By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A public hearing scheduled for Wednesday on a proposed medical marijuana dispensary business that wants to operate in Morris likely will feature opposition from at least two nearby businesses.

Greenhouse Group LCC will present during Wednesday’s Morris Planning Commission meeting. It hopes to open a medical marijuana dispensary at 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It Again” video store.

The company is applying for a conditional permitted use permit from the city. The first step is for the Planning Commission to make a recommendation to the Morris City Council after hearing from the company and anyone else who chooses to speak at the hearing. To gain approval at least two-thirds of council members will need to vote in favor, as

“I’ve done a lot of research,” Simpson said. “Parents are concerned for their kids so it makes us all concerned about our jobs. Our staff has been worried and it’s been a daily topic of discussion.”

Eight other letters of objection aside from Simpson’s were submitted by employees of the studio. The authors suggest what the students will see at the dispensary is a safety concern. Included were articles about dispensaries across the nation that were robbed, including one in Bakersfield, California, where two people were killed.

“The amount of cash on hand is another part of this,” Belt said. “It involves the Banking Act and the FDIC.” Greenhouse Group was awarded a license by the state in February for a dispensary that will be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties.

Greenhouse Group attorney Ann Zwick declined Monday to comment.

tance between the day care and the potential dispensary is 759 feet. The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act prohibits a dispensary from being within 1,000 feet of a pre-existing preschool, elementary or secondary school, day care centers or homes or group day care homes.

“I’m concerned about the safety of the children and our neighborhood,” Mitchell said.

“The traffic from out of town is also a concern because we don’t know where these people are coming from.”

Simpson said she plans to speak at the hearing as not just a business owner, but for the future of the community.

“It’s not a good location,” Simpson said. “In fact, we shouldn’t even be having a hearing because there’s a day care within 1,000 feet of the location.”

In March, Greenhouse Group postponed its request for a hearing. Simpson said she thought it was over.

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and state Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, were joined by Greg Ridenour representing U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, who fielded questions at the event sponsored by Exelon, AT&T, and Aux Sable Liquid Products.

State Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Kankakee, and state Rep. John Anthony, R- Plainfield, were unable to attend.

The event began as a way to keep local business and community leaders informed of what was happening in Washington and Springfield, GEDC CEO Nancy Ammer said, but it also allows the lawmakers to hear what concerns are from local officials and residents.

Attendees were able to submit questions before the event, as well ask in-person to the panel.

One question was what happened with the state’s fiscal year 2015 budget, where money was swept from the road funds, and what would that mean going forward.

Rezin said to plug the $1.6 billion gap in this year’s budget – which ends June 30 – a one-time sweep was done.

Board to form committee to help MVK rescue district

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Members of the Mazon Verona Kinsman Rescue Squad District met with members of the Grundy County Finance Committee on Monday night seeking help funding their district until a referendum can get on the ballot next spring.

In December, they were granted the right to organize the Mazon Verona Kinsman Rescue Squad District in order to place a referendum question on the April 7 ballot asking for tax dollars to be levied for the new district, which would service ambulance calls

for the Mazon Fire Protection District and the Verona Kinsman Fire Protection District.

Despite an emergency motion March 23, Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson ruled the question could not be added because election results could be at risk. The next time the question could be placed on a ballot would be next spring, causing tax dollars to not reach the district until 2017.

“Unfortunately the paperwork never got to the county clerk so the question never got to go on the ballot,” Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman said to the committee.

To help protect the hearing of the public through an early alert system, the Lions Clubs of Illinois every year sponsor free hearing screenings for persons 18 and older and those 10 to 17 years old with written parental consent, in communities all over the state.

As part of that program, the Morris Lions Club is sponsoring a free screening Sunday.

Anyone who would like to check for possible hearing loss is encouraged to attend this event, free of charge, according to a news release.

There are nearly 720,000 hearing impaired persons in Illinois alone. Of these, 106,000 are deaf, and 26,000 were deaf before the age of 19.

Lion MaryJane Gillespie, chairwoman of the Hearing Bus project, noted hearing loss takes many forms. In some, the problem is simply they feel as if the sound has been turned down. Others may have trouble understanding various pitches or sounds. The causes vary, as do the many medical and mechanical treatments used to help.

“Since protection of our hearing is so important, we hope that the people of Morris will take full advantage of the hearing screenings,” Gillespie said in the release. The screenings take but a few minutes, and persons who show hearing loss are referred to hearing professionals for further evaluation and treatment.”

“We are basically a bedroom community. People go to work and we count on Morris and Dwight to help us respond,” she said. “Dwight only has one ambulance in service right now and Gardner is helping them.”

