Susan R. McNabb, age 53, of Morris, passed away early Thursday morning, April 2, 2015 at Lakewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Plainfield with her family by her side. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at New Community Church, 706 E. Washington St., in Morris with Rev. Kevin Yandell officiating. Interment will follow in Saratoga Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church.

Born July 26, 1961 in Morris, she was the daughter of Philip and Shirley (Rehberg) Zink. She graduated from Morris Community High School with the class of 1978. Susan married Scott McNabb on October 19, 1979 at the First Baptist church in Morris.

They lived all of their married life in Morris. For 10 years she was employed as program assistant for special education at Minooka Grade School and for over 17 years was the community living director at the Narvick House.

Survivors include her loving husband of 35 years, Scott; two children, Jeremy (Jen) McNabb and Jackie (Andy) Stoltz both of Morris;

four grandchildren, Grace and Lane McNabb and Jackson and Grant Stoltz; her father and step mother, Philip and Judy Zink; one sister, JoEllyn (Brian) Johnson of Seneca; one brother, Gary (Wanda) Zink of Florida; three nephews, Tom(Robyn) Wills, Tim (Ashley) Wills and Travis (Molly) Wills all of Morris; one niece, Amber Bostick of Decatur; eight great nieces and great nephews; one aunt, Beverly Rehberg of Lisbon; one uncle, Ron Rehberg of Morris.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Shirley on May 12, 2012; and uncle, Bill Rehberg on November 4, 2011.

She was a member of the New Community Church, served on the board of Special Connections for Grundy County and past president of Women’s Bowling Association.

She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her kids and grandchildren.

One of her last special memories was the family trip to Hawaii.

Memorials may be given to the New Community Church or Illinois Valley Industries.

Born: Nov. 12, 1940; in Gardner, IL Died: March 31, 2015; in Joliet, IL Rebecca Leigh Sowers “Becky” Age 74, and a lifelong resident of Gardner, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born November 12, 1940, in Gardner, Rebecca Leigh was a daughter of the late John “Frank” and Josephine (Kroll) Sowers. She was raised and educated in Gardner, and worked for Sowers Grocery Store in Gardner for many years.

Becky later held employment with Wescom, before going to work at the Fox Developmental Center in Dwight, where she retired as a Mental Health Technician.

She was an active member of Braceville United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Gardner American Legion Auxiliary, Gardner Lions Club and the 13 Run Club. Becky enjoyed counted cross stitch needle work, bowled on a league in years past, and took pleasure in playing bingo.

Survivors include one sister, Marsha Sowers of Gardner; and one sister-in-law, Sandy Sowers of South Wilmington; as well as many nieces and nephews. Becky was preceded in death by her parents;

Coal City police search a Dodge Ram truck Wednesday night at TD Pete’s Shell in Coal City. The truck was driven by a gunshot victim and crashed into another vehicle at the gas station. Police are searching for a suspect and called the incident isolated.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – In the typically quiet town of Coal City, the peace was shattered shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday as gunshots rang out.

The town of slightly more than 5,500 people hasn’t had a shooting since 2006.

“It’s a rarity here to have anything like this in Grundy County, let alone Coal City,” Sgt. Tom Logan with the Coal City Police Department said Thursday morning.

Authorities responded at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday after numerous residents reported hearing shots fired near the Shell gas station at 725 E. Division St. Once they were on the scene, officers found Adam Fierro, 43 in a silver Dodge Ram bleeding from gunshot wounds to his body. Fierro is the owner of Horse Shoe Transportation Company of Braidwood, according to a news release from Coal City police received Thursday night.

Fierro was being dropped off at the gas station to retrieve his vehicle by an employee. The employee then left the gas station without witnessing the shooting.

During an altercation, Fierro was allegedly shot at several times by the suspect, who is not yet being named, but is an ex-employee at Horseshoe, according to the release.

“The Coal City Police Department is continuing to withhold the name of the suspect due to the possibility of tainting the ongoing investigation,” the release states.

Fierro then drove from the scene and entered the north side of the gas station where he struck an unoccupied vehicle. The suspect left the scene in a vehicle before police arrival.

Logan said the vehicle had bullet holes in numerous locations and that windows were shot out.

