cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After 11 years with We Care of Grundy County, Executive Director Denise Gaska is going to try her hand providing services for a different clientele.

Gaska announced Thursday that she has taken a job with Illinois Valley Industries, a local nonprofDenise it that serves a d u l t s w i t h Gaska development disabilities. Gaska will be the Community Living Director overseeing the supported living and personal support programs.

“It’s time for a change and I’m very confident the perfect person who is going to take We Care into the next stage of de-

velopment is out there,” Gaska said.

Gaska has been We Care’s executive director since May 2006 and has worked at the agency since March 2004.

Gaska’s last day with We Care will be May 29, she said.

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

The new job came as a surprise to everyone, including Gaska. She wasn’t looking.

With this month’s passing of Susan McNabb, previous Community Living Director, Illinois Valley Industries just spread the word about the position opening a couple of weeks ago.

When Gaska heard of the position the opportunity to do direct service again called to her, she said.

Within two weeks she was

hired.

“I’d like to leave on a high note. We’re in this great new building and overcome obstacles to get here and we’re really in a great place. We just need someone with a different set of skills than I have at this time,” Gaska said.

In March, We Care moved into a new, larger location allowing it to now offer a clothes closet as part of its services.

We Care now accepts clothing donations in addition to food donations.

We Care took on debt for the first time, Gaska said, all for the purpose of expanding services.

We Care continues to be in great financial shape, she said, but she hopes the new executive director can concentrate on fundraising to conquer the new building debt.

“We’re disappointed in her decision. Denise did a good job. We were surprised by the decision because we just got in to the building and it’s a time of expansion. But we understand the decision came with a death in the community. ... It fits her interest and skill level,” he said.

“We need to fill it. It’s a critical time in the life of We Care because of the expansion of the building and expansion of programs,” Richardson continued. “So we do want to fill it as soon as possible.”

Gaska said she is not going far and will be more than accessible to the new hire at any time.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com SENECA – All 450 students at Seneca Township High School looked to the sky Thursday morning from assembled bleachers in the school’s parking lot.

As a Lifestar emergency helicopter landed on the softball field and a cloud of dirt rose, Steve Haines, narrator of “Operation Prom Night,” spoke.

“That’s not the helicopter ride you want to be taking,” said Haines, Seneca High School activities director.

Seniors Becca Schroeder, Kassidy Maierhofer, Brant Bodino and Brandon Grossi were involved in a dramatized post-prom, head-on drunken driving accident to warn fellow students of the consequences.

“Help him,” yelled Bob Till, a parent of one of the victims.

“You’re taking too long.”

Seneca, Mazon, Marseilles and Verona-Kinsman fire departments assisted in the staged crash, extracting students from the vehicles.

Bodino was “arrested” after surviving the crash largely unharmed and failing a sobriety test. Beer cans were retrieved from his vehicle.

Fifth-grader spends the day with Morris mayor

Brennan Johnson might not know exactly what he wants to do with his life yet, but he knows what he wants to get done. The Saratoga Elementary School fifth-grader spent Wednesday with Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick as a result of his parents’ winning bid at the Saratoga PTO drawdown fundraiser in March at the Morris VFW. From the moment Brennan stepped in Kopczick’s office, he expressed ideas about street and sidewalk cleaning, and Lisbon Road bridge construction.

“He’s a talker,” said his

mother, Kerri Johnson. “He’s like a little mayor. He observes and is interested in everything.”

It wasn’t a planned bid, his mother said, but when the parents thought about how inquisitive their son is, it made sense.

The ideas were well-received by Kopczick, who informed Brennan of the potential costs associated with each one. Brennan changed his mind about doubling the police force when Kopczick told him it would cost an additional $1.7 million just for salary.

Kopczick and Brennan talked the history and infrastructure of Morris for 45 minutes before touring the Morris Municipal Services Facility.

Brennan was particularly interested in the gavel resting at Kopczick’s seat in council

chambers.

“I’ve only had to use it a few times,” Kopczick said to Brennan. “Sometimes we discuss issues in here and it can get pretty intense. Each council member has the right to speak without interruption.”

Brennan then visited the city’s water and sewer treatment facilities, as well as the Morris Municipal Airport.

“He saw a lot of things most people don’t get to see,” Kopczick said. “It went very well.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grainco FS Inc. is looking to build a new facility north of Morris on Route 47 over the next year.

