Carol Susan Bice (nee Strachan), age 83, of Essex, Illinois, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015, at Heritage Health in Dwight, Illinois.

Carol was born January 26, 1932, to the late Alex and Daisy Mae (nee Morse) Strachan. She married Art Bice on June 25, 1949. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2004.

Carol worked for 28 years for the U.S. Government; 24 years as a secretary and 4 years as a military family housing manager and as personal secretary to the squadron commander (Air Force recruiting squadron).

After her retirement, she worked at the Fossil Ridge Public Library up until the time of her illness in 2008.

She had a life-long passion for education. She completed two college degrees and had over 120 hours of college credits.

She would always say “never stop learning, because it’s the only thing that can never be taken away from you.”

Surviving are her children, Mike (Luci) Bice of Essex and Cindy (Rick) Alderson of South Wilmington, IL; five grandchildren, Brandon (Lauren) Bice, Sara (Brett Grossman) Bice, Lindsay Bice, Cassie (Pat) Boudreau, and Amy (Mark) Lehnus; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor, Evan, Cara, Ryan, Holden, Josie, Maeve, Callie, and Niles; one brother, Jim (Marcia) Strachan of New Port Richey, FL;

• Ryne J. Quigley, 26, of Godley, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on March 13 on charges of driving under the influence and driving while license suspended.

He also was cited for not wearing a seat belt and operating an uninsured vehicle.

• Sergio A. Rivera-Valenzuela, 31, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on March 14 on a charge of felony driving while license revoked. He also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol.

White Oak students gather change to assist family member of teacher

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – White Oak students collected pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters for a cause during the last two weeks in a coin war that only saw winners.

The students collected coins from family members and friends and brought them to their teachers in a battle to see who could raise the most money to help 2-year-old Zach Larson of La Harpe, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Zach is the nephew of longtime District 54 teacher Denise Bach.

“For the past couple of years we’ve tried to find service projects that would help the community,” Principal Chris Maier said. “It’s important to teach students to give back to their community.”

The classrooms raised $4,279.61 to give to Zach’s parents, Nicholas and Maria Larson, to help them with transportation and food costs while he’s in the hospital in Peoria for treatment, as well as help with household bills while the parents miss work.

Larson was taken to the hospital Feb. 21 for hives. An X-ray found two masses behind his lungs. On Feb. 24 he had a biopsy, as well as a bone marrow test, which discovered the masses were tumors.

Zach was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, with one tumor encircling the spine, according to Bach.

In addition to raising money, the students gathered Friday afternoon for an all-school assembly where students from the three classes that raised the most money were able to assist in a round of haircuts.

“I’ve lost friends and family to cancer,” Alvarez said, showing off her new haircut after the assembly. “At first I wanted to donate my hair to a specific place, but then when I learned Zach was sick and needed help, I knew I wanted to do it for him.”

Alvarez was joined by Sarah Farmer, who chopped off 10 inches of her nearly waistlength hair, and Bach, who also lost several inches of tresses.

LOCAL NEWS Minooka High School makes personnel cuts Students speak out against decision to eliminate positions in art, music

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – A standing room-only crowd of students, parents, teachers and other staff gathered Thursday at Minooka Community High School’s school board meeting to voice displeasure with several agenda items that called for personnel reductions in the district.

Following an open session where several pleaded their cases, then an hourlong closed session, the school board made sweeping personnel cuts involving teachers, a librarian and support staff, along with reductions in hours of several district positions in an attempt to reduce a fiscal year $3 million deficit.

Reductions in force, or RIFs, were given to art teacher Christine Listello, music teacher Tyler White and librarian Lisa Wright – all fulltime employees.

Part-time social studies teacher Candace Baker and part-time French teacher Bill Swiderski also were dismissed, and their positions not renewed next year. Support staff not renewed for next year were full-time print room clerk Melanie Safarck, parttime dean receptionists Mary Patt Clancy and Paulette Aldis, and part-time technology aide Cindy Vong.

