Robert Wayne Bruce, age 55, of Marseilles, passed away Wednesday March 18, 2015, at Rivershores HealthCare and Rehabilitation Centre.

Born: Sept. 9, 1919; in Morris, IL Died: March 17, 2015; in Morris, IL Bruce William Burkhart, age 95, of Park Pointe Healthcare, Morris, formerly of Mazon, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at the Morris Hospital with his family at his bedside.

Bruce was born September 9, 1919 in Morris, to John Leonard and Florence Margaret (Tillman) Burkhart. He had one older brother, Maurice, who has preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death are his granddaughters Julie and Elizabeth. He grew up on the family farm in rural Goodfarm Township where he attended rural grade schools and Mazon Township High School. He continued his education in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois until joining the Army Air Corps in 1943, which led him to constructing air bases on the Pacific Islands of Saipan and Okinawa during World War II. While preparing for those assignments, being stationed at Truax Field, Madison, Wisconsin, he met his future wife, Clara Junetta Pederson. They were married in Madison before he went overseas.

Following the war, he worked for the United States Geological Survey Department which had him and Clara traveling extensively throughout the United States. However, in 1950, the opportunity to return to an agricultural career presented itself, and in partnership with his brother Maurice, he and Clara began the rest of their active lives farming in the Mazon, Illinois area. Following Maurice’s retirement, he partnered with Maurice’s son-inlaw, Robert Wilkinson, and then with his own son, David Burkhart. He also furthered the cause of agriculture through active membership in the Illinois Farm Bureau.

Bruce was a lifelong member of the Park Street Congregational Church in Mazon. His father had sent him there as a youth so that he might have sociality with others his age as there were not those opportunities in Goodfarm Township where he lived. His passion for aviation had him earning his pilot’s

POLICE REPORTS license in the first such classes at the University of Illinois, joining the Air Corps, continuing in the US Air Force Reserve, leading the local Civil Air Patrol Squadron, joining the International Flying Farmers organization, and introducing many to the joys of flying through rides in his airplane. He was honored to have risen to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserve at his retirement.

Bruce is survived by Clara, his wife of 71 years; his son, Philip (Nancy) and their children, Benjamin (Jeanette), Jeremiah (Rachel), Jessamyn (Justin), Merideth, Wynonah (Tyler), Alexander (Krista), and Alicia (Bracken); his son, David (Melinda) and their children, Patrick, Rebecca, and Andrew and fifteen great-grandchildren. Memorials in Bruce’s name may be made to the Park Street United Church of Christ.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Park Street United Church of Christ, Mazon, IL, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Bruce’s Life at 3:00 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the Morris Color Guard outside the church immediately following the services. A private interment will be at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL at a later date.

Born: June 20, 1929; in Murrayville, IL Died: March 18, 2015; in Dwight, IL Vera M. Ellis, age 85, of Gardner, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Heritage Health in Dwight.

Born June 20, 1929, in Murrayville, Illinois, Vera was a daughter of the late George and Margaret (Simmons) Hayes. She was raised and educated in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington High School. Vera worked many years as a hostess at several of the area local establishments, most recently being the Riviera. She was a member of Church of Hope in Gardner and took pleasure in knitting and crocheting. Vera was

an avid reader who also loved cooking and baking. Vera was a social butterfly, who greatly enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids. She will always be remembered for her radiant smile and her gift of making everyone feel special.

Hail to the ag baby Farm bureau young leaders honor baby born on National Ag Day

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Thomas Harvey and Christina Rowland of Coal City headed to the Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers to have their baby, they had no idea he would become the 2015 Ag Baby.

The Grundy County Farm Bureau Young Leader Committee decided in 2009 to celebrate the first baby born on National Agriculture Day by presenting the new parents with a gift basket filled with baby items that could be traced back to a family farm.

“Every year, the Young Leaders highlight how agriculture touches everyone’s life,” said Tasha Bunting, manager of the Grundy County Farm Bureau. “They put together a basket that shows how agriculture touches even an infant’s life from day one.”

Brantley Rowland arrived a couple of days later than expected and was born on National Agriculture Day, which was March 18 this year, at 2:41 p.m.

“When we found out this morning that he was the Ag baby, I thought it was very cool,” his father Thomas Harvey said.

National Ag Week is celebrated this year from March 15 to 21 across the United States as a time to reflect on how agricultural roots and traditions have affected Americans lives.

Brantley doesn’t know it yet, but he comes from a line of farmers. His great-grandfather Jim Schott has farmed his whole life. His grandmother Beth Schott was raised on an Illinois farm.

