Don was born July 6, 1925, in Gardner to Vernon and Ethel (Claypool) Johnson. In 1949, he married Bethyl Wiley of Marseilles. Don was a member of First United Methodist Church in Seneca. He worked at the Seneca Shipyards and served in the Army during WW II. He farmed all of his life and was employed by Morris Federal Paperboard for 30 years. He bowled on the Federal Paperboard bowling team, in the Senior League, and in other leagues. He was also a grain inspector for many years. He was also a volunteer for Morris Hospital Transportation.

Don is survived by his wife, Bethyl; two sons, Dale (Peggy) of Hamilton, Ohio and Brian (JoEllyn) of Seneca; five grandchildren, Sam and Ann Johnson, and Tom, Tim, and Travis Wills; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Julia Thompson and Pearl Laing, both of Grand Chain, IL and Charlotte Berkland of Omaha, Neb. Don was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Greves and Mabel Fight; and one brother, Melvin.

Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church in Seneca or Morris Hospital Transportation.

Pallbearers will be Dale, Brian, and Sam Johnson, and Julian Houston, Roger Weber, and Delbert Fisk.

OBITUARIES JOHN E. BROWNING

Born: April 15, 1951; in Queens, NY Died: April 15, 2015; in Morris, IL John E. Browning, age 64, of Coal City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Born April 15, 1951, in Queens, New York, John is a son of Mona (McAfee) Browning of New Albany, Indiana, and the late H. Lee Browning. He was a graduate of Westport High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and went on to honorably serve in the United States Navy (1970 - 1978). On May 15, 1970, John married Elizabeth “Sherfy” McConnell in Richmond, Kentucky. John was an active member of Phelan Acres Bible Church, where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School and was a song leader. He sat on the board for Cup of Cold Water Ministry and was a former board member with Christian Aids Outreach Ministries. John retired from Exelon Nuclear, Braidwood Station, where he was a nuclear instructor, and returned as a consultant and instructor at the Braidwood Training Center.

John enjoyed biking and traveling, and was a designer for video game scenarios. Throughout the Coal City School District, John was fondly re-

ferred to as “Mr. Sherfy”, and worked as a back stage crew member for the high school and middle school musicals. Most recently, John was the operator of the flying system for the production of Beauty and the Beast at Coal City High School.

Survivors include his wife and best friend, Sherfy; son, Christopher (Magali) Browning of Alabama; grandchildren, Adrian Sherfy, Nicholas John, Benjamin Lee and Antonio William; his mother, Mona; brothers, Thomas (Annette) Browning of Crestwood, KY and Matthew Lee Browning of Louisville; sister, Laura (Harvey) Webb of NC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Katherine Crenshaw of Owenton, KY, Linda (Vernon) O’Dell of Cherokee, NC and William T. (Nancy) McConnell of Memphis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his father, H. Lee Browning (1996); brother-in-law, Robert McConnell; and his father and mother-in-law, William T. and June (Redding) McConnell.

Visitation and video tribute will be Sunday, April 19, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. until time of funeral service 6:00 p.m., at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd. in Wilmington.

Pastor Rodney Chappell will officiate.

Additional visitation will be held at Prewitt Funeral Home in New Castle, Kentucky, on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will

Morris Community High School students make guitars for charity

MORRIS – Guitars might be a part of your favorite song or part of prom next month.

Most don’t think of the path a guitar takes before it ends up playing a song – such as how building it might give a high school student the skills and work ethic for a career working with his or her hands, or that the sale of the guitar the teenager made might feed those in need.

But that all can happen because of a Production I class at Morris Community High School.

Before industrial arts teacher Mark Smith joined the MCHS faculty a few years ago, he came in contact with Gerry Kowalski of Taylor Guitars, based in El Cajon, California.

“I saw a video Taylor Guitars made about the sustainability of ebony wood,” Smith said. “I also found out they have a program where they donate guitar materials for high school woodworking classes.”

Smith traveled to California for a weeklong one-on-one lesson from Kowalski about how to make a Taylor Guitar.

Materials for a Taylor Guitar total about $500 each, and a finished product retails for at least $1,500, Smith said.

During his time away from teaching to gain more industry experience, Smith always knew he would return

to the classroom, and when he interviewed at MCHS, he already had a project in the works.

For three years, students have built guitars in Smith’s classes. This year, he contacted We Care of Grundy County and said his class would like to donate the finished guitars through an auction, with all revenue from the sales going

to We Care.

“Nobody wants to be in a community where no one helps each other,” Smith said.

“That’s one reason I reached out to We Care, so our students know it’s important to help the community.”

