Marie Eleanor Black, died Sunday evening, March 22, 2015, in her home. She was the widow of August Black and the mother of nine children.

Marie was born February 6, 1918, in Bellwood, Illinois. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Marie (Gilson) Weber. As a youth she lived in Bellwood and attended Proviso Township High School in Maywood for 3 years. Her family moved to Papineau, Illinois and she graduated from St. Anne High School in 1935. She took courses at Chicago Business College and worked 10 years for Precision Metals in Chicago.

Marie married Augie Black in Juneau, Alaska October 19, 1944.

They lived there the duration of World War II and then moved to Morris where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Their nine children survive them, George, Don (Kathy), Frank, Jean, Ed, Linda, Jim (Marifran), Mike (Trisha), and Rich. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Marie was predeceased by her parents, husband, sisters, Margaret Wiedemann, Ardell Shortell, Opal VanBorg, Mildred “Mimi” Soucie; and brothers, Nicholas “Dick” Weber and George Weber.

Marie was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris. She was a past member of the VFW Auxiliary, Morris Junior Women’s Club, Morris Country Club, and American Legion Auxiliary. Marie loved children, nature, reading, and life. Her favorite book was the Bible. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be this Saturday morning, March 28th at 10:00 o’clock at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 516 East Jackson Street in Morris. All are invited.

ANNA L. JOHNSON Born: Jan. 6, 1930 Died: March 23, 2015

Anna L. Johnson, 85, of 221 W. Chippewa St, Dwight, IL, passed away with family by her side at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee on Monday, March 23, 2015.

Services will be Wednesday, March 25th, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation two hours prior to service at Hager Memorial Home, Dwight, IL. Anna was born January 6, 1930, in Cypress, IL to Oscar and Myrtle (Shourd) Davault. She retired from R.R. Donnellys after 23 years as the shipping specialist.

Anna is survived by four daughters, Connie (Fred) Oelschlager, Susan Shepherd, Donna (Joe) Lopez, Joyce Johnson; two sons, Tom (Deb) Johnson, Walt Johnson; and one sister, Mary “Silvie” Johnson. Having sixteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Johnson, six sisters and 2 brothers. Memorials are to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Kevin T. Fox, 29, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Saturday on a Grundy County failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of theft.

• Kellie A. Drees, 40, of Coal City, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs.

She was given an April 13 court date. She also was cited for possession of cannabis under 2.5 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Ryan W. Shaver of Minooka, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Sunday on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis over 30 grams and possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver. He also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, election communication and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Obstetrician delivered more than 8,000 babies in 43 years

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Growing up, Dr. John Roth Jr. knew he would be a doctor like his father.

He knew because his grandmother told him so.

“She told me, ‘You are going to be a doctor,’ and she meant it,” Roth said. “It was expected of me.”

At just 24 years old, Roth graduated medical school in three years instead of the typical four. He knew being a doctor was what he wanted to do, but he didn’t have any goals beyond that.

He went to Denver General Hospital and interned for a year when he met Dr. John Roth a young nurse Jr. named Judie, who later become his wife.

“I was working in a 22-bed ward and he would come in to take care of a patient. He washed her feet and treated her like the queen of England,” Judie Roth said. “He treated her so kind, I fell in love with him that day.”

After his year as an intern, Roth was drafted to Vietnam.

After Vietnam, he returned to Denver to St. Joseph Hospital for his three-year residency, before returning to Morris to practice medicine.

“I didn’t know what type of doctor I wanted to be. My dad was a general practitioner,” he said. “I thought when I came back from Vietnam I’d be a surgeon, but my dad said we didn’t need a surgeon in Morris. If there was a crisis we needed an OB (obstetrics), so I went into OB because that is what Morris needed.”

He said obstetrics still allowed him to perform surgery, but it also gave the Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, then known as Morris Hospital, a doctor to call when

Former Morris resident Reggie Bockman, now of Vicksburg, Mississippi, was grateful Roth chose obstetrics when, at 16 years old, she went into labor with her oldest son Dustin, who will turn 29 this June.

“Everything seemed perfectly normal up to about seven months,” she said. “Then the ultrasounds started to show there was a problem.”

Her son was born with gastroschisis, a birth defect in which an infant’s intestines are outside of the body because of a hole in the abdominal wall. “Dr. Roth was as calm as could be. He had to deliver before he could scrub up,” she said. “He made everything sound so simple. I honestly believe if it was someone else the outcome would have been far worse.”

