DOMINIC J. FALETTI

Born: Aug. 28, 1928; in Braidwood, IL Died: March 31, 2015; in Dwight, IL Dominic J. Faletti, age 86, of Buckingham, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Heritage Health Nursing Home in Dwight.

Born August 28, 1928, in Braidwood, to the late Joseph and Rose M. (nee Bertino) Faletti.

He is a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean Conflict, and was very proud of his service to our country.

He was a lifelong farmer of the Custer Park, Braidwood, and Buckingham Areas. He was also employed for Peabody Coal Company in Braidwood.

Member of the Wilmington VFW Post #5422 serving on the honor guard. He was also a member of the Braidwood American Legion Koca Post #39, Immaculate Conception Church in Braidwood, St. Lawrence O’Tool Catholic Church in Essex, Illinois, and a past president of Ponderosa sportsman club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are two children, Dominic “Rocky” (Pat) Faletti, Jr. of Dwight and Marguerite “Peggy” (Ron) Siron of Morris, IL; four grandchildren, Matthew Hill, Brian (Carissa) Faletti, Alan (Danielle) Faletti, and Kathrine Faletti; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Joseph (Ruth) Faletti of Braidwood, Peter (Carol) Faletti of South Wilmington, IL, Barney (Alice) Faletti of Wilmington, and Mike (Linda) Faletti of Braidwood; two sisters, Anna Faletti of Braidwood and Rose (Elmer) Fick of Aurora, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was one sister, Jessie Favero.

Funeral services will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd.

& Crematory, Braidwood Chapel, Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Show Reddy Allam officiating. Visitation Monday, April 6, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Academy hoped to promote truth, interest, educate future firefighters

Each took turns holding hoses and hydraulic rescue tools that in some cases weighed as much as they did.

BRACEVILLE – Cody Ledlow of Braceville has always had an interest in fighting fires after watching television shows like “Chicago Fire.”

His interest brought him to junior firefighter training Wednesday at the Braceville Fire Protection District, where he learned fighting real fires isn’t like what he sees on television.

“We wanted to show them what we do on a daily basis,” firefighter Michael Nicola said. “When we go into the schools we talk about fire prevention. This gives them a better chance to see what the job is. We don’t want them to think it’s like it is on TV.” The district decided to host its first junior training to get area children in the door to learn about the job.

This way, when they are of age, they have an understanding of what a volunteer firefighter does. About 10 children attended.

“The numbers of volunteers are going down,” Braceville Fire Chief Nate Basham said.

“We are mostly volunteers and it’s hard to get people to do the job for free.”

He said becoming a volunteer with Braceville’s fire district involves a lot of training and time, which many people don’t have time for.

“If we give them an idea of what we do, maybe they will grow up to do the job,” Basham said. “People watch TV and get a misconception of the job.”

The children who attended were shown the protective gear and were able to time a firefighter as he got completely dressed – including donning oxygen gear – in under a minute. Amazed, the children tried to see if they could do it in the same time.

“With this being the first academy, we are learning from it,” Basham said. “We are looking at doing it again this

summer and then hope to host it every year.”

The district also is looking for adults who would like to join the fire and EMS services offered by the district to fill some vacant volunteer positions. Basham said no experience is necessary and those interested can apply in person at the station, 102 W. Main St. in Braceville.

Kinzinger meets committee Congressman talks about benefits of legislative group

MORRIS – U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger met with members of the Grundy County Board Legislative Committee for a workshop Tuesday where he discussed the benefits of having such a committee and what laws are being discussed in Washington, D.C., that matter to the residents of Grundy County. Kinzinger, a Republican who lives in Channahon, told the committee that while he sat on the McLean County Board from 1998 to 2003, he also was part of a Legislative Committee. The local committee focuses on how external regulation affects Grundy County.

“I guess this [committee] is new for you all,” Kinzinger said. “It’s a great opportunity.

It is what you want to make it.”

