Melvin Robert Mill, of The Woodlands, Texas, formerly of New Port Richey, Florida and Coal City, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2015.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 N. Broadway, Coal City, Illinois. Funeral services will follow Monday, March 9, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 S. Kankakee St., in Coal City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating, and burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery.

Melvin was born June 12, 1925, in Coal City, the son of Sealy Mill and Anna (Knudtson) Mill. He married Eileen M. Born on June 16, 1946, at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City.

She survives.

Also surviving are three children, Teresa Meaux (husband, Ken) of The Woodlands, Texas, Robert “Bob” Mill (wife, Debbie) of Maryville, Illinois and Susan Cooper (husband, Mark) of Loxahatchee, Florida; six grandchildren, Brian (Corrine) Mill of Huntington Beach, California, Jason Cooper of Loxahatchee, Florida, Eric (Lisa) Mill of St. Charles, Missouri, Jenna (Zane) Moffett of Wellington, Florida, Jarred Mill of St. Louis, Missouri and Samantha Cooper of Woodstock, Georgia; three great-grandchildren,

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Mable and Albert Treasure; brother and sister-inlaw, Maynard and Lorene Mill; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Theresa and Chris Born; sisterin-law and brother-in-law, Vivian and Bill Finn; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Thelma and Larry Wickman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norma and Melvin Jackman; brother-in-law, Mervin Joneson; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mill graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1943.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was stationed with the Marine Pacific Command in Hawaii.

After WWII and his discharge in 1946, Melvin worked for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital at Dwight, Illinois, then in 1958, transferred to the Veteran’s Hospital at Marion, Indiana. In 1961, Melvin began employment with the Internal Revenue Service in Springfield, Illinois, serving as Public Affairs Officer.

In 1973, he was promoted to the Atlanta Georgia regional office of the IRS.

He retired from Federal Government service in 1980, and moved to New Port Richey, Florida, where he resided with wife, Eileen, until 2010.

In 2010, he and Eileen relocated to The Woodlands, Texas.

Melvin was devoted to his wife, Eileen, for 68 years. He was proud to be a charter member of the Coal City Emergency Squad, and was always willing to get involved in volunteer work.

He was past president of the Gulf Harbor Woodlands Home Owner Association (Florida), past president of the Springfield Youth Hockey Assoc., and managed weekly bingo for Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in New Port Richey, Florida, for many years.

He enjoyed taking cruises, visiting with his family, working on genealogy, discussing current events, and being a friend to many.

He was a member of theKnights of Columbus (5869), VFW, The Woodlands (Florida) Men’s Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles organizations.

Melvin was always cheerful and sociable to friends and strangers alike.

SmartAssest ranks city at No. 5 in state; social events, lower taxes among perks

And those same amenities are what keep him here now that he has retired. It came as no surprise to Beshoar that Morris was ranked No. 5 in a new study from SmartAsset’s list of the 10 best places to retire in Illinois.

“I was raised in Minooka and I came to Morris looking for acreage for farm stuff, good shopping and a community that has everything, and I found it,” Beshoar said. “We used to come to Morris to boat on the Illinois River and started attending Immaculate Conception Church when we were down here, and knew this was where we wanted to be.”

Beshoar retired from Nicor Gas Company last year and soon became engaged to Tamara Steinhauer, who lives in Wheaton.

The two plan to make Beshoar’s rural Morris house their dream retirement home and have started renovations to be completed by the time they are married in the fall.

“The car show was unbelievable,” she said. “There is plenty to do in Morris. We’ve joined the Morris Country Club, we meet people and while I’m planning my wedding I want to shop Morris first. I want the stores to be able to keep going.”

The analysis used data about tax friendliness, medical care, and social life when ranking the towns of Illinois.

Effingham, Willowbrook, Barrington, Maryville were the four cities that landed the No. 1 one through 4 spots on the list.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said it makes him feel great to know that Morris ranks so high on the analysis.

