Born: Aug. 7, 1924; in Joliet, IL Died: April 10, 2015; in Morris, IL Carolyn J. Baker, 90, of Morris, formerly of rural Minooka, passed away early Friday morning, April 10, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Plattville Lutheran Church with Rev. Bret L. Reedy officiating.

Interment will follow in Seward Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris.

Born August 7, 1924, in Joliet, she was the daughter of Charles and Esther (Thompson) Borghi. She graduated from Joliet Township High School. She married George Baker on August 31, 1952, in Joliet and they lived all of their married life in rural Minooka.

Surviving is one daughter, Deborah (Stephen)Smith of Erie, PA; one sister, Dorothy Taylor of Pekin; and one sister-in-law, Jean Jacobson of Portland, OR. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband in 2002.

She was a member of the Plattville Lutheran Church. Carolyn enjoyed needle work, sewing and watching the Chicago Cubs. Memorials may be given to the Plattville Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society.

Richard E. Betzwiser, passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2015.

Survived by his loving children, Jodi (Steven) Etienne; Mark (Heidi) Betzwiser and Robert “Tony” (Jill)

Arnold; grandchildren, Christina and Thomas Betzwiser and Amanda and Noah Arnold; one sister, Helen Linden. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Angela (nee Tierney) Betzwiser; his devoted wife of 39 years, Kay (nee Shingler) Betzwiser; siblings, Eileen, Francis and William.

Richard was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed working around his home, being outdoors, and spending time with his family. Member of St. Mary’s Church in Minooka since 1970. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Minooka at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minooka.

Born: Feb. 27, 1949; in Joliet, IL Died: April 8, 2015; in Morris, IL Walter “Wally” L. Hanson, 66, of Morris, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 8, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Pastor Patrick Lohse officiating.

Inurnment will follow in West Lisbon Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born February 27, 1949, in Joliet, he was the son of Noble and Margaret (Alsvig) Hanson. He graduated from Newark high School with the class of 1967. He married Janice Englert on October 12, 1968, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Morris. They lived most of their married life in Sheridan and Morris.

Wally served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1968 to 1972. For 30 years he was employed as an inspector at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Aurora.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Janice; two sons,

Morris W. Hay, 85, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015, in Morris, Illinois. Born October 20, 1929 in Milford Township, Rockwood, Pennsylvania the son of the late James O. and Hazel Hay. Survived by his wife, Marcella Powell Hay; son, Stephen L. (Jayme) Hay, Lexington, NE; and daughter, Heather (Jason) Moore, Morris, IL. He is also survived by sister, Rose Marie Keichel of Kirkland, OH. There are also three beloved grandchildren, Clint Hay, Brookings, S.D. and Olivia and Dawson Moore of Morris, IL. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James B. Hay and Dean S. Hay; sister, Lillian Kaufman; and infant daughter, Kristi E. Hay. Morris was a veteran of the Air Force, having served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He was also a manager in Publications with Rockwell/Collins Radio. Morris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Cremation will be accorded and there will be a memorial service at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at a later date.

• David L. Taylor, 54, of Braidwood, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Wednesday on charges of driving under the influence and resisting a peace officer. He also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol and operating an uninsured vehicle.

• David B. Funte, 22, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Tuesday on a failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of burglary.

• Dakota J. Jones, 21, of Braceville, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday on charges of driving while license revoked and possession of cannabis 2.5 to 10 grams.

Firefighter candidates, personnel train at Midwest Fire Training Academy on Sunday

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As firefighter candidates crawled through the doorway, smoke pouring out above them, trainers shouted at them, warning them not to touch each other.

The heat from the fire inside the flashover training module could cause serious burns if it touched the candidates’ protective gear.

A record number of firefighters and candidates were on hand Sunday at the Chief Shabbona Fire Academy, hosted by Exelon Generation at the company’s Midwest Fire Training Academy in Morris.

This year, there were 115 participants from 30 fire departments who participated in one of four training sessions – basic firemanship, auto extrication, arson investigation and leadership.

“As usual, we do this to support our local fire departments,” said Kelly Cavanaugh, supervisor of the Exelon Midwest Fire Training Academy.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind facility that offers many firsthand training they couldn’t otherwise get.”

Coal City Fire Protection District Chief James Sheldon said he believes having his candidates at the training gives them knowledge they need to do their job.

