Born September 12, 1922, Christine Mae was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Fornelli) Macketta.

She was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City, where she was once active with the Altar and Rosary Society. Tina was an avid card player, and enjoyed both shopping and dining out. She will most be remembered for her love of time spent with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her two children, Cynthia (John) Marshall of Denver, CO and Philip Henke of Palm Springs, CA; two grandchildren, David (Patricia) Marshall of San Diego,

POLICE REPORTS CA and Ginger (Daniel) Hyman of Denver, CO; two great grandchildren, Katherine and Hailey; and one brother, Michael “Sonny” Macketta of Coal City, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Tina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond on August 4, 1989; three sisters, Marie, Margaret, and Lorraine “Dolly”; and two brothers, James and Joseph.

Visitation was held on Monday, March 23, 2015, between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 N. Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Funeral services will follow Tuesday, March 24th at 10:00 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 S. Kankakee Street in Coal City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Rev. Robert Noesen officiating.

Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Tina will be laid to rest with her late husband Raymond.

Preferred memorial may be made as gifts in Tina’s memory to the Assumption Catholic Building Campaign, 195 South Kankakee Street, Coal City, Illinois 60416. Eunice L. “Honey” Mitchell, 89, of Morris, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 22, 2015, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center with her family by her side.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. Private inurnment will be held in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.

Born March 27, 1925, in Morris, the daughter of John and Hattie(Britt) Mitchell. She graduated from Morris High School. Eunice was employed for several years at Compton and Encyclopedia Brittanica in Chicago.

Following retirement she moved to Port Charlotte, Florida and moved back to Morris in 2003.

She is survived by one sister, Maxine Sheedy of Morris; one niece, Jill Wood of Morris; two nephews, Curt (Diane) Mitchell of Newark and Robert (Marianne) Mitchell of Morris; several great nieces and nephews.

Annual draw down has another big year

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – In a room filled with tables covered in John Deere green and yellow, supporters of the Grundy County Farm Bureau Foundation and the Grundy County Friends of Extension gathered Saturday to raise money to support the organizations.

With an auction that catered to the county’s hard-working farmers by offering corn and soybean seeds as well as half of a hog to feed the family, the two organizations raised more than $30,000 in the sixth annual draw down event.

“I think it’s the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” Randy Seggebruch, a founding member of Grundy County Friends of Extension, said Monday.

“We are lucky to have generous donors who are always there for the Farm Bureau Foundation and Friends of Extension.”

The event came on the heels of National Agriculture Week, a week set aside to celebrate and recognize what America’s farmers do for their communities and the country.

The two organizations used to hold two separate fundraisers when officials decided it

would be beneficial to host one event for supporters, who often are the same people.

“Six years ago we decided to pool our resources together,” Grundy County Farm Bureau Manager Tasha Bunting said at the event. “It gave us an opportunity to join forces to help benefit two organizations.”

The funds raised are split equally between the two organizations, which support agriculture education to area youth.

Seggebruch said in the previous five years, the organizations raised a total of more than $100,000.

The money raised by the Farm Bureau Foundation is used to help fund scholarships to students who are seniors in high school or in college, whose family is a member of the Farm Bureau.

Bunting said many of the area youth have gone on to college gaining degrees in agriculture, which benefits the industry.

They also use the money to fund a program called “Ag in the Classroom.”

All Grundy County fourthgrade students are introduced to agriculture during the monthly Ag in the Classroom session where they take part in a variety of agriculture activities including local crops, dairy farming, nutrition and careers in the agriculture field.

The students then compete in Ag Jeopardy, a tournament that tests their knowledge of agriculture.

The money raised by Friends of Extension is used to help provide supplies for the Grundy County University of Illinois Extension office as well as help fund programs for the area’s 4-H youth.

Friends of Extension was originally formed to help keep an Extension educator position in Grundy County.

The next year, the group’s mission became to keep the of-

fice in Grundy funded when it was fighting budget cuts.

While the University of Illinois Extension offices have since combined, placing Grundy, Kankakee and Will counties in a common office in Will County, the doors to the Grundy County office, located inside the Grundy County Farm Bureau building, have remained open with the help of Friends of Extension.

Seggebruch said once again the University of Illinois Extension program is facing cuts from the state budget.

“We are waiting for budget cuts, but this fundraiser helps us to be more solvent,” he said.

“We still have money here in our county to continue.”

Beth LaPlante, Extension director, said the event is a great opportunity to have everyone together to support two important organizations that teach leadership in the county’s youth.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Despite an emergency motion to get a referendum question for a rescue squad district on the April 7 ballot, Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson ruled Monday the question could not be added because election results could be at risk.