Probationary special education teacher Jeff Gilmour also was dismissed, and his position will not be renewed. Positions will not be renewed for two teachers retiring in drivers’ education and English, and for one retiring counselor.

Superintendent Jim Blanche said after the meeting there were nine teachers affected by the reductions in force out of the district’s nine departments.

“This is painful,” Blanche said. “Nobody wants to do

it, but our budget issues are well-documented.”

Blanche said the cause of the budget deficit is a drastic decrease in revenue over the past few years resulting from declines in property tax and state dollars.

Board President Mike Brozovich said that over the last four years, the district has lost $10 million in tax-based revenue due to the declining economy. The decision to reduce personnel, he said, was made after all other cost-saving avenues were exhausted.

Blanche said he received news Thursday the district will lose an additional 2.25 percent in state revenue next year.

D-54 projections show value declines are slowing Property tax expected to move upward

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Howard Crouse, senior vice president at PMA Financial Network, discussed this week financial projections with the District 54 School Board.

“The good news currently is that the EAV [equalized assessed value] appears to have leveled out,” Crouse said. “We should start to see the property tax move upward as the

EAV starts to increase in the coming years.”

The EAV has shown a decline since 2010, bottoming out in 2014. District 54 is funded 42.3 percent by property taxes and 23.4 percent by general state aid.

Crouse, who attended Tuesday’s board meeting, said a projected 1 percent increase in levy year 2016 and 2 percent in subsequent years will add to the district’s revenue.

Crouse also told the board

general state aid is expected to be prorated at 89 percent for the next five years, as it has been.

“To me, 89 percent is the minimum they can do. You can’t get by with less,” Crouse said. “I have districts who receive 50 percent of their revenue from state aid. They are on the verge of financial ruin.”

Projections show a decline in year-end balances in the educational, operations and maintenance, transportation, Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, working cash and tort funds.

That decline will need to be addressed, or there will be a negative year-end balance by fiscal 2018.

Superintendent Teri Shaw said District 54 has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars over recent years by decentralizing special education and combining transportation, which has extended earlier projections that showed the district would have negative fund balances by this year.

“Every year the financial projections show that in five or six years it will end in negative balances,” Shaw said.

by Greenhouse Group LLC for a medical marijuana dispensary was scheduled to take place next week at the Morris Planning Commission meeting, but the company has requested a postponement of its public hearing, Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said Friday.

The Morris Planning Commission was set Wednesday to hear Greenhouse Group’s request for a conditional permitted use permit to open a dispensing business at 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It Again” video store.

Greenhouse Group was awarded a license by the state in February for a dispensary that will be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties, and the prospective location is adjacent to the Forte Arts Center, which is a preschool, dance and music studio for children.

Forte Arts Center owner Pam Simpson, who was planning to speak Wednesday in protest of the dispensary location, said it’s not something she wants to have near the kids in her school.

Simpson was happy to hear the company had postponed its request, but was in limbo about the future.

“I’m not against medical marijuana,” Simpson said. “I have a relative who uses it for those reasons. If it helps people in our community, that’s important to me, too. But I’m not sure of all the unknowns that go with it. Why is it only a cash business? Why do they need security at the entrance?

She said she wanted to do something for little kids who are sick.

Aguilera decided to allow

students to help her cut her hair, just like the teachers.

“I didn’t want to help with the coins, I wanted to help with my hair,” she said.

Bach said she was overwhelmed with the support her school gave to her family.

“This whole thing has been very heartwarming,” she said.

“This is painful. Nobody wants to do it, but our budget issues are well-documented.”

Authored by Jon Gordon in 2007, and introduced to administration and faculty by District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran after seeing Gordon speak at a conference, the book gives 10 rules to fuel your life, work and team through positive energy.

Principal Kelly Hussey said the faculty portion of the school’s yearly survey brought weaknesses to light.

The 10 rules in “The Energy Bus” shifted the self-evaluation process into top gear.