“I’ve always thought Morris was the best place to retire,” Kopczick said. “I always knew I would retire and stay here.”

“There is a lot of hard work in this community. The organizations, schools, nonprofits and the hospital make it what it is,” he said. “The people themselves are nice and friendly.”

That friendliness is part of what sold Steinhauer on the community, as well.

“It reminds me of where I live, everyone is so friendly,” she said. “I just love Morris.”

LOCAL NEWS AG: Cash payments were handled legally Grundy County sheriff’s office changes procedure from hourly to overtime pay

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Illinois Attorney General’s office found there is no basis for criminal charges against the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department regarding the payment of cash to deputies who worked traffic control at Exelon.

“A letter was sent last Friday to the state’s attorney office who had an assistant bring the letter to me,” Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Thursday. “The letter said they closed the investigation and there is no basis for criminal charges.”

The decades-old practice at the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department came under question in October after a Freedom of Information Act request filed by retired sheriff’s deputy Jeff Cole traced payments made to the department from Exelon Dresden Station that was not processed by the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office.

The money was used to compensate deputies who provided traffic control for the plant during its annual outage, when additional employees are brought in to repair and upgrade machinery.

Exelon always had negotiated an hourly rate of pay and then wrote a check to the Grundy County sheriff’s office to cover all of the man-hours worked.

The sheriff’s office then cashed the checks and dispersed it among deputies.

Paying cash to the deputies is what was being questioned.

The letter – signed by David Navarro, Chief Public Integrity Bureau with the attorney general’s office – to Grundy County State’s Attorney states: “In conjunction with the Illinois State Police and with the use of the Grundy County Grand Jury, we conducted a

review of the records and interviews of witnesses. The investigation has concluded that there is no basis for criminal charges.”

Callahan said procedures within his office have changed and deputies will be paid time and half for overtime when working at the plant rather than cash.

“They will now be compensated on the clock,” Callahan said.

He said the practice had been going on in the sheriff’s office for at least 20 years and it hadn’t been brought to his attention before last fall that it needed to be handled differently.

“If it’s wrong, it’s wrong,” Callahan said. “It was good to hear from the attorney general’s office that we didn’t break any laws.”

In January, a news release from Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said Grundy County had hired an accountant to ensure it is complying with state and federal laws.

Accounting firm Wermer, Rogers, Doran & Ruzon LLC is working with Grundy County Treasurer Lori Werden to make sure any taxes that are due for the last three years are paid to the IRS, which will cost the county an undetermined amount of money, assistant state’s attorney Perry Rudman said.

“Lori had to work backwards to determine if the hours were overtime and what should have been withheld,” he said. “The accountants said her efforts were good, but that means there is a list of reports that now have to be amended.”

He said it’s an agonizingly slow procedure, but Werden has done extremely well.

Werden did not immediately return calls Thursday seeking comment.

Officials advise preparing for spring weather

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With temperatures expected to reach the 50s next week, Joe Schroeder is advising county residents to prepare for the dangers of spring weather.

“A weather alert radio is a must-have for people, just like a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector,” said Schroeder, director of the Grundy County Emergency Agency. “It’s what will wake you up at night if a severe thunderstorm is coming.”

Schroeder said weather alert radios can be found at Wal-Mart locally and at most electronics stores. Radar and weather-preparedness apps for smartphones are necessary downloads, he said, and a list can can be found at Weather.gov/Subscribe.

Beachler of the National Weather Service in Romeoville said residents should make sure they’re signed up for severe weather text and email alerts.

“With the amount of snowpack and ice jams on rivers, it can be a dangerous time of year for flooding,” Beachler said. “People need to be aware of their particular community because each one can be different, but it can be as dangerous as any other season.”

Beachler and Schroeder recommended residents make note of snowpack on rivers, ponds and lakes before temperatures rise and rain arrives, which gives rain nowhere to drain.

Schroeder added that many areas of the county still have collections of leaves from last fall, which put a halt in rain drainage.

