By MIKE MALLORY MORRIS – Some residents near the Lisbon Road bridge over Interstate 80 had difficulty sleeping late Monday through early Tuesday, and it may continue.

The Illinois Department of Transportation started demolition of the bridge Monday night, part of a $3 million reconstruction project that began earlier this month.

“It was awful,” resident Kathy Dillard said. “My husband and I didn’t sleep at all.

I was tossing and turning all night.”

Dillard’s backyard faces what remains of the bridge that started being demolished Tuesday night. Since 30-foot trees were cut down, there’s a view of the bridge. Dillard said she had no idea the destruction was going to happen at night.

“The interstate is blocked off during the day anyway,” she said. “Why can’t they do it then?”

Demolition is anticipated to take three nights, which would make it complete by Friday morning.

IDOT construction field engineer Joe Spika said he’s heard no complaints from local residents. Spika said the first night the crew did saw cutting and initial work to facilitate the removal of beams.

“We’ll begin with the south portion and proceed to the center Wednesday night and the north end Thursday night, if all goes well,” Spika said. “We hope to be done Thursday.

Thursday (PM hours) – I-80 eastbound (use detour at Seneca Exit 105) and I-80 westbound (reduced to one lane; use crossovers).

An additional night of lane closures may be needed to complete the removal, according to the news release.

The project was awarded to D Construction of Coal City and includes replacement of the bridge. The new structure will feature lanes 15 feet wide and a sidewalk on one side to alleviate safety concerns for both pedestrians and drivers.

The project has an estimated completion date of late November.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick, who lives in the area, said he didn’t hear anything, but admitted he does sleep like a rock.

Four others at different residences in the neighborhood said they were aware of the overnight construction, but it hasn’t disrupted their sleep yet.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A gunshot, a missing wife, a crystal dropped in a toilet, a politician running for state senate and the deputy mayor of New York with a gunshot wound to his earlobe sounds more like a modern-day television drama than the theatrical farce it is.

Theatergoers who attend the Morris Theatre Guild production of Neil Simon’s “Rumors” will be able to watch and laugh at the absurdity of the situations that arise from rumors, and the need to protect a politician.

“This is farce. Timing is everything,” said Joe Baima of Marseilles, who plays Lenny Ganz.

The play is being directed by first-time Morris Theatre Guild director Joe Ennenbach of LaSalle, who joined the list of directors with a history of directing productions in Ottawa and Streator.

“I like to direct as much as I like to act,” he said. “I’ve directed in LaSalle-Peru and Streator and now I’m venturing into Grundy County.”

He said directing a play like “Rumors” is a challenge. The play, which was designed for a

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Attendees at the Grundy Economic Development Council Legislative Breakfast on Monday heard responses from Illinois Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, about the low-carbon bill, also called the Exelon Bill.

Rezin is the minority spokeswoman on the Energy Committee and said without the bill there are three nuclear plants at risk of closing because of low energy costs.

“We are educating people on why it’s important to have a base load and how it keeps the prices down,” Rezin said in her opening remarks. “We will continue to do what we can to provide a good energy climate.”

She said the three plants at risk of closing are Clinton, Byron and Cordova, not the three plants located in her district.

But she has seen first-hand the benefit of having the plants, including labor and property tax contributions.

Bob Osgood, site communications manager for the Dresden Generating Station, said Tuesday that Exelon would like consideration for creating carbon-free power that would help level the playing field.

“Wind energy gets subsidies,” he said. “It’s a fine form of energy, but we also produce energy without carbon and we don’t get any consideration or subsidy.”

“The Low Carbon Portfolio Standard legislation includes consumer protections that limit the consumer impact to a 2.015 percent annual increase over 2009 retail prices,” Osgood said. “This increase would be $2 per month for the average Illinois residential customer.”

Osgood said the problem with the three plants at risk of closing is the plants aren’t making a profit, and like many businesses, they can’t justify subsidizing those plants with

the profits of other plants.

“The bill would help make them profitable,” he said.

