Born: May 25, 1944; in Streator, IL Died: March 2, 2015; in Dwight, IL Delbert J. Wright, age 70, of Dwight, passed away at home, on March 2, 2015.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2015, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Hager Memorial Home, Dwight. There will be a service on Friday, March 6, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Hager Memorial Home. Pastor Victor Randle will officiate.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Meredith (Burton)Gestner, Dwight; son, Darin (Mariah) Wright, Normal; and his four grandchildren, Chelsea Wright, Andrew Wright, Liam Gestner and Olivia Gestner.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Clarence and Elizabeth Wright; and his sister, Barbara Clapp.

Delbert was affiliated with New Life Church. Delbert was a member of many groups, including the New Life Men’s Group, the Masons, the American Legion, and he was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 2608.

Delbert was a former village of Dwight Trustee.

Delbert was also a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served in the Air Force.

Delbert enjoyed corvettes and car shows, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be missed dearly.

• Collin J. Kezerle, 40, of Gardner, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Sunday on a LaSalle County warrant for contempt.

• Edward J. Draksler, 56, of Channahon, was arrested

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence.

He was given a March 23 court date.

• David M. Scanlon, 42, of Minooka, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Saturday on charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.

• Robert A. Cryder, 54, was arrested by Morris police on a charge of domestic battery.

He was given an April 7 court date.

• Brandon L. Potempa, 23, was arrested by Minooka police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Saturday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and driving while license suspended.

TROUPE group performs evocative scene at Morris High School

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Parents and high school students gazed at a destroyed SUV surrounded by firemen and beaming fire truck lights for over five minutes as the crew tried to pry open a rear passenger door.

When it finally cracked open, a teen lay unconscious before being carefully placed on a gurney.

This was the scene in the parking lot of Morris Community High School on Tuesday night at this year’s “Road 2 Reality” event.

Performed and organized

by Teens Resisting Our Universe’s Problems Effectively (TROUPE) with help from community leadership, the event aimed to raise awareness on the dangers of distracted driving.

Morris High School juniors Maren Bashor and Jessica Jurak, student coordinators of TROUPE, said they’ve been rehearsing the scenes once a week since September 2014 until last week when they practiced every day.

Now their work comes to light.

“The most rewarding thing about participating is knowing that we can make a difference,” Jurak said. “We may not reach all of them, but if we can just reach some to make them think about how they drive, we will know we made a difference.”

Attendees were led on a tour through the school with everything from road sign puzzles to the mock car accident and following a legal trial ruled on

the students see the message you’re trying to send, then you know the work you put in is for the better.”

Sobol said he believes there’s been a decrease in drug- and alcohol-related accidents, injuries and deaths, while the frequency of distracted drivings accidents has increased.

“It’s something that is on the conscience of the community with all the texting and other forms of technology being used these days,” Sobol said. “It’s a great concern because the volume and usage of phones.”

Morris High School Principal Kelly Hussey said the students did a lot of work to get to this point, and said preparing for the event was intense, much like the scenes depicted

by TROUPE. “Teens think they’re invincible in their minds,” Hussey said. “The immediacy of the text in front of them, whether receiving or sending, is more important to them than any other thought. If we can bump them out of that mentality to realize there will be time for it later, then we can give them a jolt of reality then we’ll be successful with this event.”

Sonja Torkelson, a grandmother of a student in TROUPE, said it was a great reminder that one person’s decision can impact so many lives.

The driving student in the mock scene was given 15 years in prison after the deaths of two others in the car, and her boyfriend become a paraplegic.

The driver was distracted by numerous forms of distraction in the car, including antagonizing of the driver, loud music and playful arguing.

LOCAL NEWS Dwight looking to build new $4.1 million pool

Students get their own art showcase

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – The village of Dwight is looking at ways to finance a new city pool to replace the current Stevenson Pool, which is almost 40 years old. Village Administrator Kevin McNamara said the pool committee recommended creating a family aquatic center to replace the existing pool for an estimated cost of $4.1 million. “We are looking at replacing the current pool, which was built in 1976 and is coming to the end of its life,” McNamara said.

