take $1.5 to $2 million to get water and sewer over the interstate and I would like to see that done.”

He said he also would like to work with the other taxing districts, but said it is a twoway street.

Terry L. Jensen, incumbent

Jensen was appointed to the board to replace commissioner Jim Hibler in 2014.

He also is the Gardner Fire Terry L. Protection Dis- Jensen trict Chief.

“I was appointed by Tom Wise to the vacant seat. He said he wanted me to be the water commissioner because it was a good fit. He said if there was a water issue in town, he wanted the fire chief to be aware of it as well,” Jensen said.

Jensen said he has faced a lot of challenges in his time on the board, and is learning something new every day.

He is running because he has a willingness to work with the commissioners and he’d like to see the storm sewer project that is out to bid come to completion.

“We must move forward, we have to work together,” Jensen said. “I feel like we can continue to make the village a good place to live.”

He also would like to see more business growth in the area, namely new warehouses near Route 129 in the TIF district.

“We can’t outgrow our water and sewer, but we need to get out there and let people know we want growth.”

He moved away and worked in various financial positions including as a federal bank examiner.

He said he felt he should run because it’s time to add new blood to the board.

With his 30-year background in the banking industry, he said he wants to take a look at the finances of the city and address things like the overpayment of extensive attorney fees, and why the village spent money in the lawsuit with the high school over TIF funds.

“I think we need to take a closer look at how taxpayer money is being spent,” he said.

Fellows said he would like to see change in the way of revitalizing downtown development and bringing more businesses to town to create employment opportunities.

He said the board could go out to businesses, similar to what they are looking to have in Gardner, in neighboring towns to see what it would take to have such businesses in the village.

“I did several FOIA requests at the village, and I found that in the last three years we’ve had 19 new businesses open and 27 close, that’s not good,” Fellows said.

“We have a huge, huge opportunity with the industrial development south of town and I wanted to be sure that gained some traction,” he said.

Halliday was referring to the new inland logistic port south of Coal City which is predicted to greatly help the village tax base and job landscape once it is completed.

“With my experience and

knowledge of what is going on in the community, I thought this was a great time for me to provide some leadership and help some of these major projects along,” Halliday said.

Aside from completing key projects, if elected, Halliday said he would like to focus on improving three key areas: growing revenues, cutting costs and maintaining infrastructure.

“We have a tight budget

and it’s going to continue to be a tight budget,” Halliday said.

“We need to continue managing our costs as much as possible.”

Halliday said he does not fear differences of opinion between him and others on the board; in fact, he looks forward to having different opinions as he said that is key to making good decisions.

“It’s OK if we don’t all agree. You need a board that

challenges each other. That’s when the best decisions are made,” he said.

With ample experience with and understanding of the Coal City Village Board, Halliday said he feels he could be a great municipality leader.

“I just think with my experience, I can step into this job with a lot of knowledge,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing if the people decide I’m the right person.”

MORRIS DAILY HERALD COAL CITY – About 165 area families took part in the mobile food pantry sponsored by the Morris Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that took place at the Coal City Early Childhood Education Center.

The mobile food pantry for We Care of Grundy County was held March 11.

With a total of 10,074 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 61 pounds of food, including 18 pounds of frozen meat and a wide variety of other items including potatoes, carrots, broccoli, BBQ chicken sandwiches, apple juice and bread, according to a news release from We Care.

“The work that We Care performs in our community is so beneficial and is so needed.

It was a pleasure to help with this great event. Our members loved getting out and we look forward to helping with this and other initiatives again,” Steve Gordon, local bishop of the LDS Church, said in the release.

“This was the first time the LDS Church sponsored a mobile pantry for us and the first time we held a mobile in Coal City at the Early Childhood Education Center. The church had a great turnout of volunteers and the Early Childhood Center was a perfect site for the event. A big thank you to the church and to the Coal City Unit School District for their assistance,” We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said in the release.