Candidates spend 210 hours from January to May training to get their basic firefighter certification.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do since my accident four years ago,” said Goose Lake resident Ryan DeBerry, one of the candidates participating from the Coal City Fire District. “If it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t be alive.”

DeBerry was in a car accident four years ago. First responders were on the scene quickly and got him the help he needed. Now, at 19, he is training to be a full-time firefighter.

He said he has participated in training at house burns, but he hadn’t seen anything like the flashover training module.

“It shows us what to look out for when we are in the real situation,” he said.

Candidates from the spring 2015 class said the training gives them more than just situational knowledge. It also gives them hands-on expe-

Mike McPherson, a 20-yearold Morris resident, has wanted to be a firefighter since he was 13.

He started preparing for his career by going to fire science classes at the Grundy Area Vocational Center while a high school student and now is a candidate at Chief Shabbona.

LOCAL NEWS District 101 board approves preparation of next budget

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community High School District 101 board approved 6-0 Monday the preparation of a tentative budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 and running through June 30, 2016. District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran will submit a tentative budget in May for board review, and a final budget will be voted on at a June board meeting.

“We have some larger projects coming up maintenance-wise that quite frankly have been put off due to lack of funds, but they need to be done,” District 101 Board President Dennis Best said.

In other District 101 financial news, the Illinois State Board of Education gave the district a 2.75 Financial Profile Score, down from upward of 3.0 of years past. The scoring system has four indicators which combine as a method used to help monitor the finances of school districts and identify those in financial difficulty.

Halloran said the score was brought down after a recalculation by ISBE because the school has 89 days cash available – that is, the total number of days the district could operate with the cash currently available to it. The cut off for a 3.0 is 90 days.

“We’ve kept an even-keel approach to the ISBE score whether we had Financial Rec-

ognition score or a Financial Watch score,” Halloran said.

“We work to provide the best services with the resources available.”

The days cash value was higher in previous years because of using working cash bonds for projects, Halloran said. Additionally, only three of four categorical payments from the state have come in.

Halloran said that in previous years the school would receive five payments instead of four and then forcing a payment to be backed out from the next year’s payments.

“The score is heavily based on available dollars at the state level,” Halloran said.

“It won’t change anything for us dollar-wise. It happened to multiple districts but never happened to us, until now.

Sometimes categorical payments don’t come in when expected and that changed our days cash on hand. It moved us from 3.2 out of 4 to 2.75.”

Halloran said both the expenditures-to-revenue ratio, which is weighted at 35 percent of the grade, and days cash, which is weighted at 10 percent, are the only indicators to bring the score down in District 101. In recent years, the district has been in the Financial Recognition designation of 3.54 to 4.00.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County recently received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Grundy County to use toward the purchase of a used cargo van.

We Care’s food pantry volunteers need cargo vans to pick up donated food items from local retail stores Monday through Saturday, according to a news release from We Care. In November, We Care received a donated cargo van and bought a worn minivan for $900. However, both vehicles became unreliable not long after they were donated and purchased.

The food pantry applied for a grant to be able to buy a better quality van.

Last week, We Care Operations Manager Lori Sandgren noticed a nice-looking used cargo van at Crase Auto Connection in Channahon. Sandgren approached salesman Tony Montgomery about We Care’s need. He was able to adjust the cost of the van, using the two older vans as trade-ins, to fit within We Care’s budget.

“With Crase Automotive’s cooperation, and the money from CFGC, we were able to purchase a 2001 Ford 150 Cargo van with 75,000 miles.

It has very little rust and we had it inspected by three mechanics before we purchased it. We are very happy to have this big problem solved with such a nice vehicle at a price we could afford,” Gaska said.

The board also approved an amended 2015-16 school calendar as a result of winter weather closings. The vote added four makeup days, moving the final day of school to June 3 instead of May 28. It will be submitted to ISBE for approval.

Looking ahead to the next phase of school board membership, the board approved April 27 as the date for the reorganization of the school board, where two new members will be introduced. Best said leaving members will be presented with a plaque.

6 Braidwood to have new mayor

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Braidwood will have a new mayor by the end of this month after Jim Vehrs unofficially won an electoral rematch over Mayor Bill Rulien.

