The company was supposed to go before the Morris Planning Commission on Wednesday night for a conditional permitted use permit request from the city of Morris.

The move follows the group postponing its request in March.

Attorney Gerald P. Callaghan notified Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill

Cheshareck of the change Wednesday morning.

Callaghan could not immediately be reached Wednesday for comment.

Cheshareck said if the group seeks a new location in Morris, it will have to make a presentation to the planning commission at that time.

The group was awarded a license by the state in February for a dispensary that will be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties.

Cheshareck said Greenhouse Group is listed as the property owners of 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It

Again” video store, where it was looking to locate the dispensary.

The proposed location has faced controversy because of its proximity to Forte Arts Center, a dance studio that also provides preschool programs, and Prodigy Kids Christian Home Daycare that is reportedly within 1,000 feet.

“I am thrilled the dispensary has decided to look for a different location,” Pam Simpson, owner of Forte Arts Center said of the canceled request Wednesday night.

“Protecting my students is my priority. I want people in the

community to feel safe coming to our school.”

The owner of Prodigy Kids Christian Home Daycare did not immediately return a call Wednesday.

Walnut Trails Saratoga student wins ‘Ag in the Classroom’ contest grade school takes 1st in Ag Jeopardy

GARDNER – On Friday night, Grundy County fourth-graders who participated in the Grundy County Farm Bureau’s “Ag in the Classroom” teamed up to compete in the annual Ag Jeopardy tournament where they showed off their knowledge of agriculture.

The event was held at Gardner Grade School.

This year the reigning champions were edged out by Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201’s Walnut Trails, which took first.

Minooka Elementary came in second, with the three-time champion Gardner coming in third.

This is the 25th Ag Jeopardy held in Grundy County.

It’s part of a nationwide education program that was begun in 1981 by the United States Department of Agriculture, and is the culminating event of the “Ag in the Classroom” program led by Yvonne Foss, the Grundy County Farm Bureau’s Ag literary coordinator.

MORRIS – Not every child thinks about how their food gets to their dinner plate, so Grundy County Farm Bureau has been teaching “Ag in the Classroom” to area students so they know how it gets from the farm to the table.

Each year toward the end of the school year students who have participated in “Ag in the Classroom” are challenged to create a themed poster assigned by the Farm Bureau. This year’s theme was “Thank a Farmer.”

“They are given instructions and the Farm Bureau provides the paper so they can go home and create an art piece based on the theme using what they learned in the classroom,” said Tasha Bunting, manager of Grundy County Farm Bureau.

When Gracie Ritter, a 10-year-old student at Saratoga Elementary School in Morris, was given the assignment she went home and started researching the subject.

“I thought it was great,” said her mother, Lori Ritter.

“She researched ideas about what could be used for a farmer.”

New District 54 board hears public comments

fiscal 2020 when the refunding bonds series 2005 jumps from $1.135 million to $2.069 million.

“It begins jumping drastically,” Hornsby said. “It doubles the amount of payment on this building in 2024.”

He also compared the tax rates of the district and said that District 54 has increased while Saratoga’s rates went down.

“We’re going to have a crisis unless something is done,” Hornsby said. “The new board is going to have to get up to speed quickly. They’re going to have to grab information and evaluate that information and determine what can be done because it’s a weight around your neck that is going to drown you.”

Past Superintendent Mike Wright addressed the board next.

“You know, I decided I was going to be quiet, but I’m not going to be quiet.,” Wright said. “I spent 18 years as superintendent of this school district. I spent 18 years discussing with this gentleman [Hornsby] all the things he talked about, and if you look at it and spend time with it and know anything at all about finances, you will know Saratoga is growing and Morris Elementary is not.”

He said that District 54 experienced a tremendous decrease from a major revenue source when Midwest Generation closed in 2005.

Wright said the district has the potential to be a tremendous district, and the financial issues are due to the way Morris and the state finances the district.

“Don’t criticize us for what we’ve done,” he said, adding the criticism should be on Springfield.

Shaw said Wright was correct that Springfield needs to better address school funding, but said the district still is faced with the challenge in the future years from the 2005 bond debt.

“We’ve created committees, and local bank presidents have donated their time to look at the impending increase from the bond,” she said. “Mr. Hornsby has been watching and actively participating in committees to try to help District 54.”

The school board did not address the public comments.

After the comments, the new board was sworn in, with Jerry White voted president, Bonnie Cap vice president and Joannie Johnston secretary.

The new board decided to move away from separate committees as it has historically done and will hold a committee of the whole meeting each month on the first Monday of the month, except for May when members will meet at 5 p.m. May 6.

Regular board meetings will continue on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m.