The next mobile food pantry is sponsored by New Community Christian Church and will take place on Wednesday at the Mazon Verona Kinsman Middle School, 1013 North St., Mazon. Registration will begin at 4:15 p.m. To ensure the safety of children leaving school, do not arrive before 4 p.m. Distribution will begin at 5 p.m.

April is here, spring has sprung, Spring Break is almost over.

That all means that the spring sports season is under way for area high schools.

Most teams in most sports have already started, and the others will begin this week.

Traditionally the spring season is a good one to local teams, and this year is shaping up to be another banner campaign.

The Morris baseball and softball teams are both defending Class 3A regional champions and hope to defend those crowns in late May. They are both off to pretty good starts.

The baseball team is 5-2-1, having beaten strong Class 4A progams Minooka and Bradley-Bourbonnais and tied with 4A Plainfield Central. Their only losses are 11-0 to Plainfield North, ranked No. 6 in the state in the preseason by Prep Baseball Report, and 5-4 to Fenwick, which also beat Naperville Central, 8-0.

Pitching and defense will be the key for the Redskins as the spring rolls on, and they look to be in good hands with both. There were big shoes to fill when last year’s seniors graduated, but the players who have stepped in to fill them have done so admirably.

If the pitching and defense hold up throughout the season, the bats will come around enough to provide the runs.

As far as softball goes, Morris is off to a 6-2 start, losing only to Plainfield Central and Joliet Catholic. Like the baseball team, there were significant losses because of graduation, they have plenty of returning experience as well. The players who are new to the starting lineup have made an impression.

The Morris girls soccer team has been a juggernaut in the early season despite missing some players because of injuries, vacations and college visits. The Redskins, who have won two straight regional championships, are currently 4-0, having outscored their opponents, 25-2, in those games. Not only is the offense finding the back of the net with regularity, the defense has been stellar, as three of the wins were shut-

Minooka’s girls soccer team started the season 3-0, but have lost their last two, including Thursday night’s Southwest Prairie Conference opener to Plainfield South.

The Minooka softball team, Class 4A state champions in 2013, is hoping to duplicate its recent run of success. The Indians did not win the Southwest Prairie Conference title in 2013, but they did last year.

They beat Downers Grove North, 10-4, in the opening round of the Providence Catholic Tournament on Thursday and will take on the hosts at 11 a.m. today in the semifinals.

The Indians’ baseball team always has been one of the top teams, but they are battling injuries early on. The defending champions of the WJOL/ Don Ladas Memorial Tournament will not repeat, as they lost their first-round game Wednesday to Providence Catholic, who was last year’s Class 4A state champion. To make matters worse for the Indians, their first Southwest Prairie Conference series is with Plainfield North next week.

Another powerhouse in the Minooka spring arsenal is track and field. During the brief indoor season, the boys team won team titles twice at Homewood-Flossmoor, and at Lockport and Plainfield South. The Indians, as always, are part of a solid program and contribute in every event.

The girls, meanwhile, are just as solid and set numerous school records during the indoor season. They won the Southwest Prairie Conference title, and finished second at the Homewood-Flossmoor Invitational.

Coal City’s baseball team will drop from Class 3A to 2A this season, and that should give the 2A teams around the state a good scare. The Coalers are already 8-0, with wins over Ottawa Marquette, which won

Minooka softball hopes to build on success

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Even though the Minooka softball team didn’t repeat its 2013 Class 4A state championship, the Indians didn’t view 2014 as a down year.

It’s hard to when you finish 20-12 and win the Southwest Prairie Conference title. The Indians didn’t even win the SPC crown the year they won the state championship.

When he looks at the upcoming 2015 season, Minooka coach Mark Brown, who was recently recognized as 2014 4A Sectional Coach of the Year and one of eight 2014 4A Coaches of the Year by the Illinois Coaches Association (ICA), can’t help but be excited.

That will happen when you start with two quality pitch-

ers such as Alyssa Hajduk and Shannon Stuckley, and add in returning all-SPC shortstop Caty Bell.

“We are going to be strong up the middle,” Brown said.

“When you look at the strength of a team, that’s a good place to start.”

