Marilynn K. Enger, ate her favorite piece of cherry pie for dessert before bed and slipped peacefully away in her sleep on Friday, March 27, 2015.

She was born March 16, 1941, in Harvard, Illinois to Clarence O. and Freda M. (Krohn) Dennis. She started teaching at Morris Community High School in Morris, Illinois in 1963 and worked in various positions until she retired in 2012.

She dedicated her life to the high school and remained a Redskin at heart. After retiring, she moved to East Peoria, Illinois to spend time with her daughter and son-in-law, and their three grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, JoLynn (Shannon) Mollenhauer of Washington, IL; and a son, Dennis Laughary of Margate, FL; three step-children, Keith, Pat, and Denise; and 3 grandchildren, Adam Joseph, Sara Makenzie, and Evan Michael; four siblings, Carter “Bud” Dennis of Mendota, IL, Robyn (Paul) Geye of Lake Geneva, Robert Dennis of Harvard, and Mark Dennis of San Francisco.

She was preceded by her parents; first husband, Joseph Laughary; and second husband, Les Enger.

A visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home, 107 W. Sumner St., Harvard, IL 60033. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Bruce was born May 6, 1938 in Joliet. He graduated from Joliet Township High School Class of 1956. Graduate of University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. He began his career at Joliet Prescription Shops and retired in 2013 from Doc’s Drugs - Coal City and Dwight.

He was beloved for his dedication and impeccable customer care.

Lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. 2014 Backbone Award recipient for his dedication and service to the Joliet American Legion band. Bruce played clarinet with the American Legion Band and the Joliet Junior College Community Band.

Lying in state at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 412 E. Benton St., Friday, April 3rd from 9:30 a.m. until services at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Tim Linstrom officiating. Interment Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.

Marietta Schiradelly, 62, of Morris passed away Saturday morning, March 28, 2015, at Sandwich Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Sandwich, IL. Born February 24, 1953, in Lebanon, Kentucky she was the daughter of the late Ellis and Mary (Hardin) Wohner.

She was raised and educated in Kentucky and on November 17, 1971, she married Ken Schiradelly. For many years, she worked cleaning area homes for people.

Marietta loved being with her family and especially enjoyed NASCAR with her favorite driver being Dale JR #88.

Going for walks with family and visiting area thrift stores was always fun.

In 2013, Marietta suffered her first stroke leaving her family devastated. The people of Morris Community came together with a huge fundraiser hosted by Clayton’s Tap. Ken and his family would like to thank the community of Morris and especially Scott and Lois Darlington, owners of Clayton Tap for their generosity, thoughts and prayers over this past two years.

Truly a community where people come together to help each other in difficult times.

She is survived by her husband, Ken; and two children, Kenny and Rhonda both of Morris.

Two brothers, Ron Wohner of Morris and Dan Wohner of Minooka.

Cremation Rites have been accorded and there will be no services for Marietta.

• Karisa K. Cox, 23, of Joliet, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff deputies Sunday on a charge of possession of cannabis of 10 to 30 grams. She also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. She was given an April 27 court date.

• Jennena L. Ray, 34, of Joliet, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence of drugs. She also was cited for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Smalls, a 2-year-old great dane, was another eye-catcher at the park. A haul of 23 eggs was counted by Smalls’ owner Kendell Behrens and her daughter and placed on a picnic table. The tallest dog in the park had no problem seeing all the treats on the table, but made little effort to snatch them up.

“We’ve been going to Bonnie’s other events too, such as Yappy Hour at Clayton’s Tap,” Behrens said. “But this is Smalls’ first Easter Egg Hunt.”

Smalls won’t get all 23 treats: Some were taken home for Behrens’ parents’ dog, which isn’t too friendly, she said.

MORRIS – Temperatures in the low 30s Saturday morning couldn’t put a dent in the attendance of the 11th annual Doggie Easter Egg Hunt at Goold Park in Morris.

Bonnie Latta, event founder and owner of Bone-ified Care, a dog-training, sitting and services company, said a new attendance record was set.