Five guitars – one each made by students Carlos Lopez, Ethan Meier, Hunter Herman, Kory Mentnik and

Ryan Olson – are up for bid on We Care’s Facebook page. We Care is having an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. April 29 at its new location, 530 Bedford Road.

Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care, said online bidding will take place until April 28, then guitars will be on site at the open house for final bids.

The production class at Morris High is the only one outside of California participating in Taylor Guitars’ program, Smith said, and most of the students in his classes learn best by doing, also known as kinesthetic-tactile learning.

“Sitting tends to be harder for them,” Smith said. “When they get in hands-on classes they realize they’re smarter than they thought. Most of them will end up with a job where they work with their hands.”

It’s a demanding project, but they’ve all learned something that benefits them either now or in the future.

“What I learned in Mr. Smith’s classes allowed me to set the goal of making a longboard in my spare time,” Meier said. “I can use

Committee receives healthcare provider responses

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Personnel and Insurance Committee received five responses to the Request For Proposal (RFP) for healthcare for county employees which they discussed at their Thursday night meeting.

Of the five responses only three met the requirements stipulated in the request, according to Deborah Jankiewicz, human resources director for the county.

“We wanted to compare them apple to apple,” Jankiewicz said. “Two did not meet the requirements per the scope of work.”

Proposals were submitted

by Better Business Planning for $33,350, Foster and Foster for $35,000, The Horton Group for $42,000, Assurance for $50,000, and current provider Williams-Manny Insurance Group for $36,000. The proposals by Better Business Planning and Foster and Foster didn’t meet the requirements, and committee chairwoman Vicki Geiger said she felt those two proposals should be set aside since they didn’t provide the right information.

Chris Dearth, assistant state’s attorney, said it might be beneficial to interview the three remaining companies who submitted proper proposals but it wasn’t necessary.

In June, Morris-based Northern Insurance Group, which had been the county’s insurance broker for five years, was replaced by Williams-Manny Insurance Group as part of the contract with Williams-Manny.

When the county decided to go with Williams-Manny Insurance Group they agreed they would review the service after one year before deciding whether to stay with them or find another group. Committee members followed up with discussion on whether they should have the agencies present before the entire board, although most members felt that was unnecessary.

“Since they are the low bid

and current provider and we are happy, I don’t think the rest of the board is interested in hearing from them,” board and committee member Eric Rasmussen said.

Board Chairman David Welter said the committee could vote on the recommendation or they could table it until everyone had a chance to take a better look at it.

“Yes, they are the lowest but I would like time to digest the information before sending it in front of the full board,” Welter said.

The committee agreed to table it until their next meeting before sending it to the board, even if that means holding a special meeting before the May board meeting.

“There is a slow, but sure, trend we are seeing,” said James Theuri, agriculture and natural resources unit educator with University of Illinois Extension. “There are more townships allowing people to raise chickens in their yard.”

He said the May 14 poultry workshop will show people how to raise happy chickens.

“We are there to dispel myths,” he said. “The workshop is open to anyone, from the commercial grower to the

“It’s a great tool for us to keep the school safe from contraband,” District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said. “(Interquest manager) Glenn (VadeBonCoeur) has been great to work with in collaboration with Assistant Principal Jeff Johnson and School Resource Officer Steve Huettemann.”

The 10 to 15 one-half day visits are unannounced and Interquest acts as an agent of the school while being paid $320 a visit, according to the contract approved Monday.

The school provides a calender of inappropriate days for searches. Johnson said the school has used Interquest for at least seven years, as well as several local police agencies.

“Both are great ways to detect contraband,” Johnson said. “We do use Interquest more because it’s a nonaggressive dog. You can go through the school and students won’t notice nearly as much.”

It’s hard to say if there’s

been an increase or decrease in contraband found over the years, Johnson said, but he likes to think it will deter some kids from making poor decisions.

He said most parents support the searches and recognize it’s a common thing in schools these days.

“The hope is anyone caught with contraband has an eye-opener and makes better choices in the future,” Johnson said. “Students learn from it, but not all. There are some success stories.”

Interquest also is used by Coal City, Ottawa and formerly Minooka, Johnson said. A call to VadeBonCoeur wasn’t immediately returned Thursday.

Minooka woman painted, delivered thousands of tiny glass angels

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Marge Schlekeway of Minooka never will forget the angel bead and prayer shawl Bonelyn “Bonnie” Moss, 80, of Minooka gave to her adult daughter, Anne, when she was battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Now that Moss – known as “the angel lady” – has refused treatments for colon cancer, she is unable to hand-paint and distribute as many angels as she has in the past.