According to unofficial results, Vehrs won with 715 votes, 57 percent of the total, compared to 545 votes for Jim Vehrs Rulien.

Vehrs lost to Rulien in 2013 for mayor when the pair ran for a two-year, unexpired term. Rulien was the incumbent in both races after being appointed to the seat following former Mayor Jerry Pressley’s death in 2011. “All the volunteers worked quite hard to get me elected,” Vehrs said.

“I’d like to thank all the citizens of Braidwood who came out to vote, business organizations and owners and also my family.”

Vehrs also withstood a petition filing challenge by City Administrator and Police Chief Richard Girot en route to winning the election.

Vehrs credited more marketing and his previous experience running for mayor as keys to his victory. Vehrs, 54, has worked as a heavy equipment operator for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 for the last 25 years. He has a wife, Pamela Vehrs, three children and six grandchildren.

“I want to put the pride back in Braidwood,” Vehrs said.

Vehrs said some of his main goals for Braidwood are to bring in new business and re-

tail development, build a better relationship with the school district, and be a police-friendly town. “We have a reputation for our town of police harassing people,” Vehrs said. “That’s what people think.”

He said his goal is to prevent situations such as a driver getting a ticket for a broken taillight instead of getting a warning and being given time to fix the light.

But Vehrs’ main goal is to build a Dial-A-Ride senior citizens program that will enlist volunteers to drive seniors to doctors appointments and other destinations.

Vehrs said he decided to run again after he heard a referendum was put on last November’s ballot asking residents to raise taxes to fill a police pension fund that has spiraled out of control. “That pushed me over the edge,” he said, adding that residents shouldn’t have to bear the burden of previous administrations’ mistakes. The referendum ended up failing.

Rulien said he doesn’t plan to run for mayor again.

“We annexed hundreds of acres of land for future industrial or commercial development,” Rulien said of his accomplishments in office, adding that the city also attracted new businesses such as Casey’s General Store and Warren’s Collision Center.

But Rulien wished he had more time to accomplish longterm goals. “What I can say is, I did not run a negative campaign,” Rulien said, adding that he thought the race featured misinformation about him. “I did not put the name of any of my opponents on any literature, but there were many personal attacks against me.”

Board approves sending to full board conflict of interest waiver

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A Grundy County Board committee approved 6-0 to send to the full board a conflict of interest waiver so Rick Porter can be retained to work on an intergovernmental agreement for Brisbin Road pre-annexation efforts.

“Brisbin Road is relatively uncomplicated to look at but it isn’t found in textbooks or case law,” assistant state’s attorney Perry Rudman told the County Board’s Finance Committee during a meeting Monday night. “We need an expert to look over the agreement so we don’t overlook revenue that should come our way.”

The intergovernmental agreement, along with a memorandum of understanding, will need to be passed by all governmental entities involved to create a legal way for the county to recapture the cost of the road, which will ser-

vice the municipalities along each side of the road.

The 1,900 acres that line the road belong to two different municipalities: The east side is Minooka, the west side Morris.

County Board Chairman David Welter said the county can’t move forward and get pricing without the conflict of interest waiver signed. Porter works with the law firm of Hinshaw and Culbertson.

“Rick has worked with us on projects like the windmills, and he has worked with the city, as well,” Welter said.

“The waiver states that we know he has done work for both Grundy County and Morris.”

Morris Mayor Dick Kopczick said Monday it comes down to a matter of trust.

“He has worked for us on the community landfill and other projects,” Kopczick said.

“This waiver is the county stating they are aware he has

worked with us and they trust him, and then if we agree to sign the waiver it will be Morris saying he has worked for us and we trust him to work for the county in this agreement.”

Kopczick said the waiver is set to go in front of the city’s Finance Committee on Friday and on the council’s agenda next Monday.

Rudman said he feels better knowing that someone knowledgable about intergovernmental agreements will be working on the project.

Welter told the Finance Committee that the talks came together pretty quickly at the end of last week and he’d like

At the appointment, Englehaupt said his general practitioner also felt the lump and then told Englehaupt he was sending him to the hospital for some pictures. Englehaupt said he assumed “pictures” meant standard X-rays.

Englehaupt said he didn’t understand why he was the only man sitting in a waiting room of women, and why those women didn’t appear happy he was there. Finally, his name was called and he followed the technician to the imaging room.