MORRIS – Nearly every seat was filled in the Morris Elementary School District 54’s board room Tuesday night for a special meeting to welcome the new board members.

Before the new board was seated, Morris resident Arthur Hornsby addressed the board during public comment, first passing out papers outlining information from the Illinois Report Card for both District 54 and Saratoga School District 60C, as well as existing debt service information and two tax bills, one for a home in District 54 and another in Saratoga.

“Through the years I’ve been in meetings here and talked about the very concept of this building, the concern I had and the concern these papers will prove,” Hornsby said, “that we have a major problem with financing due to the building and the bonds that were sold 10 years ago, I believe.”

Superintendent Teri Shaw said Wednesday multiple bond specialists, bank presidents and financial advisers who have looked at the existing debt schedule were dismayed by the 2005 bonds Hornsby referenced.

Hornsby said the paperwork shows that it cost District 54 $1,000 more a student than it does in the Saratoga district – and it has nothing to do with the cost of educating the children.

He said it is because of the cost of White Oak Elementary School.

The district took out the 1999 building bonds to construct the school at 54 White Oak Drive in Morris.

“You’re talking about $1.3 million per year cost,” he said.

Minooka trustees pass balanced budget

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The village of Minooka’s 2015-16 budget passed without a hitch Tuesday evening as trustees unanimously approved expenditures of $12.2 million and expected revenues of $12.1 million.

The difference between the two amounts, according to Finance Director John Harrington, will be covered by transfers from bond proceeds

and capital funds from this fiscal year.

“The budget is in balance,” said Trustee Dennis Martin after the meeting. “It’s a tight budget. The staff did a lot of work on this.”

Martin said the budget takes into consideration a reduction in state revenue.

Included in the coming fiscal year’s expenditures are a police squad car and a replacement mower.

Several capital projects are

being continued into the new fiscal year, including the Village Hall renovation project, which is close to 95 percent finished, according to Village Administrator Dan Duffy.

Also included are the Minooka Road bridge construction; Grainger way signs; Wildey Road tar and chip project; the McEvilly Road bike path; and the GIS mapping system.

“We narrow it down to the top 10, and then we look at how well they told the theme with what they’ve learned,” Bunting said. “The judges, which are made up of Farm Bureau staff and volunteers, talk together and decide who gets first, second and third place.”

Trustees approved an agreement with Robinson Engineering for no more than $410,000 for the village’s street

maintenance program and approved refinancing a series of general obligation bonds that Harrington said would save the village some $214,000, with a decrease in interest from 4.3 percent to 2.3 percent.

Trustees also entered into a three-year agreement with Seward Township for the township to widen and overlay a 3-mile stretch of Holt Road between Ridge and O’Brien roads.

The village’s share of the costs will not exceed $54,061 per year for three years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 4, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. Edward J. Howe, CR officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris, and on Monday, from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass at the church.

Inurnment will take place at a later date in Long Beach, California.

Born August 17, 1958 in Mexico, he was the son of Salvador and Guadalupe Hernandez-Arias. He graduated from high school in Guadalajara, Mexico, and became an American citizen in May of 1988.

He married Lynne Cheshareck, on June 10, 1988, in Morris and they lived all of their married life in Morris.

For 30 years he was employed at Jefferson Smurfit.

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Lynne; three sisters, Chela (Tonio) Cardenas, Alicia and Gina Hernandez; two brothers, Jose (Monica) Hernandez and Carlos Hernandez; numerous nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Bill (Kathleen) Cheshareck of Morris; sister-in-law, Jean Batchelor of Morris; niece, Bernadette Cheshareck of Morris; nephew, Thomas Cheshareck of Morris; and numerous friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Christopher Schaeffer on September 15, 2007; his in-laws, Willie and Betty Cheshareck.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. Salvador enjoyed hunting, watching the Chicago Blackhawks and soccer. He enjoyed spending the holidays with the Jesse Smith family and vacations with his

family out in California and Mexico.

American people need room for agreement Dana Perino, former White House press secretary for President George W. Bush and co-host of the Fox News Channels “The Five,” makes a plea for civility in her book “And the Good News Is ...”

She’s worried that “We’ve gone from being the confident leader of the free world to bickering about every living thing under the sun.”

Perino is not against arguing, mind you. “[B]eing civil means that we can argue vehemently and then either find some compromise, call it a tie or move onto something else,” she writes.

She has some solutions for the partisan rancor that is paralyzing our government and poisoning our discourse.

“If you don’t start off thinking the opposition is evil,” she writes, “but that they want to get to the same place you do, then you’re already on your way to having a more civil and productive conversation.”

In a recent phone conversation, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush told me of his desire to “figure out a way that gets beyond being pushed into a position where you sound like you’re intolerant of people who may not agree [with you],” while still standing up for your own beliefs.

