Born: Nov. 27, 1936; in Danway, IL Died: March 25, 2015; in Marseilles, IL Joyce E. Bentz, age 78, of Marseilles, formerly of Seneca, passed away Wednesday March 25, 2015, at Rivershores HealthCare and Rehabilitation Centre.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 28, 2015, at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home, with Rev. Duane Kaufman officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Friday, and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery.

She was born November 27, 1936, in Danway, Illinois, to Herbert and Junie (Boltman) Applebee. In 1956, she married Richard L. Bentz of Seneca, who preceded her in death in 1987.

Joyce was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Seneca. She graduated from Marseilles High School in 1955. She was a florist and owned and operated Bentz Flowers in Seneca, with her husband, for many years.

She was a loving grandmother and loved to bake and share her cookies with friends and neighbors.

Joyce is survived by three sons, Mark (Karen) of Littleton, CO, Lloyd (Emily) of Mazon, and Matt (Colleen) of Pella, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Peter (Logan) Bentz, Sarah Bentz, Aaron (Mariah) Bentz, and Caleb, Ethan, Andrew and Kayla Bentz; two sisters, Wanda Morsh of Sheridan and Vivian (Alvin) Knack of Toluca; two brothers, Butch Applebee of Marseilles and

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Wayne; and two brothers, Jerry and Kenneth Applebee.

MARIE E. BLACK Born: Feb. 6, 1918 Died: March 22, 2015

Marie Eleanor Black, died Sunday evening, March 22, 2015, in her home.

She was the widow of August Black and the mother of nine children.

Marie was born February 6, 1918, in Bellwood, Illinois. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Marie (Gilson) Weber. As a youth she lived in Bellwood and attended Proviso Township High School in Maywood for 3 years. Her family moved to Papineau, Illinois and she graduated from St. Anne High School in 1935.

She took courses at Chicago Business College and worked 10 years for Precision Metals in Chicago.

Marie married Augie Black in Juneau, Alaska October 19, 1944. They lived there the duration of World War II and then moved to Morris where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Their nine children survive them, George, Don (Kathy), Frank, Jean, Ed, Linda, Jim (Marifran), Mike (Trisha),

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be this Saturday morning, March 28th at 10:00 o’clock at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 516 East Jackson Street in Morris. All are invited. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Morris. Morris High School to smooth change from eighth to ninth grade MORRIS – Administration and faculty acknowledge the transition from eighth grade to freshman year is a difficult one for students.

That’s why Morris Community High School is placing an increased focus on freshman students for the 2015-16 school year.

“Freshmen improvement is important to me,” English and speech instructor Andrea Gustafson said. “Eighth grade to high school is a tricky transition. Research supports the importance.”

According to the National High School Center, freshman year is a “make or break” time for students. In fact, NHSC’s research found more students fail ninth grade than any other grade in high school.

“Our next freshman class will be more collegial and competitive than our past classes because of the changes we’re going to make,” Principal Kelly Hussey said.

Morris High School’s freshmen focus is not an indication the school is hurting academically. Hussey said the school’s composite yearly ACT scores have risen from about 20.2 a decade ago to 21.5 in the past five years. But the mentality is clear – there always is room to improve.

“Our teachers have expressed some freshmen need organizational and test-taking skills,” District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said. “We’ve always been able to identify struggling students coming from feeder schools, but we can monitor grades week-by-week and with extra attention, see if students improve.”

Hussey said recent talks with faculty have shown the importance of a cohesive transition into high school.

“Students acquire a variety

of skills in grades K-8 that we need to pull together into one mindset,” Hussey said. “We get kids from four different middle schools, who may all learn the same topic in a different way, depending on the school they attend.”

Morris Elementary School District 54 Superintendent Teri Shaw agreed the transition from eighth grade to high school is critical.

“We’ve always been fervent in verbal articulation,” Shaw said. “We find out what expectations are from meeting with the high school. Our job is to get students ready for high school.”

High school faculty will look to set expectations in orientation and each freshman teacher will know what approach is needed based on the student’s past, Hussey said.

