The agreement is to reduce costs through possible contracts for bleacher inspection, asbestos inspection, boiler water treatment, waste management services, HVAC maintenance and inspection.

can work together to purchase in bulk or get discounts from providers who offer services to all of the districts.

“This is just one component of the things we put together including busing that has saved the taxpayers $1 million per year,” Shaw said.

Once a request for proposal (RFP) is issued, a contract will be awarded to the vendor that provides the specified service at the most economical price.

The superintendents or buildings and grounds director of each district must agree to the services, terms and condi-

tions included in the RFP. This contract is in effect for the 2015-2016 school year and can be extended with approval of all district boards.

In other board business, outgoing president Hastings and Vice President Carol Narvick were presented with a glass apple for their service and dedication to the district.

Both Hastings and Narvick did not run for another term on the school board.

The reorganizational meeting and seating of newly elected board members will be at 6 pm. Tuesday.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Eighth-graders from throughout the county were invited Tuesday to attend the Community Foundation of Grundy County and the Grundy Area Vocational Center’s 8th Grade Career Fair.

The students met and discussed career options with professionals from a host of fields, from health care to cosmetology and automotive technology to criminal justice.

“The purpose was to get eighth-graders looking at careers,” said Devan Gagliardo, program director of the Community Foundation. “I couldn’t be happier with the turnout.”

Jillian Munsell, an eighthgrade student at Immaculate Conception School in Morris, said she talked to as many exhibitors as she could while her class was there.

“I looked at as much as I could. I played a lot of the games they had, and I learned how each company had different positions that I never thought about,” she said. “I learned that companies like Nicor and Exelon have positions like environmentalists and attorneys. I thought they just had engineers and technicians.”

Gagliardo said showing the students the different types of jobs within local companies was one of the goals of the event.

Anna Misener, an eighth-grader from Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Middle School, said the career fair was a good experience. She has always known she wants to go into a medical profession, but didn’t realize all the jobs that were available in that field.

“I know what I want to be, a cardiothoracic or pediatric surgeon,” Misener said. “But this helped me to see what else there is. I really liked it.”

She said she was able to meet different people she wouldn’t have had access to and she appreciated having the venue to do so.

The experience is great for students who will be entering high school, ICS Principal Kim DesLauriers said. It not only lets them see what careers are out there, but also shows what GAVC has to offer as they enter high school.

“GAVC for some kids is a marvelous thing,” DesLauriers said. “They are starting to think about what they want to be, and this helps plant the seeds.”

He said giving the students the tools is what will lead them to a career choice sooner,

LOCAL NEWS NEW LENOX – Police have arrested a man they say is responsible for two recent armed robberies in New Lenox and Channahon.

New Lenox Deputy Police Chief Robert Pawlisz said in a statement that detectives linked Kellen Bean, 31, of New Lenox, to robberies on Kellen Bean April 13 and April 14.

Police used a warrant to search his residence in the 900 block of Chelsea Court and recovered evidence related to the New Lenox robbery, Pawlisz said.

Bean was taken into custody Tuesday at Silver Cross Hospital, where he was seeking medical assistance for a minor issue, according to Pawlisz.

“This investigation is an excellent example of two police agencies coming together to make our communities safer,” Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said in a news release.

Bean was arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery and armed robbery, police said.

Council approves conflict of interest waiver for Brisbin Road upgrades

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris City Council approved Monday a formality regarding representation for the county to move forward with proposed Brisbin Road improvements.

The City Council approved a conflict of interest waiver for Hinshaw and Culbertson LLP to represent Grundy County in the intergovernmental agreement regarding Brisbin Road improvements.

The Grundy County Finance Committee approved the waiver last week and it is set to go next month before the full Grundy County Board.

Grundy County Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman told the County Board committee last week an expert is needed to look over the agreement so the county’s potential revenue is not over-

looked.

But Hinshaw and Culbertson has represented the city of Morris since 2001 on Community Landfill litigation, which is in regard to proper closing procedures of the landfill.

Therefore, the waiver is needed.

Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said it’s standard procedure and a requirement of the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys to disclose prior working relationships.