“We asked ourselves questions like, ‘Have we fallen apart?’ ‘How can we rebuild spirit within the faculty?’ ‘Are we creating the best atmosphere?’ ” Hussey said.

Three faculty leadership groups formed out of discussions about the book: The Chief Energy Officers, in charge of spreading positive energy; the Curriculum Cavaliers, who ensure quality of lessons and classroom efficiency; and the Rule Righters, who make sure rules and people are handled fairly.

Hussey said a key piece of feedback from 50 percent of teachers who read “The Energy Bus” was that faculty needs to meet more outside of work hours.

In addition to the school’s yearly golf outing, Hussey said four new social events for faculty have either happened or are planned.

“Each teacher has a different schedule so it’s hard to find time as a group,” Gustafson said. “We planned a trip to Oak Brook to see ‘West Side Story.’

It’s nice to know each other as a family.”

Holding more meetings and socializing ensures everyone is on the same page with open lines of communication, which passes on to students, Hussey said.

Born: May 2, 1948; in Joliet, IL Died: March 19, 2015; in Joliet, IL Douglas L. Cotter, age 66, of Morris, passed away Thursday evening, March 19, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born May 2, 1948, in Joliet, Douglas was a son of the late James L. Cotter and Burnette (nee Johnson). He was raised and educated in Morris and graduated from Morris Community High School with the class of 1966. In 2000, Doug retired from AT&T as a communications technician and repairman, after 30 years of service. He also farmed for a short time with Mark Wills Farms.

Doug enjoyed the outdoors and took pleasure in fishing, hunting and camping. He will be remembered as a meticulous individual who took pride in preserving what he worked so hard for. Survivors include his loving wife, LaRae (Harrington), whom he married March 9, 1968, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris; one son, Douglas Cotter, Jr. of Gunnison, CO; one sister, Sharon (Charles) Priovolos of Lockport; one half-sister, Cathy Salerno of NV; his mother-in-law, Gloria Harrington; and six sisters-in-law, Sharee (the late Jerry) Beeler of Mazon, Cynthia Lyne and Kathie (John) Spreitzer, both of Morris, Michelle (Pete) Lake of MO, Heidi Harrington of Morris, and Stacie Cortez of Joliet.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Burnette and William Brady and James L. Cotter; one son, Timothy Cotter in 1989; one brother, James in infancy; his father-in-law, LeRoy Harrington; and one sister-inlaw, Patricia (David) Edmunds.

Discouraging news on FOIA appeals Despite reform efforts and good intentions from some, Illinois residents still are often left in the dark when it comes to records of what’s happening with the government entities they fund with their tax dollars.

The Associated Press recently examined the backlog of Freedom of Information Act appeals in Illinois Attorney General’s Office five years after Attorney General Lisa Madigan hired a public access counselor to intervene in cases between government agencies and individuals or organizations seeking access to government records.

According to the AP analysis, more than 2,800 appeals have not gotten a response, which is about one in five appeals since reform went into place in 2010. While that’s bad news, what’s even more troubling is that this has been a big step forward.

created, the only recourse for a citizen who sought records that were being denied was to hire a private attorney at his own expense while the government agency could fight that request tooth and nail with tax dollars to back up its legal bills.

Some might believe this issue is only a typical fight between journalists and government, but the reality is that more than four of five of the unresolved appeals are disputes between individuals and government agencies.

Solutions are baffling, because putting teeth in the law in the form of fines is ultimately punishing taxpayers because their government agencies are hiding information from them.

There’s also the question of manpower to sort the appeals. If more government oversight personnel are needed, that will be reflected by more salary costs.

Perhaps individual

government employees who illegally fight against releasing information obviously covered by FOIA should be suspended or terminated, or private law firms who give those entities bad legal advice should have to cover their own costs.

When asked about the issue, Gov. Bruce Rauner essentially stated the obvious.

“We’ve got to change that culture, and be more responsive,” Rauner said.

That culture has permeated Illinois, a state with a national reputation for corruption, for far too long.