The original pool was built with donations from the com-

munity. “They went door to door in the community,” McNamara said. “We are hoping to fundraise about 25 percent of the cost this time, if the board approves it.”

He said the original pool cost about $250,000. Grants wil be applied for to help fund the project, there will be a fundraiser and the balance would be paid by the village.

If the board approves the project, it will be looking to start construction at the end of this year’s pool season, McNamara said.

Calls to Village President Jared Anderson and the pool committee were not immediately returned.

Gardner student honored by Blackhawks Hockey skills, volunteering, coaching recognized at Feb. game MORRIS DAILY HERALD CHICAGO – A Gardner grade schooler has been recognized by the Chicago Blackhawks as the BMO Harris Bank Youth Hockey Player of the Month.

BMO Harris Bank, in partnership with the Chicago Blackhawks, recognized Cole Walsh of Gardner along with Willis Griffin and Tom Cotter as the BMO Harris Bank Youth Hockey Player, Coach and Volunteer of the Month, respectively. Alex Dousmanis-Curtis of BMO Harris Bank presented the awards during the on-ice ceremony at the Feb. 24 Blackhawks game.

For the past seven seasons, BMO Harris Bank and the Blackhawks have teamed up to honor one youth hockey coach and youth hockey player each month for their outstanding achievements both on the ice and in their communities.

This is the second year BMO Harris Bank and the Blackhawks are recognizing one volunteer of the month, awarded for their efforts in giving back to their community. All candidates are nominated by teammates, coaches, friends or family members through the Blackhawks’ website and are judged by an amateur hockey committee.

Player of the month Walsh

is a seventh-grader at Gardner Grade School. Walsh plays for the Jaguar Hockey Club and has been playing hockey since 2010.

His team won the 2014-15 NIHL Gold A. President’s Cup. Walsh has been an honor roll and high honor roll student, and plays the trumpet in his school’s band. He volunteered at St. Baldrick’s for the past two years and plans to volunteer again this year.

Coach of the month Griffin lives in Oakbrook Terrace and works with the JV Boys Hinsdale Central High School hockey team based out of Hinsdale. He first started coaching in 1997 when he moved to Houston, Texas. Last year, Griffin’s team won the Illinois West Championship.

Chicago resident Cotter is a volunteer for the St. Patrick High School Hockey Club

Walnut Trails students participated in hand-washing exercises Tuesday

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – As the classroom lights went out and the black light came to life, fourth-grade students at Walnut Trails Elementary School in Shorewood saw the glowing results of what can be missed when they wash their hands.

This month’s “Ag in the Classroom” presentation was on nutrition and hand-washing, with assistance from Grundy County Youth Educator John Davis and his traveling black light. He visited the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 school Tuesday. “It’s important to wash your hands to stop the spread of germs,” Davis told the students.

Fellow student Andrew Coldwater said he’s learned that everyone is affected by the farmer in one way or another. “I’ve learned that the importance of agriculture is that it keeps us living,” he said. “We see it in the grocery stores when we buy food, dairy milk comes from a cow and a lot of people drink milk.”

Davis has been helping the farm bureau with Ag in the Classroom for years and said he feels it’s just as important today to discuss where food comes from as it has always been. Walnut Trails Principal Kathy Cheshareck said Minooka schools have hosted Ag in the Classroom for more than 20 years. “The area has changed from the rural farms it was when Minooka was smaller,” she said. “We value the importance of students recognizing all that agriculture brings to the county.”

Cheshareck said the students benefit from broad-based knowledge.

Demonstrators aren’t doing themselves any favors MADISON, Wis. – It’s not every day I interview someone dressed in nothing but bright red long johns and a medieval Viking helmet standing in the middle of a state capitol rotunda.

