Born: Aug. 15, 1931; in Glen Allen, MO Died: March 5, 2015; in Morris, IL Jack Cobb, age 83, of Morris, passed away Thursday morning March 5, 2015, at Regency Health Care in Morris. Born August 15, 1931, in Glen Allen, Missouri, Jackie Lynn was a son of the late Everett Myron and Luella (Long) Cobb. He was a graduate of Woodland High School in Lutesville, Missouri and went on to attend college in Cape Girardeau.

Jack honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and on January 1, 1954, he married Eugenia Isabelle Sharpin Mississippi.

Jack gained employment at Amoco Chemical Company, from where he retired in 1994 after more than 30 years of service. Jack was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Morris and most recently attended the Minooka United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Morris Moose Lodge, bowled on leagues in both Joliet and Morris, and participated in the Amoco Retiree’s Club. Jack took pleasure in metal detecting and working both crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He will most be remembered for his love of time spent with his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jean; three children, Charles Cobb of Mazon, Brent Cobb of New Lenox and Kristal Spencer of Minooka; five grandchildren, Meigan (Phil) Hansett, Kaitlyn Cobb, Trevor Spencer, Connor Spencer and Cole Spencer; one great grandson, John; one sister-in-law, Louise Johnston of Morris; and several nieces and nephews, as well as two cousins, Linda (Oscar) Govreau of Missouri and Norma Crews of Georgia.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Janice and Betty.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015, between the hours

of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 East Washington Street (one block east of Illinois Route 47) in Morris.

Funeral services will follow Monday morning, March 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Richard Darr officiating. Burial will be in Sample Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Charles Cobb, Trevor Spencer, Connor Spencer, Cole Spencer and Brian Spencer. Garbage pickup halted in Erienna and Wauponsee MORRIS DAILY HERALD Beginning Monday, residents living on weight-restricted roads in Erienna and Wauponsee townships will have their regular waste and recycling pickup halted due to weight limits placed on rural roads.

Residents in these townships will need to transport their trash to designated dumpster sites, unless advised otherwise by their waste hauler, according to a news release from the Grundy County Highway Department.

Residents living on the following roads are affected: Erienna Township: Bluff, LaSalle, Longpoint, Nettle Creek, Nettle School roads and the west one mile of Stockdale.

Wauponsee Township: Gulley, Lund, Lynn and Vanderpool roads.

All other residents will have garbage pickup continue as normal.

The following list provides the locations of the dumpsters for the affected townships. Only residents who

live on the affected roads may use these dumpsters. Persons other than the affected residents can be fined for using the dumpsters.

Erienna – 7200 Old Stage Road (just east of Mann’s Floral Shop).

Wauponsee – Township Building located at Route 47 and Southmor Road.

Recycling will be temporarily suspended for the affected residents living on these posted roads.

The spring thaw brings many issues for area township roads, according to the release. As the ground warms up, the frost under the roads melts and creates soft spots.

These soft spots can easily be damaged by such actions as a heavy truck driving over them.

The damage adds to the cost of road maintenance to taxpayers and takes money away from other needed projects. To help avoid these extra expenses, weight limits are established to limit the amount of damage to the roads.

Guild offers inspiration, support and friendship to members

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For the past 24 years, Mary Shoudis of Morris has been quilting, a hobby she didn’t have before joining the Pieces From the Heart Quilt Guild in Morris.

“I have been a part of the guild since day one,” she said.

“The initial meeting was at Peace Lutheran Church.”

The guild has grown since it originated, and it’s seen members come and go. The group, who all love quilting, meet regularly for inspiration, support and friendship.

“The friendship and the support, it’s not just for quilting,” Shoudis said at Thursday night’s meeting. “We’ve all had bad times in our life and we are here for each other.”

Shoudis isn’t in the first generation of quilters in her family, though. Like several others in the guild, her grandmother quilted and Shoudis inherited her quilt blocks. Laura Valdez of Coal City also ended up with pieces and patches her grandmother didn’t use.

Valdez’s 27-year quilting journey started when a sewing and alterations customer of hers from Gardner asked if she could make her a quilt.

She took on the challenge and made her first one, a tie quilt.

Valdez said she originally joined a group of women in Coal City who enjoyed quilting, but they decided to make their group more of a quilting bee and not a guild, which is what Valdez wanted to be a part of. “Morris has always been a guild so I joined this one,” she said. “The women in this guild are fantastic.”