Rezin said Exelon will take 5,000 megawatts offline if it closes the three nuclear facilities, which is a tremendous amount of power. “We would have to replace it,” Rezin said.

“The question is, with what?”

Osgood said the power would be replaced, and one of the options for replacement would be coal power, which would put carbon into the environment.

Rezin said one of the other concerns is from other energy producers who don’t want nuclear to have an unfair advantage. She said there are several other energy bills they are considering. “We are walking this big piece of legislation forward very slowly to make sure we understand it,” Rezin said.

Cloonen said while she doesn’t have any nuclear facilities in her district, she has several large industries who need reliable and consistent power.

“Whatever we come up with, we will have everyone at the table,” Cloonen said. “Nuclear is where it is at right now, so that is where we stand.”

The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a

phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online.

There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device.

Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

District 101 board reorganized; Best re-elected

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The next phase of Morris Community High School District 101’s board leadership is in place.

New members were sworn in, former members were honored and officers were elected Monday night at the District 101 board reorganization meeting. Dennis Best was re-elected as board president with a 7-0 vote, District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said Tuesday. Steve Stangland edged out Judie Roth in a 4-3 vote for vice president.

“I’m glad to do it,” Stangland said Tuesday. “Mr. Best does a real nice job and I’m glad to now help him out.”

There are no hard feelings from Roth. “It’s always a close vote for vice president,” Roth said Tuesday. “I don’t have aspirations to be president or vice president, it’s just how things worked out.”

Roth was re-elected secretary of the board. Both Roth and Stangland referenced the changes in administration in the coming years. Halloran’s contract carries him to retire-

Lynn Vermillion and Scot Hastings were sworn in as new members, along with the incumbent Roth.

“I know that Scot [Hastings] has a background with technology, which is one of the issues we’re facing in the district,” Roth said. “I know Lynn [Vermillion] has plenty to offer too.”

Eric Monson and Jim Paulson were recognized for their 10 combined years of board membership. Monson was elected in 2009 and served a two-year and four-year term.

Paulson served from 2011 to 2015. Monson wasn’t present Monday.

“We appreciate their 10 years of service,” Halloran said.

Monson and Paulson were given plaques commemorating their time, and a lifetime pass to school events, a traditional gesture for District 101 departing board members, Halloran said.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Out with the old and in with the new seemed to be the theme of the night at the Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C Board of Education meeting Monday.

Two new members, John Darlington and Mike Wright, along with re-elected board member Scott Thorson, were sworn in.

Exiting board president Kathleen Cheshareck and board member Scott Heron were recognized for their service.

The new board then voted on its new officers. Mark Overbeck moved from the vice president position to the president’s position. Anne McDonnell was named vice president.

New schedule

Principal Joe Zweeres presented the new 2015-16 school calendar.

The basic schedule will stay the same in kindergarten through fifth grade, but the old eight-period school days are out at the junior high as a new modified block schedule will take its place.

Zweeres said the existing schedule was chopped up and included two study halls a day, leading to short class times and making it difficult for classes like science and social studies to get everything accomplished in the time allotted.

It also left some students struggle to complete their homework.

“We are proposing to have longer blocks of class time, with our science, social studies and physical education rotating on an every-other-day schedule,” Zweeres said.

Zweeres said the students will still receive math, reading and language arts every day, with combining reading and language arts.

The students also will be allowed to choose from new exploratory classes.

The interventions program now will be able to have its own set block, so its students

don’t miss any core classes.

Superintendent Kathy Perry said staff have been working with Plainfield schools to learn pros and cons of this block scheduling.

“The class structure isn’t just a lecture and homework situation, where the child is sent home to do the work, because that’s difficult if the child doesn’t understand the work.

“These longer class times will allow the teachers to work with the students,” Perry said.

New board member Darlington was in favor of this block system.

“This is a good system where teachers can work with the kids, instead of traditionally when the kids take work home and say, ‘Hey dad, can you help me with math,’ and they have to look up how to do it on the Internet. These kids can get longer instruction and teachers can work alongside the kids who aren’t understanding as much,” Darlington said.