Grundy County Land Use Committee members heard Wednesday from Grainco FS marketing manager Doug Larson about the new facility, which the company hopes to build about a mile north of the Morris Municipal Airport.

“We provide agriculture supply products, and we are looking at putting in a high-volume, high-blend liquid fertilizer and crop protection facility in Grundy County,” Larson said before the meeting.

Land Use Director Heidi Miller said the facility is keeping with the comprehensive plan for that area, which is for business and light industrial facilities as the area grows.

Grainco FS is looking to buy 23 acres north of Minooka Road along Route 47, which is zoned agriculture and would need to be rezoned to go ahead with the company’s plans.

The Zoning Board of Appeals met Tuesday and sent

the project on with a positive recommendation. The Land Use Committee also voted 5-0 to send it to the full County Board for consideration.

Miller said the company is aware of architectural features that will need to be in place to be approved.

“It’s the gateway into the county. It’s nicer than the typical industrial facility,” Miller said.

Grainco FS, along with Bruce Breymeyer, market development representative with Growmark Inc., said they spoke with the Illinois Department of Transportation to get approval for an entry into the facility and with the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure they are in compliance with rules for the flight pattern to the Morris airport.

“The FAA told us we could have a maximum of 55 feet on any building. We will be keeping the height to 44 feet,” Larson said.

The company also will have to work with environmental health personnel, as well as the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District, before building.

A public hearing has been scheduled for May 19.

Once all the approvals are in place the company hopes to buy the property by July and start construction in the fall, with opening set for spring 2016.

Larson said Grainco FS is facing a crisis as it works to keep pace with the needs of farmers, and other locations are not big enough to fit the company’s growing needs.

He said the business would be moving the Minooka location to the new facility and eventually would move its seed facility at Lisbon Center to the same property.

Larson said it is a seasonal business, but the company expects about 50 to 60 outbound trucks and 40 to 50 inbound trucks a day from the first of April to June each year as farmers start their planting season.

The fertilizer mixing facility will have a 1 million-gallon tank to hold liquid nitrogen that is used in the business.

Larson said the company expects to have 25 full-time employees and 10 seasonal employees at the new location.

Minooka D-201 narrowing kindergarten options Happy 50th Anniversary MINOOKA – Another crowd gathered Wednesday in the Minooka Primary Center gym, anxiously awaiting details on the approved full-day kindergarten program. In March, the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 School Board approved an all-day kindergarten program starting in the 2015-16 school year. How the day would look in terms of classes offered, hours of attendance and busing remained up in the air. A decision was not made this week but could be later this month.

Parents were concerned whether kindergarten students would receive fine arts instruction from the kindergarten teachers or from teachers who specialized in art, music and physical education.

Former Minooka kindergarten teacher Linda Walter, who spoke at the March meeting, spoke again Wednesday.

“Fine arts instruction, when I taught, had to be removed because of the large class sizes, so we were told to do it in our classrooms,” Walter said. “I would put in a tape for the kids to listen to, or do a simple craft, because that is what I knew how to do.

This isn’t fine arts. The kids need professional instruction.”

Joy Dertinger of Minooka has her daughter, Zooey, entering kindergarten next year and has taken a vested interest in fine arts. Dertinger is a musician.

“Teachers are wonderful, but may not be gifted in arts or physical education. I think we owe it to our children to have professional teachers for those classes,” Dertinger said.

The fine arts debate centers on budget. Superintendent Al Gegenheimer gave a presentation that showed what the costs and needs were to launch this program. Adding fine arts will make the days longer, and will require hiring more fine arts teachers. Right now, those teachers report to multiple schools.

Gegenheimer proposed four options to the board, the fourth being the one parents and the board seemed to favor – it would allow for a seven-hour day beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. It would allow two, 25-minute periods of fine arts instruction a day, and the hiring of four additional fine arts staff members at a cost of $200,000.

Gegenheimer said once the money comes in for the additional students in the program in the 2016-17 school year – the state

counts half-day children as half a child, but will count the fullday children as a whole child, thus increasing funding – the money will be available.

Board Member Al Skwarczynski said if the board is going to do full-day kindergarten, then it needs to be done right. “Option four is the best option. Ninety-five percent of our teachers can’t teach fine arts, and that’s not the route we want to do in Minooka,” Skwarczynski said. “The kindergarten teachers, Dr. [Stephen] Palaniuk, Mr. Gegenheimer, the community and the board have put a lot of time into this. We want to do the correct way the first time out.”