One example of this is the recent appointing of English and reading teacher Amy Carr as a part-time reading specialist. In short, Carr will plan strategies, and lead and assist faculty in improving reading comprehension among students, with a special focus on freshmen.

The school, in preparing students for tech-heavy careers, has set goals of teaching digital literacy among students and reaching a one-to-one student-to-Internet ratio outside of the building, Hussey said.

Based on surveys, 90 percent of students responded they have Internet access at home.

“We’re not in a position where we can budget a $120K deal with a company to put an Internet device on each student,” Hussey said. “We have to make sure students are digitally literate for high school. We ask if they can access a Gmail account, interact with teachers, turn in work, do research or a presentation. We want to run a whole class through Google.”

Comcast’s Internet Essentials for low-income families, Hussey hopes to reach a level where every student can access study materials, communicate with teachers about schoolwork and turn in assignments online.

But grades aren’t everything. Hussey said class ranks are an imperfect process, something he’s studied since his master’s thesis on the topic.

“Colleges already have a rating placed on high schools,” Hussey said. “Guidance counselors know if students are competitive based on their high school and the classes they take. The valedictorian might not always be the best

student.”

Gustafson said freshman year is a key to a student’s future.

“So many of my past students either at graduation or

years after have told me they wish they tried more freshman year, whether it be studying or clubs,” Gustafson said. “I’ve seen the effect it has years later.”

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka trustees are urging Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly to protect local municipalities’ share of the state income tax. The village had previously reached out to all state representatives, urging them to support local government. On Tuesday, trustees unanimously approved a resolution concerning municipal shares of the state income tax.

The resolution represents the village’s participation in a response the Illinois Municipal League has distributed to municipalities, Minooka Village Administrator Dan Duffy said. “This is the official resolution where the board is taking a stance,” Duffy said.

Rauner’s budget proposal would cut local government’s share of the state income tax in half. Minooka stands to lose $530,000 from its annual budget.

When Illinois instituted the state income tax in 1969, local governments were asked to forego enacting local income tax with the understanding they would instead receive 10 percent of state taxes collected from residents in their jurisdiction.

The loss of the income tax revenue will result in elimination of jobs, local tax increases, cuts in programs and services and increase local debt that would be felt by all citizens, according to the resolution.

“This is the income tax we all paid,” Duffy said.

Duffy has contacted other municipalities encouraging other local boards and councils to also make their objections known. The Morris City Council last week approved a letter of objection to Rauner’s budget plans. Morris stands to lose $675,000 with the proposed

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After much debate, the Morris Planning Commission Wednesday decided to make no recommendation regarding the rezoning of a former chiropractor office building on North Street.

The owner of the property at 115 E. North St., which is a house converted for a chiropractor office, went before the Planning Commission requesting a zoning change from Business-2 to Residential-4 multi-family zoning. Owner Les Anderson is looking to take the four unit building to a seven-unit, one of which he plans to live in.

Concerns were raised by City Planner Mike Hoffman, who said a variance amendment to B-2 may be applied for in the future, but in respect of current code, Hoffman argued against approving an R-4 zoning.

“I don’t think R-4 is a fit for this property,” Hoffman said.

“Code requires two spaces per unit. You’d need 14 spaces for this property.”

Anderson’s attorney pointed out that units to east, west and north of the property are residential units in a down-

town area, and whether the eight parking spaces met R-4 code or not, it would help alleviate parking congestion in the area. He also argued that if the building were forced to become a mixed-use residential and office building, increased traffic to a potential business would create more parking problems.

Anderson said he wants to rent out three currently unoccupied units, but cannot because of the current B-2 zoning.

Commissioner Barry Narvick abstained from the debate due to a business relationship.

Narvick and Anderson agreed on a bid to pave the parking area. Without his vote, the commission could not get a majority vote either way, leaving the commission unable to make a recommendation.

City Attorney Brad Nolden said he would give notes on both sides of the issue to the Morris City Council for further consideration of the rezoning.

Earlier in the evening, the Morris Zoning Board of Appeals voted for variances concerning the same property.