In December, Peterson granted the right to organize the Mazon/Verona/Kinsman Rescue Squad District, as well as to place on the ballot a referendum question asking for tax dollars to be levied for a new Mazon/Verona/Kinsman Res-

cue Squad District. The new district plans to service ambulance calls for the Mazon Fire Protection District and the Verona Kinsman Fire Protection District.

The referendum came to the attention of the Grundy County Clerk’s office Friday after staff heard organizer Tamara Halterman on a local radio station discussing the referendum and that the district expected to be on the April ballot. The clerk’s office said it never received the paperwork required to get on the ballot.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation and I feel bad for MVK district, they did a lot of work,” Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson said after the hearing Monday.

The clerk’s office reached the organizers and informed them the referendum was not on the ballot. The district’s

Brian O’Connor, attorney for the district, said he was told by an employee at the Grundy County Circuit Clerk’s office that the circuit clerk’s office would take the filed paperwork to the Grundy County Clerk’s office. According to Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman, the circuit clerk’s

office said during an investigation they made no such statement and typically an attorney will deliver a copy to the office it is required to go to.

“I’m not deciding whose fault it is today,” Peterson said in court. “But it’s not Ms. Olson’s fault in any way.”

Olson said if the question was added, a second ballot would have to be mailed out for those who received mailed ballots, and the question would have to be put in a database and go through vendors.

Her office would not be able to make sure the election would not be at risk with two ballots in circulation.

Early voting started Monday, but 100 in-person and mailed absentee ballots went out at the end of February.

Jackie Sparrow, president of the rescue squad district, said it was seeking becoming

a taxing rescue district so it could hire staff for daytime hours to operate the ambulance for both the Mazon Fire Protection District and the Verona Kinsman Fire Protection District when volunteers are typically at work.

“We need to have the money to have paid staff on call,” she said.

Currently the ambulance is funded through fundraisers and fees for the service, which Sparrow said are often negotiated much lower than the actual cost of transporting a patient due to insurance carriers. O’Connor said he would not seek an emergency appeal, but instead would return to court for status May 5 after reviewing if the district would have to start over getting petitions for a future election or if it would be able to reuse the paperwork already submitted.

The first, the 11th Doggie Easter Egg Hunt, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gould Park.

Founded by Bonnie Latta of Bone-ified Care, about 70 dogs participated in last year’s event.

Typically about 1,700 plastic eggs are filled with treats and laid across the park for the dogs to hunt. For a donation, the Easter Bunny will pose for pictures with humans and their canines. Latta could not immediately be reached Monday for further comment.

The Morris Lions Club is sponsoring its own egg hunt for children at 10:30 a.m. April 4 at Gould Park.

Lion member Lori Linn has participated in the event the past 10 years, and said it was sponsored by the Morris Lions Club for at least 20 years. Linn takes two weeks prior to the hunt to prepare Easter baskets

“I want the children to get the good stuff,” Linn said. “I don’t like that families go to the store and spend $20 and get nothing but grass and a little bit of candy.”

Linn said the motivation for her and the Lions Club in holding a yearly event is to give back to the children. She said a lot of families enjoy going outdoors for the event and participating in a traditional Easter egg hunt.

8 State’s attorney joins law enforcement in Springfield MORRIS DAILY HERALD SPRINGFIELD – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland joined other police chiefs, state’s attorneys and sheriffs in Springfield last week to express concern to lawmakers over continued cuts to programs for children that prevent crime.

As legislators begin budget deliberations, the law enforcement leaders met with legislative leaders to urge them to maintain current funding for the after-school program Teen REACH and the Child Care Assistance Program in fiscal 2016, according to a news release.

Gov. Rauner’s proposed budget would eliminate funding for Teen REACH. It also would make deep cuts to child care, including eliminating children ages 6 and up from the program.

“I’ve seen far too many situations in which unattended kids are tragically hurt or engage in criminal behavior that has far-reaching consequences for everyone it impacts,” Helland said in the release. “It’s just common sense that kids need productive and safe environments while mom and dad are at work. These programs fill that critical gap in time.”

The law enforcement leaders represented more than 300 law enforcement members who are a part of Fight Crime:

Invest in Kids Illinois, an anti-crime organization that advocates for evidence-based investments in programs for kids that aim to cut crime and violence.

They met with House Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton, a senior staff adviser to Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno and 16 other legislators Wednesday.

To keep kids away from crime and violence, the group urged that the fiscal 2016 state budget reflect a comprehensive strategy by funding and protecting strategies that work.

DWIGHT – Rotarians welcomed John Greuling from the Will County Center for Economic Development to its meeting earlier this month.

