MORRIS – I have become more reflective after 30 years in public education. Recently, I was reminded why I became a teacher – to impact and be impacted by students.

I had the privilege of being a cast member of the Morris Community High School production of “Grease.” It was one of those positive experiences I will never forget. As I listened to the seniors pour out their heartfelt farewells before the last performance, I was reminded once again how fortunate I am to work at Morris Community High School.

“We’ve got great kids” and “We are really lucky here” are phrases I hear staff say time and time again. They are right!

We have a building loaded with outstanding students who are hard-working, involved and “balanced” young adults destined to do great things. Parents, guardians, staff and the community are to be commended for your support of your students and our high school.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “balance” as “a state in which different things occur in equal or proper amounts or have equal

They handle school, work, extracurricular activities, while they continue to thrive under the pressures of growing up.

As an educational leader, I have tried to take a “balanced approach” to the opportunities and challenges that come our way. The unknowns of No Child Left Behind coupled with the implementation and assessment of the Common Core State Standards have garnered national media attention recently.

Principal Kelly Hussey and I were impressed that our new testing process went smoothly. The students, parents and faculty trusted the administrative team to implement the new assessment to the best of our ability. The trick is to find the right “balance” between too much testing and not enough.

budgeting process even more challenging. It would be tough to cut and slash our way to a “balanced” budget and still offer a quality experience for students. We sometimes make decisions that limit student opportunities because of a lack of funding. We often transfer dollars between funds to make it through a year. This is a reality for nearly 75 percent of the school districts in Illinois.

This challenge will continue for some time to come, but a “balanced approach” to these challenges is the best course of action.

I was impressed to watch cast members writing English papers and finishing calculus homework while waiting to perform on stage. Athletes complete assignments in the bleachers and on the bus in order to keep up with coursework. Almost 80 percent of our student body is involved in a least one or more activities at MCHS. Our staff dedicates countless hours to make these experiences meaningful and an important part of the learning process. The adults sacrifice family time and give back to the families in our school

community.

The reforms, changes, new ideas and best practices are often cyclical in education.

Veteran teachers will often use the adage “this too shall pass” when they are bombarded by the latest trend. I believe that if we stay focused on our mission and take an even-keeled approach to our challenges, MCHS will continue to improve and move forward.

Changing out of my superintendent suit and hitting the stage in that 1978 white prom tux was a powerful personal reminder that I am fortunate to be a teacher. The leadership challenges I face may have impacted my equilibrium at times, but the students reminded me that a “balanced approach” is critical.

Local churches work together Saturday to feed children in need

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – In the sanctuary of Minooka Bible Church on Saturday, music blared from speakers and people standing around tables danced and yelled out as they filled another box of food to feed hungry children throughout the world.

In a collaboration with parishioners at Resurrection Lutheran Church of Channahon, Christ First Baptist Church of Minooka and The Village Christian Church of Minooka, the parishioners of Minooka Bible Church raised $24,000 to host a MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children.

“This is an event that everyone looks forward to,” event coordinator Allison Selk said.

“It is a fun event and it’s cool to work with four churches and meet new people and hang out while packing the food.”

Volunteers filled the room 160 at a time, in three separate shifts, to package 108,000 meals. Each pack is made up of rice, grain and protein to give complete nutrition to the children on the receiving end.

Osgood said if Illinois hopes to continue to pass the standards required by the Clean Air Act’, nuclear power will be necessary because wind can’t be relied upon.

But a post on BEST’s Facebook page argues that with more than $2 billion profit in 2014, Exelon isn’t in need of what the coalition calls a bailout.

Osgood said Exelon doesn’t consider it a bailout.

“The cost to Illinois of allowing Illinois nuclear plants to close early are as much as 12 times greater than the cost of the LCPS when fully considering increased wholesale power prices, transmission costs, adverse economic impacts and adverse environmental impacts,” Osgood said.

The study fails to take into consideration robust consumer protections in the LCPS, he said.