LOCAL NEWS Morris district proposes preschool program Officials looking to start classes in 2015-16, if enough interest is there

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Elementary School District 54 is partnering with Nettle Creek and Saratoga schools on a possible fee-based preschool under the name Morris Community Schools Preschool.

Melissa Lohse, special populations director for District 54, told the school board on Tuesday the preschool will be offered if the schools find enough parents interested in taking part.

“Based on parent interest, we are considering an addition to the existing preschool,” Lohse said. “So far we’ve had six parents respond that they are interested.”

The district is looking to start the program for the 201516 school year, if the interest is there.

Currently, at-risk students in Grundy County attend public preschool to prepare for school. Parents interested in preschool whose children are not at-risk have to attend private schools.

Coal City Community Unit School District 1 also is considering a tuition-based program.

The proposed fee-based

classes will cost parents about $200 a month, or $2,000 annually, and will provide children ages 3, 4 and 5 with two and a half hours of instruction, either in the morning or afternoon.

Board member Caroline Cummings questioned the maximum number of students that would be allowed to attend. Lohse told the board that for non-special education students, there would be one

teacher and one paraprofessional for 20 students. If a class were special education-based, they would be required to have one teacher and one paraprofessional for 10 students.

Preschool would be in session Monday through Friday in accordance with the district calendar, but no transportation would be provided to stu-

dents who attend.

According to a news release from school officials, students residing within the districts of Nettle Creek, Morris Elementary and Saratoga would be eligible. Children who are 3 years of age on or before Sept. 1 will be eligible for the preschool if the program starts, and children who are 5 years of age on or before Sept. 30 will not be

eligible.

Lohse said there are many benefits to offering the program, which would be housed at White Oak Elementary School, including working on school readiness with certified preschool teachers.

Anyone interested in having their child be part of the Morris Community Schools Preschool for the 2015-16

school year can complete an online form by May 1.

Parents also can get an application in the Nettle Creek main office, Saratoga main office, or the White Oak Elementary main office.

6 Morris amends, tightens

parking rules wording

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A meeting Monday night of the Street and Alley Committee brought an amendment to Morris parking regulations.

Morris municipal code was amended to state that no vehicle is permitted to park with the left side of the vehicle next to the curb, except on a one-way street. A vehicle must park with the flow of traffic. “The driver’s side of the car is not to be facing the curb,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said. “It’s illegal to have a vehicle cross oncoming traffic and when you’re facing south in the northbound lane, and so forth. It’s an unsafe maneuver.”

Continuing with the flow of traffic theme, the city added that on all streets marked with angled parking, vehicles must park with the front of the vehicle at the curb, to

address the occasional driver who backs into an angled spot.

“In order to back into an angled parking space, someone is already making an illegal maneuver by crossing a yellow line,” Ordinance Enforcer Jeff Reeder said. “It’s not safe and you have to be parked with the flow of traffic.”

Reeder said the issue was raised in court when the Morris city attorney pointed out vague wording in the ordinance regarding angled parking spots. Reeder said it was time to reword and tighten the ordinance.

In addition, the number of handicapped parking spaces available downtown is now compliant with the city’s ordinance. Kopczick and Police Chief Brent Dite described it as a “housekeeping procedure” following repavement

District 54 discusses nonresident enrollment

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Elementary School District 54 board discussed Tuesday night non-resident student requests to attend school.

The board voted at its regular meeting to approve first readings of policies, including one that addresses school admissions and student transfers to and from nondistrict schools.

“We have had an email inquiry and someone who has contacted us in regards to keeping their students in District 54 schools after they move out of our district,” Superintendent Teri Shaw said.

A policy is in place that would allow the district to accept students out-of-district at a cost of about $9,000, which would be paid by the parents.

“We’ve had inquiries over

the years, but it’s a huge amount of money for someone to come to school,” Shaw said.

She said while the district has had several inquiries in the eight years she’s been at the district, no one has opted to pay the fee and send their children to school at either White Oak Elementary School or Shabbona Middle School.

Board Member Bonnie Cap said she was concerned there wasn’t a policy in place to collect payment if, halfway through the year, parents stop paying.

Shaw said the cost can be broken down into nine payments that go throughout the school year, and if a parent chooses not to pay, the child would not be allowed to return to school.

“If they don’t pay, they don’t come,” Shaw said. “We have that conversation with them, if they don’t pay, they

aren’t enrolled.”

She said the district is under no legal obligation to educate students who don’t live within its boundaries.

The conversation is being raised because of a family who has moved to a farm. The farmland is in the district, but the house is in Coal City Community Unit School District 1.

Shaw said the district could create an agreement with Coal City schools that would allow for the deannexation of the home by Coal City and the annexation of the home by District 54, but that would take at least six months.