The purpose of the toll road is to ease the truck traffic on Interstate 80 and provide a more direct route for transportation to the BSNF and Union Pacific Intermodal yards, Greuling told the club, according to the release.

These are the largest receiving yards in North America.

Union Pacific also has intermodal yards in Rochelle, Crete and northwest Indiana.

The proposed Illiana Expressway would serve several purposes: as a freight bypass for the Chicago metro area,

alleviating congestion on I-80; an alternative to I-80 for travelers as currently there is no other East-West highway south of I-80; to make EastWest travel easily accessible for Central Illinois.

Greuling was very clear that the funding for this toll road would have the majority of its funding from private sources with a pre-determined amount from the state.

The funding entities for the project would be paid back through the toll fares.

They still are looking at creative ways to source funding, according to the release.

Wilmington, Braidwood to gain new competing dollar stores

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Wilmington and Braidwood each have a dollar store. Wilmington has a Family Dollar and Braidwood has a Dollar General. But by the end of this year, both will also have a Dollar General and Family Dollar within their borders.

The two dollar stores are expected to be big competitors on the national stage after Dollar General failed to purchase Family Dollar for $9.1 billion, according to Reuters.

And if a merger between Family Dollar and Dollar Tree goes through, the united company would take the greater share of the U.S. discount retail market than Dollar General, the current leader.

“Any type of commercial retail growth through the city is positive,” Wilmington Mayor Marty Orr said. “We do have a Family Dollar in town, but by adding the Dollar General it provides more people the opportunity to shop locally.”

Wilmington is the only one being built this year in Will or Grundy counties, according to a company spokeswoman. But it’s part of a larger, 730-store addition Dollar General expects to complete in 2015.

“We generally seek out areas where we think we’re going to do well,” said Communication Coordinator Mary Kathryn Patterson. The new 9,100-square-foot Dollar General will be built at 107 W. Kahler St., in a vacant lot in the older area of town, Orr said.

“We’re hoping for this to be a cornerstone for commercial growth in the area,” he said.

In Wilmington, Orr said residents are on both sides of a second dollar store coming into town.

“It’s a mixed bag,” he said.

“Some are happy to see something in the area, some say we already have one and we don’t need it. But it’s just a matter of business. You want to provide residents with as many options to shop as possible.”

City Administrator Tony Graff said Dollar General

could do well in that location with the traffic coming through. “We’re not actively marketing to any specific business right now,” Graff said.

Graff said residents have commented at public meetings that they want to see corporate chains, such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Dairy Queen and Taco Bell. But the city has little control over businesses deciding to move into town.

Braidwood already has a Dollar General. But Mayor Bill Rulien said construction on a Family Dollar at 240 E. Main St. will break ground in the next couple of months. The store is on an empty lot the village owns in the downtown area next to a new Casey’s General Store. Rulien said the dollar stores provide a different use than big box stores like Wal-Mart.

“You’re not going to stand in line in Wal-Mart when you can go buy a package of cups or toothpaste,” he said. “You walk in, grab it and run out.

It’s a convenience store for everyday necessities.”

A newly formed group of self-described “center-left” Democrats claims to have secured $20 million in commitments to spend on state legislative races here.

But that $20 million apparently isn’t meant to counter Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s infamous $20 million campaign stash, which he says will be used to support his allies and punish his enemies.

Indeed, the Democratic group appears to be promoting what could be seen as a somewhat softer, neoliberal version of Raunerism.

Illinoisans for Growth and Opportunity is not a traditional Democratic group, as its name more than implies.

The press release announcing the group’s launch blasted Democratic leadership, including former Gov. Pat Quinn and both legislative leaders, for passing a budget last year “that they knew would create a financial crisis.”

The group also bemoans the lack of manufacturing employment, the state’s horrible credit rating and its poor business climate ratings, without specifically endorsing any real world fixes like workers’ compensation reform.

The ILGO blames all these problems on unspecified “special interests” which have had “far too much influence with legislative majorities in setting public policy.”

The idea, apparently, is to create a well-funded alternate path for Democrats who may fear upsetting organized labor and other traditional party allies this year.

So far, though, specifics are almost completely absent.

Usually, it’s pretty easy to assess where a Statehouse organization stands.

They have priority lists

VIEWS Rich Miller and even lists of legislation which they support and oppose. No such list currently exists for Illinoisans for Growth and Opportunity.

Despite their harsh talk about their party’s legislative leadership, they claim that they’ve reached out to the caucus leaders to assure them that “we have their backs.”