So Schlekeway, also an artist, is helping out. Schlekeway estimates she has painted about 300 of theses “symbols of love” in the past year, nowhere near the 3,500-strong Moss’ daughter, JoDonna Gautschy, said Moss has done.

Schlekeway, whose daughter has died since that first contact with Moss, is happy to do it. She praised Moss’ cheerfulness and servant’s heart, especially to other seniors.

“She’s helped so many people by picking them up and taking them to the doctor, grocery store or drugstore,” Schlekeway said. “Sometimes, she just sat and talked with them.”

For Moss, who said she’s very mission-minded, this was just the inspiration she needed.

She had lost her husband, Jack Moss, to complications from Alzheimer’s in 2007, and needed an outreach project.

So Moss, an artist who has painted acrylic on glass for wedding presents, bought a bag of glass beads and began painting. She learned quickly to bake the beads after painting them because one recipient said she had forgotten the bead in her pants pocket.

“The paint came right off in the laundry,” Moss said.

At first, Moss gave the angels to her family and friends, but as others saw them, more people wanted them. Soon, Moss was taking angels with her wherever she went, whether that was bingo or the hospital for cancer treatments.

MORRIS – The First Baptist Church of Morris will host its Spring Fling craft/vendor show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CHANNAHON – The Men’s Club at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Channahon will be holding a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at the St. Ann’s parish hall, 24500 S. Morris suffers extra-inning loss to DeKalb

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Many times, softball is a game of inches. An inch or two either way, and the game could go a different way.

Thursday was one of those days for the Morris softball team, as the Redskins dropped a 3-2 decision to Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival DeKalb in eight innings.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Morris’ Ashley Phelps hit a line drive that looked destined for right field and would have scored Janelle Brehm from second. However, DeKalb second baseman Mackenzie Riggs was able to catch it and keep the runner at second. With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the eighth, Redskin catcher Emily Moore send a screaming grounder just wide of third base that would have scored Jasmine Cook with the tying run and put Moore on second

with the winning run. It was, however, a foul ball and Moore hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

“A couple of inches on either of those, and it’s a different game,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “But, that’s the way it is. Sometimes those things go your way. Today, they didn’t go our way.

“Overall, I thought this was a great game. DeKalb is a good team and their defense did a great job. We played a good game. It came down to timely hits. They got a couple and we weren’t able to.”

The timeliest came from DeKalb’s Claire Koertner, who singled through the middle in the top of the eighth to score Erin Karasewski with the winning run.

Morris (11-4, 1-2) scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, but was unable to score after that.

When it comes to fishing, change can be a good thing We all are creatures of habit. We get up at the same time, we follow the same morning routine, drive the same way to work, have the same breakfast day after day. Sure, once in a great while we might get “crazy” and try something new, then that, too, becomes a routine.

There is nothing wrong with this. In fact, wild creatures do the same thing. Left undisturbed, all wildlife will fall into predictable habits.

Every year, hordes of catfish hang out under my dock, waiting to spawn. All summer long, the same deer will mosey through the yard. The nest occupying my window sill always attracts a robin.

This understanding of routines is helpful when trying to pattern wildlife. But what about when you are trying to have a successful outing outdoors? Probably the most notable example I can think of relates to fishing.

Many of us fish the same bodies of water throughout the season. We grab the same rods, launch the boat the same

way and often times start fishing in exactly the same few spots time and time again. We also tend to use the same lures and presentations.

Having a few go-to confidence baits is a great thing. I rely on a couple of standards all the time. What I want us to think about though is how we present those baits. Focus on how you approach a brush pile, dock, stump, weed bed, whatever. Odds are we attack it and present to it the same way almost every single time.

This past week I really tried something different for my lake. I have been working hard at skipping lures, with a baitcast reel, across the water. The best way to describe it would be skipping the bait like you would skip a stone. It might sound easy, but to accomplish this with fishing gear can be quite the challenge. I’m getting pretty good at it. In fact, Sunday I loaded up and spent the entire afternoon skipping way under docks and deep under overhanging brush.

OPINION ‘Little Boy’ movie fights big labels Voters at the Toronto International Film Festival created a stir in 2006 when they gave the long-shot drama “Bella” the People’s Choice Award, a prestigious salute that often precedes Oscar nominations.

Then critics began focusing on a key detail: The unmarried waitress at the heart of the indie flick’s plot struggles to decide whether to have an abortion, but then decides not to after being befriended by Jose, a former soccer star with a complex, tragic past. Also, the film was drawing public support from pro-life groups, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Was this a “Christian,” or even “anti-abortion” movie?

