By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – First United Methodist Church welcomed a new senior pastor last July, the Rev. Robert Sathuri, whose Christian roots run the way back to his family in India.

Sathuri and his wife, Teresa, were both born and raised in India, and since their arrival, the couple has quickly connected with the congregation.

It wasn’t really that difficult, the minister said.

The Sathuris have lived in the United States for more than 20 years, moving here first so Robert could earn his master of divinity degree at Northwestern University’s Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston.

They stayed to serve God in Methodist churches throughout Illinois.

Teresa received her nursing degree in the United States and works as a nurse at Park Pointe Senior Living in Morris.

The pastor said he is happy to be in Morris.

“It’s a great community to be a part of,” he said, “and it’s a very nice church family. We are honored to be here.”

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A Romeoville man charged in a recent Coal City shooting was released from jail after a family member posted his $100,000 bail.

Webster was being held on a $1 million bond, in which 10 percent, or $100,000 cash, was required for his release, according to court records. His bail was posted Thursday and Walter L. he was released Webster with an April 30 court date.

Walter L. Webster of Romeoville, the suspect in last week’s Coal City shooting, turned himself in Wednesday at the Grundy County Jail.

He is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery after authorities said he shot Adam Fierro, the owner of Horse Shoe Transportation Company of Braidwood.

Authorities responded at 8:10 p.m. April 1 after numerous residents reported hearing shots fired near the Shell gas

station at 725 E. Division St. in Coal City.

Fierro was found bleeding from gunshot wounds to his body after his vehicle struck an unoccupied vehicle at the Shell station. During an altercation, Fierro allegedly was shot at several times by Webster, who is an ex-employee at Horse Shoe, according to Coal City police.

Webster, of Romeoville, was accompanied when he turned himself in by his legal counsel, Chuck Bretz of Joliet, according to a news release from Coal City police. Investigator Jason Clark of the Coal City police met with Webster at the jail, where he was read his rights.

Clark was advised by Bretz that Webster would not make any statements to law enforcement at the time.

If convicted on the attempted first-degree murder charge, Webster could be sentenced to a minimum of 31 years in jail, with a mandatory 85 percent of time served.

For the count of aggravated battery, he could get six to 30 years, also with 85 percent mandatory time served, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland has said.

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A tentative budget for fiscal 2015-16 was placed on file after Monday’s Morris City Council.

While official figures won’t go before the City Council for a vote until April 20, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said no huge projects are budgeted.

“I consider the people of Morris the shareholders in this city,” Kopczick said. “Their dividends are the city streets, protection, parks, water and sewer and so on. First and foremost, I have to make sure the shareholders’ dividends are in order.”

The tentative budget that will go in front of the board shows estimated revenue of $21.57 million, with $29.1 mil-

lion in expected expenditures.

The city historically puts forth a tentative budget that shows deficit spending. Kopczick said while the city budgets for projects that need to be completed, it doesn’t mean the project is completed that year.

“If you look at last year’s tentative budget, it projected we would have between $19 and $21 million in our cash balance at the end of the fiscal year. We are now projecting we will have $27.775 million,” Kopczick said.

Kopczick said the city has worked diligently toward maintaining roadways each year so extensive work at a large cost doesn’t come up in one year. Morris Finance Committee Chairman Bill Martin said he doesn’t have any concerns after looking over the

proposed budget.

“We’ve been fiscally responsible and living within our means for a long time,” Martin said. “We continue to save for projects. [City Clerk] Carol Adair is doing a great job putting the budget together.”

In regards to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed Local Government Distributive Fund cuts, Martin said it didn’t factor into planning, but it’s a concern going forward.

“Former Gov. [Pat] Quinn said the same thing and nothing ever happened with it,” Martin said. “I just hope he doesn’t have the support in the Senate and House. We need that money to stay on track.”

Coal City aims for alternative to alternative schools

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City Community Unit School District 1 is looking at bringing alternative classes in-district next year.