Thursday afternoon Coal City police obtained a search warrant for the phone belonging to the victim that was seized at the scene. Video surveillance also is being attained from local businesses.

“We’ve received the warrant for the phone and the technicians are working to

unlock the technology to get the records,” Logan said.

“Once we obtain that information, we will probably seek a warrant for the suspect.”

Authorities called the shooting an isolated incident.

Police on Thursday worked to locate the suspect at several locations outside of Grundy County and continue to follow up on leads.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School District 101 will see at least two new Board of Education members after the April 7 election.

Three seats are available, one of which has to be filled by an unincorporated-area candidate. In addition to Judith A. Roth’s bid for re-election, two other spots were created by the departures of Jim Paulson and Eric Monson. Paulson was elected in 2009, while Monson was elected in 2011.

At least 30 percent of the taxable property within the district is in the unincorporated territory. Therefore, of the three unincorporated-area candidates running, at least one will be elected. Three incorporated-area candidates also are running.

“My wife and I moved to Morris 17 years ago. My older Scot son currently Hastings attends District 101, and my younger son will attend District 101 next year.

I served five years on the District 54 school board. I was on the finance and technology committees. I have attended several IASB training classes including Open Meetings, Leading Leaders and Basics of Governance.”

Why are you running?

“I was always involved with the boys’ activities such as Scouts and sports. As they got older I thought it was important to get involved with their most important activity – their education. I have

“I am running for the school board because I want to be involved in the choices and decisions regarding the education my children receive. As a parent of two teens, I look at not only my children but their friends and classmates and wonder if they have been prepared for the next step of their lives, be it entering the workforce or continuing with their education. I want to be able to answer that with a firm ‘Yes.’ ”

What changes/improvements do you plan to make for District 101?

“The improvements I hope to make would be in providing the teachers with the tools and training they need to equip the students with the skills to be successful after high school.

“This doesn’t necessarily mean spending large sums of money, but it does mean taking inventory of the skills and equipment we currently have and making sure we are up-to-date with our teaching methods and identifying any weaknesses.

“One area I would like to evaluate is computer and technology offerings, as I feel these skills will benefit all students no matter their life path.”

Candidates face off at Channahon forum 17 of 36 Channahon and Minooka hopefuls participate in public event

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The candidates who Channahon and Minooka residents will vote for in the April 7 consolidated election gathered Wednesday evening at Channahon Lanes for a “Meet the Candidates” public forum.

The event was organized by the Three Rivers Business Alliance and the Channahon Economic Development Corporation to give those running for boards in the local schools, villages, library, park district and junior college a chance to introduce themselves to voters and to lay out agendas for their terms.

Tom Powell, vice chairman of Three Rivers Business Alliance and owner of Powell Landscaping, said this is the second election forum the group has organized. The first was in October in preparation for the November 2014 election.

“We saw a void in our community, as far as any kind of public forum,” Powell said.

“We thought it was important for people to be able to hear from their candidates, so we thought, remaining a neutral party, we would host the event.”

Powell said it is of vital importance for people to know their candidates and to vote.

This election is especially important, he said, as the races for Minooka Community High School District 111, Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201, Three Rivers Library District and Joliet Junior College’s board are contested elections, with more candidates running than open seats available.

“These people work for you,” he said. “An informed voter is a good voter.”

Also participating were several running for uncontested positions on the Channahon District 17 school board; for Minooka and Channahon village trustees, Channahon village president and Channahon village clerk; and for positions

on the Channahon Park District commission.

About 60 residents attended, and 17 candidates out of the 36 running participated.

Channahon residents Gerry and Jean Manley were there to get a good feel for the candidates.

“I want to hear what they have to say,” Gerry Manley said.

He said his biggest issue was the increase in truck traffic in town and the potential for more.

Of the six Minooka Community High School Board candidates, only Lori Lakota and Lawrence Troutman participated. Lakota said with her degree in business administration and her job as a substitute teacher, she would make a good school board member.

Her goal, she said, would be to make the best decisions possible for the community as a whole.

Troutman said he has been in public service most of his adult life, including as a Will County Board member. He is a former bus driver for the high school district and said Jeanne Millsap for Shaw Media

Of the six candidates running for Minooka grade school district, Alan Skwarczynski participated. A former teacher and principal, Skwarczynski said his strengths are curriculum, school finances, operations and working with teachers, students and parents. His agenda, he said, would be to “afford our children with an outstanding education.”