She didn’t realize at the time how much he helped her get through that rough time, she said. Her son has grown to play football in school and went on to become an alligator hunter featured on television.

Delivering an alligator hunter is a first for him, Roth said, though there aren’t many firsts when you have delivered 8,000 babies in a 43-year career.

He describes labor and delivery as “hours of boredom followed by utter sheer panic,” but said he enjoyed it all, even though it meant missing countless holidays and events with family as he brought a

Vickie Willis of Morris went to see Roth’s father, Dr. John Roth Sr., when she was pregnant with her first child before she moved away to Denver.

When she returned to the area, she made an appointment to see Dr. Roth Jr., wor-

ried something was wrong after she gained a significant amount of weight. It was Roth who told her she was five months pregnant. She had no other symptoms and had no idea that was the case.

Roth went on to deliver her second daughter Tammi, and her third daughter Jamie.

“He has such a great bedside manner you don’t even realize he’s examining you,” she said.

When it was her daughter Tammi Casey of Seneca’s turn to see a doctor, her mother took her to see Roth. He went on to deliver all three of Casey’s children as well.

“He has such a caring bedside manner. I’m sad he’s not going to be there,” Casey said.

Delivering babies wasn’t all Roth did for the family. He found cervical cancer when examining Willis and set her up with a doctor at Loyola for treatment.

“He told me he didn’t want to see me again for five years,” Willis said. “After my doctor at Loyola transferred, I asked if I could come back and he said yes. I was so happy. I’ve always worried about who I will go see if he retires.”

Roth said at 74 he believes it’s time to retire, and he knows he’s leaving the field in good hands. Unlike when he returned to Morris as the first and only doctor practicing obstetrics, many doctors are now available.

“I’m so happy I’m leaving it in their hands,” Roth said about the doctors in the area.

The hospital will host a retirement party next month for Roth.

MORRIS – Zora Baron, a 19year resident of Morris, said she jumped on the opportunity to run for alderman in the Third Ward as soon as she heard of the opening.

Baron, a 48-year-old single mother of two, said her concerns as a taxpayer weren’t spurred on by any specific incident, but have simply grown over time. “When I walk my dog I’ve seen an increase in issues,” Baron said. “I don’t

want things to go south. I feel I’d have more control if I’m elected.”

Baron faces two opponents in the April 7 election for the City Council seat: Democrat Jeffrey Wachowski and Independent Robert K. Strandell.

Baron said the biggest issue she’s encountered is the topic of a landfill expansion, which she opposes. High on her list are recent crime, garbage and snow removal.

“It only snows enough to toss all that snow on our driveways twice a year, but if it’s that rare of an occurrence how come we can’t avoid it?” Baron said. “I have a lot of seniors in my ward and struggle myself sometimes with ‘heart attack’ snow.”

A Democratic candidate and resident of Morris for 30 years, Wachowski said the amount Jeffrey of support he Wachowski received in a 328-295 vote loss to Alderman Don Matteson two years ago inspired him to run again.

“I’m semi-retired and have a lot of time to help our community,” Wachowski said. “I would like to see it remain or improve. It’s my time to give back.”

Wachowski faces two other opponents in the April 7 election for the City Council seat: Republican Zora Baron and Independent Robert K.

Strandell. The candidates are running to fill the seat being vacated by Alderman Brian Feeney, who is not seeking re-election.

Currently working for the Illinois Department of Transportation, Wachowski said he’s a supporter of Habitat for Humanity and would like to see more homes built. A Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity subdivision is underway in the Third Ward.

He hopes to keep families and homeowners in Morris with better-paying jobs. He believes the long-anticipated riverfront marina project will bring jobs, tourism and tax dollars that can improve the ward.

“I’m proud to say I’m from Morris,” Wachowski said.

Though she’s never held office or campaigned for it, Baron said she learned politics from her father’s company, McKeon & Associates, which is a global public opinion and research firm. “I don’t consider myself a politician just yet, but I’m a concerned taxpayer who wants the best for the Third Ward,” Baron said.

Working as a paraprofessional with the Joliet Township High School District, Baron also is concerned about school funding and budgets in Morris. She said she’s against overspending and will fight for infrastructure and capital improvements.

“When I say I’m going to do something, I do it,” Baron said.