Superintendent Kent Bugg said the district sends students to Premiere Academy in Morris for computer-based learning, along with students from other county schools, including Morris and Gardner-South Wilmington. Conversely, Minooka hosts its own in-district alternative school.

Continued from page 4 upgrades to handle big rain events. The city just finished Phase 1 of the unfunded mandates at a cost of about $4 million and expects Phase 2 to cost the city about $2 million.

There will be some costs surrounding the Lisbon Road bridge replacement, although it is an Illinois Department of Transportation project.

The widening of Route 47 north of Interstate 80 also is budgeted for. Funds for the next phase of the Deer Ridge Park development are in place, and picnic tables will be added to the concession area of Morris City Pool, at a cost of about $35,000, Kopczick said.

“Plano, Oswego and Minooka have alternative schools in their district and they receive sub-grants to pay for them,” Bugg said.

He said some of the students enrolled in alternative schools are there for credit recovery to make up for failed classes.

The alternative school was created to deal with those facing suspension or expulsion.

Bugg said one of the benefits of hosting alternative school would be to have a student who only needs one credit to graduate be able to attend the needed class, since the dis-

trict doesn’t offer part-time schooling otherwise.

That would allow the student to graduate versus drop out of school.

“Kids that drop out tend to fall behind their freshman year. Our goal wouldn’t be to leave them in the alternative classes, but let them catch up and return to regular classes,” Bugg said.

He said the district has 12 to 13 students at Premiere who would benefit from an in-house alternative program.

For the Morris Police Department, Kopczick said new squad cars may be in order, and two officers will be promoted to sergeant following the retirement of two sergeants.

The city is interested in purchasing a couple plots of land, which will be brought before the City Council in the near future. No land has been chosen so cost estimates are not available.

One of the facilities would be storage for city equipment, such as plows, which have become difficult to store in existing storage area, which has become too small. Kopczick said the city continues to hope for groundbreaking on the RiverPlace Marina project sometime in 2016.

Fire officials talk about preventing harm after week with multiple fires

Fire safety tips The National Fire Protection Association offers safety tips to prevent brush, grass and forest fires: • Be aware of, and comply with, any local ordinances or permit requirements pertaining to outdoor or open-air burning. This includes campfires, brush fires, fire pits, chimneys and outdoor fireplaces. You may not be permitted to do outdoor burning in some municipalities and during some seasons.

• Closely attend all outdoor fires. Be sure to put out the fire completely before leaving.

• Avoid burning on windy, dry days. When conditions are windy or dry, it is too easy for open burning to spread out of control.

• Do not use gasoline or other flammable or combustible liquids to burn brush, trash or other waste.

The same weather that brings people outdoors after a long winter also can result in a call to the local fire protection district when controlled burns get out of hand, according to Minooka Fire Protection District Chief Al Yancey.

The Minooka Fire Protection District responded to seven fires during the first week of April: three in its fire district and four mutual aid responses for brush fires that got out of hand.

“Low humidity and wind are something people need to pay attention to,” Yancey said. “The National Weather Service provides fire weather watches, which alert people that it is not a good day to burn outside.”

He said there are several apps people can subscribe to that alert users when weather conditions are not favorable, and provide notifications about weather-related events, such as storms and tornadoes.

“You need to pay attention to conditions. A fire can erupt rapidly and become out of hand because it is windy,” Yancey said.

Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said the biggest thing to pay attention to is weather conditions, but people also need to pay attention to where they are burning.

“When burning, you should not be near a building or another person’s property,” he said.

In one call the district responded to last week, the fire spread to a pole barn and into the woods that border the property, requiring firefighters to attack multiple locations at the same time. Yancey said living in Grundy County often means living near fields and wooded areas, since subdivisions are often built in fields.

“Residents should pay attention to their surroundings,” he said.

