DIAMOND – Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies arrested this week two local people on felony drug charges.

About 8:49 p.m. Tuesday, Zachary T. Esler, 22, of Diamond and Sarah E. Olson, 19, of Coal City were arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent

to deliver, possession of hypodermic syringes or needles and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop in the area of Division Street and Will Road in Diamond, according to a news release from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department.

A sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop on a 2002 Honda Civic for traffic violations and

spoke with Esler, the driver, and Olson, a front-seat passenger. Further investigation lead to the discovery of 26 bags of heroin, and a 1 gram bag containing two unidentified pills, police said.

Numerous syringes, empty gram bags containing the residue of suspected heroin, marijuana drug paraphernalia and several other items indicative

of drug use also were found throughout the vehicle, according to the news release.

Both Esler and Olson were arrested and taken to the Grundy County Jail, where they remain. On Wednesday, Esler and Olson appeared in front of Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson. Bond was set at $40,000 for Esler and $25,000 for Olson.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Ben Hamilton; her son and daughterin-law, Roger and Janet Carlson; a brother, Raymond Watts; and two infant grandchildren.

Laura was affiliated with the Dwight United Methodist Church.

She graduated from Dwight Township High School in 1931. She worked as a CNA for the V.A. Hospital in Dwight and Hines Hospital in Hines, Illinois. She also worked at Joliet Arsenal as an inspector during WWII and the Korean War. Laura loved to paint figurines, was an accomplished seamstress, knitted many sweaters, loved to crochet Afghans and worked on cross word puzzles. She also loved to play bridge and euchre.

She volunteered at the nursing home and helped with Comforters INC at St. Peter’s Lutheran

Church. She belonged to the Campus Bridge Club, and was an original player for over 50 years.

Born: August 9, 1913; in Ottawa, IL Died: April 8, 2015; in Dwight, IL Laura B. Carlson, age 101, of Dwight, passed away peacefully at her home on April 8, 2015.

Visitation will take place at Dwight United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 11, 2015, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. There will be a service immediately following visitation.

Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Emington, IL. Laura was born on August 9, 1913, in Ottawa, Illinois, to Warren Watts and Inez Knox.

Considering Minooka and South Carolina as locations

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Grainger is looking to expand its company and its Minooka location is one of the prospect locations for expansion.

Nancy Ammer, CEO with the Grundy Economic Development Council, said staff have met with Grainger to see the expansion plan and she is excited at the idea of the company expanding in Minooka.

“Grainger is at the top.

They pay the best wages by far and have the best benefits on the Minooka Road corridor,” Ammer told the Grundy County Board’s Economic Development Committee Wednesday.

According to Donald Hansen, director of real estate and development for Grainger and who attended the committee meeting, the Minooka location is competing with a proposed expansion in South Carolina.

Grainger is seeking a fouryear, 50 percent tax rebate incentive for the proposed 1 million-square-foot expansion. The committee approved a recommendation in favor of the rebate for the full Grundy County Board to consider for next week.

The property which Grainger owns is located within a Grundy County Economic Development Project Area boundary on 52 acres Grainger purchased from Lib-

erty Property Trust next to the current facility on Minooka Road.

The rebate acts as an incentive to encourage companies to build within Grundy County.

The rebate – in conjunction with other tools – also helps lessen the impact of the county’s machinery and equipment tax, which taxes machinery as real property.

The state’s other 101 counties classify machinery as personal property, which is not taxed in Illinois.

The rebate is offered to companies starting a new project or expanding existing businesses.

Eligible companies can receive an abatement on their property taxes of up to 50 percent for three to five years.

Agreements are negotiated with the company, which can include a three-year rebate that has a 75-percent rebate the first year, 50 percent the second year and 25 percent the third year, or in Grainger’s instance a four-year 50-percent rebate each year.

Ammer said the offer to companies is based on each one’s score, which the GEDC figures using information such as quantity of jobs, quality of jobs, investment into the community, health insurance, and whether or not they own the property among other items.

Requirements for the tax rebate program include hiring at least 50 percent of workers from the taxing district and having a development worth at least $500,000.

The current taxes collected on the property for 2013 were $1,445, the estimated taxes at the end of abatement would be between $650,000 and $800,000 pending final building design and assessment.

Hansen presented the Phase 2 project to the committee, explaining what Grainger currently does in the existing building and what it plans to do with the new building.