Board Member Vicki Allen pointed out to Board President Jim Satorius that Friday is Kindergarten Round-Up in Minooka schools. Parents may want to know what the school day will be like next year.

“Let’s just tell people that the board is anticipating going with option four in the next meeting’s elections,” Satorius said.

The next board meeting is Wednesday at Minooka Primary Center, 305 W. Church St., Minooka. New board members will be sworn in and the new kindergarten option is expected to be voted on.

Michael Kryza, emergency medicine doctor at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, spoke about the process of a full-body exam to search for internal injuries following a crash of this magnitude.

He thought back to earlier in his career in northwest Indiana, when he had to paralyze a patient with medicine so the pain couldn’t be felt and so the patient would stop moving during the exam.

While looking at the patient’s face, he saw a tear stream down.

It was the only movement the victim had.

In another case, he told the students of a victim who was headed to law school and had a full scholarship.

Now her parents are excited she’s learning how to feed herself again.

Kryza said everyone thinks they know their rights, but that changes when you end up in the emergency room.

“It’s our job to do whatever is needed to save your life,” he said. “In 25 seconds, a good pair of our sheers will

cut off that tuxedo you rented or that prom dress you spent $300 on, and you’ll be sedated with a needle in your chest for a collapsed lung.”

He told the students most of them know what not to do, and there’s a handful who would drink even if the Lord came down and told them not to.

“But there’s about 35 of you who can go either way,” Kryza said. “Those of you are the ones I’m talking to. Peer pressure goes both ways. You have to power to influence someone whose making the choice to drink, to not drink.”

Grundy County Coroner John Callahan played a real 911 call of a mother who lost her daughter as they rode in the same car.

Kryza told the crowd if he sees them in the emergency room, it better be for a broken ankle from dancing.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Dr. John B. Roth Jr. has resigned from the Grundy County Board of Health.

Roth was appointed to the board in January 1988 and filled one of the two required medical physician places on the board, according to a news release from the health department.

“I am proud of our collective achievements and the sig-

nificant progress the board has made toward improving the emotional and physical health of our community,” Roth stated in his letter of resignation.

He served on the board until December 2012 and returned in January 2014, serving through April 2015.

Roth saw the health department through 10 administrators and many staff and program changes, according to the news release.

“He was there with encour-

agement when times and budget was difficult and was an advocate for all the programs the health department offers,” the department said in the news release. “He was a liaison between the Morris Hospital and the Health Department to broaden resources and programs and also served on the Grundy County TB board.”

Roth will be missed both by employees of the health department and Board of Health members.

Born: Aug. 22, 1926; in Braceville, IL Died: April 20, 2015; in Bloomington, IL Mary M. Buffo, age 88, a resident of Heritage Health Care in Dwight, and formerly of Braidwood, passed away Monday, April 20, 2015, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in

Bloomington.

Born August 22, 1926, in Braceville, Mary Margaret was a daughter of the late Louis and Frances (Feltenz) Buffo. She was raised on the family farm and went to work at the Rockdale Navy Yards, before gaining

employment with the Joliet Arsenal and later Grinchuck Pants Factory.

Mary was most known however as a beautician, and worked locally in Braidwood most of her life.

She played the accordion and the guitar, and was part of a small combo band in the 1950’s. Mary also enjoyed traveling domestically in her earlier years.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Braidwood, and was proud to be a devoted Catholic.

Survivors include her sister, Grace Hatch of Braidwood; nephews and niece, Gerald Hatch, Jr. of Wilmington, Louis Glen Hatch of Braidwood, Francine Palmer of Emington,

Wayne L. McComb of Morris, Kenneth McComb of St. Anne and George McComb of Verona; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dominic Buffo; and sister, Agnes McComb.

The family will receive friends at Immaculate Conception Church, 110 S. School Street in Braidwood, on Monday, April 27, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service 11:00 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Show Reddy Allam officiating. Private family burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Braidwood.

M.H. Abrams, Norton anthology founder, dead at age 102

Abrams, an esteemed critic, teacher and tastemaker who helped shape the modern literary canon as founding editor of the Norton Anthology of English Literature and joined the elite himself by writing one of the 20th century’s most acclaimed works of criticism, has died.

He was 102.

