Winifred G. La Tour (Kiesling), age 90, of Homer Glen, passed away Monday, March 16th, 2015, at her home in Homer Glen.

Winifred is survived by her loving family, children, Jamie (David) Packley, Robert (Susan) La Tour Jr., Rande (Steve) Grabowski, Marti La Tour, John (Lois) La Tour; siblings, Gloria Pontizous, Ruth Metz; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, Walter & Agnes Kiesling (Arnolde); husband, Robert La Tour Sr.; and sister, Dorothy Sobinsky.

Winifred was a long time member and Deacon at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lockport. Winifred was a member and the former President of the following organizations; Spring Creek Community Club, Creek Side Garden Club and Kings Daughters.

She was also a member of the Church Woman’s Association, the Red Hat Society and delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program.

Family will receive friends at Goodale Memorial Chapel, 912 S. Hamilton Street, Lockport, IL 60441 on Monday, March 30th, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lockport would be appreciated.

Ronald D. Thompson, age 73, of Newark, passed away Thursday morning, March 26, 2015, at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 10:30 a.m., at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Rev. Avery Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in West Lisbon Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born November 16, 1941 in Morris, he was the son of I. Harold and Ora (Sampson)Thompson.

He attended Newark High School.

Ron married Carol Coultrip in 1975, and she preceded him in death in 2005. He then married Kay Harlow Tummel on March 31, 2014. For several years, he was employed as a truck driver for Van Guard Trucking.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kay of Newark; three daughters, Kimberly (Trent) Stevens of Centerton, AK, Kelly (Douglas) Beasley of Morris and Karyn(Dennis) Tennant of Fort Collins, CO; one son, Tim (Tammy) Thompson of Richmond, KY; five grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents. He was a member of the West Lisbon Church. Ron enjoyed his two pet cats and was fond of John Deere Equipment.

Sergeants Henderson, Sager are retiring after decades of service

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris police Sgts. Scott Henderson and Gregg Sager are retiring weeks apart, taking with them a combined 54 years of fulltime police service.

“When an officer has been here that long they have a well-rounded knowledge of the job,” Police Chief Brent Dite said at Henderson’s retirement celebration Thursday.

“They are a bridge to older officers, they can teach new officers the history and nature of Morris, what it was back when they started to what it is now.”

Henderson clocked out at 1 p.m. Thursday, signaling his final shift wearing an active Morris police badge. That badge was then replaced with a retired badge that he will continue to carry in his pocket as a reminder of the 30 years he put into protecting and serving the residents of Morris.

“I moved to Morris in high school. It was about that time that I decided I wanted to pursue a career with the police,” Henderson said. “I like to interact with people. Serving the community was refreshing.”

Henderson said as a young Morris Community High School student he wasn’t very tall and was lucky to have friends who looked out for him. “Being in law enforcement helps me to look out for others the way my friends looked out for me,” he said.

He said the highlight of his career was when he started as a part-time officer in 1984 and was hired full time in 1985.

He spent time as a parttime dispatcher, a patrolman, an investigator, and spent the second half of his career as a sergeant. Work in the police department changed as he went from working as a patrolman where he worked set

The streets were where he enjoyed being a police officer.

“I came back to the streets because they needed a sergeant. I enjoy it back on the streets,” he said. “After being an investigator I look at things differently.”

Sager worked for nine years for the city in parking enforcement and as a dispatcher before he was hired full time as a patrolman in February 1991.

He is the son of a Morris policeman and always thought about going into law enforcement himself. He has served as a patrolman, detective and as a patrol sergeant.

“Being a sergeant was my favorite position,” he said Thursday. “I enjoy supervising a shift.”

Dite said Sager brings a lot of knowledge and common sense to the department.

“Gregg is the go-to guy when you need to make a good decision,” Dite said.

As with any job, the position of police officer comes with stress. For Henderson and Sager, it was just part of the job. Both recall having to respond to murder scenes and the scene of an accident where sometimes they knew the person involved. They both said moments like those are the ones they will never forget.

“I still think about it now and then,” Sager said. “With

Henderson recalls leaving a murder scene that was very stressful.

“I asked myself ‘Is this what I want to do?’ and I finished and said ‘Yes, I still want to do this,’ ” Henderson said. “In all, it was a good 30 years.”