“The study completely ignores the fact that the LCPS bill includes a rebate to customers if wholesale electric prices go above a certain level,” Osgood said. “The LCPS bill also includes a 2.015 percent cap on electric bills, which translates to about $2 per month for the

Coalition study by Kestler Energy Consulting on the LCPS found it could cost ComEd and Ameren ratepayers $295 million annually over the statutory contract period from January 2016 through May 2021.

“It’s unfortunate that instead of leveling with people in Illinois, Exelon is choosing to scare communities around the state at a time when its Illinois nuclear plants are profitable and they are about to get hundreds of millions in additional ratepayer funds for those plants later this summer,” BEST Coalition Director Dave Lundy said in a statement in response to a request by the Morris Herald-News for comment.

Bob Osgood, Exelon Nuclear Dresden site communications manager, said the Byron Generating Station, Quad Cities Generating Station and Clinton Power Station are economically challenged due to the low price of natural gas and rising popularity of wind and solar energy.

“They are facing the possibility of premature closure,” Osgood said. “It would have significant impact on the electrical grid. Carbon output would increase. Many jobs would be lost, not to mention

According to ExelonCorp. com, Exelon employs about 5,900 people at six nuclear energy facilities in Illinois, including the Braidwood Generating Station, Dresden Generating Station and LaSalle County Generating Station.

Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said closing the stations would have a trickle-down effect in Grundy and LaSalle counties. There are a considerable number of Minooka residents employed at Dresden and Braidwood, Brennan said.

“Even though the three plants in danger of closing aren’t near us, it will affect us,” Brennan said.

As for BEST’s environmental concerns regarding nuclear energy, Kopczick disagrees.

“You can go stand next to the Dresden plant and be at less of a risk, because it’s confined, than if you were standing out on Route 47 inhaling exhaust fumes,” Kopczick said.

The LCPS, if approved by the Illinois Legislature, would require ComEd and Ameren to buy low-carbon energy credits to match 70 percent of the electricity used on the distribution system. Low carbon energy sources include wind, solar, hydro, clean coal and nuclear.

In response to Better Energy Solutions for Tomorrow (BEST) Coalition’s opposition of the proposed Low Carbon Portfolio Standard, mayors of municipalities surrounding Exelon’s six Illinois stations have signed a statement calling for BEST to “cease its baseless and disingenuous attacks on Illinois communities and middle class families.”

“The group is against nuclear power and set out to close nuclear power facilities,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said. “They don’t care about the jobs here in Morris or in this area.”

“You can go stand next to the Dresden plant and be at less of a risk, because it’s confined, than if you were standing out on Route 47 inhaling exhaust fumes.”

The buying and selling was all done virtually by seventhand eighth-grade students in teacher Dawn Wren’s pre-algebra and algebra classes through “The Stock Market Game,” an online educational tool.

For seven years Wren had her students participate in the game, but for the first time, this year one of her groups took first place among the 157 groups throughout Illinois for

Coal City knew when he showed up he would be packaging food to feed children throughout the world – children just like him.

“I wanted to come,” Hernandez said while putting food into a bag to be weighed and sealed for delivery. “I like feeding starving children.”

Selk, who also is a Shaw Media correspondent, said the event is organized so children and adults can work together to package the food. The youngest volunteers were just 5 years old.

Mary Satori of Wilmington brought her children and grandchildren to help because she believes it’s something they should do together as a family. “It’s important to feed hungry children, but it’s also important to teach the children,” she said. “These are life lessons they will never forget.”

Minooka Bible Church also participated in a Feed My Starving Children MobilePack in 2012 and 2013, taking off a year before it decided to participate again this year.

Selk said the four churches each raise $6,000 to host the event, and doing it annually is not feasible while the churches also raise money for other missions. They’ve collectively decided to hold the event every other year going forward.

“It is a lot of money to raise to host the event,” Selk said.

“We created T-shirts for fundraising, we’ve gotten corporate sponsors, and we’ve had children collect money and donate it.”

She said as of Saturday organizers had received checks for hundreds of dollars and seen even the smallest church members bring back collection boxes full of change and dollars they had collected by walking

“There are millions of starving children around the

world,” Crawford said. “They would die without food, that wouldn’t be good for anyone.”