And as a taxpayer, Skwarczynski said he will be sensitive to the concerns of taxpayers with prudent use of the district’s limited financial resources.

“Different types of classroom electives or extracurricular programs for all children. We serve a diverse population of students. Whether in academic levels or general interest. I would like to look toward creating more student clubs or organizations that develop our kids’ minds and challenge critical thinking. Offer all students greater enrichment in working with inter-generational programs and volunteering.

We have so many residents in our community who may not have children or grandchildren within the district, but would love to offer input or volunteer. I would like to be able to embrace that and have our children embrace that as well.

McEvilly-Reed, a nurse and former recipient of the Channahon Amos Hayse Citizen of the Year award, said the libraries are a community anchor, have many successful programs and are good stewards of local history.

McSteen said when her children were growing up, they went “library-hopping,” eventually visiting every Will County library. Libraries are an important part of having an educated and literate popula-

tion, she added.

Two of the six JJC candidates participated in the forum: Susan Marie Klen and Maureen Flanagan Broderick.

Klen said as a financial analyst, she has helped the district cut millions of dollars during the last three years without affecting program courses.

Broderick said as a 12-year school board member in New Lenox, she has been a taxpayers’ advocate, uncovering some $125,000 worth of spending that was never approved by the board.

Compromise deserves applause Wonder of wonders: House Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi compromised on crucial health care legislation last week for the good of all Americans, and the deal actually passed by a resounding 392-37 vote.

The Senate still needs to ratify the bill ending a two-decade fight over the Medicare formula for paying doctors and extending the children’s health insurance program for two years. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell couldn’t rally his troops to quick action, but we’re hopeful they’ll succeed after a two-week recess.

So let’s savor the moment: “I hope it will be a model of things to come,” Pelosi said.

“This is what we can accomplish when we focus on finding common ground,” Boehner said.

And from President Barack Obama: “This is how Congress is supposed to

work.”

Some Republicans senators say the $144 billion program is too expensive. Some Democrats want a longer extension of the children’s health care program. Sounds like a compromise to us. If Boehner and Pelosi can produce a strong consensus in their bitterly divided house, surely McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid can rally their troops to concur.

Republicans have objected to the Medicare fee system for years because it provides incentives for doctors to do more work and order more procedures. Boehner essentially proposed rewarding doctors for the quality of their work rather than the quantity. What a coincidence. This is precisely the spirit of Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Doctors face a 21 percent cut in Medicare fees if Congress fails to act by April 21.

izens’ access to health care.

The House bill provides for 0.5 percent rate increases for the next four years – hardly a windfall – with a more sustainable long-term payment schedule.

Interestingly, it was bipartisan leadership that created SCHIP for low-income families in 1997. Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and Massachusetts Democrat Ted Kennedy recognized that children covered by health insurance were demonstrably healthier than uninsured kids, and as a consequence they were more likely to succeed. Boehner and Pelosi may have revived that tradition of bipartisanship on big issues.

The Senate never really sank to the no-compromise-ever depths of the House in the wake of Obama’s election, so we’re hopeful that Reid and McConnell will grasp this opportunity to vindicate all of Congress by actually getting something done.

All pastors know that there are legions of “Easter Christians” who make it their tradition to dress up once a year and touch base with God. What can pastors do? Not much, said the late, great church-management guru Lyle Schaller, while discussing these red-letter days on the calendar. Rather than worrying about that Easter crowd, he urged church leaders to look for new faces at Christmas.

Research he was reading said Christmas was when “people are in pain and may walk through your doors after years on the outside,” he said in a mid-1980s interview.

Maybe they don’t know, after a divorce, what to do with their kids on Christmas Eve. Maybe Christmas once had great meaning, but that got lost somehow. The big question: Would church regulars welcome these people?

“Most congregations say they want to reach out to new people, but don’t act like it,” Schaller said. Instead, church people see days like Easter and Christmas as “intimate, family affairs” for the people who are already there, he said sadly. “They don’t want to dilute the mood with strangers.”