“We have 26 locations in Illinois, with Minooka being

the largest,” he said. “We are a fulfillment center that employs 457 people, with 98 from Grundy County.”

He told the board the large number of employees who are not from the county were mainly transferred down from the Niles location when the facility moved to Minooka.

The new building will be between 1 million to 1.3 million square feet and will add at least 130 local employees.

He said the company has existing constraints within the four walls making the expansion necessary for company growth.

The project has a proposed capital investment of $50 million, and has a targeted commencement date of 2016, with

completion and operational targeted for 2018.

Ammer said Thursday that Minooka Road is developing with good companies and the addition of a second Grainger building would give a boost to the region.

“It not only adds to the tax base but the people who are employed there are the people buying homes in our county, shopping in our county, and stopping at gas stations on their way to and from work,” Ammer said.

Other taxing bodies – including Minooka Grade School District, the village of Minooka, and Minooka Fire Protection District – were on hand at the meeting and said they support the incentive.

The board voted 5 to 0 during its board meeting Wednesday with members Shawn Hamilton absent and Chuck Lander abstaining.

“The preschool will meet in the afternoon and will be

blended between at-risk students and special-needs students,” Sandy Rakes, director of special populations, said Thursday.

The program will house 14 of the 31 students on the waiting list for next year’s preschool program.

The board discussed last month the possibility of offering a tuition-based program, but the board decided to hold the pilot program at no cost to the families.

Rakes said the class will have one teacher and two aides to adequately provide services for the program’s students.

For the past several years, the district had students who qualified but remained on the waiting list for the entire school year. Rakes said she feels these students who have

A new day care center operated by former residents John and Michelle Ginley will open in its place soon.

Gene Briscoe, the landlord of the office complex at 101 W. Wapella St., is giving the new center $5,000 to help subsidize child care for some of those parents.

“I gave them a check to use at their discretion,” Briscoe said, adding that he wants the money to go to as many families as possible. “I felt in that point in time I should help those individuals with children who need to get the education to better themselves.”

The new day care center, Discovery Child Care & Learning Center Inc., will be the Ginleys’ second child care center after Bright Start Child Care Inc. in Naperville.

It’s a tough economic climate to run a day care center, let alone open up a new one, Briscoe said, adding that he has financially helped out several day care providers that also have occupied the space for the past 12 years.

can we do to help this town, help these people?’ ” John Ginley said. “But with the subsidy situation with the state, it’s tough to make payroll. We’re still waiting for money promised from two months ago.”

Ginley also said he and Michelle have come full circle after plans to start their first day care center in Minooka didn’t pan out.

Gov. Bruce Rauner recently signed a short-term budget fix negotiated with the Illinois Legislature.

But earlier cuts already have closed down several child care centers across the state that heavily rely on state subsidies.

“We’re losing a third of our state subsidy,” Ginley said.

While being a new, separate operation from the Naperville center, Discovery also will feature free registration, Spanish enrichment, and parental Web supervision

that allows parents to watch their children play wherever they have Internet access.

It also is using Briscoe’s donation to offer a free week of child care to parents affected by the Royal Child Care closing.

Operating a child care center in Minooka costs less than in Naperville, Ginley said.

That includes teacher salaries, building rent and overhead costs. But the subsidies also are lower.

According to payment rates effective through last year, subsidy payments for a child under the age of 2 in a full day of a DuPage County licensed day care center was $46.49.

In Grundy County, that subsidy was $33.53.

The center is offering discounted pre-opening rates.

Softball, baseball drop one-run decisions

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With inclement weather forecast for Thursday, the athletic complex at Morris Community High School was an island of activity in a sea of cancellations.

Unfortunately for both the Redskin softball and baseball teams, they might have wanted to take the day off as well, as both suffered one-run losses.

The softball team saw a 6-2 lead evaporate in the sixth inning against Kaneland as Morris dropped its Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener to the Knights, 8-7. Neither team did much offensively through the first two innings, as only one batter reached base between both clubs.

That changed quickly in the bottom of the third, however. Morris’ Melissa Benson led off for Morris and drilled a 1-0 pitch over the scoreboard beyond the left field fence for a home run and 1-0 Redskin lead. Amanda Jenkins followed with a double to the right-center field gap and scored when a ball hit by Taya Torkelson was dropped in right field to make it 2-0.