According to its website, Feed My Starving Children is a Christian nonprofit organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. Volunteers handpack meals specially formulated for malnourished children, and they send them to mission partners running orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs around the world.

Hosting people at home and taking them around the sights of Princeton, the Greater New Jer-

sey and New York area, Philadelphia and Washington, DC brought joy to her and her husband and they made many lasting global friendships that she maintained through her annual Christmas card writing tradition and Christmas dinners always including her dear friends Grace and Frank Sinden and Ruth and Paul Finkelstein.

Helen embodied the qualities of The Greatest Generation and imparted them on those she touched through her work ethic, sense of responsibility and loyalty. She took pride in the military and civic contributions of her brother and husband and befriended neighbors and strangers alike. She will be missed by her family and friends for always being there with a helping hand and being an inspiration for her independent spirit and energy.

Former Expos executive Jim Fanning dies at 87 The Associated Press TORONTO – Jim Fanning, the longtime Montreal Expos executive who managed the franchise to its only playoff appearance in Canada, has died. He was 87.

The Toronto Blue Jays confirmed Fanning’s death Saturday.

Fanning was the Expos’ general manager when the team entered the major leagues in 1968 and spent 25 years with the franchise that moved to Washington in 2005 and became the Nationals.

As field manager in the strike-shortened 1981 season, he directed Montreal to playoffs.

After beating Philadelphia, the Expos lost to Los Angeles

in the National League Championship Series. Fanning was 116-103 as manager in 1981-82 and 1984.

“It is with my deepest condolences to the Fanning family upon hearing of the passing of Jim [Saturday],” Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston said in a statement. “He was a longtime friend and not enough can be said of his contributions to the game of baseball, particularly in Canada.

Jim impacted many lives and he will be remembered fondly by many inside and outside the game of baseball.”

Fanning was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000 and served as a team ambassador for the Blue Jays.

Evan Lindemuth made more money than any other team in Illinois.

“We did OK at first,” Joseph said, “then it really picked up.

We were jumping from first to second.”

“I was kind of happy that we won,” Lindemuth said.

“We won because we chose to buy stocks that were good.”

Joseph and Lindemuth said they were the main researchers of the team. Doss and Ross were co-captains and made the final decisions of whether to invest in particular stocks.

Their system paid off.

Doss said their best performer was Netflix, which earned them $12,711. They said the worst performer surprised them – they lost more than $1,000 with Wal-Mart stock.

Ross said one of his suggestions, Marvell Technology Group, a producer of storage, communications and consumer semiconductor products, earned the group another $3,000.

He happened upon it while looking at Marvel Worldwide, a publisher of comic books and other media. Marvel did not have as good a performance history as Ross wanted, but Marvell did.

The Stock Market Game is run by SIFMA Foundation, an educational foundation dedicated to fostering knowledge of the financial market. Wren

learned about it through retired Shabbona teacher Ken Iverson. Each team is given a virtual $100,000 to invest in the market.

“The stocks they research are real,” Wren said. “They’re listed on the New York Stock Exchange. They look at what’s happened with the stocks they like over the last year. They see the gains and losses and talk about whether they want to buy them. It’s really fun to hear them talk about it.”

The team led by Jeanette Ringer said they liked Nike at first – until it went down.

Brice Mahnke was another team captain, and said they only invested 17.3 percent of their dollars and kept the rest in cash. Microsoft lost them money, he said, and Carrizo Oil and Puma did well for them.

Nathan Lobb’s team bought shares in 20 companies, mostly oil, but they were not good performers.

“We sold them all except one,” Lobb said, “and it lost $2,648.”

Wren said her students learn a lot playing the game each year, and not just about investing. They also hone their graph interpretation skills and use decimals, fractions, percents, and positive and negative numbers.

“It shows them how math works in the real world,” she said. “It brings math alive.

They are so motivated by the game that they do better in class in general.”