The culture of secrecy seeps all the way down to school districts and village halls.

We’re open to new and better solutions to making public officials at all levels understand records of how government conducts business is the people’s business and that releasing public documents should be the norm instead of the exception.

The White House and some Democrats are livid over congressional Republican attempts to circumvent President Obama’s authority to make a nuclear arms deal with Iran. They have a right to be angry – but not to be surprised.

There’s a war going on between the executive and legislative branches in which Obama has shown contempt for Congress’ constitutional powers, and now, in response, Congress is showing contempt for the president’s constitutional powers. It’s an unfortunate situation, but it’s what Obama has wrought.

The latest development is an open letter to Iranian leaders written by GOP Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and signed by 46 other Senate Republicans.

Released earlier this month, the letter reminds Iran that Obama is negotiating with them on his own, without the formal approval or support of Congress. Obama is not pursuing a treaty, which would have to be agreed to by the Senate, or a joint executive-congressional agreement, which would also require Congress’ approval.

“We will consider any agreement regarding your nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by the Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei,” the Republican senators write. “The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.”

Just in case there’s any confusion, the Republicans remind Iran that the next U.S.

VIEWS Byron York president will be inaugurated in January 2017, about 22 months from now, while at least some of the GOP senators who signed the letter will remain in office for many years to come.

Democrats from President Obama on down have condemned the Cotton letter.

Some of the less disciplined among them have called Cotton and his colleagues “traitors.”

But remember what preceded the Republicans’ action.

A number of senators, led by Republican Sen. Bob Corker, have been working on legislation to require congressional approval for any Iran deal.

Now, the president’s supporters interpret Cotton’s letter as the latest in a long line of Republican outrages directed against Obama.

Time after time, Obama has scorned Congress. Now Congress is scorning Obama.

It’s an entirely predictable development.

Of course, it is still a bad thing. It is not good to invite a foreign leader to address Congress in a campaign against the U.S. president. It is not good to undermine the president’s authority to conduct foreign policy.

But it’s not a good thing to undermine Congress’ authority to make laws, either.

And to threaten even more undermining in the future, as Obama has done.

Morris bats silenced by Plainfield North pitching

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – It’s not impossible, but it’s also certainly not easy to win a baseball game without getting a hit.

The Morris baseball team found that out Friday when Plainfield North’s Kyle Strepek and Matthew Vanek combined to no-hit the Redskins for five innings in the Tigers’ 11-0 nonconference win.

Strepek struck out seven in his four innings of work, while Vanek had two strikeouts in his one inning. Morris (1-1) got a pair of runners on base against Strepek, one when Tyler Bordner was hit by a pitch with two outs in the first inning and the other when losing pitcher Matt Walker walked with two outs in the third.

Jordan Miracle ran for Bordner in the first and reached second on a wild pitch, but that was as close as Morris got to scoring.

Plainfield North, however, had little trouble getting runners around and, early on, they had some help. Morris committed a pair of errors in the bottom of the first inning that led to two unearned runs.

After Walker held the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the second, North, ranked sixth in the state by Prep Baseball Report’s in the preseason, touched Walker for six hits and five runs, all earned, in the bottom of the third.

“We’re not too concerned with the result in this game,” Morris coach Todd Kein said.

“We were looking for positives within the structure of the game. Plainfield North is a very balanced team. They play well offensively and defensively and they have very good pitching.

“You have to tip your cap to them. They were able to take advantage of some early mistakes we made in the field and get an early lead. That put us in a hole right away where we were trying to play catch-up.

If we come out of the first in a 0-0 game, maybe things are a little different. We have to make the routine plays and keep the mistakes like that to a minimum.”

Todd Kein Morris baseball coach Although Morris’ defense was a little bit off in the early going, there were some defensive highlights.

Tom Cheshareck made a nice running catch of a foul ball in left field, and Emmet Chouinard made a sliding stop of a ball headed up the middle and threw to first for the out. Jake McDonald handled his chances at shortstop flawlessly, and center fielder Cody Niewinski threw out a runner trying to score.