Thorson raised the question of whether teachers will be able to fill the 80-minute time slot.

Zweeres said that is where the professional development comes into play. Teachers

will be shown how to teach for a certain amount of time and create classroom projects, and then will work with the students to hopefully lessen or eliminate the amount of homework having to be done in study halls or at home.

Preschool proposal

Perry discussed the proposal of a new tuition-based preschool program to be housed at White Oak Elementary, servicing children in the Saratoga, Morris Elementary and Nettle Creek school districts.

“The school is proposed to be blended with 30 percent special education children and 70 percent regular education children. We have approximately 25 people already interested in this program,” Perry said.

Perry said on top of tuition costs, there are still costs that each district would have to absorb, which may include transportation to and from the preschool.

“The cost would be approximately $200 per month for the regular education students, to the special education students, the school would be free. The days are half school days, five days a week, I believe,” Perry said.

‘Louie Louie’ singer Jack Ely dies at 71 after long bout with illness The ASSOCIATED PRESS PORTLAND, Ore. – Jack Ely, the singer known for “Louie Louie,” the low-budget recording that became one the most famous songs of the 20th century, died at his home in Redmond, Oregon, after a long battle with an illness. He was 71. His son, Sean Ely, confirmed the death Tuesday.

“Because of his religious beliefs, we’re not even sure what [the illness] was,” he said.

Jack Ely was an original member of the Kingsmen, a band formed in 1959 that mostly performed cover versions of songs. Four years later, the group recorded “Louie Louie” at a studio in its home city of Portland. According to lore, it cost $36.

The song was written in the mid-1950s by Richard Berry, a Los Angeles musician with roots in doo-wop music.

As he recorded it in 1957, the tune had a calypso feel and described a patron telling the barkeep he had to go, to get back to his girl waiting across the sea in Jamaica.

The Kingsmen’s version was recorded in 1963 and is

the definitive version, going from cult classic to rock-androll standard. It has inspired more than a thousand cover versions and there’s no reliable estimate for how many times it’s been drunkenly sung at parties.

In addition to the song’s fame, Ely’s incoherent singing also made it one of the most misunderstood. The FBI was

so mystified by the hard-to-understand lyrics that it conducted an investigation into whether the song was obscene.

They found it to be “unintelligible at any speed.”

Over the years, Ely and other band members attributed the indistinct lyrics to having the microphone suspended from the ceiling, forcing Ely to shout up at it.

Principal Kim DesLauriers said D.A.R.E. has been taught at ICS since 1988 and he thanked the city of Morris and the Morris Police Department for presenting the program for so many years, according to a news release from Morris police.

DesLauriers noted the values and principles exhibited in the D.A.R.E. program are consistent with the values and principles taught at ICS. The students participated in the 11-week program, which focuses on teaching the students life skills that will help them make positive decisions as they grow up.

Lt. Nicholas Doerfler of the Coal City Fire Protection District was the featured speaker.

Doerfler also is a 1995 ICS graduate who was a graduate of D.A.R.E. He explained that throughout life the students will have to make important decisions on a daily basis. The decisions and choices they make in life help define what kind of person they are and subsequently become.

Doerfler also told the graduates how important having good role models are in a person’s life.

He said many times the best role models are your parents and/or relatives. He recognized Morris Police Department Deputy Chief John Severson as one of his role models in his adult life.

As part of the program, each student was required to write an essay on what they learned in D.A.R.E. and why

they think it is important to be drug and violence free.

Hannah McGhee was chosen as the class representative from Rhonda Johnson’s class and she read her essay as part of the ceremony.

She received a medal and a D.A.R.E. sports ball for her accomplishment.

Each D.A.R.E. graduate received a T-shirt and a certificate recognizing their achievement.

Patrol Officer Jessica Smith, also an ICS graduate, was the instructor for the program this year.