Sager will work his last shift April 2 and the department will hold a celebration for his retirement from 1 to 3 p.m. April 30 at the Morris Municipal Services Facility.

The police department has been preparing for their departure, Dite said. Successors

have been training to step into the open positions.

Detective Alicia Steffes will be promoted to sergeant April 6 and detective Eric Werden will be promoted to sergeant April 13.

“It’s very important to us that our staff train the next person to do the job better, teach them how to do their job when they aren’t around,” Dite said. “It’s a huge compliment when they aren’t here Photo submitted and it runs the same as when Sgt. Gregg Sager will retire in they are here.”

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Educators and local parents clinched hands and showed nervous faces as they anxiously awaited the decision made Wednesday by the Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 board regarding full-day kindergarten.

It was a decision kindergarten teachers and some parents have long waited for, and when the board approved full-day kindergarten beginning with the 2015-16 school year, cheers, yelps, screams and tears filled the room.

When the family moved to Minooka, only half-days were offered.

“It shows in the education, now, of my kids who were in a

district that offered full-day as opposed to my daughter, who only had part time. I also think all-day class allows teachers to have ‘fluff room’ to deal with issues that come up during the day, such as a child being sick, or having to use the bathroom, or needing special attention,”

Brophy told the board.

District Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said he believes the school district will see an influx in kindergarten registration this spring.

“I know many parents who send their kids to private allday kindergarten because it’s not offered in the schools. We believe we will see growth due to this change,” Gegenheimer said.

The board agreed to start with the hiring of nine kindergarten teachers for the district, with the possibility of adding more depending on the enrollment numbers.

Gegenheimer noted the district sees an influx of enrollment in the summer, which creates the need to hire more help as the new academic year approaches.

“April 24 is the kindergarten round-up. We need to encourage our parents to come and register the kids earlier, so the district can get an idea of the number of teachers to hire,” board member Vicki Al-

len said.

There are a couple of loose ends that still are on the negotiation table.

The district still is required, by law, to offer half-day kindergarten. And the time allday kindergarten would be released each day has not been set. The board will decide on a specific release time at a later meeting.

If the students are released earlier than the other grades, the children will not receive physical education, art or music.

Retired Minooka kindergarten teacher, Linda Walter, spoke to the board on the importance of these programs.

“Fine arts are important because music promotes math skills; they need physical education because they have less time at home to run around.

When they are in these fine arts classes, they don’t even know they are getting professional instruction. They are having fun. It’s motivating,” Walters said.

Minooka 201 superintendent to retire this school year

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Superintendent Al Gegenheimer of Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 will retire from the district at the end of this school year.

The school board approved Wednesday his retirement after a closed session, Gegenheimer said Thursday morning.

Al Board of Ed- Gegenheimer ucation President Jim Satorius said Thursday the board had to go into a closed session to reconstruct a new retirement agreement and general release.

Gegenheimer is leaving his position a year earlier than his

original contract allowed. He said he asked for an “unconditional release,” which allows him to retire a year earlier.

Gegenheimer said his reason for leaving was a personal choice, citing time for his wife, children and granddaughter, the biggest motivating factor.

“I’ve been a school administrator for over 25 years, and it takes a lot of time away from my family. Even when I taught school, I was busy coaching everything I could, and now it is just time to spend time with my family,” Gegenheimer said.

In November the school board approved a letter of reprimand to Gegenheimer, responding to allegations of unprofessional conduct.

Gegenheimer said a superintendent always is going to have problems. He said he’s

been accused of saying bad things toward people, but added that those who know him best know he’s not like that, and that is not a reason for leaving.

“No, he was not asked to leave and I would have vot-

ed against it if that were the case,” Satorius said.

The board president said that in the eight years Gegenheimer was superintendent and the business manager, he saved the district about $32 million, as well as receiving

JJC proposes balanced budget Rezin supports

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College officials say they continue to be fiscally conservative in the college’s latest budget proposal.

Next week at a JJC board workshop meeting, trustees can ask questions about the budget before public comment and budget adoption in April, said Judy Mitchell, vice president of JJC Administrative Services.

The budget for fiscal 2016, which begins June 30, projects no increases in tuition or enrollment, she said.

“We’re taking a conservative approach in order to be fiscally responsible,” Mitchell said.