Abrams’ death was confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday by Cornell University President David J. Skorton, who declined to give details. According to the website of the Ithaca-based university, where he was a longtime member of the English department, Abrams died Tuesday at the retirement community Kendal at Ithaca. No cause of death was given.

While at Cornell in the 1950s, Abrams was asked by publisher W.W. Norton to lead a team of editors compiling excerpts of vital English works.

The first edition of the Norton Anthology came out in 1962 and was an immediate success.

Abrams stayed on through seven editions, into his 80s, as the book became required reading – or perusing – for millions of college students.

Abrams also wrote several books, notably the 1953 publication “The Mirror and the Lamp,” a groundbreaking work of literary theory that celebrated Byron, Keats and other British Romantic poets and popularized a field of study that emphasized how au-

In the years before “The Mirror and the Lamp,” the Romantics had been effectively denigrated by T.S. Eliot, who found Byron to have a “disorderly mind, and an uninteresting one” and believed Keats and Shelley “not nearly such

great poets as they are supposed to be.” He valued reason and restraint, stating that a poem’s meaning should be clear.

But Abrams countered that the Romantics changed and enriched the history of poetry by freeing the emotions and imagination. The Romantics broke from the ideal of capturing the real world (a mirror) and instead composed “lamps,” illuminating the poet’s personal vision.

“The first test any poem

must pass is no longer, ‘Is it true to nature ...?’ ” Abrams wrote, “but a criterion looking in a different direction; namely, ‘Is it sincere? Is it genuine?’ ” Abrams’ other books included the influential social and political history “Natural Supernaturalism” and “The Milk of Paradise.” In July 2012, the essay collection “The Fourth Dimension of a Poem” was published to mark his 100th birthday. In July 2014, he received a National Arts Medal for “expanding our perceptions of the Romantic tradition and broadening the study of literature.”

A son of Russian Jewish immigrants, Meyer Howard Abrams was born and raised in Long Branch, New Jersey.

As a child, he spoke Yiddish until age 5 and loved reading so much he would borrow up to three books at a time from the library and then return the next day for more. He was a scholarship student at Harvard University – and one of the few Jews then permitted at Harvard – and later won a scholarship to Cambridge University. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1945 and established himself as the teacher of a popular introductory survey class, with students including such future literary stars as the novelist Thomas Pynchon and the critic Harold Bloom.

Known fondly to Bloom and others as “Mike” Abrams, he modeled his work for Norton on his literature course. At the time Abrams was commissioned for the anthology, each book a student read in many

English departments “was treated as an object in itself, to be read and interpreted and admired independently of its historical setting,” he told The Associated Press in 1999.

Abrams and his colleagues “believed that to understand literature you had to understand its place in history and culture.”

Abrams experimented with content and form. When he was an undergraduate at Harvard, anthologies were grim, square volumes with double-column printing on each page – printed as if the verses of Homer were no different from a table of prime numbers. Abrams innovated with single columns and the kind of fine, thin paper used for highpriced Bibles, making the anthology portable. The preface of the first edition promised a volume that “can not only be carried everywhere, but read anywhere, in one’s own private room, in the classroom, or under a tree.”

The anthology was conceived when the canon was overwhelmingly white and male, but Abrams and his fellow editors opened up over the following decades, including women and “post-colonial” authors such as Salman Rushdie, Chinua Achebe and V.S. Naipaul.

Norton, meanwhile, issued numerous separate anthologies that included volumes on African-American writers, Latinos and nonfiction authors. Abrams married Ruth Gaynes in 1937. They had two children.

The contributions were used to provide training for firefighters at the prestigious Texas Annual Fire Training School conducted at Texas A&M University, according to a news release from the company.

“Without the corporate partnership with LyondellBasell, our firefighters would not have the ability or opportunities to attend this high-caliber training,” Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said in the news release.

Each year, thousands of fire service personnel from munic-

ipalities and industries participate in intensive weeklong training courses, which enable participants to acquire new skills by conducting hands-on incident response training.

“The Texas training school is impressive in not only size but in the wide variety of training scenarios,” LyondellBasell Morris Complex site Manager Brian Angwin said in the news release. “Because of our strong relationship with our local first responders, we wanted to provide exposure to this unique yet invaluable education.”

The Morris Complex is one of the largest petrochemical facilities in the Midwest.

Redskins shut out in loss to Geneseo

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For most of the first 10 minutes of Thursday’s game against Geneseo, the Morris girls soccer team dominated the action.