“There were at least 80 dogs here today,” Latta said. “The weather is always my top concern and I was worried the cold would deter some people.

But we have a sunny and clear day. We’ve had years where the park is full of puddles.”

There were 1,500 plastic eggs with treats scattered throughout the park, which still had a pile of snow in the parking lot. On Latta’s call, owners led their dogs on leashes to pick up the scent of treatfilled eggs to add to their baskets.

The temperatures didn’t stop Mark and Lisa Smyk and their 1-year-old rottweiler, Jack, from attending.

“Jack is our third rottweiler and we try to take our dogs to every event Bonnie hosts,” said Lisa Smyk of Morris. “It’s great socialization for Jack.

LOCAL NEWS Three candidates compete in mayoral race Cox runs again for top Gardner spot

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Gary A. Cox, a former Gardner commissioner, is trying his hand again at running for mayor of Gardner.

Cox previously ran for the village’s top spot in 2011 against the late Mayor Tom Wise, where he lost the election 307 to 169 votes.

Cox has lived in Gardner since 1989 af- Gary A. Cox ter living and attending school in Joliet and Eldorado. He is running against appointed Mayor Michael Serena and candidate Donald E. Reed.

Cox served as Gardner’s electrical inspector for 12 years before being elected in 2007 as a village commissioner.

“After spending four years as a commissioner I thought becoming mayor should be my next step,” Cox

said. “I want to turn the town around.

I don’t like the direction it has gone in the last 16 years.”

Cox served as the commissioner in charge of parks and public safety. He said during his term as commissioner he made sure the parks were maintained and made safe for the community.

He said he would like to see the village stop fighting with the other taxing bodies in the area, citing a lawsuit between Gardner-South Wilmington High School and the village over tax increment financing district money, in which the village was withholding funds from the high school. In November, the village lost its appeal and issued a check to the school district.

He said the village spent too much money fighting the issue.

“The town needs a different direction,” Cox said.

Serena hopes to be formally elected as Gardner mayor

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Michael Serena of Gardner is now running for the position he was appointed to Feb. 27 after the death of Mayor Tom Wise.

Raised in South Wilmington, Serena moved to Gardner in 1988. He is a union laborer and is the vice president Michael for Laborers’ Serena Local 75.

“I’m honest, I have the ability to be in the public eye and if there is an issue within the village, I’m a hands-on guy. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty,” Serena said. “It’s not that I don’t trust the guys under me; I’m just not above

helping others. I’m a genuine honest guy, not a politician type.”

Serena is running against Gary A. Cox and Donald E. Reed for mayor.

Serena was appointed to commissioner in 2006 by Wise, and was elected to a full-term in 2007. He has served as the commissioner over streets and alleys since he was elected.

The Gardner Electoral Board ruled in January in favor of Serena, dismissing an objection made by Cox to keep Serena’s name off the ballot for mayor.

Serena’s experience includes sitting on the board at the Grundy Economical Development Council to help find ways to grow the village and attract business and industry

Reed looks to turn Gardner around

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Donald E. Reed has never held an elected position but he is seeking to become Gardner’s mayor to help take the village in a new direction.

Reed moved to Gardner 17 years ago to flip a house he had purchased like he had done in other municipalities.

But he said he fell in love with the town and Donald E. decided to stay.

“I’m 68 and it’s my Reed first try at public office because I thought the village needs a new, fresh direction to go in,” Reed said. “I want to make Gardner what it was like when I first came here. I want the warm, fuzzy feeling I moved to.”

Reed is running against appointed Mayor Michael Serena and former commissioner Gary A. Cox. Reed said as he pulled off the in-

terstate and drove into town past the “Welcome to Gardner” sign, he felt like it said “Welcome Home.”

He said the time is right for a change after the death earlier this year of Mayor Tom Wise.

“The mayor passed away. If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t have run,” he said.

Reed would like the village move from a bedroom community to one with job opportunities so that residents can work in the town they’ve chosen to live in.