Baron said she’s renovated two other homes in the Third Ward and buys all materials from Habitat for Humanity. “My home was built in 1890 and I’m the third owner of it,” Baron said. “I take a lot of pride in that and preserving history.”

Baron has worked with special needs children for 14 years and has been a member of the historical society.

“I’m all about improving the look of our community,” Baron said. “I have the time and passion for Morris. I see no way I’d ever sell my house here.”

“We’ve had some recent issues with gangs and robberies,” Strandell said. “I’d like to start a neighborhood watch team in the Third Ward to curtail that problem. Maybe that could’ve stopped some robberies if it were in place before.”

Wachowski has been involved in community projects since moving to Morris, including youth football for 17 years. He’s been an active member of the Grundy County Rod & Gun Club and the Youth Athletic Association for nine years. Married 40 years, Wachowski has four adult children and 10 grandchildren, which provides added inspiration.

“It’s another reason I’m running again,” he said. “I’m proud to say I’m from Morris and I want them to say the same.”

State cuts, point of sale hitting hard

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter will sit down with department heads and elected officials Wednesday to discuss where the county budget can be trimmed.

The county faces declining revenue that could result in a more than $1 million loss to the county due to loss of pointof-sale revenue from Channahon and proposed cuts by the state.

“We know for sure that we aren’t getting the point-of-sale revenue from Channahon,” Welter said. “While we are vigilant about the proposed state cuts, we aren’t there yet.”

Channahon, along with several other state municipalities, were sued by the Regional Transportation Authority for using taxing strategies that enticed companies to open purchasing offices in Grundy County to take advantage of lower sales tax rates.

In November 2013, the Illinois Department of Revenue became involved in rewriting the state’s sales tax sourcing laws when the Illinois Supreme Court ruled the laws

were basically unconstitutional.

In June 2014, the Joint Committee of Administrative Rules adopted the Illinois Department of Revenue’s proposed sales tax sourcing rules, which included a five-part test.

Companies must meet at least three of the five criteria to be considered a legal business headquarters.

Since those changes were implemented, Channahon’s point of sale program showed steady decline. Today, there are no companies participating in the program.

“Currently we have no one enrolled, but we are still looking at possibilities under the new law,” Channahon Mayor Joe Cook said. “We are certainly open to it, but it is up to the individual companies what resources they want to put in to it. My personal feeling is that there will be people interested.”

In the meantime, Grundy County has seen revenues decrease in fiscal 2015 from Channahon’s sales tax drop to $73,667, from a high of $358,539.

Both numbers are significantly lower than the same sales tax revenue for fiscal 2014 of $1.33 million and from the highest, fiscal 2011, where it

saw revenue reach $2.34 million.

Welter gave a presentation to the Grundy County Finance Committee on Monday, which explained the revenue loss and offered insight into ways to get the county budget balanced.

He said the board needs to decide on a plan and implement it immediately to find between 3 and 6.5 percent reductions.

“We are looking at a combination of things: not starting capital projects that haven’t started yet, reducing department budgets, and moving money set aside for the Mazon River Project to the general fund,” Welter said Tuesday.

“The Mazon River Project is a project the county has been working on with the state for decades and we have no idea

“Furlough and layoffs should be the last consideration,” Joyce said. “That is taking money out of people’s pockets and that is the very last thing we should do.”

Welter said he doesn’t believe the county is at that point yet, but if it were to get there as state sales tax revenues are still in question, the board also would be asked to furlough one meeting a month to help meet the budget.

Raises approved for Channahon admins, staff

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon District 17 School Board has approved raises for district principals, the dean, the finance director and support staff.

The raises, which the board approved Monday, will go into effect during the 2015-2016 school year.

Principals and the dean received raises of 4 to 5 percent.

Pioneer Path School Principal Laura DuBois will make $70,297; N.B. Galloway School Principal Angela Stallion will make $90,795; and Three Rivers School Principal Susan Kavich will make $98,484.

Channahon Junior High School Principal Chad Uphoff will make $105,936; and Athletic Director/Dean Brad Homerding will make $66,826.

Chief Business Official Michael Schroeder will receive a 2 percent raise with a new three-year contract.

Beginning July 1, Schroeder will earn $142,894 in the performance-based contract.

District support staff will receive 5 percent raises next school year.

Staffing changes coming for teachers, drivers, coaches

Also Monday, tenure was granted to teachers Katie Kern at Three Rivers; Katy Uphoff, Kelly Fisher and Robyn Meents at N.B. Galloway; and Janine Milles at Pioneer Path.