But that’s what I found myself doing last week when reporting at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

That statehouse was filled with union angst as hundreds, perhaps thousands, of activists protested a measure to make Wisconsin a rightto-work state. As Wisconsin senators debated the measure, protesters misbehaved.

They hollered and screamed in the rotunda.

Some waved signs and placards laden with obscenities.

the Senate gallery by state troopers after disrupting the proceedings.

So much for being staid Midwesterners.

I’ve covered the Illinois Statehouse for 15 years and, before that, the Nevada Legislature. I’ve never witnessed anything under a dome quite like what I saw in Madison this past week.

My only thought after observing the shenanigans: They sure aren’t doing themselves any favors.

After all, it’s kind of hard to have a serious public policy conversation with someone clad only in long johns.

As I was standing in line to enter the Senate gallery, the fellow behind me explained that Scott Walker engages

VIEWS Scott Reeder in mind control and a group called “ALEC” had people locked up for being delusional.

The woman in front of me in line explained to me that Walker, a Baptist preacher’s son, couldn’t be a Christian because of his opposition to some of organized labor’s positions and Jesus’ commandment to love one another.

I asked the woman if she loved Scott Walker. There was a long pause and then she sputtered, “Just a little bit.”

The problem with sanctimony is that it indicts those

pointing the finger.

Free speech is a precious thing. It can be used effectively or not particularly well.

In fact, one could argue that the folks demonstrating in Madison these past four years are among the people most responsible for Gov. Scott Walker’s rise to national political prominence.

The rascals on the left alienated themselves from the majority of voters.

After all, a hero needs a villain.

David had Goliath.

Batman had Joker.

Hamilton had Burr.

And Scott Walker?

Well, he has the unions.

As union demonstrations spiraled out of control, rankand-file voters found them-

selves identifying more with Walker.

They couldn’t bring themselves to support what they saw as an increasingly radical labor movement.

During the last four years, Walker has won three races for governor, including a recall pushed by the unions.

I asked the fellow in long underwear why Walker keeps winning and his answer was telling: “I have no idea.”

Maybe he ought to look in the mirror.

Plano changes plans in 2nd half

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – When an underdog wants to pull off an upset in the postseason, nearly everything has to go its way.

For nearly three quarters of Monday night’s game against third-seeded Plano in the Class 3A Coal City Regional, that happened for the No. 6 Coal City boys basketball team.

After playing a nearly perfect first half, Coal City couldn’t quite sustain that level in the second half Monday night and ended its season with a 44-35 loss. The Coalers, who finish at 8-20 after a 1-11 start, played a tight, packed-in zone defense, slowed the game down by being methodical and selective in their shots on offense and led Plano 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Isaiah Washington, who led Coal City with 13 points, scored the first basket of the game before Plano grabbed a 4-2 lead on buckets by Marcus Ramirez and Dahveed McKinney. Christian Johnson, who finished with 12 points, made a 3-pointer to put Coal City ahead 5-4 and Washington scored again to make it 7-4.

Udochukwu Agomo ended the first-period scoring with a putback for Plano.

Plano’s Brett Johnston scored all nine points in the second quarter for the Reapers, converting an old-fashioned 3-point play and draining two 3-pointers. The last one gave the Reapers a 15-14 lead. Coal City’s Johnson then scored the final five points of the first half, hitting a 3-pointer with just under a minute to play, then making a driving basket in the lane at the buzzer, to give Coal City a 19-15 halftime lead.

“Our guys were ready to play and executed the game plan almost to perfection in the first half,” Coal City coach Brad Boresi said. “We had a couple of occasions where we didn’t cover the three very well, but other than that we played very well. The kids were not intimidated by Pla-

Coal City’s Budde signs with Trinity

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Catching has always been a valuable commodity in baseball circles. If you have a player who is good behind the plate, and wants to play there, you have something. Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights will have something next year. That’s because, on Tuesday morning, Coal City’s D.J. Budde signed his national letter of intent to play for the Trolls next year.