She said the budget is projected to be balanced, with revenues and expenses at roughly $87 million. College officials said last year’s budget was balanced, as it has been for the past 42 years, but no enrollment growth was expected in 2015.

The college will reallocate existing resources to pay for any new initiatives and will not ask for new money, Mitchell said.

The budget also projected no increase in health costs, she said.

Even though the college will again have flat enrollment, the college continues to work on recruiting and retaining students, she said.

“The college continues to support our students and identify ways to increase retention,” Mitchell said. “A focus this year is retention … student retention did go up in the past year. That was positive.”

The budget includes “realistic projections” for property taxes, with a 2.3 percent increase, she said.

Earlier this month, JJC Board members approved putting the fiscal 2016 budget on public display. Mitchell said the budget is only at the draft stage at this point until the board considers it for final approval in April.

JJC Board President Andrew Mihelich said Thursday he was pleased with the budget, as it had no tuition increases.

The college has met all contract obligations and made “tremendous strides” in lowering health care costs, he said.

“We’re pleased the initial indications coming out of Springfield is that state revenue to community colleges will be stable,” he said.

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget called for no reductions in state funding to community colleges, which many officials with JJC and the Illinois Community College Board commended.

ICCB officials have said state funding for community colleges decreased annually from $316 million in 2010 to $283 million this year.

“We anticipated a decrease in state revenue, so we don’t know how that will hold true going through, but we’re starting off good,” Mihelich said.

Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, voted in support of the budget fix – a vote she called “necessary” given the state’s current fiscal mess.

“For the first time in more than a decade, we have a balanced budget in Springfield,” Rezin said in the release. “Gov. Bruce Rauner inherited a completely out-of-whack budget when he took office; however, working together in a bipartisan fashion, we did what was necessary to solve the first

chapter of our state’s budget mess. We wouldn’t have solved this immediate budget crisis without Governor Rauner’s leadership.”

Rezin said funding for areas like childcare, court reporters, and corrections would have had severe funding shortfalls without this legislation.

“I had many constituents talk to me or call my office concerned about funding for certain programs, especially childcare,” Rezin said in the release. “Hearing those concerns, I am pleased lawmakers did the right thing, taking action to save these vital services and protect jobs.”

Rezin said funding for local governments remains intact.

There are also exemptions for funding for developmentally disabled, mental health and autism programs.

DEVOTIONS Council of Catholic Women will be on Sunday at Living Water Church of the Nazarene. honors Dorothy Jenkins CHANNAHON – Dorothy Jenkins of Channahon has been named the 2015 Woman of the Year by the St. Ann Council of Catholic Women.

Jenkins and Judy Rohman of Minooka, the 2014-15 St. Ann CCW president, will be honored at a Mass celebrated by Bishop Joseph Siegel at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet on April 18, along with their counter parts from throughout the Deaneries of the Diocese.

Jenkin’s gentleness is deceiving.

She shares her many talents and helps wherever she is needed.

Her numerous activities include: cleaning the church; serving as extraordinary eucharistic minister, parish collection counter, and funeral mass assistant; serving on the Peace and Social Justice Committee, as well as the Worship Commission; CCW Mothers Day flower sales; working miscellaneous parish dinners and parish picnics; maintaining church flowers and plants; funeral luncheons and fish fry worker; Prayer Tree member, and assistant in the CCW Bunco Party.

She also puts her creative talents to work with her bakery provided for funeral luncheons and Lenten fish fries, as well as design and sewing skills used to create The Year of the Eucharist Banners for display in St. Ann Church.

Morris cruises to victory over Coal City

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After winning two straight regionals, the Morris girls soccer team is looking for a little more this season. So far, it seems to be on the right track.

On Saturday, the Redskins played Herscher, a team they had tied in each of the previous two seasons, and beat the Tigers, 5-0.

On Thursday, they took on Coal City, which advanced to a Class 1A sectional final last season.

Morris, led by captains Emily Burling (senior), Katherine Gallick (senior), Amanda Grant (junior) and Emma Dingbaum (junior), defeated Coal City 5-0. Burling scored the first two goals for the Redskins (2-0), while sophomore Kelly Monk had two goals and Alexa Rain scored one. Grant had a pair of assists.

“We are doing a lot better so far this year,” Burling said.