The Grundy County Legislative Committee is a new group

that was introduced in December as the County Board reorganized under new Chairman David Welter.

Kinzinger said he recommends having the committee so that members of the County Board can watch events in Springfield and Washington, D.C., that will directly affect the county, as well as give the county a voice with their legislators as they bring forward issues that matter to the residents.

“There are a lot of important things coming up in D.C. that are going to be important to the folks in Grundy County,” Kinzinger said.

He said the transportation bill is a major factor that will affect infrastructure and is needed to help fund the rebuilding of roads and bridges throughout the district.

“We want to make sure we have good roads and bridges,”

Work is usually done on Saturdays, but responsibilities should increase with the launch of Grundy-Three Rivers’ chapter of A Brush With Kindness program, which Wilkinson said was recently registered with Habitat for Humanity International. A Brush With Kindness is an exterior home preservation program offering painting, landscaping and minor repair services to eligible homeowners.

This program will include homeowners who meet a low-to-moderate income requirement. Details on how to apply and potential projects will be available soon, Wilkinson said.

“A Brush With Kindness will allow us to reach more families,” Wilkinson said. “We’ve gotten constant reminders of a gap in service for low income homeowners who need exterior repairs done to their homes but can’t afford it.”

MORRIS – The Grundy-Three Rivers chapter of Habitat for Humanity is hoping to break ground on its 12th home in late May, and is in need of volunteer construction crew leaders. Board President Julie Wilkinson said the position will be vital to the growth of Grundy-Three Rivers, and the organization is hoping to hire in May or June.

“This role could make or break the experience for volunteers,” Wilkinson said.

“Most of our volunteers start in construction swinging a hammer, but we need them to have a good experience and be exposed to our mission and know the good that comes from it.”

Wilkinson said efficiency on the job site can truly be realized with more leadership and will allow volunteers to see their work matters.

The local Habitat for Humanity has recently started the construction of a small subdivision in Morris. The third of five houses of the Hancock Page subdivision was dedicated in December. The subdivision is on the former paper mill property. Voluntary construction crew leaders will work closely with construction manager John Latimer, a retired contractor who is relied on heavily.

“The last couple years we’ve given thought to succession planning,” Wilkinson said. “It’s also become necessary to have another person capable of managing volunteers on job sites. We need people to share the volume of work and potentially succeed John in his role.”

Latimer and Wilkinson said it’s a part-time commitment.

Latimer thinks potential candidates might have thought the position requires a lot of time. Wilkinson said the organization would like to hire people with experience leading volunteers or crews, but it isn’t a requirement.

“Volunteer experience would be an an advantage, but more than anything we’re looking for someone who is knowledgeable in home construction,” Latimer said. “We need someone who can poten-

Seneca Historical Guild completes history book MORRIS DAILY HERALD SENECA – The Seneca Historical Guild has announced its book, “The Story of Seneca, Illinois,” is being printed.

“After almost two years of collection, composing, clarifying, and editing words and pictures, the document is be-

ing printed,” board member Jeff Maierhofer said in a news release.“It has taken longer than we expected and required more effort than we imagined, but the book has surpassed any of our expectations and we are proud of what we have accomplished.”

The book is scheduled to

be delivered in mid-May, and a book release event is being planned.

Due to the increased size of the book, the cost will increase from $50 to $60 on June 7.

Initial plans were for a 300 page book, but with the tremendous response from community members, the book

now has over 400 pages.

Order forms are available online and books can be purchased from the Guild’s website, senecahistory.com.

Orders can be handled any Guild member, and forms are available at the Seneca Village Hall.

Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said they were first called to a brush fire at 6405 W. Indian Trail Road in Verona for a brush fire that was approaching a structure on the property.

When the fire department

arrived on scene a pole barn on the property was on fire along with a second brush fire on the same property.

“The pole barn had minor damage and the brush fire was in the timber behind the house,” Steffes said.

Morris received mutual aid to the fire from Coal City and Mazon fire protection districts.

