Bruce F. G. Kursell, passed away suddenly, Sunday, March 29, 2015, age 76 years.

Survived by his loving wife of 53 years Barbara M. Kursell (nee Probeck); three children, Laura Andrews, Wendy Kursell-Casey and Steven (Cherie) Kursell.

Nine grandchildren, Spencer (Sara Johnson-fiance’) Andrews, Natalie (Chris) Carpenter, Nicole Andrews, Dylan and Aaron Casey, Niels, Torin, Zachary and Claire Kursell. Two brothers, Edwin (Joyce) Kursell and Dennis (Donna) Kursell. His two cousins, Richard (Pat) Kursell and William (MaryEllen) Kursell. Also several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Sture E.A. (1940) and Norma M. (2015) Kursell; father-in-law, Charles J. (2002); his motherin-law, Edna L. Probeck (2014); uncle, Carl W. Kursell (1982); and aunt, Evelyn Kursell (2000).

Bruce was born May 6, 1938 in Joliet. He graduated from Joliet Township High School Class of 1956. Graduate of University of Illinois College of Pharmacy.

He began his career at Joliet Prescription Shops and retired in 2013 from Doc’s Drugs - Coal City and Dwight. He was beloved for his dedication and impeccable customer care. Lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

2014 Backbone Award recipient for his dedication and service to the Joliet American Legion band.

Bruce played clarinet with the American Legion Band and the Joliet Junior College Community Band.

Lying in state at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 412 E. Benton St., Friday, April 3rd from 9:30 a.m. until services at 10:00 a.m.

Interment Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.

In lieu of flowers memorials to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church will be appreciated.

Born: Dec. 4, 1916; in Kansas City, MO Died: March 27, 2015; in Morris, IL Marjorie L. Wilds-McIntyre (nee Bischoff), age 98, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2015, at Regency Care of Morris.

Born in Kansas City, MO on December 4, 1916, to the late George F. and Ada B. (nee Wagaman) Bischoff. Formerly a resident of Kansas City, MO and Tarpon Springs, FL, and has resided in Morris since 2002.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Frank (Jennifer) Wilds; stepson, Lawrence (Shirley) Wilds; grandson, Alan (Sandra) Wilds; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Devin and Katrina; sister-in-law, Bettie Bischoff; nephews, Geb Bischoff and Robert (Kathie) Houston; great-nieces and nephews, Carley, Caroline, Josh, Michael and Nicole and “English stepdaughter” Linda Jordan Torres. Preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Wilds; her second husband, Hans McIntyre; sister, Betty (William) Houston; brother, George Bischoff; and niece, Julie Langlois.

As it was her final wish, cremations rites have been accorded.

booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on a charge of possession of cannabis, 2.5 to 10 grams, and on a Will County warrant for domestic battery.

• Joshua D. Cortez, 21, of Verona, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs. He also was cited for improper lane usage and having no valid driver’s license.

Play Thursday will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – An actor’s job is portraying a part with the right emotion and the right body language to be believable. Having a nonspeaking role makes that job even harder.

Zac Mitchell, who is portraying Jesus in First Presbyterian Church of Morris’ production of “The Last Words”

“The whole feel of the play, the sorrow and the ominous feeling, helps me play the role,” said Mitchell, of Morris.

“I think about my sins and my struggles, and knowing he can forgive, that is where I draw my emotion.”

As 19-year-old Mitchell hangs on a cross, other actors portray people from the Bible who had interactions with Jesus throughout his life, such as his mother Mary, Joseph of Arimathea, the Samaritan woman from the well and a centurion.

Mitchell, who doesn’t have a speaking part, is the main character who portrays the anguish of Jesus as he hangs on the cross, then dies, completely by facial expression and movements of his head.

Cheryl Roth of Morris, who helps produce the production, said the church puts on the performance to remind attendees of what Easter is really about.

“We like to do this for our community,” Roth said. “It gets us all attuned to Easter.”

Pastor Jeri Baker said the church wants the community to remember the cost of their salvation, and so everyone in the community is invited, not just those who attend First Presbyterian Church.