The school board also approved honorable dismissals of two bus drivers – Janice Selfridge and Kelly Studor.

Superintendent Karin Evans said a drop in general student enrollment, combined with

the switch over of special education students to the Southern Will County Cooperative for Special Education meant a decrease in bus routes.

Evans said administrators will watch the district’s alternative bus routes to Romeoville, Palos Heights and Braidwood, currently run by a private transportation company, Illinois Central.

If the number of students on those routes is similar to or larger than this year, the district will consider running the routes with district bus drivers, meaning the dismissed drivers could be hired back.

Also Monday, the board approved hiring Maura Steinke as a social worker at Channahon Junior High, Kiley Sommers as a math/STEM lab teacher at CJH, Seth Evans as fifth-grade boys basketball coach, and Alex Applebee and

Kayla Kinder as assistant track coaches.

The resignation of Kristen Trinowski, a third-grade teacher, also was accepted.

Computer replacement plan approved for PCs, iPads

The board also approved a five-year computer replacement plan that will replace all district computers and iPads that are between 5 and 6 years old.

Since fiscal 2013, all new computers purchased by the district have had a five-year warranty.

Previously, the district replaced devices that were as old as 8 years.

The plan will begin this summer, when Technology Director David Bergstrom will add 20 laptops and a laptop cart for the third and fourth grades and two laptop carts

for the junior high.

The school board Monday also approved accepting an $89,800 bid by Mechanical Concepts of Illinois to replace the Three Rivers School commons area air handling unit.

The district received $35,000 from an Illinois grant to contribute to the project.

Meet the candidates night set April 1 before election

In the run-up to the April 7 consolidated election, a meet the candidates night will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at Channahon Lanes.

Three, four-year District 17 School Board seats will be up in the election.

Those seats are held by Jim Bogacz, George McCoy and Julie Bankes. Candidates on the ballot will be Dee A. Foreman, Julie Bankes and Mistey Kosek.

FAMILY TABLE The great salmon and greens caper

By SUSAN SELASKY Detroit Free Press While fish is a popular option for many during Lent, a lot of people still are intimidated by it, whether it’s cooking fish or finding a variety of fish they like.

For a hearty fish and one that stands up to many cooking methods, go for salmon. It’s one of my favorites because a nice, thick center-cut fillet, cut into portions, provides a great dinner option for guests.

Having broiled, baked and grilled salmon many ways, I am always on the hunt for a new way to make it sizzle.

Today’s dish is a win-win: Both the flavor and presentation is impressive. What I like is that the salmon is slowbaked so there is less chance of overcooking it. It’s paired with chickpeas and mustard greens and drizzled with a simple, yet awesome, homemade vinaigrette. If you’ve never made your own vinaigrette, it’s well worth the few minutes it takes to whisk up.

There are a lot of flavors in this dish, and they come together nicely. The chickpeas are seasoned with cumin, the greens with honey and garlic.

If you don’t like the slightly bitter flavor of the mustard greens, use rainbow chard, including the stems, as it has a milder flavor. But any hearty green will do.

The grand finale is a sprinkling of pan-fried capers. Once you pat the capers well, they are added to the skillet, where they’ll sizzle and pop open.

Bold and salty with a hint of herb flavor, capers are a good match for salmon (and other fish). A small amount goes a long way. If you’re not familiar with them, they are sold in small jars in a brine of salt and vinegar (look for them near the olives). Before using, always drain capers (reserving the brine) and rinse them.

My best advice for fish shopping is to find a reliable source and get to know your fishmonger. Also, ask questions. Your

fishmonger should know all about the fish they sell and be able to tell you where the fish is from, what it tastes like and the best way to cook it.

Once you know all about the fish, you’ll be able to whip up impressive fish dishes like today’s recipe at a moment’s notice.

SLOW-COOKED SALMON, CHICKPEAS AND MUSTARD GREENS Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Total time: 50 minutes

SALMON 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for the baking dish, divided 1 can (15.5 ounces) chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 large garlic clove, peeled, thinly sliced 1 bunch small mustard greens, ribs and stems removed, leaves coarsely chopped or rainbow chard 1 tablespoon honey 1/4 cup water 4 salmon fillets (about 5 ounces each, skin removed)

OPINION The political demise of Aaron Schock SPRINGFIELD – There’s really no mystery how Congressional wunderkind Aaron Schock fell from grace so rapidly. It’s simple, it’s too common in politics and it’s spelled H-U-B-R-I-S. Schock, suspected of lavish spending of taxpayer dollars, is calling it quits after the bright lights turned hot very fast.