The second fire call came in shortly after for a reported brush fire near the intersection of Airport Road and Nettle

Creek Road, north of Morris.

Seneca, Lisbon, Minooka and Channahon responded with mutual aid to Morris to fight the brush fire that was spreading through corn stubble in an open field.

No structures were involved or in danger of the second fire.

Steffes said the cause of first fire on Indian Trail was caused by a rubbish fire that got out of control, the fire on Nettle Creek Road is undetermined at this time.

POW flag donated to Coal City library St. Juvin Post helps honor missing soldiers MORRIS DAILY HERALD COAL CITY – St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars presented a prisoner of war/ missing in action flag to the Coal City Public Library District earlier this month.

Founded on March 21, 1925 by 26 World War I and one Spanish-American War veteran, St. Juvin Post is celebrating its 19th year of service to veterans and the community, according to a news release from the Post.

The Post distributes several POW/MIA flags each year to commemorate those who have not returned from service to their country.

The presentation to the library on March 12 was made

by Post Adjutant Keith Roseland.

“The POW/MIA flag was created by the National League of Families to draw attention

to the POW/MIA issue during the Vietnam War,” Post Commander Charlie Brown said in the release.

Although the flag is best known for its association with the Vietnam War, it has come to symbolize all U.S. POW/ MIAs from all wars.

The search for U.S. MIAs continues today in Vietnam, Korea, Europe and all across the globe, according to the release.

Surprisingly, these efforts are still turning up the remains of MIAs who number more than 1,700 from the Vietnam War and 7,200 from the Korean War, while World War II still has about 72,000 MIAs, about half of whom are considered “recoverable” based on their last known or presumed location.

OPINION Suicide is never a painless act “One day the story of my young daughter will be made beautiful in her living because she witnessed my dying.”

These jarring words come from the open letter a woman named Kara Tippetts wrote to Brittany Maynard, the young woman suffering with brain cancer who ended her life late last year in Oregon, where medically assisted suicide is legal. Tippets was dying of cancer, too.

But she wasn’t moving from Colorado to Oregon in order to legally kill herself, as Maynard did. She was fighting to live every last breath she could muster with her family and friends around her.

Tippets died on March 22, just days before Maynard would posthumously testify, in the California statehouse via a video that assisted suicide activists had made before her death, in favor of legislation that would bring assisted suicide to the Golden State.

But is more suicide something we really need?

Suicide is a “public-health crisis” in the United States, Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, wrote recently. “According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is currently the third leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults and the 10th leading cause of death overall for individuals over the age of 10,” his article for the Catholic journal First Things stated.

Kheriaty points out that in Oregon, where physician assisted suicide has been legal since 1997, suicide rates are now 35 percent higher than the national average.

He refers to a “relentlessly logical slide from a cancer patient with six months to live to people who are merely unhappy, demoralized, dejected, depressed, or desperate.” This trend has been seen in countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium.

Assisted suicide is under consideration in about 20 places around the country now (including Washington, D.C.).

Redskins fall victim to late home run

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With two outs and a runner on second base in the top of the fourth inning, Joliet Catholic Academy’s Alyssa Callans drove a ball deep to left field.

Morris left fielder Jasmine Cook chased it down and caught it just shy of the fence.

Coming back to the bench, JCA coach Dave Douglas said to Callans, “That ball was almost gone. You hit it more on a line, and it’s out of here.”

Apparently Callans listened, as in her next at-bat, with two outs and nobody on in the top of the seventh, she drove a pitch deep to left.

This one was not as high as the previous one, but it went farther. Far enough to get over the fence for a solo home run that broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Angels a 4-3 lead.

Callans then went out and retired Morris in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the lead and finish off the nonconference win.

“The time before, she almost got it out of here,” Douglas said. “This one went a little bit farther and it was enough.

“This was a good game by both teams. Their outfield was amazing. They made some great plays. This game couldn’t have been any closer.”

JCA (2-2) got on the board first. Reilly Jo Swanson was hit by a pitch, then went to second on a grounder to first by Brenna Garland.