“Both the city and the county are acknowledging the firm’s representation of the city in the landfill matter,” Belt said. “It’s consent to allow

Budget, contract bring change to Morris Police

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Changes on several fronts are coming for the Morris Police Department.

The Morris City Council approved Monday a three-year renewal of the patrol officers union contract with Morris Police Department Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 63.

“It was a smooth negotiation, and I don’t say that often,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said Tuesday. “No attorneys were present. We discussed it from both sides, and everything was agreeable.”

Included in the agreement

is a 3 percent raise for officers, with a reopener clause next year to discuss only wages, Kopczick said. Officers now can get time off for the death of a stepparent, a matter that had not come up until a recent passing, Kopczick said.

The agreement brings the option for experienced officers training a new hire to choose either 50 cents more an hour of training, which was past standard, or having two hours off with pay per 12 hours of field training. Officers will need to elect which option before training a new hire. Two new officers are expected to start this year after two sergeants retired in the spring, which

will bring the department to a full staff again. The City Council also approved the fiscal 2015-16 budget Monday, a necessary step before hiring two new officers.

The Morris Board of Fire and Police Commissioners uses the Standard and Associates’ National Police Officer Selection Test to determine the eligibility list. The board selects the candidate from the application process, which can be found at theblueline.com.

Police Chief Brent Dite said the only deviation from the list of top new applicants is if someone is a certified officer already. The application deadline is May 4. Dite said a writ-

ten test will take place May 16 at the Morris Police Department.

With the budget approved, the next step toward replacing four squad cars is in place.

When the next batch of Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles makes it to the fleet, two older vehicles will be recycled.

Kopczick said one of those two cars is headed to the Morris Municipal Airport to be used as a courtesy car, and the other will be used as the fire marshal’s car. The cars will have police modifications removed.

“We recycle the vehicles when we can,” Dite said.

“These police cars see mostly

stop-and-go city miles. When they’re recycled to other departments, they don’t see nearly as many miles on average, ,and it extends the life of the vehicle. One hundred thousand city miles are rough on a car.”

The department has a preference for SUVs, and only has one Ford Crown Victoria remaining in its fleet, a 13-year-old detective car with deteriorating mechanical and exterior, Dite said.

“The department uses SUVs as a means to respond in all types of weather, especially in the outlying areas of the city,” Dite said. “ The Ford Interceptor works well for us.”

outage that began March 30.

More than 2,000 Exelon employees and contractors performed more than 8,500 carefully choreographed activities during the outage, according to a news release from the sta-

tion, including safety inspections and equipment tests, along with plant refurbishments and improvements.

“This planned refueling and maintenance outage afforded us the opportunity to upgrade

a number of key components that will help the station run more efficiently and effectively for another 18-month operating cycle,” Mark Kanavos, Braidwood Station Site vice president, said in the news re-

“In eight years or less, these kids will be in the workforce,” he said. “If they go to college it helps to know what they want to go for.”

Grant Hatteberg, an eighthgrade student at ICS, has always known he wants to go into criminal justice and law enforcement. The fair allowed him to speak to people in the field he is looking at, and get a better understanding of what is ahead for him in school.

“It was a good experience,” he said. “I got a better understanding of what is in my future.”

He was excited to find out that if he attended GAVC for criminal justice, he would be able to ride with a local police officer as part of his classwork.

“It gave me a lot of interesting knowledge,” Hatteberg said.

Gagliardo said the immediate feedback from the exhibitors was positive. She said the event was a success and is looking forward to hosting it again next year with even more exhibitors available to present their profession to the students.

Vegas welcome sign’s designer never liked look of ‘fabulous’

By KIMBERLY PIERCEALL The Associated Press LAS VEGAS – The woman who designed the neon sign that has welcomed countless visitors to “fabulous Las Vegas” since 1959 has died.

Betty Willis, credited with designing the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, died in her Overton, Nevada, home on Sunday.

She was “a wonderful woman and a good mom,” her daughter Marjorie Holland said Tuesday by phone.

Holland said her 91-yearold mother was proud of her design for the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, but she never grew fond of how “fabulous” appeared, the single-word adjective not quite as flowing a script as she had envisioned.