He suggests keeping dead

vegetation out of the yard and flammable things away from structures in case a brush fire spreads.

The Coal City Fire Protection District responded to 13 fires, either in its district or as mutual aid, during the first week in April. Most were brought on by people burning brush or rubbish.

“People will start a fire and walk away or forget about it and if the weather is right it will spread,” said Lt. Nick Doerfler, public information officer with the Coal City Fire Protection District.

He said under no conditions should a fire be left unattended. Steffes recommended having a means to put out a fire on hand, whether it be a garden hose or a fire extinguisher.

While Christianity is not common in India, its roots go deep. The apostle Thomas preached and established Christian roots there in the first century, Sathuri said.

Sathuri said India’s school system is different than in the United States. Children begin school at the age of 3. By the time they are 6, they can speak three languages, know their alphabets, and can add, subtract, multiply and divide.

There are differences in Christian observances between the two countries, as well. One difference is the long prayer vigils held in his native Methodist church. They are held every second Friday beginning at 9 p.m. and last until 5:30 a.m. the next morning.

During the vigils, there is silent devotion, testimony, singing and music.

Fasting is more common in India, and Sathuri said he and

“Mother Teresa came to our town, and I was able to work with her as a young girl,” she said, “and that really moved me.”

“Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April is an opportunity to raise awareness about sexual assault and collaborate with the community to find ways to help survivors heal,” Cloonen said in a news release. “I am proud to

sponsor legislation that will give prosecutors more time to punish our state’s most heinous criminals and provide victims of sexual assault with the closure they deserve.”

Cloonen is co-sponsoring House Bill 369 to extend the statute of limitations in certain sexual assault cases.

Currently, the statute of limitations period begins at the time the crime occurs.

The proposed legislation

would require the statute of limitations period to begin after the evidence is collected and processed, ensuring that a backlog of unprocessed collection kits does not impede prosecutors’ abilities to bring perpetrators to justice.

NEIGHBORS We Care delivers over 11,000 pounds of food MORRIS DAILY HERALD MAZON – About 135 area families took part in a mobile food pantry at MVK Middle School, sponsored by New Community Christian Church.

With 11,056 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 81 pounds of food, including 37 pounds of frozen meat and various other items, including potatoes, carrots, onions, Gatorade, frozen dinners and bread, according to a news release.

“Our church family loves to serve and give. This is a great opportunity to give back,” Kevin Yandell, New Community Christian Church pastor, said in the news release. “This event always helps us to focus on what is really important: family and friends and sharing with others.”

“This was our first distribution at the MVK Middle School,” We Care’s Denise Gaska said in the release.

“We Care thanks the school for their cooperation in providing a great place to distribute in Mazon and thanks to [New Community Christian Church] for sending so many wonderful volunteers.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – If there were any questions as to how the Morris softball team would respond to a Thursday’s tough loss to Kaneland, they quickly were answered Friday.

The Redskins bounced back, scoring 12 runs in the third inning en route to a 17-2 thumping of Ottawa on a windy afternoon. Even though the wind was wreaking havoc with nearly every fly ball, it wasn’t just the wind that provided the Redskins with their runs.

Many of their 20 hits were either line drives or hard ground balls through the infield.

“We hit the ball hard all day,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “We talked about needing to come out with

the same focus we had at the start against Kaneland and maintaing it. We had it all the way through the game today.”

After Morris pitcher Ashley Phelps held Ottawa scoreless in the first, Morris threatened in its half of the inning, but didn’t score.

With one out, Jasmine Cook (3 for 3) singled, as did Janelle Brehm (3 for 4, RBI). Phelps and Leah Lines each hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning, however.

In the second, Ryan Friend (3 for 4, two RBIs) led off with a solo home run to right-center to get Morris on the board, and Melissa Benson (3 for 3, three RBIs) followed with a single.

