MORRIS – After a postponement was granted in March, Greenhouse Group LLC is set to make its case next week to the Morris Planning Commission to operate a medical marijuana dispensing business in Morris. A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday during the Morris Planning Commission meeting in the council chambers at the Morris Municipal Services Facility, 700 N. Division St. The planning commission will make a positive, negative or no recommendation on giving the company a conditional permitted use permit, after hearing from the company’s representatives, Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said.

Greenhouse Group still is looking to open the business at 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It Again” video store.

“The group is interested in the frontage of Route 47 because it’d be convenient for people from all over Grundy and Kendall to find,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

“They hope to have a positive recommendation from the Planning Commission.”

The recommendation from the commission will then go for a vote on a future Morris City Council agenda.

Greenhouse Group was awarded a license by the state in February to be shared by Grundy and Kendall counties.

The prospective location is adjacent to the Forte Arts Center, which is a preschool, dance and music studio for children.

In March, owner Pam Simpson said she isn’t against medical marijuana but is against the dispensary being near the studio for security concerns.

She said at that time she intended to speak at the public hearing. Cheshareck said in a situation like this, neighboring properties can file a protest against the request. Simpson’s protest is on file.

The Illinois House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday to extend the state’s medical marijuana program beyond 2017. The original legislation was signed in 2013 is scheduled for repeal Jan 1, 2018. The proposed measure – which would extend the program four years from when the first dispensary begins officially operating – now heads to Senate for a vote.

Simpson could not immediately be reached Wednesday for comment.

After opening the door, a group of students who’ve been in Hankins’ classes together all four years of high school are shaping clay into their latest creations, cracking jokes and learning where hard work gets them.

Several students dedicated themselves so much recently that they won blue first-place ribbons April 11 at the 26th annual Ottawa Art League Town & Country Youth Art Show.

Winners are eligible to exhibit this fall at the State Town & Country Show in Champaign.

“When it comes to ceramics and art in general, she’s a rock star,” Superintendent Pat Halloran said of Hankins.

Some Grundy schools’ state funding will return

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Some Grundy County-area school districts will be receiving state funding originally thought to be cut from their budgets.

After the state cut funding to school districts and state agencies by 2.25 percent, some local school districts recently found out a portion of state funding would be returned to their budgets.

“With the initial state aid cut we would lose about $55,000,” Morris Elementary District 54 Superintendent Teri Shaw said. “We’ve found out we will get a portion of that back.”

District 54 is funded 42.3 percent by property taxes and 23.4 percent by General State Aid. In March, the Legislature approved a pair of bills that made mid-year cuts to this year’s fiscal budget. The bills

addressed closing a $1.6 billion hole in the state budget, including a 2.25 percent cut across all state agencies and programs.

Those cuts meant the Illinois State Board of Education would lose about $150 million from General State Aid. Legislation also provided a lump sum of $97 million to help fill the GSA loss for school districts in the most dire fiscal conditions.

Morris District 54, Morris Community High School District 101, Braceville School District 75, Gardner Grade School District 72C, and Gardner-South Wilmington High School 73 are included in the list of schools in financial distress.

District 54 and District 75 will receive 95 percent of the cut funds back, while the other districts will get 73.6 percent of the funds back.

Shaw said instead of the original $55,000 cut in GSA,

“Originally we didn’t think we’d see this, so that helps offset the reduction,” Halloran said.

Shaw said if the state were to pay the GSA at 100 percent, the district wouldn’t be on the financial watch list again.

According to the ISBE website, the state has not paid 100 percent of state aid since fiscal year 2009.

Land Use department cuts 4 percent of budget

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Land Use Director Heidi Miller was able to trim 4 percent from her department’s budget, 1 percent more than was requested by the Grundy County Board.

Miller told the Land Use Committee on Wednesday she exceeded the 3 percent cut the board asked department heads to aim for.

“Our budget is not huge, but we were able to make small changes that totaled more than the $7,750 budget cut we were asked for,” Miller said.

On March 25, Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter sat down with elected officials and department heads and asked them to see where they could trim their budget, asking each to make cuts of 3 percent without losing jobs.

Miller said the 4 percent decrease was something she felt her department could live with as long as they don’t continue to have problems with the Land Use vehicle or gas prices don’t rise dramatically.

“For the nine years I’ve budgeted for this department, we’ve always been in the black,” Miller told the committee.

Miller also said they may make some small changes to the department’s fee schedule, which hasn’t been updated since 2013.

Students, faculty and community members exchanged knowledge on environmental, sustainable and mindful-living topics. The event included an Earth Day Sustainability Expo, a Recycled Art Show and a sustainability poetry reading.

The expo included exhibits about Earth-friendly cleaning products, local raw

honey and Helpers of Mother Earth – a local nonprofit that conducts area litter cleanups throughout the year.

Students should go “beyond green” when considering ways to befriend Mother Earth, said Maria Anna Rafac, professor and program adviser at JJC. The expo is designed to get students thinking about “creating a culture of sustainability” on campus through economic, social and environmentally friendly means.

