The Gardner Fire Protection District responded to the scene of Tuesday’s accident.

JON MICHAEL BARNARD Born: Aug. 13, 1960 Died: April 11, 2015

Jon Michael Barnard, 54, of Greenbrier, Arkansas, passed away suddenly, of natural causes, on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

He was born August 13, 1960, in Evergreen Park, Illinois to Ronald Barnard and Janice (Grimes) Barnard.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Barnard; and nephew, Mark Hartman.

Jon is survived by his loving wife, of nearly 28 years, Christi Barnard of Greenbrier; and four devoted children, daughter, Haleigh of Greenbrier; and sons, Ryan, of Conway, Jon Michael and wife Miranda of Greenbrier, and Connor of Greenbrier. He is also survived by sisters, Leigh Ann Hall (Kevin) of Morris, IL and Denise Hartman (Ed) of Chicago, IL; and brothers, Tom

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said staff from his office was on the scene Tuesday morning and are investigating the accident’s cause.

Jon was a graduate of Coal City High School in Illinois, and American Trades Institute, where he learned the trade of welding.

He was employed as a welder for Center Point Energy for the past 20 years, where he was privileged to work with some of his closest friends.

Jon accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior 29 years ago, and his life was changed forever.

A member of Grace Baptist Church in Conway, Arkansas for 25 years, Jon was passionate about helping others find the love of God. He faithfully drove the church bus route, making sure children and families had a ride to church, taught Sunday school, and worked in the Youth Ministry.

It was also important to Jon to help individuals with special needs.

He loved volunteering for the Special Olympics and participated in many of their local fund-raising and outreach events.

Jon, a proud father of four, loved sports and was an avid spectator at his children’s sporting events throughout the years.

He loved his children dearly and was very proud of them and

their achievements.

He gave his children unconditional love and constant support, as he watched them grow into wonderful adults.

They were his pride and joy, and one of his greatest accomplishments.

Jon was a man who lived every second of his life putting the needs of others before his own.

Whether it was spending time with his family, giving his very best effort on the job, faithfully volunteering his time and energy to his church or Special Olympics, Jon invested tirelessly in the task at hand, while expecting nothing in return.

Jon loved the Lord, adored his family, had a true servant’s heart, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Grace Baptist Church Youth Ministries, 1540 Trison Lane, Conway, AR 72034.

Viewing will be held Thursday, April 16th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Roller McNutt Funeral Home, 115 South Broadview Greenbrier, AR with funeral services taking place Friday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 61 Green Valley Drive, Greenbrier Arkansas.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Hall, Darrin Gainer, Freddie Miller, Keith Cates, David Hargrove, and Jon Crawford. Burial will take place at Springhill Cemetery, 25 Hwy 287, Greenbrier, AR.

High school students present their take on ‘Grease’ classic

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – High school theater programs rarely feature as much male talent as female talent.

Morris is one of the fortunate few, and that’s why Alyssa Napolitano, choir director at Morris Community High School, said she chose “Grease” as the school’s 2015 spring musical.

“We have a very strong senior class this year,” Napolitano said. “We decided ‘Grease’ would be the best way to showcase the balance between male and female talent that we have.”

Senior Adam Roseland plays Danny Zuko, a teenager who meets Sandy Dumbrowski (senior Haleigh Zorn) during summer break. He later discovers she’s attending his school after Betty Rizzo (junior Megan Carey) and the Pink Ladies – Frenchy (senior Sophie Gaska), Marty (freshman Avery Baetzel) and Jan (senior Arielle Robinson) – arrange for Sandy to meet him.

The cast was faced with the task of being “cooler” than they are in real life, according to Cole Enervold, a senior who plays Kenickie, Danny’s best friend.

“All of us have to seem cooler than we actually are,” Enervold said. “We aren’t greasers.”

Cast members had different ways to prepare for their roles.

Roseland spoke to his grandmother and uncle about the 1950s and '60s. “Grease” is set in 1959.

“My grandma told me, ‘You need to have sass. They were punks,’ ” Roseland said.

Roseland and Enervold also flashed back to “Bye Bye Birdie,” which is set in 1958. The school performed the musical in their freshmen years.

“I always asked myself, ‘How would Sandy act in this situation?’ ” Zorn said. “I used that to help play the role.”

Zorn said she has more sass in her own personality than Sandy does, so she put her own twist on the character.

Enervold said it’s important to show a bit of your own personality.

“With any character, you have to put your own twist on it,” Enervold said. “There’s nothing in the script that tells you how to say a line.”

Morris to travel to 1959 with musical

LOCAL NEWS Board encounters quirks in new software

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Board members worked through technical issues Tuesday night as they rolled out new software designed to increase transparency.

The board approved the new software in December, called IQM2, at a cost of $16,000.