In more than four high-profile terms, he ignored a parade of Illinois politicians who’d pulled similar stunts of self-indulgence before him.

And the 33-year-old Congressman became so enraptured with his own success and image he lost sight of the people he was in Washington to serve. While fundraising, he once said, “I’ve never forgotten where I come from, what values matter most and how you want me to lead.”

And that message came from the same fella who posed shirtless on the cover of Men’s Health magazine sporting his six-pack abs? Come on, guy, you’re from Peoria. The only six-packs people care about there have blue ribbons painted on them. I should know. I grew up not far away in Galesburg.

And did Schock really think the folks scarfing down corn biscuits at the Cracker Barrel in Bloomington related to their congressman?

He spent $40,000 having his Washington, D.C., office redecorated in the style of British aristocrats. Red paint, gilded picture frames and, yes, pheasant feathers. Whatever happened to “egg-shell white” and gray steel desks for a government office?

Anyway, the unusual décor caught the eye of a Washington Post reporter who wrote a story. Others started scouring the congressman’s financial

Schock misspent tens of thousands in tax dollars while ordinary folks back in Central Illinois were struggling to pay mortgages. In fact, enough financial irregularities cropped up that the congressman up and quit. He is hardly the first Illinois politician to blaze out.

Remember former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.? He is serving time after spending $750,000 in campaign funds for his personal use. He bought two stuffed elk heads, but no pheasant feathers, to hang on his office wall.

And, hey, Jackson got heat for other things like having an affair with a swimsuit model.

Schock, on the other hand, could be a swimsuit model.

And don’t forget Rod Blagojevich, who – with his wife – spent $400,000 on clothes while he was governor. Clothes, but no pheasant feathers. Rod ended up in prison, too. Consider what Schock’s father, Richard, told a TV reporter about his son: “Two years from now he’ll be successful, if he’s not in jail.”

Success can breed arrogance and arrogance entitlement. Perhaps Schock wishes he studied a long line of prominent Illinois politicians who squandered the public trust with acts of self-indulgence.

Suspicious movie grant dollars State Rep. David McSweeney is seeking an investigation into a $10 million grant to a Chicago-based film company that was approved by former Gov. Pat Quinn shortly before he left office.

We support McSweeney’s call for an investigation by the state’s Auditor General’s Office into what appears to be an inappropriate use of taxpayer money.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported over the weekend that Cinespace Chicago Film Studios asked Quinn for state grant money to buy industrial land that surrounds its studio. Quinn approved the request, to the tune of $10 million.

Cinespace cashed the

check, but, to date, no land has been purchased. And according to the Sun-Times, the owners of the land in question said they have no intentions of selling.

“I have sent a request to State Auditor William Holland to ask for an investigation of the grant money issued to Cinespace,” McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said in a news release issued Monday. “The state of Illinois can’t afford to be handing out money to companies that fail to use the money for the stated purpose of the grant. The people of Illinois need assurances that their hard-earned tax dollars are not being wasted and misused.”

This $10 million grant wasn’t the first time Quinn approved taxpayer money for the family-owned film studio.

The Sun-Times reported Cinespace has received five grants, totaling $27.3 million, during Quinn’s time in office.

Upon taking office in January, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed an executive order banning all nonessential state spending. Of course, Rauner understands Illinois is in a dire fiscal position.

Quinn, sadly, either doesn’t understand it or doesn’t care.

His parting gift to Cinespace – and slap in the face to taxpayers – should be investigated.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When he was in third grade, Austin Patterson moved from Kentucky to Morris. He grew up in the Bluegrass State loving basketball.

At the age of 3, he could make a shot on a regulation height basket.

When he got to Morris, though, he kept the love of basketball to himself.

For a while, anyway.

“I was in the musical in grade school and, one day, I went backstage and heard something in the gym behind me. I went back there and saw that there was a YMCA basketball practice going on. I just sat and watched it.”

Patterson began playing organized basketball in sixth grade at Shabbona Middle School.

“I would wake up at 7 on a Saturday morning and go outside in the driveway and shoot until lunch,” he said. “It was hard to dribble if you hit a crack in the driveway, so it made my ball-handling better.

“Then, I would just play on my own on the playground until the other guys came and asked me to play with them.”