The medieval-themed castle has a set of soup tureens with a dragon on one, a princess on another and a knight on the largest one. Halcomb said she’s been taking art classes since her time at Saratoga Elementary School. After years of hard work, she was accepted to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and might major in ceramic engineering, designing plates and other dishes.

Senior Maggie Bates won first place in the Three Media category, which shows an interesting use of a chosen medium, an idea that is particularly creative, or a new and creative way of looking at an old idea, according to the show program. The class has a way of not only bringing the best out of the students, but forming a lasting bond.

“I didn’t like these kids to start off, but we’re now lifelong friends,” Bates said. “When I was dealing with some personal things, this is the class that kept me calm.”

Bates was disappointed for future students that the school might not have Ceramics 4 next year because of how beneficial each class before it was to her. But it’s a product of small student enrollment and what fits Hankins’ schedule, Principal Kelly Hussey said.

“We consult with every department and see what classes we can offer,” Hussey said.

Hankins said this is probably the last year she teaches Ceramics 3 and 4, as she retires in 2016. Most of the students who won ribbons were seniors. When the school hires Hankins’ replacement, all art classes still will be offered.

Which ones are taught is to be determined.

“Next January is our registration time,” Hussey said. “If it fits with what the next teacher is capable of teaching within the schedule and there’s necessary interest, it will be taught.”

Within the art program, there are a different number of students in each class. Hussey said the number of students in Ceramics II is large enough that going forward, Ceramics 3 and 4 will be offered.

“There will definitely be Ceramics 3 and 4 classes again,” Hussey said.

The challenge, Halloran said, will be finding someone with the same teaching ability

Hankins’ has.

Another challenge is forming the family environment within her classroom.

The strength of the art program at Morris High School goes back decades and can be tied to the hire of Hankins.

Hankins said she’s had students from years ago who come back to visit. Recent graduates often come back during their college’s spring break week.

Dalton Snyder, a freshman, comes to Hankins’ class to work on ceramics during his study hall. Hankins taught Snyder’s parents and grandparents and has been to family weddings. Snyder said he plans to enter art shows in the future.

“It’s always fun in here,” Snyder said. “She’s great lady and a great teacher.”

Morris High School is hosting the Delta Phi Art Show next month where people can get an up close look at students art.

Pam Dilday, student activities director, said the art competition is a way for students and facility to create art out of recycled materials.

Rachel Wilkey, 20, said she liked one piece titled “Toxic

Sea” by Shoshana McClarence, which depicts the ocean floor, a coral reef and how the landscape might evolve to deal with the massive amounts of plastic and other materials floating in the sea.

“I thought it was really interesting,” Wilkey said.

“There was some really indepth materials used.”

The work included a canvas found in an art room trash can, which the artist patched up and adapted, CDs, an old belt, reused styrofoam, seashells found and recycled from previous projects and recycle bins, according to the artist’s statement.

OPINION Assisted suicide’s grave implications “It’s scary and it knocks the breath out of you.”

Maggie Karner is not unrealistic or “romantic” about death and dying. And she should know. “It takes a long time to come to terms with a disease – especially a terminal illness. And then you start thinking, ‘OK, this is the new me. This is the new normal.

And I can still appreciate every moment.’ ” Earlier this spring, when I co-hosted a National Review Institute panel on assisted suicide with Ryan T. Anderson of the Heritage Foundation, we began it with a video of Karner. No speech is as compelling as her testimony.

Karner is dying. Last year, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. After chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer cells are growing again. Karner has seen tragedy before. In the video from the Patients Rights Action Fund, Karner talks about her father, who suffered an injury to his spine.

His accident was devastating. He became quadriplegic, after leading a very active life.

Karner’s family wondered how he was “going to exist without the use of his arms and legs.”

Six in 10 Americans do not support assisted suicide, according to a new Marist poll commissioned by the Knights of Columbus, and a large majority – including supporters – has deep concerns about the effect it will have on the practice of medicine.

But physician-assisted suicide is based on the lie that some lives are unworthy to be lived. And that notion has grave implications for health care in America.

The Marist poll shows that very few people consider legalizing physician-assisted suicide a priority. So why is it being considered in almost 20 states this year? A lot of the media coverage of assisted suicide has profiled beautiful young women, points out Sr. Constance Veit of the religious group Little Sisters of the Poor. But it’s the people her organization serves in more than 30 nations who are most affected by assisted suicide’s implications – the elderly. She tells of family reconciliations that have happened during final days, with “the room of a dying person almost [becoming] the spiritual center of our house at that point.”

What legacy will we leave here? Assisting the suicide of medicine or cherishing life, especially the lives of the most weak and vulnerable?

Not enough progress on VA wait times It’s unacceptable that a year after a scandal broke wide open at the Department of Veterans Affairs over wait times at VA medical facilities and other problems that our veterans are still having too many long waits for appointments.

Veterans of the armed services should get the timely care that is the nation’s obligation to them.