“The water level in the riv-

ers are pretty low right now because of the season we’re in, but if a northeast Illinois rain event came next week it’d wreak havoc all over the place,” Schroeder said.

County residents should have emergency kits with bottled water, nonperishable food, a NOAA radio, flashlights with batteries, personal hygiene, first-aid kit, whistle, manual can opener, copies of important documents, blankets and towels, clothes and a durable waterproof container. If you have pets, Schroeder said, provide anything they would need in an emergency.

The message Schroeder wants people to hear most is they must be the first to respond. In emergency situations, not everyone can be reached, so residents have to be prepared.

Premier Academy students show off art Whimsy hosted event Thursday for benefit of aspiring artists

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Thursday night was the culmination of months of dedication from Premier Academy students at the school’s first art show, held at Whimsy Fancy Goods and Fine Events, 117 Liberty St. in Morris.

Traci Tessone, owner of Whimsy, kept the store open after hours to host the show, which provided a evening of art appreciation for Premier Academy students such as Nick McLafferty of Morris.

“I’ve drawn my entire life and love all types of art,” McLafferty said. “This program has given me a chance to express myself and feel appreciated for my work. The teachers are there for students and always willing to help.”

Premier Academy is one of more than 100 similar programs in the state, funded by the Illinois State Board of Education through the Regional State Schools Program (RSSP) and Truants Alternative and Optional Education Program

(TAOEP) grants.

At-risk children in grades sixth through 12th are referred by their original school to the program, where coursework adheres to Illinois state standards. Lauren Vitko, employment and public relations coordinator at Premier, and Tessone both planned the event, which was open to the public.

Volunteer art teacher Amanda Tarascio said several of the students have shown a desire to pursue art as a career because of the environment provided in class.

“Some struggled with behavioral issues at other schools or simply didn’t fit in,” Tarascio said. “They enter Premier and the art class and become a big entity. They find it to be a huge release and an opportunity to express themselves. They seek solace in the art.”

April Norris of Coal City, mother of student Haylee Martinez, whose 15 drawings were the most submitted to the show, said the experience has been rewarding for her daugh-

ter.

“She’s opened up quite a bit,” Norris said. “She was very self-conscious in Coal City schools, but loves the teachers at Premier. She’s been there over a year and wants to do art or sing as a career.”

Two other students, out

of 18 who had art on display, could be heard negotiating prices for potential sales of their art pieces, which they’ve been working on since September.

“We’ve seen a huge jump in dedication since preparation for this started,” Vitko said.

“Displaying the art makes

them feel appreciated. They have pushed themselves to get the pieces completed in time for the show. They want to participate in more shows and request fine arts presentations in class.”

Premier Academy plans to host another show in the summer.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Right from the start of Wednesday night’s Class 3A Coal City Regional semifinal boys basketball game between Morris and Plano, it was clear that Plano’s game plan was to limit the touches for Morris’ Austin Patterson.

However, as is usually the case, when a team concentrates on one player, it opens up opportunities for others.

The Redskins were able to take advantage of this, and rolled to a 62-52 win over the Reapers to advance to tonight’s title game against top-seeded Lincoln-Way West at 7 p.m.

Morris (18-9) struggled with shooting early, and Plano got out to a 5-0 lead before Jake Walker made a 3-pointer for the Redskins’ first bucket.

Plano’s Darren Eiland scored to make it 7-3 before Walker hit another 3.

Another Eiland basket made it 9-6, and then Patterson made his only basket of the first half, a 3-pointer, to tie the score at 9.

Plano finished the first half with three buckets by Udochukwu Agomo, while Griffin Sobol and Evan Bjelland each scored for Morris as the Reapers took a 15-13 lead after one period.

“We pretty much know we are going to go through that every game,” Walker said about the opposition’s attention to Patterson. “Patty is our prime scorer, so we prepare for this all the time. We have a lot of other guys who can score, too, and we did as we had planned.”

In the second quarter, it was the Bjelland and Jake Jurasits show.