One front on which Bush sees room for a more nuanced conversation is abortion.

He brings up several discussion topics: “Do you think a 13-year-old should [be able to] have an abortion without a parents consent?” he asks.

“Do you think there should be [many] more resources for adoption?” “Should there be counseling for women who are in a precarious position of having to make a decision like [abortion] that is life-changing?”

Democrats should welcome this approach. That is, if they want to make some headway on the issue and give teeth to the “safe, legal and rare” rhetoric of Bill Clinton. Specifically, in the case of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, she should be kept to her own words.

In her 2003 book, “Living History,” she writes about an encounter with Mother Teresa: “While we never agreed about abortion and birth control, Mother Teresa and I found much common ground in many other areas including the importance of adoption.

We shared the conviction adoption was a vastly better choice than abortion for unplanned or unwanted babies.”

Uniting, not dividing, is good politics and good leadership. Since 2009, Gallup has seen more Americans identify as pro-life than pro-choice. In a 2015 Marist poll, 84 percent of Americans want restrictions on abortion – including seven in 10 who identify as pro-choice.

This should be a bipartisan, civil effort, for the sake of our very civilization. Would a President Hillary Clinton honor Mother Teresa with her leadership?

Can we move beyond ideology?

Perhaps the scariest thing about humans is their profound discomfort with ambiguity, to have all the answers, and to demand that others believe exactly as they do. Ideology, it seems, is reasserting itself in a world that less than a generation ago appeared headed toward pluralism, tolerance and pragmatism, all bolstered by an unprecedented flow of free information that promised to render extremism obsolete.

Too bad it hasn’t worked out that way. Unpacking his 40-year career as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, John Burns recently concluded: “What those years bred in me, more than anything else, was an abiding revulsion for ideology, in all its guises.”

Burns worked in some of the world’s ugliest places, among them Soviet Russia, Mao’s China, Afghanistan under the Taliban, South Africa under apartheid and North Korea under the Kim dynasty. “I learned that there

is no limit to the lunacy, malice and suffering that can plague any society with a ruling ideology,” Burns reflected.

But even in Britain and America to which he has now retired, Burns detects a frightening partisan rigidity. “It can be depressing beyond words,” he wrote, “to hear the loyalists of a given political creed – whether left or right – adopt the unyielding certainties common in totalitarian states.”

We agree. Screeds portraying government as a manifest evil are especially damaging because they taint even the most sensible government solutions. With national campaigns approaching, our fervent hope is that voters have grown weary of the threadbare recitations common to both parties and will instead demand pragmatic, creative and courageous approaches that bypass the tiresome interest groups.

This campaign will be wasted if voters continue to hear (on

the right) about the dreary social issues and the virtues of never, never raising taxes, and (on the left) about candidates “who will fight for people like you.” Oh, please!

We yearn for an agenda that matches the nation’s and the state’s actual problems: Creating a wider prosperity; building an infrastructure that works; forging a coherent, sophisticated foreign policy; fostering a truly effective system for education and training; reforming the corrupt financing of campaigns, and devising serious policies on climate and energy. We long for solutions based on hard evidence, not ideological correctness. This advice from candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton offers another positive signal that should spread throughout the campaigns in both parties: “Don’t vote for anybody of any party anywhere in the country who proudly tells you they will never compromise.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The first batter of an inning can be the key, both for the offense and the defense. If the offense gets that batter on base, the odds are good that the team will score.

If the defense gets the batter out, the odds are good that they won’t.

That certainly held true Wednesday in the Southwest Prairie Conference matchup between Plainfield South and Minooka. The visiting Cougars got their leadoff batter on in each of the first five innings, and scored in four of them en route to a 6-2 win. In both of the innings that Minooka scored, the leadoff batter reached for the Indians as well.

It started early, as Plainfield South’s leadoff hitter, Austin Male, reached on an error to lead off the game.

He was forced at second on a grounder by the next hitter, Nick Mayerhofer, but Mayerhofer then stole second and came around to score on a single by Marco Escobar. Escobar later scored on an error on a ball hit by Konnor Ash to make it 2-0.

In the second inning, South’s Tyler Dickey led off with a double to left-center, stole third and came home on a two-out RBI single by Mayerhofer, who promptly stole second, but was left stranded.

Marco Melgoza then led off the third for the Cougars (12-7, 5-6) with a single and stole second.

Walks to Gabe Wair and Ash loaded the bases and Minooka replaced starter Brad Van Asdlen with Tyler Paulsen on the mound. Marcus Stewart greeted Paulsen with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Melgoza for a 4-0 lead. Paulsen then got Dickey to line out to Jake Null at second, and Ash was doubled off first to end the inning.