OPINION Why is the 2016 Democratic candidate field so old?

There are five Democrats who have either declared or are thinking about running for president. Three – Joe Biden, Bernard Sanders and Jim Webb – will be over 70 years old on Inauguration Day 2017. Front-runner Hillary Clinton will be nine months short of 70. Only Martin O’Malley, who will turn 54 a couple of days before the 2017 swearing-in, has not reached retirement age already.

In 2008, Democrats had a 47-year-old candidate who mesmerized the party and ran away with the votes of Americans aged 18 to 29. Republicans, meanwhile, ran a 72-year-old man whose reputation was based on heroism in a war 40 years earlier. Youth won.

This time, the situation is reversed. The average age of the Republican field is far below the Democrats, with every candidate younger than Clinton.

The most senior is Jeb Bush, who will be 64 on Inauguration Day. Scott Walker will be 49; Marco Rubio will be 45; Ted Cruz, 46; Rand Paul, 54; Chris Christie, 54; Mike Huckabee, 61; Bobby Jindal, 45.

Although Bush is in the older range, they’re all in the career sweet spot to win the White House.

What accounts for the Democrats’ dramatic change from the party of youth to the party of age?

“It’s the snuffing out of young talent by the strength and size and sheer velocity of the inevitable nominee,” says a well-connected Democratic strategist. “The Clintons took all the air out of the collective Democratic room. There are a lot of people who would be running who are much younger, but they’ve got their future in front of them, and

VIEWS Byron York they don’t want the Clintons to ruin it, in this campaign or after this campaign. So they’re waiting for a moment when there is enough oxygen to run.

“If Hillary Clinton weren’t running, we’d have a field that looks like the Republican field – young and vibrant and diverse.”

The elderly field is dismaying for some Democrats, but not overwhelmingly so.

They believe, rightly, that if a Republican wins in 2016, then everything Barack Obama has accomplished in eight years will be endangered.

To protect those achievements – most notably, national health care – a Democrat must keep the White House. If that is Hillary Clinton, fine.

If Republicans nominate Bush, the oldest GOP candidate with a family name that has been on national ballots since 1980, it’s unlikely age would be an issue in a general election campaign.

But if Scott Walker or Marco Rubio or another relatively young candidate wins the GOP nomination, the voters’ views on age could be put to a real test. Rubio already has presented himself as a young man ready for the future.

Walker would certainly do the same.

They could plausibly frame the race as future versus past.

As for the Democrats, they’re stuck with the candidates they have, working to make the best of their new status as the party of times gone by.

Area teams will face challenges in postseason The assignments are in for the spring sports postseason.

Some of the area teams look like they might have a good shot at advancing beyond the regional stage, and some, by the looks of things, are going to have problems.

Starting with Morris, the Redskins have three defending regional champions, as baseball, softball and girls soccer all advanced last season.

The baseball team is in the Class 3A Ottawa Regional this year, along with LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa, Pontiac and Streator.

Traditionally, a team with strong pitching had a good chance to advance in the postseason, and that’s where the Redskins’ strength lies this season. With the Big Three of Matt Walker, Cody Niewinski and Tom Cheshareck, coach Todd Kein’s club should always be in contention. The question will be if they can score enough runs. If they are able to get out of the regional, they will then head to the Metamora Sectional.

The girls soccer team is in the Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Regional, along with the hosts, Joliet Catholic and Yorkville. Any team with Lincoln-Way in its name is going to be tough, and the Redskins have already played Yorkville to a tie. With two straight regional titles under their belts, Morris and coach Kristin Porter have some experience to draw upon when the going gets tough.

In softball, Morris has already defeated every team in the Class 3A Ottawa Regional – LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa, Plano and Sandwich. Of course, beating a team in the regular season doesn’t always equal a win in the postseason, but it does bode well for the Redskins. Morris hosts the sectional, so if coach Jen Lowery’s club wins the regional, they will have a big advantage in the next round as well.

With a fairly young team, any level of comfort as the stakes get higher will be welcome.