In a community with 1,500 to 1,600 residents, only five or six show up to Village Board meetings, he said, and he’d like that to change. He wants to work with the residents to create a better community where more people are involved.

“There are so many overused words – open, honest, transparency,” he said. “But that is what I want to see. I want more people to be active in the community.”

Five running for three spots on high school board Minooka District 201 seats are up for re-election every four years

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Five candidates are vying for three seats in the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Board of Education election April 7.

Three of the five candidates – Kristan Crouch, John Clucas and Al Skwarczynski – already sit on the board, with only Kevin Hannon leaving after a four-year term without seeking re-election.

A two-year seat is open on the board, with candidate Curtis Jebens running unopposed for this position.

School board members in this district will face the rollout of the new all-day kindergarten program, which includes the hiring of new teachers and staff, and the debate over fine arts availability. The search for a new superintendent also will be a hot topic, as well as keeping budgets in check.

“We have over $2 million in reserves that could be used for water and sewer expansion for development,” Cox said. “We still have to have reserves, but not $2.25 million.”

Cox said he would like to see water taken across the interstate first and as industry comes to the area, officials could look at building a second sewage treatment plant on the west side.

“We have to get water across there, we won’t get motels or other businesses without it,” he said. “We are the only I-55 interstate access in Grundy County. We are just sitting dormant.”

Cox would like to see the town give back to the community. He is proud of his role with the Gardner Beautification Committee, which built the gazebo downtown and organized all-town cleanups at no cost to the taxpayers.

There were a few disagreements between dogs, but none of it turned physical. Sources close to the situation said the altercations may have been about fur and smell. The large turnout is a result of Bone-ified Care’s growth, Latta said. It seems to grow each year.

“About a third of the dogs we care for are here today,” she said. “In any given week I personally walk about 40 different dogs.”

Latta was joined by her mom, dad, sister, niece and two assistants from Bone-ified. Love for dogs and other pets is a tradition in Latta’s family.

“I got my first dog at 4 years old,” Latta said. “My love for dogs started with my family.”

One way he can see the community growing is to establish an online presence, which he feels would help promote the community.

He feels the village is not taking full advantage of being an interstate intersection, and they should take advantage of the location to draw in national chain stores.

“We started with 30 vendors

Station Unit 1 offline Maintenance aims to keep unit running safely MORRIS DAILY HERALD BRACEVILLE – Operators removed Braidwood Station Unit 1 from service early Monday morning for a planned refueling outage.

While the unit is offline, skilled technicians will replace nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel and perform thousands of inspections and maintenance activities to keep the unit running safely and effectively for another two years.

Most of this work cannot be performed while the unit is online, according to a news release from the stations.

Refueling outages at Braidwood Station occur every 18 months. The work completed by the more than

1,200 highly trained supplemental workers and 800 permanent employees will ensure Braidwood Station’s ability to continue to provide reliable, carbon-free power to the equivalent of more than 2 million homes.

“When Braidwood has an outage, it isn’t just about the plant. The town benefits, too, because everything in town picks up. From our restaurants to gas stations to our local shops – those supplemental workers provide a significant boost to our economy,” Braidwood Chamber of Commerce President Angie Hutton said in the release.

“The outages have been nothing but a win-win for both Braidwood Station and the community.”

Three new members join Community Foundation board MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Community Foundation of Grundy County has elected three community members as new members of its Board of Trustees: Lois Durkin Darlington, Dr. Ben Johnston and Michael Mattingly. Darlington specializes in tenant representation and lease portfolio management on an international basis and also oversees the real estate holdings of about 80 percent of CME Group members in and around the Chicago Board of Trade Building.

Darlington’s charitable work includes Operation St. Nick. She and her husband, Scott, own Clayton’s Tap in Morris. In 2014 they were honored to be awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Grundy County Chamber

of Commerce & Industry for their local commitment to the community and passion for hosting nonprofit fundraising events. The Darlingtons live in Morris with their daughter.