Rudman told the committee he was instructed by State’s Attorney Jason Helland to tell the committee it is important

to him and to the county. Helland currently is out of town at a conference.

Grundy board member Ken Iverson has been working with the group to see if they could find a way to raise the $70,000 needed to staff the station for 12 hours each day to make sure someone was on hand to respond to the residents.

The group said they will be going to each town, township and fire department in addition to the county to see what contributions they can get until they get a referendum passed and start collecting tax money.

Iverson said he would like

to form a task force or ad-hoc committee to help find a solution for the district.

“The time it takes other districts to respond to Mazon is sometimes 22 minutes, that’s triple the time it takes Mazon to respond,” Iverson said. “A minute can mean a life, it’s my biggest concern that we wait until it’s too late.”

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said he had been in discussions with both Helland and Iverson, and was aware of the situation and agreed that an ad-hoc committee should be formed to see what the choices are. He instructed Iverson to start up the committee.

Volunteers help charity building prepare for open house MORRIS HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Comcast employees volunteered for Comcast Cares Day on Saturday to help We Care of Grundy County prepare its new building for an open house to be held this week.

Comcast volunteers painted, worked in the clothes closet and repaired some shelving at We Care’s new facility, 530 Bedford Road in Morris.

Eight other volunteers also arrived April 21 and helped pack away winter clothing items, according to a news release from We Care.

“We are having a ribbon-cutting and open house with the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, April 29 from 5 to

7 p.m., so Comcast Cares Day couldn’t have come at a better time,” We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said in the release. “After completing the renovations on our current building, we intentionally left walls unpainted on our hallway as we knew someone would love the opportunity to work as a team and finish the painting for us. Comcast was the first to offer.”

“One way to fund it will to be to look at the gas tax, but that won’t come close to funding this bill.”

Cloonen said legislators don’t want to sweep any funds but they have to to move forward.

“My concern is that it would force construction projects to close down,” Cloonen said.

She said she remains a proponent of the proposed Illiana Expressway and another airport, but she understands those are temporarily on hold.

Cloonen said she understands the need for road funds at the local level.

“It’s no secret to anyone driving around here. I know in Grundy and Kankakee counties we’ve had some township roads closed just because they don’t even have the $12,000 to make it through to the end of the year,” she said.

Municipal funds

Dwight Trustee Jerry Curtis asked the legislators about the plans to cut the Local Government Distributive Fund.

Ammer said she had heard the cut could be as much as 50 percent.

The LGDF was created in 1969 to provide state financial aid to local governments.

The LGDF takes a predetermined percentage of state income tax collections and disburses it to local governments based on each unit’s share of the state’s population.

That money goes toward local general revenue funds, and can be used however local officials deem fit.

The loss of revenue would impact municipal governments’ budgets across the state.

Both Rezin and Cloonen said they have been contacted by mayors, trustees, clerks and other concerned citizens but they don’t know where the LGDF will end up once the budget is proposed.

The budget is expected at the end of May for fiscal 2016, which starts July 1.

“The entire budget is reflective of the revenue coming in,” Rezin said. “The governor is very committed to passing or presenting a budget that is balanced. Again, it’s the first time a budget has been balanced in 12 years.”

Cloonen said many municipalities she’s spoken to said they’ve done a good job with their budget and don’t want the state to balance its financial woes on the backs of the municipalities by taking away the funding.

“I have a couple of local district funds that ran out of road monies and asked for $10,000 to put gravel on their roads and it’s just not there,” Cloonen said. “We understand even a load of gravel is important to our small villages. We hear you loud and clear.”

Rezin said many of the services affected by the new budget are being challenged and LGDF is one of them.

She said she has spoken with the office of Gov. Bruce Rauner and was told that once the working groups that the governor formed have bills passed to address some key

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Jayne Meadows, the Emmy-nominated actress and TV personality who often teamed with her husband, Steve Allen, has died. She was 95.

Meadows died of natural causes Sunday at her home in the Encino, California, area, spokesman Kevin Sasaki said Monday. Her son, Bill Allen, and other family members were with her.

“She was not only an extraordinarily gifted actress who could move audiences from laughter to tears and back again all in one scene, but she was the greatest storyteller I have ever known.” said her son, who heads the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.

Though best known as the wife of the beloved TV host – and the sister of “Honeymooners” star Audrey Meadows – Jayne Meadows had a solid career in her own right.

She appeared on Broadway and in movies, gained three prime-time Emmy nominations as a TV actress and was a staple of talk shows and game shows.

Steve Allen, who died in 2000, summed up her appeal in a 1977 Los Angeles Times interview.