It was classic Schaller advice, the kind he offered to thousands of congregations during his decades as a physician willing to work with bodies of believers – if they were willing to admit they had problems. Ask him about Easter and he would talk about Christmas, if his research pointed him in that direction.

Schaller died March 18 in Oklahoma City at the age of 91. As a United Methodist, he was known for his work with America’s older, declining mainline churches, but he was

VIEWS Terry Mattingly also popular in evangelical megachurches. Between his 55 books – such as “The Change Agent” and “The Ice Cube is Melting” – and countless articles, he published about 3 million words.

A master of edgy sound bites, Schaller had a seminary degree as well as a graduate degree in city planning, and he constantly connected these two sides of his intellect. The result was a kind of “sanctified pragmatism,” said the Rev. Harold Bales, who for years led what Southerners call “tall steeple” United Methodist churches. Bales also worked on his denomination’s General Boards of Evangelism and Discipleship – key issues for Schaller.

Anyone who knew Schaller knew that he constantly asked leaders to face one essential question: “What year is it?”

Ironically, Schaller became known as a church fix-it man during an era in which America’s mainline flocks endured staggering losses in their pews. His own United Methodist Church now has less than 7.3 million members, a decline of more than one-third since its glory days in the 1960s.

Truth is, some people are afraid of growth and change.

His goal, he told me, was to find leaders who would face tough questions and then not “go into denial” when he proposed answers.

Morris girls cruise to blowout win

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – The Morris girls soccer team is on a roll.

On Thursday, the Redskins (4-0) kept their record unblemished as they stormed past Wilmington, 9-0. This came a day after Morris defeated Streator, 6-2.

It should be noted that, in the past two games, Morris has played short-handed.

Because of spring break and college vists, the Redskins have been without some starters, forcing players to move around and fill positions they are not accustomed to playing. In some cases, younger players had to step in and play roles normally played by upperclassmen.

“We were able to spread the ball around a lot,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said.

“We were missing a lot of girls the last two games, but a lot of the younger girls came in and picked up the pace.”

For the second straight game, junior captain Amanda Grant scored a hat trick for the Redskins, who visit Princeton on Monday. Grant scored the game’s first goal at the 35:40 mark, off an assist from Alexa Rain.

Rain scored the second goal on a rebound off a corner kick with 30:26 to play in the first half. With 27:05 to play, Grant scored again with another assist from Rain. With 17:29 left, freshman Mya Shannon scored, with the assist going to Casi Valdez.

More than 10 minutes passed before Morris scored again. Mikaela Marino made a nice crossing pass with 7:09 left in the first half, and freshman Amanda Schmidt was able to kick it from in front of the net. Grant capped her hat trick with 5:43 to play, scoring unassisted. Sophomore Kelly Monk made it 7-0 with 1:54 to play in the first half, off an assist from senior captain Emily Burling.

“Dorissa made some nice crosses,” Porter said. “She

started the game on defense, but we had to move everyone around a lot. Casi Valdez was playing a different spot than usual, but she did a real nice job today, too. Mya Shannon controlled the middle very well, and Amanda Grant had

another real nice game.

“Defensively, Grace Tibbott did a good job of getting the ball back to the offense. She was our junior back there, and we had a lot of young players back there with her. I thought Amanda Schmidt did a real

nice job of possessing the ball and she was real aggressive.

“This was a nice game for us to get the younger kids some varsity time. We were just trying to make things work with so many girls gone, and everyone did a real nice job.”

STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – The Morris girls soccer team beat Streator, 6-2, on Wednesday to improve its record to 3-0. The Redskins have outscored their opponents 16-2 in their three wins.

Addison Polite scored the first goal for Morris, and the second came from Dorissa Gutierrez, off an assist by Amanda Grant. That was it in the first half as Morris held a 2-0 halftime lead.

Grant started the second half with a goal, off an assist from Emily Burling. Burling then scored to make it 4-0, getting an assist by Kelly Monk.

Grant then scored again, with the assist going to Bryn Taylor.

Grant completed a hat trick and capped the Morris scoring when she found the back of the net off an assist from Polite.

The game was 6-0 until the final 15 minutes of play. Junior Brooklyn Enger played 65 minutes of the game allowing no goals.

Sophomore Ezzy Cruz came in as a back up and ended up leaving the game with an injury, as she was kicked in the forehead.