Hajduk will play center field when she doesn’t pitch, with Stuckley playing first when she isn’t on the mound.

Depending on who is pitching that day, junior Courtney Kurtz will either be in center or at first.

Hajduk hit .400 with four doubles, six triples, three home runs and 26 RBIs last season for the Indians as a sophomore.

Behind the plate will be junior Audrey Hanouw, who handles both pitchers during the summer and brings that familiarity to the field.

NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

By STEVE GREENBERG sgreenberg@suntimes.com INDIANAPOLIS – It has been said over and over: No one is having more fun this college basketball season than Wisconsin superstar Frank Kaminsky.

In no particular order, the big fella from Lisle repeatedly has been “caught” busting out gangly and awesome 7-footer dance moves, had a strange and hilarious on-camera celebration with the Big Ten trophy, revealed himself as the geekiest of video-game enthusiasts and clearly reveled in his “Frank the Tank” fame.

Don’t let any of it fool you.

Kaminsky is here – surrounded by the greatness of Kentucky and Duke, yet still an unlikely leading figure at this Final Four – because he kept his nose to the grindstone and improved over the course

of a full college career as much as any player of his time.

You want revealing? Ask Kaminsky what the experience of losing in the Final Four a year ago to Kentucky, a game in which he scored only eight points, taught him.

“I learned that maybe I wasn’t as good as I thought I was at that point,” he said Thursday.

Boom – it gets no realer than that. And he’s dead on with his self-assessment. Kaminsky became a household name during the 2014 NCAA tournament, but it was premature, if we’re being totally honest. He was a player still fully in the throes of his own development – a body not yet strong enough, scoring moves not yet refined enough – and nowhere close to what he would become as a senior.

“It definitely wasn’t easy, but I was willing to put in the time, effort and work to

do so,” he said. “It has gone better, better than I planned.

At the end of the day, there’s still a lot of work left.”

In this season of otherworldly freshmen at Kentucky and Duke, player development remains the Wisconsin way. And maybe it’s still the Big Ten way. Certainly, it’s the Michigan State way.

There have been seasons when the Spartans seemed to have more talent than the rest of the teams in the Big Ten, but this isn’t one of those. This has been the year of the grinder in East Lansing, Michigan, embodied most dramatically by small, skinny senior guard Travis Trice.

Without half the fame and stardom, with a scant fraction of the notepads and microphones in his face, Trice has nevertheless gone and pulled off a total Kaminsky. Even last season, Trice was a role player for the Spartans and still a

team to the Final Four that Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski – whose Blue Devils will try today to beat MSU for a second time this season – called him the player of the tournament.

“The other three teams here are No. 1 seeds. They definitely have more McDonald’s All-Americans, more star power than we do,” Trice said.

“At the same time, I feel that’s kind of what drove us to get here, an us-against-the-world mentality.”

That sort of thinking has taken both Trice and Kaminsky far. Not long ago at all, the world didn’t have a clue who either guy was. Their developments as players, team leaders and representatives for their schools have struck twin blows for some of the older-fashioned values of the college game. And if that’s not the Big Ten way, it’s sure making the league look good just the same.

New sights set the scene for Cubs’ season opener

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com PHOENIX – Jon Lester isn’t the only newcomer Cubs teammates want to see in action during Sunday night’s season opener against the Cardinals.

The gigantic new video board in left field, which appeared to pass its first test runs in recent days, is one of the few parts of this first-year, first phase of Wrigley construction that’s expected to be ready for the opener.

“It’s going to be different, because we’ll have all this [signs, video, construction] in there, and we won’t see any fans behind there,” shortstop Starlin Castro said, referring to the lack of bleachers. “But the video board, I mean, it’s great.

You can do a lot of things with that.”

The bleachers aren’t scheduled to be fully opened until mid-June.

Meanwhile, the Cubs have video clips of players, tribute footage of Ernie Banks and

walk-up music ready to roll out Sunday, along with replays and stats on the board.