“She told me I was going to have a mammogram,” Englehaupt said. “I said, ‘Whoa!

Wait a minute.’ ” Next, Englehaupt had an ultrasound for an intensified look at the nodule. A subsequent biopsy diagnosed it as cancer.

Englehaupt never returned to work, because of to shortness of breath and severe neuropathy in his feet, which he believes was caused by the radiation and chemotherapy.

Everyone has something to give

By DEVAN GAGLIARDO Community Foundation of Grundy County We’ve all heard the Golden Rule to do for others as you would want done unto you, or some variation of the phrase. Although it’s a biblical phrase, you don’t have to be biblical scholar to know this is just a good way to live life.

When I’m in social settings and start talking about giving and philanthropy, I often have others tell me they just don’t have the financial means to give. I hear many others say they don’t have the time to volunteer.

In any event, I truly believe everyone has something to give, whether it’s time, money, possessions, or a God-given talent.

We are coming up on garage sale season, the time of year when people are trying to declutter their lives and make a little money in the process.

Having a garage sale isn’t on my list of fun things; however, if you are someone who finds organizing a garage sale therapeutic then start setting out those tables.

But I would suggest donating what you don’t sell instead of repacking it and storing it in your house until the next sale.

There are several nonprofit organizations, such as Military Order of Purple Heart or Vietnam Veterans of America, that come right to your door to pick up your treasures.

Want to give more locally? There are several resale

stores in Grundy County including Goodwill and Under His Wings.

Don’t like that people have to pay for clothing? Donate to We Care of Grundy County where low-income Grundy County residents get to shop for free once a month.

On a side note, I want everyone to understand most places that charge for goods do so to support a larger mission such as a job training center, soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or shelter for women and children.

Speaking of spring cleaning: Have you come across an excess of towels and blankets that are outdated or wearing thin in some places?

Most animal shelters will take these to use for animal bedding or bathing.

A scared dog that just spent the last several nights looking for a safe place to lay his head doesn’t care if he is sleeping on a 1970s yellow and brown flower print blanket or a Rainbow Bright comforter that hasn’t been snuggled with since your 38 year old was 6.

Just Animals in Mazon and Grundy County Animal Control may be able to take some of these items off your hand. I would suggest calling first to make sure they have a need for these items.

If you are someone who would rather write a check than donate time, I could go on and on about places who would be happy to have you as a donor.

But since it is spring time, let talk about disasters. As I’m sure you are

aware, several Illinois communities were hit with tornados last week. The destruction is truly devastating to see.

The areas of Rochelle and Fairdale are seeing an outpouring of support. The water, toothpaste, blankets and clothing are nice; however, they are reporting the biggest need at this time is either gift cards or financial support.

If you choose to give to this area, please give to a reputable organization.

They have been listing some of them on local news stations, but we at the Community Foundation know of some foundations in DeKalb County that are accepting financial donations and would be happy to provide you with that information.

Perhaps you are someone who would rather give locally. After the floods in early 2013 and tornado in late 2013, several organizations came together to begin a disaster fund with the purpose of disbursing financial support to Grundy County major disaster victims quickly.

There now is a permanent Disaster Fund at the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

Although we hope we never have to use it again, we know there will come a day when another major disaster will strike Grundy County; therefore, we always are accepting financial support to continue growing that fund.

On this day 150 years ago, John Wilkes Booth snuck into Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., and shot President Abraham Lincoln.

About nine hours later, Lincoln, perhaps the greatest president this country has ever seen and a man deservedly revered in Illinois, was dead.

Days earlier, on April 9, 1865, the North had won the Civil War. A little more than a month before that – March 4, 1865 – Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address. Delivered from the steps of the U.S. Capitol, it is recognized as one of the most remarkable pieces of political prose ever written.

Today, to honor Lincoln on this somber anniversary, we republish the text of that speech: “At this second appearing to take the oath of the presidential office, there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. Then a statement, somewhat in detail, of a course to be pursued, seemed fitting and proper.

Now, at the expiration of four years, during which public declarations have been constantly called forth on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention, and engrosses the energies of the nation, little that is new could be presented.

The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself; and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all. With high hope for the future, no prediction in regard to it is ventured.