The artist’s often-copied sign sits in a median in the middle of Las Vegas Boulevard south of the Strip.

She said her mother put quite a bit of thought into the sign’s design, arranging the

word “welcome” inside seven silver dollars, both a lucky number and winning currency of choice at the time for the destination.

Holland said her mother wanted the entire sign to be festive and happy, adding

what she described as a blinking Disney star atop.

The last time Willis visited her creation was May 20, 2013, for her 90th birthday, when she marveled at the parking lot that had been expanded a year prior so more people could park for a photo opportunity in the middle of the road.

Holland says her mother called the often-replicated sign “the little sign that could,” because she was amazed by its popularity.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority called Willis “a visionary who created one of the most iconic and most photographed landmarks in our great city.

“The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign will be a lasting legacy to a pioneer who gave not only Las Vegas, but several businesses, their identity.”

The welcome sign’s design,

which was never copyrighted, has become a fixture on travel tchotchkes from Vegas and everywhere else, exactly as Willis wanted it, Holland said.

“The fact that everyone loves that sign and its design after all these years is a testament to Betty’s talents,” Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said. “There is probably no bigger Las Vegas icon than that sign.”

In 2009, the sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Willis was born in 1923 in the small town of Overton, Nevada, and her family moved to Las Vegas a short time later.

She worked as a commercial artist in Los Angeles before returning to Las Vegas, where she worked in an industry dominated by men.

Willis also designed neon signs for the Moulin Rouge casino and Blue Angel motel in Las Vegas.

And as the weather warms up, we’ll transition from buying herbs in cute little clamshells costing a couple bucks each to scooping large bunches of soft-leaved herbs into our carts for pennies on the dollar.

Or perhaps you have an herb garden and you’ll find yourself inundated with a cilantro or parsley plant that takes over a small section of your backyard.

What to do with all these herbs? One approach to preserving herbs is to freeze them as cubes.

To do this, you simply blend up clean, fresh herbs with just enough oil or water to make a thick paste.

You then fill ice cube trays (silicone muffin cups also work) about halfway with the herb paste and freeze.

Once frozen, the herb cubes can be bagged and stored in the freezer until needed.

Note that water-based herb cubes freeze more firmly than oil-based, but herbs discolor

more in water.

Either way, these cubes are easily added to soups, stews, sautes and chili.

For the best effect, add them toward the end of cooking so the fresh flavor of the preserved herbs really comes through.

Another favorite strategy for making the most of my herbs is pesto.

But don’t assume you’re limited to the classic basil version.

Using my simple formula, you can use just about any herb or green (or combination) to make a tasty pesto perfect for pasta, seafood, dipping bread, spooning over a hot soup, or any other favorite way to use pesto. It also freezes well as cubes.

Once you jump on the pesto ice cube train, you will be amazed at the many uses: Add to scrambled eggs; use as a sandwich spread; whisk with Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar and water to make vinaigrette; spoon over meat hot off the grill; toss with roasted veggies; mix with an equal amount of Dijon and spoon over chicken breasts before roasting; mix with Greek yo-

Add the oil, broth, Parmesan and salt, then blend to desired consistency.

Use immediately, or transfer to a small bowl, cover tightly and chill.

Alternatively, spoon into ice cube trays (fill cubes only halfway) and freeze.

Pop out frozen pesto cubes and keep in a zip-close plastic bag in the freezer.

Rising teenage use of e-cigs is a perilous trend There’s one bit of good news in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest survey on teenage smoking – only 9.2 percent of teens in 2014 said they smoke cigarettes. That’s a sharp drop from 12.7 percent of the year before, the biggest one-year decline in more than a decade.

But that positive news was offset by the tripling of teens who said they use electronic cigarettes – a smokeless, tobacco-less alternative that contains nicotine, which is addictive.

According to the CDC, 2 million high school students, or 13.4 percent, said they used e-cigarettes last year, compared with only 4.5 percent the year before. In 2014, 450,000 middle school

students, or 3.9 percent, used e-cigarettes – a jump from 1.1 percent in 2013.