Meanwhile, a New York Times review called “Bella” a “mediocre cup of mush” and an “urban fairy tale.”

“The minute someone wrote that this was a ‘pro-life’ movie, there were some people who set out to destroy it,” said Eduardo Verastegui, who played Jose. “We saw ‘Bella’ as a movie about faith and family in Latino communities and the importance of relationships built on respect. ... But soon people were talking about the labels, instead of our movie.”

Now the same creative team is back with “Little Boy,” an indie film about faith, family, friendship and the ties that bind, along with one or two near-miraculous plot twists. Once again, writer-director Alejandro Monteverde, actor-producer Verastegui and other “Bella” veterans are headed into the tense territory that divides theater seats and sanctuary pews.

Verastegui stressed that there is no need to deny the role that faith plays in this film and in the lives of some of its creators. The question is whether mainstream artists today can – as they did in Hollywood’s past – make family-friendly movies about these kinds of stories without being stuck with a “Christian movie” label that many view as limiting, if not a cultural curse. “You may hear from someone who says, ‘This movie helped me forgive my father.’ ” Verastegui said. “Or maybe it’s, ‘This movie made me want to spend more time with my family,’ or ‘This movie helped me decide to keep my baby,’ or ‘This movie made me want to help the poor and the needy.’ ”

Raise hurdles for repeat DUI offenders James Stitt unwittingly has become the poster child for stricter laws to prevent repeat drunken drivers from putting more lives in jeopardy.

Stitt was 23 when he caused a crash that eventually killed Caitlin Weese, 17, who was driving near Gilberts to her Wonder Lake home in May 2003.

It wasn’t the first time Stitt had been caught driving drunk. Even at his young age, Stitt had two prior DUI convictions.

Stitt was sentenced to 7 1 ⁄2 years in prison and was given his driver’s license back in 2013 – about four years after his release. He was charged again with DUI in November 2014.

Weese’s stepfather, Joel Mains, was rightly outraged that the man who killed his stepdaughter even had the opportunity to pick up his fourth DUI arrest while

driving with a valid driver’s license. He’s been pressing lawmakers, including his former political opponent, state Rep. Barbara Wheeler, R-Crystal Lake, for legal reforms.

Under the law, DUI offenders who are eligible to get their license back are required to drive for a year with an ignition interlock device that prevents their car from starting if they blow more than a 0.025 percent blood-alcohol content. The device is removed if they complete that year successfully.

Wheeler and Mains helped craft House Bill 3533, which would prevent repeat DUI offenders from applying for their unrestricted licenses until they’ve gone five years with restricted driving privileges. It also increases the duration of the interlock device to five years.

No one is naive enough to

think some repeat drunken drivers won’t break the law anyway and continue to drive drunk – only counseling can help them.

Unfortunately, this happens often, but those drivers put themselves at great legal and financial risks even if they are driving sober illegally.

But the thought of the state legally sanctioning repeat drunken drivers by giving them unfettered privileges without very high hurdles to clear puts the rest of us – including promising young lives such as that of Caitlin Weese’s – at risk.

People make mistakes, but allowing repeat offenders to make the same mistake over again and handing them their driver’s license without significant obstacles is the state of Illinois’ mistake.

It’s a mistake that should be corrected through this legislation.

Make declarer work for his winners

CELEBRITY CIPHER

Fred Allen, a comedian who died in 1956, said, “A celebrity is a person who works hard all his life to become well-known, then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized.”

In bridge, part of the job of defenders is to make declarer work hard for his contract. It is frustrating for the defenders if they effectively gift declarer the tricks that he needs.

In this deal, for example, how should West make South work hard for his six-club contract after West leads the heart king?

South opened with a textbook three clubs: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. North was surprised to learn that his side had a 13-card fit, and he might have immediately jumped to six clubs.

If South also had the spade ace, he would have opened one club, not three clubs. But North cautiously used Blackwood before settling South into six clubs.

Declarer has 11 top tricks: one heart, three diamonds and seven clubs. He must get a spade trick.

But does West hold the spade ace or queen?

South wins the first trick with dummy’s heart ace, and East drops the two, giving count in the suit and showing an odd number.

Declarer cashes dummy’s three diamond winners, discarding his remaining heart, and ruffs the heart jack in his hand. Then he leads a spade toward dummy’s king-jack.

West must smoothly play second hand low. He knows his side needs two spade tricks to defeat the contract. He must not save declarer a guess by winning with the ace – or by thinking about it for a moment.