They meet the first Thursday of every month on the third floor of the First Midwest Bank building at 220 W. Main St. in Morris.

Deb Buttry of Verona said the group gets together to promote the art of quilting. “We do charitable events like making lap quilts for those in the nursing home, and baby quilts to go to the hospital,” she said.

After a quick business meeting the group shares ideas, techniques, and has a show and tell of work they’ve recently completed.

“I learn a lot from the different women,” Valdez said.

“When you try a new technique you can come to the guild and teach it.”

The guild also has workshops where members can learn a new pattern or technique, trunk shows where a shop owner brings in items, and retreats. Quilting has changed a lot in the years the guild has been around, as have

Shoudis and Valdez both said they prefer traditional quilting. “I like traditional quilts but I like using the newer, bright fabric, just in traditional patterns,” Valdez said.

Some of the members create an entire quilt from piecing the patterns together and sewing, to adding the batting, backs, and hand or machine quilting them together. Others like Shoudis prefer to just piece the materials and send it out to be quilted.

Gardner gas leak checked, fixed Thursday evening

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Emergency personnel evacuated 28 adults, children, infants and family pets late Thursday night from an apartment complex in Gardner after Nicor found a 90 percent concentration rate of natural gas in the complex’s basement.

Terry Jensen, Gardner Fire Protection District chief, said complaints were made earlier in the evening and then checked out, but the problem came to a halt about 11 p.m. when the gas leak was finally found under the driveway entrance to the apartment complex at 413 W. Jefferson St. “Nicor determined the area was clear at 3:39 a.m.

Friday,” Jensen said. “They returned the concentration levels in the buildings to

proper levels and also determined there were no leaks within the structure of the buildings.”

According to Joe Schroeder, director of the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency, apartment and neighboring residents were displaced in single-digit temperatures until a school bus transported them to the Gardner fire station.

“It’s a good thing no one was hurt. We worked with people to locate friends and family for places to stay overnight,” Schroeder said. “Ten people spent the night at the firehouse, where we provided cots, food and beverage.”

Schroeder said he received a call to assist the situation about 10:30 p.m. and had monitored it since about 8:30 p.m. The Red Cross and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department also assisted.

County to form committee to work on life skills house Study completed for state’s attorney office construction

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Neal Sandburg, executive director of the Grundy County Special Education Cooperative, met with the Facilities/Law & Justice Committee Thursday night and said he hopes to keep the momentum going for a life skills house for co-op students.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said he can create an ad-hoc committee so discussions can continue about the possibility of the home being built on the campus of the Grundy Coun-

ty Administration Building.

That would allow county officials more time to consider allowing the Grundy Area Vocational Center’s building trades program to build the home for the cooperative.

“What I’d like to do is put together an ad hoc committee with Neal, Director [Lance] Copes from GAVC and a couple of board members who can meet and bring updates to the rest of the board,” Welter said.

S a n d b u r g s a i d h e u nderstands why the county couldn’t move forward with the limited time frame GAVC needed this year to be able to start building. He does want to ensure talks continue and the idea moves forward.

State’s attorney’s office gets construction updates

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland told the committee he met with engineers from Chamlin and Associates about construction to the state’s attorney office that would create a more secure workplace.

“The engineering study is done and we’ve already committed $5,000 to the project.

The project should be an additional $40,000,” Helland said.

Project cost expected to be more than $540,000, includes additional items

MINOOKA – Rather than remodeling only the floors of Minooka Community High School’s stadium grandstand bleachers, as approved at the February school board meeting, the board has added three more projects.

Beginning the day after graduation, the aluminum seats also will be replaced, as will the guardrail and surrounding chain-link fence.

The base bid for the new floor, plus bringing the bleachers into ADA compliance, was $469,300.

The new work, approved at Thursday’s board meeting, adds another $71,880 in expenses, bringing the total project cost to $541,180.

The project’s approval follows an insurance inspection that found safety deficiencies, mostly with the walking surface, which has gaps between the boards, causing a tripping hazard and also allowing spectators’ personal items to fall through.

The project will include installing a ramp and adding 60 ADA-compliant seats in front.

The foundation remains in good condition and is not in need of repairs. Finance Director John Bryk said the finished project will likely last the next 50 years. It will be done by lowest bidder RK Sports Seating Inc., of Indiana.

Wiring project to overhaul Internet ahead of exams

Another large project is the re-wiring of the school’s south campus by the firm Solid State, which began last week.