“She’s an old-fashioned woman, old-fashioned in terms of her attitudes, her manner, her demeanor, her voice,” he said. “She has a dignity that is rare these days. But she also has a lightness, an airiness, a girlishness and a certain degree of social innocence.”

“The thing that made me a name on television was not acting – it was (the game show),” Meadows told the Los Angeles Times. With that and her marriage, she added, “Instead of being the tortured actress who might have become an alcoholic or whatever, I ... settled for the security of love, a home, children, money in the bank and ‘I’ve Got a Secret.’ ” It was also 1952 when younger sister Audrey gained TV immortality, taking over the role of Ralph Kramden’s acerbic wife, Alice, in “The

Honeymooners.” At the time, it was a series of sketches on “The Jackie Gleason Show,” but it grew into one of the most popular, and influential, sitcoms in television history.

Jayne Meadows’ innumerable TV guest credits include many appearances on her husband’s shows: “Tonight,” ‘’The Steve Allen Show” and “The Steve Allen Comedy Hour,” as well as other talk shows.

One of her Emmy nods, for best guest actress in a series, came in 1978 for “Meeting of Minds,” Allen’s 1977-81 PBS show that portrayed historical figures getting together for a chat.

Among the characters Meadows played were Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette and Florence Nightingale, the role that got her the Emmy nod. Meadows got another Emmy nomination in 1987 as guest performer in a drama series for “St. Elsewhere” and again in 1996 for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for “High Society.”

In film, she played Billy Crystal’s mother in the 1991 hit “City Slickers” and the 1994 sequel, “City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly’s Gold.”

She had been largely retired since her husband’s death.

Meadows was born in 1919 to Episcopal missionary parents in Wu Chang, China, and barely spoke English when the family moved back to the United States. Plans for a memorial service were not immediately announced.

Don Mankiewicz, Oscar-nominated screenwriter, dies at 93 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Don M. Mankiewicz, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter from a legendary Hollywood family who created the television shows “Marcus Welby, M.D.” and “Ironside,” has died in California. He was 93.

Mankiewicz died Saturday of congestive heart failure at his home near Los Angeles, his son John told the Los Angeles Times.

The son of Herman J. Mankiewicz, co-writer of “Citizen Kane,” Don Mankiewicz grew up in Beverly Hills, where his parents’ dinner

guests included the Marx Brothers and Greta Garbo.

His uncle was Joseph Mankiewicz, director of “All About Eve” and other classic films.

After graduating from Columbia University in 1942 and serving in Army intelligence, Don Mankiewicz became a

staff writer for the New Yorker, contributed to other magazines and started working in TV. Early in his TV career, he wrote scripts for the drama series “Playhouse 90.”

He was assigned to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Last Tycoon” at least in part be-

cause he came of age during its old Hollywood setting, the Times said.

“I was probably the only writer around who had actually seen Fitzgerald in person,” he told TV historian Stephen Bowie in a 2007 oral history.

“He hung around with my father a little bit.”

In honor of Arbor Day, ComEd also announced it would be giving away an additional 2,000 low-growing trees to the public as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance reliability and promote environmental stewardship.

By JULIANNE BUCK Community Foundation of Grundy County MORRIS – Monday, May 11, is the date of the Community Foundation’s annual “Donor & Partner Appreciation Night” from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Morris Country Club.

This event is not a gala – no tickets, no raffles. Instead it is a night of fellowship to celebrate the successes of the Foundation over the past year and to thank both donors and partners for helping to make our collective successes a reality.

A success of the past year is the launch of the new Grundy County Senior Network, so “seniors” is the topic of the night. We are excited to announce that Dr. Bhavesh Gandhi of Presence Medical Group is our guest speaker. Gandhi is a geriatrician

dedicated to addressing the complex needs of older adults, including the combined treatment of a disease, a disability, multiple medications, memory loss, and the emotional concerns around aging.

We were introduced to Gandhi by a local friend who is pleased with Gandhi’s holistic approach to aging. To quote our friend, “Two issues facing most senior citizens (over 65), including me, is determination of when mental faculties have diminished to the point where intervention is needed and, secondly, is the medication prescribed by various specialists (without an overall plan collectively) appropriate, and what can be eliminated.

Gandhi, through in-office testing of my current mental skills, established a baseline for comparative review every six months. In addition, he immediately eliminated one of

my prescriptions and reduced the dosage of a second.”

We know that it is the goal of seniors to remain independent and to live in their own home as long as possible. Mental capacity is an important part of independence so it will be interesting to hear how the medical field can help seniors maintain it for extended independence.