The CDC considers it a worrisome trend because of the possibility that young people could migrate to tobacco eventually if hooked on nicotine. The illusion that e-cigarettes are “safe” could be creating a new generation of adult smokers.

Although the Food and Drug Administration regulates cigarettes, roll-yourown tobacco and smokeless tobacco, it has no authority over e-cigarettes. It may issue a rule in June, though, giving itself the power. For the sake of healthy Americans, young and old, it won’t come a day too soon.

Madigan values power over adherence to particular philosophy SPRINGFIELD – One of the questions I get asked most often as an Illinois political reporter is: “What is Mike Madigan really like?”

The best answer I can give is if one were to look up the word “shrewd” in the dictionary, you’d likely see Mike Madigan staring back at you.

Last year, he called for cutting taxes on businesses.

Now he’s calling for jacking up taxes on millionaires.

Just why he would treat one group of job creators different than another? Who knows? But no one should be surprised.

I’ve been covering Madigan since 1987. The one thing I’ve learned about him is that he values the accumulation of power over adherence to any particular principle or phi-

losophy. The only thing that counts at the end of the day for him is this question: Will it help more Democrats get elected to the Illinois General Assembly?

Policy is a secondary consideration for a man who has been in the Legislature longer than many of his fellow lawmakers have been alive.

In fact, no state legislative leader in the history of the United States has been in power longer than Michael J. Madigan.

Madigan is not about the money. Really. He lives in a modest home on Chicago’s South Side, with a market value of less than a fourth of what he says he earns in a good year. For lunch, every day he eats just an apple.

In the 25 years I’ve covered him I’ve never known him to outright lie. Every public utterance is said with calculation. Words are parsed.

Meanings obscured. Pronouncements ambiguous.

But never have I heard him say a bald-faced lie. Does he break the law? I’ve never seen evidence of it. And I don’t believe he would. For decades, I’ve seen reporters trying to

uncover criminal behavior on Madigan’s part. They’ve failed.

What’s far more interesting to me is what Madigan can do legally. Madigan not only heads a legislative chamber and a law firm. He is the party boss for the Illinois Democratic Party. He’s raised tens of millions of dollars and poured them into the campaign coffers of state representative candidates across Illinois.

But again, personal political convictions play a small part in what he asks of his members. Just consider Madigan’s relationship with Blagojevich, during the six years Blagojevich was governor.

First Madigan hinted darkly about Blagojevich “improprieties.”

Then Madigan enthusiasti-

cally supported Blagojevich’s spending bills and measures to increase the power of the governorship.

And then he formed an alliance of Republican and Democrat lawmakers to thwart the governor’s legislative initiatives.

And next he co-chaired Blagojevich’s re-election campaign. And finally he led the charge to impeach the governor.

Consistent? No. Predictable? No. Powerful? Yes.

Minooka rolls through Plainfield East

Minooka’s boys volleyball team fit that description.

After losing many experienced seniors, including Junior Olympic team member Mitch Perinar, from last year’s team, then fielding a team of mostly juniors on the floor this year, Minooka coach Janel Grzetich figured this would be a rebuilding year for the Indians.

Minooka finished with a 25-18, 25-11 win Tuesday over Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield East.

“We’re young,” Grzetich said. “We figured this would be a rebuilding year, but we have been very competitive as well. It’s nice to be able to rebuild with talented players, that’s for sure.

“We’ve got kind of a nice tradition going here, and I don’t think any class of kids coming through wants fall short of that.”

Plainfield East kept things close early in the first game, and the teams were tied at 8.

Brandon Baranski stepped to the service line for the Indians and took over, delivering a back row kill to start a string of seven straight points that also included three aces. In between, Minooka (7-4, 5-0) got a kill each from Danny Beaudin and Colin Cimaroli.

The lead stretched to 22-13 before Plainfield East rallied a bit, getting kills from Feras Hielhel and Jacob Kuzrock and an ace by Hielhel to make it 23-17. A kill from Baranski gave Minooka a 24-17 lead and a serving error by East later ended it.

The second game was never in doubt, as Minooka jumped to a 10-3 lead behind strong play at the net on both offense and defense. The advantage swelled to 18-8 when Beaudin got a stuff block. The last two Minooka kills came from senior Aaron Alexander.