She had been a member of the

Order of the Eastern Star and was a past worthy matron.

She volunteered for the Shriners Hospital. She was employed by The Daily Times until her retirement in 1984.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Beryl “Buck”; two sons, Kevin (Cheryl) Braceville and Kirk (Lori) of Ottawa; four grandsons, Matthew, Christopher, Phillip and Stephen;

and nine great-grandchildren.

What happens if Republicans win the Supreme Court case against Obamacare?

They might end up like the dog that caught the car.

This week the court heard oral arguments in King v.

Burwell, the case challenging the payment of Obamacare subsidies through the federal exchanges. If the justices bar the payment of subsidies through those exchanges, it would be both a victory for the health law’s critics and a problem for Republicans running Congress.

Which is why a Senate GOP working group has been meeting for months to figure out what to do should the challenge to Obamacare succeed.

It’s a difficult problem on several fronts. First, even in a victory scenario, nobody knows just what the court will do. Would subsidies stop immediately? After some period of time? Republican lawmakers don’t know any more than anyone else about what path the justices will choose.

More importantly, nobody knows what will follow. Recently Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell told Republicans the administration has no “Plan B” should Obamacare lose in court.

So Republicans are working on their own plan. “We’re committed to helping the people who have been hurt by the health care law,” said Republican Sen. John Barrasso, leader of the working group.

“We’re not going to help the law, but we’re going to help the people, so they are not left in the lurch.”

The prospect of seeing those people lose their subsidies – even though some have received them for a short period of time, and even though Obamacare has imposed burdensome costs on many other Americans – is just too much

VIEWS Byron York for Republican lawmakers to risk. In recent private polling for the conservative group Independent Women’s Voice, a huge majority of respondents said it would be important to “do something to restore the subsidies” in the case of a court decision striking them down.

GOP lawmakers have decided to keep the money flowing. Maybe the payments won’t be called subsidies, but they will be subsidies. The essence of Obamacare – government subsidizing the purchase of health insurance premiums – will remain intact. For those conservatives who don’t like the idea of Obamacare as a new entitlement, who worry that it is furthering a sense of dependency on government – well, that is going to continue, no matter what happens in King v. Burwell.

Back in August 2013, when some Republicans were trying to defund Obamacare, even if it meant shutting down the government, one of the shutdown leaders, Sen. Ted Cruz, argued that, “The Obama administration’s plan is very simple – to get as many Americans as possible addicted to the subsidies, addicted to the sugar. They know the simple fact that in modern times, no major entitlement has ever gone into effect and then been undone.”

Now, as they work to keep the money flowing even in the event of victory in King v. Burwell, Republicans are proving that Cruz’s remarks were right on target.

The Redskins scored the first two baskets of the Class 3A Coal City Regional title game against top-seeded Lincoln-Way West, as Jake Walker scored on a jumper and Griffin Sobol got a pass from Evan Bjelland and scored underneath.

Lincoln-Way West then scored the next seven points before Morris’ Austin Patterson tied the score at 7 with a 3-pointer.

From then on, however, it was all West.

The Warriors (20-7) scored the next 20 points over the final minutes of the first quarter and the start of the second en route to a 68-42 victory. Sophomore Marco Pettinato had seven of his team-leading 15 points in the run. Lincoln-Way West, which claimed the first boys basketball regional title in school history, made its first seven shots of the second quarter, eventually building up to a 31-9 lead before Morris closed the first half on an 8-2 spurt to pull to within 33-17 at halftime.

“We were fortunate that everyone seemed to be firing on all cylinders offensively,” Lincoln-Way West coach Brian Flaherty said. “We were all on the same page.

“I have to give praise to Morris. They are a wellcoached team and they run probably the hardest stuff to defend we have seen all year and they run a lot of it. We have been a pretty good defensive team all year, but when we are playing offensively like we did tonight, we can be pretty tough to beat.”

That continued in the second half. After Morris closed the gap to 12 points a couple of times, West went on a 10-0 spurt to take a 45-23 lead. Jon Marotta, who scored 14 points

along with Trace Howard, had three buckets in the run, while Howard had a basket and apair of free throws. The fourth quarter saw Howard score 10 points, while Craig Majcher scored 10 of his 12 points in the second.

“We got behind the eight ball early with some foul trouble,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “We didn’t play very well on our help defense or take charges, both of which we did very well Wednesday (a 6252 win over Plano).