Offensively, McDonald hit the ball hard in both trips to the plate, hitting a one-hopper right at the first baseman and lining out to center. The lefthanded-hitting Cheshareck put the ball in play both times against the tough lefty Strepek, popping up to first and flying out to left.

“Jake put some good swings on the ball,” Kein said. “In our two games so far, I have liked what I have seen at the plate from him. He has worked hard to get better and he is taking the right approach at the plate.

“In a weird way, I was happy to see Matt face some adversity on the mound. When he came up last year, it was a special time. We were firing on all cylinders and all the pieces were in place. Now, we have to try to find some pieces to put in those places. I am not going to read too much into this performance. His next one will be better.”

The Redskins return to action today for their home opener against Bradley-Bourbonnais at 11 a.m.

AREA ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTS PEORIA – During the course of a basketball season, even single game in which a player shoots 60 percent from 3-point range is exceptional.

But, when it’s the Country Financial 3-Point Showdown, and the preliminary round of the state finals at that, sometimes even 60 percent isn’t quite good enough.

That’s what Morris’ Austin Patterson found out Thursday.

Patterson – who was looking for a return trip to the finals after qualifying last season – made 9 of 15 shots in the Class 3A preliminaries, which tied for the most in his group of eight with Kaneland’s Connor Fedderly.

Unfortunately, there were three other groups of eight.

Max Ramos of St. Joseph’s and Will Strader of Charleston each made 11 of 15, while Will Daniels of Geneseo, Neal Lambert of Pontiac and Jack Westerkamp of Montini each made 10.

Start of spring brings on wild turkey season Friday marked the first day of spring. This date means a lot of different things to different people. Some look forward to the boys of summer hitting the ball diamond.

Others thumb eagerly through the pages of garden catalogs, while some prepare their tractors for planting yet another year of crops. Yes, spring is many things. For some of us, the ushering in of a new season screams “gobble, gobble!”

Turkey season is fast-approaching. In fact, the youth season for the Northern Region is just a couple of short weeks away on the weekend of April 4 and 5.

The regular opener for the Northern Region runs from April 13 to 17.

Second season kicks in on April 18, third season starts April 24, fourth season begins April 30, and the fifth and final season begins May 7th.

Although the time for chasing gobblers spans just more than a month, the wide

range of weather conditions that can play out within that month is mind-boggling.

There are years I bagged my first bird wearing my heavy snow gear the first season and then sweated profusely chasing turkeys the last season. On top of those challenges, the birds themselves go through a massive change sin behavior as well.

It can be daunting, yet there is hardly a season that is more rewarding than turkey season.

If you plan on taking a youngster, there are several tips I can give you based on my experiences.

First, don’t expect to sit all that long. If you’re good for a couple of hours, then assume your youthful companion may be good for half that, if you’re lucky.

Second, make sure that you have done your legwork ahead of time. If you had the chance to scout and narrow down where birds are going, that is great. This allows you

I used to be against hunting turkeys from a pop-up blind when I was younger.

That was dumb.

Portable blinds work great for hunting turkeys and I’ve enjoyed many hunts inside of them. Young kids can get away with more movement, they can sit in a comfortable chair, they can even bring something to keep them occupied.

All of these benefits far outway the downsides. Yes, I enjoy the purest approach of hunting against a tree with a full 360 view, but when it comes to kids, get a blind.

For adults, hunting the rest of the seasons, there is one strategy that I have used time-and-time again when things were tough – hunt the

woods.

Turkey hunters most often dream about setting up on the edge of a beautiful field and watching a group of mature toms strut their way into a decoy setup.

Of course, this all happens first thing after they fly down from the roost. Yes, this scenario does come true every year. I have enjoyed this picturesque hunt many times. But, when things don’t work out, get into the thick timber.