“We are super excited for this season. We are so cohesive. We are communicating well on the field and hitting our passes.

“It’s such a good group of girls. Everyone is supportive of each other. We don’t care who scores. It’s not one girl out there, it’s 11 girls out there playing as one.”

Burling got the scoring started at the 27:58 mark from an assist by Mya Shannon, then scored again with 14:45 to go until halftime off an assist from Grant.

Monk added a goal with 8:14 remaining to give Morris a 3-0 lead, which it took into halftime.

Early in the second half, after a corner kick by Morris and a scramble in front of the net, Rain poked the ball into the net for a 4-0 Redskins lead.

Monk finished the scoring with an assist from Grant with 28:23 to play.

“The girls looked good,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said. “Summer Shaw got hurt last game and the girls were a little freaked out with the way we re-arranged the defense.

For about the first 10 minutes, we were a little panicky. But,

“Amanda Grant had two nice assists. She is playing in the middle and doesn’t feel like she’s doing anything, but she does everything. She does a good job of seeing the field and passing. It was nice to see sophomore Kelly Monk get a couple of goals and freshman Mya Shannon did a great job at midfield.”

Coal City coach Michael Kostbade said he thought his team played much better after halftime.

“Morris was very fast and organized on offense,” he said. “We had some adjusting to do, and I was very pleased with our second-half effort.

We finished strong. We got a nice save and made a nice run at scoring in the last minute.

These girls never put their heads down, and that was nice to see.”

As far as the season goes, Porter believes the Redskins could have something special.

“We are feeling really good about how this group of girls

are meshing together,” she said. “Due to loss of seniors, we have a brand new starting defense. Senior Alexis Halcomb, senior Amber Misek, junior Emma Dingbaum, and junior Summer Shaw have taken those starting defender spots and are doing a great job remaining disciplined, controlled and aggressive. They did a great job in our first showing this year, although Shaw went down in the first half with an ankle injury.

Freshman defender Mya Shannon and Paige Valentine along with junior Grace Tibbott will be sharing the job of filling in until Shaw is ready to get back on the field. Those three defenders are going to see a lot of time this year. Junior Maren Bashor will be our starting goalkeeper for her second year in a row. She has perfected her timing and improved her kicking from last year.

“As of now, our starting forwards are senior captain Emily Burling and sophomore Kelly Monk. Burling is a threeyear starter who had four

goals and one assist last year.

This year, she already has four goals and one assist. She does a great job as a captain by motivating and leading the other girls. Monk is very aggressive and does a great job putting the ball on frame. Juniors Brooklyn Enger, Addison Polite and Holly French will also be seeing playing time as forwards this year.

“Our starting midfielders consist of senior captain Katherine Gallick, junior captain Amanda Grant, junior Alexa Rain and sophomore Casi Valdes. Gallick scored four goals last year and anchors our midfield with her experience and understanding of the game.

She is an all-around player for us. Grant is also a three-year starter who accounted for 13 goals and two assists last season. This year, she has already accounted for one goal and five assists. We are expecting Grant to not only double her number of goals scored this year, but also assist the two forwards Burling and Monk.

She has great footwork, quick-

ness and talent. She is a great leader on the field.

“Rain is one of our outside midfielders who does a great job of crossing the ball and creating scoring opportunities.

Last year she had six goals and four assists. Valdes is the other starting outside midfielder.

She has great footwork and quickness and she, too, does a great job of crossing the ball with her left foot, creating scoring opportunities. Rotating with our midfielders will be senior Dorissa Gutierrez, senior Bryn Taylor, junior Mikaela Marino, junior Hannah Chelino and freshman Amanda Schmidt. Gutierrez has had some great crosses in our first showing against Herscher and will be getting a lot of time on the field this year.

“Last year our overall record was 8-8-1, ending our season in the sectional semifinal.

We really feel that this is our year to go further. We have a lot of skilled, healthy players this year. If we can keep them healthy, then we are going to go far.”

I sat in my recliner the other day, flipping through a million TV channels, looking for something to watch. I settled on a spring training baseball game in Arizona. The people at the game sported shorts, T-shirts and sandals. Smiles covered everyone’s face. That typical warm weather activity got me to thinking: what is going to be the first thing that you do this spring?