While the Morris defense was holding Plano scoreless for the first four minutes of the second, Bjelland scored eight

Jurasits finished with six points and led the team with 12 rebounds. Plano called a timeout after Morris took a 25-15 lead and scored the next four points, but Walker (14 points) scored in the lane to give Morris a 27-19 lead.

Marcus Ramirez ended the half with a basket for Plano, and the Redskins owned a 2721 lead at intermission.

“The second-quarter run was huge,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “Evan distributed the ball very well. He was scoring a lot, but he also played within himself. We got more post touches tonight than we are used to, and that was good to see. Griffin got some inside points for us, and as far as rebounding, Jake really stands out in my mind as getting a lot of the key ones.

Plano, which had won its previous eight games, went on an 8-2 spurt to start the second half and tied the score at 29 with 4:36 to play in the third quarter.

Patterson then converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Sobol followed with a pair of free throws for the Redskins to put them ahead for good at 34-29. Patterson finished with 12 points, while Sobol had 11.

the fourth quarter and maintained that advantage by hitting 13 of 16 free throws. Cody Niewinski came off the bench to go 4 for 4 from the line, while Sobol was 5 of 6.

“It was nice to see a guy like ‘Niewi’ come in, step to the line with confidence and

hit four big free throws for us,” Blumberg said. “That’s what you like from a senior. Also, I thought we did a good job of hustle plays. We got to most of the loose balls and got a few garbage baskets that way. We are going to have to do that again Friday night.”

Despite taking several fouls, Norsemen keep up the pressure

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media correspondent SOMONAUK – One might assume Newark’s 71-43 defeat of Ashton-Franklin Center on Wednesday at the Class 1A Somonauk Sectional came easily after the Norsemen built a 21-2 lead.

The Norsemen, however, know the game could have played out differently had they not withstood a potential crisis in the second quarter.

Their two leading scorers, Will Clausel and Evan Schomer, played a combined 1:40 in that quarter because of foul trouble; each started the quarter with two fouls and picked up a third a short time after re-entering the game.

mer were on the bench, but the 21-5 lead with which it began the second remained in double digits at 32-20 at halftime.

Clausel and Schomer both started the second half with their three fouls, and although they may have been a bit tentative, they were able to stay on the floor as the Norsemen remained in control.

“Evan and Will, they usually take up a lot of the points,” Newark senior Matt Eike said.

“You got guys like Steve (McGrath) out there – he could score almost 20 points a game if he wanted to. … We’ve got plenty of players that can pick it up and carry their load even when our two best players are out.”

Newark went 9 for 15 from the field in the first and never really cooled off, finishing 27 for 43 and 6 for 11 from 3-point land. A-FC shot 2 for 9 in the opening quarter and had nine

turnovers.

Cold weather is good for something: ice fishing Early Sunday morning, just as the sun beat back the night sky, I awoke to a sharp whining noise. It took me a few seconds to clear the fog of sleep from my mind and then I recognized it. I heard the musical sounds of a power auger cutting through the ice. They were back.

Several ice fishermen had been religiously working over the frozen bay in front of my house. They wrestled with all their equipment and donned heavy clothes the past several days. Apparently most of their efforts led to success because they kept returning.

When I finally tumbled from bed, I peered out the window to gander at what was up. The ice looked like swiss cheese marked with orange tip-ups.

A couple of buckets sat scattered about and voices of laughter filled the frigid air.

The most noticeable characteristic from the scene playing

out in front of me was the setting. The snow beat down and swirled all around them.

Watching the flurry of flakes made me glad to have a warm cup of coffee in my hand.

These guys didn’t care. They loved it.

As I watched them go about their business of hauling unsuspecting fish through the ice, I flashed back to my days as an outdoors sales representative. When you work in sales, the calendar year unfolds pock-marked with dates of importance.