Turkeys can see quite a distance. As hunters, we cannot even imagine how many times those birds spy us, our decoys, or check the field we are in, without us ever seeing them or knowing they are there.

If a wary old gobbler can see a distance, he is going to use it to his advantage.

Take the advantage away if you can.

When a tom hears a hen, but can’t see her, he is much more likely to go looking.

Yes, he may try to gobble and bring her to him, but he will do some milling about as well.

This can be a nerve-wracking way to hunt turkeys. Most of the time, those big gobblers won’t make a sound.

They just keep moving in and around the brush, trying to find the hen you are imitating.

You have to have confidence that they hear you.

Just when the urge to give up kicks in, wait another twenty minutes.

No matter what the weather, which season you are hunting, or the conditions, the woods have worked for me. That doesn’t mean I always bag a bird, but it is a tactic that has yielded success for me so many times.

Good luck in the turkey woods this year. Be safe, bring a kid, and have fun.

Eaton gets extension; Sale not out for long

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox locked up another important piece of their young core group Friday, signing 26-year-old center fielder and leadoff man Adam Eaton to a five-year, $23.5 million extension.

Just as they did with Chris Sale (five years, $32.5 million) during spring training two years ago and with Jose Quintana (five years, $21 million) last spring, the Sox gave more long-term, multi-million money before they needed to now, giving the players security but at a lower figure than it would cost them down the road in deals that took away players’ arbitration years.

Eaton’s deal takes him through 2019 with team options for the following two seasons.

He will receive $850,000 in 2015, $2.75 million in 2016, $4 million in 2017, $6 million in 2018 and $8.4 million in 2019. The Sox hold options for 2020 at $9.5 million and for 2021 at $10.5 million.

If either option is declined, Eaton will receive a $1.5-million buyout.

“Adam serves as a catalyst, brings a spark of energy to the ballpark each and every day and helps ignite our offense,” general manager Rick Hahn said. “He provided everything we look for in a leadoff hitter, a center fielder and a competitor. We have a kid here who we think is going to be an essential part of our success over the next couple of years and is a rare piece

in this game, a top of the order player who plays in the middle of the diamond, plays a premium position and brings you plus offense and the ability to get on base and run.”

“I’m thrilled,” Eaton said. “I’m happy with it, very happy. It’s going to be a relief here on my part to go out and play.

“All things point to being excited for the Chicago White Sox. You look at the guys we have in place for a long time, there’s quite a few of us and we’re all on board and I’m very happy with hopefully being here the next five to seven years.”

Eaton tied for the American League lead in triples, ranked third in average with runners in scoring position (.355) and 12th in onbase percentage (.362) last season.

Sale, however, threw 60 pitches off the mound, and the lefthander remains on track to avoid missing a significant amount of time because of a foot and ankle injury.

“Sale had a really good day today,” Hahn said.

Sale suffered an avulsion fracture and ankle sprain on his right (landing) foot Feb. 27 in an accident at his home.

The Sox projected that he would miss three weeks, and his bullpen session Friday – his first off a mound since he got hurt – came three weeks after. Opening Day is April 6, and the Sox remain hopeful Sale can pitch by the second or third week of the season. He has started the last two openers for the Sox.

The left-hander was scheduled to start Saturday against the Seattle Mariners. Rookie Eric Jokisch is to start in his place, manager Joe Maddon said.

“More than likely, he will not miss the start after that,” Maddon said. “But we wanted to be very cautious with him right now. At this point it does not impact Opening Day.” The team does not consider it serious enough to require even a precautionary MRI, and Maddon said he’s not concerned about the pitcher the Cubs are building their competitive hopes around.

“Not right now, no,” Maddon said. “I’m not (concerned) right now.”

Lester, who pitched five nearly flawless innings in his first two starts this spring before getting knocked around Monday by the Padres, would have two more starts before his scheduled Opening Night start April 5, barring further issue with the arm.

Lester, who still is maintaining a between-starts throwing regimen, was not available to media Friday.

The so-called dead-arm period is not uncommon for pitchers during spring training.