A wild pitch sent her to third, and Callans grounded back to the mound, scoring Swanson.

Two walks and a single loaded the bases, but Morris pitcher Abby Burns got Paige Callans on a fly ball to left to leave the runners stranded.

Morris (6-2) countered in the bottom of the first. With one out, Amanda Jenkins singled, and Emily Moore did the same.

Ashley Phelps reached on an error to load the bases before Janelle Brehm doubled to center to score Jenkins and Moore.

next two batters and Morris led 2-1 after an inning.

“We could have broken the game open right there in the first inning,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “But we didn’t execute well in the box. We took some called third strikes with runners in scoring position.”

After a scoreless second inning, JCA went back ahead in the third. Alyssa Callans led off with a single and Alivia Phelps walked, Kayla Bennett sacrificed the runners to second and third, and a single by Caitlyn Spreitzer scored both runners for a 3-2 Angels lead.

Burns settled in after that, retiring 13 of the next 15 batters before Callans’ homer in the seventh.

The Redskins turned a 6-43 double play in the fifth after Phelps led off with her third walk of the game.

Burns finished with four walks and five strikeouts and allowed six hits.

Providence powers past Minooka in tourney

By JEFF DEGRAW Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – There will be a new champion in the WJOL/ Don Ladas Memorial Tournament this year.

The Providence baseball continued its hot hitting on a warm, windy Wednesday afternoon and defeated Minooka, 18-7, in six innings.

Minooka won last year’s tournament with a thrilling 10 inning victory over Joliet Catholic.

The Indians, playing on their home field as the visitors, jumped Providence starter Jake Carlsen with two runs on three hits in the top of the first.

Jake Null lead off the game with a single, then with one out, Cristian Sanchez followed with another single and Jon Vesper, knocked in Null with the third hit of the inning. Tyler Paulsen, the

Minooka starting pitcher, got the next RBI on a ground out, with Sanchez scoring.

Providence answered in the bottom of the first with four runs on only two hits and plated three more runs in the second on only one hit.

The one hit was a 3-run homer by Jackson Dvorak. All of the Celtic runs in both innings were scored with two outs.

In those first two innings, Minooka gave up seven walks and hit a batter. For the game, Providence received eight base on balls and were hit by pitches on four occasions.

“Were are struggling to find the plate and when we do, we are getting turned around pretty good,” said Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic.

“I think we threw something like 93 pitches in the first three innings and Providence is a very good hitting team and they took advantage

of every opportunity.”

Carlsen settled down after the first inning and retired seven in a row before Sanchez tagged the hurler for a home run in the third to make the score 7-3.

“I feel good at the plate, but it’s tough to take the loss. I can’t say it was a good game for me, because we lost. We need to pull together and get some wins,” said Sanchez, who was 3-for-3 and was also hit by a pitch.

The bats got hot for the Celtics in the fourth as they sent 12 men to the plate and produced seven runs on six hits. Matt Diehl, Justin Hunniford, Tom Kelley all singled, then Brendan O’Brien doubled before anyone was out.

Rych and Mike Madaj followed with RBI singles after Stulas flew out. A wild pitch and three hit batters in a row rounded out the Celtic scoring onslaught to give them a 15-3

lead.

Minooka scored four runs in the top of the fifth to keep the game alive at 15-7.

Doubles by pinch hitters Brad VanAsdlen and Patrick Rumsey provided the spark for the Indians.

In the bottom of the fifth, junior Joe Butler made his first appearance of the season for the Indians. He set the Celtics down in order.

Butler, who has been battling a thumb injury, threw a bullpen session earlier in the week and felt ready to go.

“Joe has been really beating himself up that he can’t play and help the team. He is such a competitor. He wants to be out there,” said Petrovic.

Saturday, Minooka will play Lincoln-Way West at 9 a.m. in the consolation bracket and Providence will take on Joliet West at 11:30 a.m. in the championship bracket. Both games will be at Minooka.