The 2015 graduates are Rhett Barkley, Brooklyn Boykins, Jeffrey Bzdill, Madeline Castillo, Jackson Christensen, Duncan Collard, Brady Danek, Alexa Edwards, Brianna Funk, Mac Johnston, Grace Lines, Hannah McGhee, Matthew Munsell, Finn Paulson, Alma Repond, Christian Siwiec, Jeffery Thiers, Samuel Thorson and Kylie Villarreal.

By ANDREA WEIGL The News & Observer You may still be wincing a bit if you had to write a bigger-than-expected check to the state or Uncle Sam on tax day this year. Moments like these make many of us ponder belt tightening, especially how we can save a few dollars on our food budgets.

First off, the easiest way to save money on food is to cook more of it at home. Second, the most expensive items on our shopping lists are often animal proteins: filets of fish, hunks of meat, cuts of poultry. So how can we save money and still get our protein fix?

Linda Watson of Raleigh, North Carolina, who offers frugal, healthy recipes on her Cook for Good website, says: “The most expensive protein you eat is a protein you don’t need.”

The typical American consumes too much protein, said Jennifer Anderson, a registered dietitian with the heart and vascular institute at Novant Health in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Most adults need between 46 and 56 grams of protein a day. Keep in mind that two large eggs have 12 grams, a 4-ounce piece of chicken has 36 grams, and an 8-ounce cup of skim milk has 8 grams. Eat all of those in a day and you have consumed the recommended daily limit.

“We can get our needs met without having meat at every single meal,” Anderson said.

Fish, meat and poultry are not our only sources of protein. Think of financial guru Dave Ramsey’s oft-given advice to those trying to save money: Eat beans and rice and rice and beans.

You don’t have to be that spartan, but beans are a good starting point for frugal, protein-packed meals. Many other vegetables are excellent sourc-

Another idea is to stretch the animal proteins that you do buy with other ingredients.

Instead of a hunk of meat on your plate, use meat to season a vegetable stir fry or a bean soup. One chopped chicken breast can go a long way in a pasta salad filled with vegetables. Ground beef goes farther for tacos if tortillas are also

filled with grilled peppers, onions and squash.

When you do shop for fish, meat or poultry, only buy it on sale, advises frugal blogger Jessica Fisher, author of the Good Cheap Eats blog and a new cookbook by the same name.

Fisher has a lot of experience stretching protein dollars, feeding her family of eight. She combines turkey and black beans for a simple taco dinner. She makes lasagna with only a pound of

ground meat, and sloppy Joes instead of hamburgers. She notes that today’s chicken breasts are so huge that she often cuts them into four portions.

Less meat doesn’t leave her or her family hungry.

“We feel satisfied,” Fisher said. “We don’t feel deprived.”

OPINION Nonviolent offenders push Ill. prison capacity SPRINGFIELD – I hurried on to the train Thursday, glanced down at my boarding pass and then saw I was seated next to a newly released inmate.

The cheap sneakers, ill-fitting clothes and cellblock tats gave it away.

The Illinois Department of Corrections gives prisoners who have served their time Amtrak tickets allowing them to return to their families.

The young man sitting next to me had just finished serving four years at the Danville Correctional Center.

He had visited his mother and brother in Chicago and was heading to Springfield to live with his girlfriend.

“When I got home I found out my little brother was hooked on crack cocaine. Can you believe that? He’s just 17 and he’s hooked on crack,” my seatmate said as he popped open a can of Miller High Life stashed in a bag under his seat.

I said, “Uh huh” and tried to bury my nose a little deeper in my book.

In Illinois, 47 percent of inmates released end up returning to prison.

That’s an embarrassment.

No nation locks up a higher percentage of its citizens than the United States of America.

Is the land of the free now the home of the incarcerated?

Violent criminals belong behind bars. But so often the folks we lock up aren’t dangerous. In fact, 45 percent of Illinois inmates are locked up for nonviolent offenses.

And the Illinois Department of Corrections has 48,000 people locked up in a system designed to house 32,000.