Unfortunately for the Redskins, they were unable to get a goal out of multiple scoring opportunities, and Geneseo began to move control back to its side.

After the Maple Leafs’ Shelby Cleary scored on a breakaway with 31:40 remaining in the first half, any sort of momentum gained by Morris shifted to Geneseo’s direction, and the Maple Leafs did not relinquish it.

Cleary finished with a hat trick as Geneseo handed Morris (6-4-1, 0-4-1) a 5-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 defeat.

Early in the game, however, was all Morris. In the first

five minutes, the Redskins got shots on goal from Amanda Grant, Casi Valdez and Alexa Rain.

Later in the first half, shots came from Emily Burling, Mya Shannon and Katherine Gallick, but Geneseo goalkeeper Taylor Magerkurth was able to keep the Redskins from scoring.

“Soccer is all about flow, and in the first 10 minutes, I thought we had the right flow,” Morris coach Kristin Porter said. “We really dominated the ball early, but we just didn’t get it in the net. If we capitalize on just one of those scoring chances we had early, it might have been a different game.”

As it was, however, Geneseo took a 1-0 lead, which it held until Lauren Coulter scored unassisted with 7:38 to go until halftime.

Last week, I spent a couple of days talking to my class of students about the importance of chemical technology and how it has changed our lives.

The first part of our discussion focused on what in fact technology is.

According to Mr. Webster, technology is the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems.

So often, we assume that technology involves electronic gadgets. Things like phones, computers, tablets, etc. Not always. At some point in history, the claw hammer was considered new technology.

Most often, when something new is invented, it is spurred by the need to solve a problem. Some frustrated individual was tired of dealing with the same perplexing issue and finally did something about it.

Other times, a technologi-

cal invention is driven by the need to make an existing technology better. The outdoors industry has seen its share of these innovative products in the past several years.

The first one that pops into my mind is the advent of the sports action camera. Most of you might refer to this device by a popular name brand, Go Pro. These tiny, seemingly indestructible, and easy to operate cameras have literally changed the way in which we view the outdoors.

These trendy video cameras have made it possible to take point-of-view shots never before seen. Their high definition images can be found all over the Internet.

You will run across amazing videos of sky divers, kayakers, and even hunters and fisherman. Yes, the sports actions camera launched the outdoors world into a new realm and in turn has explod-

If I had to guess, I would say that participation in some of the more adventurous sports might even be up in numbers, and in a large part because of the drama of watching the footage from a sports camera.

The next item that I thought has made a huge difference in the outdoor sports is the creation of microfibers and other man-made synthetic materials. The days of wearing plastic rain suits is long over.

The clothing manufacturers are cranking out now include breathable, lightweight, waterproof, quiet, and comfortable fabrics which have changed the way we dress for

the outdoors.

Some of my hunting clothes are the most relaxing that I own. These same materials have made their appearance across all aspects of the outdoors.

There are more anglers each year that are wearing long sleeve shirts in the heat of summer. Not because they are cold, but because the materials are protecting them from sun exposure.

The last area of technology that I have seen change the outdoors, and in a major way, is definitely the Internet. Like all aspects of life, the end-user or consumer, is more savvy now than ever before. This has not only changed how we buy outdoor products, but it has also changed our level of knowledge.

Before the advent of the Internet, the skill levels of sportsmen really varied.

Now, with so many tips and

techniques available at the press of a button, the overall depth of understanding has increased drastically. A pro angler may have success with something at a tournament, and by the end of the week, the entire world has the chance to know and learn from it.

Yes, there have been many technological advances in the outdoors scene.

It seems the rolling stone of innovation keeps moving quicker and quicker. Who knows what will break onto the scene in the next 12 months, let alone the next decade.

One this is for sure, it will be exciting to see. But when it all comes down to it, the common factor is still a love for the outdoors.

Hajduk helps Minooka get past Plainfield South

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Alyssa Hajduk certainly did all that she could on the mound to help Minooka’s softball team in Thursday’s contest with Ridge Road rival Plainfield South.

But Cougars pitcher Jordan Harbacek was also doing a good job of shutting down the Indians, so Hajduk had to take matters into her hands at the plate, as well.

The junior singled to start off both of her team’s innings where they scored, including the decisive two-run fifth, to cap a 3 for 3 day and she also tossed a three-hitter to help Minooka claim a 3-1 Southwest Prairie Conference win over South. Hajduk allowed leadoff hits in the first and fifth and then yielded a two-out single in the seventh in addition to striking out nine. The Cougars

(8-6, 3-2) scored their lone run in the first but the Indians (9-6, 5-1) answered with a run in the bottom of that frame.