“Overall, we had a lot of varsity players gone due to spring break and college visits,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said. “We relied a lot on the younger girls to step it up and get us a win. A lot of our younger players got some quality minutes, especially on defense.”

Minooka falls to Plainfield South

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Chris Brolley has liked most of what he’s seen from his Minooka girls soccer team during the early part of the schedule.

After posting three straight shutouts to kick things off, the Indians dropped a tough loss at Joliet Catholic Academy on Tuesday for their initial defeat.

But Brolley didn’t receive the same type of performance in his squad’s Southwest Prairie Conference opener with Plainfield South on Thursday, and that spelled trouble.

Minooka missed out on a couple of chances to grab the early advantage and couldn’t respond once the Cougars connected. South scored once before the break and twice more in the final half to capture a 3-0 victory.

“We played really well on Tuesday and lost a tough one, and I guess we had a hard time getting excited about coming

The Indians (3-2, 0-1) had the first good opportunity shortly before the opening half’s midpoint. Julianna Scarcelli got free on the wing, which brought keeper Saman-

tha Hlavac out of the net, but her shot attempt toward the empty goal was cleared by Peyton Marmoll.

In the 25th minute, Martina Kotrba sent in a liner that Hlavac punched away and a minute later, Kotrba threatened again with a free kick, which was also thwarted.

South (2-1-1, 1-0) finally mounted its first good threat a few minutes later when Isabel Cerda fired in an attempt from the side that keeper Lily Benig deflected away.

But there wasn’t much the Indians keeper could do in the 32nd minute when Lindsey Bond sent a cross to Taylor Metcaf, who put in a closerange try to put South up for good.

The Cougars made it clear from the outset of the second half it was only getting started as Angie Corcoran started things with a short liner that was punched away.

A bit later, Miranda Nirchi drove toward the net and Benig came out for the deflection.

In the action that followed, she also knocked a short try away

But right after that, a loose ball found its way to Cerda, who put in a short shot to make it 2-0 in the 45th minute.

South kept the pressure up as Lexus Rose was denied first by the Indians keeper and a bit later by defender Tara Pentoney.

Minooka had a chance to connect in the 52nd minute when Hailey Arlis got free and Hlavac came out to meet her.

But her long-range effort went just wide of the mark.

The visitors closed the scoring in the 54th minute when Corcoran found Bond, who placed an attempt into the opposite side of the net.

Bears part ways with 14-year vet Garza

The overhauling of the Bears’ roster continued Thursday, when center Roberto Garza was informed by the club he won’t be returning for an 11th season, the Chicago Tribune first reported. Garza, 36, received a one-year extension in Week 17, the final contract handed out by former general manager Phil Emery.

“Thank you to the Chicago Bears and Bears fan base for an incredible ten years,” Garza posted on his Twitter and Instagram. In a news release, Bears GM Ryan Pace thanked Garza for his time with the Bears.

“We have a great deal of respect for what Roberto has brought to the Bears over the last 10 years,” Pace said in the release. “He has been a great player, teammate and leader. We wish Roberto and his family the very best as he continues his career.”

Early spring can still provide good fishing The past few days have seen a flurry of boats filling up at gas stations, rippling across the water and being trailered along the road. I have fished three different bodies of water in three days.

It has been so nice to feel the sun and cast a line.

The key to fishing early in the spring is to find the warmest water that you can. On Monday, I hit one of our local strip mine lakes. The surface temperature on the main lake hovered right at 42 degrees.

That is cold, for sure.

On Tuesday, I drove an hour west and launched at the Hennepin Canal. The shallow, dirty, water in this canal system was at 51 degrees.

On Wednesday I floated the DuPage River. It was in the upper 40s.

Each of these bodies of water is in what we would call early spring fishing

conditions. The temperatures are still a distance from the spawning range and the fishing can be tough. So what can an angler do to put the odds in their favor?

As I mentioned earlier, I always like to find the warmest water I can. On the strip mine lake, the main body of water was 42, but I was able to find several shallow bays with long stretches of a south-facing shoreline. In these areas, the water temperature increased to 45 degrees.

I know that doesn’t seem like much, but believe me, a three-degree swing can make a huge difference in activity.

If these warmer areas are close to main lake dropoffs, then you are definitely in a good location.