Remember, just about everyone who goes to prison gets out. And seldom does someone leave prison a better person than when they went in.

VIEWS Scott Reeder But by the same token, no one ever left prison wanting to go back. The young man who was sitting next to me is a good case in point.

“I’ve got to look after my baby and my baby’s mamma now. I’m willing to do any kind of work. I’m even willing to work at Burger King,” he said.

He then glanced at my shirt and tie and said “Do you think you could get me a job? I’m moving to Springfield because I want to start over,” as he took a swallow from his third beer.

Sadly, there are a lot of jobs this young man won’t be eligible for because of his felony conviction. It is difficult for felons to become barbers, nail technicians and a whole host of other licensed vocations.

It’s time to lift those restrictions. After all, the harder it is for someone to find a job, the more likely it is they’ll return to crime.

It’s also time to look at reducing sentences for nonviolent offences. The Illinois Senate’s vote last week to reduce penalties for having a small amount of pot is a step in the right direction.

We need to look at intelligent sentencing alternatives for other crimes as well.

Crime may not pay, but neither does the way Illinois has been dealing with nonviolent offenses.

Cheshareck launches Morris over DeKalb

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It’s safe to say the Morris baseball team’s 5-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win over DeKalb on Tuesday belonged to Tom Cheshareck.

All the Redskin senior did was pitch a complete-game, three-hit shutout on the mound and go 2 for 3 with a three-run homer and four RBIs at the plate.

The home run, his first of the season, came in the bottom of the sixth inning and stretched a precarious 2-0 lead into the much more comfortable 5-0.

Matt Walker led off the bottom of the sixth for the Redskins (11-10-1, 3-5) with a single up the middle, then Tyler Bordner singled to left.

DeKalb coach Justin Keck then summoned lefty Dominic Buckner to the mound to face the left-handed hitting Cheshareck.

Cheshareck foiled that strategy by launching Buckner’s first pitch over the fence in right to score Walker and courtesy runner Colton Akre in front of him.

Lefty on lefty is usually a good strategy, but apparently not when it comes to facing Cheshareck.

“My dad is left-handed, and he throws to me in the cage a lot,” Cheshareck said. “Leftys don’t faze me at all. I am used to hitting off of them.

“It felt really good to get that one. I hit a few last year, but this is my first one this year.”

Armed with a five-run lead, Cheshareck put the finishing touches on a gem of a game on the mound.

He allowed a leadoff single to Josh Ottum, but struck out Jordan Keck and got pinch-hitter Nate Sisler on a fielder’s choice to second before incuding a game-ending grounded to second to end the game.

Cheshareck finished with a three-hitter, walking three and striking out four.

The strikeout numbers are not what he’s used to, but he’ll take it.

“The way we swung the bats yesterday [a 12-2 win over DeKalb], I knew our offense would come around and score.

I was just trying to keep us in the game.”

“Tom just had a great day all-around,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “I was very happy with how he was able to coax their hitters into a lot of ground balls. This was probably one of his more efficient games. When they did get runners on, he was able to make the big pitches and get out of the inning.

“He’s a senior and a leader, and this is what we expect out of him. The big hit was just icing on the cake.”

With DeKalb hitters beating the ball into the ground,

the middle infield of Jake McDonald and Emmet Chouinard were busy scooping them up.

Shortstop McDonald made a couple of nifty plays ranging behind second base, and Chouinard handled every chance that came his way flawlessly.

“Our middle infield played great,” Kein said. “Jake and Emmet were very good. This was one of those days that all three phases of the game were solid. We got some key hits when we needed them, Tom pitched well and our defense was sharp. It’s nice to have a little momentum going.”

The game was scoreless through 3 1 ⁄2 innings before Morris got on the board.

Morris softball prevails in defensive battle STAFF REPORTS DEKALB – The game between the DeKalb softball team and Morris was a defensive battle from start to finish, with Morris holding on for a 2-1 win on Tuesday.