Chris Foster of Newark – who plays Mary, Jesus’ mother – said she draws from the dramas she watched growing up to play her role.

“Once the play really gets started it gets so emotional,” she said. “The whole crucifixion story is something we need to be reminded of.”

It isn’t just the words or the actions of the actors that bring a range of emotions to the stage. The play takes viewers from darkness to a bright light as each actor walks into view to recite how Jesus affected his or her life.

Christ is sometimes dimly lit, and other times, as he portrays each agonizing moment between speakers, he is brightly lit with a golden hue.

As Mitchell is removed from the cross it becomes back-lit with red to signify the blood of Jesus.

Roth said they’ve made minor changes to the play this year including the ending, which she thinks will add to the dramatic feel of the entire play.

LOCAL NEWS Committee talks adding policy on removal of county chairman Topic initated by current chairman

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Board’s Legislative Committee has been looking over policy to recommend changes to the current policy list.

One item discussed during Tuesday’s meeting, and that will go in front of the entire County Board for a final vote, is adding language that will allow the removal of the County Board chairman by vote of the other members.

“If the board has the authority to appoint a chairman, they should have the authority to remove one,” Board Chairman David Welter said.

Committee Chairwoman Deb Warning said the topic had nothing to do with the removal of current board chairman Welter, but that Welter had brought up that there was no policy in place and he would like to see it added. The committee has added verbiage to the policy that states the chairman can be removed by a two-thirds vote of the entire board.

When creating the new poli-

cy, it was unclear if they would need to create a resolution or if they could just add it to the policy.

“A resolution can wait, but the rules stand,” Warning said.

“I do want to point out that the rule says not all present, but all board members.”

A resolution had been drawn up by Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman, but a resolution is not required for the new language. Rudman had to leave the committee meeting before discussion of the resolution.

Although they did not approve a resolution, the committee members said they would like to see the wording used in the resolution added to the policy so there would be rules in place on how the board could remove a chairman.

Committee member Harold Vota said he agreed the rules should be black and white.

The resolution included statements of how the removal of a County Board chairman would be resolved.

The board would have the power to remove it’s elected chairman during the term of seating by a motion for removal made either orally or in writing during the new business portion of the agenda of a regular board meeting.

If the motion receives a second, a special meeting of the County Board would be scheduled not more than 14 days after the motion was made. The special meeting would be for the sole purpose of deciding the issue of removal.

The vice-chairman of the board would preside at the special meeting for considering the motion and it would require at least two-thirds of all members to pass.

In the event of a removal the chairman, compensation would be prorated to the date of the removal and the vice-chairman would immediately assume the duties, without chairman compensation, until a new chairman was elected at the next regular board meeting.

The chairman who was removed would retain their seat on the County Board.

Making healthy choices at restaurants Hospital removes guessing at ‘Dining with Diabetes’ exhibit

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – Diabetics last week sampled a mini-smorgasbord of healthful, low-carbohydrate restaurant food at Morris Hospital’s “Dining with Diabetes Fair and Exhibit.”

Hospital dietitians handpicked selections from several Morris restaurant menus.

These included sandwiches, chicken dishes, cookies and muffins.

The idea was to help those with diabetes or pre-diabetes figure out what to order when dining out.

“What to order when I go out to eat?” is a common question patients ask, Mangan said. Once they know the answer, they can eat just about anywhere.

“Every place you go,” Mangan said, “there will be something on the menu that is healthier than the other choices.”

That might even include sugar-free syrup, although patrons might have to ask for it, Mangan said, which is worth it.

Mangan said long-term consequences of improperly managed diabetes include heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease and nerve damage.

The good news is that a diabetic-friendly diet also is a hearthealthy diet.

“What you eat is going to impact you,” Mangan said, “and much more so if you have diabetes.”

Fire comes close to mobile homes, but does not catch

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – Patty Jones emerged from her home Tuesday clutching her two cats closely as fire spread from the corn field behind her Dwight mobile home over the railroad tracks and into her backyard.

As she hurried her pets to safety she shouted there was one more cat inside.