Board Member Carol Narvick asked for clarification of students who move mid-year and if they are allowed to stay in district schools. Shaw said they can remain for the

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Last season, the Morris baseball team won its first regional title, since 2003.

The Redskins and coach Todd Kein hope it doesn’t take that long to get another one.

“There’s no reason for us not to aim high,” Kein said.

“We definitely want to repeat that regional championship.

“That said, we have a lot of work to do between now and then, but if we can keep getting better each day, we will be fine. We are going to have to realize what our limitations are and compensate for that in other areas.”

One of the areas that looks to be the Redskins’ strengths this season in starting pitching. Morris returns ace lefty Matt Walker, who went 4-0 with 0.23 ERA last year, including a two-hit shutout over LaSalle-Peru in the regional title game. In 30 innings, Walker recorded 27 strikeouts against just five walks and allowed only one earned run. When Walker isn’t pitching, Kein expects to see him in center field.

“It’s no secret that Matt is our No. 1 pitcher,” Kein said.

In the outfield, Cheshareck will be in left when he isn’t pitching, with Walker playing center when he is not on the mound.

When he is, Niewinski will be in center. Dabney should see plenty of time in right field. Tyler Bordner will spend a majority of the time behind the plate, with Hansen able to give him a breather now and then.

“Chase Hansen didn’t play last year, but he played his freshman and sophomore years,” Kein said. “He’s still adjusting at the plate after a year off, but he has some pop in his bat. He’s solid defensively wherever he plays.”

Matt Walker will be one of the Redskins’ key players this season, both on the mound and in the outfield.

Kein pointed out that the Morris roster consists of just 14 players, creating the need for everyone to be able to play more than one position.

Backing up Walker in the starting rotation so far will be Cody Niewinski, who went 7-1 with a 2.10 ERA last year.

That’s the story for the Morris softball team this season as they try to replicate the success of last season, which saw the Redskins finish 21-10 with the program’s first regional title since 2006 and a berth in the sectional championship game.

Heading up the familiar names is sophomore pitcher Abby Burns, who will assume her position in the circle after going 18-8 with a 1.62 ERA and 173 strikeouts in 173 innings last season. Her batterymate, catcher Emily Moore, also returns behind the plate.

Last season’s middle infield, Leah Lines and Taya Torkelson also return, but it looks like each will be playing a different position. Lines will move over from shortstop to play second and Torkelson is

with us when we won the regional last year. Some were up all year and some came up just for the playoffs. Either way, they got a taste of that success.

“It was fun to play on the first legal IHSA day,” Lowery said. “Usually the weather won’t allow it. And, it was fun last spring to be playing when not many other teams were.

These girls want to get back to that, and they have the confidence and drive to do it.

“We are pretty optimistic about this season. I was a little hesitant to see what would happen against Wilmington against live pitching, since we had only faced it twice so far in practice. But, the girls made good contact and got a lot of hits. Wilmington only made a couple of errors, so most of our runs came on us getting hits, which was good to see. We know that, as the season goes on, our pitchers aren’t going to give up more than two or three runs a game, so our offense has to be able to come up with more than that. Based on what I saw Tuesday, I think we will have a good chance. We will do what we have to do in order to get runs across.”

A patron saint for openness It’s Sunshine Week across the land, a time when advocates of openness in government point out how important such transparency is to the proper functioning of democracy on all levels.

Illinois, which is infamous for government corruption, needs all the transparent government it can get.

Some might say honest government doesn’t have a prayer in Illinois. Hmm. Perhaps the effort could use a patron saint.

And we have just the man for the job: St. Patrick, whose memory is celebrated this week. Why? Well, legend has it that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. And history certainly shows that Illinois has had more than its share of “snakes” in government positions, from corrupt governors and corrupt congressmen down to corrupt city officials.

Over the years, Illinois has had enough corruption to fill a book. That’s what authors Thomas J. Gradel and Dick Simpson just did.

Last month, they came out with “Corrupt Illinois,” subtitled “Patronage, Cronyism and Criminality,” published by the University of Illinois

Press. Spanning 270 pages, the book chronicles 150 years of government corruption across the Prairie State.

Most of us are familiar with four relatively recent governors who went to jail for corruption: Rod Blagojevich, currently in federal prison; George Ryan, who was released not too long ago; Dan Walker; and Otto Kerner. And three previous governors were also indicted but escaped conviction. Illinois has a former congressman, Jesse Jackson Jr., in prison, following in the footsteps of corrupt ex-U.S. Rep. Dan Rostenkowski.

State legislators have gotten into hot water. Former state Rep. Derrick Smith, D-Chicago, is a recent example. Smith, who was recorded accepting a bribe, was kicked out of the House, re-elected by voters, then convicted in a federal trial and booted from the House again. What’s up with that?