“I think it’s going to be great. It’s going to be nice to be able to see a replay, in a game,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said, touting it for both players and fans. “Wrigley still being the way Wrigley’s going to be when the bleachers are done and having an advanced video board, I think it’s going to be great.”

The Cubs promise no commercials on the board. And the traditional, manually operated green scoreboard will still be used as in the past.

“Comparing it to Fenway, I never thought that the [video] scoreboards at Fenway interfered with the ambience of the ballpark,” said manager Joe Maddon, who makes his Cubs managing debut Sunday. “I think it’s just a matter of a couple years before people get used to it and it won’t even be talked about anymore.”

OPINION EASTER PASSAGE Note to readers: On Easter Sunday, we reprint this passage from the Gospel of John, Chapter 20 (English Standard Version.)

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter came,

following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.

Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).

Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord” – and that he had said these things to her.

Even without muscles, our fingers work remarkably well Dear Dr. K: A friend told me we have no muscles in our fingers. Is that true? If so, then how do our fingers do all they do?

Dear Reader: It is true, but our hands work wonderfully anyway. That’s because even though there are no muscles in the fingers, 34 muscles in the palms and forearms make the fingers work.

And our fingers perform a remarkable variety of feats, from the practical (opening doors and typing), to conveying information (through sign language or applause), to gathering information about the environment through our sense of touch.

It’s no wonder our hands

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff have a complex design. Each has 27 bones and a corresponding number of joints (the spaces where two bones meet). Together, the bones in our hands make up nearly a quarter of the total number of bones in our body.

Of course, the muscles in our palms and forearms make the fingers work only when the brain tells them to. So many subtle and important things are done by our hands that about one-fourth of the part of the brain that controls

body movement is devoted to controlling our hands.

So how do we hold a pot, open a door or play the piano?

It begins in the brain, which sends messages down the nerves that connect to the muscles in our palms and forearms. Those messages tell specific muscles to tighten and others to relax. Three major nerves control the movements of our hands.

The muscles are all connected to tendons. Those tendons connect each muscle to specific bones in our fingers. Tendons are strong, connective tissue fibers. They are the things that finally move your fingers the way you want them to move.

When a muscle contracts,

it pulls on the tendon, which then pulls on the bone and moves it. (I’ve put an illustration showing the anatomy of our hands on my website, askdoctork.com.)

Try this: Stick out your right hand directly in front of you, with the palm facing the floor and fingers outstretched.

Now, keeping your hand straight out in front of you, make a fist. Did you feel the muscles in your forearm, just below the elbow, get tense?

Ligaments, bands of fibrous tissue that bind bones together and keep them properly lined up, also are important to the function of your hand.

Ligaments on either side of the fingers prevent them from

bending too far to the side.

Those that stretch across the palm keep your fingers from bending too far back.

You may have heard that an opposable thumb is a key anatomical difference between humans and animals. An opposable thumb means that the thumb can oppose, or touch, the index finger.

However, it is our unique ability to oppose our other fingers to the thumb – and to thereby strongly grip and grasp objects – that makes us special.

But sometimes when it seems that you are spoiled for choice, you had better be careful.

In this deal, South barrels into seven spades. He wins the diamond lead with his ace and cashes the spade king to draw the missing trump. But what should he do next?

Declarer starts with 12 top tricks: eight spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club. At first glance, it looks as though he will need the club finesse to work. But there is another potential source for an extra winner – what?

Maybe hearts will split 4-3, a 62 percent shot, and the heart eight can become a winner. However, that will require four dummy entries, three for heart ruffs in hand and one to return to dummy to cash the last heart. What are declarer’s dummy entries?

There are three obvious ones: the heart ace, spade ace and spade queen. The fourth must be the spade four. So South must take care with his spade two. He does best to put it in his pocket.

The play continues: heart to the ace, heart ruff high, spade to dummy’s queen, heart ruff high, spade to the ace, and a heart ruff high. Now declarer retrieves his spade two, overtakes it with dummy’s four, and discards his club four on the heart eight. Finally, note that if hearts break badly, the club finesse is still available. ******