It turned out to be a good decision, as Patterson cracked the career 1,000-point mark this season as a member of the Morris Redskins, who finished 18-10. He is being named today as The Morris Daily Herald’s Player of the Year. He finished the year with a 17.6 scoring average and 6.1 rebounding average. He also advanced to the state finals in the Country Financial 3-Point Showdown for the second straight year.

“You can describe Austin as a gym rat,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “But what separates him from other gym rats is that he was in the gym with a purpose. Other guys would be there playing horse or playing pickup games where they would pick up bad habits. Austin went there to get better.

“It takes a lot of maturity to stay focused and on track the way he did. It certainly paid off in our games this year.”

Indeed, Patterson had his own little ritual, one learned from earlier trips to the gym with his father, Chris. “I remember one Saturday my sophomore year, me and my dad went to MALS (District 101 Recreational Center),” Patterson said. “He told me I was going to shoot 100 free throws and we would see how many I made. I think I made 96.

That constant drive for improvement led Patterson to a 39.2 percentage behind the arc this season. It’s also what has junior colleges such as Joliet Junior College and Kishwaukee Community College vying for his services. He’s unsure yet which one he’ll choose.

Gut says rip McDonald, Bears, but is that right?

I’ve had an interesting day.

The phone rang at 12:45 Tuesday morning.

It was our son-in-law. Our daughter was in labor and it was time for us to race to their house to get our 20-month-old grandson so they could get to the hospital and give us a granddaughter.

I watched my wife and grandson sleep all night while I waited for the call that came about 8:15 telling me our granddaughter was here. Our Myla Rose.

You can’t imagine how perfect she is, just like her big brother.

Now I’ve been up all night and day, a bit exhausted, a bit delirious and I’ve spent the better part of the past 18 hours or so thinking about what my kids and grandkids mean to me.

Darn if the real world didn’t kick in when my phone started ringing off the hook, texts started buzzing and emails started flying, looking for comment on the Bears’ decision to sign McDonald, an alleged abuser of young women on multiple occasions.

Interesting juxtaposition, huh?

My first instinct was to leap into the fray with all the talk radio voices, Twitter tweeters and activists and rant and rail at the injustice of it all.

Then, in spite of the comedic value of the image of me taking on McDonald in a test of who might do the most damage to the other, I tried to imagine the horrible things I would do to him if he ever laid hands on my daughter or granddaughter.

McDonald is suing the second accuser.

Bears chairman George McCaskey didn’t green light this because he believes in second chances.

That’s not the guy I’ve known for almost 30 years.

He obviously believes McDonald is innocent, too.

There is nothing more disgusting or revolting than a man who would abuse a woman or a child, and there is no punishment severe enough.

But there is also nothing more important to our way of life and our belief in ourselves and who we are than the iron-clad defense of one’s innocence until proven guilty, or at least actually charged.

If it turns out McDonald is a bad guy, then he, McCaskey, Pace and Fox all deserve to suffer the strongest recriminations and consequences.

But what if he is innocent, which apparently everyone who has investigated him so far believes he is?

What does it say about all of you who’ve lined up to hang him out to dry.

I can protect my daughter and granddaughter from anyone who’d want to harm them physically, but how can I save them from a society that would execute them without a trial and in spite of the real possibility they might be innocent?

I remembered something said by a friend of mine who was coaching with the 49ers at the time of the first accusation of felony domestic violence against McDonald was made.

He said, “I’m telling you I don’t believe he did it. Not this kid. He wouldn’t attack a woman.”

I don’t know McDonald at all, but I know my friend, and this was not a defense he would make without real principle and belief.

It gave me pause.

McDonald was then accused of rape by a second woman in December and immediately released by the 49ers, my buddy’s credibility took a huge hit with me, and I assumed the guy was done.

But here’s the thing. Greg Hardy, formerly of the Carolina Panthers and now a Dallas Cowboy faced similar charges as McDonald and was found by a judge to be guilty as sin.

Adrian Peterson beat his kid bloody with a stick and just thinks we’re the ones who don’t get it?

Had the Bears signed either of those players today, I’d be wailing at the moon with all the other talking heads.

But after thorough investigations of McDonald on both claims of abuse, he never has been charged • Chicago Football editor Hub in either case.

Options open for D–line

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Two weeks ago, John Fox responded with a long pause when asked who the Bears have on the roster to play defensive end, before saying, “that’s really hard for me to answer right now.”