An out later, Jasmine Cook singled to put runners on first and third, and Janelle Brehm hit the first pitch she saw over the fence in left-center for a three-run homer and a 5-0 Morris lead.

“We did well early,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said.

Kaneland struck back hard in the top of the sixth. The first two batters, Rachel Goress and Sikor, walked and a wild pitch moved them to second and third. “We had the one bad inning,” Lowery said. “We lost our focus. We talked about that before the game, and we came out with good focus, but we lost it. We have to have it for the whole game.”

Morris, which hosts Ottawa today at 4:30 p.m., scored in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Jenkins was hit by a pitch and went to second on an error on a ball hit by Torkelson.

An infield single by Moore loaded the bases, and Cook grounded to second to score Jenkins, with Moore being forced out at second. Brehm then lined a shot up the middle, but the ball went off the pitcher’s glove and the Kaneland shortstop caught it before it hit the ground for the third out.

“An inch or two either way and that ball’s through and we tie the game,” Lowery said.

“But, that’s the way it goes sometimes. I thought overall, we played pretty well. We made some untimely mistakes and they got some timely hits.

That’s not a good combination.

“Yes, we have a young team, but there comes a time when you aren’t young any more. We have to maintain that focus throughout a whole game. We hope to learn that from this game and move on.”

On the baseball field, Morris dropped a 2-1 nonconference decision to Herscher in eight innings. Matt Walker was the hard-luck loser on the mound, going the distance. He allowed just one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Redskins (7-4-1) scored their lone run in the bottom of the third. Emmett Chouinard was hit by a pitch and Tyler Bordner walked. Tom Cheshareck then singled in Chouinard. Walker led off the bottom of the first with a double, but was stranded at third.

Other hits for the Redskins, who host Geneseo on Saturday at 11 a.m., came from Jake McDonald and Kendall Enger.

“Matt threw very well,” Morris coach Todd Kein said.

“It was probably his best game of the year. All we ask out of our starting pitchers is to put us in a position to win, and he certainly did that.

“We had some missed opportunities to score and, against a good team like Herscher, you have to capitalize on those.”

The ice is gone, the willingness is there, but the fish sometimes fail to cooperate. Everyone talks about waiting until the temperature inches up a few more degrees. Then it will get good they say. This is partly true. But, there are places where you can fish right now that will feed your need to set the hook: rivers. River fish are much more predictable and stable. The water temperatures in rivers usually are further

ahead than lakes this time of year, especially crystal-clear lakes. The dirtier and shallower river waters warm up faster and move along the onset of the spawn. Last spring, in the lake I live on, I watched fish come shallow to start fanning out beds. Then a severe cold front settled in and drove them back to deeper water. A few days later they tried again, only to be repulsed by Mother Nature for second, third and fourth times.

These lake dwellers felt the full wrath of inconsistent temperatures. The consistent current that river fish live in help to stabilize those drastic swings of the thermometer. Just last week a friend and I hit one of our local rivers for an afternoon. We didn’t whack 'em as far as numbers are concerned, but we sure caught quality. We topped out at a smallmouth that

We have several nice rivers in our area that anglers can venture into. Some are better than others, but they all hold quality fish of different species. Some of the smaller rivers might be hard to access because of all the private property surrounding them, but more and more communities around us are building canoe and kayak ramps that allow for smaller craft to launch in our river systems. A simple Google search can locate many such access points in and around

Chicagoland.

Yes, I love to fish from the giant casting deck of a sleek boat just as much as the next guy, but if you are itching for a good bite now, then hopping aboard a smaller vessel and attacking some skinny water may be just the ticket to satisfying that urge to rear back and land a good one. It can take some time to learn a river and you must be patient with it. Look for effective current breaks and places where shallow water dips into deeper holes. Find eddies and pools that have multiple current swings in them. Locate some good timber or rocks and cast upstream.

Natural presentations moving along with the current are key.

These feisty fish will be facing upstream looking for an easy meal to float right past them.

Give them what they want.

Boat positioning in a river system is critical, especially if you are floating along with the current. The water will constantly try to push you into areas that fish might be holding in. It is easy to spook them.