From Chicago, which over its history has had more aldermen convicted than you can shake a stick at, to downstate, with former Secretary of State Paul Powell and his legendary shoeboxes filled with cash bribes, “Corrupt Illinois” cov-

ers the state’s sordid history of corruption.

Chapters also deal with judicial corruption, Cook County corruption, suburban corruption, police corruption and judicial corruption.

The thing about corruption is that it thrives in darkness.

For crooked government officials, the more secrecy, the better.

Open records laws, specifically the Illinois Freedom of Information Act and the Illinois Open Meetings Act, are designed to help let the sun shine in on public records and government meetings.

When government officials know for certain that their actions and records will be subject to public scrutiny, they should be less likely to risk unethical and illegal actions. That’s the theory, anyway. “Corrupt Illinois” offers various ideas for reform, all of which deserve consideration.

It also details previous reform efforts. Some succeeded, while others failed.

Reformers and the public who are sick of government corruption should take a lesson from St. Patrick: Keep up the pressure, and drive out the snakes.

After decades of listening to his critics, Bob Dylan has learned to shrug, look to the heavens and keep on going.

“Critics have always been on my tail since day one,” he said at the gala saluting him as the 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year. “Some of the music critics say I can’t sing. I croak.

Sound like a frog. ... Why me, Lord? I don’t even know what that means. ... Why me, Lord?

My work confounds them, obviously, but I really don’t know how I do it.”

Now, in two revelatory blasts – his MusiCares speech and a lengthy interview with AARP The Magazine – Dylan has gone out of his way to stress that there is no great mystery. “Dylan has made it absolutely clear that he is a serious student of country, folk, blues, rock, gospel and every other kind of American music. That’s just a fact,” said movie director Scott Derrickson, a lifelong Dylan fanatic who wrote the foreword for the book, “Restless Pilgrim: The Spiritual Journey of Bob Dylan.”

“It’s clear that he is fluent in the language and symbolism of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. ... It’s hard to dip your toe into his music without sensing the deep respect he has for the role that faith has played in the music of our culture. There has always been a sense of transcendence in his songs.”

The AARP interview focused on Dylan’s new “Shadows in the Night,” a set of 10 classic songs often connected with Frank Sinatra. Still, the discussion kept returning to matters of faith and music.

• Asked if these songs will strike young listeners as “corny,” Dylan launched into a discourse on virtue. “People’s lives today are filled on so many levels with vice and

“Ambition, greed and selfishness all have to do with vice.

Sooner or later, you have to see through it or you don’t survive. We don’t see the people that vice destroys. We just see the glamour of it on a daily basis, everywhere we look, from billboard signs to movies, to newspapers, to magazines.

We see the destruction of human life and the mockery of it, everywhere we look.”

• Discussing key early influences, Dylan called the Rev. Billy Graham a “hellfire rock ‘n’ roller,” adding, “I went to two or three of his rallies in the '50s or '60s. This guy was like rock ‘n’ roll personified – volatile, explosive. He had the hair, the tone, the elocution.

When he spoke, he brought the storm down. Clouds parted.

Souls got saved, sometimes 30 or 40,000 of them. If you ever went to a Billy Graham rally back then, you were changed forever. ... I saw Billy Graham in the flesh and heard him loud and clear.”

• On economic justice, Dylan said the rich should strive to help others, “because there are a lot of things that are wrong in America and especially in the inner cities that they could solve. Those are dangerous grounds and they don’t have to be. There are good people there, but they’ve been oppressed by lack of work.”

A German proverb goes: When two dogs fight for a bone, and a third runs off with it, there’s a lawyer among the dogs.

Yesterday, we looked at third hand high on defense. When trying to win the trick, third hand puts up the bottom of his equally high cards.

For example, from J-10-4, he plays the 10. But what does third hand do when he cannot win the trick because someone – partner or second hand – has already played a higher card than his best?

Look at the East hand in today’s deal. West leads the diamond ace against four spades. Which card should East play?

Over South’s one-spade opening, West wanted to act, but had nothing that he could do. To make a takeout double with only a doubleton heart would have been asking for trouble.

And a two-level overcall requires at least a five-card suit.

North was right to jump to four spades. Yes, declarer might have been about to lose the first four tricks, but it might have been laydown.

When West leads the diamond ace, East is supposed to signal whether he does or does not hold the queen. And the way to do that here is to follow suit with his queen, the top of touching honors, as he cannot win the trick.

The queen shows the queen and the jack (or a singleton queen, which is impossible here). This should give West the key to the best defense. He should lead a low diamond at trick two. East will win with his jack and shift to the club queen, giving the defenders the first four tricks. **