A wild pitch sent Benson to second and, two outs later, Emily Moore (2 for 4, three RBIs) singled up the middle to score Benson for a 2-0 lead.

That was just a warmup for

the third inning.

Phelps started the inning with a single and, an out later, Friend singled to right, sending Phelps to third.

A walk to Benson loaded the bases. Amanda Jenkins (2 for 4, three RBIs) grounded to short, but Phelps was safe at home when the throw was dropped.

Taya Torkelson (1 for 4, 2 RBIs) then singled up the middle to score both Friend and Benson for a 5-0 Morris lead.

Moore then doubled to right to bring home Jenkins and Torkelson.

Cook then singled off the shortstop’s glove, putting runners on first and third, and Brehm beat out an infield single that scored Moore to make it 8-0. Phelps reached on an error that scored Cook to make it 9-0 and, after a wild pitch moved the runners up, Lines

(1 for 3, RBI) singled to center, scoring Brehm to make it 10-0.

Friend then singled to center, scoring courtesy runner Alex Kjellesvik for an 11-0 lead, and Benson singled to right to score Lines and make it 12-0.

Benson stole second, and Jenkins singled up the middle to score Friend and Benson to cap the 12-run inning and make it 14-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Brehm and pinch-hitter Alex Hardie each singled and a walk to Lines loaded the bases.

An out later, Benson, who homered in Thursday’s loss to Kaneland, just missed a grand slam when her drive to center went off the top of the fence and went for a double, scoring Brehm and Hardie.

A single off the first baseman’s glove by Jenkins scored Lines to make it 17-0.

Ottawa got a two-run ho-

mer by pinch-hitter Kimmy Johnson in the top of the fifth to provide the final score.

Phelps finished the game with five strikeouts in five innings. She allowed six hits and did not walk a batter.

“This was a big win for us after a tough loss the day before,” Lowery said. “To come back after that one says a lot about our girls and the heart they have. It’s also a big win because Ottawa is in our regional and we got to see both of their pitchers.

“Melissa Benson is hitting the ball real well right now. We worked on some things with her swing and she is seeing the ball well and just having fun up there at the plate. Ashley did a nice job on the mound.

She doesn’t walk people and lets the other team hit it. We have a good defense, and she lets them take care of things.”

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: MINOOKA 2, PLAINFIELD NORTH 0 (29-27, 25-16)

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – After graduating several talented players from a year ago, it could be understandable to think a young Minooka boys volleyball team might be in for a down season.

But this year’s squad is all too happy to prove the doubters wrong.

The Indians showed signs of its capabilities Thursday after grabbing big leads in both sets and claiming a 29-27, 25-16 Southwest Prairie Conference victory at Plainfield North.

The Tigers, (8-3, 0-2), who won their first eight matches, were hoping to avoid an 0-2 start in SPC play, but the Indians, (4-3, 2-0) pulled out a win in the opener and carried the momentum into the finale.

“I was really happy to see the boys’ performance tonight,” Indians coach Janel Grzetich said. “They’re mostly young, but a group of them did play on varsity last year as sophomores. But the difference between last year and this is that they have matured and come out of their shells since they’re playing less scared.

“Tonight, they weren’t afraid to make a mistake. And when they did, they regrouped from that. We’ve been talking about communication for a good week or so, and tonight that was key. We need to focus on what’s happening on our side of the court and keep communicating, and I thought that they did an amazing job of that.”

Although new to the setter role at the varsity level, Shane Chetney (25 assists) ran an efficient Indian attack in which Brandon Baranski (12 kills, three blocks), Danny Beaudin (six kills), Luke Hermann (four kills, two blocks) and Collin Cimaroli (four kills) all got involved to frustrate North’s defense.

“I know that I count on my players, even if it might not be one of my best sets, that they can still get it in and make a good play out of it,” Chetney said. “And when I do have a good set, they definitely capitalize on it with kills. I worked my tail off since the end of the

In the opener, the Indians jumped ahead to 8-2 and 12-6 leads, but the Tigers rallied

to pull even at 20, and neither team led by more than a point until the end of the set.