Dr. Johnston is an emergency medicine physician with the Northwestern Feinburg School of Medicine in Chicago where he initiated a proposal to use physician arbitrage using video telemedicine to reduce wait times. He is an author who also shares his vision for emergency department efficiency through his consulting services.

Johnston received a number of awards while a student at Grinnell College and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He and his wife, Leisa, live in Morris with their two children.

Mattingly is an attorney

with an office in Minooka and a resident of Morris. He attended Illinois State University for both his bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees and then graduated with a law degree from Loyola University of Chicago. He has successfully argued cases at the Illinois appellate and federal levels.

He has been a member of the Illinois State Bar Association Agricultural Law Section since 2007, including the positions of secretary, vice chairman and chairman. His extensive volunteerism includes the I&M Canal Association, Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, Morris Downtown Development Partnership and Minooka Lions Club.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD JOLIET – The March of Dimes has recognized Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s Labor and Delivery Unit for successfully reducing their early elective delivery (EED) rate to zero.

EED is recognized as any delivery less than 39 weeks that is not medically indicated. In 2010 the unit was at a 20 percent EED rate. Nurses and physicians collaborated to reduce St. Joseph’s EED rate below the state benchmark of 5 percent, according to a news release from the hospital.

Reduction of EED is a statewide initiative through the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative and a Joint Commission Core Measure. The department has been working on this quality project for some time.

LaSalle farmer, donation direct funds to Pet Project America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation supports local organization MORRIS DAILY HERALD MARSEILLES – The Pet Project has received a $2,500 donation from LaSalle County farmer Katie Bernard and America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.

The donation will help the organization maintain their facilities to house homeless cats and dogs, according to a news release from the project.

Pet Project Inc. is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter established in 1993.

It has since rescued over 6,000 animals.

With no county animal control agency, volunteers work tirelessly to help find homes for animals.

All money raised goes toward the animals, their medical care, and to providing a roof over their heads until a new home is found.

“I’m an animal lover,” Ber-

nard said. “I know they take all the money and use it to take care of the pets. I’ve heard really good things about the Pet Project and want to help them out.”

For five years, America’s Farmers Grow Communities has collaborated with farmers to donate over $16.5 million to over 7,300 community organizations across rural America.

This year winning farmers will direct another $3.3 million to nonprofits to help fight rural hunger, purchase life saving fire and EMS equipment, support ag youth leadership programs, buy much-needed classroom resources, and more, according to the release.

America’s Farmers Grow Communities is part of the America’s Farmers initiative. Since 2010, the America’s Farmers programs have advocated on behalf of farmers and their efforts to meet society’s needs through agriculture.

OPINION A breakdown of Schock’s breathtaking downfall Congressman Aaron Schock’s resignation is not only a blow to national Republicans, for whom Schock raised millions, but also to Illinois Republicans. Just eight weeks ago, Schock was widely believed to be next in line to chair the National Republican Congressional Committee.

But his rapid fall from grace ruined his career and deprived the NRCC of a chance to project a far more youthful public image.

Needless to say, the Illinois House Republicans are heartbroken by this loss. Schock is a former state House member and he retained quite a bit of personal affection and even admiration by his onetime colleagues and staffers. But it’s the loss of his assistance which will be felt the most.

Schock has been very helpful to the point of being almost indispensable to the House Republicans. He’s helped recruit candidates, raised money for them and helped them campaign.

Ever since he defeated a sitting Democratic Representative in a solidly Democratic district at the age of 23, Schock has been the HGOP’s wonder boy. The Illinois Republicans don’t remember Schock as the jet-setting, rule-shortcutting playboy he became in Washington, D.C. When he was in Springfield, Schock was often traveling back to Peoria after the day’s session ended to meet with constituents. He always was a young man on a mission, and he seemed to fully understand back then that if he wanted to continue his meteoric rise up the political ladder, he had to make sure he always was in tune and in touch with the folks back home. So, what happened here?