“The first out of an inning is a big out, whether you are hitting or in the field,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said.

“We weren’t able to get our leadoff guys on, and they were.

That was a big difference.”

the Indians couldn’t bring him around.

In the bottom of the seventh, Paulsen was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and Block ran for him. A wild pitch sent Block to second, and a grounder to second by Vesper moved him to third. After Thompson walked, Zack Earls singled to right to score Block.

An out later, Hayden Laczynski singled to left to load the bases, putting the tying run at the plate. Jake Null grounded to first to end the game.

“The kids showed some heart at the end,” Petrovic said. “We just didn’t have enough runners on early in the game to get excited. Plainfield South did a good job. Their pitcher threw strikes and their defense made all the plays.

“We had some trouble early getting ahead in the count.

But, Brad Van Asdlen has been terrific for us all year. Everyone is entitled to an off-game and this was his. It’s hard in varsity baseball to come back from a 6-0 deficit.”

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler didn’t like the word “soft” when a question about the Bulls’ defense was brought up Wednesday.

“Non-aggressive, inconsistent,” Butler said. “There’s a lot of words besides ‘soft.’ ” Whatever the adjective, Bucks guards Michael Carter-Williams and Khris Middleton aren’t intimidated. That

was evident by the way they went right at the Bulls on Monday to force Game 6 on Thursday. Butler is taking it personally.

He should. He’s supposed to be the stopper on one of the premier defenses in the NBA. And although Butler has been that for most of the season, he isn’t thrilled with the defense’s overall inconsistency.

Butler’s solution: Take the lead. He believes the defense should start with him. “The

numbers say I’ve scored the ball pretty well this year,” he said. “I think I get stuck on that at times, to prove I can play on the offensive end instead of doing what got me to this point where I could prove I could play on the offensive end, which is defense.

“I really do have to get back to it. I’m not saying it because the cameras are on me right now. I’m saying it because that’s what it’ll take to win.

Besides Pau Gasol, Butler has been the most consistent Bulls starter since the beginning of the season. Unlike Derrick Rose, Butler isn’t looking to ease into games.

Discarding at the bridge table can add years to your life, especially when facing a predicament like East’s in this deal. What should he do?

East seems to be squeezed in three suits. He needs to remember to keep equal length with the dummy. East must discard two spades and hope that his partner can hold the suit. Note that if East discards either a heart or a diamond, declarer gets four tricks in that suit and nine in all.

Life of contentment doesn’t seem normal for 45-year-old Dear Abby: I’m 45, employed and earn plenty of money. I’m in a great relationship, my kids and grandkids are healthy and happy, and my parents are alive and well. I enjoy the small things in life, fishing, reading, the beach, mini vacations, bowling, etc. I raise funds to feed the homeless.

So what’s my problem, you ask? Abby, I’m not really sure what my purpose is in life or if the way my life is, is normal.

I feel content – even happy at times – but I’m troubled because it seems a lot of people do the exact opposite of what I am doing and they all have a purpose. Some of them are going to school, raising kids, having relationship problems, money issues, etc. They seem

Count your blessings. You hold a job, have a family I presume you regularly interact with, have a great relationship, hobbies you enjoy and contribute to those who have less than you. I would say you are productive and successful.

However, if you think you need to do more, then it’s possible you do. Take some time, decide what it is and reallocate your time if you feel you need something more to fulfill you.

But please stop measuring yourself by anyone else’s yardstick because people who do are rarely happy.

Dear Abby: I fell in love with “Alex” during my last year of college. We had known each other for 18 months. One month before our wedding, he broke up with me. He says I was verbally abusive.

I admit I had anger issues.

I had to plan most of the wedding alone because we were four hours apart. When we argued, he would say one thing and then something different

later. He also would tell his mom stuff about me and our relationship I considered private. After the breakup, I found out he lied to me about his religion.

I had a hard time with the breakup. I tried hard to reconcile or find solutions, but he rejected all of them. Now he’s blaming me and throwing things in my face.

I am heartbroken and depressed. I don’t know if I should be mad at him for the lies and the heartache he has caused me, or mad at myself for messing up. I have lost my confidence and self-esteem.

What do I do? – Still In Love Dear Still In Love: Take off the rose-colored glasses for a moment and consider what

the reality of a marriage to Alex would have been like.

You would have had a mama’s boy for a husband, one you couldn’t count on to tell the truth and who blamed you for anything that went wrong.

Don’t you realize you dodged a bullet? If things had turned out differently, you’d be writing me as an unhappy wife, probably with children.

Let it go, get help for your anger issues and don’t waste more time brooding. There are times it is better we don’t get the things we wish for, and this may be one of them.