Vegas cashes in on over-the-top Cubs fever I don’t usually deal in hyperbole, but THIS IS THE GREATEST, MOST HILARIOUS STORY EVER! ESPN.com is reporting that more money has been bet on the Cubs to win the World Series this season than on any other team, at least at two of Nevada’s biggest sports books.

The Cubs?

Winning the World Series?

This season?

Are you kidding me?

It’s safe to assume the people throwing money at the Cubs aren’t professional bettors. It’s even safer to assume they are professional Cubs fans, full of hope and their children’s college tuition money.

How did we get here? How does one go from five straight fifth-place finishes to such heavenly visions? This isn’t putting your money where your mouth is. This is putting your money where your mental illness is.

Whoever in Las Vegas set the odds at 6-1 for the Cubs to win it all is a genius. It plays right into Cubs fans’ wildest dream, a dream that has almost no chance of hap-

VIEWS Rick Morrissey pening this season. But tell your more ardent follower of this franchise that there is a chance, and he or she slaps down money on the possibility of a Cubs championship parade. Tell him or her the chance is a decent one and watch the disposable income go down the disposal.

A real tug of war is going on between the more outwardly sober Cubs fan and the slobbery version who wants to plant wet kisses on president of baseball operations Theo Epstein. One side doesn’t think this is The Year, though it secretly holds out hope that Kris Bryant will hit a game-winning grand slam in Game 7 of the World Series. The other side, men and women alike, wants

to carry Epstein’s baby to term.

By the way, remember when everyone wanted to be Phil Jackson? He’s getting killed now in New York for overseeing a disaster of a Knicks team. Epstein, meanwhile, has convinced Cubs fans through a combined 86 games under .500 the past three seasons that he sees greatness ahead. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Cubs fans are ready to win. They were ready to win 100 years ago. But that doesn’t explain the cannabis cloud of hope that has settled over Wrigley Field and beyond this year. There are reasons to hope, though there are just as many unknowns.

There’s Jon Lester and Joe Maddon. But there’s also all that young, unproven talent. The ado seems a little outsized, even for Cubs fans caught up in the hysteria.

Could a championship happen this season? In the way a singing cow could happen. The construction mess that is Wrigley Field might end up serving as a metaphor for the young Cubs: Not ready yet. Next year? Who

I’ve heard Cubs fans dismiss those who bet money on a North Side World Series as “stupid.” Well, there’s apparently a lot of stupid out there. ESPN.com reports the number of bets on the Cubs at one sports book is more than double any other team.

That’s not belief. That’s beyond belief.

People have said the end of the world will surely be upon us if the Cubs win a World Series. I remain of the belief that the end of the world will occur with the Cubs one out away from winning their first title since 1908. But that’s just me, a weary soul who has seen too much from this franchise, none of which had anything to do with a World Series championship.

Some of you are insistent the Cubs are going to win it all this year.

To which the more clear-eyed among us repeat: Wanna bet?

Sale shows encouraging signs as rehab continues

Their franchise pitcher is a little behind and won’t be traveling north with the team for Opening Day, but Chris Sale is close.

If six innings and 90 pitches against Cincinnati Reds Class A prospects on a backfield at Camelback Ranch told us anything, it’s that Sale’s right foot is healing nicely. Working at a Mark Buehrle-type pace – “It’s hot, man” was his explanation for working fast – Sale pumped his fastball up to the plate at 94 to 96 mph, got 13 strikeouts and gave up no walks and two hits in his first game of the

spring. One hit was a homer to former second-round draft choice Taylor Sparks, an opposite-field poke over a not-toodeep fence in right field on a changeup Sale left up in the zone. He also hit a batter with an up-and-in arm-side fastball.

Besides that, Sale didn’t give the kids much to hit.

“I felt really good,” Sale said. “It was nice to get back on the mound and do what I am supposed to do, honestly.

It stinks being on rehab the whole time so it was nice to be a pitcher again and be in a game situation.”

thing looks normal.