“When you launch any new software system, you may have issues,” County Board Chairman David Welter said after the meeting. “It didn’t hinder what the board was attempting to do.”

The software, made by Accela Inc., will help manage county agendas, minutes and supporting documents by streamlining internal processes and getting informa-

tion out to the public in a more accurate and timely manner.

Board Member John Roth spoke up at the beginning of the meeting, saying the agenda on the screen and the one Welter was reading from didn’t match the one on his iPad, which gives board members access to documents via an application.

“I had opened an old version and I didn’t realize I had to close out of it and reopen the app to get the most recent version of the agenda,” Roth said after the meeting.

He said it’s too early to see all the benefits of the software, but he likes the ability for each individual committee to update what they need to.

“It should keep the paper work down, and provide more transparency,” Roth said.

David Welter Grundy County Board chairman also had issues with one of the pages coming up on the software, but he said he believes the benefits will outweigh the issues the board faced on its first use.

The county’s new IT director, Tim Doss, said they have set up multiple training sessions to help get people up to speed.

“We had training prior to tonight’s meeting,” Doss said.

Kristen Torkelson, technology supervisor with the county, said she has upload-

ed historical documents, and the information, along with meeting recordings, will be available on the county’s new website when it launches.

Welter said the new website should be online within the next month.

Grainger incentive approved

In other news, the board also approved the four-year property tax rebate incentive for the W.W. Grainger expansion located in Economic Project Development Area

No. 1, in the hopes Grainger will choose its Minooka site to expand.

Three agenda items were removed or sent back to committee.

Approval of the State’s Attorney’s office security installation was sent back to the Law & Justice Committee because the meeting was canceled last week and the committee hadn’t approved the resolution.

The approval of revised Grundy County Rules and Procedures was sent back to committee to clarify wording on some of the proposed changes.

The approval of surrendering Grundy County jurisdiction over certain Brisbin Road Properties was sent back until an annexation agreement could be signed.

Grundy officials host 4-H Government Day Students participate in mock trial, mock board meeting, tour the jail

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County 4-H held Tuesday its annual Government Day for students from local schools.

Invitations are sent in January to area schools asking students to choose a government job they are interested in.

Students write an essay to an official with his or her reasons for selecting the position, said John Davis, youth development educator at the University of Illinois Extension/ Grundy, Will and Kankakee counties.

About 10 percent of those who wrote an essay are chosen to participate in the program, which has taken place for more than 20 years.

This year, about 80 out of 750 students who submitted essays were selected.

At the courthouse, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland compared the role of

Company’s 2014 bankruptcy filing concerns several districts

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee discussed Monday where the county stands with a Reichhold Inc. bankruptcy filing from September.

Reichhold has a plant at 6350 E. Collins Road in Morris, which pays into multiple area taxing bodies, including Grundy County, Gooselake Township, Gooselake Township Road District, Joliet Junior College, Coal City Community Unit School District 1, Coal City Library District and Coal City Fire District.

“They are a major international company that creates resin for paint at their Grundy County facility,” Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman said. “They are selling off their U.S. plants. They owe $535,000 in real estate

taxes, with the major taxing body being Coal City School District.”

The county board’s Finance Committee approved joining with the school district and other taxing bodies in seeking a claim.

The county collector is listed on the claim as the creditor and is represented by attorney Stuart Whitt of Whitt Law LLC in Aurora.

The firm is filing paperwork to make sure the collector is recognized as a creditor in the proceedings.

Rudman said the county is owed 15 percent of the $535,000 in real estate taxes due, and by partnering with the other taxing districts, they would each split the cost of legal fees.

“The county counts on that revenue. Everyone that sets up shop should be responsible for paying their part of

taxes,” Board Chairman David Welter said.

The county’s portion of the legal fees is about $1,175, or 15 percent of an estimated $7,500 in lawyer fees.

Each taxing body will pay a percentage of the fees equivalent to the percentage of the tax bill.

Jason Smith, chief school business official with Coal City Community Unit School District 1, said he hopes the taxing districts get their extension to make sure they are paid.

“We are hopeful that we will get a quick resolution,” Smith said Tuesday.

According to the Reichhold Inc. website, the company announced it filed Sept. 30, 2014, for voluntary protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S.

The action was taken to facilitate a restructuring of company debts, which represents only the U.S. portion of the global Reichhold organization.

Reichhold affiliates located outside the United States were not included in the filing.

“All Reichhold manufacturing, sales, laboratories

and customer service operations in the United States, and throughout the world, are conducting business as usual,” according to the website.

The petition, filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, listed more than $500 million in debt the company owed and less than $500 million in assets, according to reports.

No houses might mean no Home for the Holidays walk

“The style of music and the character are not at all similar to ‘Cinderella,’ which we did last year,” Roseland said.