Gandhi also will share his thoughts about how the Foundation can use leadership and philanthropy to answer the question: Does Grundy County have the amenities and services to make Grundy County a great place for seniors and retirees?

In addition to Gandhi, and the members of the Grundy County Senior Network have been invited to bring materials and displays. “Communication” is an issue that has come out of the Network and we

hope that our guests that evening will take the time to learn about the various services for our seniors in Grundy County – and then help spread the word so that all seniors in Grundy County are aware of services so that they can access them and participate.

OPINION Why isn’t House Speaker Madigan voting on bills?

A couple of weeks ago, I started noticing that House Speaker Michael Madigan wasn’t voting on most legislation during his chamber’s floor debates. Madigan was feeling under the weather that week, and was ill enough that a leadership meeting with the governor couldn’t be scheduled until a few days later, so I let it go.

But the pattern continued the following week. A spot check of roll calls showed Madigan was listed as present and accounted for, but hadn’t voted either for or against much of anything. What the heck?

Madigan’s historical voting record is all over the map because, in the past, he has tended to vote for all of his Democratic members’ bills unless he has a strong ideological position in opposition, or if he has a conflict of interest.

Madigan’s spokesman Steve Brown told me the Speaker decided back in January that he only wants to make “informed” votes. There are just so many bills out there and not enough time to consider each one, Brown said. Huh? Madigan and his top staff examine each and every bill and amendment back and forth, upside down at least once a week, and often several times a week. So if any legislator is “informed,” it’s Michael J. Madigan.

Brown also agreed with my own observation that Madigan could be patterning his behavior after the U.S. House Speaker, who traditionally votes on only the rarest of occasions.

Madigan did vote for a recent fiscal 2015 state budget fix, but that’s probably because he was a party to the agreement. He has voted on a handful of other bills, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a pattern.

Keep in mind, this is a guy who is legendary in Springfield for his mildly eccentric habits. He eats an apple at noon every day. He eats dinner at precisely 7 at night – almost always at one of two Springfield restaurants (unless he’s in the rare mood for a steak, and then he and his people head out to that spot), and he eats the same meal and drinks the same wine

VIEWS Rich Miller every time. A severe crisis erupted at one of those restaurants several years ago when weekend staff accidentally served all of Madigan’s special wine to some tourists.

There is, or at least seems to be, a reason for every single thing he does. He makes no moves without considering all the possible angles. It took him eight hours to issue a press release after Rod Blagojevich was arrested, for crying out loud.

So, after 44 years in the Illinois House, for this man to suddenly and without a credible explanation decide to stop voting on almost all legislation is simply bizarre.

I’m told a couple of staffers were upbraided last week when they pushed Madigan’s roll call button on some legislation. They were reportedly told in no uncertain terms to never do that again.

Maybe he’s just trying to play with everybody’s head. I just don’t know. Whatever is going on, Speaker Madigan certainly wouldn’t allow any of his members to behave this way. I can just see it now ...

Madigan: “Why aren’t you voting?”

Member: “I only want to make informed votes, Mr. Speaker, sir.”

Madigan: “Then read the analyses that my staff writes for you and pick a button. Better yet, just let my staff ‘inform’ you of your best voting options. Your constituents sent you here to vote on legislation, not sit there like an armless bump on a log with zero political future because I’m going to find somebody else to take your seat if you don’t start voting right now.”

Member: “Yes, sir. It’ll never happen again, sir. I’m sorry, sir. May I please shine your apple, sir?”

Madigan: “Too late. It’s 12:30.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Oppose proposed location for medical marijuana dispensary

To the Editor: I am writing to ask that local residents sign our petition to stop the medical marijuana dispensary from opening next door to Forte Arts Center. They have reapplied with the city for a conditional-use permit to run the dispensary at 1204 Division St. It is not zoned for this use, so they have to go before the zoning board at 7 p.m. April 29 to ask for this permit.

My hope is that we have 1,000 signatures and about 200 people at the meeting in protest. There are plenty of other location is Morris and Grundy County that are more suitable. As you know, we daily have all ages of children in our building. The law states a dispensary can’t be within 1,000 feet of a school or a day care center. There is a licensed day care center that is less than 800 feet away as well. The law was put in place to protect children and schools from being close to a business of this nature.

My business is all about children. Their safety and well-being is my priority. I know I am contributing to the future of this community by teaching your

children and I take that job seriously.

A dispensary does not belong next to us, and I am hoping as a community we can show the zoning board and the City Council they should not approve the permit and ask them to go elsewhere.

I hope you will join me in doing what we can to stop this from happening.