Her neighbor of seven years, Keith Krch, stood in the backyard with a garden hose trying to keep the fire at bay until firefighters could arrive.

When a fire broke out in the fields behind the Creek Ridge mobile home park Tuesday afternoon, Jones went to let Krch know what was going on outside. The two then watched as firefighters from Dwight,

Gardner, Morris, Odell and Emington battled the blaze that swiftly crossed the barren corn field between their homes and the RR Donnelley plant.

“I’ve been through a couple of fires,” Jones said after the blaze was extinguished. “The cats are very important to me, those are my babies.”

Krch said he tried to battle the fire because he didn’t want to see his neighbor lose her shed or her home.

Mitchell Nettleingham, an engineer with Dwight Fire Department, said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

“We were called to the scene at 12:24 p.m. with the report that there was a 5-acre brush fire,” he said. “The strong winds caused the corn stubble in the field to spread quickly.”

MORRIS – Craig Patnode rode his Nashbar 5000 bicycle through gravel roads and paved streets as a child in Morris.

He’s lived in Chicago for about 20 years, but his affinity for biking never subsided. After competing in Michigan races such as the Barry-Roubaix Killer Gravel Road Race, he realized about 30 of the top 50 finishers were from Wisconsin and the greater Chicago area.

Recognizing an open market for a gravel-road bike race closer to Chicago, Patnode launched the first “Rough Road 100,” as a partner in Ignite Events, based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The race starts at 8 a.m. April 11 in downtown Morris.

“The course is modeled after spring classics, which have risen in popularity the last seven to 10 years,” Patnode said.

“I would have liked to reach 80 percent gravel, but we’re at about 60 percent. Some of the roads from my childhood aren’t gravel anymore.”

The course will stretch 100 kilometers, or about 62 miles.

The starting point is at the intersection of Washington and Liberty streets. The course then takes riders toward Verona, west toward Grand Ridge, before heading north to Marseilles, Seneca, and back to Morris. Bikers can load the course into their bicycle’s GPS. Patnode said most long-distance competitors have GPS devices for their bikes, but signs will be posted at turns and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department will direct bikers at major intersections.

As of Tuesday, Patnode said the race had close to 100 registered participants. He hopes to double the total by race day, when Big Shoulders Coffee will be on hand pre- and post-race, and Goose Island Beer will be flowing at the finish line. Patnode hopes this is only the beginning.

“The first person who reg-

istered is from Champaign,” Patnode said. “We have participants from places like Indianapolis, Carbondale and Chicago. It’s been great feedback from the start and I hope it grows each year.”

Patnode chose We Care of Grundy County as a beneficiary of the event. “This partnership is exciting for We Care,” said Executive Director Denise Gaska. “It’s new and different for Grundy County. No one is

doing an event like this here.”

Gaska said there’s a nice tie-in for We Care in that the course touches different parts of the county, as We Care aims to do with its efforts.

“Denise told me $5 can feed a family of four for three days,” Patnode said. “Canned donations are nice, but monetary donations go farther.”

Donations to We Care are accepted separate from the registration price. So far, Patnode said donations have totaled about $300, and Patnode plans to donate 10 percent of a potential profit to We Care. “Being that it’s the first year for our race we hope to break even,

she went to the emergency room, where Heifner learned her blood glucose levels were dangerously high.

After medical staff brought Heifner’s levels down, they sent her home, and Heifner began reducing her weight and her glucose levels.

Heifner said eating out had contributed to her weight gain.

You should have a somewhat stiff dough. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface.

Dust hands lightly with flour; shape dough into a ball. Flatten slightly then knead several minutes until smooth and elastic; it should bounce back when gently pressed with a finger.

3. While dough rests, line a 13-by9-inch baking pan with two pieces of aluminum foil, one crosswise, one lengthwise; leave ends loose to make removing the baked rolls from pan easier. Brush foil well with some of the melted butter. Prepare a filling.

4. Pat down dough; roll into a 12-by-18-inch rectangle. Brush lightly with melted butter. Sprinkle or spread with filling of your choice, leaving a 1⁄2-inch space along the edges. Starting from long side nearest you, roll dough up tightly; pinch long seam closed. Cut roll into 1 1⁄2-inch slices using a sharp knife.