“It allowed me to broaden my horizons. Danny is nothing like Prince Charming, who I played in ‘Cinderella.’ ” Enervold said he’s only played small roles before. A lead role helped him understand the importance of leadership.

“Kenickie was always my favorite character,” Enervold said. “I was ecstatic when I got the news because I’ve always had smaller roles.”

For Zorn, it was a new experience being in an upbeat and

fun production.

She’s only played serious roles before.

Napolitano told the cast to sing a lot and invest time in finding who their character is as a person. She talked with the cast about the ups and downs of teenage life.

“Although it is set in 1959, some of the problems still exist,” she said.

Performing a musical better known as a movie – the musical debuted in 1971 and the movie premiered in 1978 – presents a challenge in meeting audience expectations, Napolitano said.

3 ripe pears, not peeled, halved, cored 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, divided ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts 4 teaspoons honey, divided ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (5.3 ounce) carton nonfat vanilla yogurt Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Spray an 8-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick spray. Arrange pears, cut side up in the 8-inch baking dish.

Brush pears lightly with 1 tablespoon of melted butter.

Place on one side of the oven.

Bake, uncovered, 20 minutes, or until pears are tender when pricked with a fork.

Meanwhile, place oats in a small

mixing bowl and drizzle with remaining ½ tablespoon melted butter. Stir to coat well. Stir in walnuts, 3 teaspoons honey and cinnamon and stir to coat evenly.

Spread the oat mixture in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Bake, uncovered, alongside the pears for 7 to 8 minutes or until golden brown, stirring every 3 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside. Stir remaining 1 teaspoon of honey and vanilla into yogurt.

To serve, place a warm pear, cut side up, in an individual serving dish.

Drizzle with about 1 tablespoon of yogurt mixture and sprinkle with about 2 tablespoons oat mixture.

EDGE program needs to end SPRINGFIELD – When it comes to business, Illinois government has churned out more sweetheart deals over the last decade than a lovelorn teenager on Valentine’s Day. We have taken to paying businesses to move here. And if they threaten to leave, we’ll give them more bucks to just stick around. In other words, the politicians in Springfield think they can decide better than consumers who the winners and losers in the marketplace should be.

Folks, the only sure-fire losers in this scheme are ordinary taxpayers. We are paying higher taxes so some big business can pay less. Worse yet, we are asking mom-and-pop businesses to compete against corporate behemoths that are sucking in the subsidies.

Liberals call the practice “Corporate Welfare.” Conser-

Since 2001, the state has doled out about $1 billion in giveaways to corporations through the EDGE tax credit program. And most of that money didn’t go to companies bringing jobs to Illinois.

Instead it went to companies threatening to move jobs out of the state. Talk about rewarding bad behavior.

When one business gets special help, its competitor down the street may have to lay off workers because they can no longer compete.

In the waning weeks of his administration, Gov. Pat

Quinn promised about $100 million to companies.

When he took office in January, Gov. Bruce Rauner put those promises on hold. But last week, he freed the money for those businesses.

A Rauner spokeswoman told me Friday that the administration felt it should honor the commitments made by the previous administration.

Well, that’s a step in the right direction. But it’s time for the EDGE program to come to an end. The best way to promote jobs in Illinois is to improve the business climate for all employers – not just a select few.

Be prepared for severe weather, Grundy County Last week’s EF4 tornado tore through northern Illinois with little regard for anything in its path.

Two people were killed in tiny Fairdale in DeKalb County. Many others were injured.

Homes and businesses were destroyed.

Thankfully, the Grundy County area was spared this time – although we can certainly empathize with our neighbors to the north, as the tornado that struck the Coal City-Diamond area in 2013 is still in our minds.

Next time, however, we might not be as fortunate.

That’s why we need to be prepared for when severe weather hits, including tornadoes.

The majority of Illinois tornadoes occur between April 1 and June 30 between the hours of 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. There is an average of 47 tornadoes per

year in Illinois.

Last year, Illinois experienced 48 tornadoes that resulted in two injuries and nearly $5 million in damage to homes and crops. In 2013, the state saw 54 tornadoes.

Tornado safety tips:

• Before a tornado, review your family emergency plan so your family knows what it should do. Stock your emergency kit and make sure your family knows where it is. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days. Establish a safe zone in your home, preferably in the basement or in a small interior room or hallway. Make sure everyone knows where to go for shel-

ter. Have a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio or an AM/FM radio in your house that everyone knows how to use. Make sure your radio is battery-operable and you have a fresh supply of batteries on hand.

• During a tornado, take shelter immediately. Go to your pre-identified safe zone to protect yourself from glass and other flying objects. If possible, seek shelter under a piece of large, sturdy furniture, such as a large table or workbench, to protect yourself from falling debris or flying objects. Stay away from windows and don’t open them. If you’re not at home, seek shelter in the basement or an interior room of a nearby, sturdy building. Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car. Instead, leave it immediately. If no shelter is available,

Morris endures tough loss to Kaneland

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It can be difficult for a team to walk away from a loss with positive feelings.