Minooka’s baseball team will be in the Class 4A Joliet

SPRING SPORTS Rob Oesterle West Regional with Bradley-Bourbonnais, Joliet Central, Joliet West and Plainfield South. The Indians are having a bit of a down year by their normal high standards, but they will be mentioned when the topic of “the team you don’t want to play” comes up.

In softball, the Indians, just two years removed from the Class 4A state championship, have been on a roll lately, possibly gearing up for another postseason run.

Getting out of the Joliet Central Sectional won’t be easy, as it’s loaded with teams like Thornton Fractional North, Bloom, Crete-Monee, Homewood-Flossmoor, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Thornton, Joliet Central, Joliet West, Thornton Fractional South, Lockport, Lincoln-Way Central, Providence, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Romeoville, Thornwood, Andrew and Yorkville. Regionals will be hosted by Homewood-Flossmoor, Lincoln-Way East, Providence and Yorkville, with assignments to be determined by seeding later.

The Indians’ girls soccer team will play in the Class 3A Bradley-Bourbonnais Regional, which feeds into the Joliet Central Sectional. Besides the Indians and the hosts, Joliet West and Joliet Central will be in the regional.

Minooka’s boys volleyball team has been a regular visitor to the state finals, although they were tripped up last year in the regional.

They hope to rectify that situation this year, when they host their own regional that feeds into the Alton Sectional.

Other teams in the Minooka Regional are Joliet Catholic Academy, Joliet Central, Joliet West, Lockport, Plainfield Central and Plainfield South.

Coal City drops down to Class 2A in both baseball and

softball after being in Class 3A last season.

It still won’t make things easy, especially on the baseball field, as the Coalers host their own regional with Reed-Custer, Clifton Central, Herscher, Bishop McNamara and Momence. If they are able to survive the regional, the Coalers will play in the ReedCuster Sectional.

In softball, Coal City also hosts a regional, which feeds into the Seneca Sectional.

Besides the Coalers, teams at Coal City will be Reed-Custer, Chicago Longwood, Chicago Christian, Seneca and Wilmington.

The regional hosting trifecta at Coal City continues in Class 1A girls soccer, where the defending regional champ Coalers will play host to Reed-Custer, Herscher and Wilmington, with the winner moving on to the Chicago Christian Sectional.

Seneca’s baseball team will play in the Class 2A Ottawa Marquette Regional, along with the hosts, St. Bede, Spring Valley Hall and Wilmington, with the champion moving to the Reed-Custer Sectional.

Gardner-South Wilmington’s baseball team will host a Class 1A Sectional, but first must win the Dwight Regional, which also features Illinois Lutheran, Grant Park and St. Anne. Newark plays in the Putnam County Regional, which also feeds into the GSW Sectional. The Norsemen will be in a field with the hosts, Earlville, LaMoille, Serena and Somonauk.

In softball, GSW hosts its own regional against Illinois Lutheran, Dwight, Grant Park and Seton Academy.

Newark will be in the Somonauk Regional against Aurora Christian, Westminster Christian, Hinckley-Big Rock and the host school. The winners of both regionals will play in the Iroquois West Sectional.

STAFF REPORTS SENECA – In a back-andforth baseball game Thursday, Seneca ended up on top of Gardner-South Wilmington, 7-5, in nonconference action.

The Fighting Irish (9-9-1) won their fifth straight, but it wasn’t easy. Seneca took a 4-0 lead after two innings, but G-SW rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth. After Brandon Viken homered in the fifth to tie it at 5, Seneca got the lead back in the sixth when Michael Rhodes led off with a single and was bunted home by C.J. Pasdertz. Hunter Simon doubled home Rhodes and Lars Pihl singed in Simon.

Rhodes was 4 for 4 and scored three runs for Seneca, while Pasdertz was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Simon was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Brandon VIken was 2 for 4 with a home run. Rhodes got the win on the mound, in relief of Arik Applebee.

“Rhodes was on base all night to spark our offense,” Seneca coach Kirk Houchin said. “And Pasdertz was 3 for

3, yet was asked to get down the sac in the sixth and executed well. G-SW played very well and battled back. They are well-coached.”