“On the occasion corresponding to this four years ago, all thoughts were anxiously directed to an

impending civil war. All dreaded it – all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place, devoted altogether to saving the Union without war, insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war – seeking to dissolve the Union, and divide effects, by negotiation. Both parties deprecated war; but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive; and the other would accept war rather than let it perish.

And the war came.

“One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was, somehow, the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union, even by war; while the government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it.

Neither party expected for the war, the magnitude, or the duration, which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with, or even before, the conflict itself should cease.

Each looked for an easier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding.

“Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not that we be not

judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has his own purposes. ‘Woe unto the world because of offences! For it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!’

“If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? “Fondly do we hope – fervently do we pray – that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man’s 250 years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said 3,000 years ago, so still it must be said ‘the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether’ “With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.”

Nearly everyone did the job at the plate for Morris, which finished with 17 hits.

Kjellesvik, Burns, Lines and Benson each had three hits, with Emily Moore and Jasmine Cook adding two each. Kjellesvik and Lines each had three RBIs, while Cook added two.

“Alex’s double was a game-changer,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “Then, she got on base with the tying run with no outs her next time up.

She hit the ball on the nose every time. Abby Burns swung the bat well today, too, and so did Leah Lines. She went the opposite way, she turned on it, she just had a good day at the plate.”

The Redskins needed a good day at the plate after Ottawa Marquette took a 6-0 lead after an inning and a half.

A three-run homer by Madelyn Thompson highlighted the outburst for the Crusaders before Burns relieved Ashley Phelps and shut down Marquette while the Redskins came back.

Burns did not allow a run until the top of the seventh, by which time the Redskins had scored 12 straight runs to take a 12-6 lead. Syd Stalker slammed a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.

“Abby came in and threw a lot of strikes,” Lowery said.

“She has been working on her control with her pitches and it showed.

“It took us a while to get going. We were kind of flat and in slow motion in the first two or three innings, but once we got going, we were fine. We did a good job of staying back on pitches and hitting the ball hard. Everyone, up and down the lineup, stepped up and did a good job today.”

MORRIS – For most of the season, the only time Alex Kjellesvik has seen the softball field has been as a courtesy runner.

On Monday afternoon against Ottawa Marquette, however, she got a chance to show what she can do in other parts of the game, and she delivered, providing the spark the Redskins needed to overcome an early 6-0 deficit and come away with a 12-8 victory.

Kjellesvik entered the game in the top of the third inning after right fielder Amanda Jenkins was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second and could not return to her position.

In the bottom of the third, with Morris trailing 6-1, Kjellesvik came up to bat with the bases loaded.

She connected on a 1-0 pitch, sending it on a line into the left-center field gap for a double that scored Abby Burns, Leah Lines and Melissa Benson to make it 6-4.

After Morris (10-4) added a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-5, Kjellesvik led off the fifth with a single to right and, when the ball got past the Marquette right fielder, she sped all the way around to third.

She scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Taya Torkelson, and Morris went on to score twice more in the inning, on an RBI single by Janelle Brehm and a sacrifice fly by Lines, to take an 8-6 lead.

To top it off, with Morris leading 12-8 in the top of the seventh, Marquette’s Cate Thompson lifted a fly ball to right-center, but Kjellesvik covered the ground and made a running catch to end the game.

“I was ready to play,” Kjellesvik said. “It felt really good when I got that first hit and I saw it go into the gap. That really got the team going. Even though we were down early, we didn’t feel like we had lost. Once a few girls

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It’s safe to say Morris baseball coach Todd Kein won’t write off Saturday’s 10-4 loss to Geneseo as the best effort the Redskins made this season.

The defense for Morris (75-1), which has been solid all year, struggled in the middle innings Saturday as Geneseo put up eight runs on four hits in the third and fourth innings combined.

“We made multiple defensive mistakes, and that’s unacceptable,” Kein said. “I don’t feel that Geneseo is a better team than we are. We gave them some runs and some bases that created opprtunities for them. You do have to tip your cap to them, since they took advantage of their opportunities, but we put ourselves in a bad position.”

The game was scoreless through two innings when Geneseo’s Hunter DeSplinter led off the top of the third with an infield single. A wild pitch sent him to second, and a grounder to third sent DeSplinter there.

After Greg Rusk walked, another grounder to third sent him to second. A passed ball allowed DeSplinter to score for a 1-0 lead before Jacob VanDoren walked.