Try and foresee where the currents are taking you and do your best to maneuver your craft so you don’t startle the fish in the area you want to target. If you do scare them, just anchor downstream and wait for things to settle out. Then cast upriver and present your offerings. We all are anxious to land good fish now. While we wait for our favorite lakes to “get hot,” try some of our rivers and prepare yourself for some quality fishing. Go get 'em.

After beating Plano by that score on Tuesday, the Redskins downed coach Todd Kein’s alma mater, Ottawa on Wednesday. After election, remember the public To those who came up short in Tuesday’s election, thank you for being willing to serve and putting your name before the voters. We hope that if circumstances are right in the future, you will try again. Voters benefit from having options; communities benefit when there are multiple people on the ballot putting forth ideas.

Congratulations to those candidates who received enough votes to win. Whether you have been elected for the first time or have won a new term, whether you faced an opponent or not, once your new term begins you will be holders of the public’s trust.

We ask that once you take office, you do not forget how you came to hold it – through a public vote.

Those who serve on boards and councils of public entities sometimes forget that their responsibility is to those who cast the ballots and pay the taxes.

Those who do often decide to err on the side of secrecy rather than openness. They prefer to make decisions out of public view. They serve their own agendas, rath-

er than those that most benefit the citizens whom they serve.

Winning this election has not made you members of a private club. Only in rare circumstances should secrets be kept from the public. They’ve chosen you to serve on their behalf, but they still have the right to understand what their government is doing, and to be heard when they disagree with its course.

Few in public life succeed in pleasing everyone all the time. That’s OK. Those who are open, honest, and willing to listen to others’ point of view can earn the respect even of those with whom they disagree.

In the end, the governments that those who were elected on Tuesday will help to run are local governments – they’re funded by and exist to serve them and their neighbors. The decisions made by those who were elected Tuesday will affect their neighbors. We wish all those who were elected – and all the write-in candidates yet to learn if they have been elected – good luck in their coming terms of office.

Year 27, monsignor’s debate with gray lady Monsignor Daniel S. Hamilton recognizes a source of doctrinal authority when he sees one – which is why he pays such close attention to The New York Times.

The 83-year-old priest often feels the urge to respond to the Gray Lady and, rather than limiting himself to sermons from a pulpit, he keeps pounding out letters to the editor – about 330 since his first on July 19, 1961.

“I am a citizen, I am a Christian, I am a Catholic and I am a priest,” said Hamilton, who is pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lindenhurst, New York. These letters are part of “defending the faith in our day and age. You have to keep saying that there is a profound moral and ethical angle to all of life and certainly to the stories and editorials printed in the Times.”

While he frequently disagrees with the Times, the monsignor said it’s crucial for the church to take journalism seriously. The bottom line: Hamilton believes more clergy should demonstrate their respect for journalists by reading their work carefully and then arguing with them – on the record.

To which I say, “Amen.” As of this week, I have been writing this syndicated “On Religion” column for 27 years, and I have heard from many angry professionals on both sides of the tense wall between church and Fourth Estate. This was especially true when I taught in a seminary in Denver, before I began teaching journalism in Christian colleges. We urgently need dialogue.

Tragically, it appears these tensions are getting worse, creating a giant, two-sided blind spot inside the First

Consider that recent Times column by Frank Bruni entitled, “Bigotry, the Bible and the Lessons of Indiana.” He stressed that it’s time for traditional faiths to change their doctrines and that they “must be made” to do so. “Homosexuality and Christianity don’t have to be in conflict in any church anywhere,” argued Bruni. “That many Christians regard them as incompatible is understandable, an example not so much of hatred’s pull as of tradition’s sway. ... But in the end, the continued view of gays, lesbians and bisexuals as sinners is a decision. It’s a choice. It prioritizes scattered passages of ancient texts over all that has been learned since

– as if time had stood still, as if the advances of science and knowledge meant nothing.”

For Hamilton, this demonstrates the “relativist” worldview he describes in his book, “Jousting With The New York Times 1961-2014: Worldviews in Radical Conflict.” While the editors appear to believe that there is “good religion” as well as “bad religion,” he said, the key is that they attack those who defend “absolute, transcendent” doctrines about moral issues.

Meanwhile, he said, these same editors often seem to endorse, and even praise, some absolutes. In a Sept. 22, 1980, letter he noted: “What would you say if the issue, instead of ‘abortion rights,’ were slavery rights, segregation rights, euthanasia rights, sterilization-of-the-weak rights or genocide-of-the-Jews rights?

candidate is supporting any such enormity or the funding thereof! At the moment, no; in the past, yes.”