The fishing merchandise needed to be sold by early November, the hunting merchandise cranked up in the spring, the list went on and on. The one date that I dreaded more than any other, was the one marked “ice.” In the outdoors world, this meant all of the ice fishing gear and equipment needed to be presented to buyers and have orders in hand by that date.

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers I learned quickly while earning my stripes as a rep, that selling ice is like asking your ex-girlfriend’s best friend to the prom. It never goes that well.

I would set up my appointments with the buyers, hock my other goods and then whip out the latest samples of ice fishing line, poles, reels, etc.

Their faces would scrunch up, they’d push back from the table in disgust, and even in some cases tell me the appointment was over. The reason – they still were trying to sell the stuff they had from years past.

I’ve mentioned before that unseasonable weather is bad for business. All types of business. That couldn’t hold more true when trying to sell ice

fishing equipment. One warm winter can destroy profit margins and force retailers to pack away all that gear in hopes the next year will bring about sustained cold. The result?

Very few retailers actually would stock much of the tools needed for ice fishermen to enjoy their sport. When I was selling, you would be lucky to walk into a sporting goods store and see even four foot of shelf space allocated to ice gear.

Maybe. And often times you could tell most of that equipment was “new and improved” many years ago.

Granted, when I was selling outdoors equipment, we had a string of mild winters.

I watched these guys in front of my house haul a northern pike through the frigid water. They high-fived, hooted and restored the tip-up for the next potential meal cruising by. These hardy

ice-anglers owned more equipment than I had seen in a long time laying about a frozen lake. As I drove into town, I noticed three other groups of ice fishermen on the same water.

While many of us say we have been cursed with a couple of really cold winters in a row, there are a small group of anglers who are elated with Mother Nature. They haven’t seen thick ice like these past two years in a long time.

I also wonder about those buyers who shunned my ice fishing wares not that long ago.

I imagine their anger has subsided and willingness to place orders in the dreaded “ice” category has increased.

Yes, cold weather is good for business. As long as you are in the business of ice.

OPINION The shepherd in the life of U2 As Bono launched into another mini-sermon on faith, justice and love, Father Jack Heaslip did what he had always done for U2 – he stood out of the limelight and prayed.

On this day in 2001, Bono wasn’t standing at a microphone in a packed concert venue.

He had slipped into a private gathering of staffers from Capitol Hill offices, a strategic circle of believers who shared his concerns about poverty, AIDS and oceans of Third World debt.

“God is watching. ...

Forget about the judgment of history. For those of you who are religious people, you have to think about the judgment of God,” Bono said.

And don’t worry about “asking God to bless what you are doing,” he said “Look for what God is doing and get involved in that, because that has already been blessed.”

That last saying – a Bono standard – was a quote drawn from the Anglican priest standing in the back of the room. As always, the man who had been U2’s behind-the-scenes chaplain for decades declined to be interviewed, but quietly met with people on the edges of the crowd.

In liner notes accompanying its 2014 album, “Songs of Innocence,” the band called Heaslip “our North Star,” perhaps knowing that motor neuron disease would soon take his life at age 71.

It was a rare glimpse of the man the U2 quartet knew as a guidance counselor and English teacher when they were boys at Dublin’s nondenominational Mount

In the book “U2 by U2,” Bono described him as “a source of inspiration and calm over our lives.”

Heaslip eventually became an Anglican priest with his own flock, while frequently touring with U2. He attended the band’s prayer and Bible study sessions and, on one occasion, someone recorded his blessing before the 2001 “Elevation” tour. He began with Isaiah 61, as quoted by Jesus. “ ‘The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor,’ ” said Heaslip, before his own blessing.

Anyone who knew Heaslip recognized those convictions, noted Mark Rodgers, a former top Republican aide in the Senate, who worked closely with U2 on social-justice issues.

“During shows he would often stand with his back to the stage, praying for the people in the crowd and, literally, everything that was going on,” Rodgers said.

“He didn’t care that no one saw him doing it. ... This was part of his ministry, for the band and for everyone there.”