MORRIS – Schools stand to lose out under a budget fix emerging from Springfield this week. That fix aims to resolve a $1.6 billion hole in this year’s budget. The shortterm solution – aimed to fund severely underfunded daycare programs, along with salaries for prison guards and court reporters – calls for a 2.25 percent across-the-board cut to schools and other programs in the last three months of the fiscal year that ends June 30.

The legislation passed the Illinois House earlier this week. A vote is expected Thursday by the Illinois Senate. While expected, news of additional cuts were not welcomed by local officials.

Doing more with less is nothing new for schools, said Chris Mehochko, superintendent for the Regional Office of Education for Grundy and Kendall counties. Having grown accustomed to budget cuts and lagging state payments, school officials have for years built up – and dipped into – cash reserves.

Joliet Public Schools District 86 is one of those districts hit harder by the cuts.

“The biggest part of the budget is personnel salaries and benefits. And we can’t touch that. We can’t lay anybody off,” Russell said. “We’ll have to dip into our reserves.”

The legislation under consideration gives Gov. Bruce Rauner authority to transfer money from programs such as roads, parks and conservation, to those deemed more of a priority for the last three months of the fiscal year.

It also gives the governor the authority to distribute $97 million to needy schools less able to absorb the reduction.

She was an excellent cook, well known for potato salad and lemon meringue pie. She was also an amazing seamstress. She loved country music and enjoyed many family pets throughout the years.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – After a successful eight-year career with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Deputy Nitro has retired.

Assigned to Sergeant Paul Clampitt, Deputy Nitro was appointed a member of the Patrol Division in 2007, when he was 2 years old, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Following his appointment, Nitro and Clampitt spent the next 10 weeks attending the Illinois State Police Canine Training Program which led to their state certification as a “dual purpose” team; designated for use as a patrol protection and narcotic detection tool.

During his tour with the sheriff’s office, Nitro excelled in the areas of tracking, bite apprehension and narcotics detection. Nitro was a frequent visitor in local schools, not only for drug detection, but to interact with the children and demonstrate his tracking abilities.

In 2010 during an apprehension training demonstration, Nitro suffered a severe injury, rupturing ligaments in his right leg and paw. What could have been a career ending injury for most K-9s, didn’t stop Deputy Nitro.

His injuries were surgical-

ly repaired at the University of Illinois Veterinary Hospital in Champaign, according to the release. After his return to duty, you never would have known Nitro worked the rest of his career with numerous screws and metal pieces in his right leg and paw.

Nitro has been an asset not only to the sheriff’s office, but to many local law enforcement agencies throughout his career; as he was often requested by other agencies to assist with investigations.

“He assisted our agency in the apprehension of countless narcotics traffickers and the removal of several hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of illegal drugs and United States currency from our streets, and his excellent tracking abilities led to the apprehension and arrest of numerous felons,” Sheriff Kevin Callahan said in the release. “He had an outstanding career and will be missed, but I know he will enjoy his retirement.”

Nitro’s official last day of duty was March 19.

the Environmental Health division.

Ted Cruz can obstruct, but can he lead?

Even before his first day in the Senate, it was evident Ted Cruz had his eyes on a bigger stage. Monday, that stage came into full view when Texas’ junior senator announced he would seek the GOP nomination for president in 2016.

Most of the country knows Cruz as the freshman senator who waged a 21-hour quasifilibuster in 2013 to blast the Affordable Care Act, including a recitation of the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham.” That stunt led to an ill-advised government shutdown and drew the ire of fellow Republicans who said Cruz relished dishing out criticism without offering viable solutions.

While not a surprise, Cruz’s candidacy looks to be pivotal for the GOP. He represents the tea party wing of a Republican Party that needs to attract more moderates and uncommitted voters to win national elections.

By his own admission and actions, Cruz has no time for

either – not a positive sign from someone who wishes to occupy the Oval Office. His bombastic style is wearing thin.

During this campaign, Cruz must do more than pander to the farthest-right reaches of the Republican Party on hot-button issues such as immigration, health care and federal spending.

The nation has too many critical issues on the table, and as a presidential candidate, he has a responsibility to propose concrete solutions, even if it means reaching across the political aisle.

Continuing obstructionist paths might excite primary voters, but it won’t benefit the nation or the conservative cause.