In an unpublished Feb. 19, 1993, letter, the monsignor noted: “Acclaimed as moral prophets when they declare Church teachings on, and actively campaign against, racism, anti-Semitism and social and economic injustice, Catholic clergy are severely criticized [by some] as ‘politickers’ and ‘lobbyists’ when they declare Church teaching on, and actively resist, policies that promote abortion, fornication and homosexual activity.”

A bridge contract is a unit composed not only of tricks but also bidding, declarer play, defense, winners and losers. In today’s deal, South is in four spades. What happens after West leads the spade king?

Note that North might raise one heart to two hearts with only threecard support. If he has a minimum opening with 1-3-5-4 distribution, a rebid of two hearts is preferable to two clubs. So South’s jump to four hearts promises at least a five-card suit. With only four hearts, he should make a different rebid, perhaps three no-trump with stoppers in the unbid suits, or in one of the other three suits.

South must first count his losers.

Here, he has four: two spades, one heart and one club. Then, if he can do it in a reasonable length of time -five or 10 minutes! -- he should also count winners. He can see 11: one spade, four hearts, four diamonds and two clubs. So, declarer can make his contract as long as he does not lose those four tricks first.

Since he cannot avoid losing tricks to the rounded-suit aces, he must eliminate a spade loser.

Before leading a trump, South must play a diamond to his queen, overtake the diamond jack with dummy’s king, and discard a spade on the diamond ace. Now, with his loser count down to three, he should draw trumps as quickly as possible.

Various treatments can improve appearance of rosacea Dear Dr. K: I have rosacea, and it makes me very self-conscious. What can I do to make it less noticeable?

Dear Reader: Rosacea is a common, long-lasting skin condition that causes inflammation and redness of the face. (I’ve put a photo of skin affected by rosacea on my website, askdoctork.com.)

As with many diseases, we don’t know what causes rosacea. People with the condition are more likely to have high levels of certain natural inflammatory chemicals in their skin. There also is evidence tiny little insects (dust mites) and a particular type of bacteria living on the skin can trigger rosacea.

Rosacea usually progresses through four stages. In the first stage, a person has

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff flushing and occasional facial redness. In the second stage, there is persistent redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. By the third stage, small, pus-colored or red bumps appear on the face, along with tiny blood vessels that appear as thin, red lines.

In the fourth stage, knobby bumps appear on the nose and the skin on the nose may thicken. Symptoms commonly come and go in cycles.

The good news is that treatments can improve the appearance of rosacea. They may even stop, or reverse, its progress. Depending on

your specific symptoms, your doctor may prescribe: • Antibiotics. Topical antibiotics, which are applied directly to the skin, are usually prescribed first. You also may be prescribed antibiotics to take by mouth.

• Azelaic Acid (Finacea). This gel containing dicarboxylic acid is applied directly to the face. It is used to treat the inflammatory pimples of mild to moderate rosacea.

• Beta Blockers and Alpha Antagonists. These medications may reduce flushing through their effect on blood vessels.

• Estrogen. This female hormone is used when rosacea is aggravated by the hot flashes of menopause, since estrogen treatment reduces the number and severity of hot flashes.

• Laser Treatment. This is used to get rid of dilated blood vessels or to remove excess nose tissue.

• Surgical Procedures.

Surgical shave techniques or skin resurfacing procedures can help remove excess nose tissue.

You can also help control symptoms by recognizing and avoiding things that make your condition worse.

Common triggers include hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, stress, sunlight and extreme heat or cold. These triggers increase blood flow and cause the small blood vessels in the face to dilate.

Also, select facial cleansers and moisturizers that do not burn, sting, irritate or cause redness when you apply them.

Wash your face with luke-

warm water and a mild soap.

Avoid toners, astringents, scrubs, exfoliating agents and products containing alcohol or acetone.

Hydroxy acids and tretinoin (for example, Retin-A) are very helpful for other skin conditions, but can worsen rosacea.

Finally, use sunscreens and sun blockers regularly and liberally to protect your face.

While rosacea is not a “serious” condition, the embarrassment it causes some people can affect their lives.

Fortunately, effective treatments are readily available.