Personally interacting with people who literally have money to burn can have an overwhelmingly intoxicating effect, particularly on somebody who has always personally striven to be rich. But that aborted bid for governor forced Schock to rethink his future and focus his sole attention on rising through the congressional ranks. He held a leadership post and looked like he had an eventual straight shot to the very top, but was sidetracked last year when his ally, Majority Leader Eric Cantor unexpectedly lost his primary election. He then set his sights on the NRCC, and the chairmanship was literally within his grasp.

His realization that Congress was the only venue he’d probably ever have for stardom, his single-mindedness about how raising money was his only ticket to the top combined with his personal quest for wealth and his apparent need to emulate the lifestyles of the folks he was raising money from (plus whatever else happened that we don’t know about) all somehow led him to start cutting corners.

And now, Schock is under federal investigation. Hopefully, after this is all over, after he has paid his price (if any), Schock can put those truly amazing skills of his to work again for the people he once clearly loved. He’s only 33 years old. He’ll have plenty of time to redeem himself.

Wildcats’ first game a victory over Morris

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com ROSEMONT – After starting the season with five straight wins against Class 1A and 2A competition, the Morris softball team got a look at one of the area’s most consistent large-school programs Monday at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont.

Plainfield Central, playing its first game of the year, defeated Morris, 5-2, behind the pitching of sophomore Brooklyn Daly and timely hitting.

Morris, meanwhile, played well but came up short.

“It’s good for us to go up against a top 4A school,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said.

“They always go deep into the postseason (three straight regional titles), so for us to hang in there with them all game is pretty good.”

Plainfield Central got on the board first in the second inning. Gretchen Egly led off with a single, then went to second on a wild pitch. A bunt single by Hannah Franceschini put runners on first and third. Franceschini then stole second. On the throw, Morris second baseman Leah Lines slipped on the artificial surface and the ball went into center field, allowing Egly to score and Franceschini to reach third. After a popup to second, Daly delivered a double down the right-field line to score Franceschini for a 2-0 Wildcats lead.

Central then made it 3-0 in the fourth. Jenny Newtoff, Daly and Alex Hasenjager all singled to load the bases. Morris pitcher Abby Burns then got a strikeout, but Megan Muldoon blooped a single over the drawn-in Morris infield to score Newtoff. Burns then induced a groundout that forced a runner at home and a fly to left to escape without further damage.

Morris got on the board in the top of the fifth. With one out, Amanda Jenkins singled and an out later, Lines singled to right to move Jenkins to third, and Ashley Phelps followed with a single to left to score Jenkins and make the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Plainfield Central’s Egly led off with a single to left and Franceschini bounced an infield single off the plate. A sacrifice bunt by Newtoff moved the runners to second and third, and Daly was intentionally walked to load the bases. After an infield popout, Michaela Schlattman hit a groundrule double to left-center that bounced over the fence, scor-

ing both Egly and Franceschini to widen the lead to 5-1.

The Redskins countered with another run in the top of the sixth. Emily Moore led off

with the game’s final run.

Cook, who had two hits for the Redskins, hit an infield single to deep short to load the bases, but Daly got the next batter out to end the inning.

“We were pretty solid all the way around,” Plainfield Central coach Anne Campbell said. “Especially for our first game. We were very solid defensively, and for the first time facing live pitching, we hit the ball well. And Brooklyn did a nice job making pitches on the mound.”

“They played very well,” Petrovic said Saturday after his team dropped an 11-1 nonconference decision to defending Class 4A state champion Providence. “Their pitcher (Justin Hunniford) did a good job hitting corners and keeping the ball down in the zone, and they hit the ball well.”

Hunniford worked five innings, allowing one run on three hits, two of which were to the first two hitters. After Jake Null’s bunt single and

Cole Thompson’s single to right-center, Jon Vesper hit a shot to shortstop Mike Made, who started a 6-4-3 double play.

A run scored to give Minooka (0-2) a quick 1-0 lead, but momentum turned.

“Jon hit that ball right on the button,” Petrovic said. “We got a run there, but the double play does kill the momentum.

It was a big turning point for them early.”