“The final score looks pretty bad, but in the third quarter, we had to start taking some risks and having some short possessions if we wanted to win. But you aren’t going to win many games shooting 4 of 31 from 3.”

In contrast, seemingly everything the Warriors put up went in. They went 6 of 9 from the floor in the first quarter, 8 for 10 in the second, 6 of 9 in the third and 10 of 15 in the fourth for a 30-for-43 (69.8 percent) showing.

“I feel bad for the core three seniors – Austin Patterson, Evan Bjelland and Jake Walker,” Blumberg said. “They have been part of more than 50 wins in their three years on the varsity together and went to three straight regional championship games. The first two were one-possession games, then we ran into a buzzsaw tonight. It would have been nice to see those guys, who have meant so much to our program, get a plaque.

“Each one of those guys, the younger players can take away something different.

Austin was probably in a gym 300 days a year putting up shots. The young guys saw what hard work can do as far as making yourself a good shooter. Evan has really paved the way for some of the guys to go play AAU ball and showed that offseason basketball can really help. Jake showed that you can still be a multi-sport athlete at this school and be successful at both.”

Newark’s sectional title bid falls in overtime

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com SOMONAUK – Flanagan-Cornell certainly had to earn its first boys basketball sectional championship since 1983, but earn it the Falcons did, defeating Newark, 58-57, in overtime in Class 1A play Friday at Somonauk.

With Flanagan-Cornell leading 55-51, Newark made the last of its many runs.

Will Clausel started the push with a driving score before Evan Schomer made a pair of free throws and, after a Falcons turnover, a layup.

But a Brian Albertson

3-pointer with 33 seconds to go in overtime restored the lead to Flanagan-Cornell.

The Norsemen spent the remaining time looking for the right shot, with coach Rick Tollefson finally calling a timeout with 1.3 seconds left.

Kendall Endres’ inbound pass went to Steve McGrath, who got a good look at a 3that would have counted but it glanced off the rim.

“From my angle, I thought it was down,” Clausel said of Anderson’s shot. “Nobody expected us to get here. We battled through a lot. We had a lot of adversity. ... We want it all next year. We want state.”

Flanagan-Cornell’s 10-for12 free-throw shooting to that point in the fourth quarter had allowed it to build a 48-44 lead with 24 seconds left in regulation.

Clausel drained a 3 with 17 seconds left.

Newark fouled with 7 seconds left, and the Falcons’ Austin Dutko went 1 for 2 at the line.

Clausel then took the ball coast to coast for a buzzer-beating driving basket to send the game into overtime.

The first half ended in an 18-18 tie, but getting there was a roller coaster. Schomer scored the opening basket of

the game, and the Norsemen were then held scoreless for more than 6:30. Flanagan-Cornell rattled off 10 unanswered points during that time, with Brian Albertson scoring eight of them.

Yet Newark, on a Matt Eike 3, a Zach Anderson three-point play and a Schomer basket, found a way to get even at 10 by the end of the first quarter.

The Falcons were down by a basket by the time they finally ended a nearly six-minute scoring drought of their own early in the second quarter.

They reeled off a total of seven points in succession before Newark closed the half on a 6-1

run.

Clausel had two points at halftime, but the sophomore finished with a game-high 25 for Newark (21-11). At the end of regulation, he scored 10 straight points for the Norsemen.

“Just stay aggressive,” Clausel said of his approach after halftime. “Shots weren’t falling in the first half. I wasn’t mad at myself. I just kept my head up.”

Jonathan Barth had 18 points and Albertson totaled 14 for Flanagan-Cornell (23-9), which advances to Tuesday’s Illinois State University Super Sectional in Normal.

Lester sets high expectations for himself, team following high sign-on

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – On the first day he pitched in a game for the Cubs, the team’s shiny, new ace demonstrated why the front office gambled one of those inherently risky longterm contracts on him.

Why Jon Lester was the No. 1 target of the Cubs in the off-season, why they were willing to go to $155 million for six years that are almost certain to include injuries, slowdowns or subpar seasons on the back end. Just ask him about all the ridiculous hype and expectations fans and media – and

maybe even a few people inside the organization – heap on the more recognized, celebrated prospects in camp.

Just ask him how fair it is to the kids. “Time to grow up sometime,” Lester said.

“When I played in Boston we didn’t have time to grow up,” he said after pitching two scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds Friday. “You just had to show up and play.