Brendan Elens went 2 for 3 to lead the offense for the Panthers.

Newark 22, Paw Paw 4: Matt Eike had three hits, including a double and a triple, and five RBIs to lead the Norsemen (8-7, 6-3) to the Little Ten win. Kendall Endres had two hits, incuding a double, and five RBIs, while Ty Mulligan had three hits and three RBIs. Students sometimes ask, “I find discarding difficult. What should I do?”

The naive answer is: Throw losers and keep winners. But discards should send information to partner. If you are pitching from a suit not yet led by either side, your card is an attitude signal -- as in this deal.

South opens and closes the auction with three spades. West starts the defense with three rounds of hearts. East plays high-low to show his doubleton, but what should he discard at trick three?

Assuming the third heart is standing up, South presumably has 7-3-2-1, 7-3-1-2, 7-3-3-0 or 7-3-0-3 shape. In the first three cases, East wants partner to shift to a diamond at trick four, not a club. (And in the last, a club shift is vital only if South has exactly queen-doubleton of clubs.) The club ace can wait, but the diamond king needs to be established. So East should discard the diamond nine. He could throw the club four, but if you can afford to, it is better to signal with a high, encouraging card than with a low, discouraging card.

If West shifts to a diamond, the contract fails. If he leads a club, though, declarer gets his diamond loser away on dummy’s club king, with the spade king as the dummy entry.

Lots of options build a healthy, balanced breakfast Dear Dr. K: I’m trying to eat better, but breakfast has me stumped. Could you share some ideas for a healthy, balanced breakfast?

Dear reader: Eating a small, nutritious breakfast is a great way to jump-start the day. Yet many people skip breakfast because they are in a rush, aren’t hungry or are trying to cut calories. That’s a mistake because eating a healthful breakfast has benefits.

Studies suggest eating breakfast regularly can reduce the risk of high cholesterol and decrease insulin resistance.

(Insulin resistance increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.) People who regularly eat breakfast perform better on tests of memory than those who don’t. That doesn’t prove eating breakfast every

Regularly eating breakfast also minimizes impulse snacking and overeating at other meals, and boosts your intake of essential nutrients.

It can help keep your weight in check.

There’s some evidence eating a certain number of calories at breakfast is less likely to cause weight gain than eating that same amount of calories at dinner.

Keep your breakfast moderate in size and focus on produce and whole grains. Minimize full-fat dairy products,

breakfast potatoes and meats.

Another tip: Boil or poach eggs instead of frying them to avoid a lot of extra calories.

To create a healthy, balanced breakfast, include three food groups: lean protein, whole-grain carbohydrates and fruit. Veggies are great, too, but most people aren’t in the habit of eating them in the morning. I’ll admit the only time I have vegetables at breakfast is when they’re folded into an omelet. Because of saturated fat and other unhealthy components, in my opinion bacon, sausage, and other cured and processed breakfast meats should not be a regular part of breakfast. (Of course, they’re fine now and then.)

Think of a healthy breakfast in thirds: one-third pro-

tein plus one-third starch plus one-third fruit.

Here are some breakfast suggestions that follow this basic formula: • whole-grain cereal (at least 5 grams of fiber and less than 5 grams of sugar), plus milk (skim or 1 percent milk or soy milk), plus a small banana or half-cup of berries; • a half-cup of cooked oatmeal with cinnamon, plus 2 tablespoons nuts, plus a halfcup of berries; • one slice 100 percent whole-grain bread, plus 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter, plus a small banana; • breakfast sandwich: 100 percent whole-wheat English muffin or whole-grain mini bagel, plus one egg or slice of low-fat cheese, plus an orange; • breakfast burrito: 1 small

whole-wheat tortilla, plus a scrambled egg or slice of lowfat cheese and salsa, plus a sliced mango; • one slice of whole-wheat toast, plus milk, plus a halfcup of berries.

• a smoothie with plain yogurt, fruit, low-fat milk and a little wheat germ.