The Celtics (2-0) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, another in the second and they put it away with a sixrun fourth.

He finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Minooka closed with four hits, including Tyler Paulsen’s double off the fence and a Vesper single.

And Cristian Sanchez, who does not play on Saturdays for religious reasons, is nursing a strained groin.

“That’s our two best all-

around players,” Petrovic said. “It’s a lot to overcome.”

Miguel Ruiz started and went three innings for the Indians, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks.

Nick Petrak was first in out of the pen. He lasted two-thirds of an inning and allowed six runs – four earned – on four hits and two walks. Tyler Fitzgerald pitched two innings and allowed two runs on five hits, walked nobody and struck out two, the only two whiffs of the day for Indians pitchers.

Nobody had more than one hit for the Indians, and Paulsen’s double was the only extra-base hit.

Emmet Chouinard (1-0) went four innings, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out four. Colton Akre threw the fifth inning, allowing one hit and fanning two. Neither pitcher allowed a walk. Morris scored seven runs in the second inning, five in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Tyler Border went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs to lead the offense, while Matt Walker was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Tom Cheshareck went 2 for 4.

“It was a nice way to start the weekend,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “After a sluggish first inning offensively, we came out swinging in the second and put the ball in play hard. That, combined with Emmet’s steady performance on the mound, kept us in control for the rest of the game.”

BLOOMINGTON – The top track and field talent in the state gathered over the weekend at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center for the Illinois Top Times indoor meet.

Minooka’s Peter Andreano delivered the area’s best showing, finishing second in both the long jump (21-71⁄2) and the high jump (6-6) in the Class 3A meet. The Indians’ 800-meter relay team of Mitch Miller, Victor Turpin, Maceo Findlay and Brandon Adams was third with a time of 1:32.64, while the 1,600 team of Mke Malinowski, Aaron Arroyo, Nolan Barajas and Justin Wolz was fourth in 3:27.56.

Also competing for Minooka at the meet were Quintin Durov in the high jump (tied for 8th, 6-0), Ryan Pullara in the pole vault (8th, 14-0), Gabe Ceballos in the 3,200-meter run (10th, 9:44.70), the 3,200-meter relay team of Jack Sullivan, Jake Swank, Ben Ubert and Michael Bozue (11th, 8:29.21), Wolz in the 400-meter dash (12th, 52.24) and in the 60-meter hurdles (14th, 8.73).

“We had another outstanding showing,” Minooka coach Nick Lundin said. “Peter An-

dreano has qualified all four years for the meet, and went out with a bang, placing second in both events. He looks as determined as ever right now and is setting himself up for a nice outdoor season. The 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams looked great running out of the second fastest section. Both teams beat teams that ran in the ‘fast’ sections and they looked good.

Gabe Ceballos qualified for the 3,200 for the second straight year. He was focused and set a personal record by nine seconds.”

In the girls Class 3A meet, Minooka’s Ashleigh Wilson finished second in the 400-meter dash with an indoor school record time of 57.57. She was also part of the 3,200 relay team, along with Morgan Crouch, Emily Shelton and Mackenzie Callahan, that finished fourth in 9:41.67 and took fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.83, also a new indoor school record. Ashley Tutt set a new indoor school record in the 3,200-meter run with her time of 11:08.47, which earned her a sixth-place finish.

“This was a great way to end the indoor season,” Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson said. “Ashleigh Wilson had a tremendous day and she was

getting stronger as the meet went on. I am excited about the potential of this group and can’t wait for the outdoor season to get started.”

In Class 2A, Morris’ Jacob Wantland finished ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.29.

In Class 1A, Seneca’s Ross McCormick took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.20, and finished fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:35.90.

Minooka 7, East Aurora 0: Hailey Arlis had a hat trick for the Indians (3-0), while Hannah Rieker scored twice and Julianna Scarcelli and Ali Motsch each scored once. Assists came from Arlis, Scarcelli, Maggie Ward, Sydney Arlis, Vanessa Ramos, Montana Spence and Lauren Watts.