Or use a 12-inch piece of sturdy thread to cut slices: Place thread under roll at a 1 1⁄2-inch mark. Pick up thread ends — thread on the right with your left hand, thread on the left with your right hand — and pull thread ends across roll to cut. You

should have 12 rolls. Arrange cut rolls in prepared baking pan, leaving space between them. Brush tops with remaining melted butter. Cover pan with plastic wrap; refrigerate overnight.

5. Remove rolls from refrigerator; carefully remove plastic wrap. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Let rolls stand at room temperature, 15-20 minutes.

(Do not let them get too puffy before baking.) Bake until tops are nicely browned, 25-30 minutes. Cool in pan on a rack, 5 minutes. Use ends of foil as handles to remove rolls from pan.

Remove rolls from the foil, with help from a spatula. Place on a serving tray; cool, 10 minutes. Drizzle with icing before serving.

OPINION Right-to-work zones the next Overton Window?

SPRINGFIELD – What is the Overton Window?

It’s a political theory that there are a range of ideas the public will accept. An idea’s political sustainability depends mainly on whether it falls within that window rather than on politicians’ individual preferences.

I‘m reticent to write about social issues, but a good example is same-sex marriage.

Please note I’m not endorsing or condemning. I’m using it as an example of how the Overton Window works.

When I first started covering politics, 30 years ago the concept was unthinkable for a mainstream politician to support.

About 15 years ago, when he was running for the Democratic nomination for governor, Paul Vallas told me he supported gay marriage.

Shortly after telling me that, an aide called me and said Vallas was backing off the statement.

The idea was too radical back then.

Later, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage and the idea became acceptable for the public to discuss.

It now is legal in 37 states, including Illinois.

And, last year, Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Vallas, along with his running mate then-Gov. Pat Quinn, ran a platform of touting gay marriage legislation as a major accomplishment of the Quinn administration.

It’s an example of how, in the Overton Window model, an idea can move from unthinkable to radical to acceptable to policy.

Five years ago, it would have been unthinkable for an Illinois governor to support a law prohibiting workers from

A year ago, Dan Rutherford, then a candidate for the GOP nomination for governor, told Illinois News Network it wasn’t even an issue.

Now Gov. Bruce Rauner is calling for creating right-towork zones in Illinois.

It is being treated by the political establishment in Illinois as a radical idea.

The public has a fair amount of support for the concept, though. A We Ask America poll conducted in March found that 59 percent of Illinoisans support the idea of right-to-work zones.

Perhaps the idea is moving from radical to acceptable.

With Wisconsin’s recent passage of right-to-work legislation, half of the states in the union have right-to-work laws.

Political observers in Springfield are scratching their heads and wondering why Bruce Rauner is beating the drum for right-to-work zones if it can’t pass the Legislature this year?

In his first two months in office, he already has changed the public discussion on forced unionism.

Is it too big a leap to think over time he will be able to change the state’s policies?

Look no further than the Overton Window.

The quest to make air travel safer A locked cockpit door, a commonsense post-9/11 security measure, gave the co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 all the time he needed to deliberately crash the aircraft in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board.

As the plane descended, the pilot, who had apparently taken a bathroom break, can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder frantically pounding on the door and begging co-pilot Andreas Lubitz to let him back in. His pleas were accompanied by chilling screams in the final moments before the plane, en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, slammed into the remote mountains.

The stunning crash, already being called a mass murder, raises urgent questions about how cockpit doors can be secured to keep

terrorists out, while allowing intentionally locked-out crew members to get back in.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires an electronic keypad in the cabin that can briefly unlock the door. But a person in the cockpit can override that system.

One obvious measure to consider is wider international adoption of the U.S. standard that requires at least two people in the cockpit at all times.

Another is seeking to develop systems that somehow allow a flight crew to open the door after keypad access is blocked – difficult to do without compromising security if there are terrorists on board.