And while they identified a handful of board members, financing will likely be done mostly in the dark. The group has formed a not-for-profit 501(c)(4) group, which will allow contributors to remain anonymous. That money and other public contributions will then be funneled to an independent expenditure committee.

The three publicly identified board members have contributed relatively few actual campaign dollars in the past, and one of them is married to a prominent Rauner supporter.

The ILGO’s press release, which was so critical of the state’s Democratic leadership it purports to support, had as its main thrust fixing this fiscal year’s budget problem, which is currently the biggest Statehouse topic by far. Quite a few Senate Democrats said that it looked like the press release was aimed directly at them because they weren’t fully cooperating with Gov. Rauner on the budget fix.

It’s difficult to argue with any of that.

Late runs lead Morris to extra-inning win

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – One of the things constantly drilled into a baseball player’s mind is “go hard into the base to break up a double play.”

Not only does this idea promote the constant hustle that coaches love, it can also be beneficial to the team. If a player slides hard into the base, the fielder may be disrupted and other runners on base may advance.

That happened Saturday for the Morris baseball team.

Not only did a runner advance when Tyler Bordner slid hard into second base to break up a double play, but that runner – Matt Walker – scored the winning run as the Redskins rallied for a 3-2 win over Bradley-Bourbonnais in eight innings in a nonconference game.

The thrilling moment of victory was fleeting, however, as Bordner remained on the

ground at second base, holding his knee in pain. In the process of breaking up the double play, Bradley-Bourbonnais shortstop Colin Bedell fell on Bordner’s knee.

Bordner was eventually helped off the field, and his diagnosis was unknown as of Monday.

“We’re thrilled with the win,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “But, we have a heavy heart for Tyler. We hope that it’s not serious, but we have to see what the doctor says.

“That play was Tyler to a ‘T’, though. If you ask him right now, he wouldn’t have gone about that play any other way. It’s how he plays, and it’s why he is so important to what we do.”

Although the concern for Bordner’s well-being was rightfully first and foremost in everyone’s mind, the game itself was a thriller.

Starting pitchers Tom Cheshareck of Morris and Alex Weigand of Bradley-Bourbon-

nais were both magnificent, and the relief work of Morris’ Cody Niewinski was nothing short of brilliant.

Cheshareck allowed just two runs – one earned – in five innings, striking out six and giving up just three hits.

Weigand, meanwhile, struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs.

Niewinski was summoned in relief in the top of the sixth, when Bradley-Bourbonnais scratched out a run to take a 2-1 lead. Juan Maldonado led off by getting hit by a pitch, then Owen Starr reached on an bloop single to right. A walk to Landen Jain loaded the bases, and another walk to Mike Mateja forced in Maldonado and Kein brought in Niewinski from left field.

Niewinski promptly got cleanup hitter to pop to short center before inducing a 6-4-3 double play to escape the bases-loaded, nobody out jam.

Niewinski then struck out the

side in the seventh and got Bradley in order in the eighth to move his record to 2-0.

“Tom did a great job,” Kein said. “He showed a lot of poise and composure out there and made some key pitches when he needed them. Cody was put in a tough spot, but he did a great job getting out of it.

“Our middle infield (shortstop Jake McDonald and second baseman Emmet Chouinard) turned a nice double play and made some other good plays, too.”

Chouinard had two hits to pace the offense for the Redskins (2-1), who were held without a hit by Plainfield North on Friday.

With two outs in the third inning, Chouinard singled to left and went to second on a wild pitch. Walker then reached on an error on a ball hit to left, scoring Chouinard to tie the game at 1.

The Redskins trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. Niewinski led off with a

walk, then went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kendall Enger. Thomas Dabney grounded to second, but the throw was wild, allowing Niewinski to score the tying run.

In the bottom of the eighth, Walker led off with a single to left and was bunted to second

by McDonald. Bordner was intentionally walked, bringing up Cheshareck. Cheshareck grounded to second, and the Boilermakers tried to turn a double play. Bordner slid hard and broke up the play, allowing Walker to score the winning run.

“Today was definitely a hang-in-there day,” Kein said.

“After what happened Friday, I was interested to see how we would play today. Emmet did a good job getting us going with two outs in the third. That’s the type of stuff we need.

“Our pitching and defense kept their run total down, and we were able to scratch together some key runs. That’s what we are going to need.”

Wantland wins NIB 12 800-meter title STAFF REPORTS STERLING – The Morris boys track and field team competed in the Northern Illinois Big 12 indoor championships Saturday.

Redskin runner Jacob Wantland won the 800-meter run and set a new school record and indoor conference record with a time of 2:01.02.