Minooka had three set points, which followed a block

“I think that we’re kind of the underdogs and everybody underestimates us, and we win two conference games,” Baranski said. “Even though

we may have lost some really good players, we’re filling those spots with young guys who are trying to get the job done. This group of guys works really hard when we condition and practice, and we also have a lot of focus. We might not be the most talented, but we work very hard, and that helps us.”

Rough patch, fans fail to discourage team

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com It was the first day of spring training when White Sox Manager Robin Ventura said he expected the Sox to make the playoffs, a reasonable proclamation considering the offseason improvements made by general manager Rick Hahn.

Four games into the season, a sizable portion of the 38,533 fans who bought into the hope and bought up tickets for Opening Day must have left U.S. Cellular Field wondering – many of them well before Adam Eaton was thrown out

at home from short left field to end a 6-0 loss – if this is a playoff team, after all. It’s not only that Sox are 0-4 and have been outscored 27-7.

This team has looked bad doing it, and it’s already reached the point where Ventura sees players pressing.

“It’s disappointing,” Ventura said. “Right now guys are probably trying, forcing everything. We haven’t done a whole lot well.

A significant groundswell

a lot from his team, more will be expected of Ventura, who is beginning his fourth season as Sox manager.

It was different, Hahn said, when Ventura didn’t have much of a bullpen to work with during a rebuilding 2014 season.

This year he has a proven closer in David Robertson, but the Sox haven’t even given him a save situation yet.

“When you have better personnel and more expectations, then it’s only fair for all of us in the organization to be judged by different standards,” Hahn said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Does anyone care about what happens in our community?

To the Editor: April 7 saw a despicably low voter turnout of less than 20 percent in Channahon.

I realize some of the races were uncontested, but some were not – including an important MCHS board race that saw five candidates running for three spots. I was certain that the recent issues haunting the MCHS board would bring voters out.

Nope. People stayed home and didn’t vote. People: You understand that over 70 percent of the school’s budget comes from your property taxes, right? You understand that the biggest chunk of your property taxes go to the school districts, right? Then why would you not vote to ensure your tax dollars are best managed? Especially given the nearly $3 million deficit the school is facing. I find this mind-boggling.

Voting is the one voice each of us has.

It takes just a few minutes, is free and directly affects you.

What is it going to take to make people in Channahon vote? Is it more marketing by the candidates? Do we need to have public debates? Or do we need to have a school system that’s $10 million in the hole before people wake up and vote?

Tell me what it’s going to take, and together we can make it happen. But under 20 percent is an embarrassment. We here in Channahon are on the verge of a great expansion. New homes are again being built, the two interchanges that lead into our community are being redone over the next two years and more industry is showing an interest in Channahon.

We must make sure those in a position to make policy and educate our children are the best possible people we can find.

This means we must engage in the political system. If we do not, we have no one to blame but ourselves for the outcome of our apathy.

Buy North American legislation would cost Illinois more than jobs The economy and our state’s fiscal health are taking center stage in Springfield as the spring legislative session ramps up to its scheduled conclusion at the end of May. One distraction that will slow that progress and should be stopped is an effort called Buy North American.

This is a recycled effort from previous General Assemblies where some unions try to tap into strong feelings of patriotism by requiring state purchases of American-assembled products.

This year, it’s in the form of House Bill 3438, which would prevent the state from buying vehicles for its fleet that are made outside the United States and Canada.

The bill has been approved by a House committee and is awaiting consideration on the House floor.

Instead of buying the Silverado at a discount when needing a rear-wheel or fourwheel drive vehicle, the Tahoe would be the next choice – costing the agency $2.5 million more to buy 150 vehicles a year.

If they cannot sell some vehicles to state government, local dealers in our communities that handle these fleet purchases will be hurt, as will the local governments that partner with the state on fleet

purchases.