But the problems at the VA were severe and long-simmering, and a year is not enough time to resolve them all.

Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Bob McDonald was a good choice to lead the agency after the

previous secretary’s resignation in the wake of the scandal, and he’s had his boots on the ground going to hospitals, talking to veterans and hiring new personnel to improve care and shorten wait times.

Although North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis has talked about possible “public-private” solutions, the Republican inclination toward turning some government services over to the “private sector” is not the answer.

The obligation to veterans is the government’s to address.

How can the VA be improved? Investment has been made; more needs to be. At good facilities such as the VA

complex in Durham, North Carolina, lessons on organization can be shared with other, more troubled facilities around the country.

Many veterans have high praise for the care they get at VA facilities, witnessed by the many thousands who have been cared for in Durham. And there is no question that, although wait times statistics have not improved enough, the organization itself is better and less hampered by bureaucracy.

Straightening out the VA is still going to take some time, even though the new leadership has a sense of urgency about it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – JCA leadoff hitter Reilly Jo Swanson said she was waiting for her softball coach, Dave Douglas, to say something as she rounded third base in her brand-new home run trot.

“I was hoping he would say something, and he didn’t say anything,” Swanson said. “But he did give it that nod of approval.”

Douglas laughed and said he didn’t want to be mean and say something about how the wind was blowing out.

Swanson walloped her three-run homer to straightaway center field Wednesday to give the Angels a 3-1 second-inning inning lead, and JCA went on to blitz nonconference foe Coal City, 12-2, in five innings.

“It was my first homer.

I never hit one before, so I didn’t know,” Swanson said when asked if she felt the ball was gone when she connected.

“I was rounding second base hard, and then I saw what it was. I was so excited.

“I’m going to try to do that again sometime. But really, my game is to put the ball in play.”

“Reilly has been hitting the ball hard and she is playing a solid second base,” Douglas said. “We’re playing better than we were a couple of weeks ago, and the thing I’m happy about is the girls are making solid contact and they’re getting rewarded. They’re finding gaps and hitting it over the fences.”

After Swanson’s homer, Brenna Garland singled and scored on Meghan Harrison’s triple to make it 4-1.

STAFF REPORTS BOURBONNAIS – Two weeks ago, the 8U Morris Tomahawks baseball team won the Team Exposure Spring Fling Tournament in Bourbonnais.

The Tomahawks outscored their opponents, 62-2, in four victories, to win the tournament title.

In the process, the Tomahawks have continued their undefeated season to 10-0.

In the first game of the tournament, Morris beat the Bourbonnais Braves, 16-0. Jack Wheeler, Finn Hackett and Colin Pfeifer each hit a home run. Griffin Zweeres and Luc Rink were both 3 for 3 at the plate. Brett Bounds, Pfeifer, and Hackett dominated the mound to hold the Braves hitless.

In the next game, Morris picked up a 14-0 win over New Lenox Red. Merek Klicker led the charge, going 3 for 3 with a home run, while Wheeler and Hackett each added another home run. Tomahawks pitchers Wheeler, Cody Del Favero and Rink combined to allow just two hits.

Morris followed that game with a 19-2 win over Lincoln-Way Prospects. Payton Sterritt led off with a home run, and joined Bounds and Zweeres in going 3 for 3 at the plate. Del Favero and Bounds each added a home run. Stevie Wagner, Zweeres, and Sterritt continued the trend dominating the mound.

Morris soccer suffers tough loss to DeKalb

By JOHN BUTKUS Shaw Media correspondent DEKALB – Tuesday’s girls soccer game turned out to be a defensive battle between DeKalb and Morris as they traded possession, but the Barbs earned a 1-0 win.

DeKalb striker Natalie VaughnLow had the game’s lone goal that came in the 13th minute. Outside of that goal, there were not many shots taken between the Northern Illinois Big 12 East opponents in the first half. In the midst of a defensive game like this, it is important to capitalize on scoring chances when they come.

“Connecting with our teammates is important,” Vaughn-Low said. “We’ve been focusing in practice on control and spreading the field with our passes.”

When the final whistle blew, Morris (5-3-1) had five shots on goal, and the Barbs (7-5) produced 13 shots – most of those scoring opportunities came from sophomore Vaughn-Low. Morris produced a handful of shots early in the game, but that was not the case in the second half.

From the middle of the first half until the end of the game, Morris did not create a shot on the DeKalb defense.

Morris coach Kristen Porter pointed out what was not working for her team in the second half.

“We were not opening up on top and we were too cramped on the field,” Porter said. “When you are too close together like that, it is hard to generate passes to each other.”

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married for almost 31 years. We have had a good marriage, but for the last couple of years, my husband has told me I snore when we go to sleep at night.

He is a very light sleeper, and understandably, it wakes him and then he wakes me to make me stop.

This goes on all night long.

Needless to say, neither of us is happy in the morning.

We have started sleeping in separate rooms.

The issue I am having now is, my husband will be retiring in a few months and he wants us to do a lot of traveling, mainly cruising.