Now, Fox at least has a better answer of who will compete to play up front.

On Tuesday, the Bears signed two players who can play D-end in the new 3-4 defense, Ray McDonald and Jarvis Jenkins.

Both players will be on one-year deals, and McDonald’s is pending a physical.

The Bears are taking a chance on McDonald, a 6-foot-3, 290-pounder who was cut last season after two run-ins with the law. He was arrested Aug. 31 on felony domestic violence charges.

Those charges were subsequently dropped, with the Santa Clara district attorney’s office citing insufficient evidence.

The 49ers defended McDonald, 30, and chose not to suspend him, and he started 14 games, notching 39 tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble and four tackles for loss. In December, though, he was a suspect in a sexual assault case and the 49ers cut him on Dec. 17 for “a pattern of poor decision-making.”

He has not been charged in that incident and is suing the accuser for defamation.

Jenkins, 26, is 6-4, 315 pounds and turns 27 on April 24. He spent the past four seasons with Washington. Another five-technique who has the frame to kick inside, Jenkins played in all 16 games last season with 14 starts and had 28 tackles.

According to multiple reports, the Bears also agreed to terms with former Buccaneers inside linebacker Mason Foster. The 26-year-old had three interceptions in 2013, led all rookies in tackles in 2011 and had 62 tackles in 10 games last season.

Since North might have raised spades with only three-card support, holding, for example, 3-4-5-1 distribution, South rebid three clubs to test the waters. North, with four spades, a useful club king and a ruffing value in that suit, was happy to jump to game despite his weak trumps.

Declarer can afford only one trump loser. This requires finding East with the ace, the suit splitting 3-2, and leading twice toward the hand with the two honors.

Shoveling snow can be risky if you’re out of shape Dear Doctor K: Every winter my wife worries that I am going to have a heart attack while shoveling snow. Does she have cause for concern?

Dear Reader: She does.

Each winter, more than 1,200 heart-related deaths occur during or after snowstorms.

Shoveling snow is risky for many reasons: • Shoveling is similar to weight lifting. Resistance exercise raises both heart rate and blood pressure, stressing the heart.

• Cold weather affects the heart. To conserve body heat in the cold, blood vessels narrow. This raises blood pressure and puts stress on the heart.

• Untrained muscles make the heart work harder. Most people use their legs much more than their arms. Using

• Shoveling is seasonal.

Working out regularly greatly reduces a person’s overall risk of sudden death. But shoveling snow isn’t a regular form of exercise.

I have patients who insist on shoveling the snow themselves. If you fall into this category, heed my advice: • Get in shape before it snows. Fitness will protect your heart from the stresses of shoveling. Exercise yearround with a combination of aerobics, stretching, calisthenics and low-resistance weight

training.

• Don’t shovel early in the morning. That’s when heart attacks are most likely to occur.

• Don’t shovel after meals.

Your heart is pumping extra blood to your gut after you eat. If you shovel after a meal, you’re also asking your heart to pump extra blood to your muscles.

• Warm up. Stretch and limber up with calisthenics before you put on your coat.

• Use a lightweight shovel.

The snow is heavy enough.

• Shovel smartly. It’s much safer to lift two or three light loads than one heavy load. Yes, that may mean your shoveling will take a little longer. But that’s good: What you want to do is spread out the intensity.

• Pace yourself. Divide a big job into several 20-minute seg-

ments and pause to rest every five minutes.

• Set reasonable goals.

Clean only enough for safe passage. Don’t try to impress your neighbors by clearing your entire front walkway.

Just clear enough so that folks, walking single file, can get to your front door.

• Listen to your body. Put down your shovel and head indoors if you experience chest pain, palpitations, undue shortness of breath or fatigue, lightheadedness or nausea.

These could be symptoms of heart disease. Unfortunately, the first sign of heart trouble while shoveling snow may be none of these symptoms.

Instead, the heart just stops.

If you have heart disease, have risk factors for heart disease or are older than 50,

please take this advice: Hire someone to clear the snow for you, or at least use a snow blower.

About 10 years ago, one of my patients decided he was getting too old to shovel snow and hired someone to do it.

While walking to the bus on the first snowy morning, he experienced chest pain. One of the main arteries of his heart was nearly completely blocked. Just walking slowly was enough to stress his heart.

If he had shoveled snow that morning, he might not be with us. Fortunately, he caught the problem before it could injure his heart.