Live-streaming video from the cockpit could help alert air controllers when there is a problem. And it

would be prudent to consider requiring pilots to routinely undergo a psychological assessment as part of medical exams required annually for those younger than 40 and twice a year for those 40 and older. Currently, pilots answer questions about their mental health on medical forms, and additional testing can be required if examiners think it’s warranted.

Flying is a remarkably safe way to travel. That’s in part because every tragedy is intensively investigated to determine what went wrong and how to avoid a repeat.

But nothing can make flying risk free. And the cost-benefit of new equipment or procedures is always a factor. Here, a measure taken to thwart terrorists may have cost lives because of the actions of a suicidal co-pilot.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After 10 innings Tuesday, the Morris and Plainfield Central baseball teams were tied at 7 when the lack of visibility forced the game to be called.

As usual in a tie, neither team was happy with the result.

“We made way too many mistakes,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “We gave up too many bases in the field and we left too many runners in scoring position at the plate.

“We know that in hitting, failure is inevitable. But, you need to give yourself a chance.

Taking called third strikes when guys are in scoring position is not giving yourself a chance. We have had some wins so far this year that we got just because we gave our-

selves a chance. Today, we didn’t do that very well.”

After Morris took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Plainfield Central (4-1-1) rallied to put up six runs in the top of the second.

Danny Brandon led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. An infield single to deep short by Josh Tesch put runners on first and third, then a grounder to second by Brandon Callendar scored Brandon to make it 2-1.

After a walk and a popout, John Kostelz singled to left to score Tesch and tie the game.

After a wild pitch scored Justin Wilner, Kyle McFarland reached on a throwing error that scored Kostelz to make it 4-2, Matt Brunetta doubled to right-center to score McFarland before Austin Blazevic walked, chasing Morris starter Tom Cheshareck from the mound. Cody Niewinski en-

tered and surrendered a double to Brandon that scored Brunetta for a 6-2 Wildcat lead before striking out Tesch to end the inning.

“We had a sloppy inning that led to most of their runs,” Kein said. “But, really, we were sloppy all game. This doesn’t feel like a tie. It feels worse than a loss.”

Morris chipped away at the lead, putting up a pair of runs of its own in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Cheshareck tripled down the first-base line, scoring Kendall Enger, who had singled, and Jordan Miracle, who was running for Tyler Bordner, who had walked.

Plainfield Central made it 7-4 in the fourth when Tesch singled to short left to score Brunetta, who had reached on an error. However, shortstop Jake McDonald threw out Blazevic trying to score to end

the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Niewinski, who pitched the rest of the game for the Redskins, singled in Miracle, who was running for Bordner again. With Emmet Chouinard at the plate, Cheshareck, who reached on a throwing error, scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-6.

Morris scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Enger singled to center before Matt Walker walked. A wild pickoff throw to second sent Enger to third before a strikeout. Bordner then hit a blooper to center that fell in, but Walker had to hold at first in case it was caught and was forced out at second while Enger scored to make the score 7-7.

From then on, it was Niewinski and Plainfield Central’s Nicholas Pratt matching shutout innings until darkness fell.

“The one bright spot for us today was Cody Niewinski on the mound,” Kein said.

“He came in and picked up his teammates. He is calm and poised, but he is also one of the toughest competitors I have ever coached.

“It’s not just about throwing strikes for him. He throws them in the right spot to exploit the hitters’ weaknesses.

He just has fun out there.”

Plainfield Central coach Jon Rosner was impressed with the outing by the junior lefty Pratt. “We brought him basically to face their lefthander (Cheshareck),” he said.

“Then he ended up throwing five innings. This was his first varsity appearance and he earned a chance to be one of the guys we look at harder.

“We needed that out of him because we have the WJOL Tournament coming up and we will need pitchers for that.”

For the time being, anyway, they will be battling to solve their puzzle without a key piece.

Junior Joe Butler, Minooka’s No. 1 pitcher and shortstop, suffered a bone chip in his right thumb in basketball in January yet finished the winter season. He also might have tendon issues.

He is committed as a pitcher and infielder to Illinois State, which is where the Indians’ other ace, Tyler Paulsen, will pitch his college ball.

Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said Butler will pitch only for the time being. He will not be able to hit for at least six weeks, and perhaps for the season, depending on what the doctors decide.

“That’s a big obstacle to overcome, our No. 1 pitcher and No. 1 shortstop,” Petrovic said. “It’s great to have him pitch, anyway.”

Some help arrived Monday.

Freshman Hayden Laczynski joined the varsity and played shortstop in Minooka’s 4-2 loss to Lincoln-Way East.

“The freshman made all the plays and was impressive,” Petrovic said.

Cristian Sanchez, who will play at Georgetown, is a solid hitter and glove man. He suffered a groin strain in last week’s opener against Morris.

Petrovic said he has to decide where to play Sanchez while that injury heals.

The coach pointed out the Indians have a good number of returning players. In addition to Butler, Sanchez and Paulsen, he cited second baseman Jake Null, catcher Cole Thompson, first baseman Jon Vesper and pitcher Miguel Ruiz.

“After them, however, we’re struggling to find guys who can make a big impact,” Petrovic said. “Laczynski may be one. Our history is we always start quickly. This year, it may take awhile.”

Wrigley Field renovation needed, stupid in planning CHICAGO – Way up atop the Jumbotron girders in left field, hard-hatted workers pound away with hammers.

The sounds ricochet through the Wrigley Field neighborhood like cannon balls dropped on frying pans.

The thought occurs: if they allowed this work to go on 24-hours a day, as was proposed by the Cubs, neighbors could be excused for going insane. As it is, the men from Pepper Construction Company seem to be working as if their shorts are on fire.

They’d better work that way.

The Wrigley Field rightfield bleachers won’t be ready for Opening Day on Sunday, just more than 100 hours from now. But the Cubs say the left and centerfield bleachers will be. That’s a lot of speed-pounding, a lot of speed-welding, my friends.

It’s stupid in the planning and execution. But needed?

My God, it is.

Just comparing the new outfield girders – huge, solid, unrusted – with the flimsy framework of the rest of Wrigley Field, is like comparing a new ocean liner with Noah’s Ark. That the ancient roof over the infield seats hasn’t blown away like Dorothy’s house in a tornado or collapsed like the Little Pig’s straw hut seems amazing. (We won’t even bring up the insane netting below the upper deck to catch falling chunks of concrete.

I’ve studied those nets in the past and felt that, in another life, they’d be fine for lake dragging for perch or coho, but not smelt.)

Rumors have spread that Opening Day visitors to Wrigley for the Cubs-Cardinals starter won’t be safe. Which I find laughable. The only thing fans have to fear is their own alcohol-fueled selves.

The new beams are not going to collapse on anyone.

The old ones? Well, Cubs fans have been risking those since before World War I. “There’s no higher priority than to ensure our fans enjoy baseball in the safest environment possible,” sniffed Julian Green, the Cubs’ vice president of communications.

He was dismissing “reckless” rumors that the upper decks might be unsafe.

Hard to say.

But on Irving Park not far from the ballpark, there’s a billboard touting the Vamoose Tattoo Removal company.

Some things, like the stain of 100-plus years of losing, need erasing. Forget the infrastructure.

This was a difficult bidding deal.

South made what sounded to his partner like a help-suit game-try.

North, holding excellent diamonds and four spades, jumped to game.

Then South, out of ideas, used Blackwood with a void and finally guessed well to bid seven spades.

(Users of textbook Roman Key Card Blackwood would have known that North had the diamond king, not the club king.)

The natural reaction is immediately to discard declarer’s club loser on dummy’s heart ace. But if South does that with this layout, he goes down one, falling foul to the unlucky 4-0 diamond break.

There are two other trick-one choices. Declarer can discard a diamond on the heart ace.

Then, after drawing trumps, South can play three rounds of diamonds, ruff a diamond in his hand, return to dummy with a trump, and pitch his club loser on the 13th diamond. Alternatively, my pick: Play low from the dummy, ruff in hand, draw trumps, and turn to diamonds.

When South sees the 4-0 split, he will realize the necessity for the diamond discard on the heart ace. ******