As the spring days linger on, the fish will move from their deeper haunts and move into the warmer, shallower

On a nice sunny day, you may even see fish just cruising the shallows. These fish traditionally are difficult to target and usually are skittish. I always prefer to back off the shallow water and dredge the depths leading to the warmer water.

My brother found such a place on one of his local lakes several years ago in Iowa.

The ice had recently come out and he positioned his boat on a main lake point that led to a shallow and warmer bay.

He set up a Carolina Rig and probed the length of the point.

At the end of it, in about 20 feet of water, he hit the honey hole.

The largemouth were stacked like cordwood on the end of this point. Throughout the day, a few of them would head to that warmer water, but the bulk of the fish hung out on that point. They just sat there, staging for their turn to move up. He caught one fish after another for quite some time. He was so excited he had to call me immediately.

If you are fishing a river system, especially a shallower river system, then you are going to want to target the deeper wintering holes.

Many small rivers have stretches where the water drops off and the current slows. These areas hold vast numbers of fish during the cold weather months. When the water starts to warm, these are the holes that the fish are going to move out of and spread out.

There are a variety of lures

that work well this time of year, but I really favor throwing something that can cover the water column from top-tobottom. I almost always use a jig for this reason. I can swim it, bounce it, or even drag it along the bottom, depending on the cover and bottom composition.

Once I locate an area that has fish, I will sit on it for some time. The fish are grouped up, waiting to move to shallows. You may do a lot of hunting with lots of fruitless casts, but stick with it.

When you find the areas the fish are using, your luck will change in a heartbeat.

Good luck this early spring. Every day of stable, warmer, weather will make things even better. Tight lines.

In today’s deal, South pushes into six hearts. West leads the spade 10 to South’s ace. How should declarer continue?

In the auction, South’s two-heart rebid was forcing, since North’s two-over-one response guaranteed a rebid. When South heard about respectable heart support, he plunged into Blackwood. He upgraded for his secondary club fit.

If trumps are 2-2, there will be no problems. If they are 4-0, the contract has no chance. But what if they are 3-1? Then it looks as if declarer would need the club finesse to work. However, there is another possibility.

South cashes his heart ace, plays a diamond to dummy’s ace, ruffs a diamond in his hand, leads a heart to dummy’s king (getting the bad news), and ruffs the last diamond.

Then declarer plays off his other two spade winners.

With his preparations complete, South exits with a trump, giving East the lead.

Here, East has only clubs left in his hand, so must play away from his queen into dummy’s ace-jack.

Note, though, that if East still has a spade or diamond in his hand, declarer would ruff and take the club finesse. ******

Hungry therapist should plan ahead for snack Dear Abby: We have a daughter with severe developmental disabilities. Thankfully, she receives 40-plus hours of inhome therapy a week, which is covered by insurance.

Her first therapist arrives at 7:30 a.m. and leaves at 11:30 a.m. Some days, she will pick up something to eat on the way. Most days, I suspect she hasn’t eaten breakfast.

About once a week she’ll call out for me, asking for a snack – usually a breakfast sandwich – which I make for her. Last week, she asked for some chocolate-covered nuts I had offered her once. I told her we had eaten them. I finally put out a bowl of old hard candy to stop her from asking.

She has been eating it for a

Well, a week ago I caught them doing drugs, so I called the cops. They were arrested that night. They now are asking to come back. I refuse to allow it because I have an 11-year-old at home with me

and another 18-year-old who I want to keep away from this kind of influence.

My son keeps texting me and trying to guilt me into changing my mind because he got his fiancée pregnant.

Where I live it gets very cold, but I need to show my other children it’s not OK to do drugs.

Am I doing the right thing by not letting them come back, or am I a heartless mother like he says? – Mom Of Tough Love Dear Mom: Regardless of what your son says, you are not heartless. You took him in with certain conditions. He and his girlfriend abused your trust, and you handled the situation wisely.

If the girl is really pregnant,

she should not be using drugs.

If she’s hooked on something, she needs to get into a rehabilitation program ASAP. If she has parents, perhaps they will take her in. But you have done your part, and if you allow your son and his girlfriend to stay with you, they will continue to break your rules and you’ll wind up responsible for them and the baby – or two or three. I advise against it.