Throughout this year, he’s downplayed the idea of being an All-Star, of being the Bulls’ new alpha male, of emerging as an elite two guard in the NBA. “I’m not a star,’’ Butler said earlier in the season. “I’m a good role player on a really, really good team, a really, really deep team. I like role player.

Star’s never been next to Jimmy Butler’s name. It never will be. I’ll always be an under-the-radar dawg.’’

If it was up to Butler, the prevailing idea of him would be taking the kid out of Tomball, Texas – population 10,753 – but not taking Tomball, Texas, out of the kid. Don’t buy it for a second, however.

games of the best-of-seven series, Butler is averaging 28 points with a .545 shooting percentage, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and of course the 14-point fourth-quarter takeover in Monday night’s Game 2 come-from-behind win.

“Butler was a one-man show being able to shoot the 3 and also get to the basket,’’ Bucks coach Jason Kidd said.

“Butler got going here and we just couldn’t slow him down.’’

Milwaukee will obviously look to change that in Game 3, but Butler’s versatility to

score from so many places on the floor might just be the one matchup the Bucks have no real answer for. Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn’t looked strong enough to slow down Butler and Khris Middleton hasn’t looked quick enough.

Butler has been a game-plan killer.

“I know Jimmy is a hard worker, someone that has put in a lot of hard work in his game, and it’s paying off at the most important time of the year, so he’s playing great basketball and it’s great to have

him as a teammate,’’ Joakim Noah said.

That’s why Noah and Rose continue telling Butler to go ahead and take over late in games, and Butler isn’t hesitant about doing that.

“I do feel comfortable,’’ Butler said, when asked about being the closer late in games.

At the bridge table, sometimes your partner will cause you to misdefend. Much more often, though, you must be responsible for your own choices. And some defensive plays can be very hard to find. The one in this deal would elude most players.

Reduce indoor mold by eliminating sources of dampness Dear Doctor K: We just found out that my son is extremely allergic to mold. What can I do to minimize the mold in my home?

Dear Reader: Even if your son is getting allergy shots or taking medications, the best way to control his allergy is to reduce his exposure to mold.

Mold, along with mildew and yeasts, are the spores of fungi. Spores are very light and travel in the air. Because spores are capable of surviving in dry, unpleasant conditions, they can live a long time. But they especially thrive in damp, warm environments.

Indoor molds are very common. More than 1,000 different molds live in homes

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff in the United States. The best way to avoid indoor mold is to prevent it from forming in the first place. Molds like moist places, so try to find and fix sources of dampness.

To further minimize indoor mold: • Keep humidity levels in your home as low as you can.

Use an air conditioner or dehumidifier during humid months.

• Be sure your home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in bathrooms and in the kitchen. Install a

bathroom exhaust fan that vents directly to the outside.

• Clean mold-covered surfaces with a 1-to-10 ratio of bleach to water.

• If mold has entered drywall or insulation in your home, you’ll have to rip it out and replace it.

• Remove mold-infested carpets and upholstery and throw away any moldy items (including clothing, books and papers).

• Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.

• Add mold inhibitors to paint when redecorating.

• If you have house plants, don’t overwater; it encourages mold in the soil.

Molds also live outdoors.

Levels of some spores peak in late summer or early fall.

Anyone allergic to mold should avoid areas that are likely to have it, such as wooded areas, compost piles, cut grass and piles of damp, raked leaves. Remove damaged wood from your yard, since molds live on wet, rotten wood.

Also, when possible, encourage your son to avoid outdoor activities on windy and rainy days. Mold spore counts increase in warm, humid weather and immediately after summer rainstorms.

As I’m sure you know, mold allergies are very com-

mon. In some people, molds can trigger asthma. I have a mold allergy that inflames my nose. For me and most of my patients with mold allergies, carefully eliminating or reducing exposure to molds using the suggestions I’ve described gives sufficient relief.

However, when constant stuffy and runny nose, sinus congestion and asthma persist despite everything, allergy treatments can help.

Allergy shots (called subcutaneous immunotherapy or SCIT) can give considerable additional relief.