Lane Akre then struck out, but a dropped third strike set him free and let Rusk score.

Another wild pitch brought home VanDoren.

After an errant pickoff throw scored Akre, Keaton Rice singled to bring home Kyle Gilmore, who had walked. Relief pitcher Colton Akre then retired Alex DeKuyser on a grounder to second to end the inning.

Morris answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The frame started with singles by Kendall Enger and Matt Walker, with Enger going to third on Walker’s hit.

Emmett Chouinard hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Enger and make the score 5-1.

Geneseo (10-0) put up three more in the third.

made outs, Rusk walked and went to second on a balk. Cooper Humphries then reached on a throwing error, allowing Rusk to score and VanDoren homered to left to make it 8-1.

In the fifth, Rice led Geneseo by getting hit by a pitch, then DeKuyser singled to right.

An infield fly by DeSplinter dropped in, and an errant throw to third allowed Rice to score and make it 9-1.

Morris mounted a rally in the bottom of the fith.

With one out, Walker walked and Chouinard beat out an infield single to short.

Tyler Bordner followed with a double off the centerfield fence that scored Walker, and Tom Cheshareck hit a ball to almost the exact same spot as Bordner, bringing home Chouinard. Cody Niewinski then grounded to second to score courtesy runner Jordan Miracle to make the score 9-4.

Geneseo added a run off reliever Thomas Dabney in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Morris actually outhit Geneseo 9-8, with Cheshareck collecting three hits and Bordner two. Other hits came from Walker, Chouinard, Chase Hansen and Enger.

“We hit the ball pretty well today,” Kein said. “But the disappointing things is the number of runs we got with the number of hits we had. We have to be more consistent.

We’ve had flashes of very good baseball, but we’ve also played very poorly at times. It’s no secret that we do have some limitations, but we can’t amplify them by playing poorly. I will never ask for perfection, but I

“Another plus today was the pitching of Colton Akre and Thomas Dabney. We don’t have a real deep staff, so to see them come in and throw strikes was encouraging.”

On Monday, the Redskins dropped a 4-3 decision to Kaneland to open the Northern Illinois Big 12 East season.

Cody Niewinski suffered the loss as Kaneland won on a walk-off hit with two outs in the seventh.

Niewinski allowed only four hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Kaneland scored first on a solo homer in the fourth. Morris (7-6-1, 0-1) answered with three runs in the sixth to take the lead. Kaneland responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it before winning it in the seventh.

Chouinard, Cheshareck, Niewinski, Hansen and McDonald had hits for Morris, which hosts Kaneland at 4:30 p.m. today, with Chouinard and Cheshareck each picking up an RBI.

Sanchez retains pitching poise against Joliet

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – In the midst of playing 10 baseball games in nine days, and with junior right-hander Joe Butler out for about a month with a thumb injury, Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic is searching for arms.

He might have found one Monday afternoon.

The Indians went against Joliet Catholic ace Drake Fellows and a stiff wind blowing straight in from center field in Monday’s nonconference game. They came up virtually empty at the plate, dropping a 2-0 decision.

However, Minooka senior right-hander Cristian Sanchez, an excellent defensive player wherever he is employed and the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, took the ball for the first time since he was a freshman.

Against a Hilltoppers’ lineup that generated two big offensive outbursts late last week, Sanchez worked six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking one.

“Cristian looked pretty good out there,” Jeff Petrovic said. “His offspeed stuff was not great, but he was able to keep them off-balance. That’s a credit to his competitiveness and his athletic nature. He’s got some guts. He gave us a chance today.”

The Indians (3-9) begin a three-game Southwest Prairie series against Plainfield Central today. Sanchez, who threw 83 pitches, likely will not throw in any of those games, but Petrovic said to expect to

see him on the mound again.

“He pitched well enough that he may be called on several more times this season,” Petrovic said. “Where he fits in will be determined later.

“It’s no fluke that he pitched well. He’s just a good baseball player. He didn’t strike out many (three, including two in the sixth inning) and we made all the plays behind him.”

Sanchez blanked Joliet Catholic (9-2) until the fourth.

Nick Dalesandro led off with a single, stole second, advanced

“Fellows has a pretty special arm,” Petrovic said. “We don’t run into that very often.