“I like catching,” said Bud-

de, the son of Dan and Vickie Buddie. “I am the kind of player that can fit in anywhere, but I feel like I help the team out the most by catching.”

Last season, Budde was the Coalers’ catcher, as well being the team leader in batting average. He will look to fill the same role this season, and beyond.

“I think this is a good fit for D.J.,” Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said. “It’s an NAIA school and he may be able to play right away. He’s a good catcher, and he was our team

leader in batting average last year. He’s a very good athlete with good speed and a good arm for his size.

“I think he will be able to make the transition to the next level very well. He will persevere through hard work, and that’s something he’s always done here. He’s been fun to coach.”

His new coach feels the same way. “What I like about D.J. as a player is that he is a very good athlete,” Trinity Christian coach Justin Huisman said. “He brings a confi-

dence, both behind the plate and at the plate.

“It’s definitely nice to find a player right out of high school with the catching ability he already has. We have a couple of veteran catchers that he can learn from and jump right in.

It’s an exciting fit for both of us.”

Budde’s father is a member of the Coal City Police Department, and D.J. wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps as he plans to major in criminal justice. “I really thought the academic fit was good for me,”

he said. “Trinity Christian has a very good criminal justice program. Sports is just a plus. Now, I get to go to college and continue to play baseball, which I have loved my whole life.”

No matter how far he goes, Budde will always take some lessons he learned at Coal City with him. “I have learned to always stay humble,” he said.

“There’s always someone better than you out there, so I am just going to take in as much as I can learn from the older players once I get there.”

Morris’ Knapp earns all-OVC honors at EIU STAFF REPORTS CHARLESTON – Morris graduate Haleigh Knapp, who won three consecutive Class 2A state high jump titles, recently helped Eastern Illinois University’s women’s track and field team win the Ohio Valley Conference indoor title.

Knapp, a freshman at EIU, finished first in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches in the meet held last weekend on the EIU campus. The finish earned her first-team all-OVC honors.

Eastern Illinois finished with a total of 132.5 points, outdis-

tancing second-place Tennessee State’s total of 101.0.

I think South should have passed over five clubs, but when West rebid five hearts and North passed (assuming he did), it would have been reasonable for him to compete with five spades.

West led his heart ace. Then, judging that South would not have bid six spades with two low hearts in his hand, West did brilliantly to shift to a club.

Now declarer had to decide on the trump split. If it were 2-2, he could draw trumps ending in the dummy and run the clubs. But South felt that, given West’s bidding, 1-3 was more likely than 2-2.

Declarer, after winning the second trick in the dummy, cashed the spade ace, then played high clubs, discarding diamonds from his hand. When East ruffed the fourth club, South overruffed, led a low spade to dummy’s nine, drawing East’s remaining trump, and claimed.

Husband’s secret texting puts his wife on high alert Dear Abby: I was recently told by a friend that my husband had sent her texts of an inappropriate and sexual nature. My husband didn’t deny that he sent them and refused to tell me what he sent.

This woman is envious of my husband and jealous of our relationship. She often comments about how she’d love to have a man like mine, etc. My concern is, he admits he texted her, but I don’t understand why. My intuition tells me she told me the truth, but I want to trust my husband.

Dear Suspicious: Your marriage may not be over, but it could be in jeopardy. Considering what has been going on, you have every right to be concerned.

Marriage counseling may help you and your husband get back on track if he’s willing to go with you. But if he isn’t, then for your own sake, get counseling on your own because you may need to talk to someone who isn’t emotionally involved in your turmoil.

It will make you stronger.

Dear Abby: Every time my new wife and I visit my mom or she visits us, my mother scratches my back, rubs my arm, rests her hand on my inner thigh, tickles me, hugs me or touches me any chance she gets.