Beyond the issues are the optics: There is a certain irony in the timing of his pursuit, which roughly parallels that of the current occupant of the White House.

Cruz has been in the Senate the same amount of time Barack Obama served before

running for president, is about the same age Obama was when he first sought the presidency and has a limited resume.

Still, Cruz is not someone to be underestimated. In spring 2012, he was just a former state solicitor general, another name in a crowded field of Republicans seeking to succeed U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. Cruz did just well enough to force a runoff against party favorite David Dewhurst – then trounced him in Round 2.

Cruz’s candidacy in the 2016 race will define a boundary for the GOP’s right flank. He has argued that the GOP has lost elections because it hasn’t been bold and aggressive enough. This run certainly will test that theory.

Most of all, though, Cruz needs to acknowledge that angry opposition is a poor substitute for prudent leadership.

“Media coverage is not about ratings, it is about lives,” Coptic Orthodox Bishop Angaelos said during a panel at the National Press Club this past week.

He’s based in London and came to the United States, as he has frequently in past months, to raise alarms, make pleas and express gratitude.

Much of what most Americans know of the Middle East involves violence and impossible struggles. But His Grace Angaelos is here to deliver a different message. Don’t get caught up in ideology and don’t make assumptions. Misreporting and misquoting can unintentionally feed violence, Angaelos warns.

Just as the media has a responsibility to accurately and humanely depict the tragedy and suffering of persecuted groups in the Middle East, we as responsible citizens have a duty to think and act appropriately.

The courage of these persecuted Christians should provide an example to Americans, who have in many ways taken religious freedom for granted.

Bishop Angaelos is grateful that the stories of the 21 Christians killed by an ISIS death squad – a slaughter brazenly trumpeted in a video released by the terrorist group – were of interest to the Western media and told with sensitivity.

We must be careful about terminology and generalizations, Angaelos says. It’s not, for instance, “the Muslim world.” There are Chaldean Christians there. There are Maronite Christians there.

There are Coptic Christians there.

Robert Destro, a law professor at the Catholic University of America, who moderated the discussion, added that there is an astounding amount of ignorance about Christian-

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez ity in the Middle East. I think of violence against Christians throughout the world – a friend who often works in Haiti just told me of the rash of horrific violence nuns, among others, are experiencing at the hands of mysterious assailants – and yet they serve on.

I think of a 71-year-old religious sister who was gangraped recently in India, who forgave the men who attacked her. Undeserved love and forgiveness can be a powerful countercultural witness in an atmosphere of hatred, despair, exhaustion and exasperation.

It can be light in a darkening world.

Some months ago, Pope Francis stated emphatically that the world cannot allow Christians to vanish from the Middle East. I thought of this as Katrina Lantos Swett, chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, said during the panel question-and-answer period: “Listen to what terrorists say.

They will often tell you their mission ... ‘Rome next’ was not a theoretical flourish.”

As Holy Week and Easter approach, the Christians of the Middle East threatened by ISIS are walking the difficult way of the Cross.

As they do so, we could afford to stop, look, listen and support them. For their sakes and our own.

Jurasits caps career with Player of the Year honor MORRIS GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-TIME SCORING LEADERS

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – She is the leading scorer in Morris girls basketball history. She was named tournament MVP at Prairie Central this season, all-Northern Illinois Big 12 East first team and honorable mention IBCA all-state.

The honors and accolades started coming at the start of the season for Julie Jurasits, and they still are with the Morris Daily Herald naming her Player of the Year.

What will she remember from her high school days as she prepares for basketball on the next level at the University of Missouri-St. Louis?

“It was fun,” she said.

“We had a fun group of girls this year. There weren’t any cliques on the team. Everyone got along and had a great time.

“Coming into the season, it was my senior year and I didn’t know what kind of season was in store for us. But this was the best season I have ever been a part of.”

After winning only nine games the previous season, the Redskins turned things around this year and finished with a 19-10 record. They reached the semifinals of the Class 3A Providence Regional before falling to Lincoln-Way West.