Each year you’re expected to win. That’s how I feel.

“Every year they should come in and expect to be not only division winners but also World Series champions. If you don’t have that mindset,

I think you’re playing for the wrong reasons.”

Lester talked with a firm, flat tone in response to every question after his start Friday – a businesslike demeanor borne of experience, success, purpose.

“Expectations are what you make of them,” he said.

“If you’re worried about what people expect of you, then you’re worried about the wrong things. You’ve got to be worried about the task at hand.”

Young pitchers such as touted prospects C.J. Edwards and Pierce Johnson have gradually begun working with and

around him, soaking up as much of his experience as they can. Lester won two championships in Boston – the first of which included him pitching the 2007 clincher over the Colorado Rockies barely a year after he was diagnosed with cancer, and just three months after returning to the mound following successful treatment.

He endured the biggest September collapse in history with the Red Sox during the beer-and-chicken summer of 2011 – followed by the Red Sox’ worst season in 47 years.

Followed by another World Series title in 2013. Few have

been there, done that in more ways in the game than Lester.

When it was suggested that prospects in Boston might have had a softer landing in the big leagues with more veterans he bristled.

“No,” he said flatly. “No softness. You’re expected to come in, and you’re expected to perform. And if you’re not, next. You can take that for what it’s worth. People say it’s hard to play there; the expectations are always so tough.

They’re expected to win every year. But if you’re not expecting yourself to win, why are you playing the game?

“I don’t show up to lose.”

South should ruff at trick one, cash all of his trumps (perhaps an opponent will discard a spade from four), and take dummy’s three spade winners. Is the spade seven now high? If so, discard the club queen on the diamond ace and claim.

If not, discard that spade on the diamond ace, then take the club finesse. Strangely, a 3-3 split or a finesse is 67.8 percent: the same as a 3-2 break.

Adults acne sufferers have many treatments available Dear Doctor K: I am in my 40s, but my face resembles a teenager’s • and not in a good way. What can I do to clear up my adult acne?

Dear reader: Acne is most common during the teenage years. But it may appear for the first time, or worsen, at the start of menopause.

Acne begins in hair follicles – little pits in the skin, each containing a hair. Glands at the bottom of the follicle make an oily substance called sebum. The sebum normally oozes up to the top of the follicle and onto the skin.

In acne, an overgrowth of skin cells can plug up the top of the follicle. As a result, the sebum is trapped below the surface of the skin. Bacteria that normally live on the skin get into the sebum and start to

Adult acne may appear on your face as: • Whiteheads (closed, plugged oil glands) • Blackheads (open, plugged oil glands) • Pustules (swollen red bumps, sometimes filled with pus) Treatments for acne try to stop the follicle from getting plugged up, to reduce the production of sebum and to stop the bacteria from multiplying.

Fortunately, many treatments

are available.

Treatment usually begins with one of the following: • Salicylic acid washes.

These formulas loosen dead skin cells. They also help dislodge plugs from whiteheads and blackheads. Salicylic acid washes are available over-thecounter and by prescription, but the prescription versions aren’t any stronger.

• Benzoyl peroxide gels, lotions and washes. These products dry and peel the skin and help clear blocked pores. They also fight bacterial growth. (Bacteria are both a cause and effect of acne.) They are available over-the-counter and in stronger prescription formulations.

For more serious cases, your doctor may prescribe: • Topical retinoids. These

drugs help clear the skin of plugged follicles by increasing the turnover of skin cells. They are available as creams, gels or liquids. The most common one, tretinoin (Retin-A, others), may cause skin irritation. But a time-release version is less irritating, and other topical retinoids are also available.

These medications increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Always use them with a sunscreen.

• Oral retinoid. A more powerful retinoid, taken by mouth, is used to treat severe, disfiguring acne. This medication has been associated with serious side effects, including severe birth defects, inflammatory bowel disease, depression and suicidal thoughts. People taking this drug must be registered in a national database

and undergo monthly monitoring by a dermatologist.

• Antibiotics. Certain antibiotics (available as creams, gels, lotions or combination products) can be applied directly to the skin to reduce the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

Serious cases are sometimes treated with oral antibiotics.

• Birth control pills. Estrogens (female hormones) decrease sebum production, and androgens (male hormones also made by women) increase sebum production. For that reason, birth control pills (with estrogens) are a treatment.

So is a medicine that blocks androgens – spironolactone.