Obama should live up to his transparency hype President Barack Obama continues to boast that he runs “the most transparent administration in history” with a straight face. But the claim doesn’t even pass the giggle test.

His administration has an abysmal record of prosecuting more whistleblowers than any predecessor.

His administration’s compliance with the Freedom of Information Act has gotten worse, rather than better, the longer he is in office. And he routinely sidesteps the seasoned White House press corps to sit for interviews with the likes of YouTube stars.

Add to the list of transgressions the new disclosure that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appears to have ignored federal guidelines by using only a personal email account. She also made no apparent effort to save her emails for posterity until

just a few months ago, more than a year after she resigned, according to The New York Times.

Other administrations, including that of George W. Bush, had similar problems.

But those administrations weren’t selling their boss as President Transparency.

Obama’s former secretary of defense, Chuck Hagel, also apparently shunned an official work email account.

The law Clinton might have violated requires emails to be preserved in the National Archives.

But her decision shows a callous disregard for public-records laws put in place to ensure citizens and journalists have access to the workings of their government.

Her boss, Obama, either didn’t know, which is unlikely, or didn’t seem to care.

Back in 2009, on his first day in office, Obama signed a memo that supposedly flipped

the administration of FOIA to require agencies to show why records should not be released.

Bush had required requesters to show why they should.

Six years into “the most transparent administration in history,” it’s now clear that Congress should put that standard into law and pass the Freedom of Information Act Improvement Act. It passed the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. For evidence of why the law is needed, check the FOIA Project, an independent watchdog group that has compiled a database of lawsuits demanding access to federal records.

The Obama administration has been sued significantly more than the Bush administration, with the highest tally on record being 2014.

Obama should live up to his own marketing hype.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In today’s deal there are two firstclass problems. And if your children play bridge, show them this column.

South is in three no-trump. After West leads the heart queen, how should declarer plan the play? And what should he do differently if the spade ace and spade two are exchanged between the North and South hands?

In the given auction, North’s three-diamond rebid was game-invitational. (If South had the spade ace as well, he would have rebid two spades, then the last two bids would have been the same.)

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. The obvious line for two more tricks is to play on diamonds, where only a 3-2 split is needed (a priori, 67.8 percent). To attack clubs requires a 3-3 break (a priori, 35.53 percent). And if the spade ace is in the South hand, that is the right line. Declarer should take the first trick and duck (lose) a diamond.

However, with the spade ace in the dummy, South can get home if either diamonds are 3-2 or clubs are 3-3, which raises the a priori odds to 79.25 percent.

Declarer, after taking trick one, should cash dummy’s top diamonds.

If the suit splits 3-2, he plays a third round and coasts home with an overtrick. But when diamonds break badly, South turns to clubs and, with this layout, makes his contract.

If your children do not play bridge, teach them immediately!

American family’s face of the future is multiracial Dear Abby: My husband and I are both Caucasian. Recently, we adopted a beautiful mixed-race baby girl. She’s Vietnamese, African-American and Hispanic. She is not even 4 months old, and already we have experienced some negative comments from strangers.

Where we live is progressive and open-minded, and I’m not so much concerned about our neighborhood or schools. But I’m no dummy. I know we’re going to encounter people who have “questions” or unwarranted “opinions” (to put it nicely).

The problem is his mother.

She was cold and distant to him when he was a child, and her emotional abuse has continued into his adulthood. Holidays are a nightmare, visits a chore, and his phone calls with her often leave him in tears.

I wanted him to come with me to spend the holidays with my family, but she guilted him into spending them with her.

I hate seeing him go through this, and I don’t know what I can do about it. I think she is a

Dear Protecting: What you think about his mother isn’t as important as what your boyfriend does. From your description, their relationship is unhealthy. My advice is to encourage your boyfriend to discuss this with a licensed mental health professional. If he does, it may give him the incentive he needs to distance himself from her.

P.S. When the next family holidays come around, by all means invite him to spend them with your family. That way he will have a chance to see how a normal family functions.