Morris’ 1-0 loss Tuesday to Northern Illinois Big-12 rival Kaneland was one such occasion.

The Redskins did almost everything they wanted to do, except come out on the winning end.

Morris (5-2, 0-2) played the Knights to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Redskins had a few scoring opportunities in the first 40 minutes, incuding a shot by Emily Burling that was saved. Although it appeared that the ball went over the goal line, it was not ruled a goal.

The game went back and forth as each team’s defense stifled any threat from the other.

Finally, with 26:31 remaining, players got caught up in a scramble in front of the Morris net, with Redskins goalie Maren Bashor making at least three saves.

The Redskins kept the ball clear of the goal, but Kaneland’s Kiandra Powell got off a shot that bounced off the right goal post and went in.

“We anticipated that this was going to be our toughest game of the season,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said.

“They beat us last year, 3-0 and 4-0. I am very proud of the way the girls played tonight. We asked them to give 110 percent, and they did.

“Maren Bashor did a great job in goal tonight. She made a lot of nice saves and kept it together back there.”

Morris pressured Kaneland throughout the second half but never found the back of the net.

Summer Shaw and Amanda Grant had direct kicks that were saved, and Emily Burling and Addison Polite performed a give-and-go sequence that resulted on a shot going just wide of the net.

In the final 10 minutes, Katherine Gallick had three shots, two of which were saved and one that went wide.

Kristen Porter Morris girls soccer coach Sycamore last week, Porter saw miles of improvement from her team, which travels to Yorkville on Thursday.

“That last game, we did not play very well,” she said. “Tonight, we came out in the first five to 10 minutes and made a statement. They weren’t expecting us to be as aggressive as we were, and we kept it up the whole game. It was so exciting to see our girls play so well. This is a game that we could have won, but for

them to play so well, I am very proud of them. This is the best I have seen the team play, so even with a loss, we can take a lot away from this game that’s positive.”

One of the positive notes is that the team is back to

full strength. Shaw returned from an injury to bolster the defense, and other players returned from injuries and vacations, as well.

“It was good to have us at full strength finally,” Porter said. “We have lots of good

subs, too, and everyone that was on the field played well.

The girls were communicating out there and the captains did a good job of motivating them. If we can keep playing like this, there’s good things ahead.”

STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – So far for the Morris baseball team, it’s been a season in which the Redskins have had to scratch and claw for every win and, sometimes, every run.

It was different Tuesday, as Morris put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four more in the bottom of the fourth en route to a 9-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win over Kaneland.

“We hit the ball well today,” Morris coach Todd Kein said.

“We needed to after yesterday (a 4-3 loss to Kaneland). We didn’t get our first hit until the sixth inning in that game, so it was nice to put up a few right away in this one.”

Tyler Bordner had a pair of doubles to help power the Redskins (8-6-1, 1-1), while winning pitcher Matt Walker was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Also delivering two hits were Emmett Chouinard, Tom Cheshareck and Jake McDonald, while Cody Niewinski slugged a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.

Walker went the distance, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six.

He struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.

“Matt threw well,” Kein said. “He hasn’t had the lead very often this year, so it was nice to see him go out there with a few runs to work with.

“We did well in all three phases. We hit well, Matt pitched well and our defense played much better.”

Coal City 4, Westmont 1:

Freshman Leslie Youskevtch struck out 10 for the Coalers (3-5), while Makenna Emerson powered the offense with a home run. Abbey Spesia also contributed an RBI.

On tax day, let’s look at a deal many of my students find taxing.

First, look at only the West hand.

South opens one spade, West makes a takeout double, North jumps to four spades, and everyone passes. What should West lead?

Note North’s four-spade raise. With a weak hand, he follows the guidance from the Law of Total Tricks: with 10 combined trumps, bid to the 10-trick level.

West’s best opening lead is not obvious. If he is due to collect tricks with each of his honor cards, he should cash the spade ace, then exit with a diamond. Here, though, that does not work well. To have any chance West must lead a low club. Then, how should East-West play to defeat four spades?

Many years ago, I was asked: What is the one thing I teach my students that they never seem to get straight and I cannot understand why? This was my answer: Third hand’s playing the bottom of touching honors.

In this deal, when West leads his club two, East must play the jack, not the queen. Then, when South takes the trick with his ace, West knows that East must have the queen (otherwise, South would have won with the queen, not the ace). So, after West gets in with his spade ace, he should lead a second low club. This puts East on play for the fatal heart shift through South’s king-jack into the jaws of West’s acequeen. The defenders take one spade, two hearts and one club. ******