I don’t know that it makes us better on a daily basis to face someone like him, but it can’t hurt.

“We’ve proven lately that we at least can compete.”

The Indians’ only hits against Fellows and Dalesandro, who pitched a perfect seventh, were Jon Vesper’s single up the middle in the second inning and Laczynski’s infield hit in the third. Minooka had one baserunner after the third inning, when Zach Earls was hit by a pitch in the fifth.

Second baseman Jake Null, the Indians’ leadoff hitter, was back in the lineup for the first time since he injured a knee in a spill at first base in Wednesday’s game against Plainfield North.

“Jake wasn’t slated to go today, but he’s a competitive kid and wanted to play,” Petrovic said.

Minooka was without right fielder Nick Clemmons, whose father, Mark, died. A moment of silence was held in his memory before the game, and Petrovic talked with the Indians afterward about being there for their teammate.

In bridge, the first card played in a suit gives some information, but sometimes the second provides the key piece of data – as in this deal. How should the defenders card to try to defeat four spades after West leads his fourth-highest diamond?

South opened with a textbook vulnerable three-bid: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. North knew that his partner might lose the first four tricks, but maybe the game would be laydown, or West might find a losing lead (perhaps a singleton heart).

West chose to lead from his stronger minor.

East could see that his side had to take four minor-suit tricks; either three diamonds (West led from queen-fourth of diamonds) and one club, or two diamonds and two clubs.

First, after winning with his diamond king (low from touching honors when playing third hand high), East cashed the diamond ace. When West followed suit with his two, it told East that West had led from a five-card suit.

Then, needing two club tricks, what did East do?

If West had the club king, it wouldn’t matter, but in case West had only the queen, East shifted to his club two. Then he waited to see if South would guess correctly.

Finally, note that if West had led from a four-card diamond suit, he would have played a diamond higher than the five at trick two. Then East would have cashed his club ace before leading his last diamond. ******

Physical therapist can help loosen stiff spine, joints Dear Dr. K: I have ankylosing spondylitis. Can you discuss this condition and the best way to treat it?

Dear Reader: Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis in which the spine and other joints become inflamed and stiff.

A person with this condition usually feels pain or stiffness in the lower back, especially in the morning or after inactivity. Pain tends to begin in the two joints between the spine and the pelvis (the sacroiliac joints) and be felt in the buttocks. It then works its way up the lower spine. Eventually, the disorder can affect the entire spine and can cause discomfort in the torso and legs. Symptoms may alternately improve and

As the spine and its support structures stiffen, a person may begin to stoop over.

The stoop can become very severe. With time, the bones of the spine can fuse or grow together. This causes an extremely stiff, rigid backbone.

In addition to the spine and joints of the chest, ankylosing spondylitis can inflame the hip joints and fingers and toes. People with

the disease also appear to be at greater risk for developing inflammation elsewhere in the body: the eyes (a condition called uveitis), the intestines (inflammatory bowel disease) and the inflammatory skin disease called psoriasis.

Pain and rigidity in the lower back can cause extreme pain and problems walking.

At some point, a back brace or other device, such a corset, cane or joint splints, may help.

A rigid spine and stiff joints between the ribs and breastbone may make it harder for the chest to expand. As a result, it may be difficult to take a deep breath. Breathing exercises can help maintain your lung capacity. If you smoke, quitting should be a

priority. If you can’t take in a deep breath because of this disease, adding lung damage from smoking puts you at greater risk for severe breathing problems and pneumonia.

In people with ankylosing spondylitis, stiffness often improves with activity. Regular exercise can help prevent the disorder from getting worse.

A physical therapist can develop an exercise routine to help the spine remain flexible. The routine probably will include range-of-motion and stretching exercises.

Abdominal and back exercises can help you maintain good posture so you are less likely to stoop. Swimming is a good exercise because it may be easier to move stiff, painful areas in the water. Biking is

another good option.

Hot baths, heat and massage can help to relieve pain.

Try to sleep on your back on a firm mattress. Use a small pillow or none at all.

Many medications can help to reduce joint pain and inflammation. These include anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers. The FDA also has approved TNF blockers to treat ankylosing spondylitis.

These blockers are powerful new drugs that block the activity or production of TNF, a substance in the body that causes inflammation. Usually, surgery is not needed.