Morris starting pitcher Abby Burns did all the right things in preventing DeKalb (11-9 overall, 3-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) from giving any run support to Morgan Newport. It was 1-0 in favor of Morris through six innings, in which DeKalb only recorded two hits.

“We just didn’t bring the bats today,” DeKalb manager Jeff Davis said. “We ended the game with three hits, two of them by Mackenzie Riggs. It’s hard to win with three hits, so offensively we need to be better.”

DeKalb struggled at the plate on Tuesday, but second baseman Riggs did get two hits.

Morris held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the tables seemed to be turning for the Barbs. Newport led off the inning with a walk and scored the first run for the Barbs after a hit by shortstop Abby Taylor. Taylor was called out at second base trying to stretch the hit on a close play for the first out of the inning.

Burns finished with eight strikeouts and only allowed three DeKalb batters to reach base.

Coal City 20, Sandwich 0:

The bats came alive for the Coal City softball team Monday, as the Coalers thumped Sandwich in Interstate Eight Conference play. Coal City (118, 5-3) collected 18 hits in the contest, led by Leah Campos, who was 4 for 4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Emily Aichele was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs, while Makenna Emerson was 2 for 4 with

three runs and five RBIs. Taylor Meents went 2 for 3 with two runs. All of the offense made things easy for winning pitcher Leslie Youskevtch, who allowed just two hits and struck out two.

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Kyle Fuller and Matt Forte were the Bears’ 2015 recipients of the Brian Piccolo Award, but Forte was not present Tuesday for the ceremony at the PNC Center at Halas Hall.

Forte has been absent from the team’s offseason workout program. He is in the last year of his current contract.

“It’s a personal decision.

It’s up to Matt. I think that decision should be respected,” said Bears chairman George McCaskey. “We’d like to get him here for practice, but we know that Matt takes very good care of himself.”

New offensive coordinator Adam Gase presented the award to Forte, saying that the staff “is anxious to get him

back in the building.” Last year, Josh McCown was the veteran winner of the award and not present, but that was because he was on the Buccaneers.

“Matt’s reputation around the league – and this is coaches, personnel guys, other players talking about him – is held in the highest regard,” Gase added. “He’s a dominant player, but he’s a dynamic worker and a great teammate.

And that’s spread around the league; everybody knows that.”

Pat McCaskey read a statement from Forte, which in part read, “Thank you to all my teammates that thought I was so deserving of this award that they voted for me.”

George McCaskey said he is leaving any communication with Forte up to general man-

ager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox. When asked if the situation was awkward, he responded, “I don’t think so. To me it’s like the guys declining not to go to the draft. That’s an intensely personal decision and I think that decision should be respected.”

The Bears opened their voluntary veteran minicamp Tuesday afternoon.

Fuller called the award an honor, adding, “I thank my teammates, I couldn’t have done it alone. I’m definitely thankful for this award.”

“You could tell from the moment he walked in the door last year that he was very mature, very knowledgable and that without even looking at him on the field, you could tell he was going to be a great Bear,” McCaskey said. “And

he’s certainly proven that in his first season and we’re looking for more great things from him to come.”

Fuller had four interceptions, 10 passes defensed and three forced fumbles as a rookie.

He said he is looking forward to the new defense and working with Vic Fangio.

“I like him a lot. He’s done a great job throughout his career,” Fuller said. “I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Fangio presented the award to Fuller, noting that he studied Fuller before last year’s draft, hoping he’d be in play for the 49ers.

“Brian Piccolo stood for being a great teammate. He was dedicated, courageous, and I believe Kyle fulfills all of those qualities,” Fangio said.

Rose’s best needed to regain control in Game 6

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The defense of Derrick Rose continued Tuesday. And as usual, it was his coach who tried to deflect any negative talk directed at the Bulls point guard.

“You have to understand, Derrick has been out for a long time, so there’s going to be some bumps in the road,” Tom Thibodeau said, after a light treatment day for the team at the Advocate Center. “There have been all season long.