When the outside conditions are just perfect, you have the time free, and all the stars and planets align just perfectly so there are no distractions, what is it that you are going to choose to do outdoors? I have no doubt that millions of Americans will get to enjoy that nice walk that has eluded them for many winter months. Taking an evening stroll and maybe walking a dog

is quite relaxing.

It can be a distraction-free time when people actually talk as opposed to hover endlessly over some sort of electronic device. Nice walks are universal. People enjoy them. I know a good walk is the first choice on my wife’s list of outdoor activities. In fact, now that I think about it, she never has asked me if I wanted to go turkey hunting instead. Hmmm. Besides the walkers, there are many who are thinking about that first glorious bike ride. Several Mondays ago, when the temperatures touched 70, the bicycles hit the streets by the thousands. So many of our communities now have nice bike paths that makes pedaling away your concerns a great option.

It always makes me smile when I see a mom, dad and a

Others are looking to hit the water. My youngest son is stuck to me like a tick on a coon dog constantly asking about getting the boat ready. In fact, even before all the ice receded off our bay, he was fishing. He is ready. His pole is set, lure tied on, tackle chosen and spirits inflated. He even practices tying the palomar knot a few times just to make sure he remembered how. Now that is being excited for warm weather.

on the brain. Even though he is injured at the moment, he talks about it constantly. He tells me about the latest things going on across the MLB, we talk about how the White Sox might do this season, he even creates his own roster on his favorite baseball video game and tells me how his team is doing. Spring for him equates to baseball.

What I am going to do outside? I hate to say it, but my first post-winter activity involved a five-gallon bucket and a pooper scooper. Yep. The remnants of many winter dog bombs fall to dad to take care of. And I must say, with all the fresh layers of snow we had this year, I failed to recognize just how many little presents waited for me after the final thaw.

With that horrible warm-weather chore over, I

do believe that right after my first fishing excursion, I will do battle with weeds in the yard.

I don’t know if it is my age or what, but every year that goes by makes me want my lawn to look better. Those dandelions and crabgrass bunches give me nightmares. I actually thought about getting the sprayer ready and smiled at the thought of launching a pre-emptive strike.

I know, pretty sad.

No matter what your first outdoor activity is, I’m sure you will enjoy it. It has been a long time coming. Just take a moment to look to the sky, feel those warm rays and be thankful for a warmer time of year.

Morris improves in 3-1 win over Minooka STAFF REPORTS MINOOKA — When you put the ball in play, you are dangerous.

The Morris baseball team proved that Thursday in a 7-5 win over neighborhood rival Minooka. The Redskins managed only five hits in the contest, but took advantage of Minooka’s errors to score seven runs.

All of the runs for the Redskins (3-1) came in the second inning. Tom Cheshareck led off by reaching on an error. A walk to Chase Hansen and an infield single by Cody Niewinski loaded the bases.

Emmet Chouinard was hit by a pitch to force in Cheshareck with the first run. An out later, Kendall Enger reached on an error, scoring Hansen.

Matt Walker then delivered an RBI single to plate Niewinski, and Jake McDonald singled to bring in Chouinard.

Tyler Bordner got an RBI on a groundout to short, plating Enger. Cheshareck walked and Hansen reached on an error to score Walker. Niewinski was hit by a pitch to score McDonald with the seventh run.

“We put the ball in play,” Morris coach Todd Kein said.

“And, we got hits with guys on

We know it’s going to be a good game against a high level of competition. Since it’s so close, it’s a win-win for us.”

Walker got the win, pitching three shutout innings. He gave up one hit and walked two while striking out two.

For Minooka (0-1), Christian Sanchez had two hits, as did Clay Thompson, Brandon Rissiter and Pat Ramsey each had two RBIs.

BASEBALL

Coal City 14, Pontiac 3: The Coalers pounded out 10 hits in their season-opening win Wednesday. Winning pitcher Brad Littleton was 3 for 4 at the plate, while D.J. Budde and Joe Quinn were each 2 for 4.

Budde scored three runs. On the mound, Littleton struck out five in 32⁄3 innings, while Jared Skubic fanned two in 11⁄3 innings.

Despite McDonald, Bears improving Have we all had a chance to take a few deep breaths and calm down?