“Yeah, trying to move around a little bit,” he said. “It felt fine, though. It’s reactions, not putting too much emphasis on it being hurt you go out there and you’re not thinking about anything but getting outs. It was nice to be able to do that and prove to myself that I’m ready to go right now.”

Sale won’t go north with the rest of the team. He’ll stay back to pitch another minor league game Monday. With one day to go here, the Sox are eager to get on with the regular season.

“Spring training is spring training,” Sale said. “We’re not putting a lot of emphasis on these games and the results of these games. The main thing is to get your reps and get out of here healthy. One for

two on that. We’re here to win games but at the end of the day we have guys who can show up and play when the lights are on. That’s what matters.”

Sale needs to show up, and everything points to that happening on the opening homestand.

“Sure we need that guy,” said Jeff Samardzija, who is taking Sale’s Opening Day start. “To have him coming and get him into the rotation, that’s a big thing. We’ve kind of seen different guys in that slot so once we get situated and rolling and we just see one guy after another going out there and dominating, then we can get in that rhythm as a staff. We need that guy. We need him to be ready and be healthy.”

South starts with seven top tricks: two hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. So, a 3-3 diamond division is enough – but that split is against the odds; and if it exists, it will still be there in a minute if the club suit proves unhelpful. First, declarer should try to collect four club tricks. At trick two, he should cash dummy’s club ace. When East drops the jack, South continues with the club eight (or nine) from the dummy. If the suit splits 3-2, he has the desired four club tricks. Here, though, West wins with his ten.

Taking precautions, pregnant women should not fear CMV Dear Dr. K: At a recent pregnancy checkup, my doctor said something about cytomegalovirus. What is that, and what does it have to do with pregnancy?

Dear Reader: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of eight members of the family of human herpesviruses. The first two are the viruses that cause “herpes” sores of the mouth, genitals and other areas.

All of the herpesviruses cause a lifelong infection.

Once you are infected with CMV, it always remains in your body, generally causing no trouble. Up to 85 percent of adults in the United States have been infected. The virus can pass from person to person through body fluids such as blood, urine or saliva. Women

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff can pass CMV to their unborn babies in the womb, in vaginal secretions during delivery and in breast milk after birth.

In most healthy adults and children, a new infection with CMV results only in mild and temporary symptoms. In fact, a new infection often is “silent,” causing no symptoms at all.

Adults get seriously ill from CMV primarily when their immune systems become weakened by disease (such as HIV infection) or treatments that suppress the immune system.

But CMV can be serious, and even fatal, for newborn babies. That’s why, if you are pregnant, your doctor may want to test you for CMV. When a pregnant woman becomes newly infected with CMV during pregnancy, there is a 40 percent chance her baby will become infected. In contrast, less than 2 percent of babies born to mothers who were infected with CMV before they became pregnant are infected.

And their problems tend to be less severe.

CMV infection in newborns whose mothers were infected during pregnancy can cause serious disability. The effects of CMV in newborns can vary greatly. Some babies may die from the infection, but others may have no long-lasting

effects.

Newborns with CMV are likely to be born premature and at a low birth weight.

They may be born with a small brain or other nervous system disorders that can cause seizures, deafness, mental disability or death.

CMV can cause the liver and spleen to enlarge, liver abnormalities that cause yellowing of the skin and eyes and blood disorders.

Parents, including expectant mothers, can become infected from their children, though. CMV does not spread easily. Still, someone like you who is pregnant should be careful if you have young kids in the house. The following tips may reduce your risk of getting CMV:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers.

• Don’t kiss young children under the age of 5 or 6 on the mouth or cheek. Instead, kiss them on the head or give them a big hug.

• Don’t share food, drinks or utensils with young children.

• Don’t put a child’s pacifier in your mouth. (Seem obvious?

I’ve had at least one patient do it thoughtlessly.)

These few precautions can protect you and your baby from becoming seriously ill from a virus that usually causes no harm.