“And, hopefully, he’ll continue to improve. When you miss the amount of time he’s

missed, and you’ve got to remember playoffs are different than the regular season.

He’s still re-adjusting to that as well. So he’ll bounce back, he’ll be fine.”

The Bulls better hope so.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, the Bulls find themselves only up 3-2, with Game 6 Thursday in Milwaukee. And, oh, by the way, no team in NBA playoff history ever has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a series. So how did the past two games get away from them?

It’s the usual suspects, but it starts with Rose, whether Thibodeau likes it or not.

In 10 of his first 12 quarters played in this round, Rose was as close to the 2010-11 throwback as had been seen.

There was 23 points on 9-for16 shooting in Game 1, with a plus/minus of plus-13. There was a Game 2 in which he didn’t shoot well – 4 for 14 – but had nine assists and seven rebounds. Finally, Game 3 was Rose’s finest masterpiece of the season, shooting 12 for 23 (5 for 9 from beyond the 3-point line), while handing out eight assists in the 34-point outburst.

Then there was Game 4, and more of the “I’m taking what they’re giving me” mentality.

Eight turnovers, 14 points on 5-for-13 shooting, followed up by a 5-for-20 performance, and six more turnovers.

That’s 10-for-33 shooting and 14 turnovers in two consecutive losses.

“It was just that they jumped on us right away, we just couldn’t turn things the way we wanted,” Rose said, when asked why there appeared to be no killer instinct shown by him and his teammates. “Great thing about the playoffs, you play again, it’s the best of four. Learn from my mistakes.”

Gentle stretching can help relieve pain from arthritis Dear Doctor K: Will stretching exercises help to relieve my arthritis pain?

Dear Reader: Yes, they will.

That may seem strange. After all, arthritis affects the joints • the ends of two adjacent bones and the space between them. In contrast, stretching involves muscles. But the joints and the muscles around those joints are intimately connected.

A joint with arthritis hurts when it is asked to move.

It is the muscles that move the bones that form a joint.

When movement is painful, as it so often is for people with arthritis, it’s natural to limit movement. For example, if you straighten a leg, and feel pain owing to arthritis in a knee, you’ll tend to keep that knee

Yet if you keep an arthritic joint bent, rather than moving it through its full range of motion, you allow muscles to stiffen in that position. Over time, the muscles shorten, limiting range of motion and prompting other problems.

Stretching can help people with osteoarthritis nip this sort of cycle in the bud.

Stretches can also help people with rheumatoid arthritis improve their range of motion in damaged joints.

Before you begin, ask your

doctor about stretching exercises to ease stiffness. Your doctor will probably advise you to work with a physical therapist who can design an exercise program tailored to your specific needs and goals.

I also recommend that my arthritis patients do some resistance exercises to build or maintain strength in muscles that support key joints.

These tips can help as you get started: • WARM UP THOROUGHLY. Warming up your body before you start your stretching routine will pump more blood and oxygen to your muscles, loosening them and preparing them for more intense use. Use a hot shower or bath, a heated pool, or even warm compress-

es or a heating pad to warm stiff joints before you stretch.

• STRETCH DURING YOUR LEAST PAINFUL TIME OF DAY. Morning, when stiffness tends to peak, won’t work for some people.

Choosing a window of time after pain relievers take effect can help make stretching easier.

• ADAPT STRETCHES. You may need to modify your stretches.

For example, it may be better for you to choose stretches you can do while seated, instead of standing.

• EXPECT SOME DISCOMFORT. I encourage everyone to stretch only to the point of mild tension, not pain. But some discomfort is to be expected with arthritis. Try the two-hour rule: If discomfort following

stretches lasts longer than two hours, or is more severe than your usual pain, step down your routine. Try doing fewer reps and holding stretches for less time. As stretching becomes easier, gradually step it up again.

As with all types of exercise, you need to engage in stretching regularly in order to reap lasting benefits. A daily regimen is best, but do stretch at least two or three times a week. (I’ve put descriptions and photographs of two stretching exercises on my website, askdoctork.com.)