I ask because, with the controversy surrounding the Bears signing of defensive end Ray McDonald aside, they actually have had a really good free agency period when you put it in the proper context.

But it doesn’t seem anybody’s focusing on the facts.

I am not – and we should not – belittle the importance of the issues surrounding McDonald.

Having done additional research in the past 36 hours, I am actually more convinced of the likelihood of his innocence rather than guilt of the accusations against him of felony domestic violence by a first accuser and rape by a second.

I could be wrong, and I’m going to be terribly disappointed in myself and even more disappointed in the McCaskeys, Ryan Pace and Vic Fangio if we are.

That said, I absolutely have no desire or intent to serve as public defender or cheerleader for McDonald. I encourage you to do your own research, your own thinking and come to your own conclusions based on what actually is known about these incidents.

There is one additional point, however, that I haven’t heard anywhere.

Vic Fangio still wants to be a head coach in the NFL. He wanted the 49ers job and didn’t get it. I think the 49ers’ mistake is the Bears’ good fortune.

More than anyone else’s, McDonald is Fangio’s signing.

If this goes south and McDonald proves to be a serial abuser, Fangio’s NFL head coaching dreams are over.

McDonald isn’t an MVP candidate or an All Pro, he’s just a nice fit in Fangio’s scheme.

Fangio’s been McDonald’s coach the past four seasons.

None is the answer by himself, but all are part of the equation.

Pace has done exactly what he promised, using free agency to give himself a ton of flexibility to draft the best football players available.

Before even getting to the draft, the Bears clearly are a better team than they were when he arrived.

The Bears moves to date have nothing to do with overrating or overestimating anything, they are about developing a plan and working it, and what I’ve seen so far works for me.

Bears eye ‘big jump’ from Jared Allen in 2015

Allen received his $11.5 million roster bonus for the 2015 season, which was guaranteed at signing, earlier this month.

and share some ideas,” Fox said. “He’ll get that opportunity to compete, and he can be one of those guys who makes a big jump.”

A big jump might seem like crazy thinking when it comes to Allen, who turns 33 in a week and will get a look at 3-4 outside linebacker after 11 productive seasons at right defensive end.

But Pace and Fox are keeping an open mind with Allen, and there’s a sense that he might be a significant contributor.

Pace, for one, had a positive evaluation of Allen when he was a free agent a year ago.

Pace and Fox also have taken into account Allen’s bout with pneumonia and his subsequent weight loss last season.

Allen missed Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers but returned the next week against the Carolina Panthers and played 89 percent of the defensive plays.

But Allen said it took him weeks to feel normal again.

Allen often has said that he’d

retire when he thinks he can no longer be a factor.

Pace said it’s too early to tell how much Allen’s skills have diminished with age.

“It’s hard,” Pace said.

“When these players get older, it’s hard to know when they’re really reaching that point. I’ll know more when I see him live in person.

“But I liked him in free agency last year. I know last year he didn’t have the production that he wanted, but, again, we’re looking forward to going forward. We’ll see in

Holy Week 2015 and its high-tech traps It would be hard to live closer to the belly of the hightech beast than Menlo Park in Northern California’s Silicon Valley. Close to Stanford University? Check. A highway exchange or two from the Apple mothership? Check.

Not that far from the Googleplex? Check.

It’s the kind of home base from which an Opus Dei (“Work of God”) priest can lecture, as Father C. John McCloskey recently quipped, to “300 actual and would-be Techies and Masters of the Universe.”

“One thing we stress during Lent is a sense of detachment from the things of this world,” said McCloskey, an apologist and evangelist in Washington, D.C., and Chicago before this West Coast move. “We even do this with good things, if they’ve become temptations. It can be a kind of food or it can be alcohol. It can be other good things, like running and being obsessed with your health. ... But if you can’t be happy living without something, then that tells you something. It tells you that this thing is using you, rather than you using it.”

In this case, McCloskey is talking about his trusty Apple laptop and iPhone. After all, there is a smartphone app he often uses to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and his computer is crucial to his writing and long-distance teaching.

Everyone is silent, hunched over cellphones. A familiar picture? Yes, but families can break the pattern this summer – at least for a week or two – by taking a digital-free summer vacation.