Please do what you can to help. If you have signed the petition, would you consider writing a letter to the Zoning and Planning Commission in protest? We have had a couple parents write letters.

Your voice will be heard and will make a difference. If you can take a packet of petitions to have signed at work, by your family members, in your neighborhood, etc. that would also be very helpful.

If you can, join me at 7 p.m. April 29 at City Hall to attend the zoning meeting, I would really appreciate it. I want them to see it is not just me against the location of the dispensary and the community is against it as well. My attorney suggested we gather as many people as we can to make a statement to the zoning board.

Quick start leads Morris past Reed-Custer

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – There were few better ways to start a soccer game than the way the Morris girls did in their 9-0 win Monday over Reed-Custer.

Not 40 seconds into the game, Morris’ Amanda Grant scored off an assist by Alexa Rain, and the rout began.

“We really worked hard on trying to possess the ball tonight,” Morris coach Kristin Porter said. “We play Sycamore on Thursday, and they beat us 6-0 when we played them a couple of weeks ago.

We definitely want to improve on that. We had this game tonight and a game Tuesday at Rochelle to work on some things that we had trouble with against Sycamore.

“I thought we did a pretty good job of possessing the ball. We got good touches and we spread the field well, and that’s what we want to be able to do all the time.”

of the first half, by the time the game was 26 minutes old, Morris (7-4-1) had built a 6-0 lead. Katherine Gallick scored after Grant, followed by a goal from Mya Shannon. Addison Polite then scored twice in a row before Kelly Monk added the sixth Morris tally.

Emily Burling scored twice in the final 14 minutes of the first half, the first off an assist from Grant and the second on a rebound off a shot by Rain.

That made the halftime score 8-0 and, since Morris led by at least seven, it cut the time in the second half to 20 minutes rather than 40.

Rain had three assists for the Redskins as well, while Emma Dingbaum, Grant, Monk and Dorissa Gutierrez each contributed an assist.

In the second half, Alexis Halcomb scored an unassisted goal with 6:42 to play to provide the final margin.

Much of the rest of the second half was played with Morris trying to maintain possession without scoring and with some players that don’t normally see a lot of playing time spending a majority of the half on the field.

Meanwhile, the Morris defense did not allow for many Reed-Custer shots on goal, helping Maren Bashor to record the shutout.

“We could have scored a lot more goals tonight,” Porter admitted. “But that really wasn’t what the focus was. I really thought Alexa Rain had a lot of good crosses, and that was good to see.

“Mostly, we want to take this game and Tuesday’s game and prepare for Thursday’s game against Sycamore.”

Morris plays hot in rout of DeKalb STAFF REPORTS DEKALB – A week after being swept by Sycamore, the Morris baseball team bounced back in a big way Monday, pounding out 14 hits in a 12-2 Norhern Illinois Big 12 East win over DeKalb in five innings.

After a four-run second, Morris (10-10-1, 2-5) started the third with seven runners reaching. The Redskins scored seven in the inning for an 11-0 lead after 2 1⁄2 innings.

“I think just mentally for us we were in a pretty dark place at the end of last week,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “Not a lot of things went right for us last week. It was one of those weeks. Some of which was completely nobody’s fault but ours. It was a bad week of baseball for us. But it’s nice start to the series, but we play three games. ... This doesn’t mean in any way we were 10 runs better than them. We just were to-

day. We have to get refocused for tomorrow.”

On the flip side, DeKalb didn’t get its first runner on until the fourth on a slow infield chopper, then scored two unearned runs off of Matt Walker, who allowed two hits and two walks in five innings while striking out four. Every starter for Morris had a hit. Emmet Chouinard had a two-run single in the second, Walker had two singles and an RBI and Tom Cheshareck and Chase Hansen each went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. “I’m happy with the way we swung the bats coming off a tough series against Sycamore,” Kein said. “We got washed out on Saturday, so it’s been a little time since we’ve taken the field. I was anxious to come out here and see how we started the series. And to our kid’s credit I think they came out the right way with the right mentality. We got aggressive and it paid off for us.”

Despondent husband wants to break cycle of cheating Dear Abby: I have been married twice. My first marriage lasted 20 years, the second one about four years.

During my first marriage, I started cheating seven months after our wedding. My wife knew about some of the affairs and stuck with me anyway. I finally felt so guilty for hurting her emotionally, I called it quits and married the last woman I cheated on her with.

Dear Abby: Is there a rule of etiquette regarding Christmas presents at this point in the year? I have boxes full of gifts for some friends and their children. These friends live no more than 30 minutes away, but have canceled every plan we have made since the middle of November. They know I have the gifts, and I’ve asked them to stop and get