That set the stage for the fifth when Hajduk singled to right, was sacrificed to second

by Alexa Zito and came home on a double to left by Steffanie Pershey, who also was 3 for 3.

Shannon Stuchly then reached on an error, which scored the final run.

“I’m very happy,” Hajduk said. “I just tried to mix everything up and not get into a routine. Having my defense behind my back is always a confidence-booster, but then sometimes I need to come in clutch with a strikeout. And getting that last hit was definitely a good start to our big inning. I’m used to the pressure from travel ball, so none of that really gets to me.

Payday loans need stiff regulation from Congress Payday lending is based on a business model that earns profit from making high-interest loans to poor Americans who often can’t pay them back. A new plan from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers promising ideas to make the industry more humane and accountable.

But only Congress, not regulators, has the power to limit loan interest rates and impose other rules on an industry that too often is predatory.

The bureau’s proposal would require payday lenders to make sure consumers can pay back any loan made to them, by preconfirming a borrower’s ability to pay or by offering affordable payment plans.

Payday lenders say such

rules defeat the purpose of the loans, which is to provide credit to people who can’t borrow from traditional lenders.

Yet studies found that the loans often create more problems for borrowers. The majority of them must get additional loans just to pay back their initial ones. Many end up owing more in interest rates and fees than the original value of their loans.

This month, 57 leaders of foundations, including The Pittsburgh Foundation, signed a letter urging the consumer bureau to get tough on payday lenders.

If the lenders sincerely desire to help, not exploit, struggling consumers, they should not fight reasonable regulation.

The U.S. Supreme Court nears a crossroads on samesex marriage. In a recent LifeWay Research survey, 6 in 10 Americans disagreed with the statement that “marriage should be defined and regulated by the state” and 49 percent agreed that “religious weddings should not be connected to the state’s definition

However, 71 percent of pastors disagreed with the statement, “Clergy should no longer be involved in the state’s licensing of marriage.”

At the conservative journal First Things, 444 clergy and lay leaders had, as of earlier this week, signed “The Marriage Pledge,” promising: “We will no longer sign government-provided marriage certificates. We will ask couples to seek civil marriage separately from their church-related vows and blessings.”

The Rev. Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of

the Southern Baptist Convention, recently wrote that any church that embraces the sexual revolution is “no longer a church of Jesus Christ.” Yet a pastor who signs a marriage license is “not affirming the state’s definition of marriage,” he argued, but bearing witness to “the state’s role in recognizing marriage as something that stands before and is foundational to society.”

This topic is sure to be discussed as clergy and activists gather in Washington, D.C., for the April 25 March for Marriage. Reardon noted that his church’s national leader, while not directly addressing the marriage-license issue, sent a pastoral letter to his bishops, clergy and laypeople noting that marriage debates cannot be avoided.

The upcoming Supreme Court decision could “mark a powerful affirmation of marriage between one man and one woman ... or it can initiate a direction which the Holy Orthodox Church can never embrace,” stated Metropolitan Joseph of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.

At his altar, said Reardon, this means, “I cannot represent the State of Illinois anymore. ... I’m not making a political statement. I’m making a theological statement.”

In today’s deal, cover the South and West hands. South is in four spades. West leads the heart two.

How should East plan the defense?

In the auction, West used the Unusual No-trump, showing at least 5-5 in the two lowest-ranking unbid suits: clubs and diamonds. North just blasted into four spades, hoping that if the opponents sacrificed in five clubs, partner would be able to double.

When West leads the heart two, East knows that it is either a singleton or from three cards. When you face an either-or position like this, usually the bidding will tell you which it is.

Here, if West started with 0-3-5-5, South would have begun with an unlikely 7-1-1-4. If West held 2-1-5-5, though, South would have 5-3-1-4, which is much more probable.

So, East wins the first trick and (tries to) give his partner a heart ruff at trick two. And because East’s potential re-entry is in clubs, the lower-ranking of the other two side suits, he carefully leads his heart three, which sends a so-called suit-preference signal.

Now the pressure is on West.

After ruffing at trick two, he must trust his partner and shift to a low club. East will win with his king and deliver a second heart ruff to defeat the contract. ******