And Lester told Maddon he had experienced it before, the manager said.

“A lot of times when you talk to a pitcher, especially, and you ask how they’re feeling, when a guy smiles easily and talks easily and is upbeat about it, normally it’s a pretty good indication,” Maddon said. “And he was all of that. I really feel strongly he’s going to be OK.”

Interestingly, the majority erred slightly in the declarer-play problem. They correctly went for either a 3-2 club split or the diamond finesse, but omitted to cash the club ace first, which gains when either opponent has a singleton king. That is unlikely, but it cannot cost to try.

A few people played for a squeeze, most stating that they thought they would be able to read the end-position.

The main snag is that when there is no squeeze, they are down to the diamond finesse.

Now let’s look at today’s deal. How should East plan the defense against four spades after West leads the heart king?

With ace-doubleton, East must overtake his partner’s king with the ace. (Note that if East does not win the first trick, the contract becomes unbeatable.) Then, East’s best play is to cash the diamond ace before returning his second heart. Here, the defenders will take one diamond and three hearts to defeat the contract.

If East immediately leads back his second heart, what should he do at trick three when West cashes his heart queen?

East could discard the diamond jack, screaming for a diamond shift (which is a far better play than pitching a discouraging club three). But much more fun is to trump his partner’s trick and to cash the diamond ace.

‘Good’ bacteria now delivered to gut in surprising new form Dear Doctor K: I overheard a colleague talking about “poop pills” used to treat diarrhea.

That can’t be right. Can it?

Dear Reader: Yes, “poop” means what you think it means. Same thing as “doodoo.” It’s gross, but it’s true.

So-called “poop pills” are being used to treat diarrhea caused by bacteria called Clostridium difficile, or “C. diff.”

Let me explain.

Our intestines are filled with many different kinds of bacteria. Most live happily there; they don’t invade or attack the intestine that is their home. C. diff bacteria live in our guts, but in low numbers – low because other bacteria in the intestine out-compete them for nutrients.

So far, so good. The prob-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff lem starts with antibiotic treatment. Every antibiotic is good at killing some types of bacteria, while having no effect on other types. A doctor chooses a particular antibiotic based on the type of bacterial infection that is being treated.

Many people are hospitalized for infections, such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections. Most of the antibiotics used to kill these infections also kill bacteria in the gut that compete with C. diff. However, they often don’t kill C. diff. This leaves a void that allows C. diff to multiply.

Once it takes hold in the gut, C. diff creates toxins that cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain and inflammation that can be life-threatening.

Treatment of C. diff begins by stopping the antibiotic that triggered it in the first place. If that doesn’t work, the doctor prescribes one of a handful of antibiotics that specifically kill C. diff. But C. diff is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics.

Ever since the discovery of penicillin, the obvious treatment for bacterial infections has been antibiotics. But as the problem of antibiotic resistance has grown, doctors have been experimenting with another approach. They are filling the gut with the bacteria that are C. diff’s normal

competitors. They’re treating bad bacteria with large numbers of good bacteria.

The good bacteria are abundant in feces. Transplants of fecal material (poop) from a healthy donor are placed into the intestine of the person who is ill. As originally used, fecal transplants have been, frankly, rather unpleasant. Fresh stool from a healthy donor has been thinned, and then either pumped into a tube threaded through a patient’s nose and into their intestine, or given in the form of an enema (a liquid injected into the rectum).

Now there’s an easier way to deliver the dose: poop pills.

Researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital have used capsules

containing frozen fecal extracts from healthy people to successfully treat diarrhea caused by C. diff.

Disgusting as it sounds, the donor feces are processed so only bacteria remains in the pill. The pill that is swallowed is clean and odorless. It is, essentially, a probiotic pill. And its protective gel cover does not dissolve until it is deep in the digestive tract.

Hopefully, the clean and odorless poop pill will prove as effective as the original ways of delivering good bacteria into the gut. They weren’t pretty, but they worked.