And like Bryant, Rodon will begin the season at AAA. Beyond Bryant being a slugger and Rodon a pitcher, the cases of Chicago’s top first-round draft picks are not the same, though. Granted, there are service time issues with both, but Rodon has fewer than 25 innings of minor league work and the White Sox’ case that he needs more of it to become the polished star the Sox believe he will be

The Sox open in Kansas City on Monday.

“Whatever it is they need me to do and whatever it is they want to see so I can be in a position to pitch for them, so be it,” Rodon said Monday. “If

“I’m going to be up there eventually. Just being comfortable with the opponents and my teammates (was valuable). It was just an overall fun experience. I havent pitched a big league inning yet, and when that time comes we’ll see if I really belong.”

In this grand slam, South starts with 12 top tricks: seven spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. There are two places to go for the extra winner. Where are they?

How should South play after West leads the heart queen?

I strongly approve of North’s three-diamond response, showing his good five-card suit and at least eight points.

This way, both players know it is (almost certainly) a slam deal.

South’s final bid is a gamble because he does not know where the club queen will go. However, he can anticipate the grand will be at worst on a finesse.

After West leads the heart queen, South should realize that he will make his contract if the club finesse works or the diamonds break 4-4. He should try the diamond option first.

So, after taking the first trick, declarer plays a trump to dummy’s seven, ruffs a low diamond with the spade jack, crosses back to dummy with a trump to the eight, ruffs high a second low diamond, and draws East’s last trump by leading his nine to dummy’s 10. Now South cashes the diamond ace-king, discarding his two low clubs.

Are the diamonds 4-4? If so, declarer throws the club queen on the 13th diamond. If not, he takes the club finesse. Altogether, the odds of success are an acceptable 66.38 percent.

Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis is a bone-weakening condition that increases your risk of fractures. Though your bones may seem unchanging, they are continuously being broken down and rebuilt. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Osteoporosis occurs when more bone is broken down than is rebuilt.

Osteoporosis is most common in postmenopausal women, but other people are also at risk. These include people with thyroid problems or eating disorders, and those who have used oral corticosteroid medi-

Some foods you eat can make you more likely to get osteoporosis. On the other hand, some foods can reduce your risk.

There is evidence that several common food substances, taken in large amounts, may be harmful to bone health. I wouldn’t call the evidence airtight, but it is strong enough that I’d advise anyone at risk for osteoporosis to limit their intake of these substances: • CAFFEINE. Drinking four or more cups of coffee a day can

increase your risk of breaking a bone. The evidence is pretty strong. So, you may want to forgo that fourth cup.

• PROTEIN. High levels of protein, particularly protein from animal sources, may cause bones to lose calcium. This issue is still being investigated, and there is no consensus on how much, if any, protein may be harmful to bones. For now, I wouldn’t worry about protein harming your bones.

Of course, as we’ve said here many times, the saturated fats that come with animal protein are not heart-healthy, so they should be eaten sparingly.

• ALCOHOL. People who consume more than two drinks per day may be at moderately higher risk of low bone density

and fractures, compared with nondrinkers. On the other hand, some studies have found that moderate drinkers – men who have one or two drinks per day, and women who have one drink per day – have greater bone mass.

• VITAMIN A. Several studies have found a link between high vitamin A intake and fractures. Try not to exceed the current recommended daily amount of vitamin A, which is 700 micrograms (mcg) for women and 900 mcg for men.

As for the foods that help build bone, there are several: • CALCIUM is the primary building block of bone. It is found in dairy products, spinach, dried beans, nuts, and fortified juices and cereals.

• VITAMIN D. Vitamin D helps raise calcium levels in the blood and helps calcium get into bone. Vitamin D is found in eggs, certain fish and liver.

Many people also benefit from taking a vitamin D supplement.

• VITAMIN K helps blood clot, and (like vitamin D) also helps calcium get into bone. It is found in spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, scallions, asparagus, cabbage and certain herbs.

Fortunately, a diet that protects bone health also tends to be healthy for the heart.