Wantland will compete this weekend in the indoor state championships at the Illinois Top Times Championships in Bloomington at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. His race is at noon.

Other Morris results from the conference championships were Al Alvarez in the 3,200 with a time of 11:03, Max Dudley in the 3,200 with a time of 11:37 and Shane McTague in the 800 with a time of 2:33.

In the girls meet, Morris junior Leona Burton placed fourth in long jump with a leap of 16-0 and also took fifth in 60 dash with a time of 8.27.

The team defense was rough for an inning and allowed a total of six unearned runs in the game. Jenni Nugent and Trumpeter each had two hits, including a triple each. In their final game, Seneca thumped Rushville Industry, 17-2.

Taylor Bushman went the distance in a six-inning game, scattering six hits and striking out three. Cade, Nugent, Bushman, Sangston and Hacker each had two hits to pace a balanced offense.

Families of Faith Christian Academy opens with suspended game: The Eagles kicked

off their season Friday night in a conference matchup with Grace Christian Academy in Kankakee.

The game featured two ejections and ended in a suspend-

ed game because of darkness.

The Eagles scored their first run in the first inning. Travis Barr walked, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out by Cameron Latour and scored on a ground ball from Thomas Larson. The Eagles took advantage of Crusader mistakes in the second to push the lead to 3-0. The Crusaders answered with three in the bottom of the second to tie the score after two innings.

The Eagles regained the lead and pushed it to 6-3 before surrendering four runs in the bottom of the fourth to trail 7-6 after four innings.

Both teams traded two-run innings in the fifth and solo runs in the sixth before darkness put the game into suspension. The Eagles knocked out five hits, doubles from Thomas Larson and Cody Blan and singles from Jordan Welsh, Travis Barr and Cameron Latour.

Latour started on the mound for the Eagles, lasting only 1 1⁄3 innings, surrending four walks while striking out three. Josh Martisek pitched two innings, walking five and striking out one, Thomas Larson pitched 2⁄3 of an inning, surrendering one walk and Cody Blan pitched two innings, allowing four walks while striking out two.

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had a sweet tooth for reading?

Today, though, Olivieri’s key word is “migrate.” This deal is the same as yesterday’s except that the spade ace has migrated into the dummy. How does that affect South’s line of play in three no-trump after West leads the heart queen?

South should rebid one spade, despite the weakness of the suit. North’s three-diamond rebid is game-invitational, guaranteeing at least a six-card suit. South, with two heart stoppers and some diamond fit, takes a shot at three no-trump.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. He can get two extra winners from either minor. Maybe diamonds will divide 3-2 or clubs will split 3-3. Yesterday, declarer had to choose immediately, so went with diamonds because a 3-2 break is much more likely than 3-3 (67.8 percent versus 35.53 percent). Now, though, South can try both suits.

After winning the first trick, declarer should cash dummy’s two top diamonds.

If the suit is splitting 3-2, South concedes a diamond trick. With the spade ace in the dummy, declarer can reach those three established winners and bring home an overtrick.

Here, though, when diamonds divide 4-1, South must hope for 3-3 clubs.

This line produces a 79.2 percent probability of success.

Mom with breast cancer does not need shielding from life Dear Abby: My wife has stage 4 breast cancer. She is only 51, and our most optimistic prognosis is three to four more years. Our children, 15 and 16, understand her disease, but don’t really have a sense of how much longer we all have together.

Recently, we went out to dinner, and the kids started talking about my retirement plans and their college plans. Later that night, my wife told me how sad it was hearing the kids talk about things she knows she will never see.

I have been debating whether I should have a talk with the kids and perhaps suggest they avoid subjects that make their mother sad. What do you think?

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Not Talking: Before talking to your children, I think you should talk to your wife.

Although your instinct is to protect her, I don’t think you can. Sadness in her situation is normal. I’m sure if you were to ask her if she’d prefer the kids censor their remarks in front of her, she would tell you she wants to hear everything she can about what they are thinking.

When people have a terminal illness, they have a right to be sad when contemplating the things they will be missing – in

your wife’s case it will be seeing her children get married, her grandchildren and more.

Let your children express themselves fully with their mother, and if she’s having a bad/sad day, listen and let her unburden herself. A joy shared is twice a joy, and a burden shared is half a burden.

Dear Abby: As a gift, my boyfriend, “Seth,” gave me a Chihuahua puppy. I like dogs, but have never expressed a desire to have one.

In fact, I have repeatedly mentioned my dislike for small dogs and that I wouldn’t have a dog due to my travel schedule for work. I’d have to pay for food, veterinary care, toys, boarding, etc., and the dog would be alone in my apart-