With spring break in the rearview, what better time to think ahead about an e-free time, either together or apart? While adults usually seek assurance that Wi-Fi is available before booking a hotel or vacation, some are realizing that what seemed an essential on a business trip has become a distraction on a family vacation. Some are even willing to pay to become unplugged.

Do kids object? Sure. They may be horrified by the concept of a device detox. Teens 13-17 spent four hours a day online in 2014, a 37 percent rise over 2012, research firm GfK reports. Parents, increas-

ingly frustrated by their kids’ online dependence, are growing more concerned about their own technology habits.

In the halls of Congress, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., recently made a splash by admitting he’d never sent an email. (How is that possible?) But that put him in the minority.

Unplugging is hard. It requires adults to disconnect from work; many are unable or unwilling to do so. Or they may be Facebook junkies, hooked on posting photos and sharing experiences in real time. Who knows? That family so engrossed in their cellphones while waiting for their restaurant meal might discover that by disconnecting from their phones they’ll find a new way of reconnecting with each other, not to mention tips for more polite use of electronics in public.

Sherlock Holmes said, “I never guess. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”

That might be true when investigating a murder, but is not necessarily so at the bridge table. Sometimes one does have to guess.

Take today’s deal for example.

South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king. What should South do?

After West opened one heart, East knew that he and his partner had a combined holding of at least 10 trumps. Applying the main conclusion from the Law of Total Tricks, he jumped to four hearts. Under pressure, South overcalled four spades, hoping for some support in the dummy.

In four spades, with this layout, if South ruffs the second heart, he can be defeated by careful defense.

Declarer will start to draw trumps, but when he sees the 4-1 break, he will be forced to switch to clubs. (If South draws all of the trumps, EastWest will run their hearts when in with the club ace.) But when declarer does lead clubs, West ducks the first round and notes his partner’s nine, the start of a high-low with a doubleton. West takes the second club and gives his partner a club ruff. Then, in the fullness of time, the defenders collect a diamond trick for down one.

Instead, South mustn’t ruff the second heart – he must discard his unavoidable diamond loser. Then the deal is under control, and the contract makes. It is a textbook loser-on-loser play. ******

Parents should take their child’s eczema seriously Dear Dr. K: I took my son to the doctor because he was constantly scratching his legs. The doctor says it’s eczema. Is that just a fancy word for dry skin?

Dear Reader: Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is more than dry skin. It is an allergic skin condition that can make a child miserable.

Treatment can usually help control the condition and ease its symptoms.

Eczema can look different in different children. It can be bumpy or scaly, with small or big patches. The amount of redness also varies. Dry, scaling skin usually occurs along with it.

Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report with the most

They made some recommendations for treatment and for preventing possible complications such as skin infections.

• Take good care of the skin.

Children with eczema should not bathe too often because this dries out the skin. Ask your son’s doctor how often he should bathe. However often, the baths should be short and lukewarm, not hot. The soap should be mild, without

perfume.

The most important maintenance, though, is using an ointment-type moisturizer all over the body at least once a day. Twice or more each day is even better. In my experience, some parents don’t really take this advice seriously.

I’m not a pediatrician, but sometimes my patients ask for advice about their kids’ health problems. I recall once telling a patient to cover her daughter with moisturizer at least once a day. The patient replied, “My daughter doesn’t need to look like a movie star.”

I explained the goal was to keep her daughter from itching, and having other kids make fun of her rash.

• Use creams and ointments

to stop the inflammation. Moisturizers may not be enough.

Your child’s doctor may prescribe a cream or ointment containing a mild- or medium-strength steroid to apply to the skin. Steroids are very effective, but it’s important not to overuse them. That can lead to thinning of the skin and other side effects.

• Control the itch. When kids scratch, it makes eczema worse. Moisturizing sometimes helps. Medicines can make a difference, too. Your doctor can help you choose the best medicine for your child. These may include stronger steroids or antihistamines.

• Prevent and treat any skin infections. Skin infections are common in people with ecze-

ma, and they, too, can make things worse. It’s important to call the doctor anytime the redness of eczema increases, or you see new crusting or drainage. That may be a sign of infection. Diluted bleach baths (putting a little bit of bleach in a big tub of water) a couple of times a week can help kill germs and keep the skin healthier.

It’s easy for parents not to take eczema seriously. Don’t be one of them. Kids can be traumatized by eczema if it’s not properly diagnosed and treated.