And Jurasits was a big reason why. She averaged 15 points and seven rebounds a game, including one monster game against Plainfield North where she had 37 points and 20 rebounds. Against DeKalb, she hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that not only capped a 22-0 Morris run in a 54-32 win, but gave her an even 1,000 points for her career. In her final game against Lincoln-Way West, Jurasits scored 13 points to finish her career with 1,162, the most in school history, topping Brittanie Crose’s total of 1,158.

“My goal coming into the season was getting to 1,000,” Jurasits said. “My dad and I would do calculations and figure out how many points a game I would need. After I got to 1,000, I thought I might be able to get to the all-time record, but I wasn’t really think-

“That was another great thing about this team. Nobody cared who scored, as long as someone did. Everyone contributed something in every game. It was awesome.”

Morris coach Kate Carey noticed a change in Jurasits’ game this season.

“We knew we would have to lean on her this year,” Carey said. “Her presence on the floor opened things up for other players. When teams put the emphasis on stopping her, we had other girls that could score, so they would have to pay attention to them, too.

Then, it opened things back up for Julie.

“In her junior year, if a team went box-and-one against her, it might shut her down.

This year, she did a great job of getting points on offensive rebounds and putbacks. She got a lot of points that way, and we needed her to do that.”

At 5-10, Jurasits could get in and rebound with the big girls, but she also is skilled enough to go outside and shoot a 3-pointer or take someone to the basket off the dribble. That mix is not something you see every day.

“She was definitely a matchup problem for most teams,” Carey said. “It’s going to be tough next year. The

whole dynamic of our team is going to be different. How we run our offense, our defense, our rebounding. It will all be different without Julie there.

“Girls like her don’t come into the school every two or three years. It’s more like once every 10 years or so.”

That’s why Carey was glad to have Jurasits around. Not only for her talent, but for everything else she brought to the program.

“It was great for the younger players in the program to be part of her career,” Carey said. “They got to see how much of a gym rat she was and how hard she worked to get to where she got. If some of the younger players take inspiration from that and do the same thing, and then more players do it, that’s how you build a program.

“She definitely has a passion and a love for the game.

It’s not often you go by the gym and not see her shooting. We will miss her.”

As for preparing for the next level, Jurasits expects to spend more time in the gym.

“It’s a whole different game in college,” she said. “I know I am going to hit the weight room and get stronger. I took a little break after the season, but I have been back in the gym a little bit, shooting and playing some pickup games. A lot of the girls from the team are playing other sports this spring, so I play a lot of games against guys. I figure that will help me.

“Once the summer hits, I will probably get more serious. And the college coaches will let me know what I need to work on, too.”

One thing’s for sure this summer: Julie Jurasits will be in a gym.

This week we have looked at pairs of deals in which a small rearrangement of the cards transforms the right line of play or defense.

Look at this restyling of yesterday’s deal. One of West’s hearts has been given to East. How does that affect the result in four spades after the defense begins with three rounds of hearts?

As I mentioned yesterday, North might have raised spades with only three-card support when holding a minimum opening bid with 3-4-5-1 or 3-1-5-4 distribution. So South rebid three clubs to leave open three no-trump and four spades as possible game contracts. Here North, with a good club holding and four trumps, jumped to four spades. He hoped that his weak trumps would not prove fatal.

South must try to hold his trump losers to one by twice leading toward the hand with the two honors.

Yesterday, with hearts splitting 4-4, that line worked perfectly. Today, though, if East is wearing a prescription pair of glasses, he can defeat the contract.

When declarer plays a spade from the board at trick five, East must immediately grab the trick with his ace and lead another heart. As you can see, this affects a trump promotion.

If South ruffs low, West overruffs; or if South ruffs high, East will eventually gain a trump trick.

Short-cut cooking source of guilt for busy new wife Dear Abby: I am a full-time working woman, part-time student and new wife to an incredible husband. We’re in our mid-20s and have been living together for a year, but I have a problem I’m still unsure about.

I also hope you will be lucky enough to find a higher-paying job with a shorter commute, because not everyone is able to do that.

Because I believe in both love and practicality, I think it’s important you and Gary have premarital counseling together to clarify whether you’re on the same page regarding finances.