HB 3438 does allow purchases of vehicles assembled in Canada, but not in Mexico – the second-highest country for Illinois exports globally at $6.4 billion a year.

Illinois ranks fifth among the 50 states for exports to Mexico and fourth in imports from our friends just south of the border.

A number of Illinois companies rely on strong relations with Mexico. But now we want to send a message to Mexico that we do not want its products?

The Mexican government and its allies are taking notice. In a letter to the leaders of the House Labor Committee on the eve of the vote on this bill, Consul General Carlos Jimenez Macias outlined his concerns that production lines developed between Mexican and Illinois companies over the past two decades

could be hurt by increased production costs and reduced competitiveness. “I sincerely hope there will be further reflection on the impact this proposed legislation will have on Illinois suppliers and what has been, to date, the very strong economic and trade ties between Illinois and Mexico,” he wrote.

The Buy North American bill doesn’t work for Illinois taxpayers, workers, small businesses and trade and economic relations with a major Illinois international partner.

We urge lawmakers to reject HB 3438 and focus on the right priorities for Illinois’ turnaround.

Mom threatens to fight son’s silence with silence of her own Dear Abby: My 34-year-old, single, independent son completely ignores me. He won’t answer texts, emails, postal mail or phone calls. Weeks and months go by with no meaningful conversation between us.

I am sick of it, and tired of being treated so disrespectfully. I thought I had raised my son to be more thoughtful of others, especially his mother.

Dear Abby: My daughter just got engaged and is beginning to plan her wedding. Her fiance has been married before, but she hasn’t. She wants a band at the reception and he wants a D.J. (which he had at his first wedding). My husband is paying for the entire affair, and he and I support our daughter in this.

I know this seems like a small thing, but her fiance is really digging in his heels.

Would it be wrong for her to pull the “this is my one and only wedding” card? This fight seems ridiculous to us. What do you think? – Parents of the

Dear Parents: I’m glad you asked. I think that if your daughter goes that route, it may not be her one and only wedding. And I urge you and your husband to stay out of it and let the two lovebirds resolve this for themselves.

Dear Abby: My wife and I are retired, so we both contribute to household chores. There are no rules as to who does what, but somehow everything gets done.

The disagreement we’re having relates to laundry.

When I do it, the last steps are: Remove the clothes from the dryer, place them on top, then sort, fold and put away.

My wife claims that taking the clothes out of the dryer and placing them on top creates

wrinkles, and what I really need to do is take one item out of the dryer, fold it, and then repeat until the dryer is empty, sorting as I go. I maintain that this does not seem logical.

There is no data to back her claim, and all it does is make extra work for me. I would appreciate your thoughts. – Fluff

This week’s deals have had a common theme, which will now be revealed -- and it will definitely not seem inevitable. In each column, South has been in four of a major. Five times, declarer had to play carefully to succeed, and one time he had no chance against best defense. But in all of the layouts, three no-trump would have been either laydown or less taxing. However, when we find a major-suit fit, we typically go for that strain. When to prefer no-trump is very difficult to ascertain.

In today’s deal, how should South play in four spades after West leads a low diamond?

In the bidding, North was right to make a takeout double, despite the lack of a fourth spade. South’s twoheart cue-bid was purely point-showing, announcing at least 12. He could have had any hand distribution.

North bid the first four-card suit he reached as he mounted the bidding ladder. South jumped to four spades to confirm at least a five-card suit and extra values.

West found the best lead, the diamond three. The bidding marked West with the spade king, heart ace-queen and diamond king. So South had to make sure that East could not gain the lead for a heart shift. Declarer won with dummy’s diamond queen, then ran the spade queen. West took the trick and led a second diamond, but South won with dummy’s ace, drew trumps, and cashed the clubs to take 10 tricks: four spades, two diamonds and four clubs. ******
